EDC SPONSORS WOOD HEAT TRADESHOW
Following up on the recently announced Wood Heat Rebate Program our Economic Development Corporation (EDC) last week held a very interesting, thorough and comprehensive tradeshow and work shop to explain everything you need to know about the exciting new progression in home heating systems. With the rising cost of fossil fuel and growing concern for the environment, modern wood heating is an eco-friendly and economical alternative (or addition) to conventional fossil fuel heating systems. When harvested in conjunction with sustainable forestry, wood is a renewable and environmentally-responsible form of energy. Burning wood releases as much CO2 as trees absorb in their lifetime making the process CO2 neutral that does not contribute to climate change. As a local energy source, wood is
affordable and independent of wide price fluctuations, and while reducing home heating costs, the practice encourages growth of local businesses related to renewable energy. Presenters at the Tradeshow were pumped, prepared and very knowledgeable at their informational booths and the curling rink area was filled with progressive thinking people ready to join the future in their heating needs. - Wood Heat Organization Inc - a nonprofit, nongovernmental agency dedicted to the responsible use of wood as a home heating fuel. A very knowledgeagle representative offered much information on firewood harvested sustainably, burned cleanly and efficiently and using its energy to reduce the net greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming. HeatMaster from Goulais River presented a
thorough review of their G Series high efficiency wood burning furnaces for inside or out of doors. The Easy Clean handle makes cleaning the heat exchange tubes a breeze, the Smokeless Loading handle provides clean, easy loading, and the high efficiency of the furnaces use up to 50% less wood than conventional furnaces. In addition to supplying domestic heat and hot water, their G Series furnace can provide heat for baseboard heaters, hot tubs and pools, livestock structures, pressure washers, snow-melt for driveways, and clothes dryers. - Biothermic Wood Energy Systems from Thunder Bay showcased their FHG system which comes complete with all required components for safety as well as optional electric backup and domestic hot water all in one package. The presentation also featured the ComboMax Ultra which provides thermal storage, domestic hot water and an essential electric backup boiler all in one tank. Vi e s s m a n Manufacturing from Waterloo displayed information on their complete line of commercial high-efficiency fossil fuel boilers, advanced biomass heating, and solar thermal system which is ideal to heat domestic hot water and to provide space heating backup. By integrating solar, you can offset your domestic hot water heating cost and further reduce your environmental footprint. - LacWood representatives targetted wood pellet stoves as the preferred heat
engine as wood pellets are a value-added product which uses materials left over from the manufacture of lumber. Wood pellets are carbon neutral which when burned emit the same amount of carbon dioxide as is absorbed by a growing tree. Unlike wood stoves, pellet stoves require minimal clearance from walls and do not require an expensive chimney, use an inexpensive direct vent system, and storing pellets takes much less space than cord wood. - Other presenters eagerly demonstrated and explained their focus in the effort of spreading the good news in wood heating: Maine Energy Systems, Stove Builder International Inc, Quebec, and Wawa businesses Home Building Centre, J.J. Firewood, Russ Jones Firewood and Wawa Rent-All. The driving force behind the presentation was the EDC's offer of financial help to refund up to 50% of eligible costs under the Wood Heat Rebate Program when upgrading an existing wood heat appliance or switching or supplementing an oil or propane heat system. Local WETT representative Dave Westaway answered all questions about the WETT inspec-

tion process. The Program runs from May 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019 and has specific steps that must be taken with health and safety being the target: • complete the application • shop for a new appliance considering pre-installation consultation help • obtain a building permit • install a qualifying wood heat appliance • obtain a WETT inspection • dispose of the old appliance and obtain a Certificate of Disposal • submit the rebate form with necessary receipts to the EDC office. The two day Tradeshow was a huge success attesting to the interest of our community in moving forward in a determined and sustainable future for our children. And the lucky winners of the draw: Wawa Green Project Prize Pack - Bev Charbonneau, $25 ValuMart BBQ Meat Pack Marcel Terris, Cooler prize Yannick Casavant, and Pellet BBQ - Betty Dumont. Thank you so much: hard working and dedicated Wawa EDC personnel, all presenters and speakers, and everyone who attended. Good job; stay cozy and green!
