Annual Feed The Need Day

Article & photos by Barb Fisher Wawa's Food Bank's biggest yearly drive to fill the shelves for the Christmas season was held last Sunday and the Community Centre was a buzz of excitement with generous folk who came by to chat, share lunch, take in the entertainment and offer give food items or a monetary donation to the cause. For the past several years now the Feed the Need Day has been an amazing event and this was another memorable fundraising experience with a record crowd attending generating record donations to the cause.

Two schematic barometers were mounted on the wall of the hall illustrating the collec-

tion of dollars and food items, with a continuous accounting rising up the scale depicting this year's total donations, and this year's food items doubled that of last year. The food boxes were quickly and continually filling up as residents came in with their donations, deposited their gifts and enjoyed the line-up of fantastic music and dancing. The hall was filled with families with youngsters clutching their balloons while selecting a Subway sandwich of their choice, a cold drink from the John's Valu-Mart's table, and a hot coffee or tea from the Tim Hortons' coffee corner.

The crowd this year surpassed expectation and Subway attendants had to quickly assemble

more subs with no interruption in the festivities. For many years now the Ministry of Natural Resources has taken an active part in the drive and several uniformed MNR empoyees accompanied by their mascot Smokey the Bear were on board to help out.

Continuous music offered by our talented musicians completed the celebration. Representatives of the Goodtimers music group decked out in their santa hats belted out Christmas songs laced with a little country twang that the Goodtimers do so well. Matthew Schumacher kept the momentum going by adding many tunes on the keyboard, and Clinton Moody the new pastor of Calvary Church was very comfortable in his new surroundings entertaining us with his guitar and lyrics. Young hip hop dancers representing our Defined Movement Dance club filled the hall dancing amongst the tables prompting much clapping and toe tapping to their lively moves. The celebration finished up with a great keyboard finale by Kaireen Morrison, truly a woman of many talents.

Wawa EDC Update News From The Park The Fall By-Hand Festival saw great success for the Wawa Economic Development Corporation. Our table, shared with Kaireen Morrison and the Wawa Heritage Committee, sold our Lift for the Legion Wawa Holiday Shirts as well as a number of our limited release Wawa – 150 Years Souvenir Book.

All proceeds from the Lift for the Legion Holiday Shirts go to the Wawa Legion Accessibility Fund. The Wawa Legion is currently not accessible to many patrons with physical disabilities and their goal is to install a chair lift to the building and to renovate the lounge to have barrier-free washrooms. We still have a few shirts available at the EDC and they range from sizes small to XXL and they make a

great gift for your Wawa loving family and friends!

“Wawa – 150 Years” is a souvenir history book written by Nick Dunham of the Wawa Economic Development Corporation with support from the Wawa Heritage Committee to help celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial anniversary. The book highlights the Wawa area and the impact that it has made on Ontario and Canada. There are a limited number of copies available and more will not be printed after they are sold out, so get your hands on a copy as soon as possible.

Recently a constituent who regularly reads this column called my constituency office to offer an opinion on why the Liberals are working so hard and spending so much on media advertising to get Kathleen Wynne’s face in the public eye lately. She said that it’s probably because they are afraid no one recognizes her face. Why? Perhaps it’s because she has been turning her back on the people of Ontario for so long.

For example, just recently NDP MPP Health Critic France Gélinas questioned why the Liberals continue to turn their backs on diabetics in this province. She informed the legislature that every four hours in our province, somebody has a leg or a foot amputated. This means that every year 2,000 people in Ontario have a foot amputated because of an ulcer that won’t heal.

There is a body of evidence that shows that if we were to fund offloading devices, most of those amputations would be prevented. These devices are similar to a walking cast and are critical to helping ulcers heal. Most of those people would heal and be able to walk on their two legs like you and me. But Wynne continues to turn her back on diabetics in this province.

Children as well are unfortunately too familiar with seeing Premier Wynne’s back.

NDP MPP critic for Poverty Reduction, Paul Miller, commented on the release of the Campaign 2000 report card on Child and Family Poverty.

He said that the lack of progress on poverty reduction in this province means that Ontario children are needlessly suffering. It seems that every year when this report card is released, we just see a continuation of the same problems.

This is simply unacceptable.

Even one child experiencing the effects of poverty – hunger, food insecurity, and homelessness – is too many. Ontario needs a premier with a complete plan to begin to address this problem in its entirety. We need someone who will “face up” to this issue.

Still thinking of our children, a report released this month by Children’s Mental Health Ontario outlines the serious problems caused by waits of up to 18 months for mental health services for children and youth. This report revealed that one in four parents have missed work to care for their child’s anxiety. The survey uncovered long waitlists for children’s mental health supports — and discovered that even when families finally do get help - they often do not get the services they need. Clearly the long waitlists for mental health services didn’t happen overnight.

They are the result of chronic

underfunding by consecutive Liberal and Conservative governments which force children to access hospital care as a last resort. This alternative puts extra strain on our struggling hospitals because these kids have nothing else and they reach crisis situations. This all around stress just mounts up and adds to an already difficult situation for families, the education system, doctors and, most importantly, our children.

The Liberals had promised to introduce comprehensive labour law reforms this year – finally. New Democrats tabled several amendments that were aimed at improving working conditions. Our changes would address the areas in which the Liberal’s labour bill would let people down. The same amendments were introduced at the committee stage, and some even were introduced as separate bills in the legislature.

Our amendments would end exemptions that allow some workers to be paid less than minimum wage. They’d ensure everyone would be entitled to paid sick and personal emergency leave days and enhance the number of vacation days so they stay healthier – physically and mentally. Our amendments would give survivors of domestic violence the time they need to get medical care or find a safe place to live.

These things are the right thing to do for everyone in Ontario. But once again, what did Premier Wynne do? She turned her back on working people and their families.

Kathleen Wynne has ignored the needs of people and families, leaning on reannouncements and stretch goals with no funding commitments. Ontarians are tired of an endless string of major disappointments and I don't blame them for feeling let down. They are tired of having a premier who turns her back on them and can’t face up to realities.

I say again – it doesn’t have to be this way. We need a premier that shares the priorities of Ontario families - one who has a plan that offers hope one who knows what it’s like to work day after day under difficult working conditions and outside stresses. We need someone who knows how hard it is to raise children or care for aging parents. We need someone who knows what it is like to open her own hydro bill. We need someone who won’t turn her back on us anymore.

Notice of Public Consultation on the Proposed Issuance of a Long-Term Care Home Licence to Manitouwadge General Hospital (the “Licensee”) The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) is considering the issuance of a licence undertaking for the operation of Manitouwadge General Hospital (now known as Santé Manitouwadge Health) (the “Home”), a 9-bed long-term care (LTC) home located at 1 Health Care Crescent in Manitouwadge, Ontario. The current licence for the Home will expire on June 30, 2021.

At least three years prior to expiration, the MOHLTC must provide notice to the Licensee that no new licence would be issued for the Home upon expiration or give an undertaking that a new licence would be issued to the Licensee if specified conditions are met.

If approved, a new licence for 9 beds with a term of 10 years as of July 1, 2021 would be issued for the Home, subject to all applicable requirements and conditions.

In accordance with section 106 of the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007, public opinion is being sought prior to a final decision being made relating to this proposal. If you have comments or opinions and would like to bring them to the attention of the MOHLTC, you may:

Evaluating The Impact Of Melting Icebergs At the beginning of November, grade 7 and 8 students at école Saint-Joseph (Wawa) examined the impact of melting icebergs on sea levels. With the guidance of their teacher, Ms. Emilie Welsh, students conducted recherche and experimented

with different materials. At the end, everyone came to the same conclusion: the melting icebergs have a serious impact on sea levels which can result in the disturbance of human infrastructure.

La semaine du 6 au 10 novembre, les élèves de la 7e et 8e année de l’école Saint-Joseph (Wawa) ont évalué l’impact de la fonte des glaciers sur le niveau de la mer. Sous la direction de leur enseignante, Mme Emilie Welsh, les élèves ont fait des recherches et ont expérimenté avec divers matériaux.

Tous les groupes sont arrivés

à la même conclusion : les glaciers qui fondent augmentent le niveau de la mer qui peut ensuite endommager l’infrastructure humaine.

The Kindergarten students at Sir James Dunn have been very interested in police officers lately so their teacher Mrs. Bernath invited the OPP to visit their classroom. The focus of the visit was to let the little ones know that while officers do arrest people and put them in jail, that is not the only part of their job.

When the two officers arrived they addressed themselves as Levi and Meagan and they showed the students a little video that focused on all the different types of situations they may encounter. The students loved seeing that police officers can use dogs, helicopters, boats, snowmobiles and four wheeler to help them out. The highlights of the visit were when Meagan

showed them the various tools she carries on her belt and of course sitting in and turning on the lights of the police cruiser. The day before the visit the students wrote up a list of questions that they would like answered. Meagan and Levi were put on the spot when they were asked about the ghost cars and why they use them.

Mrs. Bernath and her Kindergarten class would like to thank Levi and Meagan for spending time with us, teaching us about how you keep people safe in our community and leaving us with some pencils, sticker badges, cool pictures of your cruiser and coupons for a free hot chocolate. École Publique L'escalade Launches “Wish Upon A Star” Campaign

Making Taffy For Saint Catherine’s Day At École Saint-Joseph (Wawa), the tradition of making taffy for Ste-Catherine’s day continues. This year, with the help of their teacher Ms. Carole Bouffard, students made taffy as part of

the Aboriginal Studies curriculum. Students made one batch with a molasses bases and another batch with a birch syrup base. The taffy was then enjoyed by all the students in the school.

Cette année, sous la supervision de leur enseignante, Mme Carole Bouffard, les élèves ont préparé de la tire dans le cadre du curriculum

Par la suite, tous les élèves de l’école ont eu l’occasion de se sucrer le bec.

For Wawa residents, the name Surluga instantly conjures images of an overgrown gravel road, abandoned headframes, rusted mining equipment and forgotten ghost towns.

Tom Surluga was born in Krizisce, Croatia in 1907. As a teenager he found himself bound for Northern Ontario and quickly mastered English and the use of a pick and shovel. Tom first came to the Wawa region to work on the completion of the new power plant at Michipicoten High Falls in 1930. In 1931 Tom took up prospecting with Cliff Miller for $2.50/ day along the Catfish Creek and Black Trout Lake north of Wawa. Supplies were loaded in a canoe, poled up the currents of the Magpie River and portaged over a mile and a half. Though nothing substantial developed in this area, Tom had caught the prospecting bug.

From 1950 to 1960 Tom was drawn to the abandoned Michipicoten gold mines south of Wawa Lake. He staked and re-staked mining claims in the vicinity of the old Cora and Jubilee mine sites. In September 1960 Tom re-staked his claim and 3 days later was negotiating its sale. Surluga Gold Mine was formed in 1962. In 1966 at the age of 73, Tom drilled the first hole and helped celebrate in the excitement of the development of one of many gold mine operations in Wawa’s long mining history.

Between 1968 and 1969, over thirty thousand tonnes of rock were removed from the mine workings producing 2,300 ounces of silver and 99,000 ounces of gold.

The original Surluga Gold Mine operated as the Pango Gold Mines and Pursides Gold Mines Ltd from 1973 to 1980. It was last operated

by Citadel Gold Mines Inc. from 1980 to 1999. The towering head frame was a con

stant site for Wawa residents scanning the forest topography along the south shore of Wawa Lake.

The gravel access road from Hwy 101 to the Surluga property was once a popular route called the Surluga Road. It was regularly travelled by local history buffs, recreationalists and those residents searching for any familiar sign of the numerous deserted mines and abandoned town sites that were once a part of the lucrative boom and bust mining economy of the 1900’s.

Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing Phoenix Pay System Coming Back To Haunt The Government - Again In mythology the Phoenix rises from the ashes of its predecessor and is repeatedly born again. In some ways it is a fitting namesake for Canada’s beleaguered federal pay system that continues to draw back into the news time and again for all the wrong reasons. It has become the government’s recurring headache and a solution is not in sight.

According to Auditor General, Michael Ferguson, fixing the Phoenix Pay System is going to take longer than anticipated and also cost more than budgeted for. In his report to parliament this week, the federal watchdog found that successive governments have been unable to address the issue-plagued system that has affected thousands of employees. This is not good news and the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) has already asked the government to look into an alternative to Phoenix.

Before it was rolled out, the government brushed aside calls from unions and public servants to delay the implementation of the system.

Since then, more than half of public servants have experienced ongoing pay problems.

Despite the promise of a fix by the end of October 2016, a full year later, the problem hasn’t been resolved. New Democrats are saying that since the government has yet to find a solution, they should demonstrate openness to

PIPSC's proposal for a plan B. The Auditor General believes it will take years to fix the Phoenix payroll mess which has left thousands of employees overpaid, underpaid, or not paid at all. He said the government is underestimating the time and real cost of a long-term solution which they have already set aside $540 million for. In his report, Mr. Ferguson also called on the Treasury Board of Canada and Public Services and Procurement Canada to track and publicly report on the plan.

As of this week, the number of public servants affected continues to grow, with 265,000 civil servants reported to have experienced pay problems. New Democrats are supporting calls made by PIPSC for the government to look into a plan B since Phoenix continues to be a costly problem for Canada and our public service employees.

They believe the experience and expertise of public servants in charge of remuneration as well as unions should be at the centre of developing an alternative plan and worry the government could repeat the mistake of ignoring warnings from those at the center of the storm.

There is also concern being expressed over the fact that the minister responsible for this file has not ruled out the possibility that the costs could surpass $1 billion and still has no deadline to fix it. No matter what, at this

point there is no comfort in the realisation that despite promises the system would save Canadian tax payers $70 million a year, it could just as easily cost us $1 billion if we follow the same path that has yet to produce any results.

It’s clear that more contracting out is not the remedy for Phoenix and that the focus needs to be on rebuilding a publicly-administered federal payroll system.

A Critic's Murder “Oh, please don't shoot. I am sorry for ruining your chances to have that happen. But that whole production was horrible. You know it was. Just tell me what you want to make it all right.”

With a pistol aimed right at my heart, I waited. “Were you paid to write such a scathing review?”

I hesitated, but when I heard the cocking I knew it was time to say it. So I took a deep breath, and said, “Yes, it's true. The Toronto Star promised me an influential job that would make me a person to reckon with in the arts scene in Toronto and indeed Canada and beyond. I just had to prove I could be brutal, despite friendships, and even if the production was good. “ The reply was also brutal and swift. “I see." Without another word, the pistol was fired. Three shots hit me in the head, throat, and chest. I saw my life flash in front of, my eyes, just like they say. I took one last breath, and then blacked out. This happened on Sunday, November 28, 1937.

And now my worry is: will they find my murderer. So let me tell you how I got here.

My name is Jerry Whitman, and I am the movie and theatre critic for the Braxton Herald newspaper. That is a small town in Eastern Ontario. We are famous for our theatre and the stage productions that are put on every year. Right now the Guild are getting ready to present 'A Christmas Carol'. Being the critic as well as doing the publicity I was often in on their dress rehearsals. Yes, I guess it is a bit of a conflict of interest, but with this small a group, we often had to double up on our jobs in order to get things done.

It was looking awful. I told them so too. After all it is my duty to offer suggestions to improve what they are going to present to their paying audience. For the outrageous ticket prices that they are selling for, I for one would want an outstanding production that would warrant a standing ovation at the end. From what I have seen so far, it will get a very tepid response. And they want to run it for six nights over 3 weekends. It will close after one evening, I think.

Here is the review that was published in the paper Saturday night after Friday's debut that has gotten everyone upset. And this one was a real stinker. I felt bad, too, as I knew everyone involved.

“The Theatre Guild has tackled a challenging play to wrap up their season. 'A Christmas' Carol' is a famous well known story about Ebeneezer Scrooge, and has been made into countless movies, and on Broadway.

Naturally this version will inevitably be compared to the best version, the movie.

The cast includes John Johnson as Scrooge, Alex Stanfield as Bob Cratchett, Sylvia Woods as his wife, Luke Martin as Tiny Tim, Steven Woodward as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Art Stevens as Ghost of Christmas Present, and Howard Stewart as Christmas Future.

The production team that looked after the sets and props, was headed by Gustav Hornecki.

We all know him as the owner of the hardware/building store.

He provided the material for the sets, and the students in the woodworking class of Mr. Liam McBride got the sets in place.

Carl Sturgess and his Arts class did the painting which transformed an empty stage into the back drop of the rooms.

Brian Oliver, who works at the lighting store downtown, looked after the lighting. The choreographer responsible for the actors' movements across the stage was Miranda Harris. She has her own dance studio downtown.The music was provided by the high school band, headed by Gloria Young, our wonderful young music teacher in her first year of teaching.. Costumes were crafted by our own public school Home Ec teacher, Lois Puttermann, with help from her students.

Finally the Director who put it all together is Ralph Page, the Drama Department head at the high school.

Where to start? The set was dismal. From the audience seats, all I saw was a black wall. I suspect Mr. Sturgess never came out here where us viewers sit, so as to judge what was required to make it visible and outstanding. He should have worked more closely with Mr. Hornecki to avoid this mishap. Speaking of highlighting – the lighting director has obviously never done this before.

The lights all pointed to the floor, and a lot of the time the actors were in the dark because of those positions.

The props like the bed and table and chairs, did not look anything like what it would have been in that time. I understand that this is just an amateur company trying to do their best with what they have. But a little research would not have hurt.

There is an excellent antique store in town that could have helped out, I am sure. The same goes for the costumes. They looked like the brown prison garb inmates wear, and not even close to what they should have been, if they were trying to follow the book. And so baggy too.

I really had to stifle a giggle at how pathetic they looked on the actors. Fortunately, they didn't seem to be aware of how they looked to us in the audience.

Once the play began, and the actors came on stage, they moved so stiffly and self consciously that it became a distraction for the story itself. I realize they are just amateurs, and it showed. It was painful to watch. The choreographer, Miranda Harris, must not have spent much time working on this. They should have had a voice coach too, as they didn't project their voices out into the audience. There was lots of the talking that I could not hear, and I was in the second row! The book adaptation by Anne Burton was dreadful. I would have thought she could have done a better job, since she works at the library and deals with books all day long. It showed in the actors' deliveries

of the words. The only actor who appeared to have any talent was Mr. Stanfield. He tried his best at least.

The music did not help either.

It was too loud, and drowned out some of the actor's speeches. The violin section were out of tune and seemed to be out of sync with the rest of the orchestra.

That's what you get when you get students to play in what is supposed to be a first class production. Surely a few dollars paid out for a proper orchestra would have been worth it. Our music teacher did the best she could I guess.

I wrap up with the director, Ralph Page. He claims to be a professional director, with many productions to his credit. He claims that in fact a scout was in the audience last night to scout him out for a chance to hit the big times on Broadway. I am afraid he lost any hope of that happening, after what was presented to us last night.

I predict the other performances will be canceled due to lack of an audience. That is the good news – put everyone out of their misery. I apologize, but you know it is just my job at the paper to tell it like it is. I felt the audience last night gave you a lukewarm applause, and that was just to be kind. Let's see how that translates into attendance at the next shows, if they do indeed go on.

To rap this up, this play runs next Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office Monday to Friday between 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $10 – but should be reduced to $2, considering what you are getting for your money. Sorry folks! That's just the way I see it. So for now, that's curtains!”

But now let's go back in time so you can understand some of the dynamics of everyone involved in this unfortunate conclusion of events.

Ralph Page, the director, actually lives next door to me.

We have been neighbours and friends for nearly five years, ever since he and his family moved in.

He is the Assistant bank manager where I do my banking. He gave me a hard time before lending me the money to build a garage this past spring. That was the first time we had problems between us. We both loved sports, and spent lots of time on the golf course. My wife Diane is a jogger, and she runs with Ralph's wife, Sandra. During the winter, we all play bridge together. Then my daughter, Nora and their daughter, Nataly are the same age, and hang out all the time. And both of them are in the school band, so were involved with this play.

They both play the violin, so they were on my hit list as being off key (as if I knew the difference!

It just seemed like a perfect criticism.)

All the actors I actually had business dealings with, as I was their financial adviser, my day job.

I dealt with Gustav Hornecki a lot when ordering the lumber and the doors and windows for the garage, once Ralph finally approved my loan. He was a nasty man, and very hard to deal with. I particularly had a difficult time with him when the window came in, and was the wrong size.

He would not take it back, saying it was my measurement mistake.

We had quite a battle about it, but he finally agreed to order a new

one. So I was glad to give him a good jab this year with the play.

The high school teachers I had no contact with. It was just that they taught at the same school that my daughter attended. So my criticism at their contributions was nothing personal, but helped with the negative write up.

Miranda Harris, the choreographer, taught my daughter dance. She is a looker, and sure keeps in good shape. I bet she could outrun me and punch me out, if riled. Personally I do not find her that good a dancer or teacher, but my daughter thinks the world of her, so we have kept her in class.

So any one of these people could have had a grudge with my harsh review. But just before I reveal who my killer is, let's describe how the day went, because several things happened leading up to my murder.

It started early on Sunday morning. Just after seven I received an anonymous phone call, warning me of trouble. Not ten minutes later, a brick was thrown through the front window. By the time I got to the window, I just caught a glimpse of a man running down our driveway. Fortunately for me, he just happened to turn his head to look back at the house. I recognized him as Gusstav Hornecki.

Just then Diane and Nora came into the living room to see what had happened. Diane noticed the note laying on the floor, with the brick a few inches away. She picked up the note and read it. A chilling message was written on the paper: 'You SOB – Your turn will come!' Diane asked what this was all about and if I knew who it was. I replied that it was all about my critique of the play at the theatre on Friday night that appeared in my column in Saturday's paper. I concluded by saying they were just too much of a coward to complain to me in person. Diane declared that we should call the police, but I pointed out that they had nothing to work with, and to just drop it.

She begrudgingly agreed.

The next thing to happen was a visit from Ralph and Sandra.

I invited them in. I knew what they were going to say. I braced myself. Diane offered them coffee, but they tersely declined.

They went over to the kitchen counter and leaned against it as Ralph spoke first.

“Boy, I was shocked at your vitriolic condemnation of my play.

We have been friends for so long now, and I thought I knew you, and that you could never be so cruel. You were so involved in the production too, so I never thought you would sabotage our production so viciously. You know this finishes our friendship, and I am going to do all I can to ruin you financially and socially, although I think you have done that part on your own quite well.

Just tell me why you did it. Surely you didn't really mean all those nasty things you wrote about everyone.”

This was the first time I had to confess my motive. I admitted about the job offer, and that I hated my current job, and this Toronto Star job was just too lucrative to pass up, despite burning my bridges behind me.

When I had finished, there was complete silence in the kitchen, except for the hum of the refrigerator. Ralph spoke first.

“Wow, I didn't know this. If

you had just told me beforehand, I could have prepared everyone that it was indeed not personal.

So I guess congratulations are in order. When do you start your new job?”

Diane interjected before I could say anything. “Yes, when were you going to tell your family, Jerry?” I sensed her anger, and it is something you don't want to encounter. She can be as nasty and vicious as anyone I have ever known. I saw the danger I was in.

No matter what I said, it would be taken the wrong way. “The truth of the matter is that the job is not confirmed yet. The Star editor still has to read my review, and then decide if it is good enough to warrant hiring me. That was why I never said anything. I was waiting to hear for sure.”

She nodded and then walked out of the kitchen. Shortly thereafter I heard the bedroom door slam shut. This was not going to be a good day, I could tell.

Then it was my daughter to react.

Trying to hold back tears, she said, “Daddy. You trashed my performance in the band. I know that I was out of tune that night, and I was so upset. How you could do this to me, although you didn't name me directly? I hate you. I sure hope you don't get that job. You don't deserve it!”

She burst into tears and ran out the front door and sat down on the steps, sobbing.

Finally Sandra had her say.

“What a go, Jerry. You've lost some good friends, but even worse, your family. I hope you find it worth it. And I agree with Nora. I hope you don't get the job! Come on, Ralph, let's go.”

They glared at me, and turned and headed out the front door, slamming it shut behind them.

I shuffled my way into the living room, and sat down on my Lazy Boy chair. I sighed, and began to play that scene in my mind. I cursed at myself for how this all went down. It certainly was not how I expected it to go. Part of this was my fault for not coming up with a plan, I now realized.

Shortly after, Diane and Nora came into the living room, and said they were going out for a while to cool off and figure out where things go from here. I looked up at them, and pleaded for them to stay, so we could talk about it together, as a family.

They nodded a no, and said they needed this time alone. They would come back later. They abruptly turned and walked out before I could say anything more.

I was too weary to go after them, but knew it would have done no good.

About half an hour later, I heard a knock at the front door.

I was too tired to get up, so I just called out for whoever it was to come in. I was surprised to see Anne Burton from the library standing in front of me with a pistol aimed right at my chest..

Before I could say anything, she started: “I hope you are satisfied.

You have just ruined my life. I was just on the verge of publishing my first novel. I have spent a lot of money hiring an agent and getting a publisher lined up.

I was supposed to sign all the papers tomorrow, but I just got a call from my agent that they have decided not to go ahead after reading your scathing review of my writing on the play. Thanks a lot....”

And that is where the story began, and now ends.

Hockey Players Of The Week - Seb Chevrier & Joe Huff

Article by Barb Fisher, photo supplied Choosing to defend the net is a huge decision for goalies beginning their minor hockey journey. The score does not reflect goals saved, but as soon as the puck slips by into the net, it is immediately tallied on the scoreboard as a goal against for all to see.

When things go well it is a win for the team, but quite often when things go poorly it is seen as a loss by the goalie.

Not every kid is up for the task and deciding to become a goalie is not for the faint of heart. Our Peewee Travellers' goalies are two of the best Seb Chevrier and Joe Huff who are brave, strong and resilient and continue to build their confidence and believe in themselves.

Seb attends school at Ecole St. Joseph in grade 6 and follows his idol Carey Price with the Montreal Canadiens as his mentor. Seb chooses a healthy, energy boosting pregame meal of pasta because according to Seb, if you eat "crap" you play like "crap". On ice Seb demonstrates a keen eye, lightning reflexes, and stands tough through disappointments, but off ice he still has time for family cuddles.

The best part of the game for Seb is joining something special; playing with his teammates and being part of the hockey family.

Joe attends school at Sir James Dunn in grade 6, and his idol is also Carey Price with the Montreal Canadiens.

Joe is learning and continues to improve as he hones his

skills at the game he loves.

He also eats pasta before the game and has a wardrobe quirk that maybe unique. He has a "lucky dude" shirt that he wears under his equipment.... as long as his team is winning. If the team loses the game, that shirt is switched for another. We all hope that one shirt will do ya for the entire season, Joe! As a proud hockey gramma, I stand in awe at our hockey players who make sure that their goalie is acknowledged with a tap on the pads, win or lose.

At our home games played this weekend against Cochrane all of the players played well and deserve much praise. Peewee games ended in one tie and one win, with the Bantams victorious in both of their games.

Next weekend December 2-3 the Atom and Peewee Travellers are headed to Sudbury to compete in the International Silver Stick tournament, and if Wawa teams win at the Sudbury Regionals they will then be invited to compete in the International Finals in January. Info on these tournaments can be accessed at silverstick.com website. Also next weekend our Novice Travellers will be hitting the road for their NEOHA away games in Porcupine and Chapleau.

CHAPLEAU MALE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT (WAWA, ON) - On Saturday November 25, 2017 at approximately 6:40 am members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Chapleau) Detachment responded to a Chapleau residence regarding a report of an assault. At the scene investigation revealed that a physical altercation had taken place between two males.

As a result Andrew PORTELANCE (27) of Chapleau, Ontario was arrested and charged with: • Adult Assault contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was released from custody and is to appear in Court on February 12, 2018.

CHAPLEAU MALE CHARGED WITH SEVERAL BAIL VIOLATIONS (WAWA, ON) - On Thursday November 23, 2017, at approximately 4:45 pm members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Chapleau) Detachment responded to a local Chapleau address regarding an incident of bail violation. At the scene investigation revealed that a male had been communicating with a female while on conditions not to do so.

As a result a 45 years old Chapleau, Ontario male was arrested and charged with the following offences: • 5 counts of Adult Fail to Comply with Recognizance contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code of Canada The accused was held into custody pending a bail hearing in Timmins Ontario on November 24, 2017.

OPP FESTIVE RIDE SEASON IN FULL SWING (WAWA, ON) - The Superior East Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Festive "Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere" (RIDE) campaign is now in full swing.

It starts on November 24, 2017 and runs to January 2, 2018.

OPP officers will work around the clock during the campaign, conducting RIDE check stops across North East Region.

These enforcement efforts, combined with the help of all citizens, to intervene when they suspect that someone is driving, or about to drive after consuming alcohol or drugs, will prevent innocent lives being lost this holiday season.

Police remind the motoring public to be mindful when approaching a RIDE location.

Officer safety is paramount as they are standing in live lanes of traffic. When you see the flashing lights, slow down, proceed with caution, and allow the offi-

cers a safe distance from your vehicle.

With this RIDE campaign underway, the OPP is determined to dispel the myth that driving while high on drugs cannot be detected by police and is a safe alternative to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Through the OPP Drug Evaluation and Classification Program, officers are trained as Drug Recognition Evaluators (DRU), giving them the authority and tools needed to detect drug-impaired drivers. A charge of impaired by drug involves all drugs, be it prescription, overthe-counter, and those that are illegal.

Impaired by drug is a crime under the Criminal Code of Canada (CC) and drivers who are charged with that offence are subject to the same penalties as those who are charged with driving while impaired by alcohol.

Positive ticketing is helping Youth "Heat" Up this winter (WAWA, ON) - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is proud to be continuing its partnership with Mac's Convenience/Circle K Stores across Ontario again this year for Operation Heat 2017.

OPP Officers will be handing out positive tickets to youth who are spotted committing random acts of kindness or exhibiting "positive" behavior.

These positive tickets are actually coupons valid for a free beverage at all participating Mac's Convenience/Circle K stores across Ontario.

OPP officers will be on the lookout in communities across the province; and when they "catch" a youth participating in an act of kindness the youth will receive a 'thank you' which they will receive in the form of a free "ticket" for hot chocolate.

A youth may receive a "Positive Ticket" from an officer for a number of positive behaviours: • doing a good deed; • participating in community activities; • demonstrating community pride eg. picking up trash and/or; • deterring crime or observing school crossing rules.

Officers can also use the tickets as an "icebreaker" to start a conversation with youth in their patrol areas.
