THURSDAY Barb Sutherland - 3 Year Service Award Isabel Nelson - 10 Year Service Award Article & photos by Barb Fisher   The 16th Annual Canadian Red Cross Volunteer Awards dinner honoured once again the amazing volunteers who help shape our community's reputation as a great little town. Darlene Trovarello, Community Services Co-ordinator opened the celebration by thanking all volunteers who provide services in North Algoma. A review of the many accomplishments and changes over the year followed with Trovarello outlining the Canadian Red Cross Seven Fundamental Principles, a guide that unites volunteers across 183 countries of the world. Diane Lajambe, District Branch

Manager added her congratulations and noted that Wawa is her favourite community to visit - so much enthusiasm given by the impressive numbers drawn from such a small town.   Trovarello, in her Year in Review noted, "Disaster Services in Wawa is recognized for its excelllent work assisting the municipality in Registration & Enquiry as well as providing Personal Services to evacuees for the past several years." Mayor Ron Rody thanked everyone involved in again assisting the 100 or so Kashechewan residents who recently again called Wawa their home away from home as the annual flooding in their community necessitat-

ed alternate temporary living arrangements.   Meals on Wheels is now 16 years old. The program has 15 volunteers who just this past year delivered over 2,000 meals in Wawa and White River. The Transportation Program is 11 years old and fills the needs of the frail elderly by providing rides for in-town and out-of-town medical appointments. The Home Maintenance Program cleared over a thousand driveways this winter. The Friendly Visiting Program has logged many hours visiting the elderly and Telephone Assurance volunteers provided a welcoming service in giving our vulnerable seniors peace of mind.   The Assisted Living Program celebrated the graduation of two students Jessica Asaame and Tara Coles. These ladies will join the Assisted Living team to assist high risk seniors who wish to remain in their homes.   After a delicious dinner prepared by the incomparable Judy Moore, the awards for service got under way. Three year milestone certificates and pins were awarded to Dan Bruno and Barb Sutherland, five year milestone certificate and pin to Lorna Chiupka, and ten year milestone certificates and pins to Isabel Nelson, Dalyce Rutland-Rousseau and Rod Spreng. Your heartfelt dedication is commendable and very much appreciated.

Door prizes were drawn for beautifully potted hydrangea plants, a box of chocolates was presented to every volunteer, and each table's centrepiece plant went to the person with the birthday closest to the evening's date. This caused a little controversy at my table as two people were potential winners when counting backward as well as forward. But true to the good nature of all us volunteers, it was amiably sorted out without incident!   Much thanks also went to JJAM FM, Algoma News Review, Wawa-News.com, River City Cafe - White River, and Lady Dunn Health Centre for their support and fundraising efforts throughout the year. With our aging population the need for services that the Red Cross provides will be increasing exponentially in the coming years. Please consider volunteering your time; qualifications are non-threatening and the self-satisfaction in helping people in need is empowering.
