19 Years Of Meals On Wheels In Wawa!
Mayor Rody and Meals Driver Dave Farago Article & photo by Barb Fisher March is Red Cross Month and the Canadian Red Cross is celebrating "March for Meals". As part of March for Meals, "Champion Week" invites local VIP's from the community to take part in the day's delivery of meals raising awareness to the importance of the Meals on Wheels program in our own and neighbouring communities. And this month Wawa's Mayor Ron Rody takes the spotlight in the celebration. I arrived at the hospital canteen meeting area to take a photo of the Mayor and the "Meals" delivery person of the day, Dave Farago. They both were enjoying a great chat, and with their mutual familiarity of many of the meal recipients I'm sure this day's visit brightened up many a senior's memory of days gone by. The Meals on Wheels program has been serving smiles one meal at a time for nineteen years in North Algoma, and has seen lots of changes since the meal preparation was started at the
Viking Restaurant, and ten years ago moving to the Lady Dunn Health Centre with the added benefit of a registered dietician on staff. This program relies on dedicated volunteers of which currently there are 14 people who help seniors remain independent and to stay in their own homes longer. Seniors, adults recovering from illness, physically or mentally challenged individuals all qualify for the Canadian Red Cross Meals on Wheels program. Travelling to the grocery store, preparing a nutritious meal, and cleaning up the dishes and kitchen afterwards can be a daunting exercise for a senior; so why not leave the task to Meals on Wheels! In Wawa, hot meals are prepared at the Lady Dunn Health Centre (LDHC) and follow carefully planned menus that help sustain a well balanced diet, including soup, bread roll, salad and an entree. Of course no meal would be complete without all the condiments and a dessert. The meals are substantial, with
many people enjoying the soup and salad for lunch, saving the entree for dinner. Staff are happy to provide special requests for those people who cannot eat certain foods. Meals are delivered by volunteers at 11:30 a.m. five days a week, Monday to Friday and the Meal program can be ordered anytime by calling the Coordinator: Darlene Trovarello at 705-856-1964. Perhaps you know a neighbour or family member who could benefit from this program. The Red Cross has many ways this service can be provided. For someone recovering from an illness or requires a meal just once or twice a week, this can be arranged. There is a cost for this service, although it is partially subsidized by the NE LHIN. Meals can be billed to a family member who wishes to provide meals for their loved one who may not live in the same town or province. Gift certificates are also available which make great birthday or Christmas gifts for those parents who have everything! With the current number of volunteers, each driver is required to make deliveries only two or three times a month and most deliveries take about 30 minutes. The service works well for volunteers who are also employed. The Red Cross has many volunteers employed as shift workers and others who work for companies or organizations that encourage community service. The demand for volunteers usually grows in the summer when vacations start, and short-term commitments from June to August are certainly welcome. If you feel this pledge can work into your life-style, contact the Canadian Red Cross and join the wonderful team of volunteers - the Heart of the Organization.

Michael Mantha Concerned About Path Ahead For Ontario Health Care
Elliot Lake The Ford Government continues to forge ahead with their roguish changes to Ontario’s health care system despite the outcry from the public and many public health care authorities. For decades, Ontarians have had access to one of the premier public health care systems in the world. Now, after years of underfunding and cuts by successive Liberal and Conservative governments, Ontarians requiring treatment and care can look forward to languishing for months on surgical waiting lists. In emergency rooms they are waiting for hours - only to be moved onto gurneys in hallways in the midst of an ongoing hallway medicine crisis. Local hospitals are feeling the pinch on the font lines. Both Sault Area Hospital and Health Sciences North have been operating above patient capacity on a regular basis for years. They are forced to make cut after cut and yet are expected to maintain and even improve services to patients. Now, it looks like Doug Ford is willing to sacrifice a once great health care system as he schemes in the back rooms to help his wealthy friends by paving the way for private forprofit corporations so they can fill their pockets with public
tax dollars like never before. “Most Ontarians don’t realize that Ontario spends $62 billion a year on health care,” stated MPP Michael Mantha. “Unfortunately there are some people who are interested in health care, not because they want to help people, but because they're interested in a nice juicy slice of the $62 billion pie that comes up every year." On Tuesday night at a town hall on health care, Andrea Horwath shared the NDP’s vision for better health care explaining that Ontario families deserve health care that is second to none. Our health care system should be driven by people, and the care they need and deserve, not by profits and greed. Horwath stated, “We envision a future where our public health care system better protects people’s health, including things like prescription drug coverage and dental coverage. We envision a future where the promise of high-quality health care in Ontario doesn’t end if the care you need includes medication, mental health supports or if the pain is in your mouth. And we envision a future where no one should have to empty their wallet or rack up credit card bills in order to get the care they need.”
