Wawa Goosed For Canada Day Article by Brian Lachine Photos provided by Kristen Sabourin Photography and Michael Mantha As Canada was celebrating its birthday on July 1st, something even more special was happening in Wawa.

The day started the same way many days start in our town: fog. Then rain. At 6:00 a.m. that morning, the leadership of the event made the call to go ahead with the celebration at our Tourist Information Center.

The stage was set up, tables put out for artisans and the BBQ fired up in anticipation of a crowd that was here to celebrate Canada, the new Wawa Goose and great music provided by the Wawa Music Festival.

As the crowd grew, so did the excitement of the day. There was well over 1,000 people who attended the goose unveiling and the singing of O’Canada before special dignitaries were invited to share their story about the Wawa Goose.

Hosted by Wawa’s CAO, Chris Wray, Carol Hughes (MP), Michael Mantha (MPP), Chief Patty Tangie (MFN), Scott Hawkes (President & CEO of Fortis Ontario), Tim Lavoie (Vice President of Fortis Ontario), Ken Lee (Former Councillor), Bruce

Strapp (Executive Director of NOFHC), Alexis Alexopolous and Mayor Ron Rody all added a personal touch to this great event.

The celebration concluded with an outstanding dance presentation lead by Samantha Stewart and the Canada 150 Dance Group. The theme of the dance was of unity and celebration. Shortly after the dance Mayor Ron Rody concluded the unveiling with a ceremonial cake cutting that was made by Tracy Chalykoff and cupcakes provided by Sabrina White.

Thank you to all who made this lifetime event possible. Our new Wawa Goose is now in place to be in pictures, postcards and selfies for many years to come!

INSPECTION Inspection of Approved Aerial Herbicide Spraying Big Pic, Pic River, White River and Nagagami Forests The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invites you to inspect the MNRFapproved aerial herbicide spray projects. As part of our ongoing efforts to regenerate and protect Ontario’s forests, selected stands on the Big Pic, Pic River, White River and Nagagami Forests (see map) will be sprayed with herbicide to control competing vegetation, starting on or about: August 2, 2017. The herbicide VisionMax, glyphosate, registration P.C.P. # 27736 Pest Control Products Act will be used.

The approved project description and project plan for the aerial herbicide project is available for public inspection at the Jack Fish River Management Ltd. Office, the Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation (NFMC), and on the MNRF public website at ontario.ca/forestplans beginning August 2, 2017 until March 31, 2018 when the Annual Work Schedule expires.

The ServiceOntario Centre at the Wawa District Office, 48 Mission Road provides access to the Internet.

Interested and affected persons and organizations can arrange an appointment with MNRF staff at the MNRF District or Area Office to discuss the aerial herbicide project.

Wawa Waste Disposal Site Capacity Expansion The Corporation of the Municipality of Wawa The Municipality of Wawa has initiated the Environmental Screening Process for Waste Management Projects under the Environmental Assessment Act to identify the preferred method to provide additional domestic non-hazardous waste disposal capacity.

This study will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. Since publishing the Notice of Commencement in September 2016, the Municipality has been working toward completion of the Screening steps, prescribed under the Environmental Assessment Act, and is conducting the first of several consultations with those interested and affected.

Michipicoten Chronicles

Commercial Fishing There is nothing tastier than locally caught whitefish or lake trout from the clear, cool waters of Lake Superior.

For many of us, this is a tasty treat on a special occasion.

But for centuries, this was a crucial part of the daily diet of Northern Algoma residents.

Ojibwe families depended on the abundance of fish in the fertile river beds, submerged shoals and spawning grounds of eastern Superior’s dramatic shoreline. Archaeologists have uncovered and surveyed numerous early encampments near the mouths of streams which played host to the annual migrations of both fish and humans.

The success of the early fur trading posts, like those at the mouth of the Michipicoten River, depended on the fishing skills of the local native populations, as well as the abundance of this accessible food during the harsh winter seasons. The fur trade personnel quickly adopted the fishing strategies and methods of their Ojibway neighbors and utilized the salting and preservation practices of commercial fishermen.

Herring, whitefish, lake trout, sucker and sturgeon were the popular species. Post employees quickly developed an efficient schedule of dates, locations, and netting practices for the most productive catches.

By 1839 the Hudson’s Bay Company not only processed furs for profit, they also began harvesting and selling Superior fish on a commercial scale. In 1840, Michipicoten House shipped 800 barrels of fish to American markets on the HBCo. schooner Whitefish which began regular tours of various fish sta-

tions along the eastern shoreline. Batchawana, Agawa, Cape Gargantua, Cape Chaillon and Michipicoten Bay and Island were strategic locations for fish and fur in the mid-1800’s. Even the tiny islands off the Agawa Pictographs and Katherine Cove became important fishing stations due to their proximity to some of the best whitefish and lake trout spawning shoals on the Great Lakes.

Fishing took place all through the year. Fish catches were sometimes so abundant that herring were used as trout bait or fed to the dogs living at the Pic River Post.

Whitefish caches were used as cattle feed at Michipicoten. Licenses and limits were unheard of. By 1850, the commercial fishing on Superior fell into decline.

While the fish populations recovered, the commercial fishing activities remained somewhat dormant until the 1870’s when smaller scale operations began to emerge.

Booth Fisheries re-established an important station on South Lizard Island in 1871 along with Messrs Sharman and Roussain. Fishing stations later developed in Gargantua Harbour in the 1880’s and on the tiny Agawa Islands in the late 1920’s. These remote fishing operations would send a boat load of fish to the Sault twice weekly, a round trip normally taking 16 hours if everything went smoothly.

Once the ACR reached the headlands east of Agawa, fish would be transported to the mouth of the Agawa River, then carted up the Frater Road to Frater Station. As the highway construction inched its way up the rugged

shoreline north of Sault Ste. Marie in the 1940’s, Agawa area fish boats would deliver their catches to Mamainse Harbour (a two hour trip), then Montreal River (only a one hour trip).

Commercial fish from Michipicoten were also transported out of Michipicoten Harbour and made up a large percentage of freight on the Caribou and Manitou ferries on their southbound trip back to Sault Ste. Marie and Owen Sound.

Passengers often recalled the fishy aroma during their 12 hour tour from Michipicoten to Sault Ste. Marie, and hoped that stormy weather did not extend their time next to the fish freight any longer than necessary.

Intensive fishing of Superior’s native fish stocks, plus the introduction of the sea lamprey to Lake Superior through the St. Lawrence seaway in the 1940’s, led to a devastating crash of fish populations that some would argue has never truly recovered. Commercial fishing along the eastern Superior coast continues to provide local markets and restaurants with their tasty harvest. Yet the abandoned fishing stations, submerged docks and scattered fish floats along their traditional routes are all that remains of a once vibrant industry essential to the survival of Northern Algoma residents.

Bolt Across Canada Stops In Wawa

Article & Photo by Kari Smith Just before newspaper deadline on Monday, July 10th, I had an interesting visit. A Chevy Bolt pulls up to the door covered in logos looking to see if I could print a decal of the Wawa Motor Inn's logo. Why? Buddy and his stylish pup wearing the sunglasses, Piper, are headed across Canada in their new Chevy Bolt. The car is 100% electric. Buddy and his better half, Barb, are staying at the Wawa Motor Inn. Did you know that the Wawa Motor Inn has a plug in outlet just for electric cars? Well they do! I've noticed it every time I walk by, but never actually witnessed an electric car plugged into it.

The couple and their pup

are challenging the way we look at travelling. Yes, you can leave the city centres with an electric vehicle and not get stranded. They left Victoria, British Columbia on July 1st and have now made it to the heart of Canada without a hiccup. They'll be eventually dipping their tires into the Pacific Ocean as their trip comes to an end.

This is their Canada 150th project, raising awareness and promoting Zero waste.

Their day job? They own a recycling company in British Columbia - how fitting! In his past, Buddy was a truck driver and just like all us Northern Ontarians who swear by their old faithful 4x4 truck, this is his first car. He did his research and bought a car that would last and put

a point on the side of reliability in this disposable world we live in. In addition to the car, they are using dissolvable bags for Pipers per stops, and even have a compost in the car with them, all the while, bringing attention to our small communities and saying, "Hey, we all can do a little something! If we don't challenge the ways things are being done, nothing will ever change."

The Bomb Scare Talk about being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

That was me on this Sunday, July 9, 2017. I was just passing through Wawa on my way back home in Toronto, after attending a funeral for my grandfather in Thunder Bay last Thursday.

I had stopped about 8:00 p.m. at your new Wawa Goose for a rest before I headed out to the Soo. I had been standing on the west side of the Tourist Centre, looking out over the bluff, taking in the view of the hills, the river, and the highway heading to Thunder Bay, which I had just drove on. From there I headed over to get that obligatory photo of the Goose, like everyone does who passes by, right!

Just as I reached the corner of the building I saw two men standing by the Goose .

I stopped dead in my tracks.

It was their appearance. They were dark skinned and had long straight black hair. They were both dressed in a black jacket and black baggy sweat pants. Of course I immediately jumped to the conclusion that they must be ISIS terrorists. I know that I should not have done that, but in this day and age, with all that's going on in the Middle East and indeed the whole world it is a natural assumption, isn't it? But who knows? Maybe they were just students heading to a summer job? One of them was tall and lanky. The other one was shorter, with a slender build. In my initial quick look, I guessed they were both in their early twenties.

The other reason I stopped was that I noticed their nervous glances as they huddled over what appeared to be two backpacks. Then I heard them talking with a foreign accent that was very hard for me to understand. But what I did hear sent shivers down my spine.

The shorter one said, “Why did you change from name to Andy Barton? After all your name is Aswan el-Barada. You should be proud to use it. It is a beautiful name.” He replied, “Amir Alakewa, your name is beautiful too. I am glad you are keeping it. For me as your cell leader, I needed to change my name to blend in with the Western lifestyle. Fortunately for you, the success of the operation is not dependent on that. I don't mean to demean you or your importance to what we have to do. It's just the way it is.

Your role as a 'gopher', to use a Western slang, is just as important as mine or the rest of our cell. You are our deflector of the authorities away from me. They can follow you while you pick up innocent supplies to bring back to your apartment and store them until we need them to assemble our bombs. You have been a wonderful mole, and blended in quite well. Your time at McGill University in the

electrical engineering program has given you valuable tools we can now use. Your computer skills are also invaluable.”

Amir nodded and thanked him for those kind words. Then he went on, “Do you think it is wise to set off a bomb here now that the operation is coming together so well, and so close to the day of reckoning, praise be to Allah? That also leads me to the question of why we didn't do this on their July 1st – 150 they are calling it? There would have been so many people to kill in so many locations. When we were in Winnipeg on the first would have been as good a place as any to have done it. The crowed would not have been be thinking of bad things happening. Of course the security was tight. That would have been a problem. I know you tried to explain it to me before, but please go over with me once more, Aswan.”

Aswan replied, “First, yes, I see your point about setting off these bombs here. And you have hit on the crucial matter.

Security was tight, as we saw on TV. I disagree partly with you in that the people would be enjoying the day all right, but still be on the lookout for anything suspicious. That is one of the weaknesses in our overall plans.

We have got them being on the alert too much now. However, that was not part of the master plan developed for us here in Canada. I do have some leeway in adjusting it, if necessary. This is one such case. We need to practice our bomb making skills and detonation techniques to ensure we are ready for the time we are in Ottawa, and set for September 11th. It seems a waste to just explode one in an empty parking lot or gravel pit, or wherever we can find a place to safely to do it. No, let's blow up this Wawa Goose.

It's a symbol of Western decadence. Imagine a silly idol of a goose, no less. These Western infidels make me laugh sometimes. No, it will be good.

We will have destroyed one of their symbols, plus distract the authorities from down south.”

Amir seemed to not be assured.

He questioned him again, “Are you sure you have the OK for this from your Operational Supervisor?” Aswan seemed annoyed at his authority being questioned. He tersely said: “Yes, I just told you that I have the freedom to do whatever I deem necessary to ensure the success of the operation. So I have all the authority I need right here.” I saw him point to the one backpack. He finished by saying “So that's the end of this conversation. Let's get on with getting these bombs set up, watching our handiwork go kaboom, and then go back to town for supper. I have some phone calls to make later at the motel before we go to bed.”

I was paralyzed with fear and horror. I was dismayed to learn that my first instinct was right after all. They were terrorists. I couldn't decide whether to stay and try and stop it myself, or take a chance on running to my car over in the parking lot without being seen or stopped.

Of all the times, why couldn't there be a tourist or somebody come in to help me out, or scare them off, I muttered. I decided to stay for just a bit longer anyway. I wanted to memorize their features, so I could give a detailed description to the police. Also, they were huddled together, with their back to me.

I watched in amazement at their skill, plus the simple everyday products they were using to get these bombs set up. That was also the moment when I poked my head around the corner of the building and took their picture. I knew that would help too for later, in identifying them. I just hoped they wouldn't hear the click, or look my way. But it turned out okay.

Shortly, I heard them discussing the timer part, and how long it should be. Amir suggested one minute would be enough. Aswan was more cautious. He suggested 5 minutes would be better, as that would give them more time to get in position to watch the explosion from afar. Amir countered that it would be too long, as tourists might come in and discover it, and call the police. He went on to remind Aswan about those bomber brothers in Boston at the Marathon race back a few years ago, and how people are more suspicious of these sort of backpacks just laying around, unclaimed. Finally they compromised on a two minute time delay. Then it appeared to be set up and activated. Aswan tucked it up on the pedestal under the Goose where it would not be noticed easily.

Then Aswan said, “Now let's get the other one set up with the remote detonator. That is your department. Away you go. Do your magic.” He replied, “My, aren't you getting Westernized – such cute expressions!” He went to work. I looked at my watch, and timed him. He had it set up in ten minutes, and strapped it around the Goose's neck.. That left me only 2 minutes to have them leave and me to get the two bombs away from the statue and thrown down the gully. I prayed Aswan didn't set off his remote bomb until he heard the first one go off.

I heard Aswan say, “Good, let's get back to the car, and watch what happens.” I ducked back away from the corner of the Tourist Centre building and pressed myself against the wall.

I hoped they didn't see me. I waited a few seconds and was relieved that they did not come that way. So I dashed to the other end of the building to see if I could see them get to their car. On the way I tried the door to the Centre, but found out it was locked, and no one was inside. Their car was parked in the first spot by the sidewalk to the Centre. Unfortunately my car was parked further away, and this would make it impossible to reach now. Unfortunately

for me Aswan was just getting in the driver's side, when he glanced my way. He yelled to Amir that they had a witness, as he pointed right at me. I made a quick mental note that it was a nondescript cherry red four-door sedan that could have been a Toyota Camry maybe, as I bolted back along the walkway towards the goose. My camera was still around my neck, but it was turned off by then, and I did not have a chance to get another photo of them or their car or get the license plate. I knew that I had to get those bombs away from the Goose.

I only hoped that I would get there first before either of them went off, or the two of them got to me. However, I underestimated the height of the pad.

It was taller than I was, and I saw that I was going to have to jump up just to get my hands on top of the base, and hoist myself up onto it. I leaped up okay and was just getting myself hoisted up when the two of them arrived, and grabbed my legs and pulled me down. We ended up in a pile. In the ensuing struggle, Amir got free and leaped onto the base successfully, and grabbed his backpacks.

He jumped back to the ground.

Aswan and I both gasped as he landed. We were afraid the jarring would trigger the bombs to go off on their own. I lost track of the time left, but suspected it could only be seconds. I braced myself for the blast. But nothing happened, thank goodness!

Amir declared. “I don't know why it didn't go off. We'll have to check it out back at the room.

We have to double check our circuits to be sure they are correct. C'mon, let's get out of here.” Aswan called out to him as he started to head back to their car, “Wait. We have to do something with this guy. He has seen us and knows what we are up to.” At that moment, I noticed the subtle shift of power over to Amir. He stated: “Well, we can bash his head in on this base until he is dead. Or how about beheading him? That is a perfect calling card, for sure.

But we can't decide here and now. We will have to bring him with us. Get that camera off his neck too. We need to destroy it, in case he took our picture.” I was panic stricken at this talk. I knew if I ever got into that car, I would die a painful death. It was the talk of the beheading that terrified me the most. An impulsive thought entered my head: why did I not just run? I could have been safe, and maybe have gotten help out here before the bombs went off.

Why did I want to be the hero to stop them? Then another different jolt, Yes, I did stop the bombing. Then came the realization that it was not really me that saved the Goose, but that their wiring or something they did was what stopped the bombs from going off. I had no more time for thinking.

I just had a moment before I saw the one backpack being swung at the side of my head. It stunned me into a momentary paralysis. It made it a lot easier for them to drag me to their car, along with their 2 bombs. They dropped me to the ground by

the back of the car while they got the trunk open. Amir gently put the bombs in the back seat. Aswan yanked the camera off my neck and threw it in the trunk. I knew I was next. That would be the end of me if I let that happen. So I mustered all my strength into a burst of energy – that fight or flight reaction. I jumped up and made a beeline for my car. I clicked my remote, and set off the alarm. I hated that piercing noise normally when I would accidentally trigger it off in a parking lot. Tonight, it was the most beautiful sound in the world. It also brought me luck.

Just then an OPP cruiser was driving by. He heard the noise, and saw my frantic waving. He pulled in the one entrance and stopped beside me. I pointed to the car fleeing out of the other driveway, and quickly told them who they were and what they were up to, and that they had my camera with photos of them that would have helped in their identification. He told me to go to the station and give the officer there all the details that I could remember. He headed out with flashing lights, and turned at the intersection of Highway 17, going south, in hot pursuit.

My head began to throb severely, but I went to the station. Once I began my story, I began to shake, and had to make a mad dash to the washroom to throw up. Nerves, shock, and being hit on the side of the head caused it, I guessed. Anyway, after that I felt better, except for the headache that was beginning to really pound against my temples. I settled down to continue reporting about my harrowing experience. Just then there was a real flurry of radio activity inthe background. But I heard the dreaded news in one transmission that he had lost them. It was dark by then, so I was not too surprised at that.

Then I heard the radio operator call for the Sault Ste. Marie detachment to be on the alert.

Eventually I was able to finish my statement. I told them about remembering that they had said they were staying at a motel south of town. They began checking those, but found no one at any of them.

They had slipped away.

I finally got out of there. It was now my turn to get a motel room, but in town, as it was late, and I was in no shape to drive anymore that night.

I don't know how those guys could have disappeared so easily, but they were resourceful, so it is not too surprising, I guess. I sure hope they find them, though, because I want my camera back. There are lots of family photos on it that I took at the funeral. But also I hope they catch them before they get those bombs fixed, and have a chance to detonate them in Ottawa at the Parliament buildings I suspect, or anywhere else before then.

This is my story that I have told in an interview to one of the reporters of your local paper, The Algoma News Review, on Monday, July 10th for the Wednesday paper.

Passed away at the Lady Dunn Health Centre after a courageous and long fought battle with cancer on Friday July 7, 2017.

Beloved wife of Doug Johnson for nearly 20 years. Loving mother and friend of Kathleen Johnson. Lori will be lovingly remembered by Doug’s children Norman Johnson (Cindy), Tom Johnson (Bonnie) and their children Gloria, Ruth and Marlene.

Dear daughter of Nancy and Robert Cooper. Loving sister of Cheryl Reid (late Ron), Shelley VanHeyningen (Anthony), Chris Cooper (Ida) and Stacey Knock (Johnathon). Lori will be remembered by her nephews, family and extended family. Lori battled valiantly for two and half years with a very rare type of cancer, cancer of the duodenum.

Her wish would be to educate everyone on this rare disease.

A Celebration of Lori’s life will be held at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre (Chris Simon Drive) on Tuesday July 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ron Henson officiating. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the “Project Life Savers”, c/o Alzheimer Society of Wawa, an organization that Lori was beginning to fund-raise for. Invitation to Public Open House Environmental Screening Process Wawa Waste Disposal Site Capacity Expansion The Corporation of the Municipality of Wawa The Municipality of Wawa has initiated the Environmental Screening Process for Waste Management Projects under the Environmental Assessment Act to identify the preferred method to provide additional domestic non-hazardous waste disposal capacity.

This study will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. Since publishing the Notice of Commencement in September 2016, the Municipality has been working toward completion of the Screening steps, prescribed under the Environmental Assessment Act, and is conducting the first of several consultations with those interested and affected.

NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT Proposed Wawa Transformer Station Expansion Hydro One Networks Inc. (Hydro One) is initiating a Class Environmental Assessment (EA) to expand the existing Wawa Transformer Station (TS), located just north-east of Anjigami Lake, and approximately 20 km east of the Municipality of Wawa. This project is required to connect NextBridge Infrastructure’s proposed new East-West Tie transmission line to the station.

As part of this project, the following work is being proposed: • Installation of new electrical equipment such as circuit breakers and disconnect switches; • Connection of NextBridge’s proposed new line to the station and reconfiguration of existing line connections; and • Installation of a new relay building, which would house electronic devices critical for safety, reliability, and security of the power system.

To accommodate this work, the existing Wawa TS would be expanded by approximately half a hectare, as shown on the map.

The proposed Wawa TS Expansion Project is subject to the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities (Hydro One, 2016), in accordance with the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. The Class EA is a streamlined planning process that has proven effective in ensuring that minor transmission projects that have a predictable range of effects have feasible environmental mitigation and/or protection measures in place. The Class EA Process contains screening provisions that may apply to this project. In addition, approval from the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) is required for the proposed new East-West Tie Project and all associated work, including the proposed station expansion at Wawa TS. Contingent on the completion of the Class EA process and OEB approval, construction could begin as early as mid-2018 to meet the planned in-service date of December 2020.

AVIS DE LANCEMENT ÉVALUATION ENVIRONNEMENTALE DE PORTÉE GÉNÉRALE Projet d’expansion du poste de transformation de Wawa Hydro One Networks Inc. (Hydro One) entreprend une évaluation environnementale de portée générale en vue du projet d’expansion du poste de transformation (PT) existant de Wawa, qui est situé juste au nord-est du lac Anjigami, à environ 20 km à l’est de la municipalité de Wawa. Ce projet est nécessaire pour relier la nouvelle ligne d’interconnexion Est-Ouest de la société NextBridge Infrastructure (NextBridge) au PT de Wawa.

Dans le cadre de ce projet d’expansion, Hydro One propose de mener les travaux suivants : • Installation de nouveaux équipements électriques, tels que disjoncteurs et sectionneurs; • Raccordement de la nouvelle ligne projetée de Nextbridge au poste de transformation et reconfiguration des connexions de ligne existantes; • Installation d’un nouveau bâtiment relais, qui abriterait des appareils électroniques cruciaux pour la sûreté, la fiabilité et la sécurité du réseau d’électricité.

Pour ces travaux, le PT de Wawa devra être agrandi sur une zone d’environ un demi-hectare (voir la carte ci-contre).

Exigences à remplir pour l’autorisation du projet Le projet d’expansion du PT de Wawa est assujetti à l’ « Évaluation environnementale de portée générale relative aux petites installations de transport d’électricité » (Hydro One, 2016), conformément à la Loi sur les évaluations environnementales. Ce document établit un processus d’évaluation rationalisé qui se révèle efficace en ce qu’il garantit la mise en place de mesures d’atténuation ou de protection environnementale pour les petits projets de transport dont les effets sur l’environnement sont prévisibles et gérables. Le processus d’évaluation environnementale de portée générale prévoit un processus d’examen préalable, qui pourrait s’appliquer à ce projet. Par ailleurs, le nouveau projet de ligne d’interconnexion Est-Ouest de NextBridge et tous les travaux qui y sont associés, y compris le projet d’expansion du PT de Wawa, doivent aussi être approuvés par la Commission de l’énergie de l’Ontario (CEO). Sous réserve de l’achèvement de l’évaluation environnementale de portée générale et de l’autorisation du projet par la CEO, les travaux d’expansion pourraient débuter vers la mi-2018, la date d’entrée en exploitation du projet étant prévue pour décembre 2020.
