Mme Lise Gagne, Danica Collis, Emma Jo Beach, Alicia Spreng, Mme Marie-Eve Couture, Louise Needham Article and photo by Barb Fisher   The students at Ecole Publique L'Escalade may be few in number, but have many novel ideas in innovation and caring for their community's well being. Grade 6, 7 and 8 students represented by Danica Collis, Emma Jo Beach, and Alicia Spreng with their teachers Mme Lise Gagne and Mme Marie-Eve Couture gathered at the Lady Dunn Hospital to present to Louise Needham RN the culmination of their latest project - IV picc line covers designed to help cheer up patients facing the gruelling regime associated with catheter insertions.   The students and their teachers have been involved with many ventures over

the past school year to get youngsters involved in community projects in keeping our environment eco-friendly and making positive change in their future. One objective this school year was to produce the catheter covers... not by the dozen, not by the hundreds, but exceeding their expectations with 1,600 picc line covers in a wide assortment of funky, unique and cheery designs that put a little sunshine into one's day. The covers fit over the sterile insertion point of the picc and alleviates chafing of the line against the skin, but most of all the colourful designs remind patients of the fun times they can return to after treatment: Canada flag celebration days, fishing on a misty lake, tickling your pet,

eating cake and ice-cream. The students' enthusiasm has proved contageous attracting much curiosity with friends and relatives digging out their flannel remnants, and extending a welcome to Mme Gagne's husband Luc who joined the team tracing, cutting and trimming. The exercise in fun has grown legs with many surrounding communities requesting an order, and Louise, deep in thought was busy hatching a new project that she will propose to the students for next year. As school closes for the summer, I'm sure Ecole Publique L'Escalade students will be busy hatching innovative ideas for the next school year. Keep up the good work. Our future is in good hands!

Summer is almost upon us and so is the annual summer wine tasting hosted by the LDHC Foundation. Board members and staff have been busy planning a great event featuring 5 wines from around the world and 2 Northern Ontario craft beers. Of course, there will also be tasty morsels to complement each beverage.   You may support this fundraiser in many ways: by buying individual tickets or purchasing a sponsorship package. Please contact Crystal Lutz at 705-856-2335, ext. 3219 if you are interested. It is shaping up to be another sold out event

so be sure to get your tickets early! They are available at the LDHC Admitting Desk.   Get your friends together for a wonderful evening of food, drink and music (courtesy of Mary Ciuciura). Hope to see you there!   For more information about the Foundation or how to donate today contact Crystal Lutz at 705-856-2335 extension 3219 or email us at foundation@ldhc.com.
