Our community is always ready to support a good cause and this past weekend doing one of the things we do best, the good old hockey game generated funds to help out the Lady Dunn Health Centre Oncology Unit. Players' names from our OPP detatchment, volunteer firefighters and paramedic services were drawn randomly to form the two teams and although their days of minor hockey are behind them, it goes to show that hockey skills learned early will follow you well throughout your lives.

The guys and gals proved that what hockey parents sacrifice in raising future hockey stars is never wasted.

The spectator seats were well filled and with several fund raisers offered in door

prizes, a donated BBQ with filled propane tank, 50/50 draw and a silver collection admittance fee, approximately $1,700.00 was collected to help out the LDHC Oncology Unit. Again, I was proud to be part of such a giving community spirit. The super BBQ, donated by Wilderness Helicopters with a filled propane tank donated by Davidson Fuels was won by Jacob Gauthier, 50/50 winner in the amount of $128 was Heinz Fellinger and no doubt he is treating his "enthusiastic hockey family" to breakfast as we speak. The lucky winners of the several miscellaneous door prizes were: Ron Rody, Darcy Pilon, Genevieve Verreault, Megan Cavanagh, Melanie Rail and Amanda Gauthier.

Like many businesses and organizations in our community, the Wawa Family Health Team staff pays a Toonie to dress down on Fridays. At the end of the year suggestions are made as to where to donate the money collected throughout the year, keeping in mind, we want to keep it local, or use to help our local citizens.

This year, a suggestion was made to purchase SAH parking tokens to hand out to our cancer patients that have to travel to Sault Ste. Marie for some of their care.

Constant trips to SSM are costly enough, so in a small way to help, the WFHT will offer patients a parking token that will allow them to park for free.

Tokens can be received from the WFHT staff or from Louise Needham, the oncology nurse at the Lady Dunn Health Centre.

Imagining My Future…

I have recently experienced the opportunity to imagine what my future might involve.

Interesting, wouldn’t you say, in that my imagining was done while laid out in my bed. Even today, I’m not sure what malady hit me and flattened me, was it a nasty cold?

Was this the ‘flu’ or some semblance of, or was it simply mother nature putting me down to see what I’m made of. And where, for heaven’s sake, does the one consciousness or God fit in this picture.

Truthfully, I have no clue. All I know for sure is that I tried hard to be grateful for whatever was happening.

Hmmmm, let’s see if I can remember some of the thoughts and imaginings that floated through my befuddled mind in between fierce coughing spells that left me simply grateful to be alive.

Perhaps that was the most important revelation. At one point I was sure I had cracked some ribs, or was it some demon from my past paying me a visit. How I ever managed to make it to my eightieth year without ever experiencing that kind of pain and fragility reminds me, ever again, that I need to take better care of myself. Interesting enough is that I also lost my hearing, so had no choice but to listen to the silence as my body struggling mightily to rid itself of toxins that, despite internal cleansing over the years, were lodged deep within my lungs. I’m moving into my third week.

Maybe so!

Prayers, meditations, pleading for relief, what was it. I remember my wonderful and ever expanding family – I would take each family, one by one and offer grace and thanksgiving for all they have given me. This also included my grand-children and my great-grand-children.

They are all healthy, all with wonderful loved ones in their lives. I discovered I had so very much to be grateful for in this one area of my Life. I dozed off and on during this wonderful meditation.

What AM I grateful for?

What happens when we begin to ask this question on a regular bases, gratitude has been a huge part of my life for many years and I guess it makes sense when I’m unable to do anything else but catalogue gratefulness in my life. And believe me there was no anger or frustration while I focused on my family. AND, guess what, as I focused on gratitude, I forgot for those brief moments why I was semicomatose.

Another area in my life I gave thanks for is our precious planet. Where is our world heading? One blogger says we know that it is heading through the center of our galaxy, something that only takes place every 25,000 years or so. Was it this heightened energy that was impacting on my Life? Did I feel the continual energetic and DNA upgrades, or was it this that totally disoriented and confused me. For me this malady was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Who knows. All I know for sure is that whatever laid me low did a wonderful job for which I am grateful.

So did I imagine a future where there was no sickness, where I could walk freely, where I could be closer to my family, where all my friends and associates live in peace and harmony. Yes, I did! I wish for all people to live in peace and harmony. If we all imagine this future of hope, it will come to be. It’s all good!

Wawa Novice Travellers Win NOHA Title

Congratulations to the players and staff of the Wawa Novice Travellers. The team returned from Powassan, Ontario late Sunday, March 6th as NOHA Novice B Tournament Champions. ​ The Travellers competed against Northern Ontario teams from Cochrane, East Nipissing, Iroquois Falls, Kirkland Lake, Manitoulin, Porcupine, West Ferris and Powassan through-out the weekend. The team went undefeated through the tournament, returning with a 6-0 record.

Great Job Wawa Novice Travellers, you played with heart and made your town, coaching staff and parent so proud of your effort and hard work.

A special thank you to the Powassan Minor Hockey Association, NOHA and all of the tournament volunteers, you provided a great tournament and weekend for all to remember The Travellers next tournament will be held in Hearst, on March 18th – 20th, 2016.

Staff and students at Sir James Dunn enjoyed two days of fun activities before the March Break.

On March 4th, Student Council, Ms. Portis and Miss Russell organized an afternoon of winter events for the entire school. Teams of JK – Gr. 7 students rotated to all the events, while Gr. 8 students ran the events. It was a beautiful day, and everyone had a great time!

During the afternoon of March 11th, Mr. Naccarato and Ms. Portis organized a Staff vs Students basketball game. The boys and girls

basketball teams took on the teachers. It was a close game, but the teachers came out on top (with a little creative reffing from Mrs. Jarvis). Both teams were cheered on by the entire student body, who seemed to enjoy the game as much as the participants.

Mrs. Jarvis had promised a treat for everyone in the school if the teachers won, and she delivered a small bag of candy to each student in the school after the game.

It was a great start to the March Break! SJD’s the place to be!

Hello, Spring – Goodbye Winter For 2016 A poem by Jim White Let's cheer that spring is here, At least the calendar says it is so; March 20th don't you know, So I want to make this perfectly clear, I sure do want this winter to go!

But sooner or later the trees and plants will start to grow; The ice on the lakes will surely melt away at last, To return to their watery way, as in the past; And rivers will start to flow, As the winter snow does go.

Yes, no more blizzards, no more cold, Longer days will finally take hold.

The birds will start to sing as they arrive at last And cheerfully bring that springtime blast, That song of joy that says don't fear: ''I am back to visit you for another year; And that I am here again to stay, Singing to you every single day, 'Til finally the summer is past, And I have raised my family at last.''

But we all know that though the snow must go,

It will be slow, because it must show That it will not go without a fight.

And it will try with all its' might To win the battle, at least for now, To have the inevitable delayed somehow, For even as its' cover does get thin, It knows that spring will finally win, And its' reign will soon be done, But knowing it has had a real good run!

Now don't get me wrong, Sooner or later I will long To see the winter come once more, As it comes knocking on my door.

But I need a lot more time to go by Before I will again be ready to say hi!

So for now it is time to cheer on this new spring, With all the warmth and growth it can bring, And really encourage it to quickly come forth, And see that winter at last retreats back north!

It's that time of year again, the snow is finally melting away

with a rinse in 1 part bleach to 1 part hot water. Let the feeders dry thoroughly before refilling.

This should be done every 2 weeks to a month especially if your feeders are heavily used. It is a good idea to keep a clean set of feeders aside to use when you take others down for cleaning.

Legion News Ruffed Grouse in my Backyard

The St. Patrick's night was a real blast. Even at 5:00 p.m. the lounge was already full and everyone was in the green mood. Our own Keith Killins and his Good-timers band were getting the rest in the Irish spirit. I visited the kitchen and the ladies power team were ready to tackle the many orders for corned beef sandwiches with or without sauerkraut.

Our Ladies Auxiliary will be having their next big event as they are hosting the district team darts on April 2nd and are expecting about 80 participants. So this will be a busy time and may the best team win.

Our lady darters had a good night last Wednesday and every point was earned the hard way. Last Saturdays cribbage was well attended and 1st were John and Reg, 2nd Erin and Joey, 3rd Carol and Joan and boobs were Krista and Willie. The meat draw was

won by Nick Veldt.

This elderly couple was visiting their neighbours who had invited them for dinner.

And every time the old fellow asked his wife something, he started with "Honey," "Darling," or "Sweetheart".

The neighbours were impressed that after 60 years they still used all these expressions.

So after the woman went to the kitchen to do the dishes, the neighbour said to the old man, "It is so nice that after all those years, you still use these lovely names for your wife!"

The old man bowed his head and said, "To be honest, for the last 10 years I have not been able to remember her REAL name!"

To all our Comrades sick at home, in the hospital or nursing homes, you are in our thoughts and prayers and we wish you well.

and suddenly, your feeder area has gone blackish gray with a disgusting mess on the ground.

Disease (like salmonellosis) is normally carried in bird feces and it gets deposited in the debris throughout the winter.

It's imperative to get this mess cleaned up as soon as possible as the snow melts because a.) it's unsightly and b.) bacteria in the debris can make songbirds very sick. The bacteria can be ingested through bird-to-bird contact or contact with infected water or feed.

It is usually pretty easy to tell when a bird is sick with salmonellosis. You will see signs like incredibly ruffled feathers (a bird can look twice its normal size and appear perfectly round), general droopiness, diarrhea, and severe lethargy.

You can often walk right up to a bird with a severe case of salmonellosis and they will not fly away from you. They tend to fluff themselves out, tuck in their heads and go to sleep right out in the open during the day ... something a healthy bird would never do.

To help prevent contamination, rake up debris and scoop it into garbage bags to be sent to the dump. You can also try cleaning the feeder area with a shop vac. Spring is a good time to take down your feeders, give them a good wash in hot, soapy water and then disinfect them

disperse and lessen opportunities for contamination. Fresh seed should always be stored in a cool location and in rodent proof containers like steel garbage cans. Seed regularly has moth larvae in it so it is best to store it outside in a garage or shed.

On to other topics! Many bird species have definitely paired up for the season. I now have 2 Ruffed Grouse visiting my yard morning and evening.

Sometimes one Grouse will curl up on a favourite branch in my pine trees and spend the day resting there. Blue Jays are now in pairs as are Crows and Ravens. Aerial displays can be seen (and heard!) regularly with Crows and Ravens. I saw my first Gull of the season here in Manitouwadge this week, flying over the woods behind my back fence. My husband saw a Bald Eagle last week in Hillsport (an hour into the woods from here) where our camp is located. No sign of other migrants just yet.

I still have huge numbers of Redpolls in my yard daily, anywhere from 100 to 150 as of today, March 17th. It's going to be so incredibly quiet here when they migrate next month! Pine and Evening Grosbeaks have moved off a bit with only a tiny handful of each at the feeders this week. The big (temporary!) melt we just had must have them thinking of other things.

The Gray Jays have disappeared for their nesting season.

I'm expecting sightings of various Sparrows to begin any day now along with arrivals of Dark Eyed Juncos, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins and Blackbirds including Grackles, Starlings and Red Winged Blackbirds.

Robins will be along very soon and it won't be long before the Geese are flying. Watch along sides of highways and such for flocks of Snow Buntings. Spring sightings are imminent!

Child Not Secured In Vehicle – Driver Charged

(BLIND RIVER, ON)On March 18, 2016, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River.

At 12:13 p.m., police observed an eastbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Causley Street. A traffic stop was initiated. As a result of the investigation, it was determined there was a child in the vehicle that wasn’t secured.

Ali, N a s s e r, ALJURAYBAH, 24 years of age, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, was charged and issued two provincial offence notices for: • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act; and • Drive While Child Passenger not Properly Secured, contrary to section 106(4)(b) of the Highway Traffic Act.

Tractor Trailer Driver Charged – Hand-Held Communication Device

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – On March 19, 2016, members from the East Algoma Provincial Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were investigating a fatal Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC) west of Blind River that had occurred earlier that morning. Traffic had slowed near the crash ene on Highway 17.

At 10:06 a.m., police observed a driver of a tractor trailer travelling eastbound on Highway 17, with the driver using his cell phone to take photos of the MVC scene while operating his vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, Evhen ZAPLATSINSKKY, 53 years of age, from Mississauga, Ontario was issued a provincial offence notice and charged with • Drive –Hand-Held Communication Device, contrary to section 78.1(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

Opp Investigate Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

(BLIND RIVER, ON)- On March 19, 2016 at approximately 2:44 a.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator (TTCI) were called to the scene of a

single motor vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 17 between the Town of Blind River and Mississauga First Nation.

A westbound vehicle struck the westbound guard rail, rolled several times before coming to a rest on the Blind River with a female driver being ejected.

The driver Carla AGOSTINI, 58 years of age, from Brampton, Ontario was pronounced dead at the scene.

The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) are assisting with this ongoing investigation and alcohol maybe a factor.

Two Charged After Drug Warrant Executed

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On March 7, 2016 at approximately 8:12 p.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with assistance of the East Algoma Community Drug Action Team (CDAT), the Sudbury Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU), the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and K9 Unit executed a drug warrant at a residence on Spruce Avenue in Elliot Lake.

One male and female were arrested at the scene and charged. The following was seized; cannabis marihuana, cannabis resin (hash oil), clonazepam pills, scales and Canadian currency.

Charged with the following is Craig Randal BURLEY (32) of Elliot Lake.

• Possession of a Schedule ll substance for the purpose of Trafficking – under 3kg as per sec. 5(2) of the Controlled and Substance Act of Canada • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000.00 as per sec.

354(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada Charged with the following is Darlene JAMES (41) of Elliot Lake.

• Possession of a Schedule ll substance for the purpose of Trafficking – under 3kg as per sec. 5(2) of the Controlled and Substance Act of Canada • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000.00 as per sec.

354(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada Both accused are scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on May 3, 2016.

The Devil Made Them Do It

Say what you will about the bouffanted buffoon we've come to know and loathe as The Donald.

He's got chutzpah.

Also known as gall, effrontery, cojones, moxie and unadulterated arrogance.

Chutzpah. A quality personified not only by the orangehaired vulgarian with both feet in his mouth but also by that other man. The one who, having murdered his mother and father, pleads for the mercy of the court on the grounds that he is an orphan.

If you want to see chutzpah in full flower, the courts are a good place to start. Consider the case of Ethan Couch, a Texan punk who, at the age of 18, stole two cases of beer, drank himself into a stupor then went out for a drive, killing four pedestrians.

Did he do time? Nah. Ethan comes from money. His family hired a lawyer who argued that Ethan wasn't a criminal. He suffered, the lawyer argued, from 'affluenza' – a life so insulated by vast wealth and indulgent parents that he literally didn't know right from wrong.

In other words, the money Made Him Do It. Now Dan White, he had a different defence. After he shot George Moscone, mayor of San Francisco, White found a lawyer who claimed White wasn't responsible – it was all those Twinkies he ate. White's addiction to junk food led to 'diminished capacity' causing him to kill. The sugar Made Him Do It. A 35-year-old schoolteacher in Buffalo used a variation of the Twinkie defense when facing a drunk driving rap. Her lawyer argued that while she had blown a blood alcohol level four times the limit, it wasn't her fault. His client suffered from 'gut-fermentation syn-

drome' – basically, her stomach was an unlicensed distillery that converted food into alcohol.

Not her fault, you see. Her stomach Made Her Do It. Sandie Craddock, a London barmaid, also suffered from an internal problem. She stabbed a co-worker to death. Her lawyer claimed she was cranky that day due to pre-menstrual syndrome.

I guess you'd have to call that a Crime of the Month.

And there's John Hinckley, the nutbar who shot Ronald Reagan back in 1981. Hinckley said he did it to impress actress Jodie Foster.

In other words, Hollywood made him do it.

Aside from sharing a stratospheric level of absurdity, these defenses have one other thing in common: they all worked.

Ethan Couch's Affluenza defence earned a wrist slap sentence of ten year's probation; Dan White was acquitted of the murder of mayor Moscone; the Buffalo schoolteacher had her DUI charges dropped and the homicidal London barmaid with PMS, pleaded down from murder to simple manslaughter.

And John Hinckley Junior?

The man who shot Reagan was acquitted of 13 assault, murder and weapons charges. Not guilty by reason of insanity.

What's the lesson to take away here? That no one ever went broke underestimating the credulity of judges (and juries).

Also that it doesn't hurt to keep the phone number of a chutzpah-heavy lawyer in your wallet. As the comedian Stephen Wright said: “I broke a mirror and now face seven years bad luck. But my lawyer thinks he can get it down to five.”

An Easter To Remember Lily Easterlord loved Easter time. She looked forward to it every year. She was a religious woman who took the death and Resurrection of Jesus very seriously. She attended all the services that her faith dictated for Lent, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.

Also as part of the ritual, she diligently searched for just the right Easter cards to send to her relatives and friends. She spent days beforehand writing letters to include with them.

And she loved the flowers that started to appear in the stores – the tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and especially the Easter Lily. It was a symbol of the season, whereas the other flowers reminded her that Spring would be coming soon.

She also spent hours making and painting decorative Easter Eggs for the mantle, and giving the rest away to neighbours and relatives. And no Easter would be complete without the decorations. That included a stained glass of a cross which went in the centre of her front window in the living room. On the front door was a wreath of coloured plastic eggs and a bunny rabbit, with pink ribbon intertwined around it. She had made it herself many years ago, when her first grandchild came along. She was amazed how well it had held up over the years. There were also other reminders of the season displayed tastefully around the house.

She also enjoyed the commercial side of Easter as well – such as buying a new outfit for Easter Sunday, and the straw baskets to put in such things as the chocolate Bunnies, eggs, and the stuffed bunny and chick toys. She had ten grandchildren to buy for, and she always made a basket for each of them. They were her pride and joy, as all grandmothers can proclaim, eh!

Last year she had a very memorable Easter. It started out about three weeks before the important weekend. Her husband, Peter, whom she was married to for fifty-four years, had passed away in late February.

They had always celebrated Easter by gathering as many relatives as possible to their house for Easter Sunday. Lily, Peter and the kids would all go to church in the morning, and then come back for the traditional chocolate Easter Egg hunt for the children. They would be searching the house and the yard, while Lily got brunch prepared. Peter was in charge of the hunt, making sure they found all the eggs, and all the kids got an equal amount of eggs. That kept everyone out of her way in the kitchen.

The afternoon would see everyone begin gathering.

There would be wine and

cheese to nibble and sip on, while waiting for the evening meal. It always was a ham supper. Everyone would then gather around the old upright piano to sing Easter hymns.

Once that was over, it was time for dessert and coffee and/or tea for the adults, while the children would gather around the TV and begin tackling their Easter loot. Finally everyone would begin to leave, usually around nine. Once the guests had left, it was time to put the kids to bed. Then she and Peter would retire to the living room and sit for awhile, chatting about how the day had gone, before cleaning up. Then it would be their bedtime.

After he passed away, she was determined to keep up the Easter Sunday tradition. The now adult children tried to dissuade her, but they knew it was hopeless. They learned from experience that once she got an idea in her head, there was no point trying to stop her. So they all agreed to come. Their children included Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Mary and Joseph. They ranged in ages from early thirties to mid forties. Between them all, they had ten children.

She began planning and shopping in early March, glad for the distraction of mourning for Peter. That would come on Easter Sunday, she knew.

The week leading up to the weekend was especially hectic for Lily. On the Monday after Palm Sunday, she began to develop a tickle in her throat.

She thought to herself – “I can't get sick now. Too much to do. Damn – oops, sorry Lord – those folks behind me coughing and sneezing at church yesterday. If they give me a cold, I will crucify them myself next time I see them.

Oh, my, sorry again! Didn't mean it to come out like that, Lord. Please forgive me. I am just so wound up. I have so much to do this week, and I am so looking forward to this weekend.”

As she feared, by Wednesday, she had a full blown cold. She was forced to go to bed that afternoon. Thursday morning she was really stuffed up, and having a hard time breathing. She put some Vick's Vapor Rub on her nose and chest. That seemed to relieve the congestion for the moment. One of her neighbours, and her best friend, Ruth Gethsamene, dropped in about two that afternoon. She brought an Easter Lily with her.

She put it on the dresser in Lily's bedroom. She normally would never dream of greeting people in there, but that day she just felt so rough that she let her come in. She was glad to have the company, she admitted. Having to look after yourself when you are sick is

not much fun, she also had to admit. This was the first time ever that she was in this situation. Ever since growing up she either had her parents or Peter, to take care of her.

Lily thanked her for the plant, and made a real effort to get up. She did feel a bit better once she was on her feet, and got moving. They made their way downstairs to the kitchen. She made tea, and served banana muffins with honey. That was the first solid food Lily had eaten in a day, and it tasted good, she realized. Then she got Ruth to do some things around the house to get it set up for the Easter Sunday gathering. That was going ahead, even it is the death of me, she joked.

She left about four that afternoon. Lily assured her she was feeling better, and thanked her for her help. She asked her to come over on Sunday, which she agreed to do. Everything was looking good.

She went to bed that Thursday night actually feeling a lot better. But during the night, she became stuffed up again, with the runny nose, and cough. The cold had returned.

By late in the night she had real difficulty breathing. She had used up a whole box of Kleenex too, so she had to get up and went into the bathroom to get another one. Seeing she was up, she decided to go into the living room and sit in her recliner. She figured that would help with her breathing.

On Good Friday morning she didn't feel too bad, but not well enough to go to church.

She reminded herself how she cursed those folks with their colds last Sunday. That really convinced her to stay home – the first time since the birth of her daughter all those years ago.

After lunch she decided to have a little nap. She never was one to sleep in a chair – only in her bed. The cold symptoms soon flared up again, despite puffing and propping up the pillows. Late in the afternoon, she was really gasping for air, and her heart was pounding.

She struggled to reach over to the phone. She called her son Mark to come over right away, as she struggled to get the words out. She tried to get out of bed, but couldn't muster the strength. She collapsed back down onto the bed. She really began to panic, as she gasped for air. Of course, that only worsened the attack. She didn't know which was worse – the inability to breathe, or the feeling she was having a heart attack. She was sweating now, and the bedclothes were drenched.

Fortunately Mark lived only a short distance away. He got to her within ten minutes. He was shocked at her condition, and immediately called 911.

He got a wet washcloth to put on her forehead, and held her hands to comfort her. She tried to talk, but went into a coughing fit. He didn't know what to do about that. He was frightened and felt helpless. Then she clutched his left hand in a vice grip as she cried out, stiff-

ened, and clutched her chest with her right hand, before stiffening. Then she went limp before taking one last gasp, and went unconscious. Mark was paralyzed. He didn't know what to do. Fortunately, the paramedics arrived just then.

They went into action, and assessed the situation quickly.

They confirmed a heart attack, brought on by pneumonia.

They could not find a heart beat. They got her to the hospital as fast as they could.

They administered the paddles to try and revive her on the way, to no avail. At the hospital the doctor confirmed she had had a fatal heart attack.

He offered his apologies as the nurse pushed the gurney towards the morgue.

Mark began to call the family, despite being in shock.

They all met at Lily's house to plan for the funeral. It was a grief-stricken group that started the process.

Saturday was a busy day as they divvied up duties, phone calls, making arrangements, and all the things that funerals required being done.

On Easter Sunday they agreed that she would have wanted them to go to church.

They did that, taking up several pews by the time all the family had got there. It was a difficult service to sit through.

Mark invited everyone to his place for a family meal, and go over what arrangements had already been done, and what was left to do.

Around one, the phone rang. Matthew picked it up, and after a moment screamed out: “What! Are you sure?

How can that be? Yes, we will get over there right away.

Thanks for calling.” When he hung up, of course everyone wanted to know what it was about. He shook his head as he exclaimed, “It's a miracle.

Mom is alive. She is in the Intensive Care Unit. That was the doctor. He explained what happened. He was just filling out the death certificate down in the morgue when the man from the funeral home came in to pick up her body. He thought he saw her chest rising. The doctor went over for a closer look, and sure enough, she was breathing. He checked her pulse, and that too confirmed she was alive. Can you believe it?” Matthew replied, stunned at what he had just learned. “I guess Mom had second thoughts about leaving this world after all. Or else St. Peter wouldn't let her through the Pearly Gates.” He called out to the rest of the family, “Come on, we gotta get to the hospital right away. Let's get going!”

The others were in too much shock to appreciate his attempt at humour. It took them a few minutes to digest what he had told them. It took another few minutes to get organized.

They kept uttering about it being a miracle.

Once they got to the ICU, there was much disbelief, seeing her lying there, with an oxygen mask on her face, and an IV in her arm. She seemed to be sleeping peacefully, and certainly looked alive.

The doctor came in just then, and went to the side of her bed. He told them in more detail what had happened. Then he asked if she had any plants in the house, because there was all kinds of pollen in her nose and throat.

He suspected she had a severe allergic reaction. Just then, Lily opened her eyes, and yanked the oxygen mask off.

She whispered to the doctor: “I heard that. Yes, I have an Easter Lily in my bedroom, and one in the living room. I just love them. The perfume smell from it is so wonderful at this Easter time, isn't it? Why do you ask, doctor?” He told her: “Ah, haw! That explains it. Many people are intolerant to that scent, as well as to other flowers. Daffodils come to mind.” The doctor went on: “I am sure being in that small enclosed bedroom, and even in your living room, the pollen had lots of time to build up before bringing on that intense allergic reaction. It's much like how carbon monoxide can build up in an enclosed garage, or your house, or your car - that sort of thing.”

Then Lily waved her hands to show that she had something to say. “Never mind about that. Let's rejoice in my death and resurrection, just like Our Saviour did – a real reason to celebrate Easter this year, I would say. What I saw and felt....But enough already!

I'm back. Now c'mon doctor, when can I get out of here? I have a family get together this afternoon. I don't know what we will eat. Now let me see, oh yes, I have the ham already.

There is frozen vegetables in the freezer. It's not quite what I wanted to do, but for this time, it will have to do. The biggest job will be the scalloped potatoes. Maybe for just this once I can get one of you kids to help me out with that. I was going to bake a chocolate cake, but now I guess we will have to settle for ice cream and cookies.” She paused as she went over these arrangements in her mind. Then she declared: “ And I still have a lot of living yet to do as well, so let's get started. Get me out of here!”

Everyone laughed, and shook their heads. Luke commented, “We'll never be able to live with her now!” That brought a round of laughter, and broke the feeling of disbelief in that hospital room. And so that turned out to be one memorable Easter for Lily and the entire Easterlord family...

I want to wish everyone a Happy Easter. Oh, and welcome to Spring, which officially arrived on March 20th this year. As the old saying that our family went by was: 'Early Easter, an Early Spring. I hope the adage holds true this year. “Jim”

Easter, A Peculiar Holiday Easter arrives this weekend following the long lead-up of Lent. I think there’s something you’re supposed to do, or give up, or something. I never did figure it all out.

It all seems to culminate with Good Friday, another day I never understood. They tell me that’s the day Jesus was hung on a cross like a load of laundry and he died there. Doesn’t seem like all that “good” a Friday to me.

And finally we get Easter on Sunday. Now that’s a holiday I can get my teeth into,

so to speak. Chocolate was always the key word to me at Easter. Chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies, chocolate chickens. I always wondered who was responsible for the eggs, the bunnies or the chickens. The bunnies seemed the most unlikely. But who was I to argue with tradition? I’ll eat either one.

When I was a kid the Easter bunny usually carried a basket with eggs in it. But the television commercials of today seem to indicate that bunnies are producing the eggs

themselves. Even cows and other creatures are getting into the act according to some commercials. I’m not sure I believe all that.

Oddly enough, as a small kid, I didn’t really care all that much about candy and sweets. I had a bad recall of one gluttonous Hallowe’en when I got good and sick from stuffing candy in my mouth all evening. The memory stuck for awhile and I rarely ate candy for quite some time afterwards.

It was not the idea of eating candy that made me eager for the arrival of the Easter bunny. It was the idea of getting those lovely chocolate effigies of bunnies, eggs or chickens. Then there were those garishly coloured candy eggs, coated with hard candy, filled, if you could bite through

When awake, I’m even beginning to eye the cats warily. Maybe they’ll try to kill me with chocolate. The perfect cat murder.

However, the whole idea of Easter mystifies me a little these days. Especially the holiday part. First we get a day off for Good Friday, a day historically that was not good.

Then, Sunday is Easter which is already a day off. Then Monday is taken as a holiday by the government and financial community for the most part. They feel that they should get the day off because Easter Sunday was not a proper holiday since it was already a day off.

Are we confused yet?

I hope that the Easter bunny doesn’t bring me too much chocolate…But don’t forget me!

that outer crust, with some unidentifiable white sludge that was both tasteless and unnamable.

I didn’t east most of this stuff but those hard candy eggs were durable and made good playthings. Not so the chocolate bunnies.

They tended to sag and lose their shape from the heat of my hands. They were for looking at.

Anyway, I never was big on eating candy. Not until much later when I was diagnosed diabetic. Then, for no discernable reason I craved chocolate (chocoholic, no doubt) and can’t seem to make myself stay away from it. I’ve begun to dream lately of a malevolent big chocolate bunny cackling in an evil way as he unloads tons of chocolate at my bedside in the night.

The successful bidder will be required to provide a 100% Performance Bond and a 50% Labour and Material Payment Bond upon execution of the contract.
