Seniors Expo Offers Info For All Ages

Article & photos by Barb Fisher   Yes it's true, our community is aging and what a wonderful time of life. It's great being a senior in Wawa. The Seniors Expo, held last Wednesday in the Community Centre was a buzz with more than 20 exhibitors offering information in innovation making life enjoyable in our senior years.   Representatives offered great information and friendly assistance in many areas: - Northern Credit Union - convenient one-stop banking facility which has enjoyed serving Wawa customers for many years and is familiar with many of our senior's banking needs. The institution is proudly launching their new concept "The Northern All Terrain Account"; a savings account, chequing account and line of credit all rolled into one. Our financially savvy seniors will be sure to check it out. - Royal Bank - besides offering seniors friendly, knowledgeable banking assistance, planning your next exciting trip destination can be simplified by helpful assistance from the bank personnel. So sit back and enjoy the ride. - OPP - love it, or hate it; the internet is here to stay. Cybercrime claims victims without borders and loves seniors - don't let it be you. Report any suspected invasion of your rights to the OPP. Now that mobility-challenged seniors are on the move, the use of personal mobility devices, electric and motorized scooters necessitates the operator to know the insurance needs and

local bylaws where these vehicles are permitted. OPP officers can help keep everyone legal and safe. - TOPS - Take Off Pounds Sensibly - has been operating in Wawa for more than 30 years. The group meets every Tuesday at noon at the Lady Dunn Health Centre. TOPS offers a support group for all ages and besides shedding those extra pounds, you can forge friendships and share your weight loss stories. - Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 429 - Mary Anne Pearson and Comrade Larry Harvey very proudly exhibited two books featuring the war service of our Canadian heroes, 12 of them coming from Wawa and our area. There are at least 50 local veterans whose story information has been an ongoing passion of Comrade Bill Moore in compiling these histories. These books are available at our Wawa library, and of course on-line. - Wawa Family Health Team (WFHT) - Stand Up Program - exercises that increase muscle strength and improve balance, and flexibility. The best way to reduce your risk of a fall and to be independent is to be physically active. Contact Norma Kauk at the WFHT to join the next program. - KinesioFit - Kayley Kettles is a Registered Kinesiologist and has relocated to the old Praxair building on Mission Road. She monitors injury due to osteoporosis, offers exercise therapy and professional treatment in maintaining healthy bones.

- Algoma Public Health Melanie Rail offered information promoting vaccines. Three kinds of vaccines important for people in their senior years should be considered: pneumonia vaccine, Adacel protecting against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis and the vaccine to protect against shingles. All of these diseases pose a very high risk after the age of 50. - Canadian Red Cross - there are many well established community assistance programs offered and their most recent program is very exciting Priority Assistance to Transition Home (PATH). This program helps patients make the transition from hospital to home safely, smoothly and comfortably. Transitional Care Workers travel home with the client and along the way may assist in picking up prescriptions and groceries, settling them back into their home and providing support in attending follow up medical appointments. - Foot Care (Nursing) - Louise Moran is a Registered Practical Nurse who goes above and beyond the coveted "foot massage". She attends clients in there homes treating the very important foot problems that sometimes gets underrated... but in essence, the root of our mobility. - Wawa & Area Victim Services - a very integral part of our community's well-being. Specially trained volunteers provide short term confidential, emotional and practical assistance to victims of crime, disasters and tragic circum-

stance. Among these services, they offer great information on Elder Abuse and how to report on stopping it. - Alzheimer Society - for someone diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, it is upsetting news for both the individual and the care givers posing much anxiety for the future. The Society provides information to learn more about the disease, caregiving, coping strategies, telephone counsellor or support group, registering the person with Safely Home program to ensure lost persons get help and locating services in the community. - ARCH Connect - Algoma Palliative Care Team - supports people living with life-threatening illnesses. It provides care for the patient's every need, and for those of their loved ones, whether medical, psychological, social, spiritual, or practical. - Gilmartin Funeral Home Ltd. - a few years ago I experienced the death of a loved one and taking the farewell journey with Funeral Director Valerie Fahrer at the healm made the experience much less stressful. Valerie is a true professional who can give you the peace of mind to focus on your loved one's life and leave everything else to her. She is amazing. - North East Community Care Access Centre - provides professional services: nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, nutritional counselling, social work, speech therapy and support services in personal care, short term equipment rental and medical supplies. - Motion Specialties - a company dedicated to providing health care products and services tailored to meet your specific needs.
