Wawa Hosts NEOHA Peewee Grand Finale
Article by Barb Fisher, photos by Brandi MacLachlan Several months ago the management of our Wawa Peewee Travellers put in motion a bid to host the final North Eastern Ontario Hockey Association Peewee "A" Grand Finale (NEOHA) and was successful in bringing the tournament to Wawa. Manager Trudy Dunham gathered an eager group of parents, volunteers and sponsorship donors to put together an extravaganza to remember. Our Peewee Travellers faced off against the six other teams in the NEOHA: Chapleau Huskies, Hearst Lumber Kings, Iroquois Falls Eskimos, Kapuskasing Icehawks, Porcupine Jr Gold Kings and Timmins North Stars. Wawa Peewee Travellers Sebastian Chevrier, Logan Dunham, Austin Fellinger, Wyatt MacLachlan, Tyler Andre, Madrix Bouchard, Carter Benka, Eben Leadbetter, Matthew Castonguay, Quinn Laing, Hunter Chiasson, Brooke Davidson, Brady Desrochers and Cooper Moore. The action got underway Friday morning to get all 17 games into the weekend schedule. Friday night's opening ceremony got the Finale officially opened with President Peter Moore greeting the teams, offering encouragement, and thanking the generous sponsors. Our very talented Paula Valois sang O Canada, and Mary Haight, a long time supporter of WMHA with team Captain Brooke Davidson dropped the ceremonial puck. And the games continued. Saturday night offered a break in the gruelling pace for the youngsters to relax...just a little, because the Skills Competition
is not to be taken lightly; everyone is out to win. When the ice chips settled: Fastest Forward - Hunter Chaisson 2nd, Fastest Backward - Brooke Davidson 1st, Hardest Shot - Carter Benka 3rd, Accuracy Shooting - Wyatt MacLaghlan 1st, Shoot Out - Eben Leadbetter/ Matthew Castonguay 3rd place team, Shootout on Goalie - Seb Chevrier 4th place. After the serious stuff was done a Fun Relay gave the kids a breather in jumping through hula hoops, pylons and spinning exercising - hilarious fun. The Penny table was always visible for everyone passing to take a chance on winning some great prizes, and fast forwarding to the end of the tournament drum roll please - Cooper Moore was drawn to win the grand prize of an iPad mini. In the Chuck-a-puck contest Miko Castonguay won the 50-50 pot. Wawa Peewees won both their round robin games on Friday: vs Chapleau 7-4 with the MVP going to Cooper Moore, and against Iroquois Falls 6-2 with the MVP going to goalie Sebastian Chevrier. Saturday's action featured our Peewees facing the league champions Kapuskasing ending in a 3-3 tie with Logan Dunham earning the MVP. The final game of the round robin play matched our team with Timmins with Seb Chevrier earning the only shutout MVP of the tournament in a 4-0 win. Not bad for an Atom aged goalie! This amazing effort earned this young goalie his 2nd MVP award. Wawa finished the round robin with 7 points, one point behind S.Porcupine giving them a second place finish going into the Semi Finals on
Sunday. Our Peewees once again faced Kapuskasing and fought a hard battle but took a loss of 3-2. Austin Fellinger earned the MVP on this our final game. The Tournament ended with a 3rd place finish for our Peewees. Even though it was tough to take, defeat is part of the game and every player can be proud of their effort and accomplishments in another Tournament well played in their hockey career. Kapuskasing went on to win the gold medal game against Chapleau with a 7-3 win. Events such as these bring much notoriety and patronizing of town businesses with profits going back to our Minor Hockey Association, and cannot happen with much financial support from the sponsors: White River Air, Wesdome, Hawk Air, Subway,TransCanada Chrysler, Northern Lights Ford, Northern Credit Union, Cameron Lake Recreation Club, Brookfield Power, White River Forest Products, Wawa Family Health Team, John's ValuMart, Michipicoten First Nation, AJ's Pizza, and North of 17. A great round of applause goes to our Peewee coaches and the organizers of the extravaganza: head coach Peter Moore, assistant coach Scott Davidson and manager/trainer Trudy Dunham. Also thanks and congratulations to the parents, family and friends who do an amazing juggling act to enable their kids to experience such a wonderful life lesson and character building experience. And to the sports enthusiasts who packed the arena for three days, Wawa fans - you're the best!
