Chadwick Home 9th Annual Golf Tournament

On Friday, July 10th, CHADWIC Home held their 9th Annual Golf Tournament.

It was a beautiful day, unless you were one of the last few teams that couldn’t quite finish due to lightning, however as usual, our golfers made the best of it and fun was had by all!

Congratulations to our winners this year: Terry Lesarge, Tim Lesarge and Pete Russ; these guys played a great round! Contributing to their score was a hole in one on number three made by Terry! (sadly his luck did not hold up on number seven!)

We are once again thankful for the support of Northern Lights Ford for sponsoring the Hole in One chance to win a car on hole seven! Northern Lights Ford has been a partner with us since our very first golf tournament and we appreciate their eagerness to stay involved!!!

This year our Green Fee sponsor was Wesdome Gold Mine. The money contributed to our green fees truly ensures a successful tournament. Without this funding our budget would be at a minimum. We are so very grateful for this contribution.

News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP The Ontario Legislature may be recessed for the summer, but there is still so much going on, both here in AlgomaManitoulin and across the province. I have enjoyed many opportunities to speak with so many constituents in the last few weeks. Algoma-Manitoulin has no shortage of events for locals and visitors alike to attend and enjoy. Some events are annual, and we look forward to attending each summer. Others are special events, gatherings for special announcements, grand openings, festivals, concerts…. And the list goes on.

In the coming weeks I will continue to travel across the riding and look forward to meeting with many friends, old and new.

One issue of special note that I wish to bring to your attention is the matter of the Waukesha

Seniors Expo Offers Info. For All Ages

I was pleased to read your Seniors Expo was so beneficial with 20 exhibitors. Very little was not included.

A Seniors Expo is in the works for Manitouwadge seniors for September but I would hope it also includes Service Ontario which includes the forms that can be picked up at any time on 'Power of Attorney and Power of Personal Care' which we all should be aware of. There is so much out there that seniors should be aware of and that many are eligible for which would make their lives or those of their friends so much more 'enjoyable' as Barb's article implies. More and more senior residents are coming forward for the wonderful monthly foot care our Family Health Team provides and a time where other health issues can be shared.

We worry about our stubborn seniors who do not want to bother anyone and in some areas they think there is a cost involved and that is not so. We are not used to getting anything without a price tag.

Regrettably The Echo in Manitouwadge had to fold, so it is difficult to reach those without computers, but I feel some would be interested in finding out more about your Northern Credit Union. We appreciated Ken Warwick's efforts to keep it going but local writers and support did not happen. Population 1200 and rising! Some from Wawa. Many travel to Wawa often for vehicles, etc.

Water Diversion Project that has been in the news for quite some time. This project has been proposed to meet the needs of the city of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

The city’s proposal is divert millions of litres of fresh water daily from the Great Lakes. Such proposals have been under the scrutiny of international agreements such as the Great Lakes– Saint Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Agreement and the corresponding Great Lakes -St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact. These agreements were meant to safeguard and protect the Great Lakes from unnecessary diversions.

It is important to note that there has been a long standing policy that no water from the Great Lakes is to be diverted to areas which lie outside of the

Great Lakes Basin. However, the city of Waukesha is not located fully within the basin.

As such, diverting water to that community has until now been forbidden.

The Province of Ontario is a voting member of the international government agencies who oversee the agreements.

Since Algoma-Manitoulin is fully located within the bounds of the Great Lakes Basin I have been quite vocal on this issue, and have reminded the Premier and her ministers that extreme caution must be used as our representatives consider whether to approve this project.

I have pointed out to the premier that the ramifications of this decision reach far beyond simply supplying drinking water to a city that is not fully located within the boundaries of the Great Lakes Basin. By voting to approve this exception to the terms of the compact, it will set precedent that truly opens the floodgates to similar future applications.

The international authorities received over well 11,000 comments from the general public, municipalities, special interest groups and others, of which fully 99% expressed disfavour of the proposal. This was truly and important test of the Great Lakes Compact Agreement and it seems that the officials involved have not stepped up to the plate to protect our precious environment nor the residents within the geographical area.

In May, Ontario had its final opportunity to have a say in the precedent setting decision before it went to a final vote by the American states in June.

Despite receiving many thousands of urgings not to support the proposal, the governments of Ontario, Quebec and eight U.S. Great Lakes states voted to approve the project which will see 37 million litres of water, each and every day, diverted to a community which lies outside the basin. As well, how long will it be until the request goes in for more? With this precedent

setting decision, how many proposals from other communities will we see come along to request the same exception to the rules in the future?

The Great Lakes are vital to the region’s ecosystem and economy. They represent 20% of the world’s available surface freshwater. While this project seems to be moving forward, it is important that we remain vigilant in protecting the Great Lakes. It is imperative that we continue to work to strengthen, improve and enforce the terms of the Great Lakes– Saint Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Agreement.

Legion News Civic Holiday Is Well Worth Celebrating There is not very much news to report. The summer and hot weather are here and the lake and outdoor enjoyments take priority.

But at the Branch we have our priorities and that is our duty to our VETERANS. Let us not forget the young men and woman who at this time are serving all over the world to help those countries with problems. Also keeping in our hearts and prayers the training troops in Irak, Ukraine, Latvia and other places. Not to forget our Navy who are busy at many places. We pray to keep the Oceans safe for sailors from many countries.

Let us keep these Canadians in our thoughts and let us be proud to have them in our midst.

As usual our Cribbage players are still at it every Saturday.

A few more weeks and summer will be over. We hope everyone will be ready to work for OUR Legion as volunteers and do whatever we can to make Wawa a better place too.

Our own Albert Nicholas had a little scrape due to feeding a Chipmunk so when you see him around town wish him well.

Little Johnnie was in school and his teacher asked him.

"Were did Napoleon die?"

Without even having to think Johnnie replied, "On page 47 of my history book!"

Though a lot of people associate the Civic Holiday with another day away from work, it’s come to be so much more than that. Celebrated the first Monday in August, the Civic Holiday is notorious for summer gatherings, picnics, and BBQ’s. And with right reason. This day is to recognize and celebrate our diverse cultural heritage, our communities, and our rights and duties as citizens.

In Ontario many communities use this day to celebrate a historical founding figure and a wide array of names are designated to it.

Torontonians have deemed the day as Simcoe Day after John Graves Simcoe, the founder of the town of York which later became Toronto.

In the nation’s capital, August 1st is known as Colonel By Day in recognition of Bytown – later Ottawa – founder, John By, who we also have to thank for leading the construction of the Rideau Canal. The day is known as John Galt Day in Guelph, Joseph Brant day in Burlington, and Alexander MacKenzie day in Sarnia, but these are just a few. A number of smaller municipalities have their own names and

for those that don’t the day remains the ‘Civic Holiday.’

That’s not to say that only historical figures deserve recognition for the development and sustainment of our communities. We should take the day to remember and celebrate those who have played important roles in building our communities like our family members, friends, volunteers and small businesses who play vital roles every day. It’s important that we acknowledge and keep supporting them. A great way to do that is to buy local to sustain our communities. Buying local isn’t as hard as it may sound and it reaps many benefits, like keeping jobs and local cultures alive – and let’s be honest – we all love farmer’s markets.

The civic holiday could be one of the most important holidays for this reason. But somehow it isn’t yet a statutory holiday in Canada and a lot of people don’t get the day off unless they specifically request it. It’s definitely worth making the Civic Holiday a statutory holiday so that everyone, not only government and big-company workers, get the day off. If

anyone says that Canada has enough statutory holidays as it is, urge them to take a look at other countries.

Austria, France, and Sweden are among many other countries that have more statutory holidays than Canada. But these three also happen to have a higher happiness rating than Canada.

This could make one wonder if there is any correlation between their happiness rating and the amount of statutory holidays they have.

Something else to consider is whether or not the amount of holidays affects productivity. It might just be a coincidence that the three countries named above also happen to rank higher on a scale of productivity per hours worked than Canada, but then again it might not…

However, I think the most important thing here is not to worry about stats and ratings, but to think about what we’re celebrating. The Civic Holiday is a day to celebrate what we have accomplished together.

With that in mind I hope you enjoy the long weekend.

Glad Grad 2016 Once again the GR. 12 graduates from schools in Wawa and Dubreuilville had a chance to celebrate their accomplishments with a variety of service providers in the community.

The Glad Grad Committee would like to extend a huge thankyou to RBC Wawa.

RBC donated the funds to cover the cost of the event this year, without this donation our Glad Grad day would not be possible!!!

Water Mishaps Can Be Deadly July is “Water Safety Awareness Month”. It seems that July is the worst month of the year, statistically for accidental drowning annually.

On thinking about it I would guess just about everyone has had some near misses at sometime through their life, often through some thoughtless or downright stupid action on their own part.

I recall one adventure when I’d be about eight years old. My Dad was an avid fisherman and would anxiously await the Spring perch run when we would make the exodus “way up North” to Lake Simcoe shortly after the ice went out. That year we went to the government dock at Beaverton, Ontario, on a sunny Spring day.

The concrete dock was bereft of boats that early in the year. It didn’t take long for the fishing to wear thin for me and before long I was balance walking along an eight by eight timber mounted on the face of the dock about two and a half feet from the top and maybe two feet about the water’s surface. It was intended to act as a fender to keep boats from scraping against the concrete face of the dock.

It provided an excellent, though somewhat risky,

boardwalk for small feet. Dad warned me to stop doing it because I would probably fall in. “Couldn’t happen” I was quite sure. Needless to say, it did happen.

Being the pragmatic type, Dad had of course allowed it to happen while keeping a close watch on the situation.

He simply stepped down onto the very same timber I had just fell off, waited for me to pop up in the water and lifted me out without hardly getting splashed.

Meanwhile, Gord Morrison, a family friend of my Dad who had accompanied us with his family, had jumped into the water when he saw me tumble in.

Obviously more excitable, he had leaped in without a thought and Dad reached down and helped him out of the water too.

My Mother had the foresight to bring along a change of clothes for me but there was considerable good natured humor at the sight of Gord, a large man, dressed in bits of clothing that his rather petite wife would spare for the trip home.

That was my only near miss, and just as my Dad expected, a good lesson in experience.

“Carrying the message of Love” with Joan Brooks

I’ve just completed my morning routine – meditation, Qigong and a wonderful morning walk. All to do with Love of Self and Love of this magnificent planet we inhabit. My one hour meditation takes me within where everything is quiet, peaceful, compassionate and Safe. My Qigong is awesome. I’ve subscribed to Holden Qigong’s 30 Day Challenge, just seven minutes daily to wake up the body, and I love, love, love it. And my walk, what can I say? I am a morning person; love the new day with a breeze swirling throughout, waves of the Lake washing the shoreline, the colorful wild flowers dressing up the sides of the pathway, the little chipmunks scurrying about and the crows, ravens, seagulls riding the airwaves seemingly without effort, and, the little floatplanes taking off with their cargo and passengers seeking a wonderful peaceful experience within our majestic wilderness.

This is my daily morning routine followed by a smoothie with all the elements to get

my day off to a wholesome start. Then I turn on the TV. I just wanted to get a weather report and find out the Blue Jays score. Yikes!

“Does it seem like the world is descending into chaos,” asked Ted Murray, blogger.

Yes, my sentiments exactly. I usually watch minimal world news preferring local or national news if I need to watch any of it. But these days all I see is uprisings against governments, protests about any number of things, and seemingly random violence.

How can a person make any sense of this? “Is it a sign of the end of times or a really bad cosmic stretch of energy,” adds Murray. “Should you be in fear for your life and livelihood?”

I will say that for me personally, I try to see both sides of the story. That doesn’t mean I condone violence of any kind, but rather see it all as an opportunity to hold all in thought and prayer.

Actually at times I see this chaos as the necessary dismantling of the old power and control structure that has

gripped the planet for centuries. Hey, taking this personally, at one time I lived under that old power and control structure and experienced unbelievable chaos in my Life before I surrendered to Love and all that is. And there are many in our beautiful little community who are doing the same. We are all on a Path to wholeness, to Oneness of all that is. And like most Paths, there are many curves, hills and valleys that try to distract us and lead us astray.

For me, it seems health issues will always pop up and test me, actually force me to conquer whatever the issue is.

I question why there are so many nasty illnesses (chaos and crisis) that are not conquered. I also understand that each ‘Spiritual beings living a human experience” among us will conquer in their own time and space. This past chaos and crisis of mine was an example of rising above and conquering. It has forced me to change in unprecedented ways.

“It is a wonderful sign that things are changing and that

people are beginning to wake up to a new paradigm,” adds Murray. “The global group consciousness is rising so fast that lies are being revealed and atrocities can no longer be hidden from the public.”

Instead of being fearful I am joyful in knowing that I am helping to usher in a new era of peace and abundance for the entire world. Yes, if you could catch a glimpse into my watching this global chaos you would wonder what the heck she is smiling about.

“What we see on the news is only the signs of the crumbling of existing structures; however, we know that love and compassion are ready to supplant greed and fear.

When you remain focused on love then you are helping to bring the new world into reality as quickly and as smoothly as possible.” Wow, what a wonderful promise being fulfilled. Thank You Ted Murray for the reminder.

Bill Hicks We drink a lot, we Canucks.

According to the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, we drink more than 50 percent above the global average.

We come by it honestly.

Our first Prime Minister, Sir John A., was a notorious sot who once vomited during a public debate. He apologized, saying that he “got sick not from drink, but from being forced to listen to the ranting of my honorable opponent”.

Did we learn from Sir John's intemperance? Not really. Canadians remain world famous for our robust embrace of the liquor bottle.

One of our most illustrious diplomats, Charles Ritchie, observed “I sometimes think Canadians, who are at heart a sensitive, pugnacious, voluble and amorous race, are only released by whiskey.”

And them of course, there's our most recent poster child for alcohol overindulgence – Rob Ford.

Rob would have fit right in in Sir John's day. Heavy drinking was the norm back in the early 19th century.

And why not? Whiskey was cheaper than wine or beer – and easier to buy than tea or coffee. That's because farmers who grew barley, rye and corn found they could make more money distilling their crops than shipping them off as grain. And there was a ready market. Folks commonly started the day with a tumbler of rye rather than a cup of coffee.

It was also – thanks to spectacularly lousy hygiene – often safer to drink booze than water. Children drank whiskey and physicians of the day even declared that whiskey was 'conducive to health'.

In 1820 American men over 15 (and no doubt Canadian men as well) were drinking on average 14 gallons of whiskey a year. And it was uncommonly powerful whiskey too – 100 proof for the most part.

Nobody had to seek out a tavern or show proof of age.

They could buy a drink at the grocery store or at the barber shop. Men drank before work, on the way to work and at work.

An astonishingly large portion of the North American workforce spent its waking hours in a drunken haze reeling from chore to chore.

In a book called Heaven's Ditch about the construction of the Erie Canal, author Jack Davies writes: “The typical canal worker drank at least a pint, often a quart, of whiskey daily. Whiskey 'was provided bounti­fully (by the employers) and in true western style.'

Thirsty from a salty diet and abun­dant sweating, the men drank and drank. ...”

And drank some more.

But change was coming. A teetotaller named Henry Ford was on the horizon. He and his fellow factory owners had no use for drunken employees. There would be no drinking on the assembly lines.

Given the level of drunkenness its amazing that anything was accomplished, much less an ambitious project like the Eric Canal system. It was miserable, exhausting, backbreaking work, but it got done.

Maybe that's why it got done. As one worker put it “You wouldn't expect us to work on the canal if we were sober would you?”

Female Purple Finch Drinking From Birdbath

Notes From the Bird Lady It's Juvenile Bird Season!

Juvenile birds are all over the place now so there is much more activity & noise ... and I like it that way!

I mostly have Purple Finches in the yard now, adults and noisily begging juveniles. They are in my trees, on my platform feeder and in my flowerbeds. They are adorable!

I've been having a great time watching a small family of Eastern Bluebirds in my neighbourhood. The adult female likes to perch & hunt from my neighbour's eavestrough. The adult male & at least one juvenile like to perch on & hunt from the street light post at the end

of my driveway. They can be seen zooming all over the neighbourhood: up onto rooftops, down to lawns, up onto power lines, down to my back fence, back and forth catching insects. Fun to watch!!

I've had a little family of Red Breasted Nuthatches visiting the yard lately. One adult & 2 juveniles for sure - I haven't been able to tell yet if 2 adults are around. A family of Chickadees has been around for a while - at least 4 chicks for them. Again, the youngsters are begging loudly and following the adults around.

Chipping Sparrow families are in my yard. They nest in my neighbour's shrubs and come over the fence into my yard to feed a lot. 'My' Crow family is around daily. They successfully raised 3 chicks this year. I hear and see them up on the rooftops a lot.

They are the noisiest juveniles around!

It's hilarious to watch & listen to because all the juveniles are fully capable of feeding themselves now. Soon, the adults will make that clear to them.

Even if adult & juvenile birds in one specie look the same (as in Chickadees), it's very easy to tell adults from

juveniles right now. Adults look worn & tired juveniles look fresh & energetic. I've seen it in a few species now.

Nesting season for most is over and now it's teaching time but the adults are still mostly feed- Juvenile Chipping Sparrow ing their young.

They look tired, their feathers are faded and worn out - they are busy, busy, busy!

They are definitely earning their fresh fall molt.

Hummingbirds are hitting my feeders regularly. I haven't seen any juveniles yet Juvenile Red Breasted Nuthatch but my husband fall for the winter, as they thinks he saw one yesterday. have they past 8 years or so.

MHS Students + CHADWIC Home + WAVS Sexual Assault Counsellor = Violence Prevention!

The 2015/2016 school year at Michipicoten High School (MHS) was once again a great one for Service providers Pam Carruthers (CHADWIC Home) and Kaitlyn Dube (Wawa & Area Victim Services).

Throughout the last number of years a great partnership has been developed between local organizations and Michipicoten High School. MHS has provided

CHADWIC Home, WAVS and Algoma Public Health with a great space within the school where we can provide our services to the students.

CHADWIC Home and WAVS provided students with free pizza lunches during the cold weather months; information about students’ safety is displayed throughout the classroom that was used. Various topics of conversation happened dur-

ing these lunch hours, such as; Healthy Dating, Sexual Assault, Substance Use and Awareness, Texting and Driving, and Healthy Relationships. At times upwards of 30 students would come in for lunch and discussion. It was very impressive to see the student participation.

And it was a great way for them to increase their knowledge about where to find help in the community.

Thank you to all of the students for always being so very kind and respectful and engaging during these lunch hours!!

With financial assistance from United Way, and support from Guidance Counsellor Jamie Kusic, CHADWIC Home was able to provide a half day workshop for the grade 11 and 12 girls. Community Outreach Worker Pam Carruthers and

Sexual Assault Counsellor Kaitlyn Dube designed the morning workshops to raise awareness about Dating Violence, Healthy Relationships, Sexual Assault and Empowerment for young women. A successful and well attended workshop!!

Great things happen when a community works together, to engage and empower our youth!

The Civic Holiday Weekend Camping Trip It was the Civic Holiday on this first weekend of August, 1966.

Harry and Serena Strickland loved camping. They planned a 3-day canoe trip on the Sacredo River to a reportedly spectacular waterfall along the way to great lake trout fishing on Bow Lake, according to their neighbour, Tyrone Bell. He suggested they see it soon, as there was talk of putting a power dam at that falls.

There is an easy path up and around the falls in order to get to the lake, he assured them. He told them about the access point to park their vehicle just a few miles out of town where there was a sign-up sheet posted for everyone when they went out on the river, just as a safety precaution, in case anyone was reported missing. It gave the authorities a place to start. Information included name, address, phone number, vehicle description and license plate number, destination, and ETA back at the access point. In those days no one thought of privacy issues, theft, etc. He warned them it was a good long canoe trek to get to the falls from the access point, but would be a worthwhile trip.

They arrived there about nine on Saturday morning. They got the canoe loaded , and filled out the sheet. They were curious who else was using this point. It is just like checking visitor logs in museums, tourist info centres, etc.. Everyone does it, don't they. Harry saw that there was one other vehicle in the parking lot, an old rusty, dented fourdoor black sedan. Harry noted that whoever owned this vehicle had not signed in. In fact, no one had signed it that day. He just assumed that they were not familiar with the proper procedure, or maybe in a rush to get going, they just simply forgot.

“Not my business, anyway,” he declared. He shrugged his shoulders and headed to the river, where Serena was already waiting.

The paddling was strenuous as they headed upstream.

The way back would be easier, they were thankful for. They approached their destination at the waterfalls by six that evening. The last stretch was a long straight one. Harry steadied the canoe while Serena got out her camera to take some pictures. It was indeed a spectacular sight, he commented to her. They could hear the sound of it too, although it was not too loud just yet. They were far enough away to not get the full impact.

Something shiny caught his eye near the shore. His first thought it was a silver lure from a fishing rod, and that somebody else was there fishing. He was disappointed, as he hoped they would have the spot all to themselves. Then he noticed it moving into the bush. It looked like a black blob was moving too. It disappeared into the bush very quickly. His first thought was that it was a big black bear.

That was something he had not thought about, or planned for.

He didn't mention anything to Serena. She was still busy with the camera anyway. But it is something to watch out for, he

thought to himself.

Once she had all the photos she wanted, they pulled their canoe to the left-hand shoreline, and found a nice sandy shoal to pull the canoe up onto for the night. They were in luck too, as there was a small opening among the trees, ideal for setting up their tent and getting a fire going. He commented as they were eating: “Just think, if all goes well, tomorrow we will have some nice fish for supper.

Maybe we can find some wild blueberries too to go with our dessert of packaged cookies.”

She laughed at him, and teased him - “Oh yeah, dream on, Mr. Fisherman. I'm glad we have the tinned salmon as a backup.

That will likely be our only fish this weekend.” He laughed as he put on an indignant face. “Oh, yeah, we'll see. You'll be eating those words, or should I say fish, tomorrow night. You just wait and see!”

It was nearly eight by the time they had finished eating. Serena went into the tent to finish getting it ready for bed. She also got her bug spray on. Harry sat on a log, smoking a cigarette. Just before she came back out, he thought he heard a snap sound, like a small branch or twig being broken, as if by a person, or maybe it was that bear that he thought he saw far off, earlier that day. He got up, and looked towards the tent, as that was where the sound seemed to be coming from. He didn't see anything, but did get a whiff of musk perfume. That was when Serena came out, saying she was ready for the bugs. He cut her short, as he whispered to her, “Ssh. Be quiet. I heard something behind the tent. And do you smell that perfume?” She thought he was just kidding around – trying to get her scared before it was really dark. That way he could set the mood for telling ghost stories around the campfire, just like they did when they were kids. “Yeah, good try, hon. You aren't going to scare me. That perfume is my bug spray. C'mon, get those marshmallows out.

This is going to be fun.”

Since he didn't hear anything else, he shrugged it off, and got them out as requested. They pulled the log over closer to the fire, and got going. They finally finished them about nine. By then it was getting dark, as the sun had set behind the hills nearly half an hour earlier. It started to cool off too. Surprisingly, the mosquitoes weren't too annoying. The bug spray had kept them at bay so far, to their relief.

They had to admit it really was so peaceful, with the lapping of water along the shoreline. They were glad that they had pulled in before getting too close to the falls, as they now realized it would have been too noisy otherwise. They cuddled together to keep warm, and soon became drowsy.

About eleven they heard the loons calling way off from Bow Lake, they guessed. Then it was the wolves who started to howl off in the distance. At least that is what they thought it was. They were jolted out of their reverie

when they both heard the snapping of twigs behind them. This time Serena had to admit she heard it too. They jumped up, all drowsiness gone now. They were on high alert. What moments ago seemed so blissful, suddenly turned sinister. The flickering fire cast shadows. The sky was dark, despite the stars being out.

There was no moonlight to give them extra light.

Then on the far shore of the river, they suddenly heard what sounded like an owl hooting.

Then they heard a response on their side. It sounded like it was only a few hundred feet away. It sent chills through them. That was it, though. There were no more sounds. It became deathly quiet.

Serena broke the silence.

“We're letting our imagination get the better of us. It was just two owls calling to each other.

The snapping sound was likely a raccoon or fox walking by.

Whatever it was, they are gone now. C'mon, let's go to bed. I'm getting cold. I am looking forward to crawling into my sleeping bag.” Harry thought about the possibility of it being a bear, but didn't say anything to her, as he didn't want to alarm her unnecessarily. He just replied, “Yeah, you're right. I'll be there in a moment. I have to pee.

Hand me the flashlight, please.

I need to check that the canoe is tied down ok too. Don't want to wake up tomorrow and find it floating down the river. It would be a long trip back to our vehicle, now, wouldn't it.” She replied, “Well, hurry up. I don't want to be in here alone for too long.”

She gave him the flashlight, and watched him head into the bush to relieve himself. She went in to the tent, and crawled into her sleeping bag. She settled down, waiting for him to return.

Half an hour later he still hadn't returned. She became scared, thinking the worst. She didn't want to leave the safety and comfort of the tent, but wanted to find out what was keeping him. She finally got up the courage to poke her head out. She called to him. She called several more times without getting a response. Reluctantly she went outside. It was dark, and the only glimmer of light came from the embers of the fire. Her eyes soon became accustomed to the dark, and she could see a little farther around. She became terrified as she looked towards the bush. It was so dark and ominous.

She backed away towards the river to see if Harry was still there. She stopped short as she got up to it. She saw him lying face down in the water of the river. She scrambled over to him, and shook him. She then turned him over, and dragged him out of the water. She freaked out, and it took all her willpower to calm herself down, before beginning mouth to mouth resuscitation. To her relief, he finally coughed once, and spewed out the water from his lungs. He roused himself, and began a real coughing spell. Then he rubbed the back of his head. He cried out, “Ouch. I have a lump on my head. Someone hit me as I was turning the canoe over. The last thing I remember was the whiff of that strange musky perfume smell that I noticed earlier.” He paused. “Oh, yeah, I remember a voice growling in my left ear, warning me to leave this 'sacred place'. That was just as I lost consciousness. At least I think I heard that. Maybe I didn't. I'm not sure now. My head is aching too much.” He had another

coughing spell. Once he had recovered she forced him to get up, and they headed back to their tent. She got him inside, and into his sleeping bag. She turned to her own, and jumped as she screamed. Laying on the top of her bag by her pillow was a piece of birch bark.

Scrawled in red ink – or was it blood? - was a dire warning : LEAVE THIS SACRED PLACE TONIGHT OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES. She wasn't sure which rattled her more – the note, or the fact that someone had been in their tent while she was at the canoe with Harry. She was about to ask him what they should do when she stopped. He had already settled down, and had his eyes closed. She decided to ignore the warning. She would have to stay awake all night now, to keep vigilant. She knew that he was in no condition to be paddling down the river, and there was no way she was going to do that either, in the dark. No, they would leave first thing in the morning, she decided. She never gave any thought to concussion, and keeping him awake.

She tried to keep awake, but finally slipped into a fitful sleep.

She awoke with a start a while later to the smell of smoke. She suddenly realized the tent was on fire. It was blazing brightest right at the zippered entrance.

She was immediately wide awake, and went into action. She woke Harry, got him out of his sleeping bag, and despite him being groggy still, she managed to push him through the flaming entrance. She plunged out right after him. Just then the tent became totally engulfed in flames, and before long had disintegrated into nothing but ashes.

Then she took stock, and began looking around. She realized that it was nearly dawn, as the sky was faintly visible. She checked her watch, and saw it was five in the morning.

To her shock and horror, she heard rustling coming out from the bushes. She quickly turned around to face the sound. Like a ghostly apparition, two figures emerged, dressed in black clothes, with black hoods covering their faces. They approached her as she was kneeling beside Harry. She grabbed his hand as he lay on the ground, still too groggy to be aware of what was happening.

She noticed the perfume smell too, just like Harry had told her yesterday. It was emanating from them. They got about ten feet away from them before abruptly stopping. They had their faces painted too, so she couldn't make out any features. She did notice the silver pendant around their necks dangling on top of the black garb. It looked like a black coloured eagle inlaid on top of the silver. It was quite distinctive. Normally she would have thought that it was a lovely piece of jewelry – but not right now. The taller person began to talk in a deep voice.

“We warned you. This is sacred ground. We asked you to leave, but you ignored us. We have no choice but to force you out now.

So get in your canoe, and head back to where you came from.”

They spread their legs apart, and crossed their arms. It was all a very threatening pose, she admitted. She also decided that she wasn't going to argue with them. She just told them that she was going, and for them to keep calm, as she roused Harry, and got him to hobble down to the

canoe. She got it tipped upright, found the paddles, and pulled it to the river's edge. She got him laying down in the centre, as she began to paddle from the rear position. She hated to leave all their supplies, and especially her camera, but it was enough to just get away. Then she realized they would have been all burnt up inside the tent. She paddled out to the middle of the river, and just as they began to move downstream, she glanced back to see if they were watching her.

However, they had disappeared.

Her adrenalin kicked in. She worked her arms hard and they made good progress. Finally in mid-afternoon of that Sunday, they reached the access point.

They had not eaten all day, and were shaky as they climbed out.

It took a real effort to get their canoe hoisted back onto the roof racks. Before they left, Serena saw that black sedan was still parked there. In her mind, she suddenly thought – black outfits, black vehicle. Any connection? Just for curiosity she went over for a closer look. The side and back windows were tinted heavily, so she couldn't see in.

But as she got to the hood, she looked up into the front window, which was not tinted. She was startled to see dangling from the rear view mirror a silver pendant with an eagle engraved on it. She blinked in disbelief. It was identical to the one those two black figures were wearing!

With quick thinking, she copied down the license plate number.

She debated whether to wait and confront them when they came back to their vehicle. But then she realized that she had no idea when they might return. Likely not until tomorrow, she guessed.

So she decided to find the police, and have them accompany them back to the parking lot. However, by the time she found the station, and persuaded them to let them come back too, it was gone. Fortunately, the license plate offered them the information they needed to track them down. On the holiday Monday, the police met with them. They were surprised to discover that one of them was the kid of their neighbour who had told them about this waterfall in the first place. Apparently he was unaware his teen was in this cult, and did not know about what was going on at the waterfall.

The other one lived just around the corner from them.

They were part of a teenage cult operating in town that promoted a 'back to nature doctrine'.

They considered the waterfall to be their 'holy ground'. They were 'warriors' opposed to the rumoured building of a dam near the waterfalls. This was the first time anyone had disturbed them there. Serena and Harry just happened to be the unfortunate couple who picked the wrong spot to camp – wrong time, wrong place! They were charged with arson, threatening death, break-and-enter (to their tent), and attempted murder.

Later after the waterfall area was searched, they were also charged with drug and underage liquor possession. A stash of LSD and empty smashed beer and liquor bottles were found inside a makeshift building.

The whole incident sure wrecked their long weekend.

The rest of the holiday Monday was spent trying to cope with the ordeal. By the way, it took a long time before they went camping again.

NWMO Transportation Exhibit in Manitouwadge

Article and Photo by: Lynn Cregheur The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) was at the Community Center in Manitouwadge the past weekend to meet with residents and answer questions about the $22 billion dollar national

infrastructure project to store Canada’s used nuclear fuel.

Patrick Dolcetti, NWMO Regional Communication Manager, spoke about the transportation exhibit which was on display. The exhibit has have been to Manitouwadge three times over the last few years. It shows the people the

container that will be used to transport used nuclear fuel bundles form where they are currently stored. These are dry storage facilities, at the big reactor sites in Southwestern Ontario, Pickering, Bruce and Darlington. Eventually, they will be moved to a deep geological repository site. There

to one of the nine communities as a study area by 2023.

In order to be successful, the project has to be a fit for the area. It is not just a community that will be involved.

Aboriginal and Métis communities and other surrounding communities will also be involved. The NWMO are currently also working on regional engagement in areas around the nine communities.

On the exhibit, you were able to see the 24 ton’ steel container that holds, about 4 tons of fuel which is about 200 bundles. A 4-ton steel lid is secured with 32 bolt, each bolt weighs about 14 pounds and finally covered with a giant impact limiter.

This container will likely be moved by road and or rail, depending on where the site will be. The exhibit gives people the opportunity a handson experience and to see how robust and strong these containers are and the rigid process and testing, they have to go through in order to meet safety standards set by the regulator.

There are nine communities in the process right now; Manitouwadge, White River, Hornepayne, Ignace, Elliot Lake, Blind River and three others in Southwestern Ontario: Central Huron, Huron-Kinloss and south Bruce. The NWMO say that for planning purpose and timelines, the facility may be built and operational by 2040/2045. More immediately, they are hoping to be down

The Wawa Family Health Team (WFHT) Mission: “The Wawa Family Health Team will work to provide preventive care and disease management, and to promote healthy lifestyles, through an integrated and coordinated team of dedicated health care professionals.”

Family Health Teams play a critical role in helping to change both the health care system and the way people think about health care. Since April 2005, the Ontario government has approved 200 Family Health Teams and Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics across the province. The Wawa Family Health Team is one of 27 Family Health Teams in North Eastern Ontario, with 5 family physicians serving Wawa and Area.

The goals of the Family Health Team are: • Better care for patients and better outcomes for populations of patients; • A better patient experience evidenced by shorter wait times and more involvement in their own care; • A better provider experience resulting in a more work-life balance and improved ability to attract and retain clinical providers of all stripes in primary care; • Greater system efficiency resulting in sustainability of our part of the health care system.

The Board of Directors is comprised of 5 physicians, a Nurse Practitioner and a community volunteer.

Your Key Tasks: • Plan and coordinate all planned maintenance activities performed at site.

• Manage the work order management system to minimize interruptions for the continuous operation of the mill.

• Receive work order requests through CMMS and validate all work orders by determining job needs and prioritizing.

• Develop detailed repair plans by conducting field inspections, utilizing standard work plans or technical documentation and/or collaborate with all other personnel or contractors to properly resource all routine work orders.

• Must have the ability to identify recommendations and or areas for improvement.

You have the following qualifications: • Certified maintenance journeyperson with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in an industrial planner/scheduler position.

• Grade 12 diploma or equivalent and, post-secondary education in a maintenance related field is preferred.

Must have knowledge and experience in the use of a CMMS (Computerized • Maintenance System).

• Prior experience with maintenance planning and scheduling is preferred.

• Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of equipment maintenance practices, preferably in the manufacturing industry.

• Strong MS office skills; Word and Excel are required.

• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and planning skills.

Police Make Arrest In Rash Of Thefts From Vehicles (WAWA, ON) – On Tuesday July 12, 2016 members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were advised of numerous thefts from motor vehicles in the Wawa area. Taken during these incidents were various items such as money, cell phones, credit cards, GPS unit, keys and luggage. The person responsible was able to gain entry to all motor

vehicles as they were left unlocked.

Investigation conducted and evidence gathered by police led to the arrest of a male suspect.

As a result Daniel LINKLATER (27) of Saskatoon Saskatchewan was arrested and charged with the following offences; • 3 Counts of Adult Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 contrary to section 355(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada, • 2 Counts of Adult Fail to Comply with Undertaking contrary to section 145(3) of the CCC, • Adult Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon contrary to section 91(2) of the CCC.

The accused was transported to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario for a Bail Hearing.

Superior East (Wawa) Opp Seek Public Assistance In Solving A Break And Enter (WAWA, ON) – On Sunday July 10, 2016 at approximately 10:10 pm officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment were advised of a Break and Enter and mischief incident which had taken place at a Sultan residence. Investigation revealed tha the suspect gained entry to the residence by braking a front window, once inside the

culprit damaged a door and window.

Single Vehicle Rollover Results In Multiple Injuries (WAWA, ON) – On Sunday July 10, 2016 at approximately 2:40 pm, members of the Superior East Wawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a single motor vehicle rollover on Highway 17 near the Crescent Lake in the Peever Township.

Officers attended the scene and confirmed there were multiple injuries to the driver and passengers.

The driver was airlifted with the assistance of Orange with undetermined injuries.

The collision was investigated by officers from the Wawa OPP Detachment and with the assistance of the Technical Traffic Collision

Police Charge Wawa Man With Assault 2016-07-12 (WAWA, ON) – On Saturday July 9, 2016 at approximately 1:38 pm members of the Superior East Wawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a Wawa residence regarding a disturbance.

At the scene officers interviewed several witnesses and determined that a female had been assaulted by a male.

As a result a 39 years old Wawa man was charged with the following offence; • Adult- Assault Spousal contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was transported to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario for bail hearing.
