Hawk Fishing Derby

1st Prize Youth: Arrianna Plante Article & photos by Barb Fisher Over 37 years now kids, parents, grandparents, and friends from Hawk, Wawa and beyond have suited up, picked their favourite spot on Hawk Lake and kicked off spring break week with a fantastic Saturday of fishing, socializing and swapping fish stories. This year, as in many a derby year, the sun goddess blessed us with a beautiful warm sunny day, and according to the leader board, anglers broke a sweat landing the big one.

Winners in the youths' division: 1st Arrianna Plante 4.4 lb pike, 2nd Hunter Troutman 2.9 lb whitefish, and 3rd Chase DeRoche 2.4 lb whitefish. In the adult division: 1st Dave Dupuis 9.3 lb pike, 2nd Barb Thorne 5.0 lb pike, and 3rd Diedre Dupuis 3.7 lb pike.

Congratulations everyone.

Mike Mantha, our local MPP was present at the derby and is proving to be a very handy guy. Besides him and his buddies helping to push my car out of a snowbank earlier, he did the honours drawing the winners of the raffle draw.

This year the winners were: 1st prize of $1,000 to Tonya Evely, 2nd prize of $300 to Ryan MacIntyre, and 3rd prize of $200 to Derek Bradley. The MacIntyre family sure have the luck of the Irish as in last years drawing of the raffle draw, dad Monty MacIntyre took 1st and 2nd draw prizes, and Ryan winning 3rd prize last year is continuing the winning streak again this year.

The Class EA is a streamlined process to plan transmission projects with a predictable range of effects that can be addressed through the use of feasible environmental mitigation and/or protection measures. AVIS DE MODIFICATION Projet d’expansion du poste de transformation de Wawa Hydro One Networks Inc. (Hydro One) vous informe qu’une modification a été apportée à l’évaluation environnementale (EE) de portée générale concernant le projet d’expansion du poste de transformation (PT) de Wawa. Le projet a été initialement évalué après le processus d’examen préalable qui s’est terminé le 19 décembre 2017. L’expansion vise à faciliter le raccordement de la nouvelle ligne de transport qui relierait le PT de Lakehead au PT de Wawa, couramment appelée la ligne de raccordement Est-Ouest. L’expansion du PT étant maintenant intégrée dans le grand projet de la nouvelle infrastructure de transport, Hydro One évaluera le projet d’expansion après l’achèvement de l’EE de portée générale complète. La zone couverte par le projet d’expansion du PT de Wawa est située au nord du lac Anjigami et au sud-est de la municipalité de Wawa (voir la carte).

Les travaux au PT de Wawa consisteront à : • Installer de nouveaux équipements électriques, tels que disjoncteurs et sectionneurs; • Reconfigurer des composants électriques existants en vue du raccordement de la nouvelle ligne de transport; • Installer un nouveau bâtiment relais, qui abritera des appareils électroniques cruciaux pour la sûreté, la fiabilité et la sécurité du réseau d’électricité.

Pour ces nouveaux aménagements, le PT de Wawa devra être agrandi sur une zone d’environ un demi-hectare (0,6 ha) au nord et à l’ouest de la propriété que Hydro One a récemment acquise auprès du propriétaire foncier voisin.

ÉVALUATION ENVIRONNEMENTALE DE PORTÉE GÉNÉRALE Mars 2019

L’EE de portée générale est un moyen d’évaluation simplifié efficace en ce qu’elle garantit la mise en place de mesures d’atténuation ou de protection réalisables pour les petits projets de transport d’électricité dont les effets sur l’environnement sont prévisibles et gérables. Sous réserve des résultats de l’EE complète, les travaux d’expansion du PT pourraient débuter dès octobre 2019, avec l’entrée en exploitation du nouveau PT prévue pour octobre 2021.

Nous souhaitons connaître vos commentaires Hydro One tiendra une séance d’information publique pour donner aux communautés des Premières Nations et Métis, au public et aux autres parties intéressées l’occasion de mieux comprendre les changements apportés à l’évaluation environnementale et de communiquer leurs commentaires. Mayor Rody opened the meeting by welcoming Maury O'Neill on her first council meeting attendance in her capacity of CAO for the Municipality of Wawa. He further congratulated everyone involved in the success of the recent Ice Fishing Derby. It was another great event attracting many anglers from all over Ontario who contributed much support in businesses and services that Wawa has to offer.

Council accepted the resignation from Steve Haney from the Wawa Public Library Board effective January 25th, and from the Wawa Heritage Committee effective January 29th, 2019.

Council accepted the annual premium quotation for 2019 Municipal Insurance Program renewal to Frank Cowan Co in partnership with Dawson & Keenan Insurance Ltd in the amount of $124,916 excluding taxes.

Council previously had accepted the proposal received from Northern Lights Ford for a 2018 F450 Super Duty Truck equipped with Plow and Dump in the amount of $59,757 plus HST. Due to delays in awarding the RFP, the afore mentioned truck became unavailable and staff was required to purchase a 2019 same model and equipment at a cost of $61,249 plus HST; a difference of $1,492. The difference in the amount of the purchase is within the capital budget amount of $80,500 and Council approved the increased rate to purchase the truck, equipped with plow and dump.

Section 223.3 of the Municipal Act authorizes the Municipality to appoint an Integrity Commissioner who performs functions with

respect to the application of the Code of Conduct for members of Council and others. Council appointed Mary E. Pascuzzi Law Professional Corporation as the Integrity Commissioner to perform functions with respect to the application of the Code of Conduct for members of Council and other procedures, rules or policies governing their ethical behaviour to take effect March 5th, 2019.

Bylaws given three readings and passed: - 3177-19 - to confirm the proceedings of Council at its meeting of March 5th.

- 3178-19 - to adopt Policy HR-002: Workplace Harassment and Discrimination Prevention - 3179-19 - to authorize the Municipality to enter into an agreement with the Royal Bank respecting the provision of banking and security for the Municipality.

Their primary care practices were randomized to deliver either an integrated structured weight management program or standard care. The intervention included diabetes and hypertension drug withdrawal, total diet replacement of 850 calories/day for 12 to 20 weeks, stepped food reintroduction for 2 to 8 weeks, and structured support for maintaining weight loss.

At 12 months, 24% of patients in the intervention group had lost 15 kg or more and 46% had diabetes remission.

By 24 months, weight loss of 15 kg or more was still

more common in the intervention group (11% vs. 2% of the control group). Intervention participants also had a greater likelihood of diabetes remission (36% vs. 3%).

The authors write: "Our findings make a strong case that intensive weight management should be included as a firstline option in routine care for people with type 2 diabetes to target early remission from a potentially devastating progressive disease."

Weight Loss And Diabetes Remission Article Submitted By Dr. Erle Kirby This article describes the findings of a study of the effect of weight loss on type 2 diabetes. This is the common type which often comes on with older age and weight gain.

Unfortunately it is also becoming more common in youngeraged persons because of the obesity epidemic in Canada.

In this article remission from diabetes means that the Hemoglobin A1C decreased to a level that moved many of these persons from a level indicative of frank diabetes to one indicating pre-diabetes.

Pre-diabetes is thought to carry fewer risks for heart disease, and some of the other complications of frank diabetes.

BMI is a measure of weight compared to height which is used to indicate whether a person is overweight.

A measure of 25 to 30 indicates that the person is overweight while a value over 30 indicates obesity.

I think that one can draw a clear lesson from this study. It is that weight loss can cure type 2 diabetes. (This makes a lot of sense since obesity seems to be the main cause of this condition).

This study shows that major benefits can be gained by those who are highly motivated to take charge of their health.

Primary Care Weight-Loss Intervention Tied to Durable Diabetes Remission

Researchers enrolled roughly 300 patients with a BMI of 27–45 who had type 2 diabetes but weren't insulin-dependent.

Young's General Store c 1971 Just ten short years after the last link of Highway 17 opened and the iconic Wawa Goose was erected, Wawa was experiencing a minimum of 50,000 visitors per year at the tourist kiosk. The new traffic coming to Wawa led to an unprecedented increase in new businesses and hotels.

Our wonderful community was becoming more and more well known. A certain musician with a knack for writing about communities in Ontario was commissioned by local hotel owner Norm Cornell to record a song about our beloved Goose. His name was Stompin’ Tom Connors.

Maybe you have heard of him?

Throughout Stompin’ Tom’s long musical career, he wrote a number of songs about towns in Northern Ontario. “Little Wawa" was released in 1973.

The song tells the story of the Wawa Goose (Little Wawa) and her lover named Gander Goo. After the loss of her mate, Little Wawa refused to leave the area and took her perch looking over Highway 17 to let you know that you have entered the town that bears her name. The song quickly became an unofficial anthem for Wawa and is still played by Stompin’ Tom tribute bands when they perform locally.

The 1970’s were not kind to education in Wawa. Both the Sir James Dunn public School and the Michipicoten High School buildings caught fire in 1974. Sir James Dunn Public School was completely

rebuilt on its current site, while Michipicoten High School underwent a number of renovations and upgrades.

From 1973 to 1980 two gold mines operated on the site of the former Surluga Gold Mine under the names of Pango Gold Mines and Pursides Gold Mines Inc. In 1971, one of Wawa’s most iconic businesses opened their doors. Bill and Anita Young opened Young’s General Store and quickly won over the hearts of locals and tourists alike. The original Young’s General Store only lasted eight years before a fire destroyed the whole building in April of 1979. Bill and Anita would not let their business end there.

They quickly rebuilt the store and it is now the Young’s General Store that everyone can visit for a one-of-a-kind shopping experience today.

This is the eleventh chapter in “Wawa – 150 Years, 18672017” written by N. Dunham, and published by the Town of Wawa, Wawa EDC and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. Copies can be purchased at the Wawa EDC office at 96 Broadway Avenue.

On that Wednesday night, Henry paced around the house after fleeing the scene of his crime at Mac's. He had sat down to watch TV, but couldn't settle down. He was still in shock about running into Alice as he was heading out the door.

“So close to a clean getaway!

Of all people, why Alice?

What was she doing there anyway? She was supposed to be at Helen's place baking!”

These were his initial thoughts as he paced the floors. Then just as he entered the doorway of the bedroom, he stopped dead in his tracks. He looked at the open closet door, and had 2 thunderbolt thoughts in a row – did she recognize me?

Did she recognize the dress?

He automatically raised his left hand to rub his freshly shaved chin, which normally helped him think. This time it made him realize that he could still smell the perfume on his skin.

He panicked – I gotta get this smell off me! That first shower when he first got home had obviously only helped a bit.

He was just going to head back to the bathroom to take that hot shower, when the phone rang in the living room.

He jumped at the sound. He dashed down the hall into the living room, and picked it up--: “Hello?” he answered nervously.

“Hi, it's me. Um, I'm at the hospital. Can you come up and get me? I am just about ready to come home.”

“What? What are you doing at the hospital?”, Henry asked with both concern about how serious her shot was, and relief that he hadn't killed her.

“It's a long story. I'll tell you later – just come and get me. I'm in Emerg. The police have just finished questioning me. Now all I want to do is get home and crawl into bed.

Please hurry.” She sounded on the verge of tears.

“Yes, sure, I'll be right there.” He hung up, and immediately grabbed his coat and truck keys. He totally forgot about the shower.

When he got to the Emergency Department, he saw the investigating police officer heading out the side door. He recognized him, and his heart lurched. It was Det. James Bond, the sharpest cop on the force. He had solved several cases recently, including the vandalism at the Wawa Goose tourism centre a couple of years ago, by successfully and doggedly pursuing all leads until he caught the criminals.

“Oh, oh, I hope he doesn't succeed this time,” Henry thought to himself. But his thoughts were interrupted by a nurse approaching him. “Your wife

We have given her a mild sedative. Once she gets home, put her to bed, and let her sleep this off. She'll be fine in the morning. You will have to change her bandage though, and check for any infection.

She went on to explain: “ I have some paperwork for you to sign. Here, sign on the dotted line.” She went through this formality several times. She apologized for all the paperwork. Once he had signed everything to her satisfaction she ripped his copies off the forms, and grabbed her clip board with all her copies of the paperwork, apologized for not having a wheelchair to take her out. Hospital cutbacks and we are short of them here in this Department, she explained in a tone that was a mixture of frustration, anger and stress before dashing out of the room. Henry didn't have a chance to sympathize with her, but he didn't care too much. His concern was how Alice was doing. So now he was left alone with her.

“Here, let me get your coat on. Let's get out of here. Like the nurse said, a good night's sleep is what you need. You can tell me all about it in the morning.”

But once they were in the truck, all Alice wanted to do was talk about the experience, albeit more to herself than him.

She was going over it all in her mind, and just saying it out loud to make it real. .....

“It all happened so fast. I was just going into the store when this robber barged into me, flaying this gun around.

I just heard a bang, and then he shoved me into the store.

Funny – he said sorry as he dashed out the door. It had to be a man – with the force of the shove, and the deep voice.

The dress and hood were just a disguise, I bet. Well, anyway, I flew into the shelves of candies and chips, and I knocked them all over, as the stuff went flying all over the floor, and me too. Then I felt this blood trickling down my arm. As soon as I saw that, I fainted.

Next thing I knew

was the clerk standing over me, dabbing a bunch of Kleenex on my arm. She looked pretty shook up herself. I guess getting robbed at gun point would do that. Then the police were there. They saw the mess we were in, and thankfully one of the officers escorted me and the clerk up to the hospital. It was Janine Clark that was on tonight. Once I had settled down, they questioned me – not that I had anything much to say to help them out. It all happened so fast....”

Her rambling conversation was interrupted when Henry drove into the driveway, and shut off the engine. He got out, and opened up the passenger door, got her out, and into the house. He gingerly took her coat off, and walked her along to the bedroom. She didn't put up much resistance.

She seemed to be talked out, as the sedative was taking effect.

He helped her undress, got her into her pajamas, and into bed. He sat down on the edge of it, and stroke her hair, and kissed her on the cheek. He murmured to her, “Just go to sleep now. It's all right.” Her breathing soon became more even, and was soon on the verge of drifting off to sleep.

Her last words were, “What's that lovely perfume I smell.

Mmmm – nice.” Then she was gone, sleeping peacefully.

Unfortunately, Henry didn't sleep as peacefully. “Oh, my God, what if she remembers that smell tomorrow. I gotta try to get rid of any trace tonight. Another shower for me, and get some air freshener in here. I hope that will do the trick.” So he got busy. Then he got himself undressed and crawled into bed beside her, and lay awake for a long time, before finally drifting off into a restless sleep.

He thought he did a good job of finally getting rid of that smell, and indeed he did.

However, he overlooked a couple of small things that caused him some grief later. Since the bedroom lights were out, and just the night light was on, he neglected checking the dresser thoroughly. Sitting in front of the mirror was a small bottle of nail polish, and that bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume....

New Staff At The Wawa Economic Development Office The Wawa EDC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Sylvia Lesage has joined the organization as Business Administrator.

Sylvia brings a variety of skills and experience to the position and is a graduate of Laurentian University’s Bachelor of Business Administration program with work experience in non-profit business management, economic development and business writing. “Sylvia brings a wide variety of skills to the position that the EDC was excited to see in a new employee. Sylvia has hit the ground running to ensure during this time of staff transition at the EDC, the office continues to provide entrepreneurs and businesses with the support they need and expect,” said Andy Stevens, Chair.

After leading Wawa’s Economic Development organization for 15 years, Maury O’Neill resigned recently to take on the position of CAOTreasurer for the Municipality of Wawa. “I have loved working with incredible leaders over the past 15 years; people who serve as selfless volunteers who strive to make a positive difference to our community’s well-being. It has been a true honour and privilege to serve the community as an employee of the EDC and I look forward to working with Sylvia

as she continues to embrace and improve all the wonderful opportunities that are sitting at Wawa’s doorstep,” said Maury O’Neill Also departing the EDC at the end of February was Jessie Labonte, Executive Assistant.

Jessie begins her maternity leave and plans to return to the EDC next year. Jessie held several positions at the EDC over the past five years and the Board and staff wish Jessie all the joy in the world as she welcomes a new baby into her family soon.

A recruitment process has begun to hire a Director of Economic Development and applications are being taken until Friday, March 15, 2019.

OBITUARY BELANGER, Roland Joseph “Roly” Passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Lady Dunn Health Centre, Wawa on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at the age of 82 years. Beloved husband of Ann for 62 years. Loving father of Lynda Gilchrist (Tony), Kevin Belanger (Maureen) and Julie Lundquist (Gary Currie).

Proud grandfather of Angela (Steve), Trevor (Janet), Sarah, Conor (Lindy), Moria (Dave), Kevin Jr., Adam (Hope), Brandon (Sandra), Amanda (Jake) and C.J. and great grandfather of Sydney, London, Arlow, Evie, Emily, Kristin, Emily and Luke. Roly was predeceased by his sisters Margaret (late Fred), Libby (late Jean-Marie) and Annette (late Bill). He will be remembered by his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Roly left a lasting and positive impact on his numerous friends and acquaintances. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Basil's Church, White River on Saturday May 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Michael Asorgoe officiating. Wawa Volunteers Make 2019 Derby A Great Success Article By Anne Owen Once again, the amazing volunteers in Wawa banded together to make the 28th annual Wawa Ice Fishing Derby a great success.

For Thursday evening’s setup, Wawa’s wonderful volunteer firefighters, assisted by family and friends, spent hours setting up boards, tables and chairs for the 1334 Derby participants. Many thanks to each and every one of that organization. Once they were finished, the Derby Board of Directors, Scott, Shayne, Michelle, Garth, Rob, Gayle and Anne, continued with the detailed organization for registration.

Friday’s registration is always a marathon event.

Line-ups for participants were long, but our capable registration team of 26 kept track of tickets, give-aways, fishing flags and “chits”, without once losing their friendly smiles and helpful manners.

Many, many thanks go out to Mary and Andy, Claudette and Judy, Holly and Bev, Diane and Claire, Carol and Steve, Cathy and Mark, Rob, Eric and Liz, Carol and Joel, Gayle, Cathy and Lesley, and Norma and Tara. Michelle capably handled questions on rules, while Kathleen kept Scott and Anne “cool” on new registrations. Many of our registration volunteers are veterans, returning year after year to help the Derby. Thank you! To our new team members – the job looks daunting at first, but each and every one of you per-

formed wonderfully. Thank you!

Saturday and Sunday’s volunteers were involved with the actual fishing. Louis, fishweigher emeritus, returned again to the weigh scales, washing and weighing fish and generally keeping things on an even keel with his quiet attitude, terrific sense of humour, and his ability to “bring light” to the fish table. Sheila, our computer guru, kept track of fish caught, participants’ names, cities of origin and numbers, while Chayse and friends gutted and filleted each fish according to the fisherman’s request. Heartfelt thanks to each and every one of this great team. At this time, thanks go out to the fishermen/women themselves. At least 75% of the fish caught were donated to the Wawa Foodbank for their use in the community.

Special thanks must go the Wawa SnoRiders for their trail-grooming efforts, and to the many patrollers and hut officials who worked on the ice of the 3 Derby lakes.

Many, many thanks go out to Richie, for stepping up yet again to assist in a band equipment problem. Also, we greatly appreciate the assistance of the Rotary 2018/2019 exchange student, Eric Schulz, for his help on Friday and Saturday. SNC Lavalin Debacle Is Dividing The Government Two weeks back, I wrote about the resignation of Jody WilsonRaybould as a difficult circumstance for the government. That was before she appeared as a witness at Justice Committee which is investigating the events that led to her being shuffled out of the Justice portfolio and eventual resignation from cabinet. When she appeared at committee last week, all of Ottawa seemed to stand still. Her testimony tore holes in the government’s narrative and outlined systemic, sustained political pressure from the Prime Minister and his officials to interfere in the decision of the Public Prosecution Service to deny SNCLavalin (SNCL) a deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) for charges of corruption and fraud.

The subsequent resignation of Jane Philpott from the federal cabinet only added to the government’s grief. That was followed up by testimony from long-time advisor and former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Gerald Butts at Justice committee which seemed to only confirm the notion that the Justice Minister was free to make any decision she wanted on SNCL receiving a DPA, so long as it was the decision the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) wanted.

ment’s intentions with respect to SNCL, even to the point that she was reminded of a shareholder’s meeting - on more than one occasion - and the company’s desire to have the case cleared up in advance of that. She recounted that the PMO told her they could arrange to have opinion pieces written in support of a DPA which shows how deep their reach into news outlets is. She also told committee she was reminded of the political cost for prosecuting SNCL and how it could affect the outcome of the Quebec provincial election. That she stood resolute in the face of this pressure is incredible.

That she was so quickly punished for sticking to her principles is telling.

The government is defending itself on the pretext of jobs. They claim up to 9,000 people will lose their jobs if SNCL is found guilty and subsequently forbidden to bid on government contracts for ten years. This ignores the fact that other firms would not only win those contracts, but the possibility that they could also hire the experienced professionals currently working for SNCL. In the end the biggest cost would be paid in the upper echelons of the corporate structure.

With that in mind, the NDP asked, where the urgency was for this government when GM announced its

plans to shutter the plant in Oshawa, when Sears closed abruptly leaving its pensioners on the sidelines, or when steel and aluminum tariffs threatened (to this day) thousands of jobs across the country? Or, what makes SNC Lavalin’s fate more important to this government than those jobs?

But is this really an issue, or just standard operating procedure for the government? Jane Philpott's resignation from Cabinet points us toward the belief that this is a big issue.

Her abrupt departure supports Jody Wilson Raybould’s version of the story, not that of the Prime Minister or his inner circle. It clearly points to PMO interference and the use of improper pressure on the Attorney General.

New Democrats are saying the Prime Minister may have missed his best opportunity by refusing to deal in the truth when Jody Wilson Raybould resigned and are concerned the government still hasn’t ruled out the DPA. Canadians deserve to know what that information is, which is why the NDP are calling for an independent public inquiry and for the government to waive solicitor-client privilege so Jody Wilson-Raybould can tell the whole story. After that, Canadians will be able to decide for themselves.

The Crime Scene ___________________ la scène du crime COLD WEATHER DRIVING (Wawa, ON) - Extreme cold and snowy weather have presented numerous challenges for members of the motoring public lately. The Superior East Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to the public to consider taking safety measures that could save your life, or assist someone else during the winter months.

If you start your vehicle to warm it up prior to leaving home, be mindful of criminals who target idling vehicles in driveways. If possible, keep the vehicle doors locked while the vehicle is warming up.

A buildup of snow and/or a foggy or iced over windshield or windows can drastically reduce your visibility while driving. Ensure that your vehicle is clear of snow, and that you have good visibility in all directions before heading out onto the roadway. If this is not done properly, the OPP may lay Highway Traffic Act (HTA) charges.

When planning a trip, it is a good practice to provide your itinerary to a friend or family member so they can call for assistance if you don't arrive at your scheduled destinations.

This is especially important when venturing out on snowmobiles. The sooner you are reported missing, the sooner someone will come looking for you.

If you are travelling in extreme cold temperatures, bring extra warm winter clothing items such as snow pants, winter boots, mitts and a winter hat. If your vehicle breaks down or you get stuck somewhere, having these items will greatly increase your chances of survival.

If your vehicle goes off the road or gets stuck in deep snow, ensure that you keep a window slightly open if the vehicle is still running. Clear the area around your exhaust pipe so that fumes can escape away from your vehicle. There is still a risk that carbon monoxide (CO) from the exhaust may enter the cabin of the vehicle even with a clear tailpipe.

Having a slightly open window will allow you to keep the vehicle warm while maintaining a fresh air supply to reduce the risk of CO poisoning.

These are only a few of many tips to consider during winter in Northern Ontario.

COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVER CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED (White River, ON) - On February 23, 2019, at approximately 8:46 a.m., an off-duty member of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a northbound commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driving erratically on Highway 17 in Vasiloff Township.

The officer followed the CMV until it parked at a business in White River Township where the driver was subsequently placed under arrest.

As a result of the investigation, Craig DYER, a 52-yearold male from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, was charged with the following: • Dangerous operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC), • Operation while impaired alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC. The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, on February 27, 2019.

MALE CHARGED WITH SPOUSAL ASSAULT (Wawa, ON) - On February 25, 2019, at approximately 4:40 p.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic dispute in the Town of Wawa, Ontario.

As a result of the investigation, a 47-year-old male, from Wawa, Ontario, was charged with the following: • Assault - Spousal (two counts), contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC), • Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1) (a) of the CC. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa, Ontario on April 8, 2019. The OPP will not be releasing the name in order to protect the identity of the victim.
