By-Hand Festival Springs Into Spring

Article & photos by Barb Fisher   Covering community events for publication is the best job ever, and this past weekend I enjoyed another amazing display of our home-grown talent. It took me a couple of visits to absorb all the displayed items for me to pass on a description to my readers...you really had to be there. My take home experience covers only a fraction of the varied and amazing talent that we have in our and neighbouring communities.   Rachel Presse - Rachel's Weaving. This is the second year that Rachel from Chapleau has expressed her unique talent in displaying beautiful and snuggly blankets and tea towels woven by herself using looms. She has 12 looms, in different sizes to produce varied sizes of towels and blankets. She described the process which takes considerable time for each item; two weeks to produce a double blanket for example. She has been in the weaving business for about five years and has a store area located downstairs in the Chapleau Post Office where people can browse and purchase items. She also provides lessons in weaving to the school grades 4, 5 and 6. What a great opportunity to learn this skill.

Christina Bekintis - Fire Wolf Creations native art. Christina is a self-taught artist who finds passion in bringing her inspirations, love and spirituality to life through her artwork. She first displayed her art in 2012 and now branches off showcasing her talent at other venues. Christina and her mom, Adrienne Surace answered questions on the artwork displayed: designs created on clothing and drums, prints, cards, bookmarks and acrylics on canvas. I was intrigued by the display of henna tattoos whereby ink derived from a certain plant can be applied to the skin. It is considered a semi permanent application lasting a week or two. Designs can be applied by freehand or picked from a book of designs. Christina is passionate in sharing her talents with the younger generation and holds painting workshops for kids of all ages to develop their artistic talents.   Allyson Fortin and daughter Haley - A and H Hobbies. They have been in business for 10 years and have exhibited their wares at By-Hand twice before. Their display was wide and varied and beside jewelry and sewn items, there were many intriguing items I had not see before, such as

hair bands that can be used to create many unique fashion statements, small-sized hunter orange vests, difficult to come by for children, glass candy and silica socks. The socks immediately tweaked my interest, being gramma to a hockey player and making the ultimate faux pas of opening his hockey bag without warning, well hockey parents, you now can toss in one of Allyson's Silica Socks; it will pull the moisture from the clothing and equipment helping to keep bacteria and odors at bay. Other uses for the Silica Sock include reversing water damage to electronic devices, photographs, documents, window moisture, window fogging, and preventing metal rusting and silver tarnishing, just to mention a few.   Sam Dawyd - scroll work. Quietly sharing Allyson's exhibit table, her dad Sam also had a great display of his own talents. Before him stretched an amazing array of pens, knives and kaleidoscopes all fashioned by Sam using his scroll saw or lathe. He is one of the orginal presenters at By-Hand and got started some 40 years ago when his wife bought him a scroll saw, his talent evolving from that time. I was fascinated by the intricate animal shapes delicately cut from wood and antler fragments. Larger antlers featured cutout portions depicting animal heads and birds, but what I found most fascinating was his pens and knife handles of wood and bone shaped to perfection on his lathe.   Frank McRae - featured his woodworking genius; wide variety of wallhangings depicting wildlife scenes, and machine replicas cut from wood pieces employing an ancient art technique called Intarsia. It is an elaborate form of marquetry whereby different patterns of wood are inlaid in one another and fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. I'm thinking that Frank has much patience in turning out his beautiful finished products.   Raymond MacDonnell author. Raymond writes kids' books that appeal to all ages with his Wawa Goose characters bringing to life various locations that Wawa residents will remember and relish and spots that visitors can discover. Raymond has self-published three children's books: "Wawa Goose-Meeting at Fort Friendship", Maggie Doodle Loony Loons & Crazy Critters", "In the Heart of Canada-the Story of Wawa". Although they

are written for grade 6 and higher reading level, children of all ages will enjoy reading the humorous antics of characters we can all relate to in our beautiful unique town. Raymond is currently working on his next books.   Judy Page - baking. Judy works seasonally at Naturally Superior Adventures doing what she does superbly, keeping everyone overeating her wonderful concoctions. In the tourist off season she runs her own catering business, and who in town can say they have never mowed down on one of her delicious meals.   Maria Reid - sewing. Maria first exhibited her handiwork at the By-Hand Festival in 1990 and has evolved into chief Co-ordinator since 1992. She is quick to share the success of the Festival with her co-Coordinator Jim Sanders who unfortunately could not attend

this years show. She exhibited a wide arrange of sewn items: pillows, aprons, tea towels, bibs, hot pads, place mats and cloth picture books. She attributes her sewing evolvement to add a feminine touch in her life of raising sons.   Laura Mitchell - jewelry, Blue Canoe Creations. Laura has showcased her line of jewelry at the Festival for the past eight years. She specializes in jewelry of all description, giving particular note of her nature inspired line of pieces using wood, agates, turquoise, jasper and other gemstones. Laura also carries a line of teething products made from food grade silicone, including necklaces for mothers, teething toys, soother clips and carrier rings. Continued on page 2...
