On Saturday, June 23, 2018 the Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation held its 8th annual Summer Wine Tasting Event at the Royal Canadian Legion. All funds raised at this evening will help purchase necessary vital medical equipment for the Lady Dunn Health Centre.

This year, five featured wines and two craft beers were sampled with accompanying appetizers. Tasters were able to compare the wine and the beer using an easy scorecard that guided them through the tasting process.

The top scoring wine of the evening was Lindemans Bin 99 Pinot Noir from Australia

followed by FIOL a Prosecco from Italy.

The Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation would like to thank our wine tasting sponsors Algoma Highlands Wild Blueberries, Algoma Power and Fenlon’s Pharmacy as well as our community supporters John’s Valu-mart and wawa-news.com. Sioux Lookout’s Mayor Doug Lawrance said, “Sioux Lookout is only one of a handful of municipalities in Northwestern Ontario that do not have Natural Gas. This puts us at a competitive disadvantage considering the majority of the community’s tax base is shouldered by the residential tax payers. It is my hope that we can convince the incoming government to reverse this decision for the economic benefit of people in Northern Ontario”.

“On behalf of the Council of the Municipality of Wawa and the Board of Directors of the Economic Development Corporation, I am disappointed that the Wawa Wood Heat Rebate Program has been closed by the incoming government. The response to the program had been strong with 25 applications for assistance received and many more under development. The Wood Heat Rebate program was supporting local business, creating new jobs and building economic development opportunities in Wawa and in all four par-

ticipating communities. I am positive that the incoming government under the leadership of Premier Designate Doug Ford will support the continuation of the wood heat rebate program based on the jobs being created in our economically depressed region of Northern Ontario.

I look forward to speaking to the Premier about the importance of this program to Northern Ontario in the very near future,” said Wawa Mayor Ron Rody.

The program was expected to encourage growth of local and regional economic activity related to biomass in Northern Ontario. Both Sioux Lookout and Wawa have already forged partnerships with businesses and industries to deliver the Wood Heat Rebate Programs.

89 Year Old Tourism Organization Makes Plans For the Decades To Come Nature & Outdoor Tourism Ontario (NOTO) is pleased to announce the launch of a new strategic planning process aimed at growing the organization, working with stakeholders within the tourism industry and providing valueadd services for members. A strong and effective NOTO will address future growth and prosperity for the outdoor tourism sector. The new strategic plan will serve as a roadmap to guide NOTO through sustainable growth while providing innovative ways to meet industry needs.

Tourism Northern Ontario, is a key partner involved in this initiative and will serve as an asset during the overall process.

NOTO has retained Karen Jones Consulting Inc. to facilitate the strategic plan process which recently commenced in April 2018. The initiative will conclude in March 2019 with the aim to engage industry, community leaders and stakeholders to identify gaps and opportunities. NOTO is committed to taking a grassroots approach to identifying

industry needs and assessing ways to foster an organizational culture that is responsive and adaptive to change.

5 Tips To Prepare For College When You Have Allergies

(BPT) Going to college is the first time many young adults will be away from their parents and their home.

With this newfound freedom comes new responsibilities, especially for those with allergies and asthma.

"For most teens, going away to college marks their first time living on their own," says allergist Bradley Chipps, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).

"In addition to moving to a new place, many teens must learn to manage their own schedule, diet, exercise and health. Young people may find their allergies and asthma neglected due to other, seemingly more important demands for their time."

If you or someone in your family has allergies or asthma and is headed off to college this fall, here are five tips from ACAAI on how to prepare for the transition.

1. Make time now to see your allergist - Schedule an appointment with your allergist now to discuss plans for the fall. During this visit you

make your food - If you have a food allergy, plan to talk to food handlers and ask about ingredients at every meal or snack. You probably already carefully read labels, but make sure your friends, roommate and resident adviser know about your food allergies. It's your job to educate others about your allergies.

5. Have an emergency plan - Anyone at risk for a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, needs to always have immediate access to epinephrine auto injectors. Almost every fatality from food allergy involves lack of timely use of epinephrine. Even when you're at the gym or out with friends, find a way to keep two doses of epinephrine on hand.

Allergists are the best trained professionals to diagnose and treat allergies and asthma. To make sure you're fully prepared for the fall, contact your allergist.

We had our last Membership Meeting last week, the Annual Golf Tournament on the 16th was a success & we want to thank all the sponsors, golfers & volunteers for their support.

Thanks to Michelle at the Golf Course for the salad. We had a great day with help from Mother Nature.

The Branch Clubroom will be one of the stages for the

Music Festival – our own Keith & the Goodtimers will be participating – check the schedule & get out & hear some great music & support the Committee, local vendors & businesses.

We will be starting a couple projects at the Branch with renovations to the clubroom washrooms & sewer repairs.

Ontario's online tourism directory, lists thousands of things to do and places to stay in Ontario. While we love to visit museums and attractions, sometimes you just want to do something really fun and exciting. Here are 7 places to get your thrills in Ontario this summer.

People go to the top of the CN Tower to see the views, but now they can do the CN Tower Edgewalk too! Walk around the ledge of the top of the Tower’s main pod on the world’s highest full circle, hands-free walk. It is 116 storeys above the ground. Yikes!

The best way to see Ontario’s gorgeous scenery may be from the treetops. Zip lines take you down mountains, across lakes, canyons and gorges at top speeds strapped into a harness, riding along a cord strapped between towers. It is safe but absolutely thrilling, combining height, speed and outstanding scenery!

Ontario is one of the best places in the world for white water rafting and there are several parts of the province to experience it. Grand River, Gull River, Madawaska, and the Ottawa River are all awesome for rafting, with rapids ranging from family friendly to professional. Most of the places that have rafting also have tour companies with experienced guides, and we’d recommend hiring one as

Canopy Walks are another way to see the province from high in the sky. They provide pedestrian access to the forest canopy, often on boardwalks.

Ontario has one that is half a kilometer long - the longest of its kind in the world 10-20m above the forest floor (Haliburton). You can even have a snack on a platform suspended from the treetops above during your walk!

Put your pedal to the metal.

Car Racing is an excellent way to add some excitement to your day. You can race gokarts at one of Ontario’s many go kart tracks at speeds up to almost 50KPH. This activity offers fun for all ages as some tracks have double seaters so little drivers can have company. Want a little more action?

Attend a Racing Academy at one of North America’s top race schools and drive the 3.957-km circuit where legends of motorsport have raced.

Sometimes you want a little excitement but you want someone else to provide it. How about a visit to one of Ontario’s horse race tracks? Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto has thoroughbred racing, while Kawartha Downs has Harness Racing and Ajax Downs has Quarter Horse Racing. Did you know that many race tracks allow children to watch the races

during live racing only, from 2 hours before the first race until an hour after the last race? They can’t bet obviously, but it is an exciting and fun activity for the whole family!

Nobody Wins A Trade War Trade issues are at a boiling point as the United States instigates disputes across multiple sectors based on the notion of ‘America First’. After just a few weeks, the results have been nothing short of disastrous on both sides of the border. For that reason the House of Commons Trade Committee held an emergency meeting in Ottawa after the Commons had recessed for the summer to help develop a Canadian response. With no immediate solution in place, New Democrats want the committee to focus the government on helping those who will suffer when production drops.

It is clear the government must quickly develop a con-

crete plan to protect the jobs of hundreds of thousands of Canadians who will be caught up in a trade war that makes no economic sense. In the short term that means ensuring EI benefits quickly flow to those facing layoffs so workers are in place when production returns to normal.

In our part of Canada people need look no further than Sault Ste. Marie to see what is at stake. American tariffs levelled against Canadian steel and aluminum producers will cut deeply into the communities and the government will have no choice but to help.

While Canada is planning its own round of dollar-fordollar tariffs, that won’t just punish America. Goods that

flow across the border prop up jobs in Canada too. Tariffs on imports, like American made pleasure boats, are going to cut into sales and hurt people who make their living of them in Canada. And the sting is being felt in America as well.

Steel tariffs have led to layoffs at the Mid-Continent Nail plant in Missouri and the company said it will have to shut down by September which is bad news for its 500 employees. The problem isn’t limited to America’s trade with Canada. European counter-tariffs on motorcycles also forced Harley-Davidson to move some its production overseas for motorcycles that will be sold in Europe.

What’s frustrating is that

it’s hard to fix what wasn’t much of a problem in the first place. The flow of trade between Canada and the US was largely balanced, but President Trump isn’t looking at the big picture. He wants to focus on trade sector by sector and win every one of them which is unreasonable and dangerous.

Apart from the indiscriminate loss of jobs, trade wars have significant security implications. That’s because trade is one of the best tools to facilitate global peace.

Inter-dependencies in supply chains make security a shared concern. Economic cooperation leads to agreements on many other fronts based on trust. That alone is a more

than compelling reason to deal with trade problems at the negotiating table, but the President doesn’t appreciate that or seem to recognize the harm he is inflicting globally or even in the places like Missouri that supported him during the election.

In Canada the government has to act swiftly and do all it can to support workers who will feel the pain the most. In addition to that, we must find a way to convince America that the best place to deal with their concerns is at a negotiating table where reasoned responses can help protect jobs.

'Wildfire!'

This spring of 2008 has been dry and windy. In our community of Fire Creek, population 900, located on the shores of Burnt River, we did not get much snow last winter, or much spring rain.

Consequently it has turned our lawns brown, and plants are just coming up, a good two weeks behind schedule.

When I step on the grass in my yard, I can hear and feel the crunch of the dead leaves and branches that have accumulated over the winter.

Surrounding our village is a vast Jack Pine forest. There is a mill about twenty km upstream from here, where the wood is stacked, and then shipped on long barges to the paper mill at Tree Bay. Normally at this time of year, the river is roaring down past us thanks to the snow runoff.

This year there is just a gentle flow.

The long weekend in May is when most folks burn off the dead grass and other debris around their homes.

They are calling for rain, starting Saturday night and lasting til Monday. It doesn't sound like a lot of rain, but it should be enough to dampen the ground. Also important is their call for no wind. It sounds like the ideal time to get this done. Of course like everyone else in town, we have our shovels and hoses ready to douse any embers, that the flames might throw off. I heard the they were going to issue a burning ban next week, so that is another reason to get it done this weekend, despite these dry conditions.

So first thing Saturday morning, I got ready. But then my buddy Stuart came over. I forgot that I had promised to be part of the gang to get his house re-shingled. He came over when he got no answer on the phone.

My wife Meghan was grocery shopping with the kids. So I put away my equipment, and headed over to his place. I calculated that we should be finished by two in the afternoon, and I could still get back to my place and get the burning done.

Well, it actually was nearer three by the time we were done. Then of course Stuart had a barbecue ready. As much as I wanted to get away, I wasn't going to pass up that. He was a fabulous cook. His grilled steaks were to die for. His wife, Marilyn, made a fabulous salad and dessert. The cold beer sure went down well too. About six as we were finishing up, I noticed that the wind had picked up, and the clouds that had popped up earlier in the afternoon had evaporated,

and the sun came out. There were no signs of rain. I commented that it was just as well I had not gone ahead with my burning. One of my other buddies there agreed, saying he had also planned to do his lawn too. We both concluded that conversation with a declaration to do it tomorrow, before moving on to the Blue Jays baseball game on TV that night. So we all ended up staying at Stuart's place until nearly midnight when the game finally wrapped up.

On Sunday morning I had a hangover from all that beer. I also got an earful from Meghan about not letting her know that I was out with the boys. I apologized like all good husbands do, just to avoid her wrath. Then I said that I had to get out and start that burning. But I did give her a dig by saying “You coming out to help? It's always good to get a woman's opinion that I am doing it right.” She responded by getting up from the table, and went to the sink to wash the dishes, and turned her back to me.

So - I left things there and headed out. Even though it was getting windy, and it was a sunny warm morning, with no rain in sight, I went ahead and got everything set up. I lit the first match and put it to a dry tuft of grass. It caught fire immediately, and began to spread. I watched as it grew in size. I had about half the backyard done when Meghan came out to tell me Stuart was on the phone for me. I asked her to have our 10-year old son, Noah, come out and watch over things while I went inside. I told him to watch to make sure it didn't get too big, or head over to the neighbour's yard. I also told him to use the shovel to beat down any flames that did get too near it. I added about using the hose if necessary.

He nodded understanding.

“No problem, Dad. Gotcha.”

I went inside and began talking to Stuart. I meant to just have a short chat, as I didn't want to leave Noah out there alone too long. Well, we got talking about yesterday and him thanking me for my help with the shingling. When he mentioned that he was going to do his lawn today, I remembered that Noah was out there alone. That was the same time I heard him yelling for me to come out right now.

I quickly finished my call, and rushed out the patio door. I was shocked to see how out of control this burn had become in just these few minutes. I happened to notice the time on my wrist watch. It had been over 15 minutes that I had been on the phone. Noah

was in a panic as he stood paralyzed at the edge of the driveway. I could see he was terrified. He shakily told me that he had it under control, but then this big gust of wind picked up some of the embers and they landed on our neighbour's fence, and up into our spruce tree in the back corner of our yard. Flames were nearing our house too, and he said he couldn't get through the flames to reach the hose. I saw his fright had frozen him in place. I felt myself getting that way too. I didn't know which to do first – get the hose turned on, or douse the flames on onr neighbour's fence, or stop the flames from devouring our spruce tree. I yelled for Meghan to get out here. She didn't hear me. In a foolish move, I left Noah standing there while I ran inside to get her. She was on the phone with her mother, their usual Sunday morning chat. When she saw my face, with it's panicked look (I suspect it was anyway!), she immediately cut her call short, and asked me what was wrong. I yelled at her to come out and help get things under control in the yard. She gasped in horror at the now raging inferno she witnessed as she went out the patio doors. The smoke was covering the yard in a haze, so she couldn't really see the burning fence and yard of their neighbour, or the spruce tree ablaze.. All she could zero in was the flames that were leaping up the side of our house and garage. Her first words were: “Get the car out of the garage. It'll explode! Noah, get away from there.” I had not thought of that. He would not move, so I grabbed him and took him to the front of the house and told him to go inside and get Emma, our four year old daughter, and Goldy, our old Golden Retriever out of the house, and wait out front.

By then our other neighbours had seen the fire and came over to help. One of them told me he had called 911. Unfortunately our little village did not have its' own fire department. We had to rely on Tree Bay to help us out. On a good day, that took a good half hour for them to get to us. Today it would turn out to take much longer.

I went back towards the garage to get our car out.

But the siding had already melted, and blown out the glass in the window. I pulled the door open, and with a loud swoosh, the air came rushing out, knocking me to the ground. I lay on my back watching the car beginning to burn. I yelled for everyone to get away. We just got to the street when the garage and car exploded. It knocked us all to the ground. And of course, that spread the fires to our other neighbours' houses.

It soon became an inferno, as fires leaped from house to house, inching closer to the forest that surrounded our village. It had gotten so big it was beyond our control. We

could just watch helplessly as it went its' own way.

Before the fire trucks could get here, it jumped the highway, and headed into the tinder dry bush. Once in there, the 'monster' took on a life of its' own, and began gobbling up trees like a starved person at a buffet, jumping from one thing to another.

Shortly after a crew of fire fighters from the mill arrived on the scene, and tried desperately to contain it. But the flames and smoke were too intense and moving so fast. They called in MNR fire crews for help. That evening they finally got here. By then the now truly wildfire had consumed 1500 ha. That was the estimate anyway. Around dusk the water bombers began dumping water on the worst spots. But because they could not use the river to fill their tanks, they had to go to the big lake. That took time.

Due to darkness setting in, they were only able to dump one more load that day. But the ground crews worked all night doing what they could.

Thankfully the wind dropped off, and it got cool that night.

Then about sunrise it began to rain, lightly at first, but heavier by noon. It rained all the rest of Monday and into Tuesday morning. That did the trick. They were able to contain the wildfire, and got it 'tamed'. There were still hot spots that popped up in the trees, and in the village too over the next few days. By the following weekend, they were able to call it out. They estimated the final size of the fire to be 3000 ha.

The village was ravished. It looked like a war zone. About half the houses were completely destroyed. But the downtown (all 3 stores, post office and bank!) was spared.

Then the investigation began. Of course, it didn't take long to zero in on me and my home as the ignition point of origin. I was charged with burning without a permit, and not having the proper equipment, and not having a management plan in case of the fire getting out of control. They were going to charge me with arson too, but came to the conclusion that it was just a costly mistake.

Then I was hit with a lawsuit from the village for damages in the amount of ten million dollars, and costs for cleanup and re-construction. Then to pile it on, most of the homeowners who lost everything, like us, sued too. Could it get worse? Yes, it could, and did.

Of course, my insurance company wouldn't pay any costs, as it was my fault. Then the mill sent me a bill for the costs of their fire fighters on the initial attack, and loss of timber. And MNR had to add to my problems too, as they sent me a bill for the wildfire.

We moved in with Meghan's mother, who lived down south. Just a day after moving in, she proposed to divorce me. She didn't want all her assets frozen, tied up with mine. Despite my despon-

dency I understood her situation and agreed that it was for the best. She earned more in her job as Payroll Supervisor at the mill than my wages as a Bell phone repairman.

Of course, during our discussion I tried to make a joke that we could pay all these costs out of our 'petty cash' fund. As if! It didn't get much of a laugh out of her.

It didn't take long to realize we were on the verge of declaring bankruptcy when some good finally happened to me, and our family.

The only thing I was able to save from the fire was my wallet that I had in my pants pocket. For once, I had not taken it out that Saturday night before the fire. And the Sunday morning I never thought about it, thanks to that headache and dry mouth.

Days later I was looking for some cash to pay for groceries, when I came upon a folded piece of paper stuck between two ten dollar bills.

I opened it up and realized it was that Lotto 649 ticket I had bought the Friday before that fateful weekend.

I headed out to the grocery store where they sold tickets, the only place in town, to check the numbers out. For some strange reason, I had a feeling that this was going to be my lucky day. And yes, you guessed it, I won 20 million dollars. I knew that would pay off my debts from that fire, and still have a bit more to stave up bankruptcy.

I rushed back and showed the lucky ticket to Meghan.

She withdrew her threat of divorce. I knew our love was really stronger than that. So the home front was looking good.

Of course, the Lotto folks wanted our photo holding the big cheque. Did we ever get a lot of publicity when they told the press our story.

Thankfully it was 99% positive, and that sure helped boost our mood too, beside the relief of having that financial security now.

After that event, the next thing after paying off those bills was to visit Fire Creek to hand over the cheques to those claimants. I wanted to do that personally despite Meghan's pleas to not go. I also wanted to visit Stuart, my best friend, and pay for his new house that I heard he was starting to build.

So on the Canada Day weekend in July we returned to my disaster. It was surprising how quickly things were improving. All the burnt houses had been leveled and new buildings were already starting to pop up. As we drove around our neighbourhood, it was so great to see how everyone was helping each other out. Ah, the joys of a small town. I regretted that I would not be returning to Fire Creek. I knew that we were a community, but I would always have the feeling everyone would blame me for the wildfire to the village and forest, and never accept me back into the fold.

On our street, our house was the only one left like a war zone. It was so sad to see.

But I vowed to clean it up and build a nice new house for some family to occupy in the future. Now that I have this windfall, I can proceed to get that done.

I made the presentations to the residnts that had sued me, at a pre-arranged meeting at the municipal office on Saturday afternoon. That night I met up with Stuart at the tiny diner on the outskirts of town. Meghan and the kids went with her to visit with her best friend, Barbara.

We both had their 'world famous' hamburger deluxe.

After apple pie we sipped on our coffee, as we began to talk seriously. During the conversation, I watched Stuart look around nervously.

There was no one else in the diner, and I sensed he had something important to tell me. He leaned in to me, and whispered: “You know, you should not be taking the full blame for this. I have heard from others in town that you weren't the only one at fault.

For example that Sunday morning I accidentally set our house on fire while I was talking to you. I thought that I had turned the heat down on the oil I was frying my potatoes . I guess I didn't and it caught fire, and spread to the rest of the kitchen before I heard the smoke alarm go off. Of course the fire department had your fire to contain, so mine was burned down, but not because of yours. I never did get around to doing my lawn. But then George over on Maple Street also was burning that day, and when the commotion started at your place, he left his own lawn unwatched. Consequently it also got away from him. Stan on Pine Street the same thing.

And Norman was on the logging road south of town looking for wood for his wood stove. After he had picked up a pile along the road, he stopped for a cigarette and beer. He tossed his finished cigarette out the window, thinking it would just land on the road. But a gust of

wind carried in into the grass along the side. It caught fire immediately, and took off on him. He panicked, and drove home, and never said anything or told anyone. That was about the time your blaze erupted. I hope you can forgive us all for letting you take all the blame and cost. It must be horrible for you and the family.” He paused and lowered his head in shame.

I put my hand on his arm, and told him about my good fortune, and not to blame himself. I handed him a cheque for the cost of rebuilding his house. He gasped at the amount, and declared that he could not accept it. After much cajoling he did finally take it. With our business and meal wrapped up, we left the diner, and I drove him to the basement apartment that he and his family had been able to rent in the untouched part of the village. As we sat in the car I thanked him for his honesty, and assured him that it would remain our secret, and I gladly was paying for the disaster. I assured him we would keep in touch, especially during the house re-construction. Then I said that I had to go and pick up Meghan and the kids so we could get back to the motel we had booked for the night up at Tree Bay. He nodded and got out of the car. As he closed the door, I tried a joke to lighten the mood. “How about those Blue Jays! Hope they do better than that last game we watched on TV!” He waved and shook his head as he closed the car door and headed inside.

I drove away. I began thinking as I headed over to pick up Meghan and the kids about our future. Knowing what I know now, maybe they would accept us back into the village without uneasiness. But then again, I would always wonder about them, plus my own guilt being a constant reminder if I stayed.

Such a quandary! Lots to think about, all thanks to a small fire that lead to that destructive 'wildfire'! To stay or go? … John

United Way Volunteers And Staff Join The City Of Timmins For The Stars And Thunder Festival

United Way Centraide North East Ontario/Nordest de l’Ontario (United Way North East Ontario) has an exclusive partnership with the Sudbury Wolves to promote programs for youth/youth mental health through its 50/50 partnership. WOLVES United has branched out to partner with the City of Timmins Stars and Thunder Festival for the 50/50 portion of the widely popular music and fireworks festival.

Currently this week and into the Canada Day long weekend, dozens of volunteers and most of the United Way North East Ontario staff are all hands-on deck to support local charitable programs in Timmins through the new high tech 50/50 electronic platform. With a successful first few days, Timmins Mayor, Steven Black, is optimistic about the outcomes of this year’s electronic 50/50 raffles. He states, “with the new technology United Way is bringing in for the 50/50 electronic raffles, we are able to see higher jackpots. By day two, we were excited to see a 50% increase.”

According to Michael Cullen, Executive Director at United Way North East Ontario, “it’s truly amazing to see our volunteers offering their time to help with this monumental task. From logistic supports to running the day to day alongside our great staff who are truly committed to creating a stronger city charitable infrastructure”.

“We are excited to partner with 14 local programs to further advance the work of building a stronger community, while igniting an innovative form of volunteer engagement that makes the Stars and Thunder Festival a true community event. The support

we have seen from our enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers has been beyond our expectations,” said Jennifer Gorman, Regional Navigator at United Way North East Ontario (Timmins office).

“The United Way also considers the 50/50 partnership with the City of Timmins to be a true testament of how such an event will succeed for years to come.”

This project of handling the charitable trust on behalf of the Stars and Thunder is an example of how the United Way North East Ontario is diversifying its portfolio of raising charitable content to local communities across North East Ontario.

Premier-Designate Doug Ford Will Build Memorial To Honour Canadian Heroes Of The War In Afghanistan

Premier-Designate Doug Ford today committed to building Ontario’s first provincial public memorial to honour Canadian heroes of the war in Afghanistan.

Ford made this announcement while addressing a joint Federal-Provincial-Territorial meeting with the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces.

“A new generation of heroes, who fought bravely against the terrorists of Al Qaeda and the Taliban, walk among us,” said Ford. “Too many of those heroes are struggling with the scars of their sacrifice. As a province and as a country, we must always remember the

159 Canadians who never returned from Afghanistan.”

Ford announced that he intends to locate the Memorial to the Canadian Heroes of the War in Afghanistan within the legislative precinct at Queen’s Park. Additional details about the cost, the design and the timeline for completion will be shared with MPPs during an upcoming sitting of the legislature.

“Supporting our troops and our military families should unite all Canadians,” said Ford. “This memorial will send a clear message about the sacrifices our fellow Canadians made to protect our values and our freedoms, lest we forget.”
