Women's Gala - Wiggle & Jiggle Article & photo by Barb Fisher The Wawa gals are at it again; sharing a laugh, a little wine, a lot of dessert, and tales of determination and strength that has brought out the wonder women in us all. This is the 5th annual Women's Gala organized by the Wawa Family Health Team. Again all proceeds from the evening's admission and door prize ticket revenue will be donated to the Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation who with several fundraisers throughout the year, do a remarkable job in enabling high ticket hospital equipment to be purchased. The evening's topic "Wiggle and Jiggle" was designed to get women moving and think of the unlimited possibilities we have in living our lives to the fullest. Dr. Anjali Oberai, adding her brand of humour, dismissed the barriers and fears that women harbour and assured us that we can find the time for exercise, we don't have to be good at sports, and "hot abs" is just fake news designed to sell products. The next speaker Lorraine Belanger showed us all up in her bravery. She stood up with confidence and shared her very personal journey of self-discovery. In some way her story parallels everyone in our own personal struggles, but she very assuredly projected a sense of determination in that everyone can change their direction and find contentment in living a full life. At this point a welcomed
break gave us all a chance to ooh and aah over the spread of delectable goodies beckoning everyone, even the most "abs conscious" holdouts. Door prizes were drawn throughout the evening and many baskets of unspeakable goodies were handed out to the lucky ticket holders. Julie Weinstein took the podium next and dismissed the myth that as we age, mentally we do not have to "lose it". All aspects of healthy living, including keeping your mind sound, can be improved by exercise, and provides opportunities to connect with friends, colleagues and family. Renee Mellish, our Diabetes Educator continued the topic of the evening with a humorous review on the various community exercise and sports programs offered in our community entertaining everyone using video clips in exploring where we can all fit in. The many exercise classes, team sports, and social events available to us of all ages and ability are listed with the Community Centre information centre. The final speaker Janelle McAuley introduced herself as she has just recently joined the health team staff as Registered Dietitian. She confirmed the message of the Gala in the value of exercise in all round health, and welcomes any questions and concerns that her expertise in dietary issues can resolve. Wawa Family Health Team's Executive Director Silvana Dereski wrapped up the evening with much thanks
to everyone involved in presenting the premiere evening: fearless speakers, dessert preparers Brenda Melbourne, Katie Wright, Laurie Cavan, Norma Kauk, and Silvana Dereski, Mary Spitzer of Fenlon's Pharmacy for selling tickets and promoting the event, Tim Horton's for coffee and tea, Heidi McLaren for the novel table centrepieces, Melissa Terris for ticket, program and menu design, tracking of expense and ticket sales and fine details in the organization, and together with the WFHT staff tackled the horrendous job of set up and tear down of the banquet hall, Katherine Boyd and Jolene Binda who kept the
speeches flowing on the computing system, and Brandon Loftstrom, unrivaled in his video and sound expertise and who faced the angst of being the only male in the room. The job of final cleanup fell in the hands of the very
