End Of An Era: Algoma News Demolishes The Old Printing Building

Article and Photos By Ken Warwick   Tuesday, May 9th, 2017 marked the day the old printing building at the Algoma News Review met its demise. Stationed at the rear of the property at 33 Ste. Marie Street, the building was home to the presses and other imaging equipment that allowed the Algoma News Review to be printed locally for much of its existence. Only since about 2007 did the newspaper start to be printed outside of Wawa.   Since current ownership took over the business, the building had seen significantly less use. Initially it held just an office and a place to perform some basic tasks related to commercial printing. As the office out back was no longer needed, all of the printing equipment that was required got moved to the front building. As with any evolutionary process, some things die off. Two years ago electricity and water had been severed from the rear building. It was basically just cold storage at that point.   Over the last few weeks, the last of the old printing equipment and as much of the scrap metal that was salvageable was removed so that it could be sent to Sault Ste. Marie to be recycled. Unused paper products and old non-essential files were

destroyed. This preparation allowed MacIntyre Trucking & Excavation to come in and demolish the building. Monty and the team did a fast and efficient job of destroying the building. Tim LeSarge, the operator running the excavator, did marvelous work. Not so much as a splinter fell in the wrong direction. If you need work done, these guys will make sure you are looked after from start to finish, and at a price that makes good sense. Give them a call!   There were some minor issues around disposal of the wreckage. It was initially planned to have the bulk of the wood trucked outside of Wawa and burned off, however the volume of wood presented some issues when that time rolled around. A quick decision was made to bring it to the local landfill.   When the dump truck first arrived at the landfill, it wasn't allowed access. It turns out, you can't just go to the dump with demolition material unless it is cleared through the Municipality's chain of command. Not only that, you need to have a credit

account at the town or you have to pay upfront. This process differs greatly from other towns where you simply show up, get weighed and pay your bill or get invoiced. Thankfully, Heather Rainville and her colleagues at the Town of Wawa made short work of the bureaucratic red tape and got things rolling right on into the landfill. If only Heather could get all of government to move this fast. Heather for Prime Minister!   With the building now gone, it is time for the Algoma News Review and its larger business segment ANP Office Supply to move forward. With three locations now running in Northern Ontario the future has never been brighter for this Wawa based business. Two additional locations are planned for the next year or so, and if the chips fall the right way perhaps a new, larger store in Wawa is coming. Stay tuned!

Wawa Minor Hockey Awards - Recognizing Athletic Excellence

Graduates (left to right): Mason Chalmers, Nash Lewis, Tyler Fahrer, Neil Mills, and Patrick Godbout Article & photos by Barb Fisher   The annual hockey awards ceremony was held last Tuesday evening honouring our young hockey players who have exhibited exceptional talent and sportsmanship in the game of hockey. The evening got underway with the Initiation, Novice and Atom teams taking the lead in singing O Canada demonstrating an enchanting choir of sweet voices...off ice! President Peter Moore thanked everyone for attending and extended recognition and appreciation of all the businesses, organizations, volunteers, hockey families and sports enthusiasts who make the evening possible. Our town's population may be dwindling, but enthusiasm has taken up the slack as our minor hockey program continues to be strong and vibrant. The parents and

families of our hockey community are instrumental in this success and their involvement is much appreciated; without it, there would not be a hockey program. There can never be enough thanks extended to the team coaches, trainers and managers. It takes special individuals to step up and give unselfishly of their time and expertise, and our community is blessed with the best.   Initiation: Head Coach Stacy White, Assistants Curtis Boychuk, Michel Lavergne, Trainer Zack White, and Manager Shelly Neufeld. An added thank you was also extended to Pat Tait, Eben Leadbetter and Brooke Davidson for their mentoring expertise. Story & Photos Continued on Page 2.....
