Wawa Minor Hockey Atoms Bring Home Gold!
16 Years Of Meals On Wheels In Wawa! Article & photo by Barb Fisher March is Red Cross Month and the Canadian Red Cross is celebrating "March for Meals". As part of March for Meals, "Champion Week" invites local VIPs from the community to take part in the day's delivery of meals to raise awareness to the importance of the Meals on Wheels program in our own and neighbouring communities, and this month Wawa's Mayor Ron Rody takes the spotlight in this celebration. On March 24th, it was my scheduled day to deliver meals and teaming up with Ron gave me a "close-up and personal" visit with our Mayor. I must say that I was seriously upstaged in my chats with the seniors on the list as Ron knew them all personally. All the seniors seem to look forward to the friendly daily visits and with the Mayor standing in their kitchen, well catching up on town news may have made the remaining meals in need of a microwave reheat! The Meals on Wheels program has been serving smiles one meal at a time for sixteen years in North Algoma. This program relies on dedicated volunteers of which currently there
are fourteen people who help seniors remain independent and to stay in their own homes longer. Seniors, adults recovering from illness, physically or mentally challenged individuals all qualify for the Canadian Red Cross Meals on Wheels program. Travelling to the grocery store, preparing a nutritious meal, and cleaning up the dishes and kitchen afterwards can be a daunting exercise for a senior; so why not leave the task to Meals on Wheels? In Wawa, hot meals are prepared at the Lady Dunn Health Centre (LDHC) and follow carefully planned menus that help sustain a well balanced diet. Meals include soup, bread roll, salad and an entree containing the three basic food group requirements: protein, starch and vegetables. Of course no meal would be complete without all the condiments and a dessert. The meals are substantial, with many people enjoying the soup and salad for lunch, saving the entree for dinner. One of the LDHC meal preparers Debbie Case pictured in the photo, explained that the staff are happy to provide special requests for those people who

cannot eat certain foods. Meals are delivered by volunteers at 11:30 am five days a week, Monday to Friday. Meals can be ordered anytime by calling the Coordinator, Darlene Trovarello at 705-856-1964. Perhaps you know a neighbour or family member who could benefit from this facility. The Red Cross has many ways this service can be provided. For someone recovering from an illness or requires a meal just once or twice a week, this can be arranged. There is a cost for this service, although it is partially subsidized by the NE LHIN. Meals can be billed to a family member who wishes to provide meals for their loved one who may not live in the same town or province. Gift certificates are also available which make great birthday or Christmas gifts for those parents who have everything! With our current number of volunteers, each driver is required to make deliveries only two or three times a month and most deliveries take about 30 minutes. The service works well for volunteers who are also employed. The Red Cross has many working volunteers, some being shift workers and others who work for companies or organizations that encourage community service. The demand for volunteers usually grows in the summer when vacations start, and short-term commitments from June to August are certainly welcome. If you feel this pledge can work into your lifestyle, contact the Canadian Red Cross and join the wonderful team of volunteers - the heart of our organization!
Article by Barb Fisher. Photo supplied. On March 11-13 our Wawa Minor Hockey Atom players travelled to Iroquois Falls to compete in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association's "Tournament of Champions B Division" and brought home GOLD! This tournament is viewed as the League's "Stanley Cup" of their season. Teams throughout Northern Ontario are categorized according to the population of their communities. Wawa is registered as a "C" division, however if the team is deemed too strong for this division, they can apply to the NOHA to be moved up, and that is exactly what the Atom team decided to do in this 2015-16 season. Our Atoms not only played at the higher level "B" division, but dominated! Our Atom Travellers won all three games in the round robin vs Manitoulin Panthers, Kirkland Lake Blue Devils and the East Nipissing Vipers. In the Semi-Finals, our team met Manitoulin Panthers and although the battle was tight throughout the first and second periods, our team's con-

ditioning shined through and finished with a strong win of 7-1. In the Gold Medal game, our Atoms faced the host town of Iroquois Falls. The opposing team was strong and had home ice advantage, but with our superb goaltending, the Wawa fans drowned out the local cheers. Again the first two periods were a tight match, but our well-conditioned players came up victorious once again to claim gold in a 6-1 WIN. Most of these players are back-to-back winners of this yearend TOC's as both the Novice and Atom WMHA teams of the 2014-15 season also won their NOHA "Tournament of Champions". A successful season like this does not happen without the support and dedication of a fantastic group of mentors. The Atom team would like to thank Head Coach - Kevin Fellinger, Assistant Coaches Ray Chevrier, Chris Morrison and Jeff Austin, Trainers Trudy Dunham and Sabrina Michalcewicz along with parents, fans, referees and community supporters who continue to make hockey possible in our small town.
