The kindergarten class at Sir James Dunn received a special surprise last Wednesday.

The Technology team from the board office dropped off a new little critter to the classroom. He is called Bee-Bot and Bee-Bot is a programmable floor robot, ideal for teaching control, directional language and programming / coding to young children. The students had been practicing how to code Bee-Bot using an app on the I pads so when the floor Bee-Bot arrived it sure did not take them long to quickly learn how to code the robot to move around a large grid on the floor. Target locations were set up and the students coded the robot to move forward, move backwards, turn left and turn right

to achieve the desired goal.

The Kindergarten students will also be buddying up with their Grade 4 partners who will become their Tech Buddies so that they can also learn how to code using the exciting new Scratch Junior program.

Many exciting things are happening in the Kindergarten room at SJD. SJD is the place to be!

Michipicoten Chronicles

Ships vs. Gales of November Superior’s Gales are once again upon us. While we huddle in our 21st century homes listening to the shuddering soffit, the wind whistle down the chimney, hoping the neighbors tree doesn’t decide to drop itself on our garage, it is hard to imagine the plight of shipwrecked souls caught out on Superior in days past. The violence, bone-chilling temperatures and the unforgiving topography of the east shore of the largest Great Lake is legendary.

The earliest known shipwreck north of Montreal River Harbour was a passenger-freight steamer called the ACADIA. During heavy seas, the boat ran aground near Grindstone Point south of Old Woman Bay on November 6, 1896. Built in Hamilton in 1867, the ACADIA was the first vessel built in North America to have a composite hull (oak planking over iron frames). Loaded with 21,000 bushels of wheat, a hole in the hull sank the ship in 20 minutes in 12 feet of water.

Before it could be salvaged, the ACADIA was pummelled to pieces by the constant wave action on this exposed rocky point. The crew survived but had to make the long and arduous trek to Gargantua Harbour more than 15 kilometres away. On a calm day kayakers and canoeists alike can still catch glimpses of twisted pieces of the ACADIA’s steel hull trapped among the giant boulders at Grindstone Point. The ships bell is now on display at the Agawa Bay Visitor Centre.

The imposing cliffs and impenetrable shoreline of Old Woman Bay claimed the wreck of the GOSPIE on December 4, 1906. This 200 foot wooden steamer belonging to the MacKay Company of Sault Ste. Marie was downbound from Fort William with a load of supplies for the CPR when it became unresponsive during a fierce snow storm. The ship and its crew of 18 drifted approximately 60 miles/100 kms north from 25 miles off Whitefish Point to where it beached itself near the mouth of the Old Woman River. Captain Boult managed to get everyone safely to shore only to find that they

had very few provisions. He sent 12 of the crew in a yawl boat to Michipicoten River where they could get supplies and send word to the ship’s owners. Ill prepared for the fierce head wind and bonechilling temperatures, the wet and weary crew abandoned the small boat and decided to walk along the coast to Michipicoten instead.

Needless to say the journey was no easy task. The Canadians in the crew fared better than the newly landed immigrants who were quickly overcome with the cold and suffered from their lack of experience in the bush.

Imagine the surprise of Joe Legarde and his guests when 3 of the crew stumbled through the doors of the North Star Boarding House in Michipicoten River Village in the middle of the night. The next morning, William Kimball, John Andre, Alex and Joseph Michaud manoeuvred a rescue boat out through the treacherous Michipicoten River mouth and scoured the shoreline for the remainder of the crew.

Four miles from the village the rescuers came across the half frozen men, one walking in his stocking feet. The villagers spent the next day trying to warm the frozen hands and feet of the motley group.

Joe Legarde’s dog team took the worst of the crew to the Algoma Central Railway in Michipicoten Harbour where they were transported to the care of Dr. Grimshaw at the Helen Mine.

On December 20, 1906, five of the GOLSPIE sailors arrived by tug in Sault Ste. Marie and underwent amputations for severely frost-bitten limbs. One of the men lost both his hands and his feet. One poor soul succumbed to the ordeal after he contracted pneumonia. A letter to the Editor of the Sault Star on December 11, 1906 reported that an investigation

by Magistrate George Reid found that the crew members were to blame for their own fate. The plight of the GOLSPIE was the subject of much parliamentary debate.

The parliament of the day used this tragedy as an argument for developing workmen’s compensation which

was gaining greater support during the administration of Prime Minister Wilfred Laurier.

Little remains of the GOLSPIE. Some remember a ship’s boiler near the mouth of the Old Woman River.

Early scuba divers remember a sunken wooden deck in the southwest corner of the picturesque cove. Rainbow fishermen sometimes snag wooden ribs reaching out of the sandy bottom of the bay while trying to catch the big one. Although little can be found of Superior’s sunken vessels, the stories and tales will continue to instil a sense of wonder and awe about the Lake, especially when the gales of November are upon us.

Wawa Community Food Bank has been assisted by many individuals, organisations and businesses this fall and the volunteers would like to publicly thank all those involved for their support.

First of all, we recognise the people who have made monetary donations or provided fresh produce, canned or frozen food, or clothing and sundry items. Thank you to George Allen, Debra Avis, J.P. Bonneuil, Emma Desgagne, Joanne Dubreuil, Liz McCoy, Christine Menard, Sarah Pinder and Dannica Switzer.

We also thank the anonymous donors who utilise the drop box inside the main doors of 96 Broadway Ave. The kindergarten classes from Ecole Saint Joseph, under the direction of their teachers Monique Gendron and Lorraine Samson, held a lemonade sale earlier this fall.

Working from a list of suggestions, the 40 children made purchases at Valu Mart and proudly carried them to the Food Bank and stocked our shelves. We truly value their effort and support the lesson of giving that this activity imparts.

The local branch of Northern Credit Union has provided welcome personal care products and the Rotary Club of Wawa has provided clients with oral hygiene items. Thank you for this thoughtfulness.

Wawa Salmon Derby donated a variety of food from fish to corn, potatoes and bread products. Thank you for thinking of us.

Rob Ingram from Desbarats Farmers Market has donated much appreciated quantities of fresh produce.

Tracy and Trevor Laing of Level Plains Blueberry Farm have contributed multiple bags of their locally grown potatoes. Thank you so much for this generosity.

Northern Lights Ford once again has shown its commitment to alleviating food insecurity in our community through involvement in the national Ford We Scare Hunger campaign. Their efforts, along with the participation of Ecole Saint Joseph, Saint Joseph French Immersion School and Michipicoten High School have filled two pickup trucks with non-perishables for our food bank. Many thanks are given to Andrew Mackenzie, Lonna Rilley and Danette Mathias as well as the staff and students of the participating schools.

A completely new fundraising initiative was recently sponsored by Roxy Bowling Centre. Rick Gennaro donated $3.00 from every game bowled over the October 21 – 22 week end to Wawa Community Food Bank! The event was a success and clients will definitely benefit

from this considerate enterprise.

We must also sincerely thank the entire staff of the Wawa Economic Development Corporation for their kindness and cooperation all year long. Jesse Labonte and Shawn Mahon must be noted for their willingness to help out in any way, at any time.

As for future events, Algoma Health Unit will offer a flu vaccination walk in clinic on Wednesday, November 8 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in the main lobby at 96 Broadway Ave. This opportunity for immunization is open to anyone in the community and no appointments are required.

Please bring your health card.

Feed The Need, our major food drive and fundraising event, will be held at the Community Centre on Sunday, November 26 from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm. THREE PERSONS CHARGED Drug Warrant (Wawa, ON) - On October 23, 2017 at approximately 5:20 pm members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and members from the Superior East (Wawa) OPP detachment executed a warrant on a residence in the town of Wawa. As a result of police investigation a quantity of drugs were located at the residence with a total street value of $12 030.00.

Three persons were arrested and charged with the following: Pascal GAGNON, 41 years of age from Wawa, Ontario was arrested and charged with: • Possession for the purpose of trafficking - schedule I (cocaine) contrary to Section 5(2) Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) • Possession for the purpose of trafficking - schedule II (cannabis) contrary to Section 5 (2) CDSA • Possession for the purpose of trafficking - schedule II cannabis (oil) contrary to Section 5(2) CDSA The accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Pierre Louis DELGUIDICE, 61 years of age from Dubreuilville, Ontario was arrested and charged with: • Possession for the purpose of trafficking - schedule I (cocaine) contrary to Section 5(2) Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) • Possession for the purpose of trafficking - schedule II (cannabis) contrary to Section 5 (2) CDSA • Possession for the purpose of trafficking - schedule II cannabis (oil) contrary to Section 5(2) CDSA The accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

ment was in the short term by avoiding a strike. The main issue has not been addressed at all. Correctional services has reached a tipping point— with staff shortages, overcrowded and damaged facilities and understaffed nursing stations now being the new normal in Ontario.

Education is another issue that is in crisis mode as a result of short-term planning rather than long-term strategizing. The Liberals have been closing schools at record rates and making cuts to education. Parents and New Democrats cried that the ministry’s new autism program would put added pressure onto our school system a system already struggling to cope with decades of chronic underfunding. To be sure, the Conservatives spawned such cutting strategies in education, but this has continued through 14 years of Liberal governments, particularly in special education.

As a result, children with autism, yet again, are paying the price. Recently hundreds of parents, educators, children and caregivers rallied outside the legislature to call for better access to autism services. NDP MPPs demanded in question period that the Liberals expedite the creation of a comprehensive autism strategy. Nearly a year has passed since Wynne promised to act. To date the Liberal government has failed to deliver on its promise to create an education accessibility standard and has failed to provide the special education resources needed by students with autism. When will the government commit to a comprehensive autism strategy that ensures children with autism get the services they need in an inclusive classroom setting?

Still thinking of the lack of real strategy development, consider the multitude of “strategies” the Liberals have

hatched in regard to hydro.

First we have the Liberal’s green energy strategy designed to encourage investment in various green projects such as solar and wind generation.

But the price paid to green energy producers for making the electricity is far more than the price that customers who consume the energy pay.

As well, who can forget that the Liberals killed a plan for development of a hydro producing gas plant in Toronto for entirely political reasons, but left hydro consumers on the hook for paying off on a construction contract for a plant that doesn’t even exist?

Yes, some strategy that was!

As a result of the whole web of Liberal plans to address Ontario’s energy concerns, families and businesses know they’re paying too much for hydro. So what is the Premier’s “strategy” to address this problem? The Auditor General has confirmed that Kathleen Wynne concocted a hydro borrowing scheme (as opposed to a strategy) that will cost Ontarians $40 billion. The Liberal plan is to make people and businesses pay an extra $4 billion for what amounts to an accounting trick that is merely intended to hide the fact they have no effective strategy.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Ontarians deserve a government with real strategies.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. News From The Park In the Legislature and on the news you continually hear politicians referring to their “strategies.” Ask the average person what a strategy is and chances are they’ll tell you it just means a plan to do something. In fact, however, a strategy is more complex than that. Strategy development is the art and science of bringing about in the longterm a desired future, goal achievement or solution to a problem. It involves the effective, efficient use of resources to meet needs and achieve create an advantage. Knowing this I have to say I question whether the Wynne Liberals have any understanding at all of what a strategy is. Rather it seems they simply put plans into effect that only initially appear to address issues. The effects of these plans are only apparent in the short term.

(I.e. get them through until the next election.)

For example, recently NDP MPP Taras Natyshak called on the government to stop ignoring the ongoing crisis in Corrections Services.

Natyshak met with correction and probation officers from across the province who say they have been let down by the Liberal’s failure to deliver on key commitments they made to make Ontario’s correctional system safer for all those involved.

Just last year the Liberal government spent $50 million in an effort to avert a strike in our province’s jails – a strike that never happened.

As a result, their short term planning only compounded the issue by creating a crisis on top of an ongoing crisis. $50 million later the government’s promise to recognize front-line correctional staff as essential and valued members of our public service has gone unfulfilled. Despite Liberal promises to hire new workers, the daily staffing complement has not increased at all.

Conflict Of Interest Guidelines Need To Be Tightened Up If we listen to corporate Canada we might believe the only possible future for pensions is to move away from the defined benefit model in favour of a defined contribution system, also known as targeted benefit plans. Under that system there is no guarantee of what pensioners will eventually receive, only how much they will contribute as employees. That was the system called for in a speech to investors by an executive from Canada’s largest private pension company, Morneau Shepell, back in 2013. That executive is now our Finance Minister and media reports claim he is using loopholes to skirt around conflict of interest guidelines while introducing pension legislation in the House of Commons. This is something that parliament has been seized with lately.

The CBC reported in midOctober that the Finance Minister forgot to tell the Ethics Commissioner about a French Villa he owns. That same report also explained that the Minister used loopholes in the Conflict of Interest Act to place Morneau Shepell shares in a private numbered company that he still controls - instead of divesting them, or placing them in a blind trust.

As a result, the Conservatives and New Democrats brought motions to parliament on the subject in the last week.

Perhaps the biggest concern being raised by MPs relates to the Minister’s legislation, Bill C-27, which would increase the use of targeted benefit plans. The NDP says it is undeniable that if C-27 were to become law, Morneau Shepell will benefit significantly from additional business and revenue, and that as a massive investor, the Minister would personally benefit financially from the passage of that law.

They explained that shares he

controls in the company have been paying him monthly dividends (in the neighbourhood of $150,000/month) through the private company he placed them in – and still controls.

New Democrats also tell us that five days after Bill C-27 was tabled, the value of shares in Morneau Shepell shot up by almost 5%, an increase that could have allowed the Minister to make as much as 2 million dollars and even if he sells the shares to divest himself he still comes out on top. That’s why people are calling this, at the very least, a perceived conflict of interest since the Minister was in a position to further his own private interests through his public duties.

Opposition MPs believe these are compelling reasons to revisit the loopholes being employed by the Minister. The New Democrat motion called on the government to immediately close the loopholes in the Conflict of Interest Act. The language echoes recommendations from the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner dating back to 2013 and would prevent any Minister of the Crown from personally benefiting from their position or creating the perception thereof going forward.

Both opposition motions were defeated in separate votes. The focus will now move onto C-27 which, if defeated, would send a strong message from the government that they will stand up to any conflict of interest. That bill has not begun to move through parliament yet, so it may take time to see how the government proceeds. In the meantime, they could still bring in changes to the Conflict of Interest Act to clean up these loopholes to preserve Canada’s good reputation.

Szekely, Mr. Michel Lemoyne, Ms. Carole Bouffard and Mr. Shane Mills, made his way to Obatanga Lake for a threeday canoe expedition. The group also had a few surprises in store for Grégoire as he celebrated his 18th birthday during the trip. According to Grégoire, this trip will be one he will remember for the rest of his life.

A Missing Person And More Mystery “Professor John Grey from Mystery Stories Clubs of Canada here - As promised, I was there in Wawa for their November, 2016 meeting. I brought one of my case files to use as the basis for whatever story the group wanted to create for me. Actually it was still active, although just on the verge of being completed.

I was planning to finish it up while the group was busy with their stories. Well, it turned out to be an interesting evening, as I will explain shortly- This case began in March of 2015. It was treated as a missing person file by the police for a while, until I, and events over time, eventually were able to change that. First, let me give you the background.

Tom Burgess was a lawyer from Thunder Bay, who also had an office in Marathon and Nipigon He usually dedicated a couple of days each month to these offices. He had been doing this for nearly five years.

Most cases involved preparing wills and real estate deals.

Occasionally he got divorce cases, and then the more violent cases like sexual assault.

This particular client, Deidre Hallinger, was meeting with Burgess at his Thunder Bay office on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 12th. She lived in Marathon, but happened to be in Thunder Bay on other business that day. Her case involved a divorce petition, with sexual assault being part of the cause.

She outlined the details of the ongoing abuse, which had been happening for at least three years. The 'straw that broke the camel's back' was a couple of weeks prior to this date, she explained, when her commonlaw spouse, Hal Ballard, came home that night drunk out of his mind, and clearly wanted a fight. She made the mistake of trying to appease him by offering him a beer. He scowled at the bottle, declaring it wasn't his regular brand, and it was too warm, to boot. He threw the bottle at her, hitting her on her right upper arm. Then he got up from the chesterfield and chased her around the house, finally catching up with her in the kitchen. He tried to choke her, but she was able to break free from his grasp. She grabbed a butcher knife that was in the knife block on the counter by the stove. She thrust it at him, with the idea of just trying to get him to back off.

However, he lunged at her, and he walked right into the blade.

It punctured his sternum, and lodged in his heart. She immediately pulled the knife out as a reflex action. Blood began to spurt out of his chest area, and he dropped to the floor where a pool of blood began to form.

She said she went into shock, as she stared at him laying on the floor, gasping for air. Shortly after that, he gave out one last breath before dying.

Finally she called 911 for an ambulance. It was obvious that he was dead when it arrived. The police were called

in, of course, based on what the ambulance attendants had encountered upon arrival.

So an investigation was launched. She was questioned, of course, and it was determined that she killed him in self defense. At least that was the official police findings.

The insurance company that had her policy was not convinced, so they hired me to investigate further. So I began by interviewing her neighbours, friends and relatives. I soon got a feeling that she was not the victim at all, but the aggressor.

There was one relative left that I wanted to interview before I gave my report to the company.

The reason that she was meeting Burgess on this date, though, was a monetary matter. She wanted help with her problem with the insurance company, in that it would not release the money she was due on his life insurance policy until they had completed their investigation to ensure that everything was legitimate. She interrupted him there by saying that she knew that, as her sister and next door neighbour told her about a PI snooping around and asking questions.

Apparently when he explained to her that this was indeed the normal practice, and she would just have to wait, she became quite angry, and began yelling at him. Even though the door to his office was closed, his secretary, Miss Abigail Bacon, could hear her. She was shocked with the vitriolic outburst that lead to her threatening him. It ended with her declaring that all lawyers were the same, and she would kill him if she didn't get results by the next day. She also warned him that she was on her way now to take care of this PI. She flung the door open, and stormed out. Burgess rushed out behind her, obviously shaken. He stopped and leaned against the outer door of the office, shaking. He watched her jump into her car, and gunning it as she tore out of the parking lot, narrowly missing his and Abigail's cars, and drove away. He turned to Abigail and tried to laugh it off by saying 'Well, that didn't go too well, did it.' He finished by telling her that he was going to call the insurance company to get up to speed on her case, and to give them a head's up to warn me of what was coming my way. Of course I was down in my office in Toronto, so she would have a long way to come to confront me, so I was not worried.

The next day Deidre called him on the phone. We aren't sure what was said exactly, but he was visibly upset when he came out of his office. Miss Bacon stated that he told her that this woman had threatened to kill him again, once he told her that the insurance company was still holding up payment, as per their policy.

He told his secretary that he had called me directly after her threatening phone call, and declared that he was sure that

she was mentally disturbed, and began to think that she may have indeed killed her husband in a fit of rage. That made self defense unlikely. That confirmed what I was concluding too.

Despite this case being a major concern right then, Burgess left for his scheduled visit to his office in Marathon in the late morning of that Thursday, the 14th. He assured her that it would be fine. He would see her the following Monday The last words he said to his secretary was that he had one urgent matter to attend to in Marathon, and would pop into the Nipigon office on his way back Friday afternoon.

Miss Bacon warned him to be careful, knowing full well it was about the Hallinger case, and have a safe journey.

That was the last time she saw him alive. When he didn't come back to the office on Monday as planned, she called his home phone number, but just got the voice mail. The she called the Marathon office to see if he had stayed there over the weekend for some reason. The secretary there said that he never came to the office. She just assumed he went to the Nipigon office instead, and ran out of time to come there. There were no clients waiting for him anyway – just some paperwork to sign, so there was no urgency, and saw no concerns when he didn't show up there.

She was in a panic. She told Natalie, the Marathon secretary, about the run-in with Deidre. Should she call the police, or just wait until the next day, just in case he stopped over somewhere along the way, she asked. They decided, against her better judgment, to wait until the following day, Tuesday, before taking any action. She admitted afterwards about the nagging feeling that something was wrong, though, and she should have called the police immediately on Monday. But hindsight...

When there was no word by Tuesday afternoon, she made that call. They advised that it had just been barely 24 hours, and she should wait until later in the day to call again, if he didn't show up.

Of course, he didn't. A search and investigation didn't start until Wednesday afternoon.

Patrols up and down the highway between Marathon and Thunder Bay found nothing.

Pleas for information in the media outlets came up empty too. By the following Monday they were at a dead end.

When Miss Bacon called them that day for an update, she was distressed at that news.

She was sure more could and should have been done. She pleaded with them to try harder, and pursue any leads or tips that came in. They assured her that they always did that, in any case.

It was a week later that I got a call from the insurance company to come on board to follow up on this mysterious disappearance.

Well, let me tell you, this was turning into a disturbing case.

It was also looking more and more like Deidre was guilty of one, and possibly two murders.

During my investigation of her background, I uncovered many cases of her violent rage, lead-

ing to assaults. In one instance, a woman had been attacked with a hockey stick at the arena in the stands behind the bench, when 'Dee' decided that her nephew had been boarded, and this other woman was the mother of the boy who hit him.

She ended up with a severe concussion, a broken nose, a black eye that she later lost her sight in, and two broken teeth.

Another time it was in a bar, when a young man accidentally bumped into her while she was staggering towards the washroom. There just happened to be a beer bottle on the table beside her.

She picked it up and swung at him, hitting him in the side of his head, dropping him onto the floor, knocked out cold. She then started kicking him in the ribs and groin, until some of the other patrons were able to pull her off him.

In both those cases, she had been charged with malicious assault, and been sent to jail for a few months each time.

Those two run-ins had happened many years earlier, when she was in her early twenties, and before she married Hal. More recently she seemed to have been able to control her anger, as I could not find any other reports of assaults anyway.

It was in early August when a discovery was made along Highway 17 just north of Marathon. A maintenance crew was working on replacing some guard rails when one of them discovered a wrecked car down in the gully, partially buried under some broken branches of a tree. The car had obviously lost control, narrowly missing the guard rails, and careened down the embankment, and came to a violent end when it hit the tree. The impact smashed the front end quite severely, as well as knocking off a huge tree branch, which helped to cover it up. That was why no one ever noticed it down there before.

The crew climbed down to get a closer look. They recoiled in horror at the sight of the mangled body pinned to the steering wheel. They quickly retreated back up the embankment, and radioed for the police. They were obviously shaken up at the sight, the investigating officer told me later. He confirmed to me that it was indeed Burgess. He also disclosed that he had been alive for days, pinned inside the car, and unable to get out. Of course, he eventually died of exposure and or the results of his injuries. But he was able to write a brief note. Somehow, he explained to me, he was able to get a pencil and paper out of his brief case, which was laying beside him. However the note was never finished. He told me what Burgess had written: FORCED OFF ‫ ۓ‬D LEFT ME. With that note, and other evidence that I was able to discover, they arrested her for second degree murder in his death, as well as that of her husband.

She was found guilty on both charges. She was given a 15 year sentence for both murders.

Of course, she never did get her money from the insurance company, thanks in part to my work on the case that I gave to their inspector. I'm sure that must have pissed her off.

I got a call from him a few days later to let me know that she had escaped from the penitentiary out West, on Friday, October 14th, 2016. On Wednesday, November 4th, I got a post card, along with other mail that my secretary at Head Office in Toronto had forwarded to me here in Wawa at the motel. It was a photo along Highway 17 of The Sleeping Giant near Thunder Bay. When I turned it over to read the message, I got two shocks. It had just two words in bold letters YOU'RE NEXT! I gasped. Then I noticed that it was postmarked from here in Wawa on Tuesday, October 25th. It was clearly a threat from 'Deidre! She must have found out from my office that I would be here in Wawa She was lurking around here somewhere. Oh, oh! And I had thought this case was over!...

At this meeting there were the usual gang, but also one new one that I had never seen before. Nobody introduced her, as they each thought one of the others had brought her along.

After the meting was over, we broke up for coffee and dessert. I was curious about this stranger, as she had not said anything during the session, and had not written very much.

I introduced myself in the kitchen while pouring a coffee. We were the only two people in the room at that time. I offered one, but she declined. She seemed quite nervous, and kept her head down, and her right hand in her sweater pocket. I turned to pour my coffee when I felt a sharp pain in my back, just above my kidney. I dropped my cup and grabbed onto the counter. Then I felt a second jab in the same area. I started to slump to the floor. Then as I lay on the floor, I saw blood pouring onto the floor. Just as she had a butcher knife hovering over me, ready to plunge it into me for the fatal blow, she yelled out: I AM DEIDRE AND YOU WILL PAY FOR RUINING MY LIFE, JUST LIKE I WARNED YOU!” Thankfully one of the ladies happened to come into the kitchen just then, and saw what was about to happen. She ran over to her, and wrestled her to the floor. The others came in then, to see what all the commotion was about. They got her subdued and called the police..

So that meeting turned out to be quite memorable for all of us. Hopefully I never have anything like that happen to me again. But it sure gave my group of writers something to write about in our next session we had. By the way, as I write from their November 1, 2017 meeting I can report that I recovered from my wounds just fine, and Deidre has been convicted of my attempted murder. However this time, she was declared insane and sent to an asylum instead of prison instead. I guess that is the best place for her, although I am partial in this case, and felt prison was more appropriate, as she had planned this act for a while. She knew what she was doing. That temper of hers...

But I have to accept the verdict.

I just hope she is kept there, and doesn't get a chance to see the outside world again...

Prepare and distribute quarterly newsletters Maintain Membership database • Keep website up-to-date Order supplies as needed • Maintain daily bookkeeping and journal entries using Simply Accounting Check GIC’s and make sure members are getting their monies on time reinvesting ones that have matured.

Year end preparation for audit.

Posting for Tenders.

Oversee the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable Administer Benefit Programs Insertion of investments into Simply Accounting.

2. Provide support to the Trustees to ensure that they are provided with the resources to fulfill their responsibilities and make informed decisions: • Maintain confidentiality in all duties Prepare monthly financial statements • Schedule, plan and prepare for Board meetings • Set Meeting agendas with Chairperson • Provide travel arrangements for Board Members • Act as Recording Secretary at all committee/Board Meetings • Provide Administrative support to Trust Chairperson and Finance Committee Chairperson.

Mens Curling Men’s Curling 2017 – 2018, Wawa Looks like summer has come to an end. Now it is time to plan for winter fun.

Men’ Curling begins Monday – November 6th at 7:00PM. We welcome back all of the past curlers and also hope to see some new faces.

No past experience is required. And, if you want to play and are not on a team we will try and match you up with a team.

too busy to commit to curling every week – no problem – add your name to the Spare Board.

Hockey Player of the WeekMatthew Castonguay Tuesday Mixed League

Bantam left winger Matthew Castonguay is a young man chock full of talent and a wonderful ambassador of our minor hockey program both on and off the ice. This grade 8 student studies in Dubreuilville at St. Joseph School and loves to follow the Montreal Canadians, although possibly a mandatory obligation when residing in the Castonguay family. Matthew is a first year Bantam player and before donning his #14 shirt prefers salad and chicken as a pregame energy boost before facing the opposition. He enjoys spending time at the rink and making lasting friendships with his teammates. When he is not at the rink he hones his skills by shooting pucks in the driveway....and breaking siding! Matthew is aspiring to following in his dad's bladeprints who's Junior A team placed second in the Royal Bank Cup in Fort McMurray in 2001 when Matthew was but a twinkle in his dad's eye.

With his drive and determination we will all follow Matthew in his successes on and off the ice.

This past Sunday Wawa hockey fans were once again entertained at our local arena by our Novice and Atom Travellers as they went head to head with the Hearst HLK. The Novice team was up against some strong competition and although our youngsters played hard, there is still much work to be done. Our Atoms played well but in the end got edged out of both their games, 5-4 and 7-4. Our Novice, Atom, Peewee and Bantam teams will now be

of our rep hockey teams head to Kapuskasing and Hearst to play their first 4 of 12 outof-town games as part of the NEOHA League play.

Also this past weekend our Bantam Travellers made the trek to St. Ignace, Michigan to participate in the Bantam AA "Battle at the Bridge". Our Wawa boys are a small group of 10 skaters and 2 goalies and therefore asked to affiliate 3 players from our major Peewee group for this tournament. This formidable group of athletes battled teams from across Michigan state with their first game on Friday facing Flint Jr Firebirds. On Saturday our team faced the Dionisi Stars and the Soo Lakers, and Sunday the tournament wound up with our Bantams facing off with Grand Rapids Griffins. Our Bantam boys dominated in all four games in the round robin and the final nailbiter 1-1 tie in midway final period was broken by two quick goals and an empty net goal crushed the competition.
