What a wonderful story.

“The other day someone stopped me and asked ‘what the heck, Deb you having a mid-life crisis?" "No, it’s not a mid-life crisis; I’m soon to be 66,” she quips. “I always rode when I was a kid. I rode with

my cousins and then you get married and life gets in the way. Then my daughter Kristi got a 1200 Harley Davidson about two years ago. It’s a beauty, and all the yearning and everything came right back.” Deb asks her daughter that if she got a bike, if they could ride together. And she says sure of course we’ll do

that.

“I’ve been saving money, and then my sister got an inheritance and shared it with myself and my other sister. Then I saw the Can-Am Spyder. Ah man, look at this! I don’t have any strength in my left leg so I knew I couldn’t ride a motorcycle any more, couldn’t hold it up.” Then the search began. It took her some time to locate a Spyder, and finally found a dealer in Barrie. “So I had to go to Barrie. I didn’t have a license, but the price was right. Guess who rode the bike home. My daughter rode it home, not me…the day we came home from Barrie. It was terrible, torrential rain and thunder and lightning, the worst rain storm of the season. I finally got home and two weeks later I got my M1 license.”

And now the fun begins.

“When in Barrie, I bought

a Harley Davidson helmet and boots. I got my boots and helmet on, I got the key, I’m sitting on it. I put it in neutral, turned the key and it scared the bejesus out of me – the Harley rumble. It scares me every time I ride, just to be aware. Kristi told me when she took her course, there were two things, ‘one of them is you are invisible, and the second one is everyone is going to try to kill you.' Well, on the Spyder, I’m very visible. And I’m in the lane like everybody else. Don’t need to worry about balancing. “I love it! I absolutely Love it!”

You can’t get any better than that. It has storage in front and it’s a two-up. I have a standard drive. I love it, absolutely love it.”

Article and Photos by Lynn Cregheur Manitouwadge was really busing this weekend. The Manitouwadge Economic Development Committee revved up for their 2nd

Annual ATV Poker Run event.

Over 80 participants from Winnipeg to Manitouwadge, North of Highway 11, Longlac/ Geraldton, Michigan, yes, even Wawa. What a rush!

Half of the participants were Manitouwadgians.

The excursion started at 9 a.m. to be followed by a super lunch at the Community Centre. Some came back, yes, by all means, flat tires.

It is all part of the game.

They had the perfect dusty day for the event. They left for the second part of the run after lunch to return to an awesome, well deserved, hot meal. After a shower and rest, they came back to the Our Lady of Lourdes Church Hall for their meals and handing over their travel card that had to be signed in to show that they had touched base with all of the special section of the run, then they were handed over playing cards. During the evening, poker hands were drawn and the highest hand won.

Great prizes were awarded.

The winners were: Bruce Poulin of Manitouwadge with $3000, Diane Jackson of Manitouwadge with $2000, and finally, from Michigan, John Gross with $1000. This was all done by the hard work of 40 volunteers. Great job.

A Pictoral Article & Photos by Tammie Hache bthache@yahoo.ca Hello again! :) I don't have a whole lot of news to report on so I will post a few extra photos this week of birds I've seen in the yard recently. Hopefully things will pick up a little in the coming weeks when the birds (again, HOPEfully!) bring more of their young around to the yard.

I am happy to report that I have recently seen a female Eastern Bluebird in my neighbourhood and this evening, they are busily flying around near & sometimes through my yard, catching insects.

They are plainly feeding a family and I'm very excited to know that it's so close by! It's been great fun watching them swoop up, over & through the neighbourhood, sometimes dropping right down onto a lawn to grab a bug, then flying back up to a rooftop or top of a light post. Great aerodynamics! I might get to see some baby Bluebirds flying around yet.

The quiet time of year in the backyard continues. All I see at my couple of small feeders are a few Purple Finches, sometimes the Chickadee family and a couple of Goldfinches. A couple of Evening Grosbeaks might come through .... I could hear them earlier today but I've yet to see a baby Evening Grosbeak this season.

I also have a single female Downy Woodpecker coming around but still no Hairy Woodpeckers. They seem to have left my neighbourhood completely and that makes me sad. On the plus side, a few pairs of Northern Flickers nested in my area and I can still hear them.

The Tree Swallows seem to have mostly moved on now after the big fledge 2 weeks ago. I don't hear them now and they are no longer fighting and bickering over the bird house. Maybe they were just showing the youngsters where to go next year, I don't know. It was behaviour I have never seen before anyway.

Mayor Rody opened the meeting by praising everyone involved in the 3rd annual Music Festival held last week.

It was another resounding success and much thanks goes out to our amazing volunteers.

In 2013 the Federal Government ceased its investment in the Algoma Central passenger train service giving access to many remote areas between Sault Ste Marie and Hearst. A Working Group has been formed comprised of affected stakeholders, chaired

by Chief Jason Gauthier of Missanabie Cree First Nation to create a not-for-profit corporation to ensure the continued investment of the Federal Government (Transport Canada). Studies have concluded that the Algoma passenger train service supports $38-$48 million in direct and indirect economic impact, 170220 direct and indirect jobs and $5.12-$6.45 million in tax generation.

Mask-wa Oo-ta-ban (The Bear Train) is an initiative of the Missanabie Cree First Nation and the Algoma Passenger Train Working Group to reestablish and optimize the Algoma passenger train service to support the social, economic, employment and remote access needs of the First Nations, communities, residents, businesses and socio-economic stakeholders of the Algoma passenger train corridor, an initiative that follows and supports the mission of Transport Canada.

At this night's meeting Council supported the efforts of the Working Group and requests that the Government of Canada recognize the mission of Transport Canada and support immediate resumption of the Algoma passenger train services by: • requiring and compensating CN Rail to immediately resume scheduled service of the Algoma passenger train to support the social, economic, employment and remote access needs of the First Nations, communities, residents, businesses and socio-economic stakeholders of the Algoma passenger train corridor.

• supporting the Missanabie Cree First Nation and Algoma Passenger Train Working Group in their cooperative development of Mask-wa Oo-taban, the Bear Train, to assume responsibility for, and optimize, long-term operations of the Algoma passenger train so the economic, employment, remote access and other public interests and values of the Algoma passenger train can be optimized and maximized.

Many northern patients travel outside their communities to receive specialized health care services or lifesaving treatment which often require additional

costs associated with accommodations and food, and do not qualify to receive any financial assistance under the current grant stipulations. Council resolved to urge the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care to consider amending the qualifying criteria for the Northern Travel Grant to cover trips requiring extended stays and additional costs associated with accommodations and meals under special circumstances thus ensuring fair and equitable reimbursement for all Ontario residents who must travel outside their community for special health care services.

The Province of Ontario recently voted to support the City of Waukesha, Wisconsin's application to divert over 31 million litres of water each day to the City of Waukesha.

Municipalities, First Nations, community groups, special interest groups and individuals have expressed grave concern regarding the City of Waukesha, Wisconsin's plan and oppose the project. The Great Lakes are the key to the sustainability of not only our water supply but it is essential to prosperity in agriculture, industry, power generation, recreation and tourism, and transportation of goods and resources. Council resolved to request the Province of Ontario to reconsider its support for the Waukesha Great Lake Water Diversion Project and protect one of North America's precious freshwater bodies.

Council approved the request of Barbara Andersen and authorizes the installation of a columbarium niche at Woodland Cemetery, conditional to the number of internments in the subject plot be limited to four, and the dimensions of the monument are within the parameters as stated in the current bylaw.

One of the venues to host the recent Music Festival had to cancel and the organizers of the Festival secured the Community Centre as a third venue for the event. The organizers requested the waiver or reduction of the rental fees for this facility to which the town staff recommended an increase in the bar sharing revenue rather than a rental fee reduction.

Council authorized the municipality to provide bar sharing revenue with the Wawa Music Festival at a rate of $0.25 per drink.

Council approved for payment the list of accounts for June in the total amount of $804,576.98.

Council has set aside funds for the Community Development Project Fund and the Community Development Committee has established evaluation criteria to evaluate proposals and make recommendations on the disbursements of the funds. Council accepted the following recommendations: Royal Canadian

INSPECTION Inspection of Approved Aerial Herbicide Spraying Northshore Forest The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invites you to inspect the MNRF-approved aerial herbicide spray project(s). As part of our ongoing efforts to regenerate and protect Ontario’s forests, selected stands on the Northshore Forest (see map) will be sprayed with herbicide to control competing vegetation, starting on or about August 1, 2016. The herbicide VisionMax (PCP) registration # 27736 will be used.

The approved project description and project plan for the aerial herbicide project is available for public inspection at the Northshore Forest Inc. Office and on the MNRF public website at ontario.ca/forestplans beginning August 1, 2016 until March 31, 2017 when the annual work schedule expires. Ontario Government Information Centres at Sault Ste. Marie District, Sudbury District, and Blind River Field MNRF Offices provide access to the Internet.

Interested and affected persons and organizations can arrange an appointment with MNRF staff at the MNRF District or Field Office to discuss the aerial herbicide project.

Council previously approved a funding application to the Northern Investment Readiness Program (NCIR) to assist in the costs of developing a Wawa and White River Housing Need and Demand Study. This funding support will assist the two communities to determine the current housing situation in the towns, determine current vacancies, stock and housing inventory for future housing demand that is forecasted as a result of the expansion of the forestry and mining sectors in the region, particularly the anticipated start-up of Prodigy Gold Mine, continued success of Rentech (Wawa) and White River Forestry, and potential mining developments in the region including Red Pine Gold operations in Wawa, and both Wesdome and Richmont Mines expansion of operations in 2016/17. Council approved the funding application to the NCIR in the amount of $2,127 to assist in the costs of developing a Wawa and White River Housing Need and Demand Study, and overruns for the

study will be the responsibility of the Municipality of Wawa.

To the Columbia Restaurant's previous request for a seasonal shutdown rebate of sewer and water charges, Council agreed to a sewer and water rebate equal to 65% of the total charges for July to December 31, 2016.

Protect Your Food From Harmful AGEs As barbeque season has started, it’s time to talk about AGEs or “Advanced Glycation End Products”. While this term may be new for some, many will be familiar with one of the sources of AGEs: meat that is browned or charred from cooking with a dry method (i.e. grilling, roasting, and broiling) at a high temperature.

AGEs are naturally formed inside the body when protein or fats combine with sugars.

AGEs damage body cells and can cause them to age prematurely. AGE production can be increased in chronic diseases, like diabetes.

As mentioned above, AGEs are also found in certain foods. Eating too many AGEs is harmful, because they can build up in the body and can cause inflammation, which can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease, to name a few.

Foods that are known to contain high amounts of AGEs include meats that have been cooked at a high temperature (especially red meat), and foods that are high in sugar, or processed and

prepackaged.

Most people already know that sugary and processed foods should be limited. On top of this, to lower your consumption of AGEs, you should also think about making some changes to how you cook your meat. Anytime there is browning, or charring to the meat, AGEs are being formed.

Consider grilling meat less often, and when you do, use an acid-based marinade that contains lemon or other citrus fruit juices, or vinegar.

Acid can reduce the amount of AGEs that are formed.

To prevent the browning or charring when cooking food not only on the grill, but also in a frying pan or in the oven, cook at a lower temperature for a longer time. Use moist heat methods more often; you can braise meat in liquid, make a soup or stew, or use a slow cooker.

Don't Look Now

There doesn’t seem to be anywhere safe. Or so it seems at a glance. People are being “knocked off ” at an apparent frantic rate. Perhaps it’s a good idea; we are in the process of overpopulating ourselves to the point of extinction. As cold-blooded as it sounds maybe it’s all a symptom of our need to remodel the world partly just to accommodate the pressure of so many people. From a population of just over two billion to over eight billion just since the end of World War II in 1945.

I really don’t suppose that’s the only problem today. After all, we’ve improved food production to the point that we can easily feed the world today. The problem is distribution. Geography, politics and sheer human cussedness keeps half the world hungry.

And then there’s that greatest evil of all, religion! More blood has been spilled over religion than any other cause on earth. You think the animosity of Muslims towards Christians is new? Christians and Muslims have been at war for over a thousand years.

And we started it! One of the Popes of old said, “Take back Jerusalem!” Ever since, we have been trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to do just that.

Getting back on the subject at hand, it isn’t too surprising that things are going poorly in the world. Politics is second only to religion as a cause for turmoil. Countries that we have thought for years to be stable and mostly above the petty problems of dissent and revolution appear to be going to pieces right before our eyes.

Countries like Great Britain suddenly pulling out of the European Union (EU) in a surprise move that has left them fighting among themselves. All of this short

months after Scotland elected to stay as part of Great Britain by a narrow margin. Now, of course, they want to stay in the EU and to hell with England.

The final part of the disintegration of “Not So Great Britain” will be Northern Ireland who also wants to stay in the EU. They are more likely to rejoin the main part of Ireland (Eire) in an action that has been sought by the south for most of a century.

That should about finish off the British Empire.

Maybe it’s something basically wrong with the idea of Democratic Capitalism.

The two words just don’t fit together. Something is wrong with it. Communism doesn’t work either.

What we need is a benevolent dictatorship. Problem is, keeping a dictator benevolent.

I am a little surprised at developments among our friends to the south. The United South has always been a “bastion of democracy”. They said so themselves. Now we have Donald wanting to build fences to keep any undesirables out such as Muslims and others, to be determined as he goes.

Then there are his slurs and snide remarks about blacks and the veiled promises to “do something about them”. Yeah!

That’s democracy!

Hilary is being made to appear just a little untrustworthy, and not just by Donald. About the best the Americans can do is selecting the one that appears to be least dangerous.

I think I’ll separate from the world. Just close my eyes and don’t look anymore.

Iris Place Relocating Article by Joan Brooks “Iris Place may be moving,” says Deb Lessard, a long time Caregiver, since 1998, of those living with mental health issues. “As far as I know we have to move by the end of August. Our contract for rent is up the end of August. The landlord has put the building up for sale”.

“It’s expensive for us to be here. The cost of power is terrible. As time goes on the money isn’t matching the cost of living. We need another place. A one bedroom home

would be ideal. Although the kitchen is not a part of my mandate with Mental Health and Addictions, it’s extremely important. It’s become as much a part of Iris Place as anything else. Some days I’m more in need of a kitchen than anything else. So the kitchen is really an essential part."

Rooster Not All He's Cooked Up To Be Here is an intriguing item I found pinned on the village bulletin board this morning: “Seeking,” the note importunes, 'stud rooster service for young, healthy pullets.

I'll tell you what I've got, my man. I've got a question for you. The question is: do you have any idea what you're letting yourself in for?

Oh, I know. You think you're a connoisseur of poultry just because you've got a few clucketty hens scratching and pecking around your yard. But roosters? They're a different kettle of, er, feathers.

I speak as a veritable dean of matters roosterian. Indeed, you will find on my office wall an official document identifying me as COCK OF THE WALK. Nothing to do with blue movies, madame. I earned that title by presiding as Chief Magistrate of the Rooster Crowing Contest at the Salt Spring Fall Fair. It's a function I intend to repeat this year (September 17 and 18 Island Farmers' Institute. Everyone welcome.)

It goes without saying I know a thing or two about Gallus gallus.

The most overpowering fact I know about roosters: they're loud. Overpowering fact number two: they're early risers. Those are two very good reasons to re-think any desire to allow one on your property.

But why 'roosters'? Because 'roosting' is what they do second best. They guard their hen harems by finding a vantage point – a roost usu-

ally three to five feet above the nesting area. This allows them to keep one eye on the girls and the other peeled for any incoming rooster competition.

That is the other thing I know about roosters: they're testosterone-heavy which makes them aggressively territorial.

And polygamous. My, are they polygamous.

There's a story of a farmer who sent away for a 'service rooster'. When the box came from Fed Ex it practically jumped out of the driver's arms. A White Crested Black Poland rooster exploded out of the box and stormed into the farmyard. It swarmed the first hen it came to and ravished it on the spot. Then it leapt on the next one. And the next. Before the afternoon was out the rooster had serviced the entire flock of 36 pullets, some of them twice.

Not only that, the barn cat was up a maple tree, Rover was whimpering in his doghouse and even the cattle looked nervous.

The farmer finally tracked the rooster down. He found it spread-eagled on the manure pile, feathers disheveled, comb unkempt, tongue hanging out of his beak. Overhead, a flock of vultures was descending in slow motion rotation.

“You fool bird!” the farmer yelled at the carcass. “I paid over a hundred dollars for you and you worked yourself to death in one day! Why, you haven't got the brains of a jackass!”

The rooster opened one eye, pointed a bedraggled wing at the nearest circling buzzard and whispered “Shhhh.”

The "Jaws' Mystery Summer was here, and it was hot. So people were flocking to Sandy Beach on Lake Superior to soak up some sun and go for a nice cold dip in the water on Saturday, July 18, 2015. This was when it all began...

A group of about twenty teenagers were having a party that started in late afternoon, and was just getting warmed up by early evening. That discouraged others from staying, and so it wasn't long before they had the beach all to themselves. There was lots of activity, what with them coming in and out of the water, playing volley ball, eating, smoking whatever, and drinking of course.

About 7 o'clock someone got a small campfire going to do hot dogs. Others had brought the condiments, potato chips, pop, and most importantly - more beer and 'medicinal' drugs! The evening revved up when someone else got music going. A couple of the teenagers had already passed out, while others were 'mellowed' out. It went on until just after midnight. It was finally broken up when some of the parents arrived on the scene. They began rounding up the party goers. One car was left that had brought four of them. One of the girls, Rita, realized that their driver, Graydon, was not around to drive them home. She became panicky as she began calling out for him.

She ran down to the beach from the parking lot where the car was parked, calling his name. She began running up and down the beach, with still no sign of him.

She became frantic.

The others got involved too, combing the dunes, as well as the shoreline, with no luck. One of the parents suggested that it was too dark to do anything that night. They should all go home, and start fresh in the morning.

Maybe he left with someone else as he knew he was not capable to drive his own car, one of the parents suggested. That was shot down by the teenagers. One of the other parents called 911.

Two other parents waited for the police to get there. That took about half an hour. The officer, Cpl. Rick Finn, began questioning them, to get an idea what he was up against.

He agreed with the parents that it was no good trying to find him that night, in the dark. He put in a call to the canine unit, and the Search and Rescue squad, to be there for first thing Sunday morning.

Rita, his girlfriend, was distraught and hysterical. She didn't want to leave, but was being urged do go by both Finn and the parents.

Just then one of the other teens piped up: “You know, I think that I remember Graydon saying he was going to walk down the beach to the camp there to get more driftwood that might have washed up on shore, to have for the fire. But that was a lot earlier today – maybe seven or so.”

Another teenager then piped up: “Yeah, I remember him saying he was going to go in for a quick swim and then get more wood for the fire.” Rita then added her thoughts. “You know, now that I think about it, I don't remember seeing him since about that time too. I was in a good place by

then, and wasn't paying attention to what was happening. I should have noticed that he was gone.

It's all my fault.” She began to sob and shake uncontrollably. One of the parents went over to console her, and finally getting her to compose herself.

Finn realized it was likely the best therapy for her to feel like she was doing something to find him, so he said to her: “Well, then, Rita, you come with me.

You other three might as well come too. If we don't find him, I will drive you home in my cruiser. The rest of you can go now. I will let you know what we find out in the morning. We'll be here bright and early. That's only a few hours away now. So don't worry. I am sure he will show up.” The remaining parents were not happy about this, but understood his thinking. He obviously understood kids better than they did, so with that, they broke up, going their separate ways. The officer and his 'posse' began heading down the beach, with his flashlight casting a beam of light around as they scoured the bushes and beach.

One of the boys commented that it reminded him of Luke Skywalker's green laser weapon from 'Star Wars'. There were a couple of groans, but no one said anything to him. They were too intent on finding Graydon. They came upon the camp. It was all in darkness. Finn knocked on the door, but got no answer. There was no vehicle in the driveway either. It was obvious that no one was home. They looked around the building and surrounding area for signs. There were none.

No one had been around here in days. They worked their back to the parking lot. Despite their reluctance to leave, he was finally able to get them to understand that they could do no more that night. So they got in his cruiser and he drove them home.

On Sunday morning at six o'clock it was really foggy on Sandy Beach where everyone had gathered again. Finn was surprised to see them there so early.

But he knew that he couldn't keep them away. It was an eerie scene, with the quietness, the fog and accompanying fog horn occasionally breaking the stillness, and the gentle lapping of the water on the shore.

The canine unit leader, Cpl Stewart Sharkton, brought his dog out of the van to get him primed for the scent that he was to track down. He commented to everyone, “I am going to take him on a quick scouting of the area, just to get him familiar with the layout. I promise to not get lost in this fog. I hope it soon lifts.

But in the meantime, everybody just stay put.” The dog, Finder, knew it was time to go to work, and immediately began sniffing the sand. They headed down the beach, going in the opposite direction from that camp that the others had checked out last night.

He had not gone thirty feet when he disappeared from view.

Spooky, one of the teenage boys whispered. Less than a minute later, they heard Finder barking.

Sharkton called out for Finn to come to him. The rest of them followed too.

When Finn got there, he

looked down to where the dog was sitting. He uttered, “Oh, my God!” It was a severed arm that Sharkton had pulled out of the water. He then realized the 'civilians' were gathering around too.

He tried to move them away, but it was too late. They all saw the grizzly sight and gasped as they covered their mouths. A couple of the teenagers threw up.

Sharkton apologized: “I am sorry you had to see this. Does it look like it might be from your friend?”

Rita confirmed it for them all.

In a weak whisper she said, “Yes, that's him. That tattoo on his arm. He just had that done just last month as a graduation gift for himself...” She paused and took a deep breath before adding: “And me.” At that point she collapsed onto the sand.

They rushed over to revive her.

Meanwhile, one of the parents asked an obvious question. “Did you find the rest of the body?”

Sharkton answered. “No, we just came upon this now. We are going to continue our search ahead now. You can take care of things here, right, Laramie?”

He assured him that he could do that, but felt that Gravel had made a dig about his competency to control a crowd. He let it pass, though. The search is the focus right now, he reminded himself.

The fog started to burn off, and by the time Sharkton got to the end of the beach where the rocks took over, it had cleared away altogether. That was good, too, as he might not have noticed the rest of the body washed up on the rocks. He clambered over them until he got to the battered, bloody, scratched body of Graydon. He pulled him off the rocks and laid what was left of the body on the sand. He called Laramie to come over, but leave the others behind. To his relief, they obeyed him.

The two of them had a conversation about the condition of the body. Both were thinking it, but it was Finn who said it out loud: “This looks like a shark attack. Look at those serrations of his severed arm. That is something that even smashing up against rocks could never do. But we don't have sharks in Lake Superior. Bizarre, huh?”

Sharkton agreed, but concluded, “Yeah, you're right. But it's not for us to say. Let the coroner come up with that one. Get a blanket from my van to wrap the body in. We don't want those folks seeing this part as well. Bad enough they saw the arm. I knew it was a bad idea for civilians to be on this type of search.”

Finn ignored the jab. “Okay, I'll get these folks moved back to the parking lot.” They were pretty angry about it, but reluctantly headed back as requested. When they asked about what happened to Graydon, he just said it was too soon to know for sure. He grabbed the blanket and went back to where Sharkton was waiting. They got the body wrapped and taken away.

Word spread around town quickly, of course, about his gruesome death. The entire beach area was cordoned off for the rest of the week. But it was re-opened on the following weekend.

It had continued being scorching hot all week and still was that way on Saturday, July 25th. Lots of people came down to get relief from the heat. A few hardy souls ventured out into the cold water, despite the stories, and warnings.

Then about three o'clock in the afternoon, it happened! A female swimmer in her mid twenties headed out further from

shore. Her friend, Diana, knew Alicia was a strong swimmer, so wasn't concerned that she might get carried out by the undertow.

Diana was sitting in a beach chair with her wide brimmed hat and sunglasses, reading a book. She kept looking up every once in a while to check on Alicia. On this particular look, she did a double take. She took off her sunglasses, and stood up. She couldn't be sure what she was really seeing.

About twenty feet behind Alicia was an object that reminded her of a shark fin. 'Jaws!' Naah, she uttered. It must just be an old tree branch or something like that. Then it disappeared below the water. She blinked her eyes several times, just to be sure she saw it right. “No, it just bobbed below the surface with that wave. It will pop up again in a moment”she thought to herself. It did. The fin, and the entire body of a twenty foot tiger shark bolted out of the water, and landed on her body.

That forced her head up, right into the jaws of that shark. She let out a blood-curdling scream before she disappeared under the water. Then Sheila saw the pool of blood amassing on the water.

There was no more sign of the shark for the moment. Then a few seconds later it re-appeared, leaping out of the water once more, this time holding a leg in it's mouth. It shook it's head back and forth as it hit the water, and slowly disappeared again, the fin being the last to go under. By now there was lots of people gathering along the shore, staring out at the horrific scene out in the water.

Pandemonium set in as horror and disbelief took over. 'SHARK'!

People began mulling around, not sure what to do. Eventually a police boat came out and got onto the lake looking for Alicia and the shark. But they came back empty handed. There was shock that set in as that news spread about the beach and into town.

One of the local commercial fishermen went out on the lake that evening, to see what he could find, just like in the movie 'Jaws'.

He came back okay, but he never spotted any shark, or found any trace of her body. In fact Alicia's body was never recovered.

Over the next few days it became a real sensation. Police, shark experts, marine biologists, from both the federal and provincial governments, fishermen, locals, the media, etc. all became involved, talking about the impossibility of a shark in these waters. One shark expert from Sea World explained that it is known that sharks can adapt to live in both sea and freshwater, just as any other species does all the time.

One environmentalist suggested global warming and climate change was to blame, which was altering their usual movements, and moving further north as the oceans warmed up. Anyway, lots of debate raged over this occurrence..

On Wednesday, July 22nd there was a photo posted on various social media sites that showed what appeared to be a shark fin bobbing in the water at the mouth of the Michipicoten River. In front of that was a 16' cedar strip boat with a man standing up in the rear by the motor, pointing to the fin.

Underneath was the headline: Come to Wawa to see where the first ever shark sighting on Lake Superior occurred. Then come back to Wawa's exclusive restaurant for Shark Fin Soup, a real delicacy. Contact Finnegan

On Thursday morning of July 30, 2015, his body was found washed up on the sandbar at the mouth of the river. His throat had been slashed with a jagged object – knife or shark teeth?

The autopsy report was inconclusive, the media reported. Of course they had to sensationalize it – murder by a human, or murder by shark? Those were the headlines that grabbed peoples' attention. Had someone resented these tragedies being exploited so soon after the deadly attacks, and murdered him? Or those against killing sharks for their fins to make soup.? Or had he fallen into the water from his boat, and the shark killed him, but not tearing him apart like the other 2 victims?

In the evening his boat was found washed up on a sandy reef a few kilometers south of where his body had been found. There was a huge hole along one side. It was rumoured that it was likely from a shark attack, although the authorities tried to downplay that fear by suggesting it could have been caused by smashing into the rocky shore before finally getting beached on the sand. That was all part of the debate, and it became the talk of the town for the rest of the summer. It was never resolved, and by the fall it became a cold case.

No more shark sightings were reported on Lake Superior until Saturday, July 16th, 2016, exactly one year since the first occurrence. But this time there were 2 sharks spotted out in Michipicoten Bay. There were lots of comments about a mass migration to the area, despite it only being two. Then someone suggested that maybe it was a pair that came here to mate, and then we would have who knows how many babies to watch out for later on. The rumour mill went into overdrive again. It hit its' peak when it was reported that Walter Sharkey, a well known local fisherman who spent lots of time out on the Lake, had not returned from a day of fishing last Saturday, the 16th. His wife reported him missing on Monday, July 18th, 2016. A search party headed out to look for him. All they found was his small aluminum boat turned upside down on the rocks, about five km down the coast from the mouth of the river. There was no sign of him, but there was what appeared to be dried blood on the side of the boat, and a big dent in the aluminum. No one could be sure if it was from a shark attack, or just from being battered on the rocks.

As of today, Wednesday, July 20, 2016, he is still missing and presumed dead. Someone pointed out on Facebook that these attacks were tied at 2-2: two victims-two shark sightings.

Someone added 2 boats, but a total of 4 deaths since last year, making it Sharks 0, Humans 4.

Where do folks come up with these comments?

It's odd, though that no other sightings of sharks has occurred – just that one day. It's a real mystery. Will there be more this year, or is that it? It's just a matter of time most folks fear. We'll see. ... Jerry Witt, reporter for The Algoma News Review.
