Angela & Rob Schumacher, Home Building Centre: Outstanding Corporate Sponsors Article & photo by Barb Fisher Again a great turnout of conservation minded folk packed the Community Centre this past weekend in support of the Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC's) 29th fun-draiser, dug deep into their pockets, and oh yeh, had a great time doing it! DU Canada has been delivering its habitat conservation program across Ontario since 1974, and since that time have completed more than 3,628 habitat projects across the province, and have conserved almost one million acres of wetlands to date. There are over 20,000 passionate supporters and nearly 1,200 dedicated volunteers committed to the cause - conservation of at-risk wetlands.

Wetlands are our best chance for enjoying a future

with clean air, pristine water, and green spaces. Wetlands remove excess nutrients and pollutants from our waterways, store carbon which would otherwise add to climate change, and provide a buffer from high tides and storm surges that threaten to flood our communities. Ontario currently accounts for about 25% of all wetlands in Canada and 6% of all the wetlands in the world. It is estimated that peatlands in our Boreal Forest annually sequester an amount of carbon equal to about 1/3 of Ontario's total carbon emissions. Investment in wetland conservation is crucial as it could keep costs on various services such as water filtration, food mitigation and soil retention lower than if man-made infrastructure were used. For example wetlands

intercept rainfall and filter pollutants from the water making Ontarions less dependent on storm water and water treatment infrastructure. Wetlands can provide flood attenuation services helping us to adapt to more frequent extreme weather events resulting from climate change. So in short, it's not all about the ducks; its about our continued existence on our planet.

Now back to the party. I checked out the display of goodies lining the walls of the hall and was amazed at the variety of prizes offered. Ducks Unlimited Holds Annual Fundraiser ...Article Continued from Front Page Robert kept the momentum moving explaining just how the fundraiser helps in our own town. It is important to stress that most of the dollars generated during the evening go back into our community to help initiatives in our boreal forest management, community supports including hospital and medical care, Legion interests, and other community causes. In addition to the donated items, much of the expense incurred is paid back to local providers and many of the prizes are purchased from local businesses.

The prizes to be won were fantastic. Even for a very modest outlay, one had a chance to win one of the top prizes offered, and for the more aggressive bidder the Silent and Live Auction offered fantastic limited edition prints by well reknown artists and other collectibles. Tier prizes: In for a Fin, Lucky Duck, Pick of the Litter, High Flyer, Heads & Tales, and possibly the most coveted of all, the Firearms Frenzy kept everyone checking their finances in keeping the momentum going. It was time for Vernon Bailey, the animated and enthusiastic auctioneer for the night to urge people to raise their arms in getting those bids rolling in the live auction segment, and everyone got on board contributing to the spirit and success of the evening. The prize extravaganza wrapped up with the Tier Prize draws which assured that over the evening most everyone went home with a great prize.

“It is unfortunate that seniors are often the target of cyber scams. Recognizing this vulnerability, we are pleased to team up with the Canada Safety Council to help empower them to stay safe online,” said Nimtaz Kanji, Director, TELUS Wise. “Providing seniors with online safety tips and information will allow them to participate in our digital world without fear, and enable them to take advantage of the positive benefits technology has to offer.”

Here are five other useful tips to keep your information out of the wrong hands: 1. Limit what you share online; do not give out your social insurance number online under any circumstances.

Second World War Veteran Reflects On War Amps 100 Years Of “Amputees Helping Amputees”

Charlie Jefferson passes down the advice he learned from fellow amputee veterans to members of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program.

On November 11, Second World War veteran Charlie Jefferson will not only be thinking of all those who have served and continue to serve on behalf of Canada, he will also be reflecting on the 100th anniversary of The War Amps, an organization which has supported him and generations of amputees.

In March 1945, Jefferson was serving as a Lieutenant with the Queen’s Own Rifles Regiment in the Rhine Valley, Germany.

He was injured by an anti-personnel mine explosion, resulting in the loss of his left leg below the knee.

The War Amps was started in 1918 by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other in adapting to their new reality as amputees. They then welcomed amputee veterans following the Second World War, like Jefferson, sharing all that they had learned, as well as starting the Key Tag Service to allow these new members to gain meaningful employment and provide a service to the public.

Jefferson says that he gained practical advice from fellow amputee veterans, like how to protect the skin on his stump from blisters. He adds that the moral support he received was just as important. “It became easier to accept your amputation and helped make the most of what you’ve got left,” says

Jefferson.

This peer support was then passed on to a new generation.

In 1975, war amputee veterans recognized that their knowledge and experience could help others so they started The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides financial assistance for the cost of artificial limbs and regional seminars to young amputees.

When war amputee veterans started The War Amps, they could not have predicted that their founding principle of “amputees helping amputees” would still be going strong 100 years later. Thanks to the public’s continuing support of the Key Tag Service, The War Amps vital programs for amputees across Canada will carry on long into its second century.

Hypoglycemia Article by Jenelle McAuley, RD, BScAHN November is Diabetes Awareness Month. During this month, the Diabetes Education Program will be providing articles on topics to help in the management of diabetes. The topics include hypoglycemia, foot care, healthy eating and physical activity, and sick day management.

Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a concern for those living with diabetes. Some medication can increase the risk of hypoglycemia, as can skipping or delaying a meal, being more physically active than normal or eating fewer carbohydrates than planned. Signs of low blood sugar can be different for everyone.

Some typical symptoms include feeling tired, anxious, dizzy, confused, sweaty, headache, changes in vision, and hunger. If you have any of these symptoms it is important to check your blood sugar. If you do not have a monitor nearby, it is best to assume your blood sugar is low and treat it anyways. A blood sugar below 4.0 mmol/L is considered a low blood sugar, however some individuals may experience these symptoms at a higher reading, it all depends on your body.

Low blood sugar is treated by taking 15 grams of fast acting sugar, which could be 4 Dex 4 tablets, 1 tablespoon of honey, 2/3 cup of juice or regular pop, 1 tablespoon sugar in water or 6 lifesavers. Try to avoid using things like chocolate, cake, muf-

fins, or chips to treat a low blood sugar. These things take longer to be broken down into sugar in our bodies.

One you have treated your low blood sugar it is recommended you wait 15 minutes and check your blood sugar again to be sure your treatment has worked.

If your blood sugar is still low you should treat again. If your treatment has been successful it is important you follow up your treatment with a snack if your next meal is more than 1 hour away. The snack should include and carbohydrate and a protein such as crackers & cheese, or bread with peanut butter. If you next meal is within the next hour a snack is not required.

It is important to wait 40 minutes before getting behind the wheel after having a low blood sugar. Your blood sugar should also have responded to treatment and be above 5.0 mmol/L. The Proposed Project Prodigy Gold Incorporated, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Argonaut Gold Incorporated, is proposing the construction, operation, decommissioning and abandonment of an open-pit gold mine and metal mill located14 kilometres south-east of Dubreuilville, Ontario. Mining would occur over 10 years with an ore production capacity of 45 200 tonnes per day. The on-site metal mill would have an ore input capacity of 35 000 tonnes per day and would operate for approximately 12 to 15 years.

National Senior Safety Week – Three Common Scams & Critical Thinking Technology offers many benefits and advantages, but sadly some users have nefarious objectives and use technology to prey on vulnerable members of our community, including seniors.

In the context of 2018’s National Senior Safety Week, held November 6 – 12, the Canada Safety Council and TELUS want you to be vigilant and on the lookout for these five most common types of scams that can impact seniors.

1.

Identity theft The ultimate objective of identity theft is financial gain.

Scammers will search online and/or try to obtain private information including but not limited to addresses, phone numbers, personal email addresses and birth dates. They may also try to gain unauthorized access to online accounts.

In addition to using strong passwords (or even better, passphrases) the best way to avoid becoming a victim is to be very selective about the information you share. Before providing any information online or even over the phone, consider the rationale for the request and check the organization’s privacy policy for insight into why they need your data, what they plan to do with it and who will have access to it. Keep in mind that the same information can be used for different purposes by different organizations. For instance, Facebook may ask for your birth date to let your friends know it’s your birthday, however your bank might use this same information to verify that you are the owner of your account.

2.

Online dating Seniors who engage in online dating need to be wary of catfishing, a process by which scammers pretend to be someone they’re not in order to gain another person’s trust.

If you want to try online dating, do your research and sign up for a reputable dating website. Protect your privacy by using an email address reserved exclusively for your online dating profile and remember not to include private information in your profile.

Further, be mindful that anyone can create a dating profile and that photos and even webcam footage can be falsified. Exercise the appropri-

ate amount of skepticism and judgment when talking with someone online and be wary of those who work to gain your trust quickly, only to ask for financial help. Do not transfer money to individuals you meet online regardless of what situation they claim to be in – once you’ve sent it, it is almost impossible to get it back.

If you connect well with someone, consider meeting in person (in a public place) to confirm they are who they say they are, before the relationship progresses further. Be wary of chatting with individuals who claim to be from another country as it’s much harder to confirm their identity. If they avoid meetings or come up with excuses, it could be a red flag.

3. Phishing Phishing is the fraudulent practice of sending illegitimate emails that appear to be from reputable organizations, when in fact they are not. The intent is to trick recipients into providing private information.

Telltale signs of emails of this nature include typos, grammatical errors, threats and ultimatums. Be suspicious of messages claiming to be urgent in nature with deadlines for action. Some messages demand an immediate response, relying on the would-be victim to call first and ask questions later.

Always take the time to do your research and remember, banks, phone companies and government agencies will not ask you to share private information over email, text or via an unsolicited phone call.

Always double-check the sender’s email address, even if the name is recognizable.

Often, phishing-related email addresses contain a long string of letters or digits, or contain names that are slightly misspelled or otherwise altered. If there are any links within the message, do not click on them until you’re certain the email is legitimate – and even then, confirm that the link is legitimate by hovering your mouse over it to see the destination.

4.

Tech support popups This type of scam occurs via a pop-up window claiming you have a virus on your device.

These windows offer a phone

number to call for technical support, but the “solution” often involves payment for a fix or allowing the scammers remote access to your device.

Avoid this problem by ensuring you have anti-virus software installed on your device, and only browsing and downloading from trusted websites.

If you see such a notice and can’t close it down, don’t call the number displayed; instead, bring your computer to a trusted technician who can help remove any malware or viruses.

5.

Lottery winnings and sweepstakes If you receive a message (or phone call) about winning the lottery or a sweepstakes prize, it’s likely a scam - especially when you haven’t entered any contests. Delete messages like this right away and do not click on any links.

If you did enter a lottery or sweepstakes, pay careful attention to the source of the message and consider the following questions to confirm validity: • Did the message come from the same organization that offered the contest?

• Is there mention of the specific contest you entered?

• Does the message address you by name?

If your answer to these questions is ‘no,’ it’s likely a scam and it may be wise to delete the message.

Staying informed and knowledgeable about possible threats can help you use the Internet and all it affords us with greater confidence. Visit the Canada Safety Council’s website for more safety information and a showcase of safety through the century as the organization celebrates 100 years in safety.

You can also take advantage of TELUS Wise, a free digital safety education program, offering Canadians of all ages interactive and informative workshops and resources.

Remembrance Day - Paying Tribute To The Canadian Forestry Corps Article By Derek Nighbor

On November 11th, Canadians will pay tribute to the men and women who have served our country during times of conflict and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice – in order for all of us to enjoy the freedoms we have today.

What many people may not be aware of is the story of the Canadian Forestry Corps, which made a significant contribution to Allied efforts during the First and Second World Wars – but one which is often overlooked.

The Forestry Corps was created during the First World War when it was discovered that huge quantities of wood were needed on the Western Front.

The forest products industry was a dominating economic force in Canada’s early history and the British Government quickly discovered there was nobody more experienced or qualified to harvest timber than Canadians. In 1916, British Colonial Secretary, Andrew Bonar Law, made a request of the Governor General of Canada to deploy Canadian lumbermen to aid in the cutting and processing of timber.

Later that year, the Canadian Forestry Corps was created.

At the time, Canada shipped processed timber across the Atlantic to Britain. However, due to the high risk of travelling overseas from German U-boats, it was deemed safer to bring the manpower to work in the forests of Britain and continental Europe.

Approximately 24,000 men served as part of the Forestry Corps in various parts of Europe, producing lumber forbarracks, trenches, bridges and railway beds - to build crates for food and ammunition - and sadly, to construct coffins.

By the end of the war, the Corps had produced approximately 85,000 tonnes of round timber, 260 million board feet of lumber, and over 200,000 tons of fuel and slabs.

Besides producing lumber, the Corps was also trained

as infantry and occasionally served on the front lines to assist in the quick construction of rail and road systems in the wake of attacking troops. On one occasion, when a request was made for 500 men to join infantry duty, records show that almost 1300 volunteered.

By the time the offensive had been halted, a large number of Corps members had served in some capacity on the front lines.

When the Corps was disbanded in 1920 at the end of the war, it is estimated they were responsible for 70% of all lumber that had been used

by Allied forces.

In 1940, the Canadian Forestry Corps was re-established in response to the start of WWII to play the same role.

Once again, thousands of volunteers came forward, many of them veterans of the First World War. Thirty companies were drawn from all regions of Canada, including Quebec.

Altogether about 7,000 men were deployed to Scotland.

As we mark Remembrance Day, let’s pause and honour the many contributions and the ultimate sacrifice made by so many – and have touched the lives of all Canadians, regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, or social class.

The Canadian Forestry Corps was made up of men who went from the back bushes of rural Canada to the front lines of war – and to all of them and their families and loved ones, we owe a debt of gratitude.

The Mystery Of The 'November Gale'

Author's Note: This story is in commemoration of the sinking of the 'Edmund Fitzgerald' on November 10/75.-- I – Jim White's entry: In a recent book I read about marine disasters on Lake Superior, there are several entries regarding the 'November Gale' that makes me wonder if it was an unlucky freighter. That included a collision with another freighter, ramming a dock in Duluth, Minnesota, critical electrical failures and water leakage in the hull that took it out of service for nearly two months . All these incidents occurred over a one year span, starting with it's launching on November 10, 1975.

II – This is an excerpt of the log by Captain Peter McSweeny of the 'November Gale', one of our fleet of ships on the Great Lakes, received by radio today: It is the third day on the Lake Superior section of this particular delivery run on this 10th day of November, 2005. The lake has been rough all night, and I have not had a good night's sleep.

I had been at the helm when just ahead there appeared a fog bank.

I quickly checked my instruments to make sure they were all working. I was surprised at seeing this fog because none of the weather

forecasts had indicated this as occurring. It is also rare to have fog in November. Besides, it is more likely to occur in calm waters. I took a deep breath as we were gobbled up. I had tried to radio for an update on how widespread this bank was going to be. To my surprise all I got was static. I checked my compass bearings, and it showed that our freighter had veered forty degrees to the south from where we had entered the fog bank. How could this of happened, I wondered. I had kept a firm grip on the wheel.

It had not shifted at all. I tried turning the ship back to its' previous bearing, but the wheel would not budge. I began to sweat. I just had to let the ship take its' own course. I could feel the fog rolling into my lungs with every breathe I took. It had a rotten fish smell and taste. I began really gasping for air. I was on the verge of blacking out when just like that – the fog began receding.

At that moment our radio and instruments all came back to life.

The captain of the 'Canadiana' advised that he was heading west,

A Remembrance Day Mystery Here is the story that the Wawa Mystery Story Club created at their meeting held on November 7/18. The theme that they worked on was about Remembrance Day on November 11th.: Vincent O'Leary was 85 years old this year. He was been in the town's only nursing home for over a year now, after the death of his wife. She had been his rock, and caregiver, despite being 80 years old. Vincent's health deteriorated dramatically after that.

It was arranged to move him into the Home. Surprisingly he agreed to this without an argument. His mind was sharp and he could assess his situation as well as the rest of the family.

He was confined to bed, thanks to the ravages of time and war.

Arthritis wrecked his joints, and the pain was excruciating for him, despite all the medication that he was given. A stroke two years ago left his legs paralyzed. and wheelchair bound. The shrapnel that was still in him added to his misery. He always kidded everybody that he was a walking weather station, and could always predict when a storm was coming, within fifteen minutes of its' arrival. The nurses smiled as he told them this every day. He was always in a happy mood, despite all the pain that they knew he was in. He was just one of those gentle souls that there were never enough of. He never complained.

He never talked about his war experiences and subsequent injuries, except on Remembrance Day each November 11th.

He always kidded that he got the shrapnel injury in a non combat situation. He was returning to

the bombed-out house that acted as the temporary headquarters for the Allied troops in this recently captured area of Holland, from the local pub, with a keg of beer when he stepped into the doodoo, ie the shrapnel. He declared that he didn't know which hurt more – the immediate pain of the shrapnel burrowing into his legs and abdomen, or losing a whole keg of beer. He chuckled as he explained that trying to drink up as much of the beer as he could before it washed down into the gutter sure kept his mind off the pain. He added that he was sure glad there were no photos of the incident. It wouldn't have looked good for him or the 'brass'. And he concluded with the comment that he was thankful there wasn't all this i-pad, twitter, Facebook, Instagram and all this new technology stuff back then, like today where a picture can be taken and then be posted and gone worldwide within minutes of it happening. Everyone always enjoyed this anecdote. They could just picture the scene, and agreed about the social media aspect.

Back in September at the monthly meeting, it was announced that he was going to receive a special honour at the November Remembrance Day ceremony. Everyone agreed that it was well deserved, and long overdue. Despite his modest claims his dedicated work over the years at the local and District levels was well known.

His son, Gord, had agreed to make sure he was up, dressed and ready to be picked up so he could attend the parade in the senior's van sponsored by the

but spoke of a warning of a whopper of a storm brewing near Sault Ste. Marie. The lake is churning already, and expect huge waves by tonight. He recommended I hug the shore and get to the Soo asap. He ended with the standard Over and out.' We sailed away in our separate directions.

I told the crew of what was to come. The crew all laughed nervously. These gales of November are dangerous, the oldtimers warned the younger ones. It was nothing to laugh it. Hopefully it's not a premonition of the future, another of the older crew members commented. Several of the other crew members scoffed at his doom and gloom statements.

They didn't want to tempt fate!

They kept a close eye on the skies and the Lake all day. All seemed relatively calm, with just the usual waves that were always rolling on such a big lake at first. But it got worse as the day went on.

My second in command, Steven Mallory, came behind me to my cabin. He suggested that he take over the helm for today. I took his advice.

After he left, I opened a new bottle of Captain Morgan's best rum, and took a few swigs. Then I made myself a proper rum and coke. Then had another. I stared at my desk for the longest time, in a thoughtful state, knowing that I have to write something in this log.

III - Our marine office got a

radio transmission from Captain McSweeny in the early evening: “It is now seven o'clock, and the Lake is really churning up. The 'Canadiana' captain sure wasn't kidding when he warned me about this pending storm. The rain is pelting down. I have taken over command from Mallory, just until we get to port in the Soo. I can hardly see out the windows, and the waves are the highest that I have ever seen. Our carrier is aptly named today. I can hardly keep my hands on the wheel. I don't know if we'll make it.” A pause. Then “ I am giving control back to Mallory while I finish this report. Wait, I see another ship in the distance. I'm going to radio her. Stand by.” After a couple of minutes, I am resuming this radio transmission. “It's a carrier named the 'Edmund Fitzgerald'.

They are in trouble too, like us.

This is the worst storm I have ever seen. I am going to follow her to the Soo. Oh, no I have lost sight of her. The lights have gone out, and they have not come up from that last deep wave. I'll have to rely on my instruments now.

Hope they hold. Over and out.

God help us!!!!”

IV- That was the last we heard from him. They never did get to port, as he had feared might happen. The ship has disappeared without a trace, along with Captain McSweeny and all his crew. The 'Edmund Fitzgerald' also was lost. Maybe it wasn't a

good idea for our ship to follow it so closely.....

A point of confusion has just arisen. Our marine division president has pointed out that it sank on Nov. 10, 1975! It could not have been that ship that Captain McSweeny said he was going to follow to the Soo. We have verified with the radio operator who received the transmission that the name was correct. How could that be, then? A ghost ship from the past leading our ship along the same path to disaster?

Impossible!?

It has been pointed out that the 'Ed Fitz', was discovered years later about 20 miles off Whitefish Point, but the crew have never been found.. It appears that our crew have suffered the same fate.

Chalk up another one for Lake Superior, oh great Gitche Gumee!

Like the Gordon Lightfoot song later said, 'Lake Superior never gives up its' dead, when the gales of November come early.'

I am including this transcript of his radioed report that will be part of our files, as the ongoing search and subsequent investigation continues until the matter is finally resolved. Such a mystery around a doomed carrier.

Maybe we should have retired it years ago. Now it is too late....

Red Cross and then to the high school auditorium for the service this November 11th, 2010.

He arrived at the Home about nine that morning. The nurses had already fed him, and bathed him. He brought his Legion uniform and service pins. He had retrieved them from the closet at his home where he kept some of the things that his father needed and mementos that he wanted to keep, such as old photos and Legion pins.

It was a struggle to get him dressed while he sat on the edge of the bed, and then getting him into his wheelchair. However, it was finally done. He told his father that he would be back in just a few minutes. He wanted to pop in and see one of his buddies' father who had recently been admitted to this Home. He was sick with pneumonia. He just wanted to say hi, then go and check to see if the van was here yet.

He was gone about ten minutes.

When he entered the room, his father was not there. He looked around in disbelief. Then he checked the washroom. He wasn't there either. He became frantic, as he rushed down to the nurses' station. There was no one there, so he headed down the hall, looking in every room to see if maybe he had gone to visit any of the other patients. He was not in any of them. He ran into the janitor who was mopping the floor in the lobby. He told him that yes he had seen a man being wheeled out just a minute ago. However he didn't get a good look at who was taking him out. It was a routine event, so he didn't pay much attention. After pressing, the janitor described the person as being

a tall man. He was wearing gray slacks and a navy blue jacket. He didn't get a look at the face, but said he looked old, just like the guy in the wheelchair.

From that Gord surmised he was a Legion member. He ran out of the lobby into the parking lot, searching desperately to see if he could see them. They weren't there. Then he noticed a van driving out onto the street, and turning towards downtown.

Gord ran to his car, and went to get in and chase after them. But it was locked. He realized that he wasn't wearing his jacket. It was still back in his father's room.

He remembered laying it on the bed. He couldn't believe it when he got to the room, and the jacket was gone, along with the car and house keys too. He swore and clenched his fists in anger and worry.

He looked at his watch. It was just about ten. He hurried back to the nurses station, and asked to use the phone. He hoped his wife, Tina would still be at home.

He needed her to get the spare set of keys and bring them to him.

He was in luck.

He went back to the lobby to wait for her. He paced back and forth. Then about 10:15 he saw the Senior's van pull up. He asked the driver if his father was in it.

After he asked, he realized how stupid that was. Why would it be here to pick him up, if he was already in the van? Frustrated at the dead end here, he sat down on one of the chairs, to wait for Tina.

Slowly he calmed down enough to begin thinking more rationally.

Somebody had picked him up.

Maybe it was one of his Legion buddies that didn't know that I was doing it. A name popped

up - Gerald Bensen. He was his father's age, and still drove his car. He was sharp as a tack too, like his father. Gord went back to the nurses station and called his senior's apartment. His wife, Emily, finally answered the phone. She told him that he had already left for the Legion Hall to get in line for the parade. He asked her if Gerald was picking up his father on the way. She was uncertain, but replied that she didn't think so. He then explained that somebody had 'kidnapped' him from the hospital.

He was desperately trying to find out where he was taken, and by whom......

The group has cleverly detailed how and where they found Vincent and Gerald. He was not kidnapped, but taken to the Legion Hall for a few shots of whiskey to calm him down before the ceremony. Gerald knew how nervous Vincent would be., since they were best friends. That was all – very innocent. And Gord''s jacket had been taken because Gerald thought it was Vincent's.

Then during the ceremony he stood beside the wheelchair, patting his shoulder for comfort, and when the time came to present the award, it was Gerald that wheeled him up.

It was a touching story, and somber enough to befit the importance of the day for all veterans.

Special guest speaker Tammy Paterson from the Soo gave a very passionate description of her business adventure "The Queen's Tarts" and held nothing back in describing the many trials associated with starting your own business, and the tribulations that make it all worthwhile. Tammy started her baking business very modestly offering a few dozen tarts of limited flavours at the Soo Farmers' Market, and due to the popularity of her culinary gift has since expanded her enterprise to a full time

baking experience, presenting her tarts to festivals and fairs all over Ontario. She truthfully admits that the journey has hit rough patches with juggling family responsibilities, and at first a full time day job, with her essentially one-woman enterprise. Tammy described how she has learned to upsize production over the months without compromising the quality of her product. In part she attributes the consumer popularity of her creations to attractive, simple labelling offering a variety of flavours, and most importantly, having enough stock to keep her display full at all times. Tammy is truly an inspiration of what we can accomplish; another woman on the move.

Maury thanked everyone who made the event possible: well informed speakers, Legion Women's Auxiliary for preparing the delicious Tea Party eats, Keith for tending the bar, Tracy Amos for funding the meal, Sandra Weitzel for donating a door prize; the very classy high heeled shoes, Katy for donating various other prize goodies, Tammy's selection of "The Queen's Tarts", Heidi McLaren for decorating the tables with flower arrangements that have given her the reputation as an entrepreneur with class, and EDC's Jesse Labonte who organized and set the event in motion. After 3 Years Of No Service: Time For Feds To Finally Re-Fund Algoma Passenger Train It’s been 3 long years now since there was passenger train service on the Algoma Central Railway (CN) between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst. CN has hinted on several occasions that it is a freight operation and is not interested in passenger trains. In the interim though, the Missanabie Cree First Nation has applied for and obtained all the necessary requirements to re-introduce service but lack the funding assistance from the Federal Government to institute this service. What a shame!

Businesses in the region have suffered losses and include hotels, motels, restaurants, lodges and the retail sector. Communities and First Nations approximate to the line have also been affected.

BDO Canada’s ‘Economic Impact Analysis’ of April 2014 reported the total, annual, economic impact associated with the Algoma Central passenger rail service to be in the realm of $38 to 48 million. This service is so important to the region.

The Government has not

budged on their premise that the ACR service does not meet Transport Canada’s criteria of a ‘remote’ service. That is pure hogwash! According to the same BDO study, of the more than 600 owned properties along the line, those with rail only access total 448.

BDO reported that the value of these properties averaged $60,000 each for an overall value exceeding $28 million.

That’s not chump change!

The majority of these owners cannot get to their properties without undue risk and many do not even have passable industrial roads (eg. Oba Lake). Most of these roads are not maintained and have illegal water crossings (temporary structures) that are subject to frequent washouts. How can these situations not be considered remote?

Many of the owners are seniors and/or retirees who worked all their lives to build these cabins and cottages knowing full well at the time they would have train access to these properties. But now many don’t and Transport

Canada hasn’t moved from their position even though they subsidize a similar service from Sudbury to White River through VIA Rail. How is this fair?

Several lodges along the rail line have witnessed as much as a 40% drop recently in clientele because there is no rail access and float plane access is not a preferred option. One lodge had such a poor year in 2018 that it is considering closing for good.

It’s time our Government developed a new transportation policy that supports and promotes rail, passenger services across this land.

Transport Canada’s only focus today is on rail safety which is important but not the only issue. Passenger trains are an essential service and need to be encouraged.

If our country can give over $9 billion to some 3rd world countries then surely they can find a few million to support a restored ACR passenger train (Bear Train) that is sorely needed.

Harte Gold Announces Final Closing Of Flow-Through Private Placement Toronto – October 31, 2018 - HARTE GOLD CORP. (“Harte Gold” or the “Company”) (TSX: HRT / OTC: HRTFF / Frankfurt: H4O) announced it has raised gross proceeds of $6,951,360 including $1,084,400 pursuant to the closing today (initial closing October 22, 2018) of its non-brokered private placement of flow-through shares (“FT Shares”). Harte Gold issued a total of 13,368,000 FT Shares priced at $0.52 per FT Share.

Finder’s fees payable under the private placement consist of a cash payment equal to 5% of cash raised and that number of common share purchase warrants equal to 5% of the number of Shares issued in connection with certain orders, for a total of $61,526 and 118,319 warrants. Finder’s warrants are exercisable at $0.52 for a period of eighteen (18) months from closing.

Proceeds from the private placement will fund exploration work on the Company’s Sugar Zone and Stoughton

Abitibi properties.

Gold analysis is performed by fire assay using atomic absorption, gravimetric or pulp metallic finish. The Mineral Resource Estimate was prepared in compliance with NI 43-101 guidelines. Robert Kusins, P. Geo., Harte Gold’s Senior Mineral Resource geologist, is the Company’s Qualified Person and has prepared, supervised the preparation, or approved the scientific and technical disclosure in this news release.

FALLEN SOLDIERS. Poppy The Poppy is the international symbol of remembrance representing a visual pledge to pay homage to the fallen, who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the preservation of peace and freedom.

The person who first introduced the Poppy to Canada and the Commonwealth was Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae of Guelph, Ontario, a Canadian Medical Officer during the First World War. John McCrae penned the Poem “In Flanders Fields” on a scrap of paper in May, 1915 on the day following the death of a fellow soldier. Little did he know then that those 13 lines would become enshrined in the hearts and minds of all who would wear them. McCrae’s poem was published in Punch Magazine in December of that same year, and the poem later served as inspiration three years later for Moina Michael, an American teacher.

Moina Michael made a pledge to always wear a Poppy as a sign of Remembrance.

Thanks to the millions of Canadians who wear the Legion’s lapel Poppy each November, the little red flower has never died, and the memories of those who fell in battle remain strong.

The poppy should be worn during the Remembrance period, from the last Friday in October until November 11. The Legion encourages the wearing of Poppies at funerals of Veterans, and for any commemorative event such as a memorial service, or the anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. As well, it is not inappropriate to wear a Poppy during other times to commemorate Fallen Veterans and it is an individual choice to do so.

While Poppies are always free, The Royal Canadian Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund, which directly supports Canada’s Veterans and their families in need.
