The 12th annual Garden Party hosted by the Lady Dunn Health Centre, Canadian Red Cross and Senior's Solution Council showed our community that the seniors among us still know how to party hearty. I took a seat outside on the grounds at the hospital hoping the rain would be delayed until I had my periodic fix of my favourite tunes, country oldies but goodies and who best to enable my fix but the "Goodtimers."

The seniors from the Long Term Care wing of the Lady Dunn Health Care thoroughly enjoyed listening to the tunes, tapping their toes and digging into the great eats provided for all. Helpers delivered drinks and fetched sandwiches, fruit and sweets to the mobility challenged, all prepared by the Lady Dunn kitchen staff while everyone enjoyed the entertainment.

Amongst the guests were again the Red Hat Ladies who never miss an opportunity to share in good times, and representing the younger generation, a group of students from Ecole Publique de l'Escalade complemented the gathering with their youthful eagerness.

Host Darlene Trovarello, Red Cross Co-ordinator welcomed everyone in attendance and added to the afternoon's celebration by announcing two winners of a potted geranium plant each. The random draw winner was lucky Lucille Pelley and for the guest sporting the best dressed red and white attire, Barb Sutherland was judged Canada's Birthday gal.

Risk Committee spoke on the various geriatric programs available for seniors: diabetes program, nutritional information, and various exercise programs to maintain or increase strength, endurance, coordination, range of motion, balance and mobility.

Much thanks to everyone involved in making this great day another one to remember. By celebrating contributions made by seniors in our community, we will be forever young.

I met the students as they walked down from their school to the Food Bank heavily laden with boxes of canned goods and other non-perishable items collected in their latest drive; over 100 items.

Earlier preparations had been made in hanging posters in the school, sending letters home, media coverage on their Face

Book page and advertising on JJAM-FM radio. The kids earned their feelings of pride and satisfaction in a job well done.

It is a sad reality of life that food banks are a necessary entity in our society, and unfortunately in Wawa our economic climate and generally rising costs in all commodities and delivery will always necessitate generous people helping out others struggling in life. Our community is noted for its generosity with community events, organizations, businesses, service clubs, school kids and

ordinary folk regularly and continually giving and sharing of their wealth. The Wawa Family Health Team helps out offering regularly scheduled outreach clinics at the Food Bank: Diabetes testing and information clinic, nursing clinic and social worker assistance. These scheduled clinics are not restricted to food bank clients but available to anyone in the community on a dropin basis.

Once again, a huge shout out for the grade 9 students at Ecole Saint-Joseph - well done!

Litter Problem Addressed

By Our Garbologists

Shawn Mahon & Jessie Labonte of the EDC & The Garbologists Article & photo by Barb Fisher Karin Grundt and her band of volunteer garbologists have been working tirelessly since 1992 to clean up the environment of our beautiful northern home and make it a litter conscious town. Last week she hosted a get-together of concerned citizens in yet another attempt to get the public informed and on board with some strategies to combat the problem. Besides her group of volunteers, Shawn Mahon and Jessie Labonte from the EDC were present and over a great lunch and beverages, ideas were brainstormed and some possible strategies were targetted to pursue.

Karin has a persuasive attitude, but more important, she never gives up. She first coined the phrase "Garbologist" after starting out with the dubious title of "bag lady", but meeting up with an MNR worker in the bush many years ago, Karin asked him who he was.

When he proudly replied that he was a geologist, Karin countered instinctively, "well I'm a garbologist". And so the term stuck and 25 years later Wawa's Garbologists are still in the trenches dragging out garbage with no letup in sight.

Over the years Karin has written countless letters to government legislators and has received mixed sentiments; most passing the letter off to someone else for reply, one disregarding details by referring to hwy 17 as the hwy 11 corridor, and Prime Minister Trudeau passed the letter out of his hands stating that it was under provincial and municipal jurisdiction and not his. Dr. Suzucki replied to one of Karin's letters by a written note in his own hand, conceding that cleaning up garbage was a lifelong struggle with no apparent solution, as the situation has been made all the worse by our notion that disposability is an acceptable practice - use something once and toss it away!

One reply from Carol Hughes' office was a little more encouraging in that her government is trying some strategies to combat the problem: Stash Your Trash roadside litter containers, pickup of obvious roadside larger trash items by road maintenance contractors, Adopt-A-Highway program for volunteers to be properly outfitted and trained for safe roadway cleanups, more highway toilet

stops, and some tourist centres being open all year round.

Karin has over the years initiated some of her own simple ideas such as erecting posters on the disgrace of littering, sewing hand made cloth bags and handing them out at the grocery store, but much more needs to be done. By brainstorming with her helpers several other strategies can be tried, or at least lobbying action initiated such as: - starting at kindergarten in the school system, youngsters should be indoctrinated in simple "no trash" strategies in essays and projects for display - drive through food establishments could offer a friendly good day with the addition of "don't litter" - during driver training, anti-littering ed should carry the same importance of no drinking and driving - electronic and fixed highway signs - installation of more highway garbage cans and toilets - deposit imposed on plastic containers such as water bottles and juice containers - perhaps one day a year whereby people could put large items on the street for others to pickup and free dumping for the leftovers - education and the enforcement of bylaws and fines Other strategies are arguably expensive, but the destruction of our planet should be of utmost concern: - cameras at load check areas, police ghost car presence, making littering a chargeable offence - DNA databank for professional transport drivers for urine analysis, with the threat of losing their job Karin would love nothing more than littering to be obliterated, and she has always felt the need for liability insurance coverage for her crew and would dearly love the comfort of their health needs covered when on garbage pickup detail. Other than this, Karin is still optimistic that change will happen with Education, Enforcement of bylaws and Fines. Much thanks Karin and your helpers. Despite all, the world is a better place with you and yours in it. And the final word comes from Karin STOP LITTERING!

2. Sheltered from the wind.

3. Located at least three metres from the forest, overhanging branches or other flammable material.

4. Small. A small fire is best for cooking and is easier to control and put out. The forest is no place for a bonfire.

5. Put out as soon as possible: soak with water then stir the ashes with a stick or shovel to uncover hot coals, and soak again.

Un concours original et délicieux pour le mois de la nutrition Les élèves de l’école secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa) inscrits au cours d’hôtellerie et tourisme ont participé au concours « S’amuser avec la nourriture» qui leur était offert par le biais du programme d’alimentation saine du District de santé d’Algoma et sous la supervision des enseignantes Mme Carole Bouffard et Mme Annette Lytwenko. Plus de 660 élèves habitant dans le district d’Algoma ont participé au concours qui invitait les participants à produire une sculpture avec de la nourriture dans le cadre du mois de la nutrition.

Algoma District School Board Approves Recommendations For Sir James Dunn P.S. In Wawa, ON Based on the Initial Staff Report, School Information Profile feedback, public input and the Senior Administration Final Report, the Algoma District School Board also approved that the JK-8 school population, staff and program currently housed at Sir James Dunn Public School in Wawa, be relocated to a JK-12 facility on the Michipicoten High School site. The recommendation also noted that the Algoma District School Board is to investigate potential community partnerships with whom space can be shared at the JK-12 site, thereby making it a desirable community hub. This would be contingent upon the Algoma District School Board applying for and receiving Ministry of Education Capital Funding.

In the event that sufficient funding was not approved, students would remain at their current sites pending further consultation in regard to future options.

Addressing the timeline ADSAB Superintendent Joe Maurice states, “The board approval of a JK-12 model has now provided a direction

that will allow us to request Ministry funding approval through the Capital Priority process. Specific transition timelines will be dependent on the Ministry response to our request, the funding that can be secured, and timelines for construction.

As discussed at the Public Meetings, once these factors are known and a specific timeline can be established, a transition plan will be developed with input from students, parents, and staff from both school communities, as well as our community partners, to ensure a smooth transition. We will continue to provide information to the community as it becomes available.”

Wawa Student To Attend Award Winning SHAD This Summer A record 801 youth from coast to coast to attend SHAD this July

WATERLOO, Ont. – 801 high school students are looking forward to taking the summer off so they can take part in one of this country’s top incubators for youth innovation and entrepreneurship.

The students, including Sunil Cotterill of Wawa, will be participating in SHAD, the unique and award-winning Canadian enrichment program that has helped develop the raw skills and talents of close to 16,000 youth since 1980.

SHAD has helped produce 32 Rhodes Scholars in that time and many other leading innovators and entrepreneurs are part of the SHAD Network including Michele Romanow, a serial entrepreneur and television personality on CBC’s Dragons’ Den. Three SHAD alumni -- or Fellows as they’re known -are currently advising Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as part of his Government’s Youth Council including Simone Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh says SHAD introduced her for the first time to like-minded, similarly driven youth leaders and helped her see the impact she could have. She believes being part of the SHAD network and creating bonds that last a lifetime is more important than ever for the students and for the country.

Cavanaugh says, “Canada right now is focused on innovation and youth and the best combination of those two things is at SHAD.” SHAD President and CEO Tim Jackson says SHAD 2017 students are in for the summer of their lives: “Past students rave about the program and how it transforms them. That’s why we’re trying to ensure SHAD is known and available to every eligible student across the country.”

SHAD offers bursaries to students with financial need and recently announced a partnership with Pathways to

Education to help students from more marginalized communities attend the program.

A record 13 Canadian university campuses from coast to coast will play host to SHAD this summer including Ryerson University, the first program hosted in Toronto.

Governor General David Johnston, who has made innovation one of his pillars, was on hand for the launch of the program at Ryerson in May. “What you do is develop people who look at the world a different way. They become game changers. They know how to alter things for the better,” said the Governor General, adding, “It’s so important for the country that SHAD scale up and scale out.”

Students live in residence for the month of July at SHAD. They attend lectures and workshops from top faculty focused around STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math). Experiential learning is also a big part of SHAD. Students are presented with a theme or social problem every summer which they learn at the beginning of the program. They have to devise an original product or service that addresses this real world, complex issue. In the process, they are taught how to build a business plan, marketing plan and working prototype and come away with an entrepreneurial mindset.

For the third straight year, SHAD had a record number of applications and a waiting list for coveted positions in the program. The students are selected for SHAD after an intense competition which includes examining students’ extracurricular activities and the work they are doing in their communities and beyond to make a difference.

Any obstacles the students may have had to overcome along the way are also considered.

Sir James Dunn Students' Artwork Decorates Legion

VIKING VOICES

Michipicoten High School students are finishing up another year of secondary education. For some, it was their first, and for others, their last with us. We would like to congratulate our graduates this year. Great job everyone and good luck in your futures!

We will be celebrating graduation Thursday, June 29th at 7:00 p.m.

We also said our good byes to staff members. Mr. Kusic was with us for twenty-seven years, starting as a geography teacher, moving into the vice principal and then principal roles. He could be seen coaching and cheering on many a team in the gym or on the field, and was a great team player when it came to Christmas concert skits! As a graduate from MHS in the 80s, Mr. Kusic came home to finish his career amongst the Vikings and also with the staff and students at Sir James Dunn this past year.

Mrs. Kusic is also retiring this year. She has been with MHS for twenty years, making her home and raising her family here in Wawa. Mrs. Kusic filled an indispensable role in our school community, teaching, ‘guiding’ and coaching. She spoke at the year-end assembly about how she will miss the students.

She thanked them for allowing her into their lives and how much she will miss that connection with them. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Kusic, for all that you did for the students, supporting them in their secondary education

and preparing them for the world beyond our school halls!

We also said ‘see you later’ to Mrs. Benka. She has accepted a special assignment position with the Algoma District School Board at the board office in Sault Ste. Marie. She has been with us for eleven years and had moved into the role of guidance counsellor this year. She was an important member of our staff, in the social science as well as the science department. We wish Mrs. Benka and her family all the very best as they transition back into big city life!

We held our annual yearend assembly with Mr. McGregor’s famous slideshow of the year in review, as well as academic and athletic awards. Academic achievement was marked by a certificate and a free sub sandwich from Subway. Thank you to Subway for donating lunches for the students. Athletes were given certificates and sapphire blue Viking t-shirts this year. Congratulations to all winners.

We would also like to thank Mrs. Dorothy Egan for all of her hard work keeping the MHS Memorial Garden well looked after. It always looks so nice for graduation.

Report cards will be mailed out in the coming weeks.

Have a safe and relaxing summer. We are looking forward to welcoming a new group of Vikings next school year. See everyone in September!

Conversation With Our Wawa Goose As told to Jim White

This is a fictional conversation with our Wawa Goose, affectionately known as Grady, while he stands on guard at the entrance to Wawa out at the TIC, which occurred on Monday, June 26/17.

“I am getting excited but also nervous as July 1st approaches, and a new casting is unveiled, and a spruced up base. I have lived in this current body since 1960, and I am feeling the effects of the rusting going on inside me. Everyone has been so concerned as they witness my deterioration. There have been many 'doctors' checking up on me, and trying to save my body. Their prognostication has been to put me on death's row, and the only way to save me was to create a new carcass. It has taken a while, but they finally have been able to succeed in getting this done, and thus saving me for many more years to come.

Ever since the announcement had been made that a new Goose was on the way, I have been mulling over my future inside this new frame.

Originally I was leaning towards the thought of finally being able to escape my confinement and be free to be a real goose again, and go about the yearly ritual of raising a family, and doing the spring and fall migrations. But then reality set in, and I realize that I am too old for all of that routine now. Also, I do enjoy all the attention and picture taking with me and you humans.

I am sure that I am one of the most photographed statues in Canada, if not the entire world.

How many times have residents have been asked where they are from and they say Wawa, and they get a reply of: 'oh that is where the big Goose is.'

How many other towns have such immediate recognition.

So I am proud of that. And so many folks traveling through Wawa stop here at the TIC for a photo op. I get a real thrill of hearing all their stories of where they are traveling to, family stories, etc.

They don't realize that I can hear their conversations, and I blush at some of them.

However, some of them are quite amusing; some are sad; some are frightening; some are inspirational; some make no sense at all. I have heard them all. For some strange reason, you have been the only one who has been able to hear and speak to me. Some sort of psychic connection, I guess. I heard you speak to me that July 1st of 2000. All you said was that you wondered what stories I could tell, and you jumped back, obviously startled, when I replied that I could tell you lots of stories. Then you asked dumbly if I really talked, and I said yes – remember? We have

had some interesting conversations over those years, haven't we. Too bad I can't talk to everyone who comes by. Oh, well, at least I have you to chat with every once in a while. Now I just hope that I can successfully get my being transferred to the new skeleton before the old one is dismantled, and I can continue to stand on guard here for many more years.

As I understand that you are doing a report to the Algoma News Review newspaper, I should refresh your memory of how this all came about - I was born on the banks of the St. Mary's River near Sault Ste. Marie. I had three sisters, and two brothers. My mother raised us, of course.

She was a good Mother Goose, and let us have lots of freedom to play and explore.

That first summer was the best time of all.

Anyway the next years went by uneventfully. It was St. Mary's River in the spring, summer and fall; the Bayou , Louisiana for the winter.

But on my eighth year, I met a charming goose, with the name of Goodrina. We fell in love, and decided to mate.

But she didn't like my area, and she wanted to be near her own family. They were set up here in Wawa on the Magpie River, north of town.

So I agreed to settle here too.

That first year here was so much fun for us, as we set up 'house' as you people call it.

We had a brood of five goslings. But I left the raising of the kids to Goodrina. I spent the time getting some food for them once in a while, but mostly just having fun exploring and entertaining myself.

The ninth year here was also fun. We had a smaller brood of only two kids that year.

The tenth year was when my life really changed. It was just shortly after we arrived that spring of 1960. I was leisurely swimming down the Magpie River near the bridge that now crosses the river on Highway 17. I saw two men on the far bank setting up some sort of a cannon-type machine. I was curious as to what it was all about, so I began swimming closer, so that I could check it out. I got about 20 yards from them when I suddenly heard a loud 'Boom'! It startled me, and I got ready to fly away when I was hit in the chest with a thud. It felt like a fist in the gut. It took my breath away, and I collapsed into the water. I remember floating down the river towards these men, and that machine. As I got in front of it, one of the men threw a fish net over me, and scooped me up out of the water. I was stunned, and felt paralyzed. And I have felt that way ever since.

As I discovered that day, the man who scooped me out of the water was Al Turcott.

His invention was called “The Capta-Transformer”- a machine that can convert a live body into an iron casting, with the help of this special dye liquid that seeps through the skin (in my case, through my feathers). I don't think he realized that I was still alive inside this frame, at least in mind and soul. One of the other things that this machine could do was enlarge or shrink a carcass (for lack of a better term), by using a dial on the side of the barrel, and a cable that ran from the barrel to the subject – me in this instance. I don't understand the mechanics of it all. But it worked. They enlarged me after they hauled me up to the top of the hill where I am now standing, and hoisted me up onto this cement stand.

And now that I am going to have a new body it is time to dust off the 'Capta-Transformer' again!

I hope they know where it is. Otherwise, my goose is cooked, if you know what I mean.

But getting back to that first year in 1960, when they opened the last link of highway 17. It took me all spring and summer to adjust to my new reality of being trapped inside this huge goose statue, and not being able to get out of it, or even speak to all the folks who came by. But by the end of the summer I was finally able to accept it, and began to enjoy the twist of fate that had thrown me into this entrapment – until I got that urge to fly south in September. After that first year, it got easier to accept the fact that I would not be flying south any more. I still have a bit of a pang every once in a while, especially on those sunny cool fall days, but it's nothing serious. Well, that explains things pretty well.

I hope it's enough for your paper. Listen, I have a great story for you, if you have time. It happened a couple of weeks ago...”

I hated to do it, but I had to interrupt Grady and his story. The deadline to get this report into the paper was getting close. I still had to get it prepared and sent. But I told him that I would come out later and he could tell me it then. He said that he understood, and I know it is true, as I have done this to him many time over the yea rs.

ERECHOOK, Nestor John Very peacefully with his family by his side at the Lady Dunn Health Centre on Friday June 23, 2017 in his 96th year. Loving companion of Ann Hicks, the late Gayle Katzenback and the former husband of Ruth Erechook. Tour Celebrating Glenn Gould And His “Idea Of North” Launches This September Article by the NORDIK Research Intitute Sault Ste. Marie, ON – Glenn Gould, Canada’s cultural icon, who made his “Idea of North” world famous, continues to inspire others to search for their own understanding of the mystery and inspiration of Canada’s north.

On Friday September 29, 2017, the first annual Glenn Gould Idea of North Tour will launch to celebrate Gould’s artistic legacy in the land that he called “an extraordinary place,” and the area where he went for his artistic refuge.

The tour will begin in Sault Ste. Marie, on Friday September 29, 2017 and travel to Wawa along the stunning Lake Superior coastline, returning to Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday, October 1, 2017.

During the 1960s and 70s, Gould regularly visited the region to find refuge, inspiration and peace of mind. He claimed that, in this landscape, he did his clearest thinking and the best writing of his life. Tour hosts Dale Innes, author of Seeking Solitude: Glenn Gould and the Goldberg Variations (Innes, 2015) and Johanna Rowe, Wawa historian, will take you to the areas Gould treasured the most, to walk in his footsteps and experience the idea of north that inspired his soul.

“The Glenn Gould Idea of North Tour is sure to appeal not only to the music aficionado, but to those who crave settings that have shaped and influenced Canadian artists and culture,” says Dale Innes, NORDIK Research Associate.

On Saturday evening, guests will be treated to a meal and presentations at the unique Rock Island Lodge, situated on the Superior headlands of Michipicoten Bay. Noted author and journalist Peter Goddard will share passages from his soon-to-be released book The Great Gould (Dundurn Press) focused on Gould and the influence of the northern landscape on his work.

“This tour not only focuses on the life and works of Glenn Gould, but also showcases the beautiful, idyllic scenery of Northern Algoma, in all its autumnal splendor,” says Johanna Rowe, Wawa historian and co-host of the tour. “Landmarks such as the Agawa Canyon, Montreal River Harbour and Magpie High Falls await your discovery and make an amazing canvas for the photography enthusiast.”

The Glenn Gould Idea of North Tour showcases of one of the many cultural tourism treasures found in Northern Algoma.

Tour partners include NORDIK Institute, Algoma Kinniwabi Travel Association, and The Glenn Gould Estate.

NORDIK Institute is Algoma University’s community based research institute whose goal is to build Northern Ontario’s capacity to conduct research that contributes to social, economic and environmental justice in rural, Indigenous and northern communities and provides evidence for informed policy and decision making.

What A July 1st Canada Day 150!

In the week before July 1st, 2017 in the small town of Zingerville, New Brunswick, population 2,000, they were busy organizing the events for their Canada Day celebrations. The main event was to be the unveiling at noon of a new statue out at the highway entrance to the town, across from the airport. It was a huge replica of a Canada Goose standing on top of a cement base. It was very similar to the one at Wawa, Ontario.

Other events included a parade, and a baseball tournament at the ball field behind the hockey arena. Inside the arena the rink pad was turned into a minifairground. In the afternoon the grocery stores was sponsoring a 'Summer Polar Bear Dip' with a pool full of ice cubes. In the evening there was going to be live entertainment and a beer garden.

This was going to be capped off with fireworks around 11:00 p.m.

John Bamm, the Head Mechanic at the Municipal garage, and a volunteer fireman, went to the fire station in the early afternoon of July 1st, to pick up the crate of fireworks and fuses. He was surprised when he unlocked the cupboard to see that they were not there. His first thought was that the Deputy Fire Chief, Larry Pow, must have taken them out already, especially since there was only three people that had a key. The Fire Chief had one and he had the third one.

So he locked up the cupboard and headed out to the ball field.

This was about 3:00 p.m. He was not there. A couple of volunteer firemen were waiting around.

John asked them if they knew where Larry was. The replied that they had not seen him at all today. They were just there to help with the setup, and had just arrived about 10 minutes ago.

John was baffled, and unsure what to do next. He waited about ten minutes. He decided to go back to the station and call him on the phone, but he got no response. He opened the cupboard one more time, just to be sure that he hadn't missed seeing them – although a big crate full of fireworks is pretty hard to miss, he commented to himself. He stared at the empty shelf, half hoping to conjure it into being there. But no – they were definitely not there. Then he began to look to see if Larry may have left a note. The phone rang. He answered it expecting it to be Larry. He got a chill at the first words, “Did you get my note about the fireworks?”

“No, I didn't. Who are you anyway? I was just looking around now to see if Larry had left one.

He is not here, and the fireworks are gone. What do you know about it?”

“A lot actually. You don't need to know my name. I guess my note must have fallen off the cupboard door. That's why I am calling now to follow up. I will give you the plan. I have kidnapped the fireworks, as well as Larry.

You can get them both back once you pay me a ransom of $15,000.

They are scheduled to go off at eleven, I believe. So in order to get them back and give you time to set them up, you would

need them back by ten, I guess.

It is now four, so that gives you six hours to meet my demands.

As my note indicated I will only take denominations of 20's and 50's. I trust that you will not try to short-change me. I would hate to have anything happen to Larry. He's a good guy. As I wrote, place the money in one of your canvas hose bags, and leave it in the garbage can by the front door of the tourist centre out at the Goose statue. Once I have retrieved my money, I will give you a call at the fire station to advise you where you can retrieve him and the fireworks, safe and sound. I will even be nice, and return your hose bag once I have my money. I am trusting you, so I hope you will trust me to live up to my part of the exchange.

Pretty standard kidnapping procedures, right, just like they do it on TV. So the clock is ticking.

Get going.” Bamm yelled into the phone: “Wait! I can't raise that kind of money, or the department either, on such short notice. Plus the bank is closed. It's impossible, even if we agreed to your outrageous demand. I want to talk to Larry. I need assurance that he is okay.”

“First, I don't care how you get the money – pass the hat around the fire house and the good folks down at the ball field. Or better yet, get your mother to dole it out. She has stashes of money at her mansion, I know. I am sure you can find that kind of money in no time. Be creative.

But you better get going. Time's a'wasting. But okay, here is Larry.

No secret signals between you two though.”

He heard the phone being put to the ear of Larry, he guessed.

In a pained voice, Bamm heard Larry call out, “Don't pay it. He won't hurt me. I know who it is.

He is .. ow!” He heard a struggle on the other end taking place and the phone being dropped onto the ground. Then the guy came back on the line. “That was close.

I knew I couldn't trust him. I have immobilized him for now. So get going. I will give you until ten to put the money in the drop zone.

Needless to say, if I see any cops or anyone but you, Bamm, you will never see Larry alive. But once I get my money, and I see the coast is clear, I will bring the fireworks and Larry there. Just as a precaution, I will have him strapped up with a couple of the rockets. If you or anyone tries to stop me from escaping, I will light the fuse, and 'POW' – there goes Pow. Just get me my money, and you can have your show, and everybody is happy.” He hung up.

Bamm was paralyzed at first, not knowing what to do. But then he called the Fire Chief and told him what was happening.

He in turn called the Police Chief, and the three of them met at the Fire Station shortly thereafter.

The Police Chief came up with the plan to rescue Pow and the fireworks. “I will put a few real bills on top, with paper underneath. I will have the bills laced with our blue dye, so that when he opens the hose bag, it will explode in his hands and face too if we are lucky. He will be a marked man. I will get my men

posted inside the building out there right now. Then once the drop is made, and we nab this guy, we will get him to lead us to Larry once he sees the jig is up.”

Bamm knew that it was not a good plan, with too many risks for backfiring. But the Police Chief assured him that his men would be undetectable in the dark building, waiting just inside the front door. The Fire Chief agreed, and approved the plan, overruling him. Reluctantly he had to go along with it. Just before they left, Bamm suggested that they use their own cars. Having cruisers all lined up at the TIC would give it away. The Police Chief agreed. They piled into 3 personal vehicles and headed over about 8:00 p.m. Bamm dropped the canvas bag in the can, as instructed. They just got inside when a tourist drove up in a dark four-door sedan, and parked in the parking lot. Bamm watched him from the front door.

He was a tall thin man, wearing a trench coat and fedora. It seemed like an odd outfit, Bamm thought. He was carrying a duffel bag. He began walking around the lawn, reading the display signs. Then he moved towards the goose statue. That was when Bamm got distracted by the Fire Chief. He asked if he had time to make a quick run to Timmy's for coffee and donuts. Bann turned to him and exclaimed in exasperation that it was no time to think about that right then. He shrugged his shoulders, and then began wandering around, looking at the pamphlets and displays.

He found the tiny lunch room, and came out with a box of crackers and peanut butter. He said to everyone, “Nibblers, anyone?”

Everyone said no. He shrugged his shoulders and said that was all the more for him. During this conversation none of them noticed the tourist leave. Bamm just gritted his teeth, and fumed that this was not going to go well, thanks to these bozos.

His fears began to be realized about 8:30 p.m. The burglar alarm went off at the bank. Two officers were dispatched to that site. Then five minutes later, a 911 call came in to police headquarters about a possible shooting at a residence on far side of town. That was patched in to the Chief. Another two policemen had to be dispatched to cover that incident. Then a report came in about a serious car accident about 10 miles down the highway. The caller advised that both fire and police would be required, as the one vehicle was on fire, and the highway was partially blocked.

That left just the two Chiefs to cover the TIC as planned. The kidnapper was covering all his bases to ensure there would be no trap, Bamm realized, and was grudgingly impressed at his planning skills.

His nerves got the better of him, and he told the other two that he was going to scout out the area once more. He paced around the parking lot and over to the statue and then around the building. Finally at the designated time of 10:00 p.m. he saw a car pull into the handicap parking space at the side of the building.

Bamm had the best view, as he stood at the corner of the building. He could not see if Larry was with him. He hoped that those other two amateurs would hold off, and let the two of them sort the situation out.

Bamm approached this guy, and as he got closer realized that

it was the same guy whom he assumed was just a tourist that he had seen earlier than evening.

He had been scouting out the area too. He realized that they were lucky that they had beat him first, especially as it was just by minutes. The man stopped dead in his tracks by one of the painted panels on the lawn near the front door, obviously startled at seeing Bamm there. He asked what he was doing there, and began to get agitated and nervous as started looking around, expecting the police to pop out at any moment.

Bamm spoke up right away to calm him down and assure him he was alone, as he made his way over to the garbage can. He lifted the lid, and pulled the canvas bag out. He turned around and offered it to him. He warned him first that he needed to see Larry, and know that he was okay. He got assurances that Larry was tied up in his car, with several sticks of fireworks strapped to his chest.

He showed Bamm the trigger in his coat pocket, ready to detonate at a moment's notice. In his other pocket he pulled out a lighter, obviously his first choice of detonation, if it came to that. Bamm was annoyed that he could not make out the face of this guy, but he kept that fedora well down over his eyes. Plus it was nearly dark now.

Just then the Police Chief rushed out the door and waved his revolver at the guy, ordering him to surrender. Bamm swore, and yelled at the Chief, “What do you think you are doing? Get back inside while I work this out.”

The kidnapper took that moment to make a mad dash to the Goose statue and yelled out, “I will blow up our Goose if you don't let me leave right now with my money!”

That was when Bamm notice the wooden crate full of their fireworks on top of the base. He then knew that the guy had placed the box on top of the base during his earlier visit. He blanched at the sight, and the seriousness of the situation. Having the statue destroyed would be a blow for Zingerville, but also would turn into a big news story about terrorism, given all the events that had been happening recently all over the world. That kind of publicity could be good or bad, depending on how it was handled, even though it was not terrorism here.

He panicked and called out to him that he was throwing the money to him. Just stay calm, he said to him, but also to himself. But that was when all hell broke loose. The Police Chief fired his revolver, but missed the kidnapper, and just grazed the edge of the cement pedestal.

The kidnapper flinched and then stretched up to the box, and lit the fuses. Bamm appreciated the benefit of being tall, at least in this case, as he was able to reach the fuses easily. He then picked up his money and headed over to his car. Bamm gave chase along with the Chief.

While that was going on, the Fire Chief came to the rescue, and got the box of lit sticks off the base, and cradling them in his arms headed out onto the grassy knoll away from the building and parking lot. He timed it as close as he could before flinging the box away from him, and dashed back towards the building. He just got behind the base of the statue when the fireworks went off.

So there was a spectacular showing that night, only just not

Meanwhile Bamm and the Chief were able to catch up with the kidnapper, and tackled him to the ground, just as he tried to get into his car. Fortunately, he was neutralized, and the remote detonator and lighter were pried out of his hands before he could trigger them. The Police Chief handcuffed him, and pulled him up and leaned him against the car.

He demanded to know where Larry was. He got his answer when they heard a banging coming from the trunk of the car.

He got the keys off the guy, and opened it. Bamm and the Chief were relieved to see him alive.

They quickly got the fireworks off him, and hustled him and this guy into the building for the interrogation, and assessment of Larry's condition. It was quickly determined he was okay. So they were able to turn their attention to the kidnapper.

The Police Chief finally got a good look at him. They were all shocked to see who it was.

The Police Chief spoke first in surprise, seeing it was Malcolm Fizzle, the town's Manager of Buildings & Roads. “Malcolm Fizzle, what do you think you are doing? What's the idea?”

He confessed. “Well, Chief, I have some gambling debts to pay off. I don't have the money. So I was desperate, and this seemed like a fool-proof plan, where no one would get hurt. I had a key of course, and got in and got the cupboard opened. But Larry came in as I was about to take the fireworks out. We struggled, and I was able to knock him out momentarily. I panicked. So I tied him up, and dragged him out to my car. I took him home with me. Things started to go wrong with that phone call with you, Bamm. I hadn't really come up with a foolproof plan, obviously.

I's sorry about this whole mess.

Thank goodness the Fire Chief got the box away from the Goose in time.”

This was about 10:45 p.m.. Just then the Fire Chief got a call on his cellphone. The fireman gave an update. “Chief, that accident call out on the highway was a hoax. I heard the other two calls were too. Have you seen Bamm? We need him to get over to the ball field right away, so we can get them set up at least for midnight.” The Chief laughed and said: “You won't be needing him. You all have missed the fireworks for this year. Did you not hear them go off a short time ago? We held them out at the Goose statue instead. I'll explain later. I'm coming over to make an announcement in a few minutes.”

He hung up and turned his attention to Fizzle. The Police Chief was just laying out the charges he faced. He then added sardonically, “Maybe you can work something out in prison. I bet your bookie has contacts in there so that you can get this settled. I'm sorry, but I have to charge you with at least kidnapping, assault, and extortion. I must warn you more charges may come later.

Why, Malcolm?” That was a rhetorical question, Fizzzle realized, so he said nothing. He was escorted to jail, and the others went their separate ways, glad to have that over with. *Let us hope our Canada 150 Day goes better, especially the unveiling of the new Wawa Goose statue. Concerned that the final plans for the highway meant it would not be built through the community, Al and a group of businessmen came up with the idea of the Wawa Goose statue to stop tourists on their Trans-Canada travels.

On September 17, 1960 the first Wawa Goose statue was unveiled at the opening of the last link of the Ontario and Lake Superior section of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The Turcott’s operated a tourist lodge in Michipicoten River Village in the 1960’s and a unique tourist operation on the banks of the Michipicoten River called Fort Friendship in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Known locally as “the Turcott Project”, the imitation fort was constructed on the banks of the Michipicoten River, not far upstream from the original location of the 200 year old Hudson’s Bay Co. Post.

This popular tourist attraction came complete with log palisade walls, a museum, gift shop, wishing well, tower of Prime Ministers, and a small church made out of glass bottles.

Al Turcott died suddenly in 1974 and was buried next to Fort Friendship. Agnes eventually moved to Pincher Creek, Alberta in 1985 to be closer to her family. Agnes was 92 when she passed away in 2001 and had her remains reunited with her husband on the banks of the Michipicoten River.

Agnes is best remembered for her great love of history and leaving a lasting legacy with her popular book on the history of the Wawa area called “Land of the Big Goose”.

Originally published in 1962, the book has been redesigned and reprinted numerous times over the years. It continues to provide readers with a glimpse of the fascinating stories and accomplishments of the pioneers, like Agnes and Al, who were determined to make Michipicoten and Wawa a healthy and thriving Northern Ontario community.

This is a big week for Wawa.

While we join in celebrating the 150th of both Ontario and Canada, we are also saying good-bye to our beloved Wawa Goose #2 and welcoming Wawa Goose #3. It only seems right that this week’s article submission be focused on Al and Agnes Turcott, a couple whose love of the Wawa area and entrepreneurial spirit and vision gave birth to the idea of a goose statute greeting visitors to our unique community.

Born in 1907, Bernard Alphonse Turcott came to Wawa in 1939 with the idea that he would be employed for 6 months assisting with the construction of the crushing plant at the New Helen Mine.

Deeply attracted to the area, Al soon sent for his wife Agnes and two sons to join him.

Born Agnes Lindgren in Goren, Missouri in 1909, she spent her youth on the family homestead at Biggar, Saskatchewan. At the age of 18 she was a pioneer teacher earning $400 a year.

In 1944, the Turcott family began operating Turcott’s Dry Goods & Clothing Store at 33 Broadway Avenue, across from the Lakeview Hotel. Turcott’s Dry Goods was an important store supplying the growing community with everything from clothes and toys to kitchenware and books. Both Agnes and Al were community minded people and actively promoted the town and supported the creation of crucial community services.

Agnes was an active resident taking a keen interest in the local history, politics and welfare of her new beloved town. She was a candidate for the New Democratic Party in Algoma in 1968, and also completed a number of terms as a Town Councillor. Agnes and Al published their own town paper called the Wawa Echo in the mid-1950’s. They were fierce supporters of retaining the name Wawa during the infamous 12 year Jamestown vs. Wawa dispute. Both were also very active in lobbying the provincial government for a highway ‘out’.

Their passion and perseverance were also responsible for Wawa’s greatest attraction, the Wawa Goose.

Al Turcott played an integral role in securing the Lake Superior route of the proposed Trans-Canada Highway through Wawa.
