Hawk Fishing Derby
Article & photos by Barb Fisher Over 36 years now parents, grandparents, friends and kids from Hawk, Wawa and beyond have suited up, picked their favourite spot on Hawk Lake and kicked off spring break week with a fantastic Saturday of fishing, socializing and swapping fish stories. This year the catches were disappointingly low in weight, but just blame it on the Wawa Derby last weekend that had scared off the big ones. However, it was quite the rush for the youngsters to realize that their catch, even though small may be a winner. Winners in the kids' division: 1st Cruz Dupuis 1.7 lb pike, 2nd Oliver Dumont 1.1 lb pike, and 3rd Parker Desrochers .7 lb pike. In the adult division: 1st Steve Gratton 2.3 lb pike, 2nd Dave Dupuis 2.1 lb white fish, and 3rd Wayne Ruff l.6 lb white fish. Congratulations everyone. Top winners got first pick of
the vast array of goodies lining the walls of the hall: fishing equipment, tools, drones, clothing apparel, kids toys and games offered a treasure for every age and taste. Gift certificates are always a big hit with the adults where restaurants Embassy, North of 17, Subway, and Wawa Motor Inn offered meals, Sam's Place and Jim's Barber Shop will trim your hair, Minnow Dan offered minnows, Davidson Fuels gave propane canister fills, Canadian Tire, Paul's Custom Glass, Sleep Inn, and Dawson Keenan contributed by offering gift certificates from their businesses. The annual raffle draw is a sought after part of the derby whereby only 250 tickets are sold ahead for cash prizes of $700, $300 and $200. This is an integral money generator for the derby conveners as the proceeds enable ongoing expenses to be met in offering family events and the never ending community hall upgrades. I have been covering the Hawk Derby now for
seven years and there always unfolds some extraordinary unexplained mystery. This year the winners of the raffle draw are....without any tampering going on - 1st prize of $700 to Monty MacIntyre, 2nd prize of $300 to Monty MacIntyre, and 3rd prize of $200 to son Ryan MacIntyre, which also prompted to Ryan a rousing "Happy Birthday" tribute from the crowd. It's the luck of the draw folks.... only in Hawk! Special thanks goes out to all the hard working volunteers that enabled the premiere event once again: Billy Valois and Mark Owen for prize distribution, Lenny Etheridge on bar, Kimberly Wright and Anne Owen on kitchen duty, and all the Hawk Junction Local Services Board members and helpers who work tirelessly from year to year to bring such a fun family event to success.

Over 250 Residents Complete Wawa Recycling Survey
The Municipality of Wawa and Economic Development Corporation of Wawa conducted a “Wawa Recycling Survey” at the beginning of February to determine local interest in expanding future recycling opportunities in Wawa. The survey was very popular and over 250 responses were received. Over 98% of those who completed a survey, indicated they would like expanded opportunities to recycle in Wawa. Over 200 respondents supported that new drop-off locations for recyclables such as paper and plastic be placed at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre or Public Works Garage. Cory Stainthorpe, Director of Infrastructure Services is reviewing the survey results and ways to expand recy-
