Quietly sharing Allyson's exhibit table, her dad Sam also had a great display showcasing his own talents. Before him stretched an amazing array of pens, knives made with antler handles, plaques and wallhangings all worked by Sam using his very fine scroll saw and lathe.

Sam is one of the foundling father of the By-Hand Festival and got started in his craft over 40 years ago when his wife bought him a scroll saw, and the rest is history.

Frank McRae - featured his woodworking genius with a wide variety of wallhangings depicting wildlife scenes, machine replicas with intricate moving parts, and plaques designed from wood pieces cut and fitted together employing an ancient art technique called Intarsia. It is an elaborate form of marquetry whereby different

patterns of wood are inlaid in one another to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. Frank added a few more pieces to this year's collection, a ladder firetruck and pumper, all with movable working parts. His final products are amazing.

Maria Reid - sewing. Maria is a long time presenter at the festival exhibiting a wide range of sewn items. For all your festive, or every day table wear, move over Martha Stewart, Maria has it all.

Superior Creations by Tammy Dumoulin-Asselin adds something new every year to her line of painted wood and canvas signs, and vinyl decals embossed on wine glasses, water bottles and mugs. A gift that even the most difficult Mother-in-Law on your list would enjoy.

Flood Mud Pottery - Jim Sanders has been a well known potter in our area for many years and keeps churning out more variations in his fine pieces using clays from the Lake Superior shores. Recently, Jim has begun a new style of pottery for him, Lake Superior Tiles inspired by the various views of Lake Superior's shoreline. Make sure you check out his masterpieces, each is one of a kind and with a vast array to choose from you will not leave disappointed.

By-Hand Festival - Gifts For Mom On Her Day

Article & photos by Barb Fisher Covering community events for publication is the best job ever, and this past weekend I enjoyed another amazing display of our home-grown talent.

It took me a couple of visits to absorb all the displayed items for me to pass on a description to my readers....you really had to be there. My take home experience covers only a fraction of the varied and amazing talent that we have in our and neighbouring communities. One of a kind gifts just in time for Mother's Day were on display and the room was buzzing with excitement.

Rachel's Weaving. Rachel Presse, from Chapleau has been a regular presenter for the past few years and with a keen eye for mixing colour tones, her beautifully loomed blankets and tea towels have been hand woven with love and much skill.

In keeping with the ever important recycling mode we all must get on board with, Rachel drew my attention to the Catalongne blankets; made entirely from recycled sheets. Who would have known - beautiful.

By-Hand Festival Gifts For Mom On Her Day

... Article Continued From Front Page Mir-made Baby Apparel - Another first time presenter, Mirinda Patterson uses her wiles and sewing talent from her catchy name to one-of-a kind sewn apparel for babies who, thanks to them, got you eligible for this special day.

Mirinda is donating a portion of her sales to Camp Oochigeas, a volunteer-based summer camp in Muskoka where kids with, and affected by childhood cancer, their siblings and their families can enjoy a carefree interval in our beautiful wilds of Ontario. Carole Bouffard with her children Marguerite and Simon shared Mirinda's space to bring attention to this wonderful fundraiser. The Bouffard family lost their beautiful daughter Alexie to cancer some years ago and every year her siblings Marguerite and Simon look forward to joining in with many friends to stay at Camp Oochigeas in honour of their sister, Alexie.

Lions Club - Nancy Donald was again promoting the Lions Club and all the wonderful things they do for our community. The "Walk for Dog Guides", a fundraiser sponsored

by Pet Valu is coming up soon, Sunday May 27, and I will be reminding you all in the newspaper soon. So get out with Fido and raise some serious dollars for this worthwhile cause.

Nancy was also taking orders for carnations to be delivered to your favourite mom on her special day. So Trudy, there you have it - take Eddie for a run on Mother's Day so I can sit back and smell my carnations!

To sum up my experience covering this By-Hand Festival - AWESOME. Thanks again to Maria Reid, chief Co-ordinator of the Festival and all organizers, volunteers and talented exhibitors in supporting another great event combining excellence in talent with entrepreneurship.

GreenOn - Small And Medium Businesses – Free Energy Assessment

NEW PROGRAM - No cost energy reviews and funding opportunities for energy saving measures The GreenON Small and Medium Businesses program is working to increase the competitiveness and sustainability of Ontario’s small- and mediumsized companies, while increasing awareness and understanding of greenhouse gas pollution management strategies. The projects will help Ontario meet its 2020 and 2030 greenhouse gas pollution reduction targets outlined in Ontario’s Climate Change Action Plan.

The program is open to: • Ontario based businesses with 500 or fewer employees working in Ontario.

• Manufacturers, restaurants, retail, offices, multifamily buildings etc. would all be candidates for an assessment.

Eligible companies can have one or multiple work locations in Ontario. Funding for assess-

ments are limited.

A presentation by Jennifer Tidmarsh, Projects Developer of NextBridge Infrastructure opened the meeting continuing the discussion on their plans to develop a 450 km power transmission line along the north shore of Lake Superior connecting the Lakehead Transformer Station just east of Thunder Bay to the Wawa transformer station. NextBridge has invested considerable time and funds developing this project and is relying on the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to provide approval for their company to move ahead in the construction of the project in July of this year.

Jennifer made it clear that NextBridge is 100% committed to the project and plan to have shovels in the ground beginning this November in order to meet their 2020 inservice target dependent on their final plans getting the green light from the OEB. Mayor Rody very proudly displayed the Certificate of Recognition award presented in March by the Minister of Seniors Affairs to Wawa's EDC at the 2018 Ontario Age-Friendly Symposium in Toronto. The award congratulated the Municipality of Wawa for completing a Wawa Age-Friendly Needs Assessment and Action Plan.

Council directed staff to apply for a grant from the

Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Municipal Asset Management Program for the Building on Top of Existing Processes - Increasing Asset Management Planning Capabilities to establish processes for the 25 year asset performance and expenditure planning. The Municipality commits the lesser of $12,500 or 20% from its budget toward the total costs of this initiative.

Nurses are a key component of the health-care system and play an important role in people's lives by their keen judgement, compassion and clinical expertise.

Maintaining a cost-effective, compassionate health-care system depends on ensuring that nurses continue to play a central role in healthcare in the community. To recognize all that nurses do, Council proclaims May 7-13, 2018 to be Nursing Week and approved the donation of 50 Goose Pins to the Lady Dunn Health centre in recognition of "Nursing Week".

Council approved the list of accounts for the month of April in a total amount of $1,174,802.44.

Council approved the write-off of $23,133.71 taxes owing on property Plan M-131, Lot 1107, Parcel 107, Michipicoten Roll 57-76-000002-13600-0000 and declared the property as surplus.

The nomination of Chris Wray to the 2018-2020 Association of Municipalities of Ontario Board of Directors, Rural Caucus was endorsed

by Council. Mayor Rody added that due to his hard work and expertise in many areas, Chris is very deserving of this nomination.

Council approved the appointment of the following members to the Michipicoten Non-Profit Housing Corporation Board of Directors: Micheline Hatfield, Noella Depew, Doug Woods, Yvan Besner, Ron Rody, Debbie Lessard, Gail V. Smith and Jayne Griffin.

The communities of Marathon, Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Manitouwadge and Wawa began evaluating opportunities in 2015 for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) in the region. LNG will provide a cost effective solution to reducing energy costs and thereby contribute to economic development and reducing costs for rate payers.

The Municipality of Wawa and the other partner communities entered into a Franchise Precedent Agreement with Northeast Midstream, LP to distribute, store and transmit gas in Wawa. The partner communities and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) provided funding to study the feasibility and other aspects of the proposed project.

Council resolved that the Municipality of Wawa support the Stage 2 application by the Town of Marathon to the NOHFC for the Advancing Northwestern Economic

Development through Energy Competitiveness project, Phase II which includes completing the front-end engineering and design, obtaining all governmental, regulatory, and other third-party approvals, consents, orders and authorizations required to construct and operate the local distribution facilities and to deliver LNG to customers. A financial contribution of $100,000 from the Municipality of Wawa will be put towards the project costs contingent upon equal financial support from the other four municipalities listed for a total of $500,000, 90% financial support from the NOHF and confirmation of construction of a LNG plant in the Nipigon area.

Council authorized the owner of John's Valu-Mart to permit the installation of a portable greenhouse/garden centre structure on its side parking lot wherein bedding plants soils and fertilizers would be sold for the period May 9th to July 16th.

Bylaws given three readings and passed: -3110-18 - to confirm the proceedings of Council at its meeting held May 1st.

-3111-18 - to authorize the Municipality to enter into an agreement with the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development for funding assistance for the provision of programs, services and activities as required by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

-3112-18 - to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Townships of Dubreuilville, White River and Hornepayne to provide the services of an Asset Management Coordinator.

-3113-18 - to authorize the delegation of authority to the Chief Administrative Officer for certain acts during a "Lame Duck" Period.

-3114-18 - to authorize the sale of Municipal Land located at 67 Third Ave, Roll No. 5776-000-002-13600-0000 to Brian Hugh Harbord.

Les élèves ont eu l'occasin de faire une peinture collective, leur permettant de découvrir les étapes d'un processus de création. C'était beau de voir l'émerveillement dans leurs yeux. Par la suite, ces derniers ont été en mesure d'exprimer leurs émotions face à cette expérience.

Sans aucun doute, M. Charbonneau est un artiste aux multiples talents; il peint, il écrit des poèmes et il compose des chansons qu'il interprète en s'accompagnant à la guitare. D'ailleurs, c'est en interprétant deux belles chansons accompagné de notre étudiante stagiaire de l'université Laurentienne madame Sabrina Lévesque que la visite a pris fin.

Cette présentation a suscité de nombreuses questions de la part des élèves, tout en

leur permettant de découvrir qu'ils ont tous une imagination incroyable. Il ne s’agit que de la développer.

Je tiens à remercier M. Don Charbonneau, car, il a su transmettre sa passion pour les arts aux élèves, à tel point que plusieurs ont manifesté le désir de poursuivre leurs démarches artistiques.

A Mother's Day Mystery Solved

Mother's Day for May Flowers in 1958 was a memorable one.

Four days before Mother's Day, a chain of mysteries occurred leading up to that day.

On the Thursday morning she received an envelope in the mail. It was pretty beat up, and wrinkled too, as if it had been out in the rain. It had first been sent to her old address in Carnationville. That was about 100 km away from where she lived in Candytown now with her husband and daughter. She hadn't lived there for over a year since her divorce from her first husband, Vernon Tulippe.

She was surprised that he had the decency to forward it to her. It had been an acrimonious divorce. He was abusive, and he had an affair with her current husband. So there was lots of fault to go around. He had been able to keep the house. She move away and started a new life. But she was able to get full custody of their four-year old daughter, Rose. That was her main concern, so she gladly gave up the child support from him.

Then she thought, “I bet his new bimbo girlfriend must have forwarded it. I know he never would have done it, even with the notation about it being 'Private & Confidential'. Maybe she isn't so bad after all.” There was no return address, and the postage mark was so smeared that she could not tell where it had been mailed from, or when.

She looked at it nervously, then put it down on the kitchen counter, while she made lunch for her and Rosie, now seven years old. Rosie was the pet name for her daughter. But curiosity got the better of her. While she was waiting for Rosie to come home she opened it up, and took out the piece of yellow notepad paper. She unfolded it, and read the note. It had just these few words: 'Expect a surprise on Mother's Day. Please stay around to find out what!'

She re-read it, and turned it over, hoping to find some clue what it all meant. But there was nothing to help her out. She mulled over the message. Then she picked up the envelope again, and suddenly realized that this 'surprise' would be delivered to her old address, and either that 'bimbo' or Vernon would find out about it, instead of her.

However, before she could do anything about it, that Thursday afternoon she received a mysterious phone call. “Hello, is this May?” She replied that it was. A woman's soft melodic voice continued. “I believe you received a special letter earlier today, which was forwarded from your old address. Is this correct?”

May hesitated, wondering what this was leading up to. But she replied that she had received it. The caller then asked, “I just want to confirm your address as 2018 Motherhood Drive.” May was beginning to wonder if this was some crank call. Sensing her hesitancy, the caller tried to reassure her. “Really, this is an honest call. We have a delivery for you, and my client has specified that it be delivered on Sunday at exactly

10:00 a.m. We just want to make sure that you will be at home to receive it. Will you be?” May hesitantly said she would be.

The caller concluded the conversation: “So, that's settled. I hope that you will have a very Happy Mother's Day. Good bye.”

She hung up before May could ask any other questions.

When Martin, her now husband, came home that evening, she told him about the letter and phone call. She asked him if he knew anything about it. He was a practical joker, which was one of the things she loved about him.

He always kept her laughing and amused and off-guard. She just never knew what he was going to do or say next. She wanted to know for sure if this was something he was planning for their first Mother's Day together. He told her no, but that was a good idea. He concluded that he must come up with something. She tried to discourage him from doing something crazy, considering this other thing was going to happen. “Just buy me some chocolates, and maybe a bouquet of carnations. Nancy down the street is selling them on behalf of the Lion's Club. That's all I need.

Please, no grand schemes.” He replied with a mischievous smile that he wouldn't. She was getting to know him well enough to realize that now that she had planted a seed in his brain, he would cook something up, despite her pleas. She waited anxiously for Sunday to arrive. However, she had to endure a couple more mysterious occurrences first.

On Friday morning after Martin had gone to work and Rosie was at school, she went out to get groceries for the weekend, go to the bank, and get her hair done. She wanted it to look nice for Mother's Day. When she got back there was a large suitcase sitting by the front door. There was a note attached to the handle that read: 'Please bring inside.

Do not try to open it. This will all be explained on Sunday. Hope u are looking forward to Mother's Day, and your surprise.' It was signed by just the initial 'S'. She was puzzled and curious both.

She unlocked the front door and took her groceries inside before coming back out to the porch to retrieve the suitcase. It was heavy and it took all her strength to get it hauled inside. She finally got it dragged into the living room, and left it in front of the book case next to the front window. It was a tan coloured suitcase with lots of scuff marks on it, which she concluded came from lots of traveling over the years. Despite knowing it, she tried the two locks anyway. Indeed they were locked alright.

She was interrupted from checking it out further by a phone call. It was the school nurse, calling to advise her that her daughter was coming down with the flu, and asking her to come and pick her up.

She went into Mom panic mode.

She assured she would be there right away. She left the groceries on the kitchen counter, totally forgetting that they were there. All she could think about

was Rosie. She headed out, and picked her up. She was looking pale, and definitely looked sick. She thanked the nurse and drove back home. When they got to the front door, she noticed a note taped to the door. She left it there. Her main focus at that moment was her daughter. She got her to bed and comforted her until she fell asleep.

May headed to the kitchen and finally got the groceries put away. By this time it was nearly 1:00 p.m. It was time for her to eat. She made a quick sandwich and nibbled on an apple. As she put the core into the wastebasket, she saw it was full, and time to be taken out to the garage to be put in the garbage can they used for garbage day. On the way back into the house, she noticed the note still stuck on the door. She peeled it off, and went inside. She sat on the sofa and turned on the TV to watch her soap, the Y&R. As there was an ad on at the moment, she turned her attention to the note. It was on the back of a brown envelope.

It read: 'Thanks for bringing in the suitcase. I am sure you would not leave it outside, so thanks again. This is part of the surprise for you on Mother's Day. Please do not try to open it.' Again it was initialed 'S'. She muttered to herself and indirectly to the person who wrote the note that it was too late, as she had already tried to open it. She put it down on the coffee table, and got up and began to clean the house, while checking in on Rosie. In all the commotion that Friday night after Martin came home, she never got around to mentioning about the suitcase. But she did sense an amused look on his face as he followed her around the house, and while they were watching TV after supper.

She knew that he had seen the suitcase in the living room – it was too much in the way to not notice it, she knew. But Martin never asked about it. And that got her curiosity aroused. Why didn't he ask? So they sat there watching TV until it was bedtime. But as they got up off the sofa, she could not stand it any longer. She had to ask: “I got this suitcase today. It was on the porch when I got home from shopping. Do you know anything about it? You have been acting so mysterious tonight. I just wonder.” That was said in a questioning tone. Martin just shrugged his shoulders and said he didn't know anything about it, and was wondering when she was going to ask him about it.

Who was going to blink first, he chuckled, and then laughed as he declared she had. She hit him on the back of his head as he headed out of the living room towards the bedroom. “You!” She was both mad, and amused at the same time. Always keeping her off kilter.

The next mysterious occurrence happened Saturday morning. She was outside, sweeping the porch, while Rosie was sitting in her chair, playing with her doll.

She picked up the mat by the door, and was beating it against the railing, when she noticed a woman slowly walking down the street on the opposite side. She seemed to be paying very close attention to her and Rosie. Just after going past the house, she quickly walked away, turned the corner and disappeared from view. May thought that was odd,

and it set off alarm bells especially when Carly, her next door neighbour who was heading to her garage, mentioned to her that that was the same lady who had passed by earlier. That scared May, and she rushed to the corner to see if the woman was still around. But of course she was gone. She quickly finished the cleanup of the porch, and got Rosie to come inside. She was now determined to not leave her alone outside. The rest of the day was routine, however, and nothing mysterious happened.

Then Sunday finally arrived.

As she suspected, Martin made a big production of this special day. He served her breakfast in bed, and took her suggestion of chocolates and carnations, which were also on the tray. Then after she had eaten, he brought in a wrapped gift, complete with a big red bow. Rosie came in with him. She was carrying a card.

She jumped up on the bed and hugged her mother, and wished her a Happy Mother's Day. She thanked her for the homemade card, and they hugged again.

Then Rosie sat on the edge of the bed while Martin gave her his present. When she unwrapped it, she giggled. It was a see-through sexy negligee. He teased her.

“Maybe we could try it out tonight?”, as he arched his eye brows several times. She scolded him for talking like that in front of Rosie. She pretended to be shocked, but was really aroused at his suggestion. Maybe she would just do that, she mused.

Rosie never picked up on the banter, they were thankful for.

She was too interested on smelling the flowers and checking out the chocolate box. But May knew she had to cut this short, and sorry to have to ruin the mood. It was nearly ten, and she had to get dressed and be ready for this delivery, she reminded them both. So they left and she got ready.

Finally the time came. Exactly at ten, there was a knock on the door. She opened the door, and was startled to see a woman in her late sixties, she guessed.

But even more alarming was the realization that this was the same woman who had gone by the house yesterday.

She asked her what she wanted. “Please let me in. I can explain everything, May.” She was taken aback when she realized this woman already knew her name.

But she let her in, knowing Martin was around to help out, if she needed it. As she ushered her into the living room, she suddenly realized he was nowhere to be found. “Great, just when I need him to be here, he decides to disappear”, she commented to herself. May showed her to the sofa, and they both sat down.

May, always the proper hostess, offered her coffee. The stranger declined. May passed it by too, although she really craved another cup. She didn't want to let this lady out of her sight. May sighed and folded her hands in her lap. She looked directly at the stranger, took a deep breath, and then spoke. “Okay, you have me scared, although a bit curious too. Please tell me what this is all about.” So as the stranger fidgeted with her hands, she also looked directly at May. She cleared her throat, and began in that melodic voice that May had first heard on the phone earlier that week. She apologized for

the mystery, and scaring her as she walked past her house the previous day. She just wanted to take in where she lived, and how well she seemed to be doing, and to get a visual picture of what she looked like, so she wouldn't be so surprised when she finally saw May close up today. She cleared her throat once more and went on with her story.

May was in shock by the time the woman had finished talking.

Then Martin and Rosie came in.

He was grinning like a Cheshire Cat with a secret. He explained that he had just found out what this was all about on Friday. He had received a letter from her at work explaining what this entire 'surprise' was all about. He was so happy for her.

Now, I don't know if May would want me telling everyone.

It is a personal matter. But since I am involved too, I am going to blab. This woman, whose name is Sarah Stevenson, is actually May's real mother. She had given May up for adoption when she was just five months old.

Now that she was getting older, and who knew how much longer she might live, she stated, so she wanted to find her daughter and see her just once. She had brought a photo album to show May what she was like as a baby. After they finished looking through that, it was time to unlock the suitcase and Sarah began pulling out the memorabilia, including such things as a pink baby's blanket and a christening dress. That was some of what was in the suitcase left on the doorstep. Sarah went on to explain that it was too heavy to lug in herself, so she got a friend of hers to drive it over and put in on the porch. She also wanted May's forgiveness. May gave it, despite the shock of not knowing all these years that she was adopted. Sadly the couple she had always known as her parents had both passed away by now.

May, along with Martin, invited Sarah to stay for the rest of the day, and assured her that they wanted to stay in touch.

She was so relieved. She and May hugged and kissed, with tears flowing down their cheeks.

Martin tried to be the macho man, and not join in the tearfest.

He got away with it, as he used this tender moment to look for some Kleenex to give them to wipe away their tears. Poor Rosie didn't know what to do, so she just clung to her mother's legs.

May picked her up, and they had a three-way hug. Once that was over, they settled down to get acquainted. It was all so amazing, they agreed, on how all this had worked out. Sarah finally left late that evening for her apartment, just five blocks away. What are the odds that they had lived so close to each other after all these years. She was so glad to have gotten that all resolved, she stated as she left them. May and her family had a lot to digest, they realized. They admitted that it turned out to be quite the Mother's Day that year for all of them.

And who am I, to be able to tell this story? Well, just call me a dear friend of Sarah and let it go at that. Don't want to give up all the mysteries in this story, now do we!

PELLETIER, Guy J. With sadness we announce the passing of Guy Joseph Pelletier on Thursday May 3, 2018 of Wawa, Ontario at the age of 71 years. Born in LaTuque, Quebec, he landed in Wawa at the age of 13, unable to speak English.

Son of the late Carmen and Oscar Pelletier. Guy is survived by his brother Gilles Pelletier (Donna). Married to the love of his life Darlene for 51 years.

Loving father to Todd (Lorena) and Porky (Dalice). Proud papa to Ryan, Mia and Max. Dear son-in-law of Marie Symanyk (late Nick). Guy was a bushman, he worked hard, played hard and lived on his own terms.

He loved fishing, hunting and being in nature spending most of his days at his camp or bringing his family to places where no man has ever stepped foot.

He was a quiet humble man, we will miss his quick sense of humour (king of the one-linerís), he loved to laugh and talk about his favourite team the Montreal Canadiens. One of his highlights was meeting his hockey idol Guy LaFleur and having beers with him. A private family service was held. Cremation took place at the Riverís Edge Cremation Centre, Sault Ste. Marie. Memorial donations made to the Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

HECHLER, Heinrich F. (Henry) Passed away peacefully at the Lady Dunn Health Centre on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at age 84. Beloved husband of the late Ursula. Cherished father of Kelly (Greg Marsh), Jim (Carrie) and Tina. Adored Opa of Beatrix, Samantha (Mike Delion), Renee, Nicholas, Noah and Julia. Son of the late Rosa and late Heinrich Hechler of Philippsburg Germany, brother of Hannelore and the late Yvonne and late Elsa Maria, he is also survived by nieces and nephews in Germany, the U.S. and Canada. Having survived a childhood in war torn Germany he was an extremely proud Canadian and Wawa resident. A founding member of the Michipicoten golf club, he is remembered for the time and effort he devoted to the Wawa community -- from managing and coaching little league baseball and minor and Junior B hockey teams, to his tireless work as both a volunteer and executive of the golf and curling clubs over more than fifty years. Henry was a passionate competitor who excelled at golf, curling, soccer and baseball and loved nothing more than to bring home a championship trophy. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed all the activities Wawa had to offer, including fishing, hunting and cross country skiing. He loved to share stories of the people he met and the experiences he had as an active and involved member of the community, including the joy

he felt when he was chosen to run part of the Wawa stretch with the 1988 Winter Olympics torch. Henry was proud of many achievements professionally, as a long-time Senior Systems Analyst with AOD, and in sports over the years but he was proudest of his family. Devoted to his wife Ursula and their children and grandchildren, he exemplified unconditional love, strength and loyalty every day. The family would like to acknowledge the friendship and kindness of Henry's neighbours including Blair, Suzette, Suzanne, Lindsay and Adrian, but especially Joey Sauve and his wife Sue, whose years of thoughtfulness and help were deeply appreciated by Henry, Ursula and the family. A visitation will be held at the P.M. Gilmartin Funeral Home (140 Churchill Avenue, Wawa, 705-856-7340) on Friday May 11, 2018 from 5 to 7 pm.

Prostitution vs. Human Sex Trafficking Making The Distinction

Although there is an undeniable connection between prostitution and human trafficking in the context of commercial sexual exploitation (sex trafficking), it is important to make the distinction between the two; keep in mind that although outlining theoretical definitions is possible, reality is far more nuanced. Consent and control are the main distinctions between the two situations. The Criminal Code of Canada under sections 279.1 and subsections, states that there is no consent for human trafficking.

Women who are involved in sex work voluntarily have control over the operations of their work and they consent to it. They keep their money and can make up their own hours and choose their customers (see graphic). On the other hand, trafficked victims may have begun stripping or participating in the making of pornography, but can ultimately end up in forced prostitution.

Victims are being forced, coerced or deceived into participating in sexual behavior for the benefit of the pimp. In addition, the victim will not get to keep any of the money, choose who they work for, when they work, how long they work or make any other decisions. Victims are often times unaware of their rights and they may even feel like

their “boyfriend” loves them and they are doing it to please him.

The following chart demonstrates the differences between prostitution and sex trafficking.

In reality, it is far more difficult to make a clear distinction between voluntary sex work and sex trafficking.

There have been numerous cases documented in Ontario where people initially entered sex work voluntarily but have become increasingly vulnerable to exploitation by pimps due to the nature of the work and the circumstances that led them there to begin with (poverty, substance abuse, homelessness etc) One survivor recounts the dynamics of her experience being trafficked “they knew that I had a dysfunctional family, they knew that I was coming from that, so it was easy, it was easy..”

Under these circumstances we should consider whether it is really a choice when the choice is between having enough to eat and having shelter by participating in the sex trade or not participating in the sex trade and going hungry and becoming homeless.

Permission vs. Restriction

If your everyday dietary regime requires a cheat day, than maybe you should break-up! You are evidently unhappy and unable to sustain the diet trends you are following! Quit restricting yourself! Although we are adults, we act just like children when we are told not to do something, or in this case, eat something: we want it even more!! Give yourself permission to have whatever it is you are craving, do not feel guilty, or ashamed because you “fell off the wagon”, maybe you were on the wrong wagon to being with! Your everyday diet should include a variety of foods you enjoy and are able to sustain for the foreseeable future; you should not have to cheat on it. Instead incorporate

these favorite foods in your diet, eat them and be okay with it, never feel restricted. Sure there are foods we should maybe eat less often, but never tell yourself you CAN’T have something.

We should have a loving relationship built with the foods we consume and never feel the need to “cheat”. Being faithful should be a no brainer!

The Crime Scene la scène du crime Wawa Female Charged With Assault (WAWA, ON) - On Monday April 30, 2018 at approximately 5:50 pm members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Wawa) Detachment responded to a local Wawa address regarding a report of a dispute. Investigation revealed that an altercation had taken place between a female and a male.

As a result a 30 year old Wawa, Ontario female was arrested and charged with the following offence; • Adult Assault - Spousal contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of

Canada.

The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa, Ontario on June 11, 2018.

Wawa Male Charged With Fail To Comply With Recognizance (WAWA, ON) - On Tuesday May 1, 2018 at approximately 8:30 am members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Wawa) Detachment had occasion to stop and investigate a male person in the town of Wawa, Ontario.

Investigation revealed that the male was in breach of his conditions.

As a result Valentino DESMOULIN (57) of Wawa, Ontario was arrested and charged with the following offence: • Adult Fail to Comply with Recognizance contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused is schedule to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa, Ontario at a later date.

Traffic Violation Results In Impaired Charge (WAWA, ON) - On Saturday April 14, 2018 at approximately 1:47 a.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Wawa) Detachment while

on general patrols observed a motor vehicle disobey a traffic sign at a controlled intersection and therefore conducted a traffic stop. Upon speaking with the male driver police detected an odour of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.

As a result Justin FLETCHER (18) of Wawa, Ontario was arrested and charged with the following offences: • Adult Driving While Ability Impaired- motor vehicle (Alcohol) contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada, • Adult Driving with More

than 80mgs. Of Alcohol in Blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada, • Adult Possession of a Schedule II substanceCannabis resin-under 1gram contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa, Ontario on May 7, 2018.
