Article & photos by Barb Fisher The Mayor, Council and EDC hosted Wawa's first Environmental Appreciation Day in recognition of all the dedicated work town's folk and groups have accomplished in making Wawa a great, environmentally clean place to live. Mayor Rody was pleased to award the first Energy Committee Recognition Award to someone who has worked diligently to clean up our environment, and no one deserves the award more than Karin Grundt. Karin has been working tirelessly for 25 years in ridding our environment of the

ever appearing garbage persisting in our highway ditches.

Karin accepted her award, but was quick to share it with her band of garbologists who are few in number, but mighty in determination. Karin always does the right thing, never shirking from her quest, freely admitting to being abrupt and pushy, but always ready to get down and dirty leading the pack in the trenches. Congratulation to Karin and her garbologists.

Everyone present celebrated by enjoying the strawberry shortcake and coffee following.

In other projects enriching our environment, through RBC a grant of $45,000.00 has been

received from the 2017 RBC Blue Water Leadership Program which will help to cover some of the costs of the Wawa Lake Rejuvenation project including installation of green storm water filters along the Lake between Ganley Street and Dr. Rose's Beach. The clean water project includes the construction of a series of bio-swales and a wetland to manage untreated storm water currently flowing into Wawa Lake. By using plants and natural materials, the water flowing into the municipal drains that capture rain water and street pollutants will be cleaned before entering our sole source of drinking water.

Shawn Mahon has recently been welcomed to the community and the EDC Team as Wawa Green Project Coordinator funded by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and Shawn has wasted no time in implementing a variety of projects and events aimed at reducing and conserving energy. Another innovative idea, the Yellow Fish Road Program is inspiring our youth to take action to prevent pollution from entering storm drains which flow into our lake and rivers. Last week students from our highschools teamed up with members of the EDC, township and youth group Teens in Motion to paint yellow fish symbols, "Rain Only" beside storm drains that lead into Wawa Lake. Street pollution

such as soaps, fertilizers, oils, cigarette butts and pet waste enter the storm drains that lead into Wawa Lake untreated.

The Yellow Fish symbol reminds residents that storm drains are for rainwater only, and the students also distributed yellow fish hangers on doors of local homes.

After their painting project was complete, the kids were treated to pizza and refreshments.

Wawa's Green Project Environmentalists Recognized

REVIEW Review of Proposed Operations: Information Centre White River Forest 2018-2028 Forest Management Plan The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), White River Forest Products Ltd. (WRFP) and the White River Local Citizen Committee (WRLCC) invite you to an information centre. This information centre is being held as part of the detailed planning of operations for the first five-year term of the 2018–2028 Forest Management Plan (FMP) for the White River Forest.

The Planning Process The FMP takes approximately two years to complete. During this time, five formal opportunities for public and Indigenous involvement are provided.

The second opportunity (Stage 2) for this FMP occurred on January 25, 2017 when the public was invited to review and comment on the long term management direction. This ‘Stage 3’ notice is: • To invite you to review and comment on – the details of access, harvest, renewal and tending operations for the first five-year term; – the proposed primary and branch road corridors and the proposed harvest areas for the second five-year term of the plan; and • To request contributions to the background information to be used in planning.

How to Get Involved To facilitate your review, an information centre will be held at the Senior’s Harmony Club located at 309 Spruce St., White River, Ontario, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on June 21, 2017.

The following information may be obtained at the information centre: • Summary of the MNRF Regional Director endorsed long-term management direction; and • Summary maps of: – the planned areas for harvest, renewal and tending operations for the first five-year term of the plan; – the proposed harvest areas for the second five-year term of the plan; and – the proposed corridors for new primary and branch roads for the ten-year period of the plan.

In addition to the most current versions of the information and maps, which were available at Stages 1 and 2 of the public consultation process, the following information will be available at the information centre: • Summary of public and Indigenous consultation to date including responses; and • The list of required modifications resulting from the public review of the long-term management direction.

The detailed proposed operations will be available for review and comment at the White River Forest Products Ltd. and Jackfish River Management Inc. offices in White River and Hornepayne and at the MNRF Wawa District Office at the locations shown below during normal office hours by appointment for a period of 60 days (June 21, 2017 to August 21, 2017). Comments on the proposed operations for the White River Forest must be received by Zachary White of the planning team at the MNRF Wawa District Office, by August 21, 2017.

Meetings with representatives of the planning team and the LCC can be requested at any time during the planning process. Reasonable opportunities to meet planning team members during non-business hours will be provided upon request. ...Continued from front page For several months now the EDC has been promoting the use of rain barrels in a great strategy of saving money and conserving water. Several weeks ago after ongoing advertisement, prepaid orders were taken to purchase such a great addition to one's conservation efforts. The barrels hold 220 litres of water and comes complete with a leaf and mosquito filter basket, spigot/tap, and an overflow hose; a bargain at $45.00. Orders and pick-up of the barrels exceeded expectation with about 115 barrels purchased and distributed.

In keeping with the Green Project initiatives, a Composting Workshop was held recently to demonstrate how you can reduce your trash output and generate a free, rich soil conditioner. Guest speaker Don McGorman from Clean North was joined with Ivan Besner and Nancy Donald who offered everything you needed to know about outside and inside composting of food scraps, gardening clippings and organic material to reduce the amount of trash going into our landfill. In the composting process microorganisms that you can't see such as bacteria and fungi, and macroorganisms you can see, earth worms and other insects consume and break down the waste material.

The carbon dioxide released in a backyard compost is significantly less harmful to the environment than the methane produced by organics in a landfill, and when the compost is spread on the garden, your flowers and veggies will thank you for it. Indoor composting using worms is easy to maintain, odour free, takes up very little space, and can be carried out all year long without the inconvenience of going outside. The composting process is done by red worms which eat one-half their body weight in food waste organisms every day. Worms do not eat the vegetable matter but feed on the bacteria that breaks down the matter. It was a very educating evening that everyone can take part in and feel satisfaction of doing their part to save our planet.

Michipicoten Chronicles

Michipicoten Ojibway The Michipicoten Ojibway have a long history on the eastern shore of Lake Superior and Wawa area. Michipicoten is an Ojibway word which some say translates to “landing place” or “place of large hills”.

At the time of first contact with European explorers in the early 1600’s, the local Ojibway were proficient hunters, fishermen and gatherers. They followed the annual migrations of birds, mammals and fish. Their diets depended heavily on sturgeon, whitefish, rabbits and the seasonal roots and berries that could be gathered during the short growing seasons. They tapped birch and maple trees for sap to make sugar and used fire to promote the growth of blueberry harvests.

The medicinal uses of plants and herbs were passed down through the generations. The medicine men and women played an important role in the everyday health of the Ojibway tribe as well as providing cures and healing aides when injury or sickness occurred.

The junction of the Magpie and Michipicoten Rivers was an important settlement site for the ancestors of the Michipicoten First Nation.

The rivers were not only a spawning grounds for a variety of fish species, they were also important natural transportation routes. The 40 some families who made up the Michipicoten Ojibway, travelled and traded with their neighboring families and tribes east towards Chapleau and north into Cree territory up the Michipicoten,

Missinaibi and Moose Rivers to James Bay. This transportation route became the basis for the European fur trading industry at Michipicoten Post which lasted nearly 200 years.

Many of Canada’s early European explorers, missionaries, and adventurers travelled through Michipicoten and interacted with the Michipicoten Ojibway.

Journals and diary entries frequently describe the native residents as honest, friendly and hard-working. The Ojibway trappers and woodsmen were sought after as skilled and reliable guides. Some historians believe that they guided the first European explorers Radisson and Groseillers up the Michipicoten-MissinaibiMoose River system to James Bay from Lake Superior in the late 1600’s.

A long portage from Sandy Beach to Wawa Lake, which avoided the fast flowing lower Michipicoten River, was shared by the local Ojibway when Philip Turnor surveyed local routes from Superior to James Bay in 1791.

In 1850, the Michipicoten Chief Totomenai was one of eight Ojibway Chiefs representing the tribes along Lake Superior’s northern coastline, who signed the Robinson Superior Treaty with Queen Victoria’s representative William Robinson.

This established the Gros Cap Indian Reserve #49.

Today the Michipicoten First Nation continues to be a vibrant part of the community of Wawa and represent a long and colourful part of our Northern Ontario culture.

Les élèves de l’ÉSC Trillium participent à un projet intergénérationnel fort apprécié Les élèves de l’école secondaire catholique Trillium (Chapleau), sous la direction de leur enseignante Mme Pamela Morin, ont eu la chance de contribué à la relance du programme "Congregate Dining," un service qui offre un diner ou un souper aux personnes de 65 ans et plus de la communauté.

Depuis quelques années, ce programme n’était plus offert en raison d’un manque de bénévoles.

After cleaning Highway 17 south to the Soo, we took a little break from the freezing, merciless wind. I could feel the chill for days. This gave me time to count beer cans, organize and reflect.

Drinking and driving is sadly still in full swing.

On that short stretch of Highway 17, from Tim Hortons to the Michipicoten River Bridge (approximately 7 kilometres), we picked up 3 cases of beer and liquor bottles, 280 cans (Bud, Blue, Palm Breeze, etc…), $35 in deposits. A sobering statistic!

On the lighter side: I have sometimes nightmares.

Dear Austin, whoever you are? Didn’t your mother teach you to not litter?

Come and give us a hand and help us clean up after litterbugs like you – it is not a nice job, it is exhausting, crawling up and down embankments, over rocks and slippery grass, getting scratched by bushes and stumbling over stumps, just to get that red cup, cigarette pack or glittering chip bag. And it is not only very physical work, but it is also very demeaning to pick up somebody else’s mess, not to mention a waste of precious time and energy.

So to all the Austin’s out Drinking and driving is sadly still in full swing. there, ‘Think before you toss!’

A Frog's Bedtime Story Bedtime fairy tales are supposed to be nice cute stories that will help your child go to sleep.

These are also beloved stories that parents remember from when they were children. Disney has made lots of them into movies. I am in a foul mood tonight as I put my six-year old son Harry to bed. He has been acting up all day, and I know that reading a story with a violent ending is not going to help him to settle down, but I am going ahead with it anyway. I found this story on the internet, and printed it off.

It is loosely based on the fairy tale 'Sleeping Beauty', only with a novel twist, and of course a decidedly morbid ending. This is what I read to my son: “I remember a night a long time ago when I was just a young frog, that Mummie read me this bedtime story.

I got settled down among the lily pads while she got the book out, and opened it to the first page. She began: 'Once upon a time in the land of Frognatia, there was a giant bullfrog who ruled the swamp along Frogwater Lake. He was called King William. After several years of his and Queen Kate's reign, an heir was assured. When he was born, there was a celebration throughout the nation. He was named Prince George.

Well, everyone was happy with this news, except Charles, the King's younger brother. He had been next in line, and was now bumped to #3. King William had decreed that he would abdicate the throne once his son turned 10 frog years old. Over the years Charles bided his time, planning when and how to get the Prince out of the way. Then one day just before his 5th birthday, Charles met an old Bullfrog, Merline, who was renowned as a magician and weaver of spells.

After a clandestine meeting one evening in early May, a deal was struck that Merline would prepare a spell for the Prince to be used at a later time. After sipping a potion that he would prepare, he would go into a deep sleep.

This secret spell could only be broken by a human Princess kissing him on the lips and uttering the phrase 'My Handsome Prince'. As he would not be conscious by the time of his 10th birthday – indeed what were the odds of a human Princess coming here to Frognatia, therefore King William would have to relinquish all rights to the throne, as he had willingly declared back then, and since the Prince was not 'available', the throne would be his. At his 7th birthday party, the time came when Charles was able to drop the potion into the Prince's goblet of lily pad wine. This was the first time he had been allowed to have wine. Merline was hiding behind curtains in the ball room where the party was being held, and uttered the incantation to make the spell take effect. It took about ten minutes to kick in. Prince George complained about being very tired, and wanted to go to bed.

But before he could get up, his

head dropped onto the table, and he fell into that deep sleep that Merline had created. King William suggested it must be the wine that knocked him out.

He summoned his mother, who carried him up to his room. The next morning they could not get the Prince to wake up. Doctors were called, who had no answer for this. Merline was called and asked to cast a spell to make him wake up. He declared in an innocent tone that he didn't have anything that could counter what was obviously just a sleeping disorder. He assured the King and Queen that he would wake up only when he was ready. Their despair was obvious to all those in the court.

Word of this mysterious illness spread to the rest of the country.

Over the years everyone could notice the despondency of the king. Each year he seemed more frail. Charles was delighted, and wondered if the king might die before the Prince's 10th birthday, and make his ascension to the throne come even sooner. But he was a patient frog.

However, the King held on, and plans began to take shape for George to take over the throne after his 9th birthday, on the hope that he would wake up in time. That included approaching Charles and making contingency plans for him to ascend to the throne if Prince George did not wake up. Charles expressed his concern and hope that George would recover in time, and was grateful for the King's consideration for making him part of the plans. Once alone, however, he croaked in delight at his older brother's kind nature.

It will make his takeover of the throne so much easier, he chuckled to himself.

So Charles and the nation began the countdown. Then on day 364 things fell apart for him.

It began in the morning of May 10th, one day before the Prince's birthday. A group of canoeists paddling up the lake pulled onto the shore. A group of the inhabitants called out a welcome. The paddlers were puzzled where the talking was coming from, until one of them looked down into the weeds. The bravest frog of the group went on, “Welcome to our land. I am Tommy Tadpole.

We have never seen anyone so big before. Are you what they call a 'human'?” The lone woman spoke up, "Why yes I am. Let me introduce myself.

I am Princess Charlotte from a country far away called Great Britain. I am on a tour of your country. I love your wilderness and wetlands, and canoeing is a passion of mine. I and my party just wanted to pull up to have a bit of lunch and a rest, before we continue on. May we have permission to stay here for a little while?" Tommy was all excited, and when he got that way, he always began to stutter. He finally spit out what he wanted to say. 'I can't speak for the King, but I am sure he will welcome you with open arms. Let me hop off and get him for you. A real

princess, you say. My, my! I'll be back in a hop, skip and a jump.'

He disappeared, leaving the others to meet and talk to each other. Tommy was out of breath by the time he got to the palace.

He had a hard time getting in to see the King. But with his pleading and excited tone, the guards finally let him in to the court where the King was holding a session. He knelt before the King, and blurted out about a human Princess being here, and told him that she could be the one to wake Prince George from his sleep, and thus save the Kingdom. He then explained about the spell that he saw Merline cast on the Prince back then on his 7th birthday party.

Tommy was the only other frog who knew about the secret spell Merline had put on the Prince, as he had also been hiding behind the curtains on the opposite side of the room from where Merline had been standing and casting his spell. Tommy and no one wanted Charles to be king, so any help this Princess could supply would be welcome Tommy bravely blurted out. It would certainly be a miracle if she succeeded in waking him up again after all these years, but worth trying, he pleaded to the King. So Tommy finally found this right time to tell the King about this spell. Fortunately for Tommy and the rest of them in the room, Merline was not there to refute this claim. The King was stunned, of course, but had no time to think about it.

He quickly hopped over to his bedroom, and put on his regal outfit, which was a lime green tunic, with a yellow frog emblazoned on the chest, and dark green pants. He could not find his crown, and gave up on it, as he rushed out of the palace and over to meet the Princess.

He quickly went through the protocol, and got down to the critical part of the occasion. He explained about the spell that his brother had put on his son.

He held his breath while he waited for her to respond as to whether she would agree to kiss a frog. She uttered some words to her other canoeists to the effect that it was disgusting. They chattered back and forth for a bit. The King waited impatiently while they discussed it. She finally turned to him, and to his relief, agreed to do it. So everyone headed back to the palace. The Prince was brought out on his bed, where he had been lying for the past 3 years. The bed was laid on a flat rock, just outside of the palace doors. Princess Charlotte got down on all fours and leaned over the sleeping frog Prince.

For some strange reason, she felt an immediate feeling of love towards him. As members of the royal family watched, she reached down and kissed him passionately on the mouth, and uttered the phrase Tommy had told her to say - 'My Handsome Prince'. To everyone's delight, Prince George began to stir from his sleep. In the background an expletive (first letter S, last letter T – oh , you guessed it. Yes, he uttered a 'shoot') erupted.

Everyone turned to see who said it. Everyone smiled when they realized it was Charles. They all began to cheer when they saw the Prince sit up, and look around.

The cheers were partially at the

relief to see the spell broken, but more importantly realizing that Charles would not be King after all. King William declared a week of celebrations, starting with his promised abdication of the throne, and the crowning of the Prince on his birthday the next day, and the marriage of Princess Charlotte and Prince George right after. They kissed once more in a moment of excitement. Unfortunately for her, I guess, or maybe she was okay with what happened next we just don't know – she turned into a beautiful frog. This was one of the side effects of breaking Merline's spell. It was supposed to have worked the other way, when after being kissed, George was supposed to turn into a human Prince. This was a departure from the known fairy tale.”

Mummie paused, and laid down the book. In a somber voice, she declared, “Now you know that fairy tales always have a happy ending. Well, life can be cruel, unlike these stories. I want you to realize it at your young age, so you will have no surprises as you get older. You will not always get your way in this world, and tragedies and disappointments will happen along the way. Are we clear on this, son?” She scared me at this serious tone and message she was giving me. I just nodded, and finally croaked out a yes.

Then she went back to the book, reading from the last page.

“Since it was such a lovely warm sunny day the coronation and wedding was moved outdoors along the shore of Frogwater Lake. Everyone was so intent on watching the ceremonies, that no one noticed Charles standing beside Merline, as he raised his magic staff, swirled it over his head, did an incantation, and created a horde of snakes. They slithered in behind the others, and began an orgy of 'frog legs', and other body parts, as the King, Queen, and Prince were all devoured first, followed by some of the other court members, and other citizens who could not escape the commotion.

Princess Charlotte was terrified of snakes, and hopped into the castle and got herself safely locked in her room, and thus saved from being devoured by these serpents. The snakes eventually slithered away back into the swamp from whence they had been conjured from. Charles yelled at the top of his lungs that everyone should remain calm, while he was installed as the next King of Frognatia. His first act was to have Princess Charlotte to come out of her room, where she was forced by royal decree to become his wife and thus Queen.

No one raised any objections openly, but everyone there got a feeling of dread as a reign of terror began, with Merline at his side to protect him, and keep his citizens in line.

It was not long after that the royal court announced the birth of a Prince, who was named Harry. Two years later another son was born, who was named Philip, and then in the next year a Princess was born, who was named Elizabeth.

This reign lasted for many years, until his oldest son, Prince Harry ascended to the throne after his father's untimely death

He tried to be independent from Merline, and was to some extent. He ordered Merline to conduct a survey of the country, to gauge how things were going, and assess the peoples' feelings towards him and his reign. That left him alone to pursue his own agenda, which was less dictatorial. His popularity increased measurably as time went on.

Unfortunately, the entire Kingdom was destroyed five years into King George's reign as a dam was built upstream of Frogwater Lake and the swampland that was known as Frognatia was drained, and everyone died from the drought.

So poor Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth never got to reign over the Kingdom. And Merline and his magic and influence died too."

Mummie closed the book, and said it was time to go to sleep. But how could I do that, after that dreadful story. I finally did get to sleep that night, but I have kept the memory of it with me all these years. I have not met my 'Princess' yet, but I do have Miss Piggy! She is enough of a handful for me. And thankfully there is no Merline around to cast spells. But I am constantly watching for snakes to make a meal of me. Life can be so perilous for a frog, as I suppose it can be for 'humans' too, I guess, seeing Queen Charlotte never got to revert to a 'human'.

Oh yes, my name, by the way, is Kermit.”

Despite my greatest fears that I would keep my son, Harry, awake, did not materialize. He asked me if I would make a great King. I assured him that he definitely would. Then he declared he thought so too, and assured me that he would never have let Merline boss him around. Then he was out like a light. Despite my earlier anger with him, I could not help smiling and thinking what a wonderful boy he was becoming. As I got up off his bed and turned out the light, I turned back and watched him for a few seconds as he began his heavy breathing that signaled that he was sound asleep. I vowed to be a more patient parent. Then I had a thought. I sent to my bedroom and pulled out a tote box. It was full of all sorts of odds and ends that I had packed away after Harry had been born.

Down near the bottom, I found what I was looking for – a stuffed toy green frog. My mother had given it to me when he was born to put in his crib for company.

I took it out and went back to Harry's room, and placed it on the night stand beside the bed, so it would be the first thing he saw in the morning. I can't wait to see his reaction! Well, I must get to bed too. It has been a long day, and I am really tired. I wonder if I will dream of being a frog Princess and /or a Queen, or maybe like the fairy tale, have a hunky Prince kiss me and wake me up from a sound sleep, and then live happily ever after .....

(WAWA, ON) - The Victoria Day long Weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year on Ontario's highways. As possible signs of summer time approaching many families are heading out to get their cottages open.

What this means is that there will be many more people using our roads, highways and waterways during the next several days. The Superior East Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be out in force to ensure that safety is on the top of the list for everyone's travel plans. It is also important for all Ontario residents to do their part to ensure that their travel plans go smoothly: - Always be aware of traffic around you as you drive.

While on Ontario's waterways, boaters are also reminded to keep safety in mind on the Victoria Day Long Weekend: - Get your Pleasure Craft Operator's card. This is required for those operating a pleasure craft on Ontario's waterways.

- Know the load capacity of your vessel. It is important to note that the load also includes the passengers on board not just the cargo. Ensure that the load in your vessel is evenly distributed to avoid taking on water or capsizing.

- Ensure your pleasure craft is properly equipped and in good working order. Required items include a floating rope/ tow line, a flashlight, a paddle, bailing bucket, signalling device and lifejackets. A small tool kit,

ahead, behind and from side to side. Check your mirrors every five seconds or so, and check your blind spots by turning your head to look over your shoulder.

- Wear your seat belt and be sure that all passengers in your vehicle are wearing theirs. Studies show that seatbelts will save your life and prevent a more serious injury in a crash.

- Avoid using hand held electronic devices when you are behind the wheel, keep your eyes on the road and your mind on driving. A distracted driver is four times more likely to be involved in a collision.

- Exercise patience and show courtesy to other people using the highway. Aggressive driving is dangerous and places all motorists at risk.

- Be a sober driver. If you plan on consuming alcohol, make arrangements for a designated driver, get a ride, take a cab, or stay over. Impaired driving is a

ATV and Off Road Vehicle operators should also do their part this weekend: - Know your local bylaws pertaining to use of an ATV on municipal streets and roads.

Boots gloves and goggles / glasses should also be a part of your wardrobe for the day.

- Ride within your abilities.

Taking unnecessary chances or driving beyond your skill level dramatically increases your chances of crashing.

- Plan your route and ensure that you tell someone where you will be riding and when you should be back. Bring a cell phone if possible.

- Ride where you are permitted and stay off private property.

- Ride alcohol / drug free.

- Ensure that there are lifejackets or personal floatation devices (PFD) for everyone and wear them. Weak swimmers and small children should wear a lifejacket or PFD whenever they are near the water. A lifejacket or PFD will save your life if you wear it.

- Operate your vessel according to the conditions. Rough and windy conditions may mean taking two trips from the landing and may also make the trip take longer be a wise operator.

- Be a sober boater. Never venture out onto the water while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. While travelling to your destination, ensure that liquor is stored properly and is not readily available. Open liquor is only permitted on a vessel that is moored and has a washroom, cooking and sleeping facilities. A pontoon boat does not meet this requirement.
