Bossy Women's Mexican Night At The Legion - Ole!

Article and photo by Barb Fisher   The pinatas were hung, the mariachi music perculated the background, the tacos simmered, the marguerita rims salted, and with a hall full of bossy women we were all eager to explore avenues to boast about such a commanding reputation. The evening was duel purposed; to inform women on the exciting opportunities in operating their own business combined with a fundraiser to help raise cash for the Legion to realize their goal of installing an elevator and handicap-friendly washroom in the Legion building.   Fanny Joanisse-Benoit representing PARO Loan Circles on Women's Enterprise Initiatives gave great information on individual strategies for a woman "growing her business" and outlined their loan application process. The Peer Lending Circles consist of small groups of up to 7 women who provide networking, peer support, and mentoring to asist women, businesses and communities. Members learn the loan application process for seed start-up and growth, access financial literacy and business development training, adapt to changes in the market place, adopt new technologies and tools, and connect to the greater economy. Contact circles@paro.ca 800-584-0252 for more information.   Angela Bruni representing Starter Company Plus affiliated with Millworks-Centre for Entrepreneurship in the Soo spoke on their program guidelines. The

program will provide mentoring, training and capital for entrepreneurs to start, grow or buy a small business with grant dollars available to eligible participants. Starter Company Plus provides training and business skills development to prepare in running ones own business, advice and mentorship from local business and sector leaders, better positioning to obtain more traditional financing, and where eligible, a micro-grant to kick-off a new business or expand an existing business. Contact a.ross@ssmedc. ca 705-251-3500 ext 1000.   Tracy Amos representing Superior East in Wawa outlined their Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) support of community econnomic development by assisting Ontario's rural and northern commuities to strengthen and diversify their economies. CFDC offers strategic community planning and socio-economic development, support for communitybased projects, business services, and access to capital. Besides small business counselling and youth entrepreneurship programs small business loans are available for up to $150,000, and for existing businesses only flex loans up to $10,000. Contact amos@superioreastcfdc. ca 705-856-1105 ext 222.   Heidi McLaren, our very own hard working entrepreneur did one of the things she does best - a very animated, comical testimonial of how she has persevered and overcome many hurdles to establish her business. Heidi emphasized that

Tracy Amos, Maury O'Neill, Heidi McLaren, Angela Bruni, Fanny Joanisse-Benoit a woman in business must first dream, then grow, diversify and most of all, never miss an angle. It is imperative to learn something new every day, and think outside of one's comfort zone. She gave personal information on creative ways in which she has engaged the community in expanding her floral arrangement business and gives back to the community in fund raising and gestures of human kindness. Growing up Heidi's family operated the very successful business in town Mr. Mugs and to engage the audience she handed out a carnation with a $5 bill to anyone offering a past experience in patronizing the small business. She gave many adages to keep in mind when managing one's business successfully: the biggest risk is not taking any risk at all, stay true

and humble, enjoy what you do, and although it has been said that blondes have more fun, it takes extra work for a blonde to be taken seriously! Article continued on Page 3...
