Wawa Is Going To The Dogs To Give Canadians New Leash On Life Superior Children's Centre

WAWA, Ont. – The Purina® Walk for Dog Guides wants to make more life-changing matches possible for Canadians with disabilities, and on May 29th, Wawa is hosting one of more than 200 walks taking place across the country this spring.

“Dog Guides make the world more accessible for their handlers, whether it’s by navigating city sidewalks or by literally opening a door,” said Wawa resident Nancy Donald, who is planning the local event. “This walk is a way for our community to contribute to a crossCanada success story.”

The annual walk raises funds for Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, a national charity which breeds, trains, and matches service dogs with qualifying applicants. The walk in Wawa is being hosted by Wawa Lions Club, where Donald is a member.

The Purina® Walk for Dog Guides has gained steady momentum over the past 30 years, last year raising more than $1,195,000 nationally.

Purina Pet Care, 100 per cent of funds raised go directly to Dog Guide programs, offsetting the cost of breeding, training and placing Dog Guides, and allowing the organization to provide them at no cost. The walk is a family and dog-friendly event, suitable for all ages and abilities.

The cost of raising, training and matching a Dog Guide with a qualifying Canadian is approximately $25,000, but none of that cost is passed on to the applicant.

On Friday, May 6th, Superior Children's Centre management and staff were accompanied by staff from Three Bears Daycare from Hornepayne, Nancy Maclean and Linda McLeod from Algoma District Services Administration Board.

Together we welcomed several guests throughout the day that provided workshops with plenty of topics of interest. The President of our College of Early Childhood Educator's, Lois Mahon was joined by Melanie Dixon, Director of Professional Practice as they spoke in regards to the Continuous Professional Learning process. Dietary information for the culinary staff was provided by Rebecca Coughlin and information regarding the importance of sunscreen was delivered by Amanda Gauthier. New information about tax free savings accounts was presented by Manulife's Wayne Sanvik.

Celebrating Victoria Day Next Monday, May 23, is Victoria Day! It’s a day that’s been celebrated as the Queen’s birthday since the mid 19th century. Not the current Queen, of course, but Queen Victoria who came to the throne of the United Kingdom and many other countries, including Canada, Australia, South Africa and dozens of others in 1838. She was Empress

of India and very definitely Queen of Canada and Newfoundland, a separate country in those days.

Canada at the time was a collection of British Colonies consisting of Upper and Lower Canada (present day Ontario and Quebec, but smaller in geographic size than they are today), the Maritimes, each separate colonies, being New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,

Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The West was nothing more than the “Northwest Territories” until shortly before Confederation in 1867. Indeed, the Colony of British Columbia joined Canada only after a railway link was established later in the Century.

In 1898 Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, sixty years on the British throne, the longest reigning Queen ever at the time.

Victoria died in 1901.

A set of postage stamps was issued in Canada (and many other parts of the empire) which have become some of the most desirable and rarest stamps for collectors. The higher values in the

extensive set command prices in the thousands of dollars.

The stamps, known as the “Queen Victoria Jubilees” are extremely rare in good condition, particularly in mint condition. The one dollar through five dollar stamps, unheard of face values for the times are premiere collectors items today.

Victoria Day continues to be celebrated annually today. At one time, within my memory, the date of the Queen’s birthday (May 24th) was immutable. It was celebrated on that day no matter what day of the week it fell on.

However, it was not a statutory holiday and was marked primarily by setting off fireworks as night fell. It was

near and dear to the hearts of children, of all ages, as they say.

I recall buying fireworks from any corner store in Toronto, using every penny I could scrounge, for weeks before the event. You could buy them in those days at any age. Prices range from ten cents to one or two dollars for the really big ones.

Only problem was we couldn’t wait too late to fire up our carefully hoarded fireworks. There was school tomorrow morning and we had to get to bed early on a school night. Unless the 24th fell on a Friday or Saturday night.

'Wildfire!'

This spring of 1996 has been dry and windy. In our community of Fire Creek, population 900 located on the shores of Burnt River, we did not get much snow last winter, and no spring rains so far. Consequently it has turned our lawns and gardens brown.

When I step on my grass in my yard, I can hear and feel the crunch of dry grass blades. But despite that, the dandelions are blooming already. I have a nice clump in the middle of my back yard thriving well. Nothing seems to stop them!

Surrounding our village is a vast Jack Pine forest. There is a mill about twenty kms upstream from here, where the wood is turned into chips and then shipped down the river on long barges to Lake Superior and then up the coast to the paper mill at Tree Bay. Normally at this time of year, the river is roaring down past us thanks to the snow runoff. This year there is just a gentle flow.

The barges can get down river safely now, thanks to their design of being long and flat bottomed, but not for much longer I suspect.

That will have a real impact.

This third weekend in May is when most folks burn off the dead grass and other debris around their homes. They are calling for rain, starting Saturday night and lasting til Monday morning. It doesn't sound like a lot of rain, but it should be enough to dampen the ground. Also important is their call for no wind. It sounds like the ideal time to get this done.

Of course like everyone else in town, we have our shovels and hoses ready to douse any embers, that the flames might throw off. I heard the they were going to issue a burning ban next week, so that is another reason to get it done this weekend, despite these dry conditions.

So first thing Saturday morning, I got ready. But then my buddy Stuart came over. I forgot that I had promised to be part of the gang to get his house re-shingled.

He came over when he got no answer on the phone. Of course, my wife Meghan was out shopping with the kids. So I put away my equipment, and headed over to his place. I calculated that we should be finished by two in the afternoon, and I could still get back to my place and get the burning done.

Well, it actually was nearer three by the time we were done. Then of course Stuart had a barbecue ready. As much as I wanted to get away, I wasn't going to pass up that. He was a fabulous cook.

His grilled steaks were to die for.

His wife, Marilyn, made a fabulous salad and dessert. The cold beer sure went down well too. About six as we were finishing up, I noticed that the wind had picked up, and the clouds that had popped up earlier in the afternoon had evaporated, and the sun came out.

There were no signs of rain. I commented that it was just as well I had not gone ahead with my burning.

One of my other buddies there agreed, saying he had also planned to do his lawn too. We both concluded that conversation with a declaration to do it tomorrow, before moving on to the upcoming Blue Jays baseball game on TV that night. So we all ended up

staying at Stuart's place until nearly midnight when the game finally wrapped up.

On Sunday morning I had a splitting headache from all that beer. I also got an earful from Meghan about not letting her know that I was out with the boys.

I apologized like all good husbands do, just to avoid her wrath. Then I said that I had to get out and start that burning. But I did give her a dig by saying - “You do want this done this weekend, right?” - one of those rhetorical questions. She responded by getting up from the table, and went to the sink to wash the dishes, and turning her back to me.

So I headed out in a fowl mood.

Even though it was getting windy, and it was a sunny warm morning, with no rain in sight, I went ahead and got everything set up. I lit the first match and put it to a dry tuft of grass. It caught fire immediately, and began to spread. I watched as it grew in size. I had about half the backyard done when Meghan came out to tell me Stuart was on the phone for me. I asked her to have our 10-year old son, Noah, come out and watch over things while I went inside. I told him to watch to make sure it didn't get too big, or head over to the neighbour's yard. I also told him to use the shovel to beat down any flames that did get too near it. I added about the hose as a last resort.

He nodded understanding. “No problem, Dad. Gotcha.” I went inside and began talking to Stuart.

I meant to just have a short chat, as I didn't want to leave Noah out there alone too long. Well, we got talking about yesterday and him thanking me for my help with the shingling. When he mentioned that he was going to do his lawn today, I remembered that Noah was out there alone. That was the same time I heard him yelling for me to come out right now. I quickly finished my call, and rushed out the patio door. I was shocked to see how out of control this burn had become in just these few minutes. I happened to notice the time on my wrist watch. It had been over 15 minutes that I had been on the phone. Noah was in a panic as he stood paralyzed at the edge of the driveway. I could see he was terrified. He shakily told me that he had it under control, but then this big gust of wind picked up some of the embers and they landed on our neighbour's fence, and up into our spruce tree in the back corner of our yard. Flames were nearing our house too, and he said he couldn't get through the flames to reach the hose. Now they weren't that bad, but I saw his fright had frozen him in place. I felt myself getting that way too. I didn't know which to do first – get the hose turned on, or douse the flames on onr neighbour's fence, or stop the flames from devouring our spruce tree. I yelled for Meghan to get out here. She didn't hear me. In a foolish move, I left Noah standing there while I ran inside to get her. She was on the phone with her mother, their usual Sunday morning chat. When she saw my face, with it's panicked look (I suspect it was anyway!), she immediately cut her call short, and asked me what was wrong. I

yelled at her to come out and help get things under control in the yard. She gasped in horror at the now raging inferno she witnessed as she went out the patio doors.

The smoke was covering the yard in a haze, so she couldn't really see the burning fence and yard of their neighbour, or the spruce tree ablaze.. All she could zero in was the flames that were leaping up the side of our house and garage.

Her first words were: “Get the car out of the garage. It'll explode!

Noah, get away from there.” I had not thought of that. He would not move, so I grabbed him and took him to the front of the house and told him to go inside and get Emma, our daughter, and Goldy, our old Golden Retriever out of the house, and wait out front.

By then our other neighbours had seen the fire and came over to help. One of them told me he had called 911. Unfortunately our little village did not have its' own fire department. We had to rely on Tree Bay to help us out. On a good day, that took a good half hour for them to get to us. Today it would turn out to take much longer.

I went back towards the garage to get our car out. But the siding had already melted, and blown out the glass in the window. I pulled the door open, and with a loud swoosh, the air came rushing out, knocking me to the ground. I lay on my back watching the car beginning to burn. I yelled for everyone to get away. We just got to the street when the garage and car exploded. It knocked us all to the ground. And of course, that spread the fires to our other neighbours' houses. It soon became an inferno, as fires leaped from house to house, inching closer to the forest that surrounded our village. It had gotten so big it was beyond our control. We could just watch helplessly as it went its' own way.

Before the fire trucks could get here, it jumped the highway, and headed into the tinder dry forest.

Once in there, the 'monster' took on a life of its' own, and began gobbling up trees like a starved person at a buffet, jumping from one thing to another.

Shortly after a crew of fire fighters from the mill arrived on the scene, and tried desperately to contain it. But the flames and smoke were too intense and moving so fast. They called in MNR fire crews for help. That evening they finally got here. By then the now truly wildfire had consumed 1500 ha. That was the estimate anyway.

Around dusk the water bombers began dumping water on the worst spots. But because they could not use the river to fill their tanks, they had to go to the big lake. That took time. Due to darkness setting in, they were only able to dump one more load that day. But the ground crews worked all night doing what they could. Thankfully the wind dropped off, and it got cool that night. Then about sunrise it began to rain, lightly at first, but heavier by noon. It rained all the rest of Monday and into Tuesday morning. That did the trick. They were able to contain the wildfire, and got it 'tamed'. There were still hot spots that popped up in the trees, and in the village too over the next few days. By the following weekend, they were able to call it out.

They estimated the final size of the fire to be 3000 ha.

The village was ravished. It looked like a war zone. About half the houses were completely destroyed. But the downtown (all 3 stores, post office and bank!) was spared.

Then the investigation began.

Of course, it didn't take long to zero in on me and my home as the ignition point of origin. Naturally

I was charged with burning without a permit, and not having the proper equipment, and not having a management plan in case of the fire getting out of control.

They were going to charge me with arson too, but came to the conclusion that it was just a costly mistake. Then I was hit with a lawsuit from the village for damages in the amount of ten million dollars, and costs for cleanup and re-construction. Then to pile it on, most of the homeowners who lost everything, like us, sued too.

Could it get worse? Yes, it could, and did. Of course, my insurance company wouldn't pay any costs, as it was my fault. Then the mill sent me a bill for the costs of their fire fighters on the initial attack, and loss of timber. And MNR had to add to my problems too, as they sent me a bill for the wildfire.

We moved in with Meghan's mother, who lived down south.

Just a day after she threatened to divorce me. She didn't want all her assets frozen, tied up with mine. In my despondency I understood her situation. She was a lot wealthier than me. It made sense.

Of course, I could pay all these costs out of my 'petty cash' fund.

As if! I was on the verge of declaring bankruptcy when some good finally happened to me, and our family.

The only thing I was able to save from the fire was my wallet that I had in my pants pocket. For once, I had not taken it out that Saturday night before the fire. And the Sunday morning I never thought about it, thanks to that headache and dry mouth. Days later I was looking for my driver's license at the MTO office, when I came upon a folded piece of paper stuck between two ten dollar bills. I opened it up and realized it was that Lotto 649 ticket I had bought the Friday before that fateful weekend. I headed out to the nearest Mac's to check the numbers out.

For some strange reason, I had a feeling that this was going to be my lucky day. And yes, you guessed it, I won 20 million dollars. I knew that would pay off my debts from that fire, and still have a bit more to stave up bankruptcy. I rushed back and showed the lucky ticket to Meghan. She withdrew her threat of divorce. I knew our love was really stronger than that. So the home front was looking good.

The next thing after paying off those bills was to visit Fire Creek to hand over the cheques to those claimants. I wanted to do that personally despite Meghan's pleas to not go. I also wanted to visit Stuart, my best friend, and pay for his new house that I heard he was starting to build.

So on the Canada Day weekend in July we returned to my disaster. It was surprising how quickly things were improving. All the burnt houses had been leveled and a new building was already starting to pop up. As we drove around our neighbourhood, it was so great to see how everyone was helping each other out. Ah, the joys of a small town. I regretted that I would not be returning to Fire Creek. I knew that we were a community, but I would always have the feeling everyone would blame me for the wildfire to the village and forest, and never accept me back into the fold.

On our street, our house was the only one left like a war zone.

It was so sad to see. But I vowed to clean it up and build a nice new house for some family to occupy in the future.

I made the presentations to the residents that had sued me, at a pre-arranged meeting at the municipal office on Saturday afternoon. That night I met up with

Stuart at the tiny diner on the outskirts of town. Meghan and the kids visited with her best friend, Barbara.

We both had their infamous and delicious hamburger deluxe.

After blueberry pie we sipped on our coffee, as we began to talk seriously. During the conversation, I watched Stuart look around nervously. There was no one else in the diner, but I sensed he had something important to tell me.

He leaned in to me, and whispered: “You know, you should not be taking the full blame for this. I have heard from others in town that you weren't the only one at fault.

For example that Saturday morning I accidentally set our house on fire when I left the bacon on the fry pan too long, and it caught fire, and spread to the rest of the kitchen before I heard the smoke alarm go off. Of course the fire department had your fire to contain, so mine was burned down, but not because of yours. I never did get around to doing my lawn. But then George over on Maple Street also was burning that day, and when the commotion started at your place, he left his own lawn unwatched.

Consequently it also got away from him. Stan on Pine Street the same thing. And Norman was on the logging road south of town looking for wood for his wood stove.

After he had picked up a pile along the road, he stopped for a cigarette and beer. He tossed his finished cigarette out the window, thinking it would just land on the road. But a gust of wind carried in into the grass along the side. It caught fire immediately, and took off on him.

He panicked, and drove home, and never said anything or told anyone.

That was about the time your blaze erupted. I hope you can forgive us all for letting you take all the blame and cost. It must be horrible for you and Meghan and the kids.” He paused and lowered his head in shame.

I put my hand on his arm, and told him about my good fortune, and not to blame himself. I handed him a cheque for the cost of rebuilding his house. He gasped at the amount, and declared that he could not accept it. After much cajoling he did finally take it. We finally left the diner, and I drove him to the basement apartment that he had been able to rent in the untouched part of the village. As we sat in the car I thanked him for his honesty, and assured him that it would remain our secret, and I gladly was paying for the disaster.

I added as a joke, but not really, that I could say this since I had the money. I would not be saying this if I had not hit the jackpot. He chuckled uneasily at my attempt at humour. I assured him we would keep in touch, especially during the house re-construction. Then I said that I had to go and pick up Meghan and the kids so we could get back to the motel we had booked for the night up at Tree Bay. He nodded and got out of the car. As he closed the door, I tried another joke. “How about those Blue Jays! Hope they do better than that last game we watched on TV!” He waved and shook his head as he closed the car door and headed inside.

I drove away. I began thinking as I headed over to pick up Connie and the kids about our future.

Knowing what I know now, maybe they would accept us back into the village without uneasiness.

News From Wawa & Area Victim Services 2016 has brought a few changes to Wawa and Area Victim Services. Beverly Boyd has assumed the role of Executive Director, and continues to work volunteers and staff in the provision of immediate, short term, practical support to victims of crime or tragic circumstance.

Later this year we will mark the 10th anniversary of the organization - ten years of assisting people in crisis whether they be residents of Wawa or guests in the area. Wawa and Area Victim Services is funded through the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General.

Upon request from the Ontario Provincial Police, the Lady Dunn Health Centre staff, or Chadwic Home our volunteers and staff will assist victims in any number of ways. Our support can be very practical – local transportation for those whose vehicles have been damaged in an accident and who are unfamiliar with the community and the services; emotional support– taking time to listen to victims who need a compassionate, caring ear; referrals to other agencies or organizations who may be able to assist- amongst them; the Victim/ Witness Assistance Program, Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, counselling services, professional crime scene clean-up, funeral services and so on. We also provide sexual assault counselling for females 16 years of age and over, and immediate referrals and assistance for males 16 years of age and over.

Wawa and Area Victim Services is also involved in com-

munity events - Safe Kid’s Day, Glad Grad Day, the Fall Fair, and, new for us, the Music Festival.

A huge event that we are proud to participate in is the Annual William Rose Memorial Golf Tournament! This year marks the 10th anniversary of the tournament which raises funds for a bursary granted to a student who is pursuing post-secondary education, in the field of, or associated with, Law Enforcement.

The tournament is being held on a Saturday this year, and we are anticipating an increased number of participants. If you are planning on golfing in the tournament you can reserve your tee off time by contacting Wawa and Area Victim Services either by dropping by at 16 Ganley Street or by calling (705) 856-7852. We would be happy to register you.

Wawa and Area Victim Services relies heavily on the commitment, dedication and compassion of their volunteers.

All volunteers – trained crisis responders and board members were honoured recently at a dinner held during Volunteer Appreciation Week. It was great to break bread with most of them. We truly appreciate how willing they are to give of themselves. A client expressed how she felt about the staff and volunteers, in these words – “your kindness and selflessness will be forever remembered and passed forward to others in need. We are now approaching my busiest time of year, bird-wise.

After working to raise funds this past month, I have my Great Canadian Birdathon coming up on May 21st (22nd for a rain delay) and then we have our annual Dorion's Canyon Country Birding Festival in Dorion, ON. (just east of Thunder Bay) on May 28th and 29th. I am still accepting donations for my Birdathon, trying to raise as much money as possible for Bird Studies Canada, bird conservation and research.

I have raised my highest amount ever this year, at $820 so far ... I would love to finally break the $1000 mark. My husband and I took a drive out to our camp last weekend and were surprised to see the Northern Hawk Owl once again. This time, it was not in the same tree as the first 2 sightings but it wasn't far from it; certainly in the same vicinity.

Makes me wonder if it has a nest nearby.

A Mourning Dove arrived in my yard this week and has been around almost every day. A very skittish bird, it flies away as soon as I open a door most times but sometimes, it will just go and sit in my pine trees for a few minutes. It has only been up on the platform feeder once or twice .... once dueling with a squirrel but I think the Dove

won! Normally it just feeds quietly on the ground underneath. I usually only see 2 or 3 Doves all summer long. The Yellow-Headed Blackbird made a return visit to my yard last week too. This time, I recognized its call from outside of my yard before I finally saw it.

I had a couple of other seasonal firsts this week in my yard: a female Palm Warbler was the first one. They have the distinctive habit of 'wagging' their tail feathers and this was what I noticed before anything else when I first saw her. I only saw her the one time but thankfully, it was enough to i.d her.

My first Warbler sighting of the year is usually a Yellow-Rumped Warbler so seeing her was quite a pleasant surprise. The next seasonal sighting was a lovely bright yellow male American Goldfinch. I only saw him in my yard on one evening but hopefully he'll return with many of his relatives.

I received a phone call this week from a Manitouwadge resident and store owner, telling me that he had just seen a Swan on our local Manitouwadge Lake. I grabbed Big Bertha (my camera) and hopped in my car for the chase. I ended up at a friend's place where there is a dock with a lovely view of the lake. As we were chatting and watching it, we realized that the big bird was swimming slowly right towards us! I was completely amazed by this considering there were 3 loud & rowdy dogs running around the shoreline, playing in the water.

The Swan didn't care. It came to within about 40 feet of the shoreline and honked at the dogs. I don't know if it was curious about them and that's

why it swam in? A Common Loon also swam up to the area and I watched it sink low into the water, staring at the Swan in an aggressive posture. The 2 birds stayed away from each other. Sure was a great sighting!

Our resident pairs of Sandhill Cranes have returned. I can hear the pair on the Manitouwadge golf course from my backyard, calling regularly. We saw a single Crane at our local airport field (along with a half dozen Killdeer) and I'm told there is another pair that was seen down our local highway 614.

These 4' tall birds are hard to miss! They breed here so later in the summer, we'll be watching for their youngsters.

I think my last 4 Common Redpolls have finally moved on, a few weeks later than normal.

The last day I saw them was on May 10th. They will not return now until at least the end of October or into November.

The Tree Swallows are battling over the neighbourhood birdhouses. Today's and tomorrow's cold snowy weather (up here, anyway!) will slow them down some but not for long.

Everything will quiet down soon as nesting season gets into full swing for many bird species.

Bird sightings this week include: Robins, Flickers, Evening Grosbeaks, Dark Eyed Juncos, Common Redpolls, Palm Warbler, White Throated Sparrows, White Crowned Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, Tree Sparrows, Tree Swallows, Cliff Swallows, Pine Siskins, Black Capped Chickadees, Purple Finches, American Goldfinch, Grackles, Red Winged Blackbirds, Brown Headed Cowbirds, Starlings, Crows, Ravens, YellowHeaded Blackbird, Canada Geese, Turkey Vultures, Bald Eagles, Sandhill Crane, Trumpeter Swan, Mourning Dove, Common Loon, Spruce Grouse, Ruffed Grouse, Downy Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Gray Jay, Killdeer, Mallard Ducks, Ring-Necked Ducks and Northern Hawk Owl. Also heard: Red Breasted Nuthatch and Wilson's Snipe.

#1. Romance Scam Scams take many forms. Every Year Canadians lose millions of dollars to the activities of scammers. Scammers do not DISCRIMINATE; they target people of all backgrounds.

Romance Scams are on the rise. This type of scam will try and lower your defenses by appealing to your romantic and compassionate side.

They result from some online dating sites, sharing of emails back and forth and will even send you glamorous pictures.

The scammer will try to build a friendship with you, may send you smaller gifts, maybe flowers. After some time building this relationship they will suddenly need money. They will tell you about a large amount of money they need to transfer out of their country and that when they receive it they will share it with you or pay you back what you sent them.

The reason for asking you for money is to cover administrative fees or taxes for the money to be released to them.

They may even tell you that

they are in trouble with the authorities, no fault of theirs and need money sent so they can go home.

They are very convincing, they tell you they love you, they play on your emotions.

There have been many individuals that have fallen victim to this scam and unfortunately it has cost them life savings.

Don’t be the next one…

PROTECT YOURSELF: • Check website addresses carefully.

• Never send money, or give credit card or online account details to anyone you don’t know and trust.

• Don’t give out any personal information in an email or when you are chatting online • Make sure you only use legitimate and reputable dating websites • Ask Yourself: Would someone I have never met really declare their love for me after only a few letters or emails??

I see love, I enjoy beauty, in so many ways just by being in the present moment. Perhaps, for me, it is the beauty found in nature. I love to gaze out my bedroom window at the crystal clear water of Wawa Lake. I love to walk along the lake absorbing all the active positive and negative ions that come from the water and surrounding woods. I totally enjoy my morning walks with dew still on the still burgeoning grass and the pathway. And I love to dig in the beachfront garden and watch the light rain feed mother earth and see trees budding, crocuses and daffodils spring to life as if by magic.

As many of you know I’ve found a new hobby – adult coloring books. I can look at a suggested page, wonder about what colors to use, how to mix certain colors and to visualize and eventually see a finished product. I have discovered I love to color flowers of all types, colors and designs. I totally lose myself in the activity. I remember my T:10” grandparents magnificent flow-

consciousness that is within us and all around us. Perhaps the greatest way to experience this one beauty is to look for it in the heart and soul of other people.

I’m not talking about physical beauty but what is in others that they don’t really know themselves. I remember a visit with a very special friend a few years ago now. It came at the time when I was experiencing the amazing gift of transformation.

It was a painful time, albeit a pain the preceded the transformative gift of love. At this moment in time I was sharing my incredible love for life, for all whom I knew, and I broke down, sobbing. This blessed friend came and knelt down in front of me, her hands on my knees, I looked up and witnessed the beauty of God, the light of love, in her eyes – I will never forget the gift of acceptance and love she gave me and which helped me begin to live from that place of perfection.

Sunday afternoon: I’ve just returned from ‘seeing’ and ‘feeling’ the magnificent Beauty in Life in our small community. This through the dance of Wawa’s amazing Defined Movement Dance program and the more than 100 youth dancing their hearts out. The costumes were incredibly beautiful, and the littlest performer to the older artists displayed them to perfection. Thank you Sam and all who make this possible every year. My father carried this love into his own gardens, floral and vegetable, in his later life. At that time I didn’t fully recognize the amazing gift they have given me. I just knew I loved flowers of all kind. Love!

I know a local scenic photographer who is a genius at capturing what few of us seldom notice. Actually I know of at least two photographers that are genius at capturing the surrounding scenic beauty. At one time, I took up photography, but never in my wildest dreams would I have seen what they are able to capture. It takes time and presence. And while I studied the art I was not yet aware of the value of time and presence. I am grateful for the gifts of all photographers who capture nature in all her elements for our enjoyment. I am also so grateful for the artists I know who are able to capture mother-nature on canvas, on walls or rocks.

The Puppies Jett & Loki snuggling

Article & photos by Karin Grundt This story created a lot of disgust and uproar not only amongst dog lovers. Matter of fact, it made it to the Sault Star, a Timmins paper, Facebook and websites. At the time I wrote only about the outcome in my booklet under, "Injustice", but I think it is worthwhile writing about this sad story and give credit to the many people who opened heart and home to these two lives that were almost lost due to a cruel brainless human.

It was spring 2012. We had

that year a mild, short winter with less snow than usual and by the beginning of April roads to camps were fairly passable.

One such sunny weekend morning I decided to go out with my dog and check my camp about any winter damage. I had not been out there since late November. On a whim or was it a gut feeling I passed my turnoff and drove to the Firesand Road just to see what slobs, (pardon me, litterers) had unloaded during the winter months. It is sad to see how ignorant and respectless for our environ-

ment so many people are.

The first thing I noticed was a lot of trash on the right side and ravens circling above -- perhaps somebody tossed a moose carcass in the bushes.

As I opened my truck door to let my four legged buddy out, I heard squealing! What kind of bird is that?, was my first thought. My dog's ears went up and his attention kicked in as he dashed straight to a pile of garbage where the squealing came from.

He nuzzled something round, small and black and the sound stopped for a moment. Puzzled I followed my dog and to my horror, I saw a black puppy in the snow. He was trying to bury his tiny face deeper into the mess -- looking for his mother? I picked him up, wrapped him in a dog blanket and turned the heat up in the cab.

I called to my buddy to praise him for his find but he kept pushing at something else in the garbage.

The ravens almost had a feast.

My mind went on overdrive, "Were there more? Where was the mother? Now what?"

Cuddled together in the warmth of my truck the two wet, shivering pups fell asleep from exhaustion.

I was was on the road and the two lives were safe, so far.

I drove to my camp to see if everything was still standing and turned back immediately to find a solution, "what to do with these tiny orphans?"

I was not prepared to be a nurse since I have a dog and two cats already (all rejects).

On my way back I met a camp neighbor. I stopped and showed him my "findlings".

He must have seen the question mark on my face and said "Are you sure they are not wolf pups? Why don't you ask Pat and Rick, they would know what to do with them."

And here is where another coincidence (I call it a miracle) happened. I rushed

back to town with my sleeping babies and went to the address. A short knock and at the same moment the door opened with a surprised Pat saying, "oh, we were just leaving to go to camp for the weekend.." When she saw the frazzled expression on my face, she was willing to look at the pups. She immediately changed her weekend plans, and took the two, blanket and all, into her house; shaking her head, "who would do that... disgusting!"

The chances of survival looked slim. They were too weak to take any nourishment, especially the quiet one with the tan markings, who was already to weak to whimper in the snow. He must have had brain damage because he kept rolling towards one side.

Out of the blankets Pat made a nursery in her kitchen so she could keep a constant eye on the two and carefully injected Pablum and milk into their little snouts.

It seemed they were not even weaned when this moron, whom ever it was tossed them out. For a few days the situation looked not good, even Pat was discouraged. We exchanged updates every few days and knowing the pups were in the best of care, my anger and the need for justice for these two innocent lives kicked in (after all, my dad was a detective).

It is amazing how much information trickles through the grapevine. Of course the story was in the papers and on the Internet; citizen tips trickled in until it narrowed down to a name and address.

Now we could involve the police. At the time we still had something like a humane society and charges were laid.

The owner who had eight more pups was forced to hand them over in care of the humane society. They were

fostered and all found good homes.

The court case that followed was a farce, disappointing, laughable, waste of time!

But back to my two lucky ones. Slowly there was hope that they would make it. They could now lap their puppy chow and where the black pup was almost spunky, the one with the tan markings still had difficulties standing up.

As I found out through the investigation, the pups were thrown out the night before, ripped away from the warmth and comfort of their siblings and nourishing mother. The damage on the black and tan one was more serious to his brain as the vet stated. "Who would do such a cruel thing?" I have no words strong enough to describe that monster, may he get his punishment eventually. Weeks passed and both healed, developed and grew into 'teenagers', in other words, ready for adoption.

One particular couple who followed the story online, was interested in adopting both, since they went through such trauma together. They named the black one "Jett", and the black and tan one "Loki".

They live happy and free now in Echo Bay and have all the benefits of a loving, treasured family.

They get regular vet visits, each has their own cot for outside, and beds inside; and a large area where they can run. They are on their families Facebook page constantly.

Despite their ordeal in the beginning they must be the luckiest ones from a litter of ten.

I feel privileged that I found these helpless critters just in time and I can't stress the fact to spay and neuter "man's best friend" to prevent tragedies like this in the future.

Amazingly Graceless I yearn to be graceful. I want to be 'Le Gros Jean' – Big Jean Beliveau, captain of the Montreal Canadians, elegant, magisterial, circling centre ice like a Lipizzaner stallion in a whirl of ice chips.

So far, it hasn't panned out. I have, pretty much since I tumbled from the womb, cartwheeled and pratfallen through life as a ham-fisted, foggy-minded maladroit.

I've tried to compensate by at least being graceful with words, but that hasn't panned out either. Take my present conundrum. I have received, unsolicited, an eight and a half pound manuscript of a novel from a guy I met ten years ago. He wants me to review it. The manuscript is, not to put too fine a point on it, a dog.

But I don't want to crush the guy. I know how hard it is to write a book and I know how utterly ruthless some book reviewers can be.

Make no mistake, inside many mild-mannered book reviewers there lurks a barracuda lusting to rip into some writerly flesh. And nobody does it nastier than a writer reviewing another writer.

Hugh Leonard writing about the author of Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim: “Reading Joseph Conrad is like gargling with broken glass.”

George Jean Nathan on George Bernard Shaw: “He writes his plays for the ages – the ages between five and twelve”.

Mary McCarthy on Lillian Hellman: “Every word she writes is a lie, including 'a' and 'the'”.

And listen to Dylan Thomas tearing a strip off Dame Edith Sitwell: “Isn't she a poisonous thing of a woman, lying, concealing, flipping, plagiarizing, misquoting and being

as clever a crooked literary publicist as ever.”

The Dame could give as good as she got. Here she is slipping the stiletto to Virginia Woolf: “Woolf's writing is no more than glamorous knitting. I believe she must have a pattern somewhere.”

And check out Ms. Woolf putting the boots to James Joyce's Ulysses: “The work of a queasy undergraduate squeezing his pimples”.

Ouch.

When it comes to literary incisors, the author who gave us Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn could bare them as required. Mark Twain managed to eviscerate two literary icons in a single sentence: “(Edgar Allen) Poe's prose is unreadable, like Jane Austin's.”

But when it comes to literary disembowelments Dorothy Parker was the Piranha Princess. Writing under the deceptively pacific byline 'Constant Reader', Ms. Parker left a lot of blood in the water. Of one author's work she said: “This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force”.

Reviewing A.A.Milne's The House of Pooh Corner, Parker acknowledged that “speaking ill of Mr. Milne puts one immediately in the ranks of one who sets fire to orphanages” but then the sickly sweet 'tiddly-pom' excesses of Milne's style got to her and she finished her review with “Tonstant Weader fwowed up.”

Heady stuff, but hardly graceful. Here's what I came up with for the eight and a half pound novel that guy wants me to review: “I cannot recommend this book too highly.”

The successful applicant will plan and manage the implementation of computer, communication and network technology for the Algoma District School Board. Computer technology is used for learning in schools and worksites by a variety of personnel, especially students and teachers.
