Canadian Red Cross Honours Volunteers

Article & photos by Barb Fisher The 18th annual Red Cross Volunteer Awards dinner honoured once again the amazing volunteers who help shape our community's reputation as a great little town. Darlene Trovarello, Community Services Co-ordinator opened the celebration by thanking all volunteers who provide services in the North Algoma District. In presenting "2017 In Review" the many accomplishments and changes over the year were acknowledged.

Diane Lajambe, Deputy Director Community Health and Wellness added her congratulations and noted that Wawa is her favourite community to visit - so much enthusiasm from the impressive number of 30 volunteers drawn from such a small population.

Jenni McDonald, Disaster Management Coordinator spoke next giving great praise to our Disaster Services amazing volunteers who really "have it all together", and "keep it all together"!

Jenni continued by outlining the seven Fundamental Principals that guide the Red Cross in the many facets of their service, and gave much praise to Darlene Trovarello who has worked diligently in coordinating the many programs headed by the Red Cross since its inception 18 years ago.

Meals on Wheels is now 18 years old. The program has 15 volunteers who just this past year delivered 1,500 meals in Wawa and White River.

The Transportation Program is 13 years old and fills the needs of the frail elderly by providing rides for in-town and out-of-town medical appointments. Recently funding was secured through the Ministry of Transportation for a 5-year extension to the Transportation service also in White River.The Home Maintenance Program cleared over 1,000 driveways this winter! The Friendly Visiting Program has logged many hours with volunteers visiting the elderly, and Telephone Assurance volun-

teers provided a welcoming service in giving our vulnerable seniors peace of mind.

The Assisted Living Program continues to have amazing success in it's fifth year. Emily Boychuk and her attentive staff have our seniors well taken care of. Much praise is given from the health care community and families for this program which involves extensive hours to keep high risk seniors in their homes beyond the years that normally would be possible.

Many door prize winners were picked randomly from the hat and most everyone went home with a flowering plant or a red cross satchel bag, and after a delicious roast beef dinner with all the trimmings prepared by the Legion Ladies, the awards for service got underway. Three year milestone certificate and pins were awarded to Margaret McMillan and Dave Seguin providing Transportation services, and Dorothy Egan and Maria Lelanc who deliver Meals on Wheels. Five Year Milestone awards went to

Dan Bruno, Meals on Wheels, Transportation provider and Disaster Services operator, Dave Farago and Elizabeth Woods, Meals on Wheels and Barb Sutherland, Meals on Wheels and Disaster Services.

Louis Dereski received fifteen year milestone accolades for his impressive service with Meals on Wheels.

North American Safe Boating Awareness Week will take place across Canada from May 19th to May 25th, 2018. The purpose of this initiative, managed by the CSBC (Canadian Safe Boating Council) and its partners, is to promote safe and responsible boating practices to the estimated 15 million recreational boaters in Canada.

Although boating related fatalities have trended downwards in past years, there continues to be an average of over 100 boating related deaths annually in Canadian waters. There are five key boating safety behaviours to be delivered, all directed towards the most common boating related accidents. They include: 1. Wear a Lifejacket 2. Boat Sober 3. Be Aware of the Risks of Cold Water Immersion 2018 Focus The impending legalization of cannabis along with the rise in prescription narcotic use is causing significant additional concern for boating safety advocate groups, enforcement agencies and first responders alike.

Wawa Wood Heat Rebate Program

Th e Economic Development Corporation of Wawa announced on April 12th, 2018 that Wawa had been selected for a Pilot Wood Heat Rebate Program funded by the Ontario Government’s carbon market.

The Wawa Wood Heat Rebate Program offers residents and business owners located in Wawa, Hawk Junction or Michipicoten First Nation rebates when upgrading their old wood heat appliance with a new, more efficient wood heat appliance, or if they switch their oil or propane heat appliance to a wood heat appliance, or if they supplement their existing oil/propane appliance with a wood heat appliance.

Cord wood and pellet appliances both qualify for the rebate. These rebates are substantial and vary according to which appliance you purchase. Residents can access up to $12,000 for residential rebates and up to $60,000 in commercial rebates.

If you want to learn more about the program, the Wawa EDC is hosting a Wood Heat Tradeshow on May 30th from 4:00 – 9:00 pm and on the 31st from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, 2018 at the Wawa Community Centre. There will be wood heat retailers with appliances on site, a local WETT inspector and multiple other

vendors showcasing their products which include appliances and fuel (wood/pellets).

There will be workshops such as “Understanding Biomass Heating and If It’s Right For You” and “Pellet Stoves 101: A Homeowners Perspective”.

There will also be free giveaways and a “Summer Prize Pack” door prize worth $150!

Grill Safely This BBQ Season With BBQ season upon us, the Standards Council of Canada is questioning the safety of the instruments we use to clean our BBQs; namely, wire-bristled brushes. The agency in charge of establishing Canadian standards is warning Canadians about the safety of wire-bristled BBQ brushes after several reports of people accidentally ingesting wire bristles from these brushes.

It is common for these bristles to come loose when brushing the barbecue clean.

These loose bristles have then been known to get stuck on food cooked on the grill.

They can cause serious injury and even fatalities if ingested, often being lodged in people’s throats and leading to medical interventions including surgery.

In 2017, Health Canada investigated the safety of these wire-bristled brushes after at least nine people were injured due to swallowing wire bristles from barbecue brushes.

The investigation found 28 reported incidents of injury from ingesting stray wire bristles since 2004. Despite these findings, Health Canada determined that recalls or regulations were not required at that time.

However, their perspective seems to have shifted since that report in December of last year. The Standards Council of Canada has issued a request for proposals, seeking an outside contractor to

help with the development of a National Standard of Canada for barbecue brushes.

The Retail Council of Canada and industry exports are also on board and have decided to consult on this issue as well.

Both consultation processes will take into consideration the construction, testing, sale and use of these tools.

In the meantime, Health Canada does recommend that people regularly replace wire-bristled brushes, throwing them out when bristles become loose, or switch to wire-free alternatives. But with the risks so high, do these recommendations go far enough? Many Canadians are getting ready to enjoy meals prepared on grills that have been cleaned by wire-bristled brushes and are unaware of the risks they are taking. Safety warnings are not always headed or displayed prominently enough, leaving many people, including small children, exposed to these possibilities.

Regulations must be established before we have a fatality on our hands At the end of the day, one thing remains clear – bristle detachment is not specific to one particular brand, so despite how good quality you believe your brush to be, the risk still exists. This grilling season, it would be prudent to switch to a non-wire barbecue brush.

Dispute Leads To Assault Charge For Wawa Male (WAWA, ON) - On Saturday May 12, 2018 at approximately 5:00 pm members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Wawa) Detachment responded to a local Wawa address regarding a report of a dispute. At the scene investigation revealed that an altercation had taken place between a male and a female.

As a result a 19 year old Wawa, Ontario male was arrested and charged with the following offence: • Adult Assault - Spousal contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa, Ontario on June 11, 2018.

Une belle délégation d’élèves du CSCNO participera aux Jeux franco-ontariens

Du 18 au 21 mai, plus 650 élèves francophones des 105 écoles secondaires catholiques et publiques de langue française de l’Ontario se réuniront à Ottawa pour participer à la 25e édition des Jeux franco-ontariens. Tenu à l’école secondaire publique Omer-Deslauriers sous le thème « Au-delà des frontières », ce rassemblement annuel et provincial de la jeunesse francophone de l’Ontario est fort populaire parmi les élèves du Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO).

Avec une participation 45 élèves, le CSCNO comptera une belle délégation aux Jeux. Ces élèves représenteront neuf écoles secondaires du CSCNO : Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury), ÉSC Champlain (Chelmsford), ÉS du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury), ÉSC Franco-Ouest (Espanola), ÉSC Jeunesse-Nord (Blind River), ÉSC l’Horizon (Val Caron), ÉSC Trillium (Chapleau), ÉS Notre-Damedu-Sault (Sault-Ste-Marie), et ÉS Saint-Joseph (Wawa).

Dans le cadre des Jeux franco-ontariens, les élèves feront valoir leurs talents dans huit grands volets : sports, arts visuels, improvisation, AGAquiz, arts du cirque, musique, danse et médias.

Présenté par la Fédération de la jeunesse franco-ontarienne (FESFO), ce rassemblement regroupera des artistes,

des athlètes et des leaders étudiants venus de tous les coins de la province afin de célébrer leurs talents, leur culture et leur fierté. « Chaque année, nos élèves reviennent des Jeux transformés et rayonnants d’une véritable fierté francophone, » déclare Mme LyseAnne Papineau, directrice de l’éducation au CSCNO. « Par leur participation à cette activité identitaire dynamique, nos élèves du secondaire sont mieux outillés pour tenir un rôle de leadership dans leur école et leur communauté. » Le Conseil scolaire catholique du NouvelOntario offre une éducation catholique de langue française reconnue pour son excellence. Elle est aussi un symbole d’espérance qui nous rappelle que Dieu est fidèle et toujours présent auprès de nous. Les élèves de 9e année de l’École secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa), inscrit au cours d’enseignement religieux avec Mme Katrina McCracken, ont partagé plusieurs messages d’espoir écrient sur des ancres, dans l’aile du secondaire pour encourager leurs copainsà retrouver de l’espoir dans les situations de tous les jours. Les élèves espèrent promouvoir la joie et la positivité même durant les moments difficiles. Bravo, 9e, pour votre beau geste!

SJD "Art Week" Displays Artistic Talent

Article and photos by Barb Fisher The library walls of Sir James Dunn School were lined with blazing colour, and everyone was invited to visit and marvel at the wonderful Lake Superior splendour captured by the amazing artistic talent of JK/ SK through grade 8. The grade 8 student council known as the "Game Changers" wanted to add another dimension to their drive in making a difference, and to encourage their fellow students to widen their horizons exploring new challenges and opportunities. The Game Changers applied for the SpeakUp Grant offered by the Ontario Government to encourage events such as this.

In successfully securing the grant, the students very cleverly took advantage of our beautiful

wilderness landscape, painted by many artists including the famous "Group of Seven" and that this iconic paradise is right here on our doorstep.

And successful they were; a grant in the amount of $2,125 was awarded and the wheels were set in motion to buy paint and equipment, and to invite art instructor Taimi Poldmaa as their mentor.

Taimi Poldmaa is an accomplished artist in her own right who paints and instructs at the Berkana Art Studio in the Soo. She has studied art extensively including contemporary abstract painting, and theory and technique of the Group of Seven. By heading SJD's Art Week, Taimi assisted the kids in recognizing the elements of design, colour and composition through drawing and painting exercises using various proven techniques, and encouraging free expression by thinking and feeling outside the box.

After a busy week of testing the kids' right side of the brain, the canvases were dry, the cleanup complete and the gallery assembled, which in displaying the masterpieces is another art in itself. As I walked into the library I was met with a sea of colour, some canvases lining the walls and others positioned on

easels throughout the room. I was totally drawn in with the exposition. Riley accompanied me through the displays to showcase her fellow grade one classmates' wall of spring flowers; the artists obviously transformed in their creations. The productions graduated from whimsical colourful scenes on bristol board to the higher grades who investigated different proven techniques on canvas. Flowers gave way to mountains, sunsets, moonlit nights, wild geese in flight, moose in quiet solitude, camp fires, tents and a fascinating display of the monochrome technique by the grade 8 students. Their challenge was to create the focus in one colour only, then build and develop the dimensions by tinting with white and shading with black, and the results were amazing. The Superior shoreline was captured in stunning silhouette, each one as unique as the artist behind the brush.

My art appreciation has just been rebooted; well done SJD!

A Frog's Bedtime Story

Bedtime fairy tales are supposed to be nice cute stories that will help your child go to sleep. I am in a foul mood tonight as I put my six-year old son Harry to bed.

He has been acting up all day, and I know that reading a story with a violent ending is not going to help him to settle down, but I am going ahead with it anyway. I found this story on the internet, and printed it off. It is loosely based on the fairy tale 'Sleeping Beauty', only with a novel twist, and of course a decidedly morbid ending. This is what I read to my son- “I remember a night a long time ago when I was just a young frog, that Mummie read me this bedtime story. I got settled down among the lily pads while she got the book out, and opened it to the first page. She began: 'Once upon a time in the land of Frognatia, there was a giant bullfrog who ruled the swamp alongthe shores of Frogwater Lake. This country was ruled as a monarchy. The ruler was King William. After several years of his and Queen Katherine's reign, an heir was assured. When he was born, there was a celebration throughout the nation. He was named Prince George. Well, everyone was happy with this news, except Charles, the King's younger brother. He had been next in line, and was now bumped to #2. As part of the celebrations of this birth King William decreed that he would abdicate the throne once his son turned 10 frog years old.

Over the years Charles bided his time, planning when and how to get the Prince out of the way. He knew the Prince's demise had to be beyond suspicion, especially towards himself.. Then one day just before his 5th birthday, Charles met an old Bullfrog, Merline, who was renowned far and wide as a magician and weaver of spells. After a clandestine meeting one evening in early May, a deal was struck that Merline would prepare a spell for the Prince to be used at a later time. After sipping a potion that he would prepare, he would go into a deep sleep.

This secret spell could only be broken by a human Princess kissing him on the lips and uttering the phrase 'My Handsome Prince'. As he would not be conscious by the time of his 10th birthday – indeed what were the odds of a human Princess coming here to Frognatia, therefore King William would have to relinquish all rights to the throne, as he had willingly declared back then, and since the Prince was not 'available', the throne would be his. At his 7th birthday party, the time came when Charles was able to drop the potion into the Prince's goblet of lily pad wine. This was the first time he had been allowed to have wine. Merline was hiding behind curtains in the ball room where the party was being held, and uttered the incantation to make the spell take effect. It took about ten minutes to kick in.

Prince George complained about being very tired, and wanted to go to bed. But before he could get up, his head dropped onto the table, and he fell into that deep sleep that Merline had created.

King William suggested it must be the wine that knocked him out. He summoned his mother,

who carried him to his room, with the help of two of her attendants. The next morning they could not get the Prince to wake up. Doctors were called, who had no answer for this. Merline was called and asked to cast a spell to make him wake up. He declared in an innocent tone that he didn't have anything that could counter what was obviously just a sleeping disorder. He assured the King and Queen that he would wake up only when he was ready. Their despair was obvious to all those in the court.

Word of this mysterious illness spread to the rest of the country.

Over the years everyone could notice the despondency of the king. Each year he seemed more frail. Charles was delighted, and wondered if the king might die before the Prince's 10th birthday, and make his ascension to the throne come even sooner. But he was a patient frog.

Indeed the King held on, and plans began to take shape for George to take over the throne after his 9th birthday, on the hope that he would wake up in time.

That included approaching Charles and making contingency plans for him to ascend to the throne if Prince George did not wake up. Charles expressed his concern and hope that George would recover in time, and was grateful for the King's consideration for making him part of the plans. Once alone, however, he croaked in delight at his older brother's kind nature. It will make his takeover of the throne so much easier, he chuckled to himself.

So Charles and the nation began the countdown. Then on day 364 things fell apart for him.

It began in the morning of May 10th, one day before the Prince's birthday. A group of canoeists paddling up the lake pulled onto the shore. A group of the inhabitants called out a welcome. The paddlers were puzzled where the talking was coming from, until one of them looked down into the weeds. The bravest frog of the group went on: “Welcome to our land. I am Tommy Tadpole.

We have never seen anyone so big before. Are you what they call a 'human'?” The lone woman spoke up: 'Why yes I am. Let me introduce myself. I am Princess Charlotte from a country far away called Great Britain. I am on a tour of your country. I love your wilderness and wetlands, and canoeing is a passion of mine. I and my party just want to pull up to have a bit of lunch and a rest, before we continue on.

May we have permission to stay here for a little while?' Tommy was all excited, and when he got that way, he always began to stutter. He finally spit out what he wanted to say. 'I can't speak for the King, but I am sure he will welcome you with open arms.

Let me hop off and get him for you. A real princess, you say.

My, my! I'll be back in a hop, skip and a jump.' He disappeared, leaving the others to meet and talk to each other. Tommy was out of breath by the time he got to the palace. He had a hard time getting in to see the King.

But with his pleading and excited tone, the guards finally let him in to the court where the King was holding a session. He knelt

before the King, and blurted out about a human Princess being here, and told him that she could be the one to wake Prince George from his sleep, and thus save the Kingdom. He then explained about the spell that he saw Merline cast on the Prince back then on his 7th birthday party.

Tommy was the only other frog who knew about the secret spell Merline had put on the Prince, as he had also been hiding behind the curtains on the opposite side of the room from where Merline had been standing and casting his spell. Tommy and no one wanted Charles to be king, so any help this Princess could supply would be welcome, Tommy bravely blurted out. It would certainly be a miracle if she succeeded in waking him up again after all these years, but worth trying, he pleaded to the King. Fortunately for Tommy and the rest of them in the room, Merline was not there to refute this claim. The King was stunned, of course, but had no time to think about it. He quickly hopped over to this bedroom, and put on his regal outfit, which was a lime green tunic, with a yellow frog emblazoned on the chest, and dark green pants.

He could not find his crown, and gave up on it, as he rushed out of the palace and over to meet the Princess. He quickly went through the protocol, and got down to the critical part of the occasion. He explained about the spell that his brother had put on his son. He held his breath while he waited for her to respond as to whether she would agree to kiss a frog. She uttered some words to her other canoeists to the effect that it was disgusting. They chattered back and forth for a bit.

The King waited impatiently while they discussed it. She finally turned to him, and to his relief, agreed to do it. So everyone headed back to the palace. The Prince was brought out on his bed, where he had been lying for the past 3 years. The bed was laid on a flat rock, just outside of the palace doors. Princess Charlotte got down on all fours and leaned over the sleeping frog Prince. For some strange reason, she felt an immediate feeling of love towards him. As members of the royal family watched, she reached down and uttered the phrase Tommy had told her to say - 'My Handsome Prince'.

Then she kissed him passionately on the mouth, and to everyone's delight, Prince George began to stir from his sleep. In the background an expletive (first letter S, last letter T – oh , you guessed it.

Yes, he uttered a 'shoot') erupted.

Everyone turned to see who said it. Everyone smiled when they realized it was Charles. They all began to cheer when they saw the Prince sit up, and look around.

The cheers were partially at the relief to see the spell broken, but more importantly realizing that Charles would not be King after all. King William declared a week of celebrations, starting with his promised abdication of the throne, and the crowning of the Prince on his birthday the next day, and the marriage of Princess Charlotte and Prince George right after. They kissed once more in a moment of excitement.

Unfortunately for her, I guess, or maybe she was okay with what happened next - we just don't know – she turned into a beautiful frog. This was one of the side effects of breaking Merline's spell.

It was supposed to have worked the other way, when after being kissed, George was supposed to turn into a human Prince. This was a departure from the known

fairy tale.”

Mummie paused, and laid down the book. In a somber voice, she declared: “Now you know that fairy tales always have a happy ending. Well, life can be cruel, unlike these stories. I want you to realize it at your young age, so you will have no surprises as you get older. You will not always get your way in this world, and tragedies and disappointments will happen along the way.

Are we clear on this, son?” She scared me at this serious tone and message she was giving me. I just nodded, and finally croaked out a yes. Then she went back to the book, reading from the last page.

“Since it was such a lovely warm sunny day the coronation and wedding was moved outdoors along the shore of Frogwater Lake. Everyone was so intent on watching the ceremonies, that no one noticed Charles standing beside Merline, as he raised his magic staff, swirled it over his head, did an incantation, and created a horde of snakes.

They slithered in behind the others, and began an orgy of 'frog legs', and other body parts, as the King, Queen, and Prince were all devoured first, followed by some of the other court members, and other citizens who could not escape the commotion. Princess Charlotte was terrified of snakes, and hopped into the castle and got herself safely locked in her room, and thus saved from being devoured by these serpents.

The snakes eventually slithered away back into the swamp from whence they had been conjured from. Charles yelled at the top of his lungs that everyone should remain calm, while he was installed as the next King of Frognatia. His first act was to have Princess Charlotte to come out of her room, where she was forced by royal decree to become his wife and thus Queen. No one raised any objections openly, but everyone there got a feeling of dread as a reign of terror began, with Merline at his side to protect him, and keep his citizens in line. It was not long after that the royal court announced the birth of a Prince, who was named Harry. Two years later another son was born, who was named Philip, and then in the next year a Princess was born, who was named Elizabeth.

This reign lasted for many years, until his oldest son, Prince Harry ascended to the throne after his father's untimely death at the beak of a Great Blue Heron, while he was having a sun bath on a lily pad in the swamp along the lake shore near the palace.

Unfortunately Merline's influence continued to be felt as Court Adviser over now King Harry.

He tried to be independent from Merline, and was to some extent.

Fortunately now Queen Charlotte also influenced him. She had suggested a mission for Merline to the King. He liked the idea, and so ordered Merline to conduct a survey of the swamp country, to gauge how things were going, and assess the peoples' feelings towards him and his reign. That left him alone to pursue his own agenda, which was less dictatorial. He decreed more free time for his frog subjects to procreate, in order to increase the population for a continued survival of Frognatia. He also declared more food could be kept for their own consumption, and less for the royal court. He also announced that there would be an improved patrol system set up to insure the safety of all citizens from predators such as snakes, birds, and such. Things like that helped

his popularity increase measurably as time went on. By the time Merlin go back to the court, he quickly realized his influence was gone, and so he moved on to the country of Froglegia to see what he could achieve there, with his plan of revenge towards the King and Queen by inciting a war against Frognatia. With his help of spells and magic, he would have the army of Froglegia over run Frognatia, and oust the King and Queen from their throne and amalgamate it under the dictator Poutine. That would leave only one person to control, rather than a whole royal family.

However before Merline's plan could be fulfilled, there was a man made disaster inflicted on both countries. The entire dictatorship of Frognatia and the Kingdom were destroyed. A dam was built upstream on Frogwater Lake and the swampland of these two abutting countries was drained, and everyone died from the drought that followed. So poor Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth never got to reign over the Kingdom. But Merline and his magic survived, as he was able to hop along to the next swamp a mile or so away and gain back his strength and power over the leaders of that country by the name of Froggerland.'

Mummie closed the book, and said it was time to go to sleep.

But how could I do that, after that dreadful story. I finally did get to sleep that night, but I have kept the memory of it with me all these years. I have not met my 'Princess' yet, but I do have Miss Piggy! She is enough of a handful for me. And thankfully there is no Merline around to cast spells. But I am constantly watching for snakes to make a meal of me. Life can be so perilous for a frog, as I suppose it can be for 'humans' too, I guess, seeing Queen Charlotte never got to revert to a 'human'. Oh yes, my name, by the way, is Kermit.”

Despite my greatest fears that I would keep my son, Harry, awake, did not materialize. He asked me if I would make a great King. I assured him that he definitely would. Then he declared he thought so too, and assured me that he would never have let Merline boss him around. Then he was out like a light. Despite my earlier anger with him, I could not help smiling and thinking what a wonderful boy he was becoming. As I got up off his bed and turned out the light, I turned back and watched him for a few seconds as he began his heavy breathing that signaled that he was sound asleep. I vowed to be a more patient parent. Then I had a thought. I sent to my bedroom and pulled out a tote box.

It was full of all sorts of odds and ends that I had packed away after Harry had been born. Down near the bottom, I found what I was looking for – a stuffed toy green frog. My mother had given it to me when he was born to put in his crib for company. I took it out and went back to Harry's room, and placed it on the night stand beside the bed, so it would be the first thing he saw in the morning. I can't wait to see his reaction! Well, I must get to bed too. It has been a long day, and I am really tired. I wonder if I will dream of being a frog Princess and /or a Queen, or maybe like the fairy tale, have a hunky Prince kiss me and wake me up from a sound sleep, and then live happily ever after.

Lions Club Walk For Dog Guides Wawa Ice Fishing

Derby Donates To The LDHC Foundation

Article by Barb Fisher, photo supplied Eddie excitedly reminded me to update my visual schedule as Sunday morning, May 27 is the much anticipated "Walk for Dog Guides" about to get underway from the Community Center, the day he has been salivating over since this time last year.

Since its debut in 1985, the PetValu Walk for Dog Guides has gained momentum annually as Lions Clubs and members of the community participate and launch Walks each year. Thanks to generous sponsors, 100% of donations raised go directly towards providing Dog Guides to Canadians with disabilities. Held in more than 200 communities and in every province across Canada, the Walks have raised over $10 million, making it the largest fundraiser of its kind in Canada. This allows for Lions Foundation of Canada to carry out its mission to assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them Dog Guides at no cost.

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides train six types of Dog Guides to meet the needs of Canadians with a wide range of disabilities. Breeds commonly used are Labrador and Golden Retrievers, Standard and Miniature Poodles, and some smaller breeds. The training of a Dog Guide is an intensive four to six month period, training one-on-one with a qualified trainer. Once fully trained, the dog is matched with its handler who then spends two to four weeks at the Oakville training school, learning how to handle, trust and bond with their new Dog Guide. The Lions Foundation has recently graduated its 2000th dog guide team; a Seizure Alert dog and his person. There are six programs in which dogs can be trained according to their natural skills and interests:

Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Seizure Alert, Special Skills (medical/wheelchair), Autism Assistance and Diabetes Alert (Diabetics with hypoglycemic unawareness).

The Canadian organization receives no government funding and relies on donations to provide a trained dog. It costs approximately $25,000 to raise and train each Dog Guide, yet they are provided at no cost to clients. Dogs stay with their person until retirement when the dog is adopted, either by extended family or by someone from the long waiting list of people wanting to adopt an older dog from the Lions Foundation.

The top pledges win a prize and if you don't have a dog, borrow Eddie, he won't tattle that he completed the walk several times. And if your pledge wins the coveted bag of dog food prize, Eddie will trade you for a gift card.

On Tuesday, May 15, 2018 the LDHC Foundation board members were on hand to receive a donation from this year’s Wawa Ice Fishing Derby proceeds. The Foundation extends a huge thank you to the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby organization who has annually supported local charities such as the hospital foundation. Thank you Scott Popert for leading this event. To date, the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby has donated over $20,000 to the Foundation to be used to enhance local health care in

Wawa and surrounding area.

The LDHC Foundation Prepares For The Wine Tasting Event

Preparations are underway for this year’s Wine Tasting Event. The theme is Summertime, a season we all look forward to celebrating.

Five summery wines and two kinds of craft beer from a Thunder Bay brewery will be featured. Tasty complementary appetizers will be served with each wine or beer.

Mary Ciuciura has graciously agreed to play instrumental music as attendees sample and socialize.

Last year the event sold out and was a huge success. Mark June 23 on your calendar, get

a group of friends together and plan to attend this wonderful event. Remember to get your tickets early. What better way to usher in the summer season!
