Overwhelming Community Response Filling The Christmas Hampers Article & photos by Barb Fisher Well we have reached another new year and reflecting on 2015, it was a very good year - especially for the community response in helping fill the Christmas Hampers for folk needing a little leg-up in celebrating Christmas day.

Partnering with Wawa Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion and the Municipality of Wawa, the Hamper Executive Committee Chair Dick Watson, Co-chair/ Treasurer Nancy Donald and Secretary Debbie MacDonnell headed an enthusiastic band of helpers in assembling all the goods collected into 125 hampers of holiday cheer. Elfextraordinaire Nancy Donald offered a little history of the event from a Lions Club historical booklet. Apparently the Wawa Lions Club began the Christmas Hamper drive

in our community in 1941, at the time providing a modest two hampers with the campaign kick-off.

Much planning has been in the works for months now in gathering goods and cash donations. Joining the quest the Wawa Volunteer Firefighters sirened and honked their way down each town street giving loud notice to the cause. They collected over $500.00 cash and a great variety of food goods.

Youngsters from the highschool shop class got involved doing the heavy lifting of bulky items, and students from Ecole St. Joseph, Sir James Dunn and St. Joseph French Immersion schools targetted a specific goal - that of collecting pancakes, waffles, syrup and anything else that goes with a great festive breakfast. The Northern Credit Union offered their

collection of clothing, knitted and crocheted items donated by the amazingly craftgifted among us, and Brenda Grundt provided a Holiday Sleigh set up in the Credit Union hall as an incentive for people to fill with nonperishable donations. Much appreciation goes out to the TBS Bargain Shop who canvassed their patrons to give a donation to the cause, and Young's General Store who again this year provided the freezer facility for the turkeys and hams. Each hamper consisted of a turkey, or pre-cooked ham, vegetables, fruit, festive dinner condiments, breakfast goodies extraordinaire and a gift for children 16 years and under, or a $25.00 gift voucher to ValuMart, Canadian Tire or TBS Store. All items in the hampers have been offered or purchased locally in our

The Year Is Over And Another Begins

Well here we are into another New Year, 2016 or MMXVI in the terms of my old Roman friends back in Caesar’s time.

I think I have probably started the first column of each year in almost the same way. Two reasons for that: First, it seems logical to start each year in the spirit of wishing everyone a Happy New Year and second, I always like to refer to the new year in terms of Roman count because it’s fun to express the years that way. It’s like a code, figuring out what letters of the Roman alphabet would represent this new year.

2015 was a good year in a lot of ways and a bad year in so many other ways. “The best of times, and the worst of times" you could say.

We elected a new federal government last year, a reflection of most people’s change of mood. Usually the result of the public weariness of the established government, the switch in such a determined and overwhelming way was perhaps a surprise to many.

Canada has also been creeping farther into war with militant Muslims, largely ISIS or terrorist groups who seem to spend an inordinate amount of effort fighting each other and blaming it on all Christians. And now that we have committed ourselves to making enemies in the Muslim world we seem to be intent on divorcing ourselves from the whole affair by pulling back our aircraft and getting out of the situation. Slim hope!

In the meantime the economic situation in this coun-

try has deteriorated a little more in the last year and is not expected to improve much in the coming year. It must be said that we certainly are not in the dire financial straits of much of the world, such as Greece and Spain and others.

On the bright side, El Nino has presented us with an unusually mild winter locally even though it seems to be kicking hell out of a lot of North America, especially in the West and South of our border. We’ve had a pretty fortunate winter so far.

On another front, Debra and I celebrated our 99th anniversary a couple of days ago. Well, not exactly “anniversary”, rather “99th month-a-versary!" When we got married back in 2007 I had warned Debra that she need not expect a long history of anniversaries since I was more than seventeen years older than her and I just might not survive long enough to pile up a big total.

And so we decided to count anniversaries by the month.

The whole idea worked pretty well for the first couple of years but soon began to look a little silly. And here we are at our 99th month-aversary just eight years and three months into our marriage. One thing about all this, the “Seven Year Itch” came and went so fast I never even noticed it.

Atv Driver Flees Police

(ESPANOLA, ON) – On December 27th, 2015 at approximately 12:20 a.m., officers from the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol on Lee Valley Road, Sables-Spanish Rivers Township and attempted to stop an eastbound All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) in order to check the driver’s sobriety.

The ATV did not stop and fled from police. As a result, officers turned off their emergency lights and did not initiate a pursuit. Officers were not able to get a description of the ATV but believe the driver was a male.

Officers are requesting the public’s assistance and ask that if anyone has any information regarding this incident, to please contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888310-1122 or their nearest police authority.

Road Rage Incident Leads To Collision – Drivers Charged

(SUDBURY, ON) – On December 26th, 2015, officers from the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a two vehicle collision on Highway 17, Lorne Township where both involved drivers were irate and yelling at each other.

Investigation revealed a Volkswagen Jetta pulled out of Hammersveld Rd. to proceed eastbound on Highway 17, Lorne Township followed by a Ford Focus. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Volkswagen slammed on his brakes and was rear-ended by the Ford car. None of the occupants were injured and both vehicles sustained minor damage.

The male driver of the Ford, Jordan Christopher HALLIDAY, age 31 of Whitefish, ON was charged with Follow Too Closely.

The male driver of the Volkswagen, Donald LEBLANC, age 24 of Azilda, ON was charged with Careless Driving.

As a result of the investigation, fatigue is considered to be a factor. Jessie DANIELL, 26 years of age, from Dryden, Ontario was issued a Provincial Offence Notice and charged with: Careless Driving contrary to section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act. Every person that sits behind the steering wheel of a motor vehicle has a responsibility to ensure that he or she and its passengers arrive to their destination safely. The OPP continues to target those who put the wellbeing of others at risk by operating motor vehicles in violation of provincial and federal legislation.

“Every motorist has to do their part to ensure a safe arrival by obeying all the rules of road to prevent any tragedies this Holiday Season”, says Inspector Yves Forget of the East Algoma Detachment.

Pedestrian Struck By Motor Vehicle

(THESSALON FIRST NATION, ON) – Thessalon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. The collision occurred on Biish Road, on private property at approximately 1:30 a.m. on December 24th, 2015.

The pedestrian, a 23 year old Windsor man sustained minor injuries and was transferred by ambulance to Hospital where he is being treated. The driver of the vehicle, a 29 year old Windsor woman was not injured.

Biish Road adjacent to the collision scene is currently closed and a detour is available around the site.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Thessalon Detachment, East Algoma Crime Unit and the Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI).

“Carrying the message of Love” with Joan Brooks

Love, Love, Love…

We are living, walking, talking, loving expressions of God. Yes, we are. We are a vessel of love and we are also a conduit of love. Isn’t that amazing that in this world where there is incredible, mind boggling chaos, it is also filled with peace, kindness and defining love. It is so easy to be caught up in the news that brings us in-depth conflict from other countries, and yes including our own.

However all we need to do is hit the off button and pick up a good book, or, tune into channels of love with great music or true life stories.

Thankfully it is a choice we have. Be the love we wish to see in others.

My morning reading on this Sunday was all about natural change. We are the universal seed, which unless it is planted, no plant will be produced. For me, the Christmas season is one of mixed emotions, some of them arising from my distant past, but now accepted all as divine love. As I grow in spirit, it is sometimes difficult to know and understand that this tiny universal seed is struggling

to burst, once more, into a greater divine love than I’ve ever known. Until then a reminder that I am love on the greatest journey there is.

Here is a beautiful prayer of compassion and service, written by Andrew Harvey, a poet, author and a scholar of mystic traditions. He envisions true spirituality to be the divinization of earthly life through spiritual practice. These practices can take many forms and can be taken from religious traditions. And as you come to bow in all directions, imagine now that you are a diamond that is radiating light in all directions healing the suffering, the agony of the world by your very presence – your transcendent and embodied presence. VIKING VOICES

In the spirit of giving, the students and staff of Michipicoten High School worked together this year to collect nonperishable food items and money for the Wawa Food Bank. The grade 11 University English class issued a challenge to all home rooms in a friendly competition to see which class could bring in the highest amount of money and food items. Larger items counted for more and every dollar equaled one food item. The winning class received a pizza lunch from AJ’s for their efforts. As an added incentive, Mr. McGregor agreed to dye his hair blue in the New Year if the school amassed 750 or more items.

The two week competition started off slowly, but on the final

few days, Mrs. Benka’s grade 9 class really came through with over 200 items to add to their class total. As gracious winners, the grade 9’s asked the grade 11 class to join them for pizza lunch. Once all the items and money were counted, the school collected 468 items and a whopping total of $620, eclipsing the 750 goal originally set forth for the challenge.

Michipicoten High School would like to thank everyone who helped donate for this worthy cause. Wawa Food Bank representative, Cindy Szekely, was very appreciative of the efforts put forth by the students and staff of MHS and would also like to send her thanks to all involved.

Alexander Von Who?

Who do you reckon was our greatest explorer? We've got lots of candidates – Magellan, Drake, Marco Polo, Cook and Columbus to name a handful.

Canada throws up some solid contenders – Champlain, Cabot, Mackenzie. For endurance you'd have to give Polar adventurer Roald Amundsen a shot. In terms of distance, Neil Armstrong is tough to beat.

But my money's on a chap named Humboldt. Alexander von Humboldt -- the greatest scientific explorer you've never heard of'.

It's not because his name's not out there. More than a hundred animals have 'Humboldt' in their scientific classifications, as do some 300 plants. We have a Humboldt glacier, a Humboldt Current, a Humboldt squid and a Humboldt Hog-Nosed Skunk. There's a rocky chunk of galactic debris called the Humboldt Asteroid winging its way around our sun. On the moon there's an area known as Mare Humboldtianum.

So who was this guy anyway?

One observer called him “the greatest scientific explorer whoever lived” - and that observer was Charles Darwin.

Indeed without Humboldt, there might never have been a Darwin – at least not the one we associate with the groundbreaking, mind-bending voyages that changed science forever. Darwin credited Humboldt's writing as the inspiration that urged him “to travel in distant countries, and led me to volunteer as naturalist in her Majesty’s ship Beagle.”

All of this from a sickly temperamental Prussian who's primary geographical experience came from a journey to the New World, most notably South America, commenced in 1799.

But what a journey.

It began in Venezuela where Humboldt took to a canoe and plunged into the rain forest, paddling up the Orinoco and mapping its union with an Amazon trib-

utary. Next, a nine-month, 1600 kilometre trek along the northern Andes including a scramble up the ice-capped Chimborazo volcano, more than 5,000 metres above sea level. Humboldt scaled every peak he could see with a singular obsession that bordered on mania. When his hiking boots shredded and fell apart he continued barefoot.

He was a tad manic. He ate sporadically and slept hardly at all. He wrote more than 50,000 letters (longhand, mind) trying vainly to keep up with his leapfrogging brain.

When he ran out of paper he continued right off the page, carving his thoughts into the wooden desk-top.

And he was fearless. He bathed in crocodile infested waters, performed near-fatal experiments with electric eels, survived a hurricane at sea and an earthquake on land, during which he assembled instruments to document the event while everyone else coweredin terror.

Darwin wasn't his only notable fan. He dined with U.S. President Thomas Jefferson and convinced him that Texas was worth fighting for, for which Jefferson thanked him profusely. “We have little knowledge of the Spanish colonies,” said Jefferson, “but through you.”

He hob-knobbed with Goethe and Wordsworth, Coleridge and Flaubert.

Pillars as various as Rachel Carson, Aldous Huxley and Ezra Pound absorbed his writings and sang his praises.

Two hundred years ago he was one of the most famous men on the planet; today if you asked ten people what the name Humboldt means to them, you'd get ten “Huhs?”

What happened?

Francis Bacon wrote: “Fame is like a river, that beareth up things light and swollen, and drowns things weighty and solid.”

Perhaps that explains why we forgot Alexander von Humboldt.

It certainly explains Donald Trump.

“I Feel Joy In My Heart!”

Article & photo by Joan Brooks “I feel joy in my heart,” says 10 year old Grace Dereski who has donated her birthday money for the past two years to the Haiti bakery fund. “I feel happy because I like to help!”

Grace is a grade five student at St. Joseph’s French Immersion school, the daughter of Sherry Egan Dereski and granddaughter of Dorothy Egan. Perhaps that explains the giving nature of Grace. “Last year and this year she has donated her birthday money for the Haiti bakery,” adds Paulette Albert continuing, “she’s given her shoes, her toys, her clothes last year to the (Haiti) kids, donated her DF – a game, I don’t know why, she just all of a sudden was going to do that. I didn’t think of it this year and she came into class on Monday saying ‘I’m giving you all my money for Haiti $84 – all my (birthday) cards I give to everyone , no gifts please just money for Haiti.

And I’ve given all of it.’

I asked Grace where she got her generous heart. “I want to help people, I guess because I saw the video that you guys made and I just wanted to help them out, because I saw a city that needed a little bit of love and help. I decided that maybe it would be good to make some money for them.” Would she like to go to Haiti? “Definitely! My mom came back and I asked why can’t I go with you guys, and my mom said ‘you can when you get older.’ In the meantime, Sherry and Emily fell in love with a little girl, Regina, who is the same age as Grace, and they wanted to bring her back. So much Love in this family…

For Paulette, fund raising and the low Canadian dollar make it difficult to fully complete the bakery project in Haiti. “Just before the

holidays I sent $3,045.00,” said Paulette. “Today, I sent $8,404.54 American from the $12,030.00 Canadian that we raised. As you can see we lost a few dollars on the exchange.

The good news is they can now buy the oven and a few small appliances. I'm hoping to be able to smell fresh bread in the New Year...WAHOO! “ Back to Grace’s wonderful donation, “Paulette continued adding with a full heart, “The $84 does help though, and what is so nice about it is getting the younger children involved. People as young as three care about other people.

Humanity! Paulette hopes to return to Haiti for a quick trip in March, where she expects to see the first loaves of bread out of the bakery.

For Paulette Albert and her team of volunteers, it’s been at least four years since they first began volunteering at the Foyer d’Accvueil Lasallien pour Enfants orphanage in Port de Paix. “When that orphanage first started out there were ten kids,” said Paulette adding “after the earthquake there were 150 children. And they kept them for a couple of months until they started finding their parents or families. There are still 53 children that have nowhere to go.”

Paulette and her Wawa for Haiti undertook at that time to financially support the building of the bakery. It has been a three year project and nearing completion. It’s going to be done! The purpose of the bakery is so they can generate a little bit of money, and allow more kids into the school to get educated. That school can hold almost 500.

And there are over 200 that go now. School includes all the kids from the orphanage and the community around it. We don’t want that project to fail!”

So 2016 has come and we hope everyone had a good holiday and wishing all a year of what it may bring you. Some of the better things we could maybe do ourselves by hard work and looking after those less fortunate.

New Years Eve was nice with hardly no snow but we had a white Christmas. This made me think about the dark days of Christmas 1944 and New Year 1945. Cold and no electricity, no gas and almost empty stores.

Men being picked up to dig fortifications to the west and east of town. We had recently moved from one house to another as the occupying army needed it because of its strategic point.

Mother had made a few decorations with crepe paper and we had a few rations from my foraging tour with my sister earlier. After dark, mom played the zither and we sang a few carols.

There was still very little news about the forthcoming liberation. Our liberators (The Canadian Army) was still in Nijmegen and south of the Rhine river waiting for the spring offensive. Those young

soldiers had their holidays doing patrols and sitting in foxholes looking across the Waal river where the enemy was digging also.

They didn't know that many of them would pay the ultimate price in next few months till May 8th, 1945. Those young soldiers were your grandfathers, uncles, cousins and even grandma's and aunts. So be happy this new year because of what they did so that all of us may live in peace.

At the Branch, we are ready to start the new Year with hope to have more volunteers to join our ranks and we need some younger bodies and minds to have some fresh ideas and make this the best Legion in the region.

Our Ladies Auxiliary has a few fund raisers planned: • A luncheon on the last Thursday of the month from 11:00 - 2:00 p.m.

• A sports spaghetti supper on January 14th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

• A dart tournament on January 23rd. Team darts prize distribution, dependent on donations for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, high score and

high finish.

Our cribbage players played last Saturday and 1st were Jeanette and Carol, 2nd Reg and John, 3rd Sandra and Alma. Boobs were Carol and Joan. The meat draw was won

by Cliff Ingham and 50/50 by Ken Schneider. And we have to thank Erin who is a big help selling 50/50 tickets. Good show lass.

4 Students were 50 minutes late for their exam because they had partied the night before. So they agreed to tell the school that they had a flat tire and had to change it and so they did.

"Ok" said the examiner who seemed to understand the situation and said, "Maybe you can still get it done."

He put each of the boys in a separate room and gave each of them a piece of paper. But at their amazement there was only one question on it, "Which tire was flat??"

To all our Comrades sick at home, in the hospital or nursing homes, you are in our thoughts and prayers and we wish you well.

The Mine Murder Mystery

“Did you hear what happened yesterday?” That was the question going around this Wednesday morning of January 2nd, 1963 in the town of Wawatchie. (It was founded along the northern shore of Talbot Lake in the late 1880's as an iron ore depot centre.

Northeast of town was the iron ore mine, where the ore was extracted and moved by truck to the docks on the lake shore. Steamer boats came in and loaded the ore and moved it out to the processing mills down south. It was a closeknit community of roughly 1600 residents – or 1625, depending on which sign you believe. When you drive in from the east, it reads 1625, but when you come in from the west, the sign reads 1600. It has been a long-standing joke among folks).

One of those raising the question this day was Mel Swanson.

He was the next door neighbour of Pierre Lavoie. They were both shovelling their driveways early this morning. It had snowed overnight, and they needed to get out for work. Mel worked at the mine as a bulldozer operator. Pierre was in the payroll department in the office. Mel was on the day shift during this scheduled rotation, whereas Pierre worked days all the time, Monday through Friday.

“No, what happened?” Pierre asked him. “Well, apparently (isn't that a sure sign that the gossip mill is alive and well. JW) they found the body of the mechanic, Hans Ibbermann, in the garage up at the mine not long after the 8 am shift change. What a Happy New Year for him, eh? With a skeleton crew on for the New Year's shift, it took a while for the body to be discovered. Supposedly he was attacked from behind, knocked unconscious, and then strangled with the help of the hoist. He didn't have a chance to save himself at all. I was told that Max Sinow, one of the guys in shipping that was working that day found him.

He went to the garage to get some electrical tape that he needed to seal up a box for shipping. He found the garage in darkness when he got to the door. There was a sign in the window saying it was closed for New Year's Day. But he tried the door, anyway – just like we all do, we have to check it out for ourselves. Indeed, he did find it unlocked. So he went in, turned on the lights, and found that horrific scene. He ran back out and looked for Peter Gerrard from security.

He found him making his rounds.

Back at the garage Gerrard found Hans dangling from the hoist, with a chain wrapped around his neck.

He found a wrench laying on the floor nearby. They also found the wallet of George Burnside nearby.

He must have dropped it during the attack and never noticed it before he left. It looks pretty grim for George.

I remember how those two got into an argument at the Christmas party at the Legion, and they nearly came to blows. Fortunately a couple of others separated them before it came to that.”

Pierre commented, “Yes, I remember that. It sure put a damper on the party for a while, didn't it.”

Mel agreed, and then went on with what he had heard from his brother, Stan. “Well, they figured

that the two of them must have gotten into it again yesterday during their shift. George must have totally lost it this time, and murdered him in a fit of rage. Why they put those two working together, considering their animosity towards each other, I don't know..”

Pierre reminded him: “The schedule was made up nearly a month ago. Who could have expected this could have lead to such a horrific end.”

“Yeah, I guess. Oh well, anyway, the police came in to investigate further. Stan told me that they arrested George yesterday evening. It should be an interesting shift today. I'm sure everyone will have a different story to tell.”

That turned out to be true.

Stories abounded, from previous fights those two had, to overheard threats made at the restaurant, the hardware store, the beer store, and at work. It was all fodder for the rumour mill.

George Burnside was not able to raise bail at his hearing on the Friday after the 'alleged' murder up at the mine. But in the Saturday newspaper, The Wawatchie Advocate, there was an interview by it's only reporter where he claimed that he did not kill Hans, although he hated him enough to do it.

He was framed, he insisted. He didn't know how his wallet got there near the body. He never missed it from his coat pocket.

Someone must have gotten into his locker after he went to the garage when he first came to work, and placed it there at the scene, in order to incriminate me, he claimed.

That's the only explanation he could come up with.

He went on to admit that they had nearly come to blows at work that day over a disagreement of the work that was required for this one particular one-ton truck. He claimed that all that was needed was a new set of spark plugs, while Hans felt the carburetor needed to be changed. In frustration he threw a wrench at him, and stormed out of the garage. He never saw him again that day, and he certainly was alive when he left him. He was so mad that he decided to pack it in for the day, and punched out at 9:15 a.m., which could be verified by checking the punch card. The reporter pointed out that actually that was not correct.

The card showed 9:30 a.m. That was a quarter hour difference. He also pointed out that the coroner had made a best guess of the time of death to be 9:00 a.m. So that was within the time period that proved he was actually there close to the estimated time of death.

Since there were no witnesses to see him actually leave the mine, the card showed a discrepancy with his story, the reporter pointed out.

The scuttlebutt around town became the fact that it had been a grizzly murder, and that George was the murderer. George remained in jail, since he couldn't raise the bail. However, since the trial was not scheduled until April, this event soon faded from everyday conversation.

But it all came back into focus as the trial began that April in the District court house in Soomarie.

That was a city about 200 kms away. Since most of the folks from Wawatchie couldn't get there, they relied on the newspaper for reports

of the trial.

The reporter from the paper detailed the proceedings of the trial in each day's paper: The Crown presented its' case first to the jury.

The Crown Attorney contended, and would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Burnside had attacked Ibbermann with a wrench and then killed him there in the garage after a violent argument and struggle. In his fit of rage, he strung him up to the hoist. With the chain around his neck, he strangled him.

Then to give himself some time to get away, and delay the finding of the body, he closed up the garage, and put up that sign.

Witnesses included co-workers and other townsfolk who confirmed the acrimony between these two men had been going on for several months prior to the 'alleged' murder, as the Crown Attorney had to say until the jury proclaimed it as a murder by the hands of George Burnside. There was one surprise witness, Oscar Yoos, who claimed to have heard them bickering back and forth while working on that truck. He approached George who said that he had had just about enough of that guy – being Hans Ibbermann. Yoos left quickly before getting involved what appeared to be a tense situation, he swore. That created quite a buzz among the public gallery, the reporter noted. The next one up was Victor Grimaldi, a tram operator, who just happened to be going past the garage on his way to the bathroom. He swore that he saw George leaving work about ten a.m. On cross examination, however, the defense got him to admit that he was only guessing, as he didn't have his watch on, nor was there a clock around the area. He was just guessing, based on when he left his work area to go to the bathroom. But other forensic evidence and the coroner's testimony about the time of death, swung the case back to a certain guilty verdict, most agreed......

Then it was the Defense's turn to prove him not guilty. The first attack was the contradiction of the time of death. The prosecution had used the initial report of the coroner's estimation of death as being nine a.m. That fit in perfectly with the time line it presented to the jury. But the defense had hired its' own coroner, and he determined that the time of death was closer to ten a.m. That proved that George had already left prior to that time. The defense lawyer, Paul Hemsworth, used the prosecution's own evidence to win another point. The time card showed George clocking out at 9:15 a.m. No one tried to prove one way or the other that it was actually George who had punched his card. Could someone else have punched it for him? Several of the workers at the mine had wondered that themselves, but never voiced their thoughts to the lawyer. But one concerned citizen did phone Mr. Hemsworth about it.

The next day he asked for a postponement to the following week, in order to follow up on some new information that could be pertinent to his client's case, the paper noted. Since that was a Thursday, the judge agreed.

The following Monday the case came to a crashing and surprising conclusion. The first witness Hemsworth called was the office manager, Steven Randall. After being sworn in, Hemsworth began his examination, “Mr. Burnside's punch card has been entered into evidence. I just want to confirm that he, and only he, could punch this card.” Randall replied, after hesitating momentarily, “Er,

well, no anyone could of, I guess.

The cards are all stacked beside the clock, with their name and employee number printed on the top. A new one is used every week.

The completed ones are brought to payroll for payment.”

Hemsworth nodded, as if deep in thought. “But the real murderer could have canceled out the original time Mr. Burnside punched out, and put in a new time of arrival, and a new checkout time. That would work to show up as being after the time of the murder. For example if the murderer knew that the coroner would pinpoint the time of murder as nine, he could then go back and put in a new time, reflecting a closer time prior to 9 a.m. That would make my client look guilty. Is that not possible, sir?”

Randall blustered, thinking about how the system worked.

He prided himself as running a 'tight ship', running efficiently and foolproof. “Highly unlikely sir.

The only way that could be done would be for the time clock to be manually moved to 9:30 and then re-punched. The original card showing 9:15 could then be pulled out and destroyed. Then the clock would have to be re-set to the proper time of 9:15. The only people with keys to the clock are myself and our payroll clerk, Mr. Lavoie. And he wasn't even in working that January 1st. And I was out of town visiting my parents in Ottawa over the holidays.”

Hemsworth replied: “Yes, I am aware that you were away. I wasn't implying that you were guilty of anything, Mr. Randall. Thank you, that's all. I would like to call Mr. Pierre Lavoie to the stand.”

Apparently there was quite a murmur among the visitors in the gallery, according to the paper. He appeared quite calm as he took the stand, the report went on.

Hemsworth began: “You have just heard the testimony of Mr. Randall. Do you wish to refute anything he said to the court?”

Lavoie hesitated, obviously worried about saying anything that would come back to haunt him. You could just see the glare he gave the lawyer, clearly disliking him and all lawyers, the newspaper report noted.

Finally he said that the thought everything Mr. Randall had said was correct. Then Hemsworth asked: “Did you take out Mr. Burnside's card, and adjust it as he suggested it could be done?”

Lavoie's glare was obvious as he refuted that statement, and declared that he did no such thing.

He added, “I was not even at work that day.” Hemsworth looked puzzled. “I beg to differ, but your wife claims that you told her that you had to go to the office to get caught up some paperwork for that week's payroll. She told my assistant that she was quite annoyed that you had to go out on New Year's Day. She told him that you left your house about seven that morning.

Obviously you had a quiet New Year's celebration, in order to be up that early.” There was some chuckling from the gallery with that comment. The judge brought down his gavel for silence. Then Hemsworth went on.

“I contend, sir, that it was you that scheduled these two men to work on the same shift that New Year's Day. You are the one who makes up the schedules, right. You had your own reasons for wanting Mr. Ibbermann dead. I will get to that momentarily. You picked a good day, when there was a skeleton staff working. There would not have been too many workers in your way to arrange his murder.

You had been watching them at the garage, hoping for a deadly encounter to happen. When Mr. Burnside stormed out, you saw your chance to kill him yourself, obviously your second choice. You knew you would never get another chance, so you took action.

You hit him with the wrench you picked up off the work bench that had Mr. Burnside's fingerprints on it, and hit him in the side of the head, knocking him unconscious.

Of course, you had put on your gloves to avoid your fingerprints from showing up on it. After that, you got him hooked up to that hoist, pulling him up until he was strangled to death. To further ensure he was dead, and likely for shock value to those who discovered him, you punctured his chest with a screwdriver, leaving it sticking out. Adds to the appearance of an attack from rage. Earlier, just after Mr. Burnside had punched in for work, you went into my client's locker and got his wallet out of his coat pocket. After all you have the combinations to all the lockers, so that would have been easy to do.

You placed it near the hoist, so the police would connect the crime with him. Very clever! Later you adjusted the time, as Mr. Randall explained just a moment ago, to make it fit within the time frame that you had heard the coroner claim as the approximate time of death. You got that info from the security guard, Mr. Peter Gerrard.

So it appears that you had committed the perfect murder. However, there is one little mistake that has tripped you up. Thanks to my own coroner's report, the time of death actually was closer to ten a.m. That means that Mr. Burnside had left the building long before Mr. Ibbermann was murdered. Mr. Gerrard confirmed to my assistant that he saw you at the plant that morning, and he give you the coroner's estimated time of death, and that he saw you leaving about four that afternoon. That would have given you plenty of time to clean up any loose ends before your manager got back from holidays – which leads me to the final thing -why you had to kill Mr. Ibbermann.

He had discovered your scheme to alter your own payroll hours, adding extra time on each week's totals, in order to boost your own take-home pay. He caught you at the time punch machine one day tampering with it. He confronted you about it, and then began blackmailing you, along with making you adjust his time too. It was working fine for a while too, until you learned that the auditors were coming in January of this year. You had to get rid of him, in case he talked, plus it was getting too difficult to have to adjust two people's payroll. It would be very noticeable to the auditors. You used their feud as a cover. And it nearly worked.

I rest my case. Your Honour, I recommend that you arrest Mr. Lavoie for murder, embezzlement, and whatever charges the Crown feels as appropriate.”

The judge asked him: “Do you have anything to say about what Mr. Hemsworth has claimed here?”

He replied: “I have nothing to say until I get a lawyer.”

And just like in all the old Perry Mason TV programs, the Crown Attorney was forced to drop all charges, and declare Mr. Burnside free, and then had to arrest Mr. Lavoie. Who would have guessed he did this? Remember back on January 2nd when he was talking to his neighbour, Mr. Swanson, pleading ignorance of what had happened at the mine. Pretty smooth, eh! You just never know, do you?

The Municipality of Wawa conducted a silent auction on November 28th and encouraged bidders to bring canned goods for the Food Bank to this event. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

The Community Christmas, sponsored by Superior Children’s Centre and organized by Pauline Dawson and Robin Marshall Davidson also collected canned goods. We extend our thanks to you as well.

Michipicoten High School delivered a much appreciated pickup truck full of non-perishables and a cheque from their staff student fundraiser. As Ray McGregor, coordinator of this venture said, “For a school of just over 100 kids, this is pretty incredible!”

These students have certainly demonstrated the spirit of giving.

Our local EDC personnel – Emily Cormier, Jessie Labonte and Maury O’Neill - organised Hot Chocolate With The Mayor on December 18 which provided another opportunity for donations. Algoma Power selected Wawa Community Food Bank as this year’s recipient of their regional food drive and staff fundraising and presented their donations on this day. Many thanks for this generosity.

Wawa has once again shown its care and concern for the less fortunate among us. Volunteers continue to be amazed by the outstanding support extended to what is truly a Community Food Bank.
