Hawk Derby Anglers Face The Elements
Article & photos by Barb Fisher Ticket sales were down a little this year, perhaps with the threat of a chilly day on Hawk Lake, however 153 eager anglers laughed in the face of global warming and dipped their lines in anticipation of landing the big one. Over 35 years now parents, grandparents, friends and kids from Hawk, Wawa and beyond have suited up, picked their spot on Hawk Lake and kicked off spring break week with a fantastic Saturday of fishing, socializing and swapping fish stories. Master of Ceremonies Billy Valois and helper Enos Evan were poised to award the coveted trophies to the successful fishermen. Winners in the kid's division: Logan Dunham 1st with a 4.0 lb pike, Brady Desrochers 2nd with a 2.1 lb whitefish, and Cruz Dupuis 3rd with a 0.8 lb pike. Logan and Brady quickly scooped up the fishing rods that seemed to be screaming their name, but Cruz was pulled in a different direction as he scored the
Pokemon game. Looks like the spring break party will be at the Dupuis home this week. Good luck everyone. Logan shared with me his good luck ritual biting the head off his minnow before letting it loose down the hole; a useful tip seared to memory for the next time I am ice fishing. In the adult race Jesse Johnson came in 1st with a 6.4 lb pike, closely following was Jacqui Ferris with a 6.1lb pike and Mathias Howson with a 4.8 lb pike. Top winners got first pick at the vast array of goodies lining the walls of the hall. Great crowd pleasing prizes were on display: fishing equipment, clothing apparel, kids toys and games, and various gift certificates from area vendors offering a wide variety of goodies, meals, haircuts, live bait, dental service and much more were selected quickly. After the top prizes were awarded, each name of everyone entered in the derby was randomly selected for a chance to pick from the prize table. And is this just me, or an act from a higher force; the first random name drawn
was Logan, the second random name drawn was Brady and the fourth name drawn was Cruz. How spooky is that? Bet it was that Logan, biting the head of the minnow! Nontheless much thanks goes out to everyone who contributed a prize, big or small. The annual raffle draw is a sought after part of the derby whereby only 250 tickets are sold ahead for cash prizes of $700, $300 and $200. This is an integral money generator for the derby conveners as the proceeds enable ongoing expenses to be met in offering family events and the never ending community hall upgrades. The winners this year are: Bonnie West - $700, Anne Owen $300, and Norm Sawchyn $200. Fun community events such as this derby cannot be successful without many hours of preparation, brainstorming and relentless campaigning for donations. Billy Valois and the Hawk Junction Local Services Board must be congratulated for another family fishing day well done. Volunteers are awesome.
International Women's Day Celebration
Article & photo by Barb Fisher "Change is a process, not an event", and we've come a long way baby! International Women's Day, a special tribute to women on the move was established in 1977 by the United Nations; our day to reflect on the progress made in women's equality, to assess the challenges facing women in society, to take steps forward, and to celebrate all that women have done, are doing and can do. The Community Centre was a buzz with women socializing and partying against a backdrop of informational booths on women's issues funded
by the Algoma Council on Domestic Violence and organized by our Chadwic Home personnel and volunteers. Paula Valois of Chadwic Home welcomed everyone to the gathering, Michipicoten First Nation drummers entertained us with a drumming song honouring our women, past, present and future, and beautifully set dinner tables invited us all to sit, relax, maybe exchange a little neighbourhood drama while awaiting our name to be drawn in the array of free draws & give-aways.
