Fannie Celebrates 100 Years With Family And Friends
Article & photos by Barb Fisher What a great experience to share in the celebration with well wishers on the occasion of Fannie Woods' centennial birthday. It was heartwarming to mingle with the crowd in the party room at the Lady Dunn Hospital whereby family and friends needed no prompting in sharing some memorable moments in recollecting many good times. Fannie and Stan moved to Wawa with their young family, Kathy, Doug, Morley and Peter from Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island in 1951, with Barry born soon after. Stan was an Algoma Mines worker and their family was one of the foundling families establishing Wawa as a vibrant little northern mining community. They put down their roots in a comfortable house on Main Street and opened their home to share many an adventure for more than 60 years. Fanny, although raising her brood with fierce protection, was anxious to assert her independence and follow her own interests, and there were many. She joined the United Church, at that time located where Calvary Church is now and shared freely of her gifts. Sunday School teacher, serving on several boards and as treasurer in charge of finances when the new United Church was built where it stands today. Fannie and her
friends from the Church started a knitting group whereby the ladies would get together to knit prayer shawls which were given to shut-ins and people confined to hospital. When started the ladies rotated every two weeks gathering at a different home each time, but Fannie requested her house to be the permanent place for the meetings so that she did not have to travel outside her home, she could bake to her hearts content, and look forward to hosting a warm home for her friends to meet and of course to partake of a little town gossip! There was lots going on in Wawa even in its infancy. Every holiday was celebrated with gusto; July 1 Canada Day, August civic holiday, Labour Day and Christmas featured concerts, parades, ball games, races, food booths and other goodies. There were picnics in the summertime, winter carnival parades and always something going on at the Legion. Saturday night dances was where everyone met and joining with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary provided the perfect outlet for Fannie's flare for baking, helping people, and nurturing lifetime friendships. Not to be sitting idle for a moment, she juggled rearing her family with her job at the old Haman's Red & White grocery store which used to stand next to the Lakeview Hotel.
During the 24 years before retiring, Fannie made many friends with whom she has cherished and kept in touch with over the years. Fannie has always displayed a strong personality, opinionated and delightfully protective of her family and friends. No one speaks unkindly of her children, 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren, and with her maiden name enabling her, she readily admits, "I'm never wrong. I'm always Wright!" There are only two siblings left in her original family of seven - the youngest Joan Stewart and Fannie the oldest. In her insistence that she will be forever young, there is a photo hanging in her room; the only photo ever whereby Doug her son at 75 years old overlaps his mum at 49! Fannie loves sports - that is everything Blue Jays and Maple Leafs, and has travelled many times to Toronto by bus, automobile or plane, any way to get to cheer on her favourite players. Her great-grandson Will shared with me Fannie's prediction that she will live to see the Maple Leafs again win the Stanley Cup. Well folks, I predict that Fannie will be with us for some years to come! Fannie has globetrotted much of the world. She will travel by any means, trains, planes, automobiles, bus and boats; whatever will get her
to her destination. Jaynie, Fannie's oldest granddaughter, who incidently had to take a backseat in her birthday celebrations; sharing a birthday with her 100 year old gramma, well Jaynie didn't really mind. Jaynie has shared many a vacation with gramma - flying to Europe, England, Scotland, Ireland, road trip to Calgary, train trip to Vancouver and to Alaska by boat. But the most memorable journey was sharing a camper road trip with her family and gramma to Nova Scotia - a trip that would task the fortitude of any seasoned traveller - but one that Fannie and family survived unscathed with memories to last a lifetime. Clair, a lifetime friend of Fannie also added her travel experiences with her most endeared friend: England, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, North Africa and beyond great adventures with a treasured friend. Son Doug acted as master of ceremonies at the birthday party and after lunch and cake, he passed on congratulations from Queen Elizabeth in a birthday greeting certificate acknowledging 100 years of excellence. Mayor Ron Rody, a family friend and advocate for the seniors of our town, also presented a congratulations certificate to Fannie in appreciation of how our seniors have positively shaped our community. Ron also took this opportunity to

remind us of the Municipality's plan to make Wawa a safe and enjoyable environment for our aging population. Several Legion Ladies Auxiliary members were present to extend their best wishes and impressed everyone once again in their baking prowess - a wonderful birthday cake to top off the festivities. The Ladies presented Fannie with several gifts including a Legion Ladies blanket embroidered with Fannie's name. But the most cherished keepsake presented by Pat Harron was a coveted Certificate of Lifetime Membership with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, paid in full by Pat for the last several years. On collecting my thoughts to pass on to my readers, I was in awe of all the love and respect that oozed from everyone in attendance of Fannie's birthday celebration, and wondered how I could capture this tenderness in words. I will simply say that Fannie's fans come away the winners in being part of her amazing life. I could feel the love!
