Northern Lights Ford Holds Drive 4Ur School Event Article & photo by Barb Fisher Michipicoten High School and Northern Lights Ford teamed up to offer test drives to the public in a fundraising blitz. This is the third year a 4UR Event has been held and this year, Northern Lights Ford joined with Michipicoten High School with funds raised to be used in the revitalization of the school's courtyard. For every test drive during the event, Ford of Canada is donating $20 to MHS up to a max-

imum of $6,000. This year Ford has added a great bonus to their generosity - an additional $20 for each test drive to help out Fort McMurray and neighbouring communities in regaining their lives after the devastation of the ongoing wildfires.

I arrived early to chat with everyone as the morning got underway and Ford Volunteer Extraordinaire Lonna Rilley asked me the preliminary survey questions before we set out on my pick, the Ford Escape. When asked if the

purchase of a Ford product might be in my future, I replied that with grandsons soon to be borrowing gramma's car. I may be needing a new one soon!

I cornered Northern Lights Ford Owner/Manager Andrew McKenzie for a short summary of the best quality in each vehicle on standby and I could see that it was difficult for him to choose one phrase in recap. The Fusion and Focus are sought after for their safety features and fuel economy, the Taurus has

tons of room, the Escape is their top selling SUV and the F-150 trucks, besides being Canada's best-selling truck for fifty years in a row, is the only truck on the market totally fabricated from aluminum resulting in better fuel efficiency.

Hot dogs, burgers and refreshments were available at lunch while we circulated around the many other attention grabbers featured: draws for the chance to win a great looking bench fabricated from the slab of a tree, treated and embossed with "Ford" handcrafted by Mr. Beland the MHS woodworking teacher, several outdoor recreational items donated by Canadian Tire and a framed print, "Spirit Island" by artist D.J. Pfaff donated by Joanie Clement. At the beginning of each school year, students are asked for their top ten picks for a project they would like to work on throughout the year, and for this year revitalizing the school's courtyard was the preferred choice. Student and artist Zoe Lazarhoff came up with three graphic designs offering some potential options, and everyone in attendance were invited to choose their preference.

The event was a resounding success with some 200 tests drives taken, netting approximately $4,000 for the MHS courtyard revitalization project, and a further $4,000 donated to the Fort McMurray disaster relief.

Once again our community has banded together to support a good cause. Bravo Wawa!

in the first place. If I had ever had the temerity to be carrying such a thing around I would have been hugging it against my chest the entire time I was out.

Debra and I sat debating the story for some time after we laughed a bit at the incongruity of the event. We both had entirely different ideas about what we would do if we made a find such as that bus driver did.

Debra said she would do exactly as the bus driver did and turn in the bonanza in hopes of finding the owner who might very well need it a lot more than we do. She’s a true believer in justice and fair play. To her, it wouldn’t be fair to just keep the money.

She wouldn’t abdicate all rights to the find, but would make

To Take The Money Or Not

My wife and I took note recently of a news item that spoke of a bus driver who discovered a pack sack on a seat in his empty bus as he did a check over at the end of his line. He picked the bag up intending to make an effort to find the owner.

When he opened the pack, hoping to find some I.D. or other indication of ownership, he discovered the bag was full of cash. A lot of cash, it turned out. A quick count showed there to be some fifty thousand

dollars inside.

The driver was lauded by his employers for turning in the pack to try to find the owner of the surprise package of a lifetime. We heard later that the money was an inheritance left on the bus by mistake.

All of this begs the question, what sort of person would be hauling around fifty grand in a pack sack and how could they forget to pick the damned thing up as they left, never mind setting such a thing down on a public conveyance

every effort to locate the loser of such a small fortune. Debra argued that she would definitely claim the prize if no such rightful owner turned up within the allotted time. However, her strong moral conscience would not allow her to keep it without making the effort.

On the other hand, I’m not quite as sure of my own morality in the same situation. If I found a twenty dollar bill in the gutter, or pretty well anywhere, I would slip it in my pocket without another thought provided I had not seen it drop from someone’s pocket immediately before I spotted it. Neither would I wave it in the air and shout, “Hey, who lost this?” I’d be likely to be trampled by the mob of claimants.

right to me, to reward the idiot who would carry around large sums of cash and then, absentmindedly, walk off and leave it behind. I’m not saying I would do so, but I would certainly consider saying nothing and simply walking away with my find. Maybe tuck it away in my closet (hide it) until I see if anything happens.

Of course it would then become a problem spending that kind of money without someone noticing.

On second thought, perhaps I’ll remain morally correct and do the same thing the bus driver did. I just don’t seem to have the guts to practice any reasonable amount of larceny.

I guess I’ll just have to stay honest.

It seems that one of the hazards in welcoming spring is the recurring floods in some parts of our country. Mayor Rody announced the arrival of evacuees from Kashechewan First Nation welcomed to Wawa last week and to provide them with a safe and secure temporary home until the threat of flooding subsides. Mayor Rody thanked members of the Red Cross, WAVS and other volunteers who sprang to action to make the evacuees feel comfortable in their home away from home.

Mayor Rody gave much praise to Karin Grundt, her volunteers, school kids, township workers and concerned residents for their help in returning our town to the debrisfree condition we all aspire to.

Thanks goes to all who continually battle this problem.

Colin Lachance and David Flood, representing Northeast Superior Regional Chiefs' Forum (NSRCF) presented a synopsis of their principles for the advancement of the Enhanced Sustainable Forest Licence (eSFL) and the transition process. This process is the result of a collaborative effort from represenatives of several individual First Nations, members of the Forest Industrial Working Group, Community Working Groups and the Ministry of Natural Resources.

With respect to Aboriginal communities, their focus is to seek meaningful economic and management opportunities within the forestry sector, understanding that other matters such as government-togovernment relationship building, improved environmental stewardship and resource benefits/revenue sharing, will need to be addressed through sepa-

rate means that are currently under consideration. With the focus in the Wawa area encompassing the Magpie and Martel Forests, with special status for the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, they extended an invitation for our and area communities to get involved in the process. The speakers acknowledged that the road ahead will be complicated and at times frustrating, but this is a global movement moving toward community forestry and return of the feminine spirit with greater environmental and social responsibility.

The Municipal Building Departments of Ontario have been involved in extensive training upgrades to meet the new regulatory requirements of the Ontario Building Code Act. Council deemed it appropriate to recognize the dedication and commitment of its Building Department Staff and proclaimed May 2016 as International Building Safety Month in recognition of the professionalism of its Building Officials and their dedication to Public Safety.

The list of accounts for the month of April in the total amount of $1,133,143.70 was approved for payment.

The Province of Ontario, through the Ministry of Natural Resources has leased land at Roll #5776-000-00718600.0000 for the purpose of a Residential Trailer Park. Unlike most Crown Land leases, the Province requires the leasee to pay all municipal taxes directly to the municipality rather than administering as a Payment in Lieu property. Significant arrears have now accumulated on this property which include penalty, interest and registration fees. The Municipality

of Wawa has no method of collecting these taxes as the tax sale process under the Municipal Act excludes Crown Land. The Municipality has discussed this matter extensively with the Province of Ontario for the past 10 years.

The Province of Ontario has paid the outstanding taxes but refuses to pay penalties, interest and registration fees. The only available method in removing the outstanding amounts from the records of the Municipality of Wawa is to write-down all remaining amounts owing, $193,815.27. The write-down will be at great expense to the Municipality of Wawa and its ratepayers representing almost 4% of the annual municipal taxation levy. Council approved the write-down of all outstanding amounts connected to this land in the amount of $193,815.27, with the schoolboards being charged their proportionate share and the write-down funded from the Reserve for Bad Debt and General Reserves if necessary.

Council authorized the owner of John's Valu-Mart to install a portable greenhouse/ garden centre on its parking lot where bedding plants, soils and fertilizers would be sold from May 9 through July 16 upon which time the greenhouse will be removed, conditional that the applicant obtain a building permit.

The Michipicoten Golf Club was constructed in the 1960's by local businesses and citizens, and officially opened in 1967 under direction of a board of volunteers, now an Incorporated entity. The Golf Course is considered the most utilized recreational facility in the municipality and has a positive social and economic impact on our community.

The Merry Month Of Farch

- From Richard lll by William Shakespeare Hah! Tell us about it, Bill. You're talking to Canadians here! We could teach you an iambic pentametre or two about winter and discontent.

For starters, allow me to blindside you with a snowball from the mittened paw of a Canadian writer: “Mon pays, ce n'est pas un pays, c'est l'hiver”. That's a quote from Gilles Vigneault. He's Quebecois, but I like to think that he speaks for the entire Great White North, and in English what he's saying is: “My country is not a country, it's winter.”

That's a sentiment all Canadians can relate to, marooned as we are in a snowdrift somewhere between Christmas and Easter. Winter seldom makes itself more obnoxious than at this particular calendar juncture we find ourselves traversing as I type.

Personal disclaimer: I now live in what passes for the tropics of Canada: the Gulf Islands of B.C. But I earned my stripes and shovelled my share growing up in snowbound places like Thunder Bay, Fergus and Nashville (Ontario).

Besides, what the rest of the country gets in white fluffy, we in the islands get in liquid form. You don't have to have webs between your toes to live here, but it wouldn't hurt.

Wherever we winter in Canada, we all know that we are in the home stretch. We are well past the longest night of the year, rounding

the Horn of the winter of 2015/16.

We have several plodding months behind us and at least a few more weeks of potential meteorological treachery before we can safely break out the Hawaiian Tropic sunblock. We know from past experience that winter will bushwhack us at least once – possibly several times – more. We also know that spring is definitely, tantalizingly -- like a stripper down to her last ostrich feather – just around the corner.

And how do we designate this last desperate slog towards spring?

Well, we could call it the month of Farch.

Not an original idea. I copped it from a Toronto author by the name of Bill Sherk. When I hosted a radio show back in the Paleolithic Era, Mister Sherk approached me asking for air time to publicize his radical restructuring of the calendar. What he proposed was to amalgamate the miserable months of February and March into a megamonth – Farch.

I liked the idea. It compacted what is traditionally the worst stretch of weather in the year into one pug-ugly calendar month. Plus it adds a socially acceptable expletive to the litany of f-words we already associate with this time of year.

Then I considered the downside.

The new month of Farch would be 59 days long (60 in leap years).

Could we handle that?

Nah. Forget Farch. I prefer to keep my months bite-size.

And anyway you slice it, Mapril's just around the corner.

Assault Occurs During Break And Enter

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – The Blind River Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges as a result of a break and enter that occurred at a residence on Indiana Avenue in Blind River.

On Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at approximately 7:40 a.m., Blind River OPP were contacted regarding a break and enter and assault that had occurred. While in the residence the suspect assaulted a resident of the home and pushed over a fish tank on the second floor of the residence resulting in damage to the ceiling of the first floor.

The victim sustained minor injuries.

As a result of the investigation, Joshua Lucas CLARKE, 21 years of age, from Blind River, ON, was arrested and charged with: • Assault Causing Bodily Harm, contrary to section 267(b) of the Criminal Code; • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code; • Mischief over $5000, contrary to section 430(3) of the Criminal Code; and • Break and Enter – commit indictable offence, contrary to section 348(1) (b) of the Criminal Code The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River, on July 7, 2016.

North Bay Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

(TILDEN LAKE, ON) – On May 1, 2016 at 9:30 p.m. members of the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 in Notman Township.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the North Bay Fire Department attended the scene. Investigation revealed that a moose was standing on the crest of a hill in the northbound lane when a northbound vehicle struck the moose.

The driver and only person in the vehicle, Leonard LEAR 63 years of age from Englehart was pronounced dead at the scene The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) attended the scene and is assisting with this ongoing investigation.

Suspended Driver Charged

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – On April 28, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

At 4:53 p.m. police observed a westbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Causley Street. A traffic stop was initiated. As a result of the investigation, the driver was found to be suspended.

Christopher William LARSON, 27 years of age, from Campbell River, British Columbia, was charged with: Use Licence of Other Jurisdiction While Your Ontario Driver’s Licence is Suspended, contrary to section .

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on June 22, 2016.

Opp Charge Impaired Driver

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – On April 30, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol in the Town of Blind River.

At 2:32 a.m. police observed a vehicle pull out of a laneway onto Causley Street and continue westbound. A traffic stop was initiated. The officer determined the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverage and the driver was arrested.

Chad David ROLLING, 27 years of age, from the Municipality of Huron Shores, Ontario, was charged with: • Driving While Ability Impaired- Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 253(1) (a) of the Criminal Code; and • Driving with More than 80 milligrams of Alcohol in Blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on June 9, 2016.

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – On April 30, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol in the Town of Blind River.

At approximately 4:00 p.m. police observed a westbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Causley Street. A traffic stop was initiated. As a result of the investigation, it was determined that there was Cannabis Marihuana, Cannabis Marihuana resin in the vehicle and the driver was found to be suspended.

Legion News I hope that all the mothers had a good Mothers Day and were spoiled just a little.

Last week, we once again celebrated the Liberation of the Netherlands and raised the Dutch flag at the Legion as a show of a 71 year friendship. The St. Joseph's Island Branch did the same. All over Holland there were silent Remembrance ceremonies and then jubilation and happy parties.

This Thursday is our General Meeting for May and we hope to see many members attend. And then we will get ready for the Legion Golf Tournament.

Our lady darters will have their Awards Night and potluck to end this season. I hope to publish some of the winners.

Last Saturdays winners at cribbage were; 1st Carol and Joan, 2nd Iris and Cliff, 3rd Donna and Shirley and boobs were Alma and Sandra. The 50/50 draw was won by Lucie.

On a very foggy evening, it was hard to see on the road.

So one driver followed the car in front of him very carefully.

Only once in a while he saw the taillights of this car. So all of a sudden the car in front hit the brakes and the guy following made an emergency brake stop.

He jumped out of his car and yelled at the man, "What is the matter with you, I

almost hit your car!"

So the fellow calm replied, "It is hard to see maybe but you are in my GARAGE!" To all our Comrades sick at home, in the hospital or nursing homes, you are in our thoughts and prayers and we wish you well.

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – On May 1, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

At 11:15 a.m., police observed an eastbound vehicle with no licence plates. A traffic stop was initiated on Causley Street. Police determined the vehicle had a valid temporary permit. Also, as a result of the investigation, the vehicle was not equipped with an Interlock Ignition Device as per the driver’s conditions.

Eugene MONAGUE, 55 years of age from Christian Island, Ontario is charged with: Drive Motor Vehicle Not Equipped with Interlock Ignition Device, contrary section 41.2(1)(b) of the Highway Traffic Act. Realizing A Shift In Consciousness II In our beautiful country of Canada, Mother Nature is unleashing her wrath, OR, is she doing what is necessary for her to continue feeding her soil. Fire is a necessary element. Right after the sun, fire is the oldest form of energy used by man. Fire can be extremely dangerous and destructive. But it is beneficial in so many ways if used properly.

With a city and its residents who have experienced ‘hell on earth’ last week and with many still in the ‘throws of Armageddon” there are those who point to climate change as the catalyst. It surely could be. But then, what about all the fires that blazed and burned buildings and property, and forests, over the past millennia and way beyond? What was the catalyst then? Was it climate change? I guess this could be discussed ad finite until we all arrive at a place in our lives where a huge shift in consciousness of the human race becomes the norm. I call it love. Love is really all there is. When will that be?

One of my favorite bloggers, Ted Murray, last week posted his ‘message from the heart’ by questioning, “What is the world in the most desperate need of at this point in history? Is leadership most important? Is peace and prosperity for everyone the key?

Is recognition of our being part of the galactic community essential to the longterm survival and thriving of our species? Will alternative energy sources be the key to cleaning up our planet and its economic health? Will technological breakthroughs be what will enable us to thrive in the future?”

All of these things sound wonderful and will make a profound difference. However, should these be the focus of our efforts, or are these the consequence of a more deeprooted issue? For this grateful human, tears rolled down my cheeks more times this past week than perhaps would be considered normal (whatever normal is). Mother Nature was performing admirably. And there is no one human who could block her path. Wind and sun and heat and very little

rain all helped fire – aka the Beast, carry on her way. We can all blame global warming, for sure, but perhaps first we need to look within ourselves to see and understand what we are doing to contribute to this holocaust – but for the grace of God there go I. Murray goes on to say, “What is needed before any of these things can be fully realized is a shift in the consciousness of the human race. Only when we begin to recognize the oneness that we share with all of creation and embrace our common spirit can things shift quickly. When we realize that love is what everyone is seeking and that love is the creative spark of the universe, then peace will be possible. It starts with you and your own consciousness.” It starts with me and my consciousness. Do I love myself so fully that I am able to share it widely with others? Am I focused on raising my vibration so high that I raise the entire planet’s frequency? What I do know for sure is that love really is the answer we are all seeking. We just have to surrender to what is and embrace love fully with others.

For anyone watching media, you also witnessed an outpouring of love in our country that is incredible. I am so proud to be a Canadian. People stepped up to do whatever they could to lessen the pain and chaos of those affected. Yes, the generous financial donations through the Red Cross ($56M at last count) helped. But, the gazillion other large and small acts of kindness from all ages and walks of life attests to a people so ready to help, so ready to do whatever was necessary to ease the suffering of others. Love!

In closing, I want to add this gift this morning from blogger, Maureen Moss. “As the waves of initiation continue to bathe us, take yourself to the edge of all that you know and leave it.

The juniverse knows exactly where to put your next footstep. Your consciousness… even in its highest moments… has no idea of the divine reality you were born to experience.

Michipicoten Golf Course Kicks Off The 2016 Season

Tracy Amos 22 Years And Managing…

Article & photo by Joan Brooks Tracy Amos is now the General Manager of Superior East Community Futures Development Corporation (SECFDC). She takes over from Dan Friyia, the first General Manager who spent 24 very formative years with the Corporation. Amos has been with Superior East for 22 years. She came with a Bachelor in Business Administration (B.B.A) directly after graduating from Algoma University.

She began as a Business Consultant starting out by doing loans. She then moved into an Investment Manager position. “Dan Friyia was my mentor and he was a great boss. He basically taught me everything, did a lot of mentoring for me.”

“We’ve just done a bit of reorganization,” added Amos who will continue to do loans along with her role as General Manager. “We have a new Financial Officer – Bev Nantel, she will keep track of the Corporate Accounting and Loan Accounting. Chantelle Croft is the Community Development Officer - She’s our bilingual service representative and she will be dealing with the different projects that we have. Ellen McKenzie is a Youth Intern contract position funded through NOHFC which has been extended for a second year. Brenda Tait is our Administrative Assistant.

She’s been with us for 15 years.”

“We have several projects that we are working on right now. Chantelle will be working with community groups on projects with the youth.”

They partner with the North Claybelt CFDC who administers these projects – “Market Your Thoughts” for Grades 7 & 8 and ‘Create a Logo’ for Grades 4-6. Chantelle will visit and offer the programs to all schools within the region.

This is a contest where the winner will receive $25 and go on to North Claybelt. The winner then goes on to a Regional event.

They also have a summer camp in which they partner with the Sault Ste Marie CFDC and East Algoma CFDC. It is a week-long camp for students aged 9–13. Students from throughout the region can attend that camp in Sault Ste Marie. They do fun activities

such as canoeing, kayaking, swimming, have campfires and they stay at the residence at Algoma University. They will also create a product of their own, go to a bank manager to get the funds, create the product and sell it at the end of the program. Chantelle goes to the Sault and stays for the week.

Ellen McKenzie provides the Northeast Superior Mayor’s Group with whatever administrative services they may require. Ellen also helps with some of their projects.

Superior East Community Futures Development Organization has been serving the Superior East Region for 24 years. It is based in Wawa and is one of 24 CFDC’s in Northern Ontario.

It is community based, nonprofit organization run by a volunteer Board of Directors and staffed by professionals who encourage entrepreneurship and the pursuit of economic opportunity leading to jobs, growth and prosperity.

They are funded by FedNor. “I really want to thank our volunteer board members” offered Amos. “They spend a lot of time on meetings and don’t get paid for it. They know their communities.” For SECFDC, the board members are Tina Forsyth - White River; Tom O’Shaughnessy (Chair) Chapleau; Tim Cecile – Chapleau; Earle Freeborn – Chapleau; Joe Buckell – First Nations; Lynn Lavigne – Wawa and Tamara Liddle – Wawa.

Since its inception, they have approved and disbursed $21,145,657, the number of loans were 549, with 2,557 jobs created and/or maintained. This region includes Wawa, Dubreuilville, White River, Chapleau and five First Nation communities.

Tracy Amos, with husband Jeff, have two children. A daughter Alley, 17, who is going away to school in September and a son, Matthew, 14, who is going into high school.

“I really enjoy working for Superior East. It’s been great! I love my job. I love the organization. It’s so rewarding seeing those clients that you helped. Now they have employees, make a good living. We’ve done many things over the years, it’s great to be a part of that."

It’s time to bring out the clubs and practice those swings as golf season gets underway in Wawa. There is something for everyone at the Michipicoten Golf Course.

Michipicoten Golf Club announces that it will be opening its course on Friday May 13th, 2016. The proshop will be open to welcome you on this day. The golf range will be open as well as the

pins out front. The leagues are scheduled to start on May 24 for Seniors, May 25 for Ladies and May 26 for Men. Junior golf will also be starting in late June, contact the Pro Shop as space is limited for this program.

Superintendent and Greens & Grounds staff have been working feverishly getting the golf course ready for play. The golf course has come through the winter in good shape and golfers can expect great playing conditions right from the get-go.

A Frog's Bedtime Story

Bedtime fairy tales are supposed to be nice cute stories that will help your child go to sleep. These are also beloved stories that parents remember from when they were children.

Disney has made lots of them into movies. I am in a foul mood tonight as I put my sixyear old son Harry to bed. He has been acting up all day, and I know that reading a story with a violent ending is not going to help him to settle down, but I am going ahead with it anyway. I found this story on the internet, and printed it off.

It is loosely based on the fairy tale 'Sleeping Beauty', only with a novel twist, and of course a decidedly morbid ending. This is what I read to my him “I remember a night a long time ago when I was just a young frog, that Mummie read me this bedtime story. I got settled down amongst the lily pads while she got the book out, and opened it to the first page.

She began: 'Once upon a time in the land of Frog Nation, there was a giant bullfrog who ruled the swamp along Frogwater Lake. He was called King William. After several years of his and Queen Kate's reign, an heir was assured. When he was born, there was a celebration throughout the nation.

He was named Prince George.

Well, everyone was happy with this news, except Charles, the King's younger brother. He had been next in line, and was now bumped to #3. King William had decreed that he would abdicate the throne once his son turned 18 years old.

Over the years Charles bided his time, planning when and how to get the Prince out of the way. Then one day just before his 10th birthday, Charles met an old toad, Merline, who was renowned as a magician and weaver of spells. After a clandestine meeting one evening in early May, a spell was prepared for the Prince. After sipping a potion that he would prepare, he would go into a deep sleep. This secret spell could only be broken by a human Princess kissing him on the lips and uttering the phrase 'My Handsome Prince'. As he would not be conscious by the time of his 18th birthday – indeed what were the odds of a human Princess coming here to Frog Nation. Therefore King William would have to relinquish all rights to the throne, as he had willingly declared back then, and since the Prince was not 'available', the throne would be his. At his tenth birthday party, Charles was able to drop the potion into the Prince's goblet of lily pad wine. This was the first time he had been allowed to have wine. Merline was hiding behind curtains in the ball room where the party was being held, and uttered the incantation to make the spell take effect. It took about

ten minutes to kick in. Prince George complained about being very tired, and wanted to go to bed. But before he could get up, his head dropped onto the table, and he fell into that deep sleep that Merline had created. King William suggested it must be the wine that knocked him out. He summoned his mother, who carried him up to his room.

The next morning they could not get the Prince to wake up.

Doctors were called, who had no answer for this. Merline was called and asked to cast a spell to make him wake up. He declared in an innocent tone that he didn't have anything that could counter what was obviously just a sleeping disorder. He assured the King and Queen that he would wake up only when he was ready. Their despair was obvious to all those in the court. Word of this mysterious illness spread to the rest of the Nation. Over the years everyone could notice the despondency of the king. Each year he seemed more frail.

Charles was delighted, and wondered if the king might die before the Prince's 18th birthday, and make his ascension to the throne come even sooner.

But he was a patient frog.

However, the King held on, and plans began to take shape for George to take over the throne after his 17th birthday. Charles began the countdown. Then on day 364 things fell apart for him. It began in the morning of May 10th, one day before the Prince's birthday. A group of canoeists paddling along the lake pulled onto shore. A group of the inhabitants called out a welcome. The paddlers were puzzled where the talking was coming from, until one of them looked down into the weeds.

The bravest frog of the group went on: “Welcome to our land. I am Tommy Tadpole.

We have never seen anyone so big before. Are you what they call a 'human'?” The lone woman spoke up: 'Why yes I am. Let me introduce myself.

I am Princess Charlotte from a country far away called Great Britain. I am on a tour of your country. I love your wilderness and wetlands, and canoeing is a passion of mine. I and my party just wanted to pull up to have a bit of lunch and a rest, before we continue on. May we have permission to stay in your Nation for a little while?'

Tommy was all excited, and when he got that way, he always began to stutter. He finally spit out what he wanted to say. 'I can't speak for the King, but I am sure he will welcome you with open arms. Let me hop off and get him for you. A real princess, you say. My, my! I'll be back in a hop, skip and a jump.' He disappeared, leaving the others to settle in. He was out of breath by the time he got

to the palace. He had a hard time getting in to see the King.

But with his pleading and excited tone, the guards finally let him in to the court where the King was holding a session.

Tommy knelt before him, and blurted out about a human Princess being here, and told him that she could be the one to wake him from his sleep, and thus save the Kingdom. He then explained about the spell that he saw Merline cast on the Prince back then on his tenth birthday party. Tommy was the only other frog who knew about the secret spell Merline had put on the Prince, as he had also been hiding behind the curtains where Merline had been standing and casting his spell. Tommy and no one wanted Charles to be king, so any help this Princess could supply would be welcome. It would certainly be a miracle if she succeeded in waking him up again after all these years. So Tommy finally found this right time to tell the King about this spell. Fortunately for Tommy and the rest of them in the room, Merline was not there to refute this claim. The King was stunned, of course, but had no time to think about it.

He quickly hopped over to this bedroom, and put on his regal outfit, which was a red tunic, and navy blue pants. He could not find his crown, and gave up on it, as he rushed out of the palace and over to meet the Princess. He quickly went over the protocol, and got down to the critical part of the occasion.

He explained about the spell that his brother had put on his son. He held his breath while he waited for her to respond as to whether she would agree to kiss a frog. She uttered some words to her other canoeists to the effect that it was disgusting. They chattered back and forth for a bit. The King waited impatiently while they discussed it. She finally turned to him, and to his relief, agreed to do it. So everyone headed back to the palace. The Prince was brought out on his bed, where he had been lying for the past 17 years. The bed was laid on a flat rock, just outside of the palace doors.

Princess Charlotte got down on all fours and leaned over the sleeping frog Prince. For some strange reason, she felt an immediate feeling of love towards him. As members of the royal family watched, she reached down and kissed him passionately on the mouth, and uttered the phrase Tommy had told her to say - 'My Handsome Prince'. She finished with the kiss. To everyone's delight, Prince George began to stir from his sleep. In the background an expletive (first letter S, last letter T) erupted.

Everyone turned to see who said it. Everyone smiled when they realized it was Charles.

They all began to cheer when they saw the Prince sit up, and looked around, partially at the relief to see the spell broken, but more importantly realizing that Charles would not be King after all. King William declared a week of celebrations, starting

with the crowning of the Prince on his birthday the next day, and the immediate marriage of Princess Charlotte and Prince George.'

Mummie paused, and laid down the book. In a somber voice, she declared: “Now you know that fairy tales always have a happy ending. Well, life can be cruel, unlike these stories. I want you to realize it at your young age, so you will have no surprises as you get older. You will not always get your way in this world, and tragedies and disappointments will happen along the way. Are we clear on this, son?” She scared me at this serious tone and message she was giving me. I just nodded, and finally croaked out a yes. Then she went back to the book, reading from the last page. “Since it was such a lovely warm sunny day the coronation and wedding was moved outdoors along the shore of Frogwater Lake. Everyone was so intent on watching the ceremonies, that no one noticed Charles standing beside Merline, as he raised his magic staff, swirled it over his head, did an incantation, and created a horde of snakes. They slithered in behind the others, and began an orgy of 'frog legs', and other body parts, as the King, Queen, and Prince were all devoured first, followed by some of the other court members, and other citizens who could not escape the commotion.

Princess Charlotte was terrified of snakes, and ran to her canoe and headed out into the Lake. In her panic, she tipped her canoe over, and drowned, before anyone could rescue her.

The snakes then slithered away back into the swamp from whence they had been conjured from. Charles yelled at the top of his lungs that everyone should remain calm, while he was installed as the next King of Frog Nation. A reign of terror began, with Merline at his side to protect him, and keep his citizens in line. This lasted for many years, until his oldest son, Prince Harry ascended to the throne after his father's untimely death at the beak of a Great Blue Heron, while he was having a sun bath on a lily pad in the swamp along the lake shore near the palace.

Unfortunately Merline took control of George, despite his jovial nature and attempts to lessen the terror of the previous reign of his father.' Mummie closed the book, and said it was time to go to sleep. But how could I do that, after that dreadful story. I finally did get to sleep that night, but I have kept the memory of it with me all these years. I have not met my 'Princess' yet, but I do have Miss Piggy! I have no brother 'Princes' to worry about. And thankfully there is no Merline around to cast spells. But I am constantly watching for snakes to make a meal of me. Life can be so perilous for a frog, as I suppose it can be for 'humans' too. Oh yes, my name, by the way, is Kermit.”

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day and to honor Mother Earth, we cleaned up another stretch of messed up highway. What a hard job that was! We worked 7 mornings to clean the 7.6 km from the goose to the Ford dealership.

The result? 41 bags of trash, 6 large leaf bags of plastics, pop cans and alcohol containers - too much for an area we want to promote and attract tourists! And on Friday after picking up stinky feces, pee bottles and other disgusting mess, I had a meltdown, reached my breaking point. And miracle over miracle an angel in the form of a gentleman brought us water and coffee (lifesaving) and Terry at Subway gave us a free sandwich. Never tasted a sandwich or cup of coffee that good as that day when my energy level was on zero! Many thanks it was very much appreciated. To all my helpers on that stretch of highway 17 who came out and gave their time: Cindy, Dorothy, Hugette, Ron R., Gib and Krista, my heartfelt Thanks again. We will take on Highway 101 this week.

Stop littering and respect mother earth - it’s the only one we have.

Provide executive secretarial services to Chief and Council, Committee Chairs and Band Manager.

Prepare, copy and distribute agenda packages to Chief and Council, the Band Manager an Committee members and assisting the Band Manager in developing agendas, including all background information, drafting, of motions/resolutions in preparation for meetings.

Advise membership and staff concerning proper procedures for bringing matters before Council and schedules deputations/presentations as time permits on meeting agendas.

Attend all Council and Committee Meetings as Recording Secretary. Ensure that meeting votes, questions and discussions are conducted according to procedures and provide input and advice into procedural matter when directed.

Prepare minutes for transcription and distribution following each meeting, issue official directives with regard to the decisions of Council; discuss and handle business arising from minutes with the Band Manager.

Organize Chief and Council, Membership and Committee meetings by room, seating, space, refreshments and extension of invitations.

Provide draft meeting minutes to Chief and Council, Band Manager, Committee Members and other Departments as directed.

Ensure notes from membership meetings are kept current and kept on record in a Membership Meeting Binder.

Study and understand matters and issues as directed by Council as well as bring matters before Council as directed and as approved by Band Manager.

Research appropriate statutes or previously enacted by-laws; confer with senior administrative staff and Directors; consult with Federal and Provincial officials, legal advisors, consultants as required.

Make arrangements and submit documentation as required for all approved Chief and Council, Band Manager of Committee travel as required.

Bring forward requests, mail and daily priorities to/from the Band Manager and/or Chief and Council.

All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: • Post Secondary or equivalent in training and certifications in business administration and/or office administration and related experience in private industry, public or not-for-profit organizations or other related fields.

• Able to prepare and present agendas, reports, minutes, recommendations, and adjust to conditions as directed and be responsible for appropriate decisions on an executive level.

• Proficiency in office automation systems (i.e. Windows 7, Microsoft Office Professional 2007).

• A working knowledge of the Indian Act and previous experience working with First Nations is an asset.

Spring Ahead To Better Health Care

The Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation’s “Spring Ahead to Better Health Care” campaign has begun with the distribution of flyers by the post office. The Foundation’s current initiative is a Digital Radiography Upgrade which will replace the aging computed radiography currently used in the x-ray room. This will allow Lady Dunn Health Centre to provide excellent care in radiography by staying current with advancing technology.

To date the Foundation has received $25,000 towards our goal of raising $154,000. Your donation will help the hospital realize the purchase of the Digital Radiography Upgrade.

Jennifer will be a member of the staff for a year internship through the Northern Heritage Fund Corporation. Jennifer recently graduated from Confederation College, Wawa Campus with a diploma in Early Childhood Education.

Jennifer is a busy mother of a one year daughter and a seven year old son. As a result of her mother’s artistic influence, Jennifer enjoys painting wildlife and scenes of nature.

She has decorated her new office displaying her artistic talents. Jennifer will help the Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation with fundraising and the hospital with document control.
