Valu-Mart Grocery Give-Away Surprises Shoppers

Article & photos by Barb Fisher   Something mysterious was going on at Valu-Mart last Saturday. Signs posted out front "Market Moments - Your Moment Could Be Next", and for the lucky shoppers who were in the store at the right time.....scored with free groceries!   Loblaws, Valu-Mart's parent company offers yearly promotions to enable their participating stores to show appreciation to their customers and engage with the community in delivering moments of surprise, sharing and appreciation. Each year at this time Loblaws randomly select stores to offer the free grocery bonanza, and for two years in a row now, John and Sabrina's Value-Mart has been selected for this promotion. Lucky us! And even better, lucky me - I was one of the more than 20 shoppers who when lining up at the checkout was

startled by a loud siren and air blasters showering us all in paper confetti. Our groceries were free today; up to an individual maximum of $250. For the shoppers who missed out on the grocery give-away, some were still lucky as 15 $10 grocery cards were also handed out. Random acts of customer appreciation continue throughout the year at Valu-Mart, where staff and owners interact with Wawa shoppers sharing random gift cards, coffee, donuts, candy giveaways, free samples and other tokens of appreciation.   When the confetti had settled, everyone could join in with free coffee and donuts, and in true Wawa spirit, many lucky shoppers returned their windfall in random acts of kindness. Some winners decided to follow Cynthia Chiupka-Jozin who plans to donate her cash for groceries to our Food Bank in paying her good fortune forward.   John and Sabrina join with many of our local businesses in supporting worthy causes in our town. Let's all unite in the cause and shop locally. Together we can keep Wawa strong.

Article by Barb Fisher, photos supplied   Emerson, member of the Michipicoten First Nation Band has a mission to immortalize Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women so that their lives will be honoured and not forgotten. Emerson now lives in Sault Ste. Marie, but as a past resident here many Wawa readers know him simply as Emerson. His quest has been influenzed by Gordon Lightfoot's story in song immortalizing the lives cut short of the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald. With Lightfoot's message in song, Emerson has been inspired to erect painted rock formations along our highways to keep the murdered and missing women's spirit forever alive.   The Medicine Wheel symbolizes the interconnection of all life, the cycles of nature, and depicts how life

represents a circular journey. The number 4 is sacred to Aboriginal people and can represent many things, one being the 4 points of the compass, each with a guiding spirit symbolizing the stages in the life journey: • East - Yellow, depicts the direction of the daily birth of the sun and represents a person's birth and early years.

South - Red, relates to childhood and intellectual growth. • West - Black, symbolizes adulthood and introspection. • North - White, represents old age, wisdom and the spiritual aspects of life. • the Centre of the wheel is symbolic of Mother Earth and the Creator and their role in the beginning and continuation of life.   In painting the rocks yellow, red, black and white, Emerson thought about the sacred colours representing these women who were someone's Infant, then Youth, but then denied their maturity to the Adult helper, and to achieve the pinnacle of a kind knowledgeable Elder. By forming these grandfather rock formations in the 4 sacred colours perched high above our highways, travellers motoring across our country will be mindful of what we have lost. Emerson was in our area recently, building his monuments along highway #17 with members of the Michipicoten First Nation present offering prayers and encouragement in his quest. He has erected the rock formations along many of our major highways - #17, #69 east and south, with his final dream to have these rock remembrances erected from coast to coast across Canada.   Emerson extends much thanks to Canadian Tire in Wawa for donating the paint to continue his journey, and appreciates everyone's support, encouragement and prayers in his quest.
