A Warm Wawa Welcome To The Outdoorsman Motel!

Welcome Kerry and Laurie Kinderman, the new owners of the Outdoorsman!

Kerry and Laurie Kinderman have recently opened the Outdoorsman Motel formally known as the Sportsman and are quickly renovating the rooms and outside.

EDC staff stopped in to meet the new owners and were welcomed by the loveable yellow lab Harley, who couldn’t wait for his belly rub.

Kerry and Laurie join us from Lake Holcombe, Wisconsin United States and are excited about their new venture in Wawa.

Kerry and Laurie have a passion for the outdoors and owned a camp on the Magpie River, visiting Wawa for years before taking the plunge to become business owners and residents.

Kerry has a hobby of building homes and loves wood working, as you can see by the

beautiful work in their motel lobby in the included photo.

They plan on renovating the entire 37 rooms to be wildlife themed. Currently, they have 17 rooms open for rent and are renovating room by room.

Kerry stated that the rooms are larger than the average motel which customers find very convenient.

The Kinderman’s are avid snowmobilers and ATVer’s and welcome everyone to stop by and say hello. Kerry and Laurie would like the community to know that they are looking for housekeeping staff and if interested to please drop resumes off at the front desk of the motel (171 Mission Road, Wawa).

Municipal Environmental Award

At the Municipality of Wawa’s Corporate Planning Meeting on May 15, 2018 council presented the second annual Municipal Environmental Award to Steve Jozin.

Steve Jozin was nominated and selected to receive the Municipal Environmental Award for his dedication to living a sustainable lifestyle over the past many years.

Steve resides in Michipicoten River Village and has personally dug his own geothermal well, has been riding his bike into Wawa instead of driving for many years and has also been designing his own windmills.

Steve brought a windmill blade to the meeting that he designed himself and

explained his design to council and guests. He then recited a poem and thanked Council for the honor of receiving the award.

INSPECTION Inspection of Approved Aerial Herbicide Spraying Pineland Forest and Martel Forest The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invites you to inspect the MNRF-approved aerial herbicide spray project(s). As part of our ongoing efforts to regenerate and protect Ontario’s forests, selected stands on the Pineland Forest and Martel Forest (see map) will be sprayed with herbicide to control competing vegetation, starting on or about: July 15, 2018. On the Pineland Forest the herbicide VisionMax silviculture herbicide, registration number P.C.P. 27736 Pest Control Products Act will be used. On the Martel Forest Forza Silviculture herbicide, registration number P.C.P. 26401 Pest Control Products Act will be used.

The approved project description and project plan for the aerial herbicide project is available for public inspection at the EACOM Timber Corp. (Pineland Forest) and RYAM Forest Management, Chapleau (Martel Forest) offices and on the MNRF public website at ontario.ca/forestplans beginning April 1st, 2018 until March 31st, 2019 when the annual work schedule expires. Ontario Government Information Centres at Chapleau and Timmins District Offices provide access to the internet.

Interested and affected persons and organizations can arrange an appointment with MNRF staff at the MNRF District or Area office to discuss the aerial herbicide project.

The list of accounts for May in a total amount of $753,960.53 was approved for payment by Council.

The appointment of Bill DeVries to the Michipicoten Non-Profit Housing Corporation Board of Directors was approved by Council.

Council authorized the travel of Cr. Julia Rowe and Cr. Pat Tait to attend the AMO Annual Conference, August 19th to 22nd in Ottawa.

Due to their age and current physical condition, 8 Infrastructure Services Department's vehicles were identified as requiring replacement between the years 2008 and 2014 through the Capital Budget due to their age and current physical condition. In its 2018 Capital Budget Council approved the replacement of 2 vehicles, and then replace 2-3 vehicles until the fleet have been replaced.

Since the Capital Budget was approved, 6 vehicles have had maintenance issues or corroded beyond repair and thus deemed unsafe to operate.

Council approved an increase in the Capital Budget to replace 8 vehicles and thereby increasing the 2018 Capital Budget (Fleet) from $100,000 to $380,000. The vehicles to be purchased include: 3 Ford pickup trucks, 3 Chev Silverados, and 2 Dodge Ram pickup trucks.

The Municipality issued RFP #2018-06 for the supply and installation of 10 Market Stalls for the Wawa Waterfront Project. Two RFP's were received, evaluated and a recommendation made to select J.Provost Contracting Ltd. The bid amount is over the specific budget for this project due to the aesthetically appealing and functional design of the market stalls.

The overall project is currently significantly under budget, with savings in the engineering component, and therefore the market stall project will not affect the overall project budget. Council accepted the proposal received from J.Provost Contracting Ltd for the supply and installation of 10 Market Stalls for the

Waterfront Project at a cost of $50,850 HST included.

Bylaws given three readings and passed: -3119-18 - to adopt the schedule of fees for The Corporation of the Municipality of Wawa for 2018.

-3122-18 - to confirm the proceedings of Council at its meetings of May 22nd and June 5th.

-3123-18 - to amend Bylaw 2821-15 to establish regulations with respect to in-water uses and structures.

-3124-18 - to enter into an agreement with the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for funding assistance for the Northern Ontario Youth Internship Program for a Tourism and Recreation Planner Intern.

-3125-18 - to adopt Policy MM-011: Concussion Prevention.

-3126-18 - to repeal Bylaw 3054-17 being a bylaw to authorize a Transmission Easement Agreement with Nextridge Infrastructure for the East-West Tie project on property at 300 Highway 17 south.

-3127-18 - to authorize the transfer of assets pursuant to section 145(1) of the Electricity Act, 1998, and the granting of an easement to Algoma Power Inc. -3128-18 - to authorize the sale of Municipal Land located at 14 First Ave, 2 Mackey St and 25 Broadway Ave to Basic Building Supply.

NDP’s Michael Mantha Wins Third Consecutive Term As MPP For Algoma-Manitoulin

June 7, 2018 (ELLIOT LAKE) – Michael Mantha has been successful in securing a third consecutive term as MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin. Mantha was delighted with the final outcome of the election results for this riding but said right from the beginning that he was taking nothing for granted.

At this time the final tally for all ridings has not been officially announced; however, the NDP is hoping to see major gains across the province. Mantha thanked his fellow Algoma-

Manitoulin candidates for having the courage to allow their names to stand on today’s ballot.

Mantha also wanted to especially thank all his supporters from across the riding.

Mantha said, “I truly enjoy the privilege of representing all the people of AlgomaManitoulin from Killarney and Nairn Centre to Manitouwadge, and from Providence Bay to Chapleau.

“I pride myself on the bridges that I have build with minis-

Austra And Anton Jurkjans

Ilona, Anton, Austra and Erika – Confirmation in Anglican Church Published with permission from Through Our Eyes Volume 13, printed in 2013 Both Austra and Anton were typical of the European immigrants who came to Canada in the early fifties.

They worked incredibly hard and long hours, raised and educated their twin daughters Ilona and Erika and, at the same time, became outstanding citizens of their adopted country.

Born in Riga, Latvia in 1914, Austra Hirsbecks was two months old when World War I began. She married Anton Jurkjans in 1933.

Anton was from somewhere on the Latvian/Russian border because he was very fluent in the Russian language.

During the German occupation of Latvia, Austra worked as a lab technician and an Army cook. In June 1944, the day before the Russian Army re-entered Latvia, it was arranged that a German Air Force pilot would fly Austra and the girls out of Latvia. The plane crash-landed in Germany. Anton made his way to Germany to join them there, and after a few months which included the experience of hiding in bomb shelters in Berlin during the Allied bombing raids, and seeing elephants in the streets of Berlin after the Berlin zoo was bombed, they were able to leave Germany for Poland.

There they were caught in the middle of intense fighting between the German and Russian armies. Eventually they reached Gdansk, Poland where the twins went to school while their parents worked. Anton was able to obtain a job in the Gdansk shipyard and that was key to being able to later sneak out by boat to Sweden..

During their three years in Poland, Austra and Anton hid Latvian refugees in their basement while making arrangements for them to escape from Poland to Sweden. Some would spend just a few days in transit

with them while others spent weeks hiding in the Jurkjans’ house. Each time when the appropriate escape arrangements had been made, Austra would make sure that the departing refugees had plenty of clothes and food for their precarious journey across the sea. Despite frequent surveillance and occasional raids by the Polish police, they were able to successfully smuggle 67 refugees from Poland to Sweden.

Finally, in 1947, it was the Jurkjans family’s turn to attempt an escape from Poland. Someone warned the authorities and the family was caught. Put into a concentration camp, they were warned that if they ever attempted to escape again, the penalties would be most severe.

After weeks in that camp, Anton was able to convince their captors to let them go free. Instead of going back to their home they sought refuge in an old lumber yard, impatiently waiting for the next opportunity to escape.

It took some time but they were lucky, being smuggled on board a Swedish freighter in broad daylight. Hiding in the ballast of the boat, Austra and the twins survived the trip sitting on a ledge, eating only cherries. They arrived in Sweden five days later, black from head to toe, totally covered with coal, oil and grime from the boat, with only a couple of shopping bags to their names. Anton was able to follow them and within a week both parents had jobs at a cement factory (Austra in the lab and Anton as mechanic) and the twins were in school. Such adaptability and courage helped the family through experiences such as these.

After completing their elementary education in Wawa, Ilona and Erika both graduated from the Shaw Business School in Toronto. Ilona then worked for Ralph Mills in the purchasing department at Algoma Ore while

Erika stayed in Toronto after graduating and worked at an ad agency called Young and Rubican where she met Donald Robertson.

They married in 1960. The Calwell family had arrived in Wawa from Northern Ireland in 1955, and Ilona married the son Jack Calwell in 1959.

They made their home in Wawa till 1964 when they moved to Toronto. Ilona and Jack now live in Burlington, while Erika and Don are in California.

Anton and Austra were an active presence in the town.

They participated extensively in the community and particularly in the Polish Alliance Club which they, along with other key players, were able to build back in 1957, a building which has played a part in the lives of many people here in Wawa, whether for weddings, funerals, birthday parties, and other memorable occasions. Anton died in 1993 and Austra in 2013, and will long be remembered by the community that welcomed them in 1951.

The Crime Scene ___________________ la scène du crime

OPP Investigate Collision On Highway 17 (WHITE RIVER, ON) - On June 8, 2018 at approximately 7:30 p.m., members from the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), were called to investigate a collision involving an OPP cruiser and a civilian motor vehicle on Highway 17, at Hammer Lake, Ontario.

As a result of the collision two people were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Highway 17 was closed for several hours and has since been reopened.

The OPP Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

The investigation is on-going at this time.

Oshawa Man Charged With Drug Offence (WAWA, ON) - On Monday May 28, 2018 at approximately 4:15 pm members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (White River) Detachment were conducting R.I.D.E checks on Highway 17 in the Hunt Township District of Algoma. At that time officers had occasion to speak with a male driver of a motor vehicle.

During the investigation police located and seized a quantity of marihuana.

As a result Emerson Martin Keith MOSES (24) of Oshawa, Ontario was arrested and charged with the following offence:

Adult Possession of a Schedule II substanceCannabis Marihuana- over 30 grams contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa, Ontario on August 13, 2018.

Traffic Violation Results In Criminal Charge For Hornepayne Man (WAWA, ON) - On Monday May 21, 2018 at approximately 6:00 pm members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Hornepayne) Detachment were on general patrols in the Town of Hornepayne, Ontario when they observed a motor vehicle travelling well in excess of the posted speed limit. The officers stopped the motor vehicle and upon speaking to the lone male driver an odour of alcoholic beverage was detected.

As a result Nathan RATCLIFF-MARTEL (24) of Hornepayne, Ontario was arrested and charged with the following offence: • Adult Driving with More than 80mgs. of Alcohol in Blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

A 90 days A.D.L.S suspension was generated and the motor vehicle has been impounded for a 7 days period. The accused was release from custody with a June 27, 2018 court date.

What A Father's Day! Father's Day was the farthest thing from 22 year old Jude Whitton's mind back in June of 1970. He wasn't even married, let alone having kids to lavish him on dopey gifts. But he was going to remedy the first part. He was concentrating on his upcoming marriage to his 21 year fiancee, June Williams.

Their relationship began during their university years when they ended up in the same class of Global Economics, and they sat next to each other. He made the first move when he leaned over and whispered in her ear that this professor taught voodoo economics, and he was writing his thesis on debunking his theories. She disagreed with him, and whispered back that he was right on, and for him to shut up so she could hear what he was saying. He was amused at her seriousness, and every once in a while, he would whisper 'voodoo' in her ear. But he did it once too often, and she jumped up and moved to another row of seats on the opposite side of the room. After the class was over, he weaved through the crowd of students and caught up to her just as she was leaving the room.

He apologized and asked her if she would have a coffee with him in the cafeteria. She glared at him, and sighed. She agreed and off they went. From then on it got more serious and finally he popped the question at their graduation ceremony. She said yes, even though she was embarrassed at the public display he made, with all the other students milling around. They agreed to hold off the official wedding until the following June.

The Saturday of the weekend of Father's Day was a bustle of activity as the final arrangements were being done before the wedding ceremony at the church at 2:00 p..m. As often happens there were a few glitches, most notably the panic of the lost ring he was to put on June's finger at the end of the ceremony. He remembered commenting how this only happens in the movies. His best man, Wayne Kidder, was a real prankster, and true to form, he pretended that he he could not find the ring. He checked his pant pockets, and vest. He was also an amateur magician. So naturally he had to produce the ring from behind his left ear. Jude frowned momentarily, but soon joined in the laughter from the guests attending the ceremony. June was not amused, and it showed. But once the ring was on her finger, and they finally became a married couple, she relaxed a bit and smiled at the antics. She wagged her index finger at Wayne, and then flashed the ring on her finger. She mouthed out to him that it would not be coming off this hand. Then she turned her attention back to Jude, as they began to walk down the aisle and outside for the photos and confetti. Then of course, the meal and dance took place that night over at the Legion Hall.

Sunday, Father's Day, was spent traveling to their honeymoon destination of Niagara Falls.

At Christmas of 1970 they announced to the world that they were expecting a baby in June.

As it worked out, their first child, a boy, Oliver Thomas, named after their fathers, in keeping with tradition, was actually born on Father's Day of 1971. So that turned out to be his present for that year. Quite a nice one that would be hard to top in future years, Jude had to admit.

No recognition in 1972 for being a father. June was too busy keeping up with a one-year old child.

But in 1973 she began making a fuss. Of course Oliver was still too young to understand what Father's Day was all about. So she bought him a joke 'tie', and a shirt and jeans. Each year she would pick out something that she knew he needed, but signing the card from Oliver. Those gifts included the joke things such as as underwear,and socks, The serious gifts were sunglasses, and a Blue Jays baseball cap. Finally by 1979, at age eight, Oliver wanted to pick out his own gift. He finally decided on a book of muscle cars of the 1950's. Jude was into restoration of those old classics that year.

So Oliver was too. Anywhere and anything Daddy was doing, Oliver was into it too. Yes, they had such a close bond, which June was glad to see. But it was always her he came to for his bedtime story and goodnight kiss. Shortly after that Father's Day, came the birth of their daughter, Emiline Marie, in 1974.

She turned out to be a Daddy's girl.

Over the years he was treated to some dumb gifts, but also some he really was thrilled about.

One year it was a DVD movie of Fast & Furious. The first year his daughter was able to give gifts on her own was the cartoon movie 'Cars'. He rolled his eyes when he opened it up.

Fortunately Emiline didn't notice it, but June did. She gave her shoulders a little shrug of understanding. But being the good Dad, he thanked her and gave her a big hug. They watched it that evening. To his relief, he didn't have to watch it again. But the Fast & Furious movie he really did appreciate. He watched it many times over the next years.

Then when the kids were in their teens, he was lucky to get a card and a terse Happy Father's Day. But once they got to college and university they came home often, and Father's Day began being special again. Although he did not mention it to June or anyone, he was glad to have them back.

As the kids graduated and got jobs, it was family barbecues that became the tradition. He always ended up being the barbecue chef, but he didn't mind that at all.

As Jude got older, for some unexplained reason, Father's Day became accident prone days.

One year in the late 90's he got a membership at the local gym.

On his second visit he dropped the weights on his chest, and had to have the instructor lift them off him. He ended up with a

bruised sternum. And hurt pride.

That finished the visits there.

Another year they bought him a new computer, his first. He turned out to be technically challenged, and somehow he ended up on a porn site, and accidentally downloaded it, instead of deleting it. Well, it was just the next day that he got a visit from the OPP with a warrant to seize his computer, and he was charged with viewing and downloading pornographic material.

It took quite a while to get his name cleared in court.

Then there was the year that the kids and June bought him an all expense paid trip into a fishing lodge on Oba Lake.

Three of his buddies also got the same package. That had been arranged by all the wives and kids. Unfortunately, that Father's Day weekend trip almost turned to disaster.

Jude and his best friend, Lawrence Swimmer, decided to take a canoe for a paddle up the lake. There was a secluded bay that they had gone by in their guider's boat that Saturday afternoon. But they didn't get a chance to try it out, as their guide had another area in mind.

It looked like a good spot to cast for walleye. They began casting and before long Lawrence got a strike. He played with him, while Jude struggled with keeping the canoe in place so the line would not get tangled up. Finally after a while he got it close to the canoe.

He stood up so Jude could get in behind him and scoop it up into the net. Well, you can just imagine what happened next. Sure enough, they both lost their balance and tipped the canoe over, throwing them into the water. In the ensuing moments, Lawrence screamed for help as he sank under the water, with the fishing line and walleye twisted around his arms. That prevented him from using them to get himself upright. Jude was clinging to the over turned canoe. He took a moment to catch his breath and calm down before letting to of the canoe and diving for Lawrence. During the first try, he could not find him. With his heart pounding and a feeling of panic setting in, he dove under the water again. This time he touched his ankle. He used that as a point of reference so he could reach up to his shoulders and head so that he could pull him to the surface.

Lawrence thrashed about, as he coughed and spit out the water in his lungs. Jude came back up and guided him to the overturned canoe. With them both clinging to it, they paddled their way to shore. There was not much of a shoreline, as it was all overhung by spruce branches.

But they did find one rock outcrop that they were able to crawl up on, as well as pulling up the canoe.

Lawrence continued coughing while Jude watched him. Finally they were able to speak. They cursed each other for their stupidity. But then they calmed down and began thinking about what to do next. Lawrence said with a quiver of fear in his voice that he was not going to get back in that canoe. Jude pointed out that without paddles, it was not much use in even trying that anyway. He recommended that they just stay put until a rescue party came along. Their other two friends knew where they were going, so it wouldn't be too long

before help came. He hoped that he reassured Lawrence, as well as himself. Fortunately the days are long in June, as it took until nearly eleven before they were rescued. The four friends made a pact that they would never tell their family about this mishap.

Of course, they did eventually find out. This sort of thing never stays hidden forever, does it!

Another eventful Father's Day came two years later when the family chipped in and bought tickets for a Blue Jays game in Toronto on Sunday afternoon. In the third inning a fly ball came his way, and as he reached out for it, he fell over the railing and landed on the cement floor of the level below. He ended up in the hospital with a broken shoulder and two cracked ribs– but he caught the ball! Some consolation, the family declared.

The next eventful Father's Day was when the family gave him a ticket for the the drag races in Elliot Lake. One of the racers lost control and rammed into the chain link fence protecting the spectators. Lucky him – a piece of the debris careened over the fence and hit him in the chest.

He got the wind knocked out of him, and unfortunately those same two broken ribs from that earlier episode at the Blue Jays game.

The next they agreed it might be safer to going back to just having a barbecue at home, with a few friends coming over.

Surely nothing could happen this time? What about the propane tank exploding? Well, not quite, but it came close. They don't know what he did, but when he went to light the pilot light, the flames shot up several feet into the air. He ended up with singed hair and the tip of his nose was burned. But because he was so startled that he jumped backwards and fell over one of the deck chairs and hit his head on the deck. He also twisted his knee very badly. So he looked like the walking dead for a few days, with a large bump on the back of his head, and a limp as he tried to walk. Of course he refused to go to the hospital to check for a possible concussion and knee damage. Thankfully he healed okay without any problems.

Then there was the year they decided to go out to his favourite steakhouse restaurant for supper. That should be safe, right. But no, again, a mishap.

At the buffet table he had a bowl of soup on the saucer, in his left hand, and as he turned to go back to their table, he bumped into a little old lady, and tipped the bowl onto her front. She screamed in shock, and the rattle of the broken bowl on the hard tile floor got everyone's attention. Needless to say, the family was mortified at the scene. Jude was all apologetic, and tried dabbling her dress , and to everyone's embarrassment, he touched her breasts. She pushed him away.

A waitress came over and took her to the washroom to clean up.

He hustled over to their table, head hung low. His face was a blushing red. One of the bus boys came out and cleaned up the spilled soup and broken soup bowl. Nobody talked at the table for a while. June and the kids just shook their heads in disbelief.

Finally June broke the silence.

While they waited for their main course, she handed him an envelope and card, and wished him

a Happy Father's Day, and told him not to worry about it. It could happen to anyone, she assured him. He shrugged his shoulders in acknowledgment as he opened the envelope. Inside the card were several lottery scratch tickets, namely Bingo, Crossword, and Keno.

He thanked them, and tried to make light of the accident. They all loosened up, and began joking about it. Shortly the waitress brought dessert. Then while sipping their coffee, he scratched off the cards. Finally, a successful end to a Father's Day. He won $100 on the Bingo, $5000 on the Crossword, and $50 on Keno.

June and the kids all commented that maybe his Father's Day luck was finally changing for the better. They all hoped so. And it did in 2017 when he and June had taken a vacation over to England as their wedding anniversary presents to themselves. They were on the London Bridge that fateful night of June 3rd when those terrorists drove their van into the crowd and then getting out and stabbing those innocent bystanders. Jude ran after one of the attackers, but then stopped when he saw a bleeding woman on the ground.

She was gushing blood from her neck. He took off his light jacket and made a ball of it, and pressed it into her neck, as he tried to calm the woman. Shortly the paramedics came over to him and June, who was helping this woman's friend stay calm, even though she had no physical injuries. They took over the situation. The next day they were confronted in their hotel room by a CNN reporter asking for an interview after learning that his quick action had saved her life, and he was to be proclaimed as a hero. June smiled as she let him into the room and then ran over and hugged him. Like all true heroes, Jude denied the accolades, and declared that he just did what anyone else would have done. The reporter advised him that his story would air on Sunday evening. He left his card after having his camera man take a photo as part of the story. But it never did make the air, for which Jude was thankful.

They arrived back home on Saturday, June 17th. The next day, Sunday, June 18th was Father's Day, of course. That afternoon, the kids and grandchildren came over to the house, and made a real fuss about their hero-father and grandfather.

Oliver did the presentation of a homemade medal of bravery he had created to honour his father. Jude got all sentimental and had to wipe a tear from his eye, although he declared it was just his allergies acting up. Oliver wrapped it up by declaring: “Our father is no longer that accident prone man we have all come to know and love. We'll miss that, I suppose, but that can't happen any more, now that he is this international hero. Love ya, Pops!” He hugged his father, and all the others circled him, trying to get their hug in too. But just as a precaution, Oliver did the barbecue of the steaks. “Don't want to press our luck, do we,” Oliver declared. That got a laugh from everyone. So this helped ensure Father's Day was a memorable one for the Whitton family.

Tips For Creating A Pet Friendly Family Yard For Summer Fun

TurfMutt.com) People aren’t the only ones who love to spend time in the family yard during the summer months. For the family pet, the outdoor living room serves many purposes – providing a place to relax, burn off some energy, play safely with friends (human and furry), and do their “business.”

To help everyone – including your pets – enjoy the family yard this summer, consider these tips from TurfMutt.

He’s the spokesdog for the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute’s (OPEI) environmental education program.

TurfMutt is a former rescue dog who paws it forward by helping kids and their families learn about the benefits of their family yard for people and pets. As a former street dog himself, TurfMutt also advocates for pet rescue organizations and causes.

Skip Fake Grass Artificial turf (a.k.a. fake grass) is never a good idea, especially if you have pets.

Plastic grass gets very hot during the summer, is challenging to clean, and is anything but environmentally-friendly.

It cannot be recycled, and it requires water to clean and cool it. Be a backyard superhero and select real turfgrass.

Pick the Right Plants & Grasses As for which kind of grass to choose, go for something hardy that will withstand a high volume of traffic. Buffalo and Bermuda grasses can be a good choice, depending on your climate zone. For other

plants and shrubs, check the ASPCA’s list of toxic and non-toxic garden plants for advice before buying. You’ll want soft, yet sturdy, foliage near walkways – save the delicate decorative flowers for elevated flowerbeds and patio pots.

Choose Natural There are many non-toxic ways to prevent pests in your backyard, which is good news for your people and pets!

Wind chimes near flower and garden beds can help keep pets and pests away. Scented marigolds repel unwanted insects while attracting spider mites and snails. Lavender smells amazing and repels fleas and moths. The oil in basil plants can keep mosquitoes and flies away.

Consider Pollinators & Other Wildlife While you want to keep some pests out, remember that nature starts in your backyard! Your family yard provides habitat and food for birds, butterflies, bees and more. Each of these species help pollinate human food crops and flowering plants, so take them into consideration when you’re selecting your living landscapes.

Create a Doggy Dream Yard One final tip – there’s no shame in going all out to make your yard a dream for your dog! Remember, your outdoor living room is one of his favorite places to be. Some ideas include adding a splash pool for your pup, creating a sandbox for Fido to unleash his love of digging, or adding a puppy pergola to provide shade for Sadie. Be creative!

Your canine will thank you.

Promise of Electoral Reform Arrives Too Little, Too Late

Recently the government used time allocation to end debate on their Bill C-76, which they are calling the Elections Modernization Act. While the electoral reform debate may seem as if it’s been around forever, this bill has only been debated in the House for less than eleven hours after being tabled at the end of April - a wellunderstood deadline for any changes to be in place for the next election. Opposition parties and democratic reform advocates are worried the bill is being treated as an afterthought once the government abandoned the reforms promised in the 2015 election. They feel the government waited until the eleventh hour to bring their most recent proposal.

It’s no secret electoral reform played a major role in the last election, but the government shouldn’t be going it alone and all parties should have been consulted before any changes were proposed.

The campaign promise to end the first past the post system of voting has long been abandoned, but other reforms that could make our electoral system more democratic are also being ignored. The most obvious is the exorbitant amount of money third parties are allowed to spend trying to influence campaigns.

Although the current legislation requires disclosure of third party participation, it makes little difference when they are still allowed to spend enormous amounts of money to influence elections. That’s why New Democrats are saying the loopholes that allow third party influence should be closed altogether.

Another area of concern is foreign influence in elections. As more information is revealed about the role outsiders played in the Brexit vote in the UK and the 2016 US election, it’s obvious Canada should be looking to defend our electoral system from possible threats. But under C-76, foreign-funded advertising is still permissible, and there’s no attempt to address false advertising. The Cambridge Analytica Facebook scandal exposed how vulnerable Canadian’s information has become, which is why the government claims this bill has protections for personal information. What’s missing are requirements for political parties to report how they actually handle personal information. Also, this bill makes no effort to establish consequences when rules about this are broken.

Despite introducing this last minute legislation, the

role of Chief Electoral Officer remains vacant after almost two years. If the government is serious about reforming our electoral system, they must appoint a qualified candidate to this position. This will help ensure that any changes made have oversight from the individual responsible for running the upcoming federal elections.

The Elections Modernization Act is a watered down version of what was promised by the government in 2015. Though portions of this legislation, such as the section that limits the length of elections, are necessary, the sheer size of C-76 and the government’s lack of awareness about its implications make it seem rushed and problematic. Parties must be held accountable when it comes to protecting the personal information of Canadians. While these are reforms to our electoral system, it would be a stretch to call all of them democratic.

All parties should have been consulted in a meaningful way before drafting this legislation. A party that wins 40% of the popular vote shouldn’t use that “majority” to impose amendments that change the Elections Act to best suit their interest.

Dear Editor, The recently-implemented U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products are unacceptable, and a serious blow to the workers who rely on these industries for their livelihoods.

Two months ago, Justin Trudeau promised Canadian workers that he had resolved the tariff threat from the U.S. on imports of steel and aluminum from Canada.

After the U.S. announcement last week, it is clear that his promise wasn’t kept.

Canada’s Conservatives warned Justin Trudeau that he was unprepared for this development, but his recent Budget did not include any measures to support the steel and aluminum industry.

This threat has been looming for a year already, bringing massive instability and a turbulent investment climate.

This is yet another blow to our economy, which has lost billions in investment, and seen critical energy projects such as Northern Gateway and Energy East fail at the hands of the Trudeau government.

Canada’s Conservatives will always put Canadian workers first. We condemn these American tariffs, and stand with the men and women of our steel and aluminum industries.
