COUNCIL CANDIDATES FACE ISSUES & POSE ANSWERS

photo & article by Barb Fisher   With our municipal election soon to be in full swing, the candidates put themselves front and centre, and offered opinions and ideas on a wide range of issues posed by a full house of interested Wawa residents, and I must add that each and every candidate gave a brave and impressive unrehearsed response to random questions thrown their way. Maury O'Neill, EDC's CAO acted as moderator for the evening and although she warned that she reserved the right to monitor questions, every query was well placed and very pertinent to our Municipality entering into the next four years of local government direction. Mayor Rody, who will be our Mayor again for the next term through acclamation gave a short acknowledgement to all the candidates in their fortitude and bravery in running for public office: James Brown, Cathy

Cannon, Bill Chiasson, Mitch Hatfield, Pat Tait, Sandra Weitzel, and Robert Reese. Unfortunately Robert Reese was out-of-town on business and regrettably was not present for the evening. A question of the progress and usefulness of the anticipated water meter program was posed to James Brown as this particular item has been addressed by him in his bio handout information. He states that the program has been plagued by problems and is not operational. He warned that the hydro rates will increase, and in the effort to conserve water the sanitary sewer system will be impaired with solid material and may result in a very costly replacement of pipes. Bill Chiasson also weighed in on the discussion and in his expertise in the plumbing field, he agreed that there will be major problems in going

forward with the project. Jim also addressed a concern about the safety of flourine use in our drinking water and would work to having this additive removed. Jim was also questioned on possible contamination by water from the Essar mine property leaching into Wawa Lake, and in his current position in Environmental Operations at the former AOD mine site, he is very knowledgeable about this issue and gave assurance that all precautions have been taken to prevent this occurrence. There was plenty of diversity in queries posed, and to Cathy Cannon a question of local and regional transportation limitations is an area of great concern which Cathy has been involved in through her 25 years of volunteering and helping in grassroots concerns. She has plenty of ideas ready to put forward in the next council

term. Bill Chiasson, being the only presently elected Councillor completing his second full term in office was eager to shed much light on projects all ready in progress such as the Senior Housing complex on track and slated to come on line in 2019. In addressing the need for more designated handicapped parking lanes accessible to key businesses in town, Bill assured

that the issue will be included in the Corporate Planning Committee's agenda. Mitch Hatfield is a candidate who has been very steady in her ideas to streamline our tax dollars and promote transparency in the manner in which they are spent. She responded to a question on municipal staff efficiencies in that she would confirm that every job is necessary without repetition, and is economically
