Chris Simon Shares His Colorado Experience

25th Annual Wawa Ice Fishing Derby Article & photos by Ashley Omolida   One of the biggest events in Wawa has come and gone and still proves to be huge. For 25 years, the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby had another very successful year with participants from all over. Registration started on Friday, March 4th from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Walking into the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre, it was packed. We made our way to our line to register and being able to pick out a Wawa Ice Fishing Derby t-shirt for being a participant. We then made our way to the Fireman’s Draw tickets table that was set up. The AJ’s Pizza girls Nicole Ralph and Carole Moisan were set up beside them selling slices of pizza to those waiting and wanting a delicious snack. We walked over to check out the shiny, new prizes. Seeing some old faces and catching up. The smiles, laughter and eagerness from everyone in there was radiating. One of the best things to experience about Derby weekend.   The frozen lake turns into a little town of its own on that beautiful Saturday morning with families, buddies and the single fishermen who set out to their huts for a chance to win a pretty great prize. This year, I decided to not go out fishing but to stay off the ice with my daughter. We first set out to the Michipicoten

Article by Joan Brooks. Photos supplied.  “Things are going really well,” said Wawa’s own Chris Simon who is enjoying the wonderful recognition of all the great times and memories that came from playing with hockey greats in the NHL and KHL for several years.   Chris recently returned from playing in the Stadium Series Alumni Game on February 26th between the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings at Coors Field – in the baseball field - in Denver, Colorado. “Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings had a rivalry when I played with them,” shared Chris. “It continued on for many years when both teams had a real hatred for each other. After 20 years of having this ongoing battle they decided to bring back the guys who were the original founders of this battle, all the players who were a part of the 1996 Stanley Cup. We played against the Detroit Alumni also. At the end we saluted the fans together and then we took a team picture with both teams together – burying the hatchet. It was a great event! To play in front of over 40,000 people. I never had that experience before. I’ve never played in an outdoor game during my career then the following day they had current players play in the afternoon. We got to watch that too.”   “I don’t know who was happier her or I,” shared Chris who took along his oldest daughter Sierra. "It was a great experience but the best part was being able to share it with one of my children, especially one of my daughters. To experience that feeling with how you feel when you are a player in the NHL. It was a unique experience – they pretty much rolled out the red carpet for you wherever you go. It’s not the real world we live in today, but I think, at her age, to be able to experience that and for me with her was the best part of it all. To experience the

excitement of getting ready for the game, having a meal with all the team. It was fun! We won that championship 20 years ago”.   Chris also met up with old friends in Colorado. “It was a special group. This year we got another Colorado jersey with #12 and Simon on it, to see the amount of people for the game was a bit overwhelming. When I was out there skating around and just being back. You know it’s going to be on TV. Adam Foote was there, Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Mike Keane, one of my line mates Curtis Leschynshyn, Raymond Bourque was there, Patrick Roy was our goalie, Just to look at the Detroit roster when I saw the guys – Steve Yzerman was there, Brendan Shanahan, Dino Ciccarelli. There were 18 plus Hall of Famers that were playing in that game. It was special for me to be a part of that, to be invited into the type of environment where it was going to be broadcast all around North America. There were media from Russia, Nicolas Lidstrom came over from Sweden to play Valerie Kamesky came from Moscow. There were guys from all over the world that came just to play in this game.   The game was organized by Colorado. Joe Sakic was one who

made all the phone calls. The way Joe was respected throughout his career, how great of a person he is, he was a true leader. I try to share with the kids that the greatest player in the game are leaders and leaders help others become leaders. When Joe asked me to go, there was absolutely no hesitation. I wanted to be a part of that and we got to see a lot of the staff from Colorado when I was playing there and they are still there. A lot of them came over to say Hello.”   This is Chris’ year as he is being inducted in the Little NHL Hall of Fame in Mississauga, Ontario on March 12th, 2016. “The Little NHL is an all native hockey tournament that I played in in the 80’s. I was one of the players who moved on to the National Hockey League. I was 14.”   Chris Simon is also being inducted in the 2015 Sault Ste Marie Hockey Hall of Fame. He along with Denny Lambert and Marty Turco have contributed enormously to the sport of hockey in Sault Ste. Marie. “Denny and I will both go in next year. It will be during a Greyhound game.”   So Chris Simon, you do Wawa proud. Enjoy your year!   What is Chris Doing Now?   Chris remains involved in coaching the Wawa Mustangs Girl’s Hockey team. He is also developing a Hockey Program that works for all youth. “What I would like to do is work with all youth, but where I would like to go is in Northern Ontario where there is no other NHL guys that do that. My thing is trying to make things available for all kids, not just kids that live in the bigger cities or whose parents can afford to send them everywhere. I’d like to bring hockey to isolated communities.” Not only would Chris provide hockey knowledge and know how, but develop presentations that teach youth about nutrition, bullying, self-confidence, all things that are a part of life. “Those are the things I share with kids. We’re building a website, we have some marketing strategies that we are working on.” Stay tuned!
