Lemonade Stand Sales Help Wawa Food Bank

Both Kindergarten classes at Ecole Saint-Joseph, from Mme Gendron and Mme Samson made lemonade from scratch, along with the signs and had a lemonade stand at Queens park.

Together they raised a profit of $208.60. With the money raised, they will go to ValuMart and buy food for the local food bank.

The children learn from a young age to think of others in their community.

INSPECTION Inspection of Approved Slash Pile Burning White River Forest The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invites you to inspect the MNRF-approved prescribed burn plan for slash pile burning that will be carried out in the White River Forest (see map).

As part of our ongoing efforts to regenerate and protect Ontario’s forests, some recently harvested areas have been selected to be burned under the strict guidelines of the MNRF Prescribed Burn Planning Manual. The prescribed burn will reduce the area covered in slash piles while increasing the area available for regeneration and reducing the fire hazard.

The burn is scheduled for ignition between October 23, 2017 and November 6, 2017.

Information about this prescribed burn project, including specific locations and maps is available for public viewing at the offices of Jackfish River Management Ltd. during normal business hours and the MNRF public website at ontario.ca/forestplans beginning April 1, 2017. The ServiceOntario Centre in Toronto and the MNRF Wawa District Office provide Internet access. October is Ontario Community Support Association Month. In Wawa we have several community support programs that help the frail elderly stay in their homes longer. October 1st – 7th highlights Meals on Wheels week!

If you are a senior, an adult recovering from an illness, or a physically or mentally challenged individual, then you qualify for the Canadian Red Cross Meals on Wheels program. Do you find it a challenge to drive or walk to the grocery store for regular shopping trips? Is the constant cleaning up after cooking just one meal getting to you? Chances are if you are living alone, preparing wellbalanced meals for yourself is easier to put off than if you are preparing a meal for others. Seniors often eat what is handy, which is fine if it meets your daily nutritional requirements. Washing, cutting and chopping fresh produce, getting the right protein portions and ensuring the pots and

pans are cleaned afterward can be a real task if you are a senior.

The Meals on Wheels program has provided Seniors in Wawa with hot nutritious meals for seventeen years now.

The Frozen menu option was added in the spring of 2000 to offset the days hot meals are not delivered. Hot meals are prepared at the Lady Dunn Health Center and provide carefully planned menus that help sustain a well balanced diet. Meals include; soup, bun, salad, and an entree that has the 3 basic requirements; protein, starch and vegetables.

Of course no meal would be complete without all the condiments and a dessert. This meal is substantial, with many people enjoying the soup and salad for lunch and the entree for dinner. Meals are delivered by volunteers at 11:30 Monday to Friday.

The Frozen Menu Option is also carefully planned and prepared especially for seniors. They are low sodium, suitable for diabetics, and

provide for 40% of a seniors daily calorie requirement and 50% of the daily protein requirement. These meals can be ordered anytime, by calling the Coordinator, Darlene Trovarello.

Perhaps you know a neighbour or family member who could benefit from this service. The Red Cross has many ways this service can be provided. It can be billed to a family member who wishes to provide this service for their parent who may not even live in the same town or province. Gift certificates are available also, and make great Christmas gifts for those parents who have everything!

We are so impressed with our meals from the Lady Dunn Kitchen we know you will be too. So, we want everyone to try it at least once. Whether you are a previous client, or have never tried our meals, now is the time. Just call 856-1964 if you or someone you know could benefit from these fabulous meals.

In recognition of World Sight Day (October 12), the CNIB Eye Van is celebrating 45 years on the road in Northern Ontario.

In partnership with the Ontario Medical Association and the Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the CNIB Eye Van was established in 1972 as part of the Prevention of Blindness program. Staffed by two ophthalmic assistants and ophthalmologists, the fully-equipped medical mobile eye care clinic on wheels travels more than 6,000 kilometres each year, visiting 30 communities to provide service for more than 4,500 patients.

The on-board ophthalmologists conduct vision exams, treat eye conditions, perform minor surgeries, and offer much-needed medical advice and information about eye health. Ninety per cent of the patients screened on the CNIB Eye Van are diagnosed with an eye condition that could lead to blindness, if left untreated. While this is milestone year for one of CNIB’s jewels, it wouldn’t be the successful program that it is without the phenomenal support of our partners, including the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Ontario Medical Association, the Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Royal Canadian Legions, Sun Life Financial, Goldcorp Inc. and other corporate and individual donors, and community groups. And, CNIB has always been an organization of people helping people – nowhere is that more evident than in the incredible work of more than 300 volunteers.

October Is Child Abuse Prevention Month: Your Call To Children’s Aid Could Be The Most Important In A Child’s Life October is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and this year the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies and Children’s Aid Societies will raise awareness about the importance of calling Children’s Aid with concerns about the safety or well-being of a child or youth. This year’s campaign will specifically highlight the devastating impact neglect—which is classified as a type of abuse— can have on a child.

“A child who is neglected is consistently not having their vital needs met. That could mean poor nutrition, lack of attention to hygiene, or unattended physical and medical needs,” says Mary Ballantyne, CEO of OACAS. “From a child welfare perspective, neglect is a concern because it ultimately affects a child’s ability to thrive.”

Child neglect can be difficult to assess, as harm caused by the absence of something is not always readily apparent.

Child neglect can be caused by the inability of parents or caregivers to meet a child’s basic needs, including food, shelter, clothing, education, supervision, medical care, and safe surroundings.

Provincial research shows that approximately 90 percent of the children that receive protection services from Children’s Aid live in families that are struggling with chronic needs such as poverty, mental health, and addiction. It's important to understand that although poverty can be a risk factor for both neglect and abuse, children are also abused or neglected in families with higher socioeconomic status. So every community has an important role to play in helping to prevent incidences of neglect

“Unfortunately, many people worry that their call to Children’s Aid will lead to splitting up a family, however, most of the time that is not what happens,” says Mary Ballantyne, CEO of OACAS. Ontario’s leading research study on child abuse and neglect shows children remained with their families in 97% of CAS investigations, a statistic that comes as a surprise to many people.

Ontario’s child welfare system focuses the majority of its work on in-home, early intervention services, based on the recognition that early intervention can reduce the need for more intrusive services later. Children’s Aid supports include in-home visits from child welfare workers, and access to helpful services such as counselling, parenting workshops, and substance use programs.

The 'Who Really Killed Moira?' Mystery Professor John Gray of the 'Mystery Stories Clubs of Canada' here in Wawa. It's time for the monthly meeting of the Wawa club on this night of Tuesday, October 10th, 2017.

We are meeting at the home of the President, Evelyn Devereaux.

At 7:30 we were settling down to begin. I could smell the coffee in the kitchen, and I was sure Evelyn had outdone herself with dessert. I could see she was the type who wanted and needed everything to be perfect. She would make an excellent character in any mystery story, I thought to myself. And she didn't disappoint, as we all found out later after the meeting adjourned.

We had a good turnout tonight, which I was pleased to see. I was also encouraged that there was one new member here anyway. Before we came to order, I went over to introduce myself. She introduced herself as Wilma Roper, and learned that she was a teacher at the public school. She went on to explain that it was a friend that persuaded her to finally join the club. She informed me that she had been writing ever since she was a teenager – mostly poetry.

This past long winter left her with lots of time inside, and she had got in many books from the library. As she started to read them, she felt that she could write just as well as some of those authors. So she started writing what every author declares will be the best book ever written.

She blushed as she had to admit that she didn't get very far with this book. It was harder than she expected, and had shelved the idea shortly after. I encouraged her to get back to it, and expressed optimism that by belonging to this club, she would get enough tips to re-kindle her interest in writing. She assured me that she would think about it.

As usual the meeting started with my introduction of the theme of the night. I referred to the TV series 'How to Get Away With Murder' as an excellent program for our purposes. Once I outlined some of the story plots, the group eagerly began tossing out ideas. We narrowed it down to two story lines. Then I left them to it to choose which one they wanted to tackle, and go to it. They set up their laptops and the living room came alive with the tapping on the keyboards, and the usual cute comments they made either to themselves, or to the others, as they came up with ideas.

I gave them the usual one hour to finish their story. Then each one read their story to the group.

Comments followed. Finally I gave my critique on all of their stories, and then announced which one I was going to print in my next book of collections of these mystery stories. To my delight, I felt comfortable in picking Wilma's story, even though the plot has been written about many times before.

But there was enough interesting uses of words and images that I was sure she had potential to become a great author, and that by picking her story, it would encourage her to continue writing, and keep coming to our meetings. I collected all of their stories to keep on file. I assured

them that any one of them could appear in this or future compilations. I warned them not to be disappointed at tonight's efforts, and assured them that they had all done a great job. I let them know that I would be back for the November meeting.

I then handed over the meeting to Evelyn. She thanked me for coming, and then reminded me and the others of the following weeks' meetings, and locations. Then we broke off for the desserts and coffee that she had prepared. As I expected, they were delicious. The meeting finally broke up about ten.....

I am printing Wilma's story here ---- It is titled 'Who Really Killed Moira' --- “Moira Monaghan met her husband Mel on a blind date back when they were both in college. Her friend and classmate, Jessica Bell, had set it up for her. She had a boy friend, Sammy. Mel was a friend of his.

That first date did not go well.

He was handsome enough, she had to admit, but his demeanor was offputting to her. She felt he was too sure of himself, and he came on to her a bit too strongly for her liking. The group of four stayed for a few drinks and listened to the first set of the country band. Then they called it a night. They took the bus back to their dorm and went their separate ways.

She ran into Mel the next day after classes at Tim Horton's.

She spotted him first sitting at a table by himself. She tried to avoid him, but he saw her, and waved her over. She reluctantly sat down, and leered at him in an obvious look of dislike. He apologized for coming on so strong the previous night. He admitted that he was not really like that, but did when confronted with an uncomfortable situation – like a blind date. They both chuckled at the thought of it. The ice was broken, and from then on they became closer. They both graduated from college in the same year, and got married in the fall of 2000.

The first seven years of marriage went well. But that infamous 'seven year itch' set in for Mel. He began having an affair with a colleague at work. They both worked at one of the local TV stations in Toronto in the newsroom. Moira worked as the receptionist at a doctor's office.

Ironically – and conveniently – their office was just two blocks away from the TV station. So it had always been easy commuting to and from work. They both worked the same day shift, so took the subway to work, and ate lunch at a Subway, which was half way between the two businesses.

They always took the subway home too. However, suddenly one day in February of 2007, he told Moira that he had to work late on a developing story. She never thought anything about it as she headed home alone.

But then it started to happen more often. Next it was lunches that he didn't eat with her.

Then it became evenings when he wouldn't come home until near eleven – just in time to go to bed. Finally it became times when he was gone overnight. It was always the same excuse of work at the TV station.

As you can expect, Moira became suspicious that something was going on. Things became tense between them.

She finally took action one Thursday night in late May after finding a phone number on a slip of paper she found by the phone.

He had obviously forgotten to pick it up. She dialed the number, and was not too surprised when a woman's voice on the voice mail recording identified herself as Margo Turner. With a bit of digging she was able to find out her address. It was surprisingly close to where they lived, which lead her to believe that he was able to walk over to see her.

Very handy!

She decided to head over herself, just to check it out. It turned out to be an apartment building.

She went into the lobby, and scanned the list of occupants.

She found the apartment number which also acted as the buzz entry code. She left and headed back home. She was satisfied that she had done enough for that night. She wasn't ready for a confrontation just yet. She wanted evidence of him coming out or going into the building, or even better, being able to get a photo of the two of them together.

The next time came on a Thursday night in early June, when he headed out.

He claimed that he was going to Mac's to get his Lotto 649 tickets. She followed him. This was about seven at night. As expected, he did indeed go to her apartment. She stood across the street staring at the building. Unexpectedly she began to tear up and started sobbing uncontrollably. After a while, she stopped, wiped her eyes, took a deep breath, and headed across the street to the building. She went in, and looked around the lobby. She saw what she wanted, but it was inside the locked doors. While she was debating which apartment number to buzz, so she could gain entry – and she knew she wasn't ready to buzz Margo's number – she got a break. One of the tenants came down off the elevator and came out, opening the door for her.

Moira quickly slipped in and pretended to press the elevator button. She nonchalantly scanned the lobby for cameras. She was relieved to see that there were none. She hesitated by the up button beside the elevator. Was she ready to go up to the apartment and just listen at the door for any activity that might be going on inside, she asked herself. She admitted that she was not. But she was ready to see them together. So she initiated her plan. She went over to the fire alarm, and activated it. She quickly dashed out of the building and ran across the street.

She waited to see them come out of the building together. It was a large building, and lots of tenants came rushing out. Then she spotted them. Mel was holding her arm. Confirmation! She was both sad and glad at the same time. At least she knew her hunch was correct. Now she knew what she needed to do, confident that it was based on fact, and not just suspicion.

She slipped away and returned home. She began working on her next plan while she waited for him to return home to her.

She completed it just before he came in. She ran over to him and kissed him passionately. He was surprised at this display of affection. He was also startled at his own feelings being aroused.

They ended up in the bedroom to finish things off.

That weekend they actually spent together. On Saturday they did grocery shopping, going out for supper, and seeing a movie. On Sunday they spent inside. He watched football on TV, while she curled up in her chair, reading an Agatha Christie mystery, 'Murder on the Orient Express'.

About four that afternoon she put her plan in place. She called Margo and to her relief actually got her on the phone.

She quickly hung up now that she knew that she was home.

She told Mel that she needed to go to the corner store to get some milk. As she expected, he only half listened to her, as he was so absorbed in the game.

She slipped out and headed to Margo's apartment. Like before, she waited outside until a tenant came out. Then she slipped in, and headed up to her third floor apartment. She took a deep breath, as she worked up the nerve to knock on the door and confront her. After a few seconds and several deep breaths, Moira reached out with a shaky hand to press the buzzer. Margo was startled to see who it was, as she opened the door. Moira forced her way inside, and closed the door. She introduced herself, and before Margo could say or do anything, she pulled out Mel's pistol from her purse, aimed and fired one shot. It hit Margo in the heart, killing her instantly.

She fell to the floor. Red blood stains immediately began to seep out onto the beige carpet in the foyer.

Moira ignored that, and stepped over her and went to the phone. She called Mel, putting her hand over the receiver to muffle the voice. She urged him to come over immediately.

There was a developing story that they needed to cover. She added that she would tell him all about it once he got there. Moira knew that he would fall for that line. Sure enough he said that he would be right over. As soon as she hung up, she got the remote for the TV and turned up the volume, in case anyone in the other apartments had heard the first gun shot. She wanted the impression that any noises like that were from the program, and not for real.

Then while she waited for him to get there, she dragged Margo's body to the bedroom, laying her on her back, so the blood stained blouse she had on would be visible when Mel entered the room. She knew the trail of blood would make him panic, and let his guard down.

She went back out to the living room window to watch for him to arrive. Once she saw him coming up the street, she positioned herself behind the door of the bedroom. What a surprise I have in store for you, Mel dear, she whispered to herself, as she waited for him to come in.

Shortly she heard the click of the apartment door being unlocked. She heard him call for Margo. She held her breath waiting for the moment he came into the bedroom. As expected, he rushed in without looking around, and headed straight for the bed, where he saw her laying in blood. While he was leaning over her, Moira stepped out from behind the door, and called out to him. In shock, he turned to see her standing there at the foot of the bed, with his pistol pointed straight at him. She simply said, “ I know about the two of you, and I cannot stand the humiliation and hurt any longer, and I need to take action to resolve this issue. That is to kill both of

you.”

Before he could say or do anything she fired a shot into the side of his head. He dropped onto the bed, falling on top of Margo. He also died instantly.

She sighed in satisfaction that her plan was falling into place so well, staring and smiling insanely at her 'handiwork'. After a few moments, she seemed to come out of her reverie, and began moving around the bedroom.

First she struggled with his body, moving him so he lay on top of Margo. Then she draped his left arm over the bed, and placed the pistol on the floor. She moved his bloodied head just over the edge of the bed, to make it look like a suicide. She stood back in the doorway and surveyed the bed. She nodded and muttered that it looked like he killed Margo, and then shot himself, falling onto the bed over her, and dropping the pistol as he fell onto her. Perfect, she declared out loud.

Finally she pulled out the note she had written earlier, and read it out loud: “To whoever reads this note: 'I can no longer live with the shame that I have put my wife, Moira, through. I must end the affair with Margo, and put Moira out of her misery.

Killing them is the only way that I know to make it right. So I killed Moira earlier this afternoon, and dumped her body in a place that nobody will find.

She will never have to be embarrassed to be out in public again, knowing the shame of being cheated on. Margo and I need to have the ultimate punishment for our sins. So I have killed her with my pistol. I have committed suicide, as I can not bear the pain that I have put these two loves of my life through. God forgive me!” It was completed with a good impression of his signature. After being satisfied that it sounded legitimate, she placed it on the nightstand. She took one last look at the scene, and then checked the rest of the apartment, doing the obligatory wiping of fingerprints off everything she had touched. Her last task was to call 911 to report gun shots at this building. She left the apartment door ajar, in case any of the neighbours might come in before the police arrived. She hoped that someone would do just that. It would be a perfect reinforcement of the appearance of a murder/suicide.

In the final act of her plan, she vanished into thin air.....

The investigation concluded that this had indeed been a murder/suicide. Moira's body was never recovered, as the note had predicted. However, a few weeks later, some new evidence came out that questioned that assumption. Credit card transactions were reported to the police that were dated after her declared death. Then her health card had been used at a walk in clinic for a prescription for Percocet. Finally a friend of hers had reported seeing her in the Scarborough Mall about the same time, but was too far away to catch up to her, and she disappeared from view. It was determined that the sighting at the mall was inconclusive. After the most recent investigation, it was concluded that someone must have found her dead body, and her wallet must have been there in her purse, and the thief took it and began using the cards and ID's. That is a reasonable conclusion, right?”

The answer to the question of 'Who Really Killed Moira', of course, was Moira herself.

Michipicoten Chronicles

Wawa Landing Department of Lands & Forests on Wawa Lake early 1940's.

Wawa Lake has been a focal point of human activity in the Wawa area for eons.

While the area is part of a major migratory fly zone for flocks of geese, ducks and other seasonal birds, the beauty and size of the lake also attracted human activity to its pristine and rugged shoreline.

The Ojibway ancestors of our local Michipicoten First Nations called this crystal body of water Wawungonk or place of clear water. Due to the size and orientation of the lake, it became a regular route of travel for those heading inland from Lake Superior, north and east to the major river highway of the Michipicoten and Missinabi Rivers to the Moose River and eventually James Bay. Instead of paddling against the current up the Michipicoten River and carrying supplies up and around a number of lengthy portages and waterfalls, the Ojibway developed an easier route across Wawa Lake.

In 1781, the Hudson’s Bay Co. land surveyor Philip Turnor was the first European to record the route from Sandy Beach, up the Magpie River, across the flat grassy plains of the current Wawa townsite to the Wawa Landing on the south west shore of Wawa Lake.

This Magpie River – Wawa Lake portage was vital in the settlement patterns and economic development of the Wawa/Michipicoten region.

During the 1880’s this section of the Wawa Lake shoreline was instrumental in assisting the monumental project of building a trans-continental railway across Canada.

Mormon contractors covered portions of the original Magpie-Wawa portage with their corduroy roads to the Wawa Landing. Here they provided a wharf and steamer to relay men, horses and sup-

plies up the 9km water body.

This freight was headed to the Chapleau area to supply construction crews working on the rail-line between the Chapleau and White River regions. A blacksmith shop and adjacent log cabins were the first permanent European structures to be built on this site. The remains of the abandoned steamer hull and boiler could still be seen along the water’s edge until the ambitious metal scrap drives during World War II meant that parts of this unique artifact were collected for patriotic use.

The Wawa Landing turns up in diaries and journals of early tourists and sport fishermen who were attracted to the wilderness character and abundant fishing and hunting opportunities of Lake Superior country. William Teddy, a local native guide and trapper, regularly spent the warmer months escorting fishermen from Detroit, Chicago, Toronto and other urban centres, into the pristine wilderness areas for the chance to catch “the big one”.

The discovery of gold in 1897 on the shores of Wawa Lake

by William Teddy and his wife Louise Towab brought prospectors from far and wide to this quiet shoreline. The real fortune was made in the Balmoral Hotel built next to the original Mormon settlement site. The Lakeview Hotel sits on the site of the early Balmoral making it the oldest continuously occupied property in Wawa today.

Encroaching settlement and wood harvesting in Northern Ontario in the 1920’s led to the formation of Fire Protection services and Chief Ranger Offices.

The Department of Lands and Forests established a Deputy Chief Ranger office on Wawa Lake near the Wawa Landing in 1930.

Located snugly against the

protection of the mountain, the headquarters became a Chief Ranger station in 1940 and was responsible for coordinating all fire-fighting efforts in the region including a huge fire which threatened the community while passing just north of the mountain in 1946. Bush planes, which became instrumental in the protection of our forests, were a regular sight in front of the Rangers office until the Provincial Government moved their operations to a more central location downtown.

Remote fly-in bush pilots upgraded the old Fire Ranger docks and air base.

The rugged terrain and vast distances provided pilots with the opportunity to serve Wawa residents, bush workers and businessmen alike prior to the construction of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1960. Fly-In Tourist operations were also popular enterprises at this location for a number of years. Taking-off and landing on Wawa Lake was always a thrilling experience and a little unpredictable when the pilot had to contend with spring fog, fall winds, and winter snow or ice conditions.

Today the new Lady Dunn Health Centre has taken over the old Ontario Government property. The remote fly-in bush planes have abandoned their docks and headquarters. Children still continue to swim off the dock and can’t imagine a hot summer day in Wawa without this luxury. The Wawa Landing has become a special location for watching fireworks, children playing, outdoor markets, picnic area and snowmobile access. Wawa Lake is a picturesque water body that is steeped in rich history and will continue to nourish the citizens of Wawa for centuries to come.
