Create A Logo & Market Your Thoughts Créez Un Logo & Vendez Vos Idées

Earlier this spring, the Superior East CFDC in partnership with the Northern Ontario Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative delivered two youth entrepreneurship programs called “Create a Logo” and “Market Your Thoughts”. The programs are designed for students in grades 3 to 8 to help promote entrepreneurship.

The Create a Logo program asks students in grades 3 to 6 to design a logo for a business.

For Market Your Thoughts, the grade 7 & 8 students are asked to write an essay on a business they would like to establish. All schools within the region were invited to participate. The entries are judged by local individuals to determine the winners. The winners were then forwarded to the Northern Regional level for a chance to win $100. Now that the competition has ended, the Superior East CFDC staff awarded certificates to the 92 students who participated in the two programs and a total of 20 winners within our region.

The winners received a cheque for $25 and were also presented with a t-shirt.

Au printemps dernier, la SADC Supérieur Est ainsi que l’Initiative Entreprenariat Jeunesse du Nord ont à nouveau présenté deux programmes d’entreprenariat intitulés ‘‘Créez un logo’’ et ‘‘Vendez vos idées’’. Ces programmes sont conçus pour les élèves de la 3e à la 8e année à faire un lien à l’entreprenariat.

Le programme Créez un logo invite les élèves de la 3e à la 6e année à concevoir un logo pour une entreprise. Le programme Vendez vos idées invite les élèves de la 7e et 8e année à rédiger une dissertation sur une entreprise qu’ils aimeraient établir. Toutes les écoles de la région avaient l’opportunité d’y participer. Tous les projets soumis sont jugés par des personnes locales afin de déterminer les gagnants. Les projets gagnants furent ensuite transmis à la compétition régionale pour une chance de gagner 100 $. Maintenant terminé, le personnel de la SADC Supérieur Est s’est vu présenté 92 certificats de participation et un total de 20 gagnants se sont mérités des prix en argents. Les

lauréats ont reçu un chèque de 25$ et un t-shirt.

Men Like Louis Wanted!

North East LHIN Encourages Fellow Northerners To Take Part In LHIN-Funded Exercise Classes That Help To Prevent Falls And Stay Healthy July 28, 2016 – Louis Demers is doing his very best to avoid becoming one of the approximately 1,200 older adults hospitalized every year in Northeastern Ontario as a result of a fall.

He’s participating in close to 300 free exercise programs funded by the North East Local Health Integration (NE LHIN) and offered in communities across the North.

Louis has joined in exercise classes at two North Bay locations. As he has limited mobility and walks with a cane, instructors have adapted the classes to accommodate him.

“I feel good when I come out of there,” says Louis, 65.

“People with limited mobility, like me, likely think they can’t be in it, but they can do a lot sitting down.”

Across the North East LHIN region, Louis is one of more than 2,000 seniors who took classes in the past year.

He’s noticed that he’s one of the few men taking these free classes, and he encourages others to join – both men and women.

Exercise was never a need for Louis during his years as a high steel construction worker – working up 51 stories at times. Following a series of small strokes in recent years, he’s found the classes have helped improve his hand-eye coordination, balance, and even his ability to put thoughts together to communicate. He also likes the opportunity to meet new people.

Compared to the province, the NE LHIN region has higher rates of emergency department visits and hospitalizations due to falls among people aged 65-plus. That’s why a fall prevention strategy known as Stay on Your Feet (SOYF) was launched across the NE LHIN last year. It’s a large-scale effort delivered in a partnership between the NE LHIN and the region’s five Public Health Units, along with other health service providers and older adults.

Wawa Goose Seniors Club News: Goose Droppings Summer at the Drop In is usually a rather routine affair: the usual weekly occurrences of puzzles, cards, bridge and mah jongg. Disruptions are usually caused by vacations, visitors and berry picking excursions. The Drop In is still here and open from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. every weekday afternoon. Sometimes someone shares that dessert which really is much better with friends.

However, this summer has seen a couple of events beyond the regular. In July we held the “Pay What you Want” Yard Sale and the Sausage BBQue on a Saturday during the Music Festival. We saw some friends, had some interested customers, and raised some money for the rent. The left overs from the Yard Sale got sent to the United Church for their Thrift Shop or the new business on Broadway,

the Thrift Store. Slowly but surely the Back Room is getting emptier, ready for some different uses to develop.

Friday, August 5 will see another unusual summer activity at the Drop In. Have you got a ticket yet for the Ladies Bunco Night? The fun starts at 7:00 p.m. Rolling the dice is a hoot, with an edge of excitement as gambling always has. There is laughter with the hostess with the “comedic mostest” who shares her jokes, and seeks yours. There are prizes of course: gamblers definitely win, just not all the time. And there is dessert with decaf beverage.

Northern Ontario Angels Rank 1st In Canada For Investment Deals Totaling $50 Million THUNDER BAY, ON JULY 28, 2016 - Northern Ontario Angels (NOA); a not for profit corporation that facilitates business deals between entrepreneurs and accredited angel investors, ranks 1st in Canada for the number of investments closed in 2015, it announced today.

With 139 total deals completed, NOA has now achieved $50 million in investment capital flowed to Northern entrepreneurs.

The National Angel Capital Organization’s (NACO) 2015 Report on Angel Investing Activity in Canada looked at 32 angel investment organizations across the country and reveals that angels in Northern Ontario contributed more investment capital into regional entrepreneurs and businesses than any other similar network in Canada. “$50 million signifies an enormous amount of investment capital flowed into our Northern Ontario economy by private investors;" says NOA Executive Director, Mary Long-Irwin.

"NOA is proud to be the number one angel network in Canada but most importantly, we are proud of the increasing economic capacity,

opportunities and impact that angel investing is bringing to the region. Today, investments are being made in diverse sectors from technology and manufacturing to real estate and entertainment.

Almost all of the $50 million comes from local investors, directed to local entrepreneurs, to build local businesses across the North."

Also reported today were some of the results generated by $50 million in investment capital. Key socio-economic impacts are: • 139 investment deals closed totaling $50 million • 1,324 full time equivalent positions created • 378 full time equivalent positions maintained • A total of $91 million in management and staff salaries generated.

INSPECTION Inspection of Approved Aerial Herbicide Spraying Big Pic, Pic River, White River and Nagagami Forests The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invites you to inspect the MNRFapproved aerial herbicide spray project(s). As part of our ongoing efforts to regenerate and protect Ontario’s forests, selected stands on the Big Pic, Pic River, White River and Nagagami Forests (see map) will be sprayed with herbicide to control competing vegetation, starting on or about: August 2, 2016. The herbicide VisionMax (Glyphosate), registration # 27736 will be used.

The approved project description and project plan for the aerial herbicide project is available for public inspection at the Jackfish River Management Ltd. office, the Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation (NFMC), and on the MNRF public website at ontario.ca/forestplans beginning August 2, 2016 until March 31, 2017 when the annual work schedule expires. The Ontario Government Information Centre at the Wawa District Office, 48 Mission Road provides access to the Internet.

Keep Your Summer Free Of Tick Bites

Ontarians Reminded To Lower Their Risk Of Lyme Disease Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and Dr. David Williams, Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health are reminding Ontarians to protect themselves from tick bites while enjoying or working outdoors this summer.

Lyme disease can be serious. If not identified early, infection can lead to recurring arthritis, neurological problems, numbness, and paralysis. Lyme disease is spread to humans through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick.

Tick populations are established in known risk areas throughout the province. In addition, multiple factors are allowing ticks to potentially establish populations in new areas throughout the province.

These factors include climate change, warmer winter temperatures and ticks' ability to "hitch-hike" on suitable hosts, like birds or deer. Ticks live near the ground in woodlands, tall grasses and bushes, and thrive in moist environments, like those found underneath old leaves on the forest floor.

The best way to prevent tick bites include: • Wearing closed-toe shoes, long-sleeved shirts and pants

•

Pulling your socks over your pant legs to prevent ticks from crawling up your legs • Wearing light-coloured clothing to spot ticks more easily • Using insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin on clothing as well as on exposed skin, following the product instructions carefully • Showering or bathing within two hours of being outdoors to remove ticks that can be on your skin but not yet attached • Doing a daily full body check for ticks. Young blacklegged ticks can be as small as a poppy seed, so look carefully. Check children and pets for ticks as well.

• Placing outdoor clothing through the dryer cycle for 60 minutes on high heat before washing to kill any ticks that may be hard to see.

The most commonly known symptom of Lyme disease is an expanding, non-itchy to mildly-itchy skin rash. The rash can begin at the site of the tick bite between three and 30 days after exposure and usually grows in size for several days. Although many people never get or see a rash.

When doing a full body check for ticks, pay close attention to areas such as your scalp, ankles, armpits, groin, naval and behind your ears and knees. Use a mirror to check the back of your body or having someone else check for you.

Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics if diagnosed and treated early. The earlier treatment is received the better.

It would be nice to know which lawsuits have been settled and at what cost to the people of Ontario in taxes and hydro rate increases.

On a another note, Premier Wynne's gas tax at 4.3 cents a litre is actually a 4.9 cents a litre gas tax once she adds HST/GST on top of the 4.3 gas tax. So, if your wondering - yes, she is taxing tax on top of taxes. Once again, this also affects home heating oil. Is this tax to eliminate oil home heating in order to help build up the sale of Hydro One stock?

NUTS ‘N’ BOLTS

Opinions, or observations from an old newsman - by Bob Avis

Willie Nelson, Where Are You? It’s always nice to have visitors at home. Especially overnight visitors. Yet I’ve always wondered why things like that always seem to come in clumps.

Last weekend was a real treat when an old boyfriend of Debra’s came for a visit.

Maybe boyfriend is the wrong term to be using. This fellow was a friend of my wife many moons before I ever met her, while they both attended university back in the dark ages.

Apparently the relationship was entirely platonic. Seems they got along well and bonded in a friendship that has lasted through the years. They remained in touch, mostly by phone, mail and latterly by email. You see, her friend is a resident of a community near Nashville, Tennessee.

Therefore not an easy place to hop over for a visit any evening the fancy hits.

And so, I’ve heard much about Frank Ashe and knew that they maintained communications on a fairly regular basis. I never thought much about it all. I didn’t know the man at all. I had a kind of picture of him in my mind.

I knew Frank was well educated but he lives in Nashville for heaven’s sake. I could see in my mind’s eye a large, rather neat looking man with a full, but well kept beard, dressed in denim and plaid, with maybe a guitar and cowboy boots. He would sound a little like Willie Whatshisface and be perhaps a little bowlegged.

Anyway, I was about to find out because Frank was coming to spend a weekend with

us, his first visit with Debra in nearly twenty years. I waited to see if Debra would invite me to get out of town for the weekend. She didn’t though and I prepared to meet a man I knew nothing about.

I hoped I wouldn’t have too much trouble with his southern accent.

The appointed time arrived and a gleaming black G6 convertible drove into our drive and a lithe business looking man stepped out and hugged my wife. He immediately turned to me and, as though rehearsed, we both said, “I’m so glad to meet you. I’ve heard so much about you”.

And shook hands.

He didn’t look, nor sound a bit like Johnny Cash. He had a light American twang in his voice but otherwise wasn’t much different than me to talk to.

We did some exciting things over the three days he was here. We toured Metropolitan Hawk Junction and visited Woodland Cemetery. We drank a twelve-pack of apple beer in the open door of the garage and ate breakfast at the Embassy Restaurant. We fed chipmunks and petted cats. The fun never stopped!

Frank will have so many exciting memories of Wawa, I’m sure he’ll have to come back. From my point of view it was a great visit. Hope we do it again.

Now, this weekend we’ll have two of Debra’s sisters visiting along with some family. Two sisters-in-law at the same time. I can’t believe my good fortune.

This Time, It's For Our Veterans Veteran solo paddler Mike Ranta set out April 1st on an eight-thousand kilometre solo paddle from Vancouver to Cape Breton.

This is Ranta's third ultramarathon solo. In 2011, he paddled from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, to Montreal, an 18-week retracing of the original Voyageur route. That success encouraged him to try, in 2014, something no one had ever done before: a single season crossing of Canada. Over 30 weeks, he paddled from Vancouver to Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia - from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

He didn't quite achieve his goal; he'd wanted to get to Cape Breton, where he has friends and family. (Although there is no question he crossed the continent - from the Pacific to the Atlantic.)

“I still have that picture in my mind, of paddling into Dominion Beach on a fall day,” he said before setting out this year.

He's also found some new motivation from a combination of sources all related to

Canadian veterans. The passing of his friend and mentor Joe Meany (a veteran of the Korean conflict) was one. His brother, Kevin Meany, is still dealing with the after-effects of his service to the Canadian Forces.

Finally, a range of issues regarding the treatment of Canadian veterans over the past couple of years (the closing of the Veterans Affairs Office closest to his home town of Atikokan, Ontario, was one) caught his attention.

Actually, the idea started to take root during his 2014 trek.

It all crystalized one dreary day on Lake Manitoba. Ranta says it was probably the low point, personally. He'd been dealing with wind and rain, day after day, and was coming to realize he wasn't going to get home to Atikokan for Canada Day. Then a Hercules circled overhead turns out he had some followers and fans at 17 Wing Winnipeg, and they decided to test their mettle during a training run with a precision drop, of a care package (complete with treats for Spitzii, his Finnish Spitz dog and faithful travelling compan-

ion).

“I could hardly believe what I was seeing... it really picked me up.”

During his March farewell to Atikokan, a veteran, Ed Dutka, was the first to sign his trip canoe (a specially-made Souris River canoe), and since then hundreds of veterans from across the country have added their autographs.

“It will be my way - the most Canadian way - of saying thank you to the veterans,” he said.

Whenever time and route permit, Ranta will stow his gear, and take the removable canoe cover (for signatures) with him as he visits Legion Halls on his route.

Thanks to a suggestion from Don Meany, he is planning to build a wreath with elements he comes across as he paddles, and to then place the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa. (He may start on a second wreath to lay in Cape Breton when he leaves Ottawa.)

“Last time, a lot of things hit home with me about those who serve our country... We wouldn't be what we are with-

out them...”

Ranta travels with his “best friend”, his dog Spitzii (a Finnish Spitz), but otherwise this really is a solo, in every sense of the word. Ranta does not rely on a ground-support team although occasionally friends along the way do help out, putting him up for a night or making a supply run. When time permits, he will drop a line in the water, or forage the wilderness.

And when conditions get hostile he hunkers down (as has had to do several times on Lake Superior in both 2011 and 2014) or finds a new route (as in did in Manitoba in 2011, when he reached that province at the height of Red River flooding).

Solo paddles of this magnitude test a paddler's resourcefulness, determination, and fitness. The only thing Ranta loves more than the challenge is the sense of oneness with the world he experiences as he is paddling.

Ranta grew up in Atikokan, Canada's Canoeing Capital, and has been paddling Quetico Provincial Park - Ontario's

largest wilderness park - since being part of the Atikokan High School Outers program, a fullcredit grade 11 outdoor adventure course that culminates in a 12-day canoe trek through the wilderness every June.

(Ranta participated in 1987-88; Outers enters its 50 year as an accredited course at AHS this September.)

He's garrulous, and quite direct about the spirit he takes onto the water, or just about any endeavour: Stay positive, never give up and don't be afraid of failure.

Atikokan Youth Initiatives, which operates the teen centre in Atikokan, is one of Ranta's partners on the trip. (He raised $10,000 for them in 2014.) It and the Royal Canadian Legion (Atikokan branch) will share any of the proceeds this crossing produces.

Ontario Investing An Additional $100 Million This Year In Home And Community Care, $5.6 Million To Go To North East Province Increasing Access To Home Care For Those With High Needs Ontario is investing approximately $100 million this year to enhance support for home care clients with high needs and their caregivers.

This investment will help clients and caregivers most in need, including $80 million for enhanced home care and $20 million for caregiver respite.

Home care patients and those who care for them will benefit from approximately: • 350,000 additional hours of nursing care • 1.3 million additional hours of personal support • 600,000 additional hours of respite services for caregivers • 100,000 additional hours of rehabilitation.

Of the total investment, the North East Region will receive approximately $5.6 million this year to enhance support for home care clients and their caregivers.

• $4,476,400 for expanding services for high-needs clients. These individu-

als will receive care that includes nursing, personal support and, therapy services (for example, physiotherapy and occupational therapy).

• $1,119,100 for caregiver respite. In-home respite support includes personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming), and medication assistance so that caregivers can ideally take some time for themselves.

This additional funding is part of Ontario’s 2015 Budget commitment to increase investments in home and community care by more than $750 million over three years. These initiatives support the commitments made in "Patients First: A Roadmap to Strengthen Home and Community Care", the province’s plan to improve and expand home and community care.

The News: Brought To You By ISIL Say what you like about terrorists. Call them an infestation of lunatics, monsters, cowardly two-legged maggots unworthy of membership in the human race – say what you will...

But you have to concede that they play our media like Charles Dutoit conducting the Montreal Symphony.

So simple! Just strap an impressionable teenage dupe into a suicide vest, send him or her into a cafe or a marketplace and BOOM! -- instant headlines , endless footage of smoking ruins, screaming sirens and wailing survivors, platoons of goggle-eyed TV talking heads jabbering into news cameras all around the globe. And it's not just robe-clad fanatics with unpronounceable names.

Now we've got copycat crazies with names like Anders and Phillip and David. These clones don't even require a suicide vest. They come (in the U.S. at least) equipped with their own utterly legal assault weapons.

No overhead! Perfect! Trump couldn't attract that kind of coverage.

Bin Laden must be chortling in Hell.

And what is the one musthave thing that all these human nightmares share in common?

Not ideology. Not patriotism.

It's attention. They need our attention like a forest fire needs oxygen. Free publicity is WHY these cockroaches do what they do.

Here's a 'what if' to chew on.

What if we didn't give them that oxygen? What if we relegated news coverage of terrorist attacks to page eight, say, with no photos, just barebones acknowledgement of damage done, lives lost and – most important – no names

of individuals or organizations claiming 'credit'?

What if we treated these events less a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, more like a factual story about cancer or traffic fatalities?

Today the media is like a demented uncle descending from the attic to tug at our sleeves and whisper “Be afraid!

Be very afraid!”

A friend recently wrote this to me: “The events of the last few weeks have left all of us reeling and questioning the nature of man. Our 24-hour news media constantly streams violent acts across the globe and devotes its extensive power focusing on our divisiveness rather than our commonalities.

Although we actually live in the least violent era of mankind we are made to believe that the vicious cycle of violence will never end.

What if the news media HAD to show one act of kindness for every act of violence it showed? How might that change our views about the world?”

How indeed. I know a doctor who says the best thing you can do this very moment for your mental health is: • cut down on alcohol • ramp up on exercise • stop reading or watching the news.

Mind you, if the news was more balanced we wouldn't have to stop watching it.

2016 ATV Jamboree in Manitouwadge The Manitouwadge Economic Development Corporation 2016 ATV Jamboree was sold out in three weeks this year, with 80 bikes registered and 103 people involved.

The trail itself was longer than last year with some tricky spots and the length was approximately 170 km.

The weather cooperated with it being beautiful the only obstacle was the dust on the trails. Some people arrived at the banquet totally white faced and covered in dust but it did not deter from the good times.

The event saw some return riders but a good percentage of new people. We had bikes

come from as far as Michigan and Manitoba.

We also had some new entries from Thunder Bay and saw Jones Power Sports from Wawa attend. The Committee is looking forward to planning the 2017 ATV Jamboree, bigger and better.

5 Ways To Say Goodbye To Your "Sad Desk Lunch" (BPT) - You're running out the door, already late and thinking about that important 8 a.m. meeting. Lunch is the last thing on your mind.

In fact, you usually just pick something up from the deli line or local fast food place and hurry back to your desk.

Sound familiar? You're not alone. Only one in five people actually ditch their desks during their lunch hour.

When you feel your stomach growl, it's all too easy to grab something from the vending machine or - if you remember - to pack a cold turkey sandwich. But there are plenty of easy ways to spice up your lunchtime routine at work.

Here are some tips to improve your mediocre midday meal: 1. Walk away from your desk.

Do you eat at your desk every day? You have a lunch break for a reason; so use it.

You're busy and need a few minutes to recharge throughout the day. You'll come back refreshed and ready to be productive for the rest of the afternoon. Eating at your desk also means you're probably multi-tasking, not paying attention to your food.

Leaving your desk will help you become a more mindful eater and you'll enjoy your meal more. Take a walk, socialize with coworkers, do something that gets you up and moving for at least 15 minutes.

2. Bake up a batch of healthy chips.

Step away from the snack machine. You don't need those stale potato chips.

You can bake your own with only six ingredients. Thickly slice two pounds of potatoes and coat them with olive oil and one tablespoon of salt.

Season with cayenne and ground pepper. Arrange the slices on a greased baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes until potatoes are crisp and golden brown.

Then, spread them out on parchment paper, sprinkle with salt and enjoy. Pack a handful of chips in your lunch each day for more crunch and less guilt.

3. Stray from the PB and J. Peanut butter and jelly might be a staple, but it's time for a grown-up work lunch.

You can find sandwich fixings that are not only easy and quick, but take your lunch

to the next level. Try a gourmet chicken salad like the nomayo Avocado Chicken Salad from Willow Tree Farm. The Bomb Scare Talk about being at the wrong place at the wrong time. That was me on this Sunday, July 31, 2016. I was just passing through Wawa on my way back home in Toronto, after attending a funeral for my grandfather in Thunder Bay last Thursday. I had stopped about 8:00 p.m. at your Wawa Goose for a rest before I headed out to the Soo. I had been standing on the west side of the Tourist Centre, looking out over the bluff, taking in the view of the hills, the river, and the highway heading to Thunder Bay, which I had just drove on. From there I headed over to get a photo, like everyone does who passes by, right!

Just as I reached the corner of the building I saw two men standing by the Goose.

I stopped dead in my tracks.

It was their appearance. They were dark skinned and had messy black hair. Of course I immediately jumped to the conclusion that they must be ISIS terrorists. I know that I should not have done that, but in this day and age, with all that's going on in the Middle East and indeed the whole world it is a natural assumption, isn't it? But who knows? Maybe they were just students heading to school?

One of them was tall and lanky. The other one was shorter, with a slender build.

In my initial quick look, I guessed they were both in their early twenties.

The other reason I stopped was that I noticed their nervous glances as they huddled over what appeared to be two backpacks.

Then I heard them talking in a foreign accent that was very hard for me to understand. But what I did hear sent shivers down my spine.

The shorter one said: “Why did you change from name to Andy Barton? After all your name is Aswan el-Barada. You should be proud to use it. It is a beautiful name.”

He replied: “Amir Alakewa, your name is beautiful too.

I am glad you are keeping it.

For me as your cell leader, I needed to change my name to blend in with the Western lifestyle. Fortunately for you, the success of the operation is not dependent on that. I don't mean to demean you or your importance to what we have to do. It's just the way it is. Your role as a 'gopher', to use a Western slang, is just as important as mine or the rest of our cell. You are our deflector of the authorities away from me. They can follow you while you pick up innocent supplies to bring back to your apartment and store them until we need them to assemble our bombs.

You have been a wonderful

mole, and blended in quite well. Your time at McGill University in the electrical engineering program has given you valuable tools we can now use. Your computer skills are also invaluable.”

Amir nodded and thanked him for those kind words.

Then he went on: “Do you think it is wise to set off a bomb here? Is it the best thing to do, now that the operation is coming together so well, and so close to the day of reckoning, praise be to Allah?”

Aswan replied: “Yes, I see your point. However, we need to practice our bomb making and detonation techniques to ensure we are ready for the time we are in Ottawa, and set for September 11th , It seems a waste to just explode one in an empty parking lot or gravel pit, or wherever we can find a place to safely to do it. No, let's blow up this Wawa Goose. It's a symbol of Western decadence. Imagine a silly idol of a goose, no less.

These Western infidels make me laugh sometimes. No, it will be good. We will have destroyed one of their symbols, plus distract the authorities from down south.” Amir seemed to not be assured. He questioned him again: “Are you sure you have the OK for this from your Operational Supervisor?” Aswan seemed annoyed at his authority being questioned. He tersely said: “Yes, I have the freedom to do whatever I deem necessary to ensure the success of the operation. So I have all the authority I need right here.” I saw him point to the one backpack. He finished by saying “So that's the end of this conversation. Let's get on with getting these bombs set up, watching our handiwork go kaboom, and then go back to town for supper.

I have some phone calls to make later at the motel down the road before we go to bed.”

I was paralyzed with fear and horror. I was dismayed to learn that my first instinct was right after all. They were terrorists. I couldn't decide whether to stay and try and stop it myself, or take a chance on running to my car over in the parking lot without being seen or stopped.

Of all the times, why couldn't there be a tourist or somebody come in to help me out, or scare them off, I muttered.

I decided to stay for just a bit longer anyway. I wanted to memorize their features, so I could give a detailed description to the police. Also, they were huddled together, with their back to me. I watched in amazement at their skill, plus the simple everyday products they were using to get these bombs set up. That was also

the moment when I poked my head around the corner of the building and took their picture. I knew that would help too for later, in identifying them. I just hoped they wouldn't hear the click, or look my way. But it turned out okay.

Shortly, I heard them discussing the timer part, and how long it should be. Amir suggested one minute would be enough. Aswan was more cautious. He suggested 15 minutes would be better, as that would give them more time to get in position to watch the explosion from afar. Amir countered that it would be too long, as tourists might come in and discover it, and hand it over to the bomb experts. He went on to remind Aswan about those bomber brothers in Boston at the Marathon race back a couple of years ago, and how people are more suspicious of these sort of backpacks just laying around, unclaimed.

They compromised on a 10 minute time delay. Then it appeared to be set up and activated. Aswan tucked it up on the pedestal under the Goose where it would not be noticed easily.

Then Aswan said: “Now let's get the other one set up with the remote detonator.

That is your department.

Away you go. Do your magic.”

He replied: “My, aren't you getting Westernized – such cute expressions!” He went to work. I looked at my watch, and timed him. He had it set up in 8 minutes, and placed up beside the first one. That left me only 2 minutes to have them leave and me to get the two bombs away from the statue and thrown down the gully. I prayed Aswan didn't set off his remote bomb until he heard the first one go off.

I heard Aswan say: “Good, let's get back to the car, and watch what happens.” I ducked back away from the corner of the Tourist Centre building and pressed myself against the wall. I hoped they didn't see me. I waited a few seconds and was relieved that they did not come that way.

So I dashed to the other end of the building to see if I could see them get to their car. On the way, I tried the door to the Centre, but found out it was locked, and no one was inside. Yes, they did. It was parked in the first spot by the sidewalk to the Centre.

Unfortunately my car was parked further away, and this would make it impossible to reach now. To my bad luck, this Aswan guy was just getting in the driver's side, when he glanced my way. He yelled to Amir that they had a witness, as he pointed right at me. I made a quick mental note that it was a nondescript cherry red four-door sedan that could have been a Toyota Camry maybe, as I bolted back along the walkway towards the goose. My camera was still around my neck, but it was turned off by then, and I did not have a chance to get another photo of them

or their car. Unfortunately I didn't get to read the license plate. I knew that I had to get those bombs away from the Goose. I only hoped that I would get there first before either of them went off, or the two of them got to me.

However, I underestimated the height of the pad. It was taller than I was, and I saw that I was going to have to jump up just to get my hands on top of the base, and hoist myself up onto it. I leaped up okay and was just getting myself hoisted up when the two of them arrived, and grabbed my legs and pulled me down. We ended up in a pile. In the ensuing struggle, Amir got free and leaped onto the base successfully, and grabbed his backpacks. He jumped back to the ground.

Aswan and I both gasped as he landed. We were afraid the jarring would trigger the bombs to go off on their own.

I lost track of the time left, but suspected it could only be seconds. I braced myself for the blast. But nothing happened, thank goodness!

Amir declared. “I don't know why it didn't go off.

We'll have to check it out back at the room. We have to double check our circuits to be sure they are correct. C'mon, let's get out of here.” Aswan called out to him as he started to head back to their car: “Wait. We have to do something with this guy. He has seen us and knows what we are up to.” At that moment, I noticed the subtle shift of power over to Amir. He stated: “Well, we can bash his head in on this base until he is dead. Or how about beheading him? That is a perfect calling card, for sure. But we can't decide here and now. We will have to bring him with us. Get that camera off his neck too. We need to destroy it, in case he took our picture.” I was panic stricken at this talk. I knew if I ever got into that car, I would die a painful death. It was the talk of the beheading that terrified me the most. An impulsive thought entered my head: why did I not just run?

I could have been safe, and maybe have gotten help out here before the bombs went off. Why did I want to be the hero to stop them? Then another different jolt: Yes, I did stop the bombing. Then came the realization that it was not really me that saved the Goose, but that their wiring or something they did was what stopped the bombs from going off. I had no more time for thinking.

I just had a moment before I saw the one backpack being swung at the side of my head.

It stunned me into a momentary paralysis. It made it a lot easier for them to drag me to their car, along with their 2 bombs. They dropped me to the ground by the back of the car while they got the trunk open. Amir gently put the bombs in the back seat.

Aswan yanked the camera off my neck and threw it in the trunk. I knew I was next.

That would be the end of me if I let that happen. So I mustered all my strength into a burst of energy – that fight or flight reaction. I jumped up and made a beeline for my car. I clicked my remote, and set off the alarm. I hated that piercing noise normally when I would accidentally trigger it off in a parking lot. Tonight, it was the most beautiful sound in the world. It also brought me luck. Just then an OPP cruiser was driving by. He heard the noise, and saw my frantic waving. He pulled in the one entrance and stopped beside me. I pointed to the car fleeing out of the other driveway, and quickly told them who they were and what they were up to, and that they had my camera with photos of them that would have helped in their identification. He told me to go to the station and give the officer there all the details that I could remember. He headed out with flashing lights, and turned at the intersection of Highway 17, going south, in hot pursuit.

My head began to throb severely, but I went to the station. Once I began my story, I began to shake, and had to make a mad dash to the washroom to throw up.

Nerves, shock, and being hit on the side of the head caused it, I guessed. Anyway, after that I felt better, except for the headache that was beginning to really pound against my temples. I settled down to continue reporting about my harrowing experience. Just then there was a real flurry of radio activity in the background. But I heard the dreaded news in one transmission that he had lost them. It was dark by then, so I was not too surprised at that. Then I heard the radio operator call for the Sault Ste. Marie detachment to be on the alert.

Eventually I was able to finish my statement. I told them about remembering that they had said they were staying at a motel south of town. They began checking those, but found no one at any of them.

They had slipped away. I finally got out of there. It was now my turn to get a motel room, but in town, as it was late, and I was in no shape to drive anymore this night.

I don't know how those guys could have disappeared so easily, but they were resourceful, so it is not too surprising, I guess. I sure hope they find them, though, because I want my camera back. There are lots of family photos on it that I took at the funeral. But also I hope they catch them before they get those bombs fixed, and have a chance to detonate them next month, unless they do it before then.

This is my story that I have told in an interview to one of the reporters of your local paper, The Algoma News Review, on Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

On Being Alone

I Love being alone. I have lived on my own and alone for many years, decades actually.

Did I choose a lifetime of living alone? No, not consciously, I was just following my Path. There were some rocky roads and deep, dark valleys, but also mountain tops, amazing vistas, and beautiful lakes, rivers and oceans.

What an incredible planet we inhabit.

“How do you handle being alone? Do you feel like you need people around you with whom you can converse and enjoy interesting experiences? Or do you crave time alone? Do you enjoy silence and would rather be walking alone in the woods with just your own thoughts? Are you even comfortable with your own thoughts, or do you try to crowd them out with busyness or distractions like TV if

there is no one else near you?” asks blogger Ted Murray.

From my perspective, I have learned that we are all ’alone’ as we navigate our journey to completion. I remember craving ‘aloneness’ in the midst of crowds with the chaos and confusion boggling my mind. Actually this still happens to me. I once felt it was an ‘Aging’ thing, but no, I no longer believe that.

There are those persons who thrive on this ‘confusion’ and two of my children are such persons. The other two are more like myself. They craved their time alone.

Now, loneliness is another story. For this Spiritual Being Living the Human Experience, I remember at times feeling so lonely and bereft. Still happens periodically. However, through the Grace of God, I’ve learned that loneliness is

a result of the feeling of being separate from God. It is so easy to allow my humanness to forget that with one deep breath, I no longer need feel lonely. Maybe that is just too darn easy. Another way to overcome this feeling, even when I’m truly are alone, is to recognize the oneness that is shared by all.

Wow. What a topic Murray asks his readers to consider.

“Can you connect energetically with others, even when not with them physically?”

Yes, I can. And I do this often.

What a gift. And I can also connect energetically with my beloved daughter who made her transition eighteen years ago. And she invariably responds beautifully.

“Do you sense your eternal connection to the cosmos and to the creator of it all?” Absolutely! And my daily Qigong practice brings me totally connected to the Oneness of all that is. When I feel this connection of Oneness I never feel lonely, no matter where I am on the full spectrum of Life.

early in the morning. This Friday morning was incredibly beautiful: Full sunshine, a soft breeze, birds soaring and Wawa Lake in all her glory.

And while out for my walk I sauntered over to the Lion’s beachfront garden to check out if it needed water. Yes, it did, so followed up with watering the garden. In the meantime, I met people from British Columbia, others from southern Ontario who just marveled at the beauty of this small park, we get to enjoy on a daily basis. It is truly a Gift.

And so, Life is filled with opportunities to be Alone or if we wish to be lonely. Yes, we do choose being lonely when we question our connection to God. I Love this quote by Paul Tillich. “Language... has created the word 'loneliness' to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word 'solitude' to express the glory of being alone.” For me, Being Alone is not painful, but rather an amazing glorified Gift. I am so grateful. ‘til next time…this is Joan

BLAKE, Charles It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Charles on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Maple View Extendicare Nursing Home at the age of 75. Loving husband of Lynda.

Cherished son of the late Charles Weldon and Aldine Blake of West Frankfort, Illinois. Beloved son-inlaw of the late Celinda and Richard Fiacconi of Sault Ste. Marie. The Wawa Family Health Team (WFHT) Mission: “The Wawa Family Health Team will work to provide preventive care and disease management, and to promote healthy lifestyles, through an integrated and coordinated team of dedicated health care professionals.”

Family Health Teams play a critical role in helping to change both the health care system and the way people think about health care. Since April 2005, the Ontario government has approved 200 Family Health Teams and Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics across the province. The Wawa Family Health Team is one of 27 Family Health Teams in North Eastern Ontario, with 5 family physicians serving Wawa and Area.

The goals of the Family Health Team are: • Better care for patients and better outcomes for populations of patients; • A better patient experience evidenced by shorter wait times and more involvement in their own care; • A better provider experience resulting in a more work-life balance and improved ability to attract and retain clinical providers of all stripes in primary care; • Greater system efficiency resulting in sustainability of our part of the health care system.

The Board of Directors is comprised of 5 physicians, a Nurse Practitioner and a community volunteer.

Government Of Canada Investment Makes A Big Splash In Nipigon July 29, 2016 – Nipigon, Ontario – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario - FedNor The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Status of Women, and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Superior North, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today congratulated the Township of Nipigon on the grand opening of its splash pad, a new addition to the community’s Paddle to the Sea Park.

The Government of Canada, through FedNor, contributed $66,000 toward the community attraction that will provide a free, accessible area for community residents and visitors alike to cool off

on warm summer days. The funding is provided through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150), which is part of the Government of Canada’s coordinated approach to mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Quick facts • Canada CIP 150 is designed to leave a lasting legacy by supporting the rehabilitation or improvement of existing community infrastructure assets and facilities across the country that promote community and cultural benefits for the public.

• FedNor is delivering this program in Northern Ontario with an allocation of $10.4 million over two years, ending March 31, 2018.

• The Paddle to the Sea

Park, which was completed in 2010 with FedNor support, is based on a children’s book of the same name, chronicling the adventures of a wooden carved man in a canoe once released in Lake Superior. The award-winning book was developed into an Oscar-nominated film produced by the National Film Board in 1966.
