Atom Travellers "Most Successful Team" in WMHA Article & photos by Barb Fisher The annual hockey awards ceremony was held last Tuesday evening honouring our young hockey players who have exhibited exceptional talent and sportsmanship in the game of hockey. President Peter Moore thanked everyone for attending and extended recognition and appreciation to all the businesses, organizations, volunteers, hockey families and sports enthusiasts who make the evening possible.The parents and families of our hockey community are instrumental in this success and their involvement is much appreciated; without it, there would not be a hockey program. And to all the kids who enthusiastically look forward to suiting up and joining their peers at the rink, their commitment to the team and respect learned throughout the hockey program is a lifelesson that will ensure their success no matter what their future endeavours hold. There can never be enough thanks extended to the team coaches, trainers and managers. It takes special individuals to step up and give unselfishly of their time and expertise, and our community is blessed with the best.

Thanks again to Debbie Banks for her expertise in digging up photos and assembling these cherished memories.

- WMHA Cup to the "Most Successful Team" in WMHA for the 17/18 season: Atom Travellers. The Atoms played consistently well all season making the winning of the NOHA and NEOHA championship league banners just another skate in the park.

Congratulations.

The evening brought to a close another very successful hockey season. The summer will pass in no time and registration in late summer will begin another exciting season for the many hockey families and supporters in our community. For parents looking for a great activity for their children, consider joining the minor hockey program; it's a lot of fun, hones skills, builds character and forges friendships for life.

CSCNO Schools Don’t Drive Drunk Or Drugged National Road Safety Week: May 15 - 21, 2018 To Offer Warm Welcome To Incoming Kindergarten Students In the coming weeks, Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) French language Catholic elementary schools will be offering a warm welcome to children who are starting Kindergarten in September 2018 as well as their parents/ guardians. All families having registered their children in a French language Catholic school are invited to the “Bienvenue à la maternelle” (Welcome to Kindergarten) event.

This welcoming activity is of great importance for schools since it allows parents whose children will start Kindergarten this fall to develop ties with their school and to establish a strong relationship from the start. In an effort to promote a smooth transition to Kindergarten, this celebration will include several activities for children and parents, and will benefit from the presence of several school ambassadors. Parents will also receive important information relating to speech development, social and daycare services, gentle beginnings schedule as well as school transportation.

In August, incoming Kindergarten students will have the opportunity to participate at no cost in the “Apprends-p’tit” program, in a dozen CSCNO schools. This two-week program will allow students to familiarize themselves with the school environment and Kindergarten routine. Through play-centred activities, children will be able to develop their grasp of the French language, faith, self-confidence and social

skills.

by police in 2015. The rate of these incidents (201 incidents per 100,000 population) is at its lowest since data on this subject began to be collected in 1986.

However, almost 3,000 of those incidents were drugrelated, a figure which is double the proportion from 2009, when drug-impaired data first started being collected.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two most commonly detected substances in drivers who die in traffic crashes in Canada are alcohol and cannabis, respectively.

Both substances can affect drivers in different ways.

Alcohol, for instance, acts as a depressant and slows down the central nervous system, leading to delayed reaction times and impaired hand-eye

coordination, judgment and concentration – skills that are vital for a motorist.

On the other hand, cannabis can affect motor skills including body movement, balance and coordination. Perception of time is also impacted, which can cause issues. Often, drugimpaired drivers will attempt to counteract the negative effects of cannabis by driving more slowly and methodically; however, this can lead to a driver remaining stopped at a traffic light or a stop sign for far longer than is reasonable, and this unpredictability can lead to a collision.

It is also important to note that alcohol and cannabis can have a multiplicative effect, meaning that a driver who has consumed both alcohol and cannabis will be significantly more impaired than someone who has consumed one or the other.

The feeling of impairment can be deceptive at times. Err on the side of caution. Don’t get behind the wheel. To put it bluntly, there is never a good time or reason to drive while impaired. Why put your own life, and the lives of other road users, at risk? There are many alternatives to driving impaired. Plan ahead. Ensure you have a designated driver, call a taxi or stay where you are and sleep off the impairment.

Dramatic Play At SJD

Walk For Justice

Students at St. Joseph French Immersion School walked on Tuesday, May 8th, 2018 in support of clean drinking water for all during the Walk for Justice as part of a Catholic Education Week initiative. The Walk for Justice began as a way for students to explore the two feet of social justice and the Catholic Social Teachings concern for the poor, solidarity, and care for creation. Students com-

mitted to the common good of each and every person, and respect and care for God's creation by learning about ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle in order to protect drinking water for all. As part of this green initiative, students will also be participating in a neighbourhood litter clean up to promote environmental awareness and show care for the environment.

A few months ago Mrs. Bernath’s Kindergarten class at Sir James Dunn created a list of some of the possible dramatic play center themes that they would enjoy. Once the list was completed they quickly got to work creating a Post Office. In order to understand the roles of Post Office staff they toured our local Post Office and were sent back to school with a few posters and a stamp cancelling stamp. It did not take long to convert the puppet theatre into a functioning Post Office in which the students wrote letters, added a stamp to the envelopes, cancelled the stamp and even used all the chairs in the classroom to create a mail van to deliver the mail to Dubreuiville and White River.

The next center on the list was a doctor’s office. In order to learn the roles of the staff this time they watched a very informative video showing the role of the receptionist, the nurse and

the doctor. The Post Office was then converted into a Medical Center equipped with stethoscopes, medicine dispensers, gloves, masks, lab coat, sign in sheet and medical information gathering sheets. Not only did the students and Mrs. Bernath receive medical treatment from the Doctor of the Day, almost all of the SJD staff came in at some point over the few weeks that the center was operational to receive treatment.

This past Monday we took a little bus ride to Tim Horton’s where Mrs. Toffner toured us through the back of the counter so that we could see how to set up our own Tim Horton’s restaurant in our classroom. She then took us to the back to show us how the donuts are made.

We even got to make and decorate our own sprinkle Timbits, then take them back to school for snack time. When we got back to school we opened the huge box she gave us full of supplies. The little ones quickly set up a drive through in our classroom and the employees wore aprons and uniforms while filling coffee cups and donut boxes for everyone to enjoy.

Who knows what our next dramatic play center will be,

but I can assure you that the little ones take their roles very seriously and will make great employees someday. SJD is the place to be!

A Busy Victoria Day Weekend

The Victoria Day long weekend has come and gone. Everyone at the law firm of Eagle, Hawk & Finch had looked forward to the time off. The week leading up to the long weekend had been hectic, due to the short week coming up.

Balden Eagle was the senior partner. His expertise was with probates of wills. He knew that he had to organize the reading of the will for the recently deceased Emily Sparrow at 11:00 a.m.

Tuesday morning in his office. He was annoyed that his secretary, Tanya Warbler, did not bring in the file with the original and photocopies of the will that he had asked for, so he retrieved it himself from the vault and laid it on his desk, ready to work on when he came in Saturday. He was now in such a foul mood that he knew it was no use trying to work anymore today. So he turned the lights off in his office, and left. That was about 3:30 p.m.

Redd Hawke was the real estate expert. He also had several files on the go but there was a huge deal that he just completed for a condominium complex of a numbered company out near the airport that was most important to him on this Friday afternoon.

The signing of the papers was to take place in his office Tuesday afternoon. If you were able to track it down, you would find that it was going to be owned by a Steve Sparrow,who was the principal shareholder. The interesting part of this partnership was who the minority shareholders were Kitty and Redd Hawke. There was nothing else to be done until Tuesday. He left about 3:00 p.m.

Goldie Finch was a divorce lawyer. He had his investigator coming in Tuesday morning early, to fill him in with what he had discovered in the case of Corey and Melanie Heron. He was representing Corey. He had got his investigator, Marshall Duckey, to check out if there was any grounds his client could use to come out of the divorce in a winning position. Then at 1:00 pm both parties were to meet together in his office to compare notes and begin the negotiations. He left the office at 2:30 p.m.

Janice Oriole was Mr. Hawke's secretary. She had not been in to the office most of last week, as her mother had passed away on the Monday. But she did show up on Friday, saying that she needed to finish up some papers that he needed that day. She added that all the arrangements had been made for her mother's funeral on Saturday. Everyone admired her devotion to the firm. They offered their condolences and apologies for not being able to attending the funeral.

The countdown to the weekend had started early in the day. Janice had completed all her work by four, and left quietly for home, where she had lived with her mother all her life. Only now she was returning to an empty house. She kept to herself at work, and rarely talked to the other two that she shared the office pool with. She was still single after all these years, having devoted her life to her mother. Only Mr. Eagle knew her situation. She was his illegitimate child thanks to a fling he had with Emily all those years ago. He had paid her a generous monthly child support over all these past years. He suspected

Emily gave that to Janice as an 'allowance', which was fine with him. It eased his guilt about being such a coward, but the scandal would have ruined him, so he considered this a small price to pay.

He felt bad that he had declined to go to the funeral, but he just could not bare to see Emily and Janice together at the church where the funeral was being held. Reading the will was going to be hard for him too, he knew. It weighed on his mind all that weekend, along with other things.

Evelyn Swann was Mr. Finch's secretary. She and Tanya were good friends, and had their desks next to each other. She was the official receptionist too, answering the phone switchboard, and greeting any of the public that came into the office. Quite often they would go out after work for a drink. But last weekend she had other plans.

She had left a few minutes before Tanya, who was totally frazzled by the end of the day.

The weekend was here, and she was ready to have some fun. She quickly tidied up her desk. She went to the washroom to freshen up before she headed to the bar for an evening of drinking and picking up men. She was more than ready to let off some steam. She was the last one to leave. That was at 5:00 p.m. -- Mr. Eagle got to the office about ten on Saturday morning. He wanted to get in and get his work done as soon as he could, so he could enjoy the rest of the long weekend. As soon as he got to the back door, he knew something was amiss. The door wasn't locked. His heart started to beat a bit faster as he entered the building. The second thing he noted was that the lights were on in the secretarial pool, and the store room where the filing cabinets and the vault were located. He looked around the secretaries' work area.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

When he went into the store room, he turned sick to his stomach. One of the many file cabinets' drawers were wide open, and files were thrown everywhere. Then he felt he was going to have a heart attack as he saw that the vault door was open. He walked over and peaked inside. As far as he could tell, everything looked to be in order. He realized that he was going to have to get everyone in to look it over for themselves.

However, he knew this would be difficult, especially on this long weekend.

As expected, he got no answer with Hawke and Finch. Then he called Tanya. The phone rang for the longest time before a groggy voice answered.

He immediately began: “Miss Warbler, can you please get into the office right away. There appears to have been a break in. I need you here to check out if anything looks to be missing. Please get here as soon as possible.”

Before she could reply, he had hung up. She cursed him, but sensed the urgency in his voice.

She laid back in bed, looking at her partner. What a night it had been, she exclaimed. She hated to have it cut short with Don, or was it Ron – she never was clear what his name was. She just knew he was hot, as a dancer, a great drinking partner, as well as a good 'bed mate'.

She shook him awake, and got him moving. It took a good half hour to get him out of her apartment. Once he was gone, she showered and dressed. It was nearly noon when she got to work.

No one was in the front office where their desks were located.

She called out a 'hello'. Mr. Eagle came out from his office to meet her.

“Thanks for coming. I appreciate it. I need you to look around your desks, and the filing cabinets, and especially the vault. Check it out thoroughly. I need to know if anything appears to be missing. You deal with all this daily, so you would notice if anything was amiss more than I would. I can't get ahold of any of the others. So, get started with your desk, and go from there. Let me know what you find out.”

She began the reconnaissance.

Everything looked in order in her work area. She then went to the filing cabinets, zeroing in on the open drawer. There were files on the floor, and others askew in the drawer. It took her several minutes to gather everything up, and put it back in order. Then she took a quick look in the vault.

After checking everything out, she told Eagle that it was impossible to tell if anything was missing.

He reluctantly agreed. “Yes, you are right. Thank you very much for coming in on such short notice. I really appreciate it. Sorry to get you out of bed so early.

You sounded pretty groggy when I called.” She admitted that much.

But she didn't elaborate why, or say what the rest of her weekend was going to be like.

He went on. “While I was waiting for you, I began thinking. The back door was unlocked, and undamaged, so it can't be a break in. The lights were on too. You turned them out, didn't you, when you left last night?” She paused to think. Hesitantly, she admitted that she had left them on, Then he asked if she locked the doors at least. She paled as she remembered that she hadn't done that either. She was just in such a hurry to get out of there, it never crossed her mind. Reluctantly, she had to admit that she hadn't done that.

That got him annoyed. “What!

That's always a routine part at the end of the day for the last person to leave makes sure the doors are locked, and the alarm is set.”

He thought to himself that he wished that he had surveillance cameras installed earlier when he had a chance. It was just an added expense that they could not afford right then. Now he regretted it.

He paused momentarily, as he dreaded the answer to his next question. “And I bet you didn't set the alarm either, did you?” She meekly shook her head no, too terrified to speak.

He admonished her. “Well, that's just great. Thanks a lot for helping a criminal get in so easily, and get out without being caught.

I bet you never locked the vault either, right?” One more admission of negligence from Tanya. Eagle threw up his hands in frustration at her carelessness.

He yelled at her: “Just great.

Thanks a lot. You can go now. Get in here early on Tuesday morning.” He stomped out of the pool area where they were talking. She broke into tears as she left.

He went back to his office to mull over this mess. He then turned his attention to the Sparrow will that had brought him to the office in the first place. It was a rather large estate with most of the assets, the house and all the contents, stocks and bonds, and a trust fund going to Janice. But her eldest child, Steve, felt that everything should

go to him.

He looked all over his desk for the file. He knew he had left it right in the center of his blotter when he had left Friday. But it was not there now. He looked in his desk drawers, under his chair, and under the desk. He suddenly had a sick feeling that maybe this was what the perpetrator was looking for. With no proof of an updated will, her current one would be the legitimate one to use to divvy up the estate. He knew that this one had him getting the bulk of it. It had been written when he was born. The daughter had been born two years later, and the will had never been updated to include her until just last month.

But with it gone, the other one was the current legal one. He was sick and worried about the legal ramifications that this would put him in as her lawyer.

Now that he was sure what had happened here, he realized that there was not much he could do until Tuesday, except make a visit to the one person that he knew had perpetrated this crime – Steve Sparrow. So he locked up, set the alarm, turned the lights out, and left.

He met him at his home late Saturday afternoon. Of course a denial was made, and Eagle left.

He also realized that the new will was likely destroyed by now. The client had asked him to keep it in their vault, as she did not have any place safe to store it at home, and she did not have a safety deposit box at her bank. He reluctantly agreed, although it was not something he regularly did.

Finally Tuesday came. When everyone finally got in, he called a meeting in his office. He explained what had happened over the weekend, and asked them to check their files.

In the meantime, Mr. Eagle called in Janice to his office. He began. “Ms. Oriole – Janice. I have some bad news for you. I didn't mention it to the others, but the burglar was looking for a particular file. It was the new will that your mother signed just a couple of weeks ago. You were to become the sole beneficiary, excluding your brother from anything. I am sure he is the one who broke in here and stole it. Uhhh...I inadvertently left it on my desk Friday night. So he now has it, and I am sure it is destroyed by now. I don't even have copies of the new will. That was one of the things I was going to do over this past weekend. That means that he will now inherit everything that was supposed to go to you. I am truly sorry for this mess.”

She replied: “Thank you for your devotion to my mother. My brother and I don't get along. He is a greedy nasty person. Oh well, that's life. I can't seem to get any breaks. But he will get his due.

Karma, you know. I am sure he will sell the house as soon as he can. He needs the money, I know.”

Mr. Eagle gave her assurance that the entire firm would do what they could. “After all, you have lived in that house with your mother for all your life. Your devotion to her was admirable., and worthy of some sort of reward, financial at least.”

Just then there was a knock on the door. Tanya came in, and put a file on his desk. “I am sorry to interrupt you, but I knew that you needed Mrs. Sparrow's will today.

I took the file off your desk after you left on Friday. I kept it at my desk . I have made the necessary copies. The original is there too.

guess.” She grinned sheepishly, and quickly left.

Mr. Eagle looked down at the file she had put there. He gasped and stared at it for a moment. He picked up the file and hugged it to his chest. Then he began to giggle in relief that it was okay after all.

He turned his attention to Janice again.

“Sorry, but Tanya just saved my butt, and now bodes well for you..

You are going to be a rich lady, Janice. Your brother may get his just due sooner than you think, my dear. Congratulations.” She just stared at him in utter disbelief.

Then he jumped out of his seat.

He said to her: “Sorry, dear. You should get back to work. I will see you later at the reading of the will.”

They both headed out of his office and went about their business.

Next - Mr. Hawke had had an interesting weekend too..

Someone had hacked into his e-mail account and downloaded the correspondence and contract of this condominium deal, along with other deals that he had filed in there. That would spell disaster if it was exposed. This hack happened on the Sunday morning.

Finally - Mr. Finch got worried when he read his office voice mail that evening of the Victoria Day Monday. There was a message from his investigator, Marshall Duckey, from Friday night He was on a major lead that would incriminate their client's wife in some criminal activity. He would call back once he had it nailed down.

It is now Tuesday, and it is interesting how all three men are tied up in each other's business and personal affairs. First, Steve Sparrow was relying on the money from the will of his mother to finance the real estate deal with Hawke. But that was canceled when Sparrow was found beaten to death by a fireplace poker in his home – an obvious murder, the police declared initially when they found him after a 911 call by an anonymous source claiming to be a neighbour. His body and the obvious struggle occurred in the study. Second, Hawke found out over the weekend that his wife had been having an affair with Steve Sparrow. Third was Finch's discovery through the investigator that Corey's wife, Melanie, was blackmailing the previous owner of the condo that Hawke's group was buying the condo from. He had a lien on it, and she wanted to ensure it was not revealed until the deal was signed. Hawke was not aware of this, or that the owner was listed as Mrs. Emily Sparrow, Melanie's sister. He was also not aware that Eagle was looking after Emily's affairs.

That Tuesday it was also learned that it was Duckey who had hacked Hawke's computer, and then broken into the office looking for any files he could find to corroborate the tip he had received.. He finally found what he needed, and left, leaving the lights on and everything else intact.

Another minor but interesting connection to all of this was the guy Tanya had slept with that weekend was that same guy being blackmailed my Melanie Heron.

One last bomb shell was the discovery of who murdered Sparrow over the weekend. It was Mr. Eagle. He confessed that he went to Sparrow's house to confront him about that will, and they ended up in a struggle. He hated him for how he treated Janice too.

That fueled his anger as he kept hitting Steve. He left him there, but had a pang of guilt, so called in the 911 --Oh what a tangled web we weave!--

Two Bantam players with our Wawa Minor Hockey Association, forward Caleb Boylan and goaltender Andy Couture will be heading to Sudbury August 10-12 to learn from the best.

Our Bantam Travellers have had an outstanding season lead by Head Coach Chris Simon and Assistant Coaches Jamie and Brian Boylan and in part, due to this fantastic leadership, this group of young players enjoyed much success throughout their season on and off the ice. Caleb and Andy are full of talent and drive, and because of their stellar performance have been chosen to attend the OHF/ OHL Under-15 Program of Excellence. This Program is offered in five different locations across Ontario with the program goal to introduce

players, families and staff to supercharged hockey and to provide a unique experience for all participants.

Players participate in intense high performance sessions on and off the ice, and attend seminars on topics such as sports psychology, nutrition and fitness. All players will be housed together in a college residence, they will eat together, learn together and ultimately compete in teams of 21 players which will include 12 forwards, 6 defense, and 3 goaltenders per team. Players are evaluated and given feedback and tips on how to elevate their competition level. The three day program is a fabulous opportunity to expose our two local young men to a highly competitive and fast paced game of hockey that both are eager to compete at. Good luck Caleb and Andy; continue to make Wawa proud and reach for the stars!

The May long weekend is approaching, marking the beginning of the beautiful summer months filled with camping, boating, and travelling to visit friends and loved ones. For many of us, before we set out on the water or the road, or even before we send our kids to school, we tune into The Weather Network to see the daily/weekly forecast, marine conditions or road conditions. But will this service always be available to us?

This fall, Pelmorex Weather Networks submitted an application to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to renew their license for seven more years, attempting to ensure the continued distribution of The Weather Network and MétéoMédia on basic TV cable services. However, CRTC is questioning whether or not The Weather Network meets the eligibility criteria for distribution on basic cable service.

In northern and rural communities, such as those in Algoma-ManitoulinKapuskasing, access to accurate and readily available weather forecasting is essential. Whether it is winter storm reports or spring and fall flooding warnings,

Our concerns over the potential loss of this service differ greatly from those in urban centres and that is the reason it was imperative that they be raised at the CRTC hearings on this topic last week. One thing that separates us in the north from larger urban centres is transportation. Unlike in urban centres, people in rural and northern communities, for the most part, do not have the luxury of accessing public transportation and must rely on their personal vehicle to travel. To do this safely, they require good forecasting and road condition reports.

This is especially true in the winter.

The unique needs of seniors also need to be recognized; these differ significantly from those of younger people who are far more connected with modern conveniences such as smart phones. The basic cable service of The Weather Network is an important tool to seniors as it allows them quick access to weather con-

ditions at any time of day and in their preferred format.

Additionally, even those people who may want to embrace new technology and move to an online service may not have that choice.

Many of our communities still have limited or no internet access, and what is offered is expensive and at times, unreliable, often forcing people to choose between television and internet access.

While forecasting and road conditions are essential in the winter months, they are equally vital in the summer as we open our shores to the thousands of tourists who visit our communities, many of whom are boaters. Boaters of all kinds depend on accurate marine forecasts and the Weather Network provides this for them. Whether someone is going offshore to fish or travelling across the lake, they need accurate, reliable forecasting.

The application submitted by Pelmorex Weather Networks received the support of over 13,000 Canadians and 35 Members of Parliament from across the country and party lines, showing just how vital it is to have this license renewed. This is one of those few topics whose importance transcends party lines. It is clear that people in our area and across the county rely on The Weather Network and MétéoMédia. Its removal from basic service would certainly be felt across the country, especially in northern and rural communities.
