Last Monday the call came in from Brian Lachine that vandals had defaced our main street. Toppled over flower boxes, kicked over trash cans, man hole covers removed.

"We live in a beautiful place.

These flower boxes are planted every year by hard working volunteers and watered

by Municipal staff. We know you are proud of this town, so let's keep working together maintaining Wawa's beauty."

After flooding all social media stream, Lachine urges anyone who knows anything to contact the local OPP Station.

On Friday, a wonderful post on Facebook by Robin

Marshall Davidson outlining how much locals love their little town and took this opportunity to teach their children the value of the place they call "home".

About 24000 walkers took part in this event and walked 50km, 40km or 30 km a day and there were many blisters to pricked at the Red Cross station.

News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP

If I were a betting man, I would bet dollars to donuts that when Doug Ford was growing up, one of his favourite TV shows was Happy Days. Remember Richie Cunningham, his family, teenage friends and, of course, The Fonz? For those too young to remember, Happy Days was a weekly sitcom throwback to the good old days of the 1950s and 60s. It was an attempt to depict a wistful look back at free and fun-loving days of adolescence and innocence. I am conjecturing that Happy Days was one of Ford’s favourite shows because he seems to have a thing for nostalgia. I say this because of his recent determination to drag Ontario backwards in time.

The concerning thing is that I’m not sure Ford understands that the Happy Days show wasn’t realistic. It was based on a time when employment was high, people had steady jobs for a lifetime in a whitebread, melting pot world in which minorities were not visible or respected. When Happy Days aired it was meant to be entertainment. It was just as make-believe as Ford’s perception of what is real and important today in Ontario. Under Ford we are going back to the ‘happy days’ in which politics was known for its backroom deals and catering to the wishes of party insiders and lobbyists.

Conservatives have resorted to using blatantly divisive thinking and policies.

This week in the Legislature Andrea Horwath criticized the Minister of Public Safety and Corrections for suggesting that living in the Jane and Finch community in Toronto is sufficient justification to warrant the practice of carding. While carding continues on Ontario’s streets, the Ford PCs continue to respond to questions with justifications that stigmatize predominantly Black communities as unsafe and saying a bullet-proof vest is necessary to visit them.

Clearly the Ford government approves of the discriminatory and unconstitutional practice of carding. Andrea asked the minister whether he plans to allow even more carding to take place or do the right thing which is to prohibit the practice once and for all. In response the Minister willfully stigmatized an entire community by using outrageous stereotypes to describe the community.

The racist comments served only to offend Ontarians and promote attitudes of intolerance and divisiveness.

The Conservatives also dragged Ontario back in time in terms of education this week. They announced their decision to scrap the updated sexual health curriculum and drag Ontario back to 1998.

This outdated curriculum ignores significant changes that our society has experi-

enced since that time. This means Ontario’s young people will no longer be taught about cyberbullying, consent, or healthy relationships – including same-sex marriage, which was legalized after the curriculum was written.

When the fallout first started, Education Minister Lisa Thompson tried to calm the waters during question period saying that some updated sex ed topics would be kept in place. However, the Conservatives overruled her statement later that same day, stating unequivocally that teachers will be forced to use a health curriculum that was written before the existence of social media, smart phones, or legal same-sex marriage.

This step backwards in time is obviously not about doing what’s right for students, or about listening to parents. It’s about doing favours for social conservatives like Charles McVety and Tanya Granic Allen. Doug Ford is being driven by whatever far-right radical social conservatives want him to do, and the deals he made with them before the election - just like the nudge-nudge, wink-wink politics back in the ‘good old days’.

In last week’s column I mentioned that the Ford Conservatives are also undoing the progress we have made in tackling environmental issues such as greenhouse gasses with the cap-and trade program. Scrapping all clean-air and climate change initiatives will hurt Ontario. Not only is the cancelation of cap-andtrade going to have a devastating effect on our environment, but it will also have the unintended consequence of cutting funds specifically earmarked for the Ontario school renovation program among other things. The province has a $15 billion repair backlog on the books to address the needs of 4,900 publicly funded schools.

Some of the money needed for this would have come from the proceeds of the cap-and-trade program. So where does Ford plan on finding the money to tend to the needs of our crumbling schools?

Ontario needs real leadership; not someone who wants to govern in a Happy Days fantasy. New Democrats have a real vision for an Ontario where more people can build their best life. We are committed to continuing to fight to improve the services that everyday families count on.

Greyhound Route Cancellations Highlight Growing Public Transportation Gap

When Greyhound abruptly cancelled several crucial bus routes in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwestern Ontario, and rural British Columbia last week it left a gaping hole in public transportation options for many small communities.

In some ways the news is not surprising since public transportation has been in decline in Canada for decades and Greyhound’s recent decision is just the latest in a string of developments that have created a crisis for people living outside of urban centres.

While the government may be able to claim it is investing in public transport, that money largely flows to projects in vote-rich cities. Now, Greyhound’s decision may force them to finally address rural problems too.

In the short-term, New Democrats are calling for a federal funding plan that ensures there is no interruption or reduction in bus service for affected communities. They are asking the government to team up with the premiers of affected provinces and leaders of affected municipalities to quickly form that plan. But apart from this immediate need, the party is renewing the call for the implementation of a

National Transit Strategy to expand transport services and ensure that every Canadian has access to adequate, safe and affordable transportation.

Canadians who rely on bus services as their sole means of transportation will be cut off in many crucial ways. People who travel for employment, health care, education, along with other critical public services, or even access to family will all be affected. This gap will also pose risks to the safety of these travellers as people turn to less safe modes of transportation such as informal ride sharing or hitch-hiking.

Indigenous communities are concerned they will be disproportionately affected by the loss of bus routes. They point to the lack of bus service along the Highway of Tears that was seen as a contributing factor to the murders and missing person status of many vulnerable women who had no other option than to hitchhike along that route.

In addition to that, there are concerns about basic services for these communities. The Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs reminded the government that many people from Indigenous communities travel great distanc-

es by bus to receive adequate health care. He is wondering how that will be delivered now.

At the moment, the federal government seems to be passing the buck to the provinces.

Transport Canada issued a statement in which it said “there are no federal government funding programs that would provide an operational subsidy for private intercity bus carriers.” They went on to suggest the responsibility lies with the province despite the fact the federal government is clearly responsible for interprovincial transportation.

In the meantime there is transportation crisis in a country where the national identity was formed, in part, by a national railway that was a unifying project and source of pride. Without getting too romantic, it can still be said that transportation links remain as important to Canada as they were when our country was founded.

Canadians’ ability to travel is essential for strong economies and healthy communities. That means ensuring communities across Canada have access to basic transportation services is undeniably in the national interest.

Youth Enterprise Camp Camp entreprise jeunesse For a twelfth consecutive summer, business-minded youth had their place to shine. The Youth Enterprise Camp was run in Wawa from July 9th to 13th 2018 at Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre.

The camp introduces youth ages 9-13 to the values, attitudes, qualities and skills needed to be successful in today’s economy.

High-energy games, activities and workshops challenge every participant to discover their entrepreneurial selves.

Campers will develop entrepreneurial and financial awareness, confidence, teamwork and communication skills.

• A summer camp unlike any other camp where campers learn to be their own boss.

• Campers start up, run and close down their own business in one day.

• They learn about entrepreneurship, and enjoy summer camp fun games and activities at the same time.

• Make friends and money at the same time!

Youth enterprise camp plants the entrepreneurial seed in our youth and teens in a fun exciting summer camp atmosphere.

Six campers ran their own “Business for a Day” on Friday, July 13 in front of the Post Office. They all had a great time even though the weather wasn’t the best for the customers to be out and about. However all the teams were able to sell most of their creations, paid back their loans and brought the rest of the money home. They all had plans on how to invest their earnings.

Cependant, toutes les équipes ont pu vendre la plupart de leurs créations, rembourser leurs prêts et ramener le reste de l'argent à la maison. Ils avaient tous des plans sur la façon d'investir leurs gains.

We Have Angels Always Watching Us Article by Ian Van Der Swan, Captain of the Batchewana Fire & Rescue, Photos provided by Mr. Jonathan Brooks 19 July 2018 7:44 PM At the lower half of Montreal River Hill on the Trans Canada Highway just North of Twilight Road on Lake Superior a lone younger female tractor-trailer operator suddenly found her world upside down and in complete turmoil.

The operator managed to survive the one hundred foot long connection to the South bound guard rail and then the jolting laws of physics as her truck trailer went turned upside down and went into the deep ravine. Leaving her home on the road completely upside down and only being prevented from falling by the steel mangled guard rail.

Seconds seemed like hours as she tried to get a grip on what just happened. The woman was in the centre of the tractor portion of the trailer, surrounded entirely by twisted cab components and

only could barely reach out of her space with a hand.

Jonathan Brooks, a safety environment officer for Andritz Hydro happened to be upon the scene within minutes of the terrible event and immediately reached out to the only human part he could connect with, a human moving hand. He told her everything is going to be ok as he fought to control his internal frustration of being a first responder and not being able to access her. Due to the inability of being able to assess her whole person, he had to just pray that everything was ok. After sizing up everything at the scene, he then immediately reached out to 911 and started the life saving response.

Batchawana Fire & Rescue personal were all in area, caring on with Summer activities of being on the water, enjoying a nice meal and running a business. The tones of a alarm hit the air waves and the small volunteer fire department sprang to action. As the

clock ticked, many people from different emergency agencies all played a part in making sure that Mr. Brooks got the help he needed as fast as possible. OPP, Sault Ste Marie Ambulance Service and Wawa Fire Rescue were converging on his location.

All of Batchawana trucks were now in en route up the twisty national highway along Lake Superior to hopefully make a difference in her life.

Being 45 miles North of Sault Ste Marie, they arrived first on scene with jaws of life auto extrication equipment.

The fire chief and fire fighters quickly assessed the plan for gaining access to her and started removing components of the tractor. It seemed like an impossible task, to move so much metal. One item at a time was carefully cut away to start to free up her limbs.

Sault Ste Marie Ambulance arrives and backs in close to the inverted truck and prepares to receive patient into their care. Minutes seem like hours as fire fighters final-

ly cut away enough steel to access her for extrication. The golden hour of life after a trauma event has long gone and first responders struggle to wait. Traffic travelling through this busy tourism corridor is backed up for miles in both directions.

The EMS team then slides a back board into the hole of the truck and inch by inch, pull the driver out.

Wawa Fire Rescue arrives to provide Heavy Extrication assistance, thankfully they were not needed.

Sault Ste Marie paramedics and Batchawana fire fighters carry her on the back board to a waiting stretcher and bring her to the ambulance for transport to Sault Ste Marie.

Mr. Brooks had delivered his promise to that lone truck driver that everything will be ok. Angels had made sure that the proper life saving personal and equipment were ready to respond.

Wawa Fire & Rescue, Sault Ste Marie Ambulance Service and Ontario Provincial Police.

Especially to Mr. Jonathan Brooks for his unselfish and compassionate actions that made a difference in such a rural area of Algoma district of Ontario.

Thank you to the local people who responded first and dealt with getting the scene safe and going above and beyond. The staff at twilight resort took charge of the scene and kept it safe. Well done!

A Heart Stopping Mystery Thomas Hart was a healthy man, at least when he was young. However, thanks to years of abuse to his body, which included the usual drinking, smoking, unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, and not enough sleep – he developed health problems, including diabetes, ulcers and high blood pressure, all of which he was popping pills for. This was because he lead a busy life as a stock broker.

Shortly after graduating from university in 1992 he managed to get a job with the prestigious market investment company, Stockton, Sellers, and Buyers. That meant long days and nights investing in the stock market and gathering investor clients to the company. Thanks to his hard work and hustle, he managed to bring in millions of dollars, and many powerful corporate clients.

Over the years, however, he did make some bad investments, and one of the more heavily invested clients lost millions of dollars due to that.

That was a very stressful time for him, as he battled to win that client back, as well as keep his job in the company.

He had been hauled onto the carpet, and warned about his performance miscalculations that had cost the company dearly. He assured the Chairman that he would not let that happen again. He lived up to that assurance for several years, which put him under extreme stress. Within the company that also gave rise to resentment among others in the company who were not as successful. There was only one other person who kept pace with Hart's portfolio and prestige among the investment community at large. That was Harrison Smitham. Their personalities clashed too, as well as their different methods of bringing in those investments.

It also irked Smitham that even though he had more years with the company, this upstart so quickly became the 'darling' of the company, and seemed to be able to come out of any mess smelling like a rose. That resentment went on for years, fostering an ongoing feud.

Along the way, Thomas also managed to find a wife.

Her name was Terressa Curtiz. They met at the company Christmas party held at the Board Chairman's mansion a couple of years after being hired. The Chairman was friends with her father, and that is how she and her date got invited to the party.

It was instant lust. She was a tall Latino, with jet black hair, and bronze skin. She had the most smoldering brown eyes that just bored into your head and soul, he claimed.

She was wearing a low-cut

beige evening gown, which accented the curves of her body, as well as the beautiful amber necklace and matching earrings she was wearing.

He introduced himself and offered her a drink. By the end of the evening, they had disappeared into one of the bedrooms and a passionate night. By early in the next year, they were engaged. They were married on Valentine's Day of 2001.

Unfortunately by 2013 the marriage had long since deteriorated into acrimony.

Fortunately there were no children to worry about. She resented that he no longer paid attention to her. She also suspected that he was having an affair with one of his client's wives. He, in turn, was very annoyed at the amount of money she spent on herself and the house, and the friends she hung out with. He was also furious that she had taken a job several years ago. as the Chief Administrative Officer to the CEO of their rival company, Thorne & Rosebush. He suspected she was having an affair with him. Tit for tat they rationalized to each other. Despite all this, the unspoken agreement was that there would be no divorce, as that would not be mutually beneficial to either of them. The outward appearance of marriage bliss after all these years worked well, and kept their social status intact.

On Saturday, July 27th of 2013 Thomas had slept in after a hectic week. He awoke about nine a.m. He had the most terrible chest pains, and couldn't get his breath. He broke out in a sweat. Heart attack! That was his first thought. He looked over to see if Terressa was in the other bed. Despite their problems, she still slept in the same bedroom, just the separate bed. He was not totally surprised to find that it had not even been slept in.

It took a real effort to grab his i-phone on his nightstand, and dial 911. He fumbled with it, trying to concentrate and find the numbers. The pain was excruciating and he could only whisper his name and address to the operator before he dropped the phone onto the floor and lost consciousness.

Terressa and the ambulance arrived at the same time. She brought them to the bedroom, and found him half on the bed, half draped over the side. She gasped in shock at seeing him like that. The paramedics pushed her aside and looked after him. They rushed him to the hospital. They were able to stabilize him, and he awoke several hours later. He was surprised to see Terressa sitting in a chair beside the bed.

He smiled, genuinely delighted to see her there. He whispered, “Hi, Terry.” He wanted to ask her where she was all last night, but thought better of it. I'll ask her that later. He just wanted to have someone there beside him. This heart attack had scared him 'to death', as the saying goes.

He suddenly realized how few real friends he had whom he could talk to. He had no family left. So Terressa was the only one he had.

She gave a weak attempt at a smile before saying, “You gave us all quite a scare. All that stress has caught up with you, and a heart attack is the result. The doctor says you will need a pacemaker put in. Your heart is damaged beyond repair. They plan to operate tomorrow. Dr. Morrow says they have the newest and most technically advanced machine ready to go. The computer chip is so small that it is no bigger than the end of a pencil. It can be programmed to monitor you night and day. You will be able to check it out yourself, and adjust the heartbeat accordingly, depending on how much exertion you do at any given time. There is an APP that can be installed on your i-phone. There is also a key chain available to carry around your neck, in case you don't have access to your phone at any time.

The hospital can monitor it too, without you even knowing or feeling anything. It sounds like science fiction.

Isn't that just the most amazing thing. What they can do today!” She shook her as she thought about it.

On Monday, July 29th they put the pacemaker in his chest. He was released from hospital on Thursday, August 1st. On Friday, August 2nd he was dead.

There was a major investigation. Dr. Morrow and his medical team assisted with the autopsy, and recovered the pacemaker so they could take it back to the lab and do some tests to determine why it failed. The manufacturer was called in too to check if it was faulty directly from their facility.

By Wednesday, August 7th it was determined that his computer had been hacked into, and the APP was reprogrammed to shut down at exactly 911. The significance of the time wasn't noticed at first until the police were called in to investigate this as a murder. The lead detective, Don Matthews recognized this as the call sign of a terrorist organization that hacked into hospitals and medical centres, in order to retrieve personal information and health records. That data was sold on the black market for a handsome profit.

Dr. Morrow commented to him, “This is preposterous. This has never happened before that a pacemaker could be accessed and altered to cause it to stop altogether.

There are codes to prevent that from happening. It's

funny that this should happen right now. I just saw a report on TV about this new crime wave of hackers becoming sophisticated enough to tamper with any computer system. Is nothing safe?” he asked. Then he went on, “I suppose if that is what has happened, they could have just increased his heart rate.

That would have killed him just as easily. But to shut it down completely in such a deliberate act, I can't imagine anyone doing that. In either case, this is murder, for sure, if your theory is correct.” Det. Matthews agreed. He went on to advise the entire team assembled at the hospital lab that he would be following up on other possibilities. He got the assurance from them that the pacemaker was not faulty before leaving their facility. He took the pacemaker with him, despite the objections of Dr. Morrow and the manufacturer. He signed a written note that he would take responsibility for it's safe return to them after all the legal matters had been cleared up. He went back to the police computer crime lab unit for some info and see if they could find who had hacked it. While they were doing that, he went back to old-fashioned police investigation work.

He ended up with 3 possible suspects who might have wanted to see Hart dead. They were Harrison Smitham, Philip Walker, and of course the wife, Terressa Curtiz.

The first person he interviewed was Philip Walker. He was a client who had lost a lot of money in a bad investment that Hart had recommended.

He owned 'Walker Wireless Computer Sales and Service' until he had to declare bankruptcy earlier in 2013. He soon realized that he had the technical know-how to do such a hack job. He also had the motive and means. After his interview, he kept him on the list of suspects.

Next up was Terressa Hart.

She admitted that she was finally going to divorce him, in order to get her half of the communal property as required by law. She was going to marry Horace Spooner. He was the CEO of Thorne & Rosebush whom she worked for, and indeed had become her lover. She had confronted her husband just two days prior to his untimely death. He wouldn't agree to it. Matthews had learned this from her after intense questioning. But she insisted that she didn't kill him so she could get the entire estate for herself. She assured him that she knew nothing about computers and hacking was way beyond her imagination or capabilities.

That seemed reasonable to him, but knew she could have hired someone to do it for her. He noted to follow up on that as he wrapped up the interview, with her still on the list.

turn to be interviewed. He was a crusty old so-andso, Matthews soon realized as he began his interrogation. He learned about their rivalry and their hatred of each other. But he assured Matthews that he wouldn't know how to hack into a computer. Besides, he admitted, “If I was going to kill him, I would have just shot him or stabbed him – nothing so elaborate and devious as that – and long ago.”, he emphasized.” That made sense to Matthews. His bluntness also convinced him that he likely was not the murderer.

But just a bit later, he also was surprised to learn from him that he had been in love with Terressa years ago, and actually he was the one who brought her to that Christmas party, but left empty-handed when Hart ended up taking her home. Another factor in the build-up of his hatred for him, and thus a motive. So, he decided to keep him as a suspect for the moment, although low on the list.

By the end of the afternoon of Monday, August 12th he went back to the police lab.

He wanted to see if they had come up with any names of the terrorist group know as '911'. Instead he was stunned to learn who the hacker really was. He was amazed how quickly they had been able to track this person down.

It was a 17-year old student from Halifax, Nova Scotia by the name of Steven Warden.

He immediately flew down to interview him. The RCMP had arrested him and was being held at their headquarters.

That was held on Tuesday, August 13th. He was quite co-operative. It was apparent that he was really scared that he had been found out, and what the consequences of what he had done might be. He explained, “I found this request on Facebook about a Dr. Pace wanting to do some computer scientific testing. He identified himself as a researcher at the Heart Institute connected with the University of Toronto.

There was an official looking logo, so it looked legitimate.

It sounded intriguing and a challenge and fun, plus the money I would get for doing this. I was told that this was just an experiment on a lab rat, and not a human, to test a chip implant, for being hack proof. Once I disabled the pacemaker, I panicked when I could not get it to start up again. I notified the contact on Facebook about the problem. That was about nine that morning. He assured me that he would fix it at his end, and my services were no longer needed. He ended by congratulating me on being the first person to perform such a procedure, but regretted that it would have to remain a secret. I was glad of that. I certainly didn't want to be found out what a mistake that I had made by doing this hacking.” ...Story Continued on Page 9

...Story Continued From Page 8 Matthews knew that he was sincere. He wasn't sure what legal ramifications there would be for him. It hadn't registered earlier, but it suddenly hit him that Warden said this happened about nine. To be precise, it was 911. That is all that meant.

This had nothing to do with the terrorist organization that he had originally thought had been involved.

He was disturbed how such small clues can lead you in the wrong or the right direction.

He had one last request for Warden. That was to reveal his Facebook contact. He was surprised at the name.

He rushed back to his office in Toronto. On Wednesday, August 14th, he got an arrest warrant issued for Miguel Curtiz, Terressa's father.

Upon questioning, he broke down and confessed. “Once I learned from my daughter about my son-in-law's heart attack, and the new pacemaker being installed, I recognized the perfect opportunity to kill him off, so Terressa could get control of his estate.

Then I could tap into that money myself, through her.

I needed the money desperately, as I too had lost heavily in the stock market, thanks to him. I have some gambling debts to pay off. I have been able to stall them for awhile, but they were now getting serious about me paying up.

I saw this report on TV about the possibility of hacking into computer systems that could alter pacemakers in a disastrous way. It seemed ideal, and untraceable back to me.

I got my friend Philip Walker to create this Facebook message, complete with an offi-

cial looking address. We got a response, and told him what to do. It worked too. Sorry the kid got caught. Guess we don't enough about computers, do we? You guys are good.” Matthews agreed. He marveled how technology could be used for good or bad, depending on the situation, or the person. This one had terrifying implications, he thought. He wondered how the legal system would handle this 'first of a kind' case.

He sighed as he left Curtiz to be processed for Hart's murder, joking to the clerk, “Well, that solves this heartstopping mystery, doesn't it?”

The clerk groaned in jest at the word play. “Leave it up to you to come up with such a groaner, Matthews!” He waved him away as he went back to his paperwork.

Matthews began the process to get another arrest warrant issued, for Walker this time. While waiting for the paper work to get finished he decided to see Terressa to give her the news about her father. He wondered if she didn't know about what her father had done, or were they in this together. Suspicious minds never rest, he thought to himself. Can I ever turn it off? He put that question to rest for the moment, as he approached the Hart residence. He knocked on the front door. He knocked a bit louder the second time, after getting no response. As in most murder mystery stories, the door was ajar. He opened it and poked his head in, calling out her name... Oh, boy, the day isn't over yet, and is he in for a surprise, and another mystery to solve!

Lakehead Professor Studied Important Sunscreen Safety Tips For Canadians 1.4 Billion-Year-Old Rocks

Health Canada would like to remind Canadians to protect themselves and their families from the sun. Exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays without sunscreen can cause much more than a sunburn.

It can lead to sun damage (such as skin wrinkling and hardening, dark patches, precancerous skin changes) and can increase the risk of skin cancer.

There are many sunscreen products available in Canada.

It is important to choose a sunscreen with the level of sun protection factor (SPF) that is right for you. The SPF tells you the level of protection that the sunscreen provides against sunburn. It also tells you the length of time that your sunscreen-protected skin can be exposed before it starts to get red.

Sunscreen safety tips Choose a high SPF. Protect your health by using a broadspectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. The sunscreen should also say "broad-spectrum" on the label, to screen out most of the UVA and UVB rays.

Sunscreens and babies.

Do not put sunscreen on babies less than 6 months of age. Keep them out of the sun and heat as their skin and bodies are much more sensitive than an adult's. A sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher should be applied to babies over 6 months of age.

Look for water resistant.

Look for claims on the label that the product stays on better in water (water resistant, very water resistant).

Read application instructions. For best results, be sure to follow the instructions on the product label.

Use lots of it. Use the recommended amount of sunscreen.

Apply it often. Apply sunscreen before heading outside and use a generous amount. Reapply 20 minutes after going outside and at least every 2 hours after that.

Cover exposed areas generously, including ears, nose, the tops of feet and backs of knees. Reapply sunscreen often to get the best possible protection especially if you are swimming or sweating heavily.

Protect yourself.

Sunscreen and insect repellents can be used safely together. Apply the sunscreen first, then the insect repellent.

Near Dorion To Determine Abundance Of Life On Earth

Thunder Bay, ON - A Lakehead University Geology professor is part of a team of researchers who collaborated on an article exploring oxygen and life on Earth that Nature.com will release soon.

The article describes how the researchers used gypsum east of Thunder Bay to determine if there was as much life on Earth approximately one billion, four hundred million years ago as there is now.

“The group of scientists I worked with devised a way to determine how abundant life was in the past compared to today,” Dr. Phil Fralick said.

“Oxygen is a key element in the life processes of both plants and animals. It is given off when plants photosynthesize and animals breathe it in to burn calories in their bodies.”

Oxygen occurs as three isotopes – atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. The ratio of each of these isotopes to one another is constant on Earth, but animals and plants interacting with oxygen change the isotope ratios in the atmosphere, Dr. Fralick said.

“The more interaction there is with life the more the ratios change. So, if we could measure the isotope ratios of oxygen at a time in the past we could compare the results to today's atmosphere and see if life on Earth was more or less abundant. In fact, we can sample the ancient atmosphere,” he said.

The mineral gypsum, the white stuff in wallboard, comes out of solution in the ocean and saline lakes when the water evaporates and gypsum has oxygen in it that had been in the atmosphere.

“There are old dried-up saline lake deposits to the east of Thunder Bay. The gypsum is in the red rocks from Dorion to past Kama Hill. We sampled this gypsum and analyzed oxygen's isotopic ratios in it. We know that these rocks are 1,400,000,000 years old, that is one third of the way back to the beginning of the Earth,” he said.

“The most advanced life form at the time were just one celled organisms like bacteria. The oxygen isotopes told us that life on Earth was far

less abundant than today, but it was operating on Earth,” Dr. Fralick said.

The paper, called Triple oxygen isotope evidence for limited mid-Proterozoic primary production, is scheduled for Advance Online Publication (AOP) on www. nature.com at 1 pm Eastern Time today (Wednesday, July 18).
