4th Annual Music Festival Shares Canada's Birthday Celebrations

Article and photos by Barb Fisher   Music when it hits you, you feel no pain! With the threatening rain, the Festival organizers were taking no chances and although Lions Beach was geared up for the opening tunes, Woody's Pub across the street in the Lakeview Hotel provided a cozy, warm and dry retreat for the kickoff of the 4th annual music extravaganza. Doc Cousineau is always up for the opener. With his roots sprouting in the Soo area he holds nothing back spinning tales in song of his youth and beyond shar-

ing more than what we need to know of his memorable escapades put to music. Paula Valois from nearby Hawk Junction shared her stories of our northern way of life... from a female point of view, and again successfully made her mum in the audience cry; that is tears of pride in her daughter's captivating voice. Lynn Devine shared the stage with Paula for a number or two and then performed her own brand of music in her beautiful sweet voice. Kicking back enjoying the music and a beer while the weekend was set in motion, it is heartwarm-

ing to be part of the Wawa family music team as artists arrived one by one, group by group all in welcoming hugs and high fives all round. Even though I didn't know some of the musicians personally, well they made me feel like I did. After much affection and hugging, Alex Charbonneau took the stage and did her thing. The bat was flying solo for her first set of the festival but later in the weekend was poised to join her Bat friends in the Belfry.   Friday evening, as in other festivals, I had to make a choice of venues and although

I had to forego Jay Case and Frank Deresti & Lake Effect at Woody's my musically tuned scouts tell me they put on a fantastic show. Wow, awesome, amazing, the band totally engaged the crowd inspiring much clapping, hooting and dancing in the aisles. Hopefully they will return next year and I will live to tell the tale. Meanwhile back at the Community Centre I settled into the pick of the seats for the evening kick off of fantastic performances. First time ever at our festival, performers Flynn & Ferrie managed to arrange their cross Canada tour to include our fair town. Hailing from Scotland and sporting their kilts in true Scottish tradition, they gathered a curious crowd. The trio satisfied the onlookers with their own distinct style each performing their own songs accompanied

by the others. Closely following, Whiskey Jack wowed the audience with a rousing tribute to Stompin' Tom and his truly Canadian tales in song. They put on a fantastic show, and I believe played beyond their time slot; no one was complaining and begged for more. Article & Photos Continued on Page 6....
