28th Annual Wawa Ice Fishing Derby
1st Prize on Manitouwik: Terry Shewfelt with a 16.3lb Pike
2nd & 3rd Prize winners on Manitouwik: Clyde Smith & Robert Moss Article by Barb Fisher, Photos by Kari Smith Friday night kicked off another great response to this our 28th annual Ice Fishing Derby offering over $140,000 in cash and prizes, and the Community Centre was elbow room only. With 1,334 tickets sold it looked like every participant from our entire region and beyond was gathered to see if they were one of the lucky winners of this night's random Sponsor Donated Prizes drawn from registrants in the
derby. It was a bonus prize give-away extravaganza with an impressive range in higher priced items of chainsaws, ice auger, generator, fishing aids, paraphanalia and gismels, to smaller prizes but with still a thrill to hear your name drawn. Saturday morning I admit to missing the furor of machines headed out to their favourite fishing hole as my article perculated in my dreams, but I was ready to kick into action Saturday night when, according to the leader board, I missed much action out on the ice. At the prescribed time, everyone pulled their lines and headed out to the eateries in town to spend their meal voucher and prepare for the next prize drawing event of the weekend. Back at the arena the momentum gathered initiating much chatter and bragging rights while inspecting the wonderful array of top prizes to be awarded to the successful anglers. But wait, there was much more cash to be given out: 5 prizes of $1,000 cash in the Early Bird prizes, and confirming the reputation of a first class event, winners were among the many out-of-towners participating. The lucky winners were: Jason Prevost from SSM, Eric Rancourt from Val Caron, Cindy Leclair from Timmins, David Courchene from Heron Bay, and Eric Leonard from Wawa. The Returned Flag draw awarding a free registration for next year was won by Nick Kovac from Goulais, and a new addition to the prizes offered, the Tim Hortons Coffee for a Year went to Shane Wardrop. Perhaps the most coveted prize, the registration award of $30,000 ticket was drawn
1st Prize on Hawk Lake: Debra Desrochers with a 8.02lb Pike
2nd & 3rd Prize winners on Hawk Lake: Melissa Pepper & Josh Murphy from the drum by our Rotary Club exchange student from Germany, Eric Schulz; another experience he can boast about in his Canadian memoirs. And the lucky winner, drum roll please - Gino Buonomo from the Soo. The Country & Western Brad James Band from Hamilton sponsored by Tim Hortons topped off the evening for those who didn't have to rest up for the last fishing op on Sunday. Sunday held the wrap-up celebration with the "big fish" winning prizes awarded. This
year followed last year's prize distribution with six identical prizes offered for the six heaviest fish, any species, being caught on each of the three derby lakes: Wawa, Hawk and Manitowik Lakes. Winners selected their prize preference from the prize pool with first place winner selecting first, etc. Prize pool to choose from: 450 Sportsman Polaris ATV by Jones Power Sports, Tundra Sport 550F Ski-Doo by North Shore Sports & Auto - SSM, 14 ft MirroCraft Boat w/15 hp Motor & Trailer by Buck's Marina, Stihl RB200 Power Washer by Wawa Rent-All, Otter XT Fishing Lodge by Chippewa Trading Post - SSM, and 8" 33CC Stingray Power Ice Auger by Home Building Centre.
