The Wawa Ice Fishing Derby Donates $1,400.00 To LDHC Foundation The Wawa Ice Fishing Derby made a generous donation of $1,400.00 to the Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation. Since 2012 they have contributed $16,100.00 towards the purchase of medical equipment for the Lady Dunn Health Centre. This donation will help fund a Digital Radiography Upgrade which will replace the aging computed radiography currently used in the x-ray department at our hospital.

Lady Dunn Health Centre Announces The Appointment Of A New CEO

The Board of Directors of the Lady Dunn Health Centre (LDHC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Kadean Ogilvie-Pinter as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective September 16th, 2016.

Kadean Ogilvie-Pinter has varying experience in the health care field. She is a Registered Nurse, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and is currently pursuing her Masters of Business Administration.

For the past year, she has served as the Interim

Co-CEO at LDHC and has been an employee with the organization since 2007. Prior to becoming the Director of Patient Care in 2013 at LDHC, she worked at the Wawa Family Health Team in the capacity as a Program Manager for five years. She has also worked as a Public Health Nurse in Wawa.

The LDHC is a level C, accredited community hospital serving the residents of Dubreuilville, Hawk Junction, Michipicoten First Nation, Missanabie, Wawa, and White River. The hospital offers a range of medical, surgical, emergency, long-term care, mental health, diagnostic imaging services and community services programming.

On Thursday, September 29th, Michipicoten High School hosted its annual Grade 9 dinner. This was an opportunity for parents to meet the teachers and staff at MHS and learn about some of the extra-curricular activities and resources that MHS offers to our students.

Many people worked together to make the evening a success. Mrs. Benka, Mrs. Jozin and Miss Rota worked to organize and plan the evening. The evening started with a slideshow prepared by Miss Rota that introduced all of our Grade 9 students and their future career choices. Mrs. Morrison worked with her Grade 12 Food and Nutrition class to make a variety of delicious salads.

The LEAD class made some delicious desserts. Parent vol-

unteers helped by bringing desserts, helping to set up and clean-up. These parent volunteers include Nancy Spreng, Melanie Coe, Carol Duncan, Tara Coles, Marisa Roy, Gary Gendron and Karen Desaulnier. MHS staff also helped by cooking, setting and cleaning up. Thankyou everyone!

As part of the evening, parents who were interested in being part of MHS Parent Council signed a list. If you are a parent/guardian of a student at MHS and are interested in being a part of Parent Council please contact the school at (705) 856–4464 or email rowej@adsb.ca.

Opinions, or observations from an old newsman

On Being Owned By Cats Ebony is surely an appropriate name for a black cat. And black she is, this specimen of feline beauty I’ve been hearing about.

I’m only mentioning all this because she draws so many parallels to my own black beauty, Summer. Ebony belongs to a friend I sometimes lunch with, or perhaps he belongs to her as is often the case with cats.

Occasionally we get on the subject of cats and find, surprisingly, that we have many stories

to tell of our alter-ego pets that pass the time in a most pleasant way.

Let me tell you how my friend was found by his new owner.

He had lost his wife around a year ago and remembering being in the same position some ten years earlier I suggested he consider getting a cat.

I recall the emptiness of my house after my wife died and how much worse it might have been had there been nothing alive in the house but me. I had

three cats looking after me and certainly we spent time talking to each other through the year I spent alone except for these gentle friends.

My friend readily agreed that a cat might be the answer to some of those lonely moments.

I further advocated he get a “black female” cat. Did you know that animal shelters have a hard time giving away black cats? Or black animals of any nature????!

Anyway he went and picked out a lovely black female kitten that was about half grown and named her Ebony. He and Ebony got along very well, imprinting on each other as they learned to live together.

Ebony sits on his lap in the easychair and sleeps with him at night. She’s been to the vet for

all her shots and a small operation to keep her from getting in “the family way”.

Ebony tells him when to feed her and how to pet her. My friend pretty well does as he’s told. But that’s how you live with a cat. They’ve spent the summer out at his camp where Ebony has a screened-in porch to go out in through the day.

Recently my friend inadvertently left the screen door open as he was carrying some items out to store in an outbuilding up the hill. When he discovered the error he dropped the load he was carrying and hastened back to return Ebony to her porch.

The cat of course slipped under the building out of reach.

He coaxed the little creature out from under, but still couldn’t

put a hand on her to take her in. He decided to continue his mission and carry his boxes on up to the outbuilding up the hill. This is all happening in the dark.

He walked into the somewhat cluttered cabin and looked for a place to put down his stuff.

As he fumbled about he heard a distinctive “meow” right behind him. Ebony had cheerfully followed him up the hill and into the building and needed some attention…she said. She allowed him to carry her back to the cottage without protest.

It must have been time to go home.

And so it goes. We are both owned by little black she cats.

It’s good though. We like it.

Rural communities in Northern Ontario face challenges in accessing internet service levels comparable to those in urban areas due to factors in our remote location. Access to Broadband is key to economic, education, social and health development. Numerous Broadband projects were delayed in 2015 and then cancelled by FedNor in 2016 in favour of waiting for the National Connecting Canadians Broadband funding criteria announcement. Many of the cancelled Broadband projects already had committed Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and Internet Service Provider partner funding and although backbone and institutional connectivity is crucial for a modern digital economy, the last mile opportunity that existed in these projects that have been cancelled is equally as important. FedNor's mandate is to support regional collaboration that will enhance Community Economic Development, business growth, competitiveness and innovation. It was resolved by Council that the Municipality request that the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development review the decision that no longer permits FedNor to fund Broadband initiatives, and that the Broadband projects that have been cancelled

by FedNor across Northern Ontario be reinstated and reviewed for potential funding.

Council authorized the flying of the Lions Club flag for one day in the spring of 2017 in celebration of its 100th Anniversary of Service to Humanity in 2017. The theme for the Anniversary Celebration is "Where There's a Need, There's a Lion".

Council agreed to financially support the Legacy 150th Project (Wawa Heritage Committee) in the amount of $3,500 and employer coverage for the NOHFC Youth Intern program, however the funds will not be available until after the finalization of the 2017 Budget.

The list of accounts for September 2016 in a total amount of $5,380,534.98 was approved for payment by Council.

The Ministry of Transportation's Connecting Links Program provides dedicated provincial funding for road and bridge projects on designated connecting link highways. These are critical roadways that serve provincial and municipal interests as they carry long-distance provincial highway traffic moving through communities and local traffic within the community. Wawa's link connects to Highways 17 and 101 via Chris Simon Drive and Main Street. The Municipality accepted the recommendation in Report IS 2016-001 and authorized the submission of an application for the 2017-2018 Connecting Link Program and commits to fund up to $250,000 toward the project cost of $2,000,000

prior to the approval of the 2017 Capital Budget.

The Municipality accepted the recommendation in Report PP 2016-01 and approved the repairs at 53-55 Broadway Ave. by Millette General Contractors Ltd for a cost of $650 plus HST. Bylaws given three readings and passed: • 2984-16 - to confirm the proceedings of Council at its meeting held October 4th.

• 2985-16 - to enter into an Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) Formula-Based Component Agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Parent Snack Hacks To Fight After-School Hunger (BPT) - "How was your day," you ask your child after school.

Rather than hearing a funny recess anecdote or story about a tough test, she murmurs back, "I'm hungry."

School days are long, and if your child participates in afterschool activities, they're even longer. Busy kids need plenty of fuel to keep their bodies and minds going.

"Considering most kids get just 20 minutes to eat lunch, and some as early as 10:30 in the morning, after-school hunger becomes a big problem," says Laura Fuentes, cookbook author, food blogger and founder of MOMables.

Fuentes developed five simple tips to help fight afterschool hunger and keep kids going until dinnertime.

Tip 1. Plan ahead Adding extras to lunch keeps things interesting for kids, plus helps them feel full for longer. Plan ahead to keep hunger pangs at bay all day.

"By adding premade frozen smoothies inside my kids' lunchboxes, I'm able to keep their lunch cool, plus they quench thirst and satisfy hunger at the same time," says

Fuentes.

Tip 2. Have portable snacks ready A balanced snack that can be eaten on-the-go is a life saver. Pack the pantry with wholesome options that both parents and kids love.

Additionally, don't overlook fresh fruit that is both healthy and portable.

"I love pairing sandwich crackers with apple slices," says Fuentes. "They offer up to 5 grams of protein, plus are made with real peanut butter and cheddar cheese - a combination kids just love."

Tip 3. Pack a balanced lunch Balancing the lunchbox can help ensure kids stay satiated longer. Make sure to include protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates, fresh fruits and vegetables in every lunch you pack.

"School lunch breaks are shorter than ever, so cutting up foods into smaller pieces can make it easier and quicker to eat," Fuentes says.

"Additionally, dividing the foods sent to school in multiple containers distributes the food for different break periods."

Tip 4. Make a wholesome breakfast Many kids come home starving because they haven't eaten enough to fuel their day.

Making breakfast part of your morning routine is essential for setting kids up for success.

"Two of my favorite easy and portable breakfast ideas that can be made ahead of time are quick breakfast burritos and overnight oats," says Fuentes.

"They provide just the right amount of fuel and protein to help kids focus in school."

Tip 5. Rule out thirst "Since thirst can often masquerade as hunger, it's important to have water available at all times," Fuentes says.

Try tucking an extra water bottle in your kid's backpack and offer a cup immediately when they get home. To encourage kids to drink more water, add a touch of flavor and color by placing fresh orange slices or berries inside their cup.

After-school hunger doesn't stand a chance with these smart tips. Try them out today and watch kids come home happier and feeling healthier than ever.

Our past president who had served for 18 years, Bud Smith, has passed. On Wednesday, October 12th a celebration of his life will be held at the Seniors’ Drop In. A man who knew so much about the club and its running will truly be missed by the Executive and

others in the running of the club and its activities. He had been in about ten days ago to work on the Membership matters.

The General Meeting, scheduled for the Wednesday afternoon, will now be held starting at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, October 13th. When the business is completed we will proceed to the cribbage game everyone has come to enjoy.

We are also reminding you all that the deadline for ordering turkey pies is Friday, October 14th, 2016.

Last week I began my column by mentioning the fascinating art of sleight of hand.

Those of you who are fascinated by observing the sleight of hand magic tricks have been exposed to a real treat on the nightly news lately; watching the Liberal masters of this art. The thing is, we all know that the magicians we see on the stage or performing on the street corners are just performing a trick in which the hand is quicker than the eye. And that’s just what we are getting from this Liberal government – tricks. Like I said before, the ‘gifts’ they offer voters is simply a “now you see it, …now you don’t” illusion.

Let’s start with child care.

Up front the government itself says that it is a government’s responsibility to provide all families with access to essential, high-quality child care.

They must ensure every child’s journey includes education, social/emotional support and cognitive development. To be effective the childcare spaces must not only be available and high-quality, but they must be affordable for young families.

Parents are struggling with low minimum wages, many employers offer only part time work, and people are forced to work 2 or 3 jobs with odd

shifts. How’s a family supposed to thrive in that sort of situation? The government must not only create the spaces but make sure they are affordable and not-for-profit.

The government says, “Okay, here are more child care spaces.” But they won’t commit to making them affordable with a decent minimum wage, making them not-for-profit and laying out trackable, achievable goals. So those child care spaces are “now you see them, …now you don’t.”

After many months of prodding and pushing by a multitude of citizens groups and the New Democrats, the Liberals finally acknowledged that they need to make life more affordable for people.

They recently announced they would offer hydro customers a TEMPORARY rebate for the provincial 8% portion of the HST on hydro bills. But, in another sleight of hand move, it’s there now - but how long can we count on seeing it before it vanishes before our eyes? Many of us miss the fact that prior to 2010 there was no PST on hydro at all. As well, the Liberals were all too happy to make sure hydro companies listed a 10% discount as a separate item on hydro bills so the government would get the credit, but feigned the deci-

sion was “out of their hands” when it came to hiding the upcoming carbon tax as part of a delivery fee on future hydro and gas bills. “Now you see it, …now you don’t” Now consider the recent announcement that the Liberals were enhancing the rural rate relief program to reduce delivery charges for low-density residential customers, promising to lower hydro bills by about $30 per month. The truth of the matter is that only about 330,000 Hydro One customers living in “low-density” areas will qualify for this rate relief.

Meanwhile, Statistics Canada says there are 1.8 million people living in rural Ontario.

Most rural Ontarians are not going to be getting this enhanced rural rate relief.

The government has not been clear about this. Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault stood in the House and said, “A 20% reduction for families in rural, remote and northern communities, like in my part of the province, will actually be a significant savings for many families.” The reality is, most rural Ontarians are not going to get this 20% in savings. “Now you see it, …now you don’t.”

And, the best for last…. the sell-off of Ontario’s most important and profitable public utility. Ontarians are being forced to stand on the sidelines and watch something that was built by and owned by all people of this province, as it is sold out from under us.

In fact, just this week in the Legislature, both the Liberals and the Conservatives voted down NDP Leader Andrea Horwath’s motion calling for the immediate halt to the selloff of Hydro One and any further privatization of the province’s electricity system.

Watch now, and don’t blink.

Watch as our precious public utility vanishes before your very eyes. And no magic trick will ever bring it back.

The bottom line is, when it comes to sleight of hand, the audience is only fooled for so long. Eventually they see there’s something up the sleeve or behind the back of the magician. Something tells me that that time is coming soon. Maybe voters will decide to perform some prestidigitation of their own.

Masquerade Fund Raising For Cardio Equipment For Manitouwadge Hospital Article & photo by Lynn Cregheur On September 24th, the Manitouwadge General Hospital (MGH) held a Masquerade Ball in order to fundraise the necessary funds for new cardiac monitoring equipment for the hospital.

Jocelyn Bourgoin, the hospital CEO, explained that it was a very successful evening. Thanks to the amazing volunteers, the arena was totally transformed into a dream room which made the patrons forget that it was, first of all, a community center. The transformation was so incredible, that one could pretend they were in an immense ballroom in Manitouwadge. A large number of people participated to this function and more could have been accommodated.

The guests were treated to hors d’oeuvres and succulent dinner. A silent auction from donations was available for all to participate.

This was the first time that the Manitouwadge General Hospital hosted such an event. The last time that funds were raised in a large event was 20 years ago, for the new hospital. That day was also celebrating the 20th anniversary with an open

house where the community could visit the site and go through old pictures. All of these events were done as a thank you to the community for all their efforts and support throughout the years.

The money raised on that day is to replace a cardiac monitoring system for the emergency and observation rooms, as well as the nursing station. The technology changes rapidly in that domain so much that, after five years, equipment is dated. After ten years it should be replaced. If a breakdown occurred, parts are hard to find. We thought that we had modern equipment; no more! This project is expected to cost $110,000 to $120,000.

With all of the government cuts, the MGH has no funds to purchase the equipment for the proper function of the hospital, fundraising is the next solution. This was the first even in the fund raising campaign. More donations will be needed to acquire this valuable equipment.

The auxiliary is working overtime, in order to raise the necessary funds to accomplish this project. For the moment, what is being done is great.

‘Easy’ Passwords And Free Wi-Fi Can Cost You Plenty

October is International Cyber Security Awareness Month There are many ways to ensure your safety and prevent becoming an unwitting victim of cybercrime that could cost you thousands of dollars, according to security experts and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Using a weak password while on a free Wi-Fi network can make your device more susceptible to cyber theft. You can strengthen your password by including a variety of symbols, letters and numbers. Try a minimum length of eight characters and use a combination of upper and lower case letters and at least one number. You should also commit your passwords to memory and don't store them on your computer or mobile devices.

Wi-Fi connections present risks at home and on the road.

Wi-Fi hotspots are common targets for identity thieves as they are often unsecure and accessible to anyone. Unless you are using a secure web page, you should never send or receive private information when using public Wi-Fi. Avoid conducting financial or corporate transactions on these networks and use a hard-wired connection when available.

Be aware that free Internet access points are sometimes established for malicious or deceitful purposes. These Internet access points are purposely named to imitate trusted access points. This access point may even indicate a higher signal strength than the legitimate one.

During Cyber Safety Awareness Month, the OPP, other police services and international partners are promoting public awareness to help prevent all Canadians from becoming victims of online crime. Marathon Suspicious Person Charged

(MARATHON, ON) –On October 4, 2016 at approximately 2:50 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment received a report of a suspicious male in the Town of Marathon. Officers attended a public building on Peninsula Road, Marathon and located the male who was the subject of the complaint.

The male had consumed alcohol and was taken into police custody for being intoxicated in a public place.

After investigation, the male, 42 year old JeanSebastien POIRIER, of no fixed address, has been charged with Uttering Threats to Cause Death, Fail to Comply with Recognizance, Resist Peace Officer, and Theft Under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code. He remains in custody and is to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on October 6, 2016 to answer to these charges.

Marathon Suspicious Person

(MARATHON, ON) –On October 3, 2016 members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment received a report of a suspicious male in the Town of Marathon. A female reported to police that at approximately 10:00 p.m. she was walking on the trails in the Town of Marathon, and she observed a male subject who was walking in her direction. The female became fearful and ran, at which time the male was observed running behind her.

Marathon OPP patrolled the area for the subject with negative results and a North West Region K9 unit attended to assist . The investigation for this occurrence is ongoing.

Marathon Male Arrested And Charged For Break And Enter

(MARATHON, ON) – On September 30, 2016 at approximately 7:30 p.m., members of the Marathon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated a report of a break and enter at Highway 17, Town of Marathon. A male subject that had unlawfully gained entry into a building was located and arrested by officers. Further investigation revealed that the male had driven to the scene in a vehicle that had been reported stolen.

The 43 year old male, Christian Alin TALBOT, of Kelowna, British Columbia has been charged with Break, Enter a Place to Commit an Indictable Offence and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code. The male appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice for a bail hearing on October 1, 2016 and remains in custody.

Youth Charged With Uttering Threats

(BLIND RIVER, ON)- On September 27, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to threatening call at a local school in the Town of Blind River.

Police learned shortly after 12:00 p.m., a 12 year old male was walking on Woodward Avenue when an older male youth ran up to him and demanded he give him an item. If he didn’t return it by such a time, the older youth would hurt him. The 12 year old ran away and returned to school to report the incident to the school Principal.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the male was located and arrested on Village Road on the Territory of Mississauga First

Nation.

As a result of the investigation, a 14 year old male, from Mississauga First Nation, Ontario, was charged with: Uttering Threats-Cause Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is schedule to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on October 13, 2016.

Male Charged With Multiple Offences

(SPANISH ON)- On September 22, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic related incident. An intoxicated male had left his residence and was in breach of his conditions in the Town of Spanish.

Shortly after 9:00 p.m., police located and arrested the intoxicated male on Trunk Road. Police attended a residence on Trunk Road and learned that the male had thrown his wife’s phone and damaged it.

While in the rear of the cruiser the male began to kick the rear passenger doors and challenged the officer and uttered threats towards the officer. Police used Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) Spray to gain control of the male.

As a result of the investigation, a 33 year old male from Spanish, Ontario was charged with: • Fail to Comply with Recognizance, contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code (CC); • Fail to Comply with Probation Order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC; • Mischief – Domestic, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC; • Mischief Over $5000, contrary to section 430(3) of the CC; and • Uttering Threats-Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC. The accused is appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on September 23, 2016.

Motor Vehicle Collision-Female Charged

(IRON BRIDGE, ON)- On September 24, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 17, in the Town of Iron Bridge.

Shortly after 2:00 p.m., a vehicle pulled out of a local gas station parking lot into the path of a westbound vehicle on Highway 17. There were no injuries sustained and no tow required.

As a result of the investigation, Penn ANDREOLA, 54 years of age from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was issued a provincial offence notice and charged with: Fail to Yield from Driveway, contrary to section 139(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

Cochrane Driver Arrested For Over 80

(COCHRANE, ON) – On September 23, 2016, the James Bay Detachments Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting RIDE checks at the corner of Fifth Street and Western Avenue in the Town of Cochrane.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., police intercepted a motor vehicle at the RIDE check and their investigation revealed that the male driver had consumed alcohol.

Andrew CASHABACK, 32, of Cochrane, ON was arrested and charged for: • Driving with More than 80 mgs. of Alcohol in Blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC) His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle has been impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane on October 27, 2016 to answer to the charges.

Female Charged With Uttering Threats

(BLIND RIVER, ON) - On September 14, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to threatening call in the Town of Blind River.

Police cautioned a female for uttering a threat towards a male.

Shortly before 2:00 p.m., on September 19, 2016, police received another complaint from the same male advising that he was again threatened by the same female.

On September 20, 2016, Chantal HEFFERN, 38 years of age from Blind River, Ontario was arrested and charged with: Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on November 2, 2016.

Male Charged With Stunt Driving

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – On September 20, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m., police observed a westbound vehicle travelling over 50 kilometres over the posted speed limit on Causley Street. A traffic stop was initiated.

As a result of the investigation, Zhenjun CHEN, 39 years of age from Thornhill, Ontario was charged with: Drive Motor Vehicle While Performing Stunt. 50+ km/ hr in a posted 50 km/hr zone, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway traffic Act. The driver’s vehicle was towed and his driver’s seized.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on November 23, 2016.

Must Be True.

I Heard It On The Radio There's a weekly comedy show on CBC Radio called This Is That. The premise of the show is simple: the two hosts make up absurd news stories, then 'interview' actors (usually each other) who pretend to be principals involved in those stories. Example: The announcer intones that Toronto City Council has a plan to release black bears into city parks. One of the hosts then says something like “We've reached Nigel Fetlock, Toronto City Parks Manager, to comment.”

And away they go.

Everything on the show is deadpan. There is (for once on CBC Radio) no phony laugh track. The stories are presented in the mock reverential tone so familiar to CBC listeners.

Just one problem. A lot of listeners think the stories are true.

Doesn't matter how ridiculous or outlandish the premise is. One week they announced that in an upcoming visit from the Queen, Canadian motorists would have to drive on the wrong side of the road in her honour.

Another reported that dogs in Montreal would be required to respond to commands in both English and French.

Still another told the tale of a Canadian university being sued by a student for failing to accommodate her allergies to “cactuses, escalators and tall people.” Harper's magazine reported that story as fact.

A This Is That spoof about Canadian university teams playing soccer without a ball 'to remove competition from the game' sucked in USA Today and the Washington Times which printed the story as gospel.

It wasn't just Americans who got fooled. Each week, dozens of ticked off Canadian listeners burn up the telephone wires to CBC head-

quarters fulminating about items they've fallen for on This Is That. Outrageous!

Disgusting! Appalling! -those are some of the nicer things they shout into their phones.

But here's the thing: the stories on This Is That are always palpably ridiculous.

Since when did radio listeners – a sizeable chunk of them anyway – become such suckers?

Well, since 1938 at least.

That's when Orson Wells' War of the Worlds documenting an alleged Martian invasion threw several thousand American listeners into a tizzy.

But that was nearly 80 years ago. Radio was new and listeners were credulous.

Haven't our BS detectors become more sophisticated?

Actually, we've lost a lot of our BS detectors. Winnowing out the fatuous from the factual used to be a main function of editors at newspapers, magazines, television and yes, radio stations. That was before the Internet. Now everything is presented as 'fact'. You want to believe that the British Royal Family is actually a front for a race of extraterrestrial lizard overlords who live at the centre of the earth? There's are websites for that.

Alternatively, if you want to believe that a Saskatchewan farmer is hosting a Melting Man festival; the Royal Canadian Mint is selling advertising space on our fivedollar bill, or that a Canadian is making thousands by smuggling water over the border to the U.S....

Well, for that you can check out This Is That archives – which by the way, now feature a banner headline designed to forewarn the gullible.

It reads, in big bold capital letters, SATIRE.

The 'Who Really Killed Moira?' Mystery

Professor John Gray of the 'Mystery Stories Clubs of Canada' here in Wawa. It's time for the monthly meeting of the Wawa club on this night of Tuesday, October 11th, 2016. We are meeting at the home of the President, Evelyn Devereaux.

At 7:30 we were settling down to begin. I could smell the coffee in the kitchen, and I was sure Evelyn had outdone herself with dessert. I could see she was the type who wanted and needed everything to be perfect. She would make an excellent character in any mystery story, I thought to myself. And she didn't disappoint, as we all found out later after the meeting adjourned.

We had a good turnout tonight, which I was pleased to see. I was also encouraged that there was one new member here anyway. Before we came to order, I went over to introduce myself.

She introduced herself as Wilma Roper, and learned that she was a teacher at the public school. She went on to explain that it was a friend that persuaded her to finally join the club. She informed me that she had been writing ever since she was a teenager – mostly poetry. This past long winter left her with lots of time inside, and she had got in many books from the library. As she started to read them, she felt that she could write just as well as some of those authors. So she started writing what every author declares will be the best book ever written.

She blushed as she had to admit that she didn't get very far with this book. It was harder than she expected, and had shelved the idea shortly after. I encouraged her to get back to it, and expressed optimism that by belonging to this club, she would get enough tips to re-kindle her interest in writing. She assured me that she would think about it.

As usual the meeting started with my introduction of the theme of the night. I referred to the TV series 'How to Get Away With Murder' as an excellent program for our purposes. Once I outlined some of the story plots, the group eagerly began tossing out ideas. We narrowed it down to two story lines. Then I left them to it to choose which one they wanted to tackle, and go to it.

They set up their laptops and the living room came alive with the tapping on the keyboards, and the usual cute comments they made either to themselves, or to the others, as they came up with ideas.

I gave them the usual one hour to finish their story. Then each one read their story to the group.

Comments followed. Finally I gave my critique on all of their stories, and then announced which one I was going to print in my next book of collections of these mystery stories. To my delight, I felt comfortable in picking Wilma's story, even though the plot has been written about many times before. But there was enough interesting uses of words and images that I was sure she had potential to become a great author, and that by picking her story, it would encourage her to continue writing, and keep coming to our

meetings. I collected all of their stories to keep on file. I assured them that any one of them could appear in this or future compilations. I warned them not to be disappointed at tonight's efforts, and assured them that they had all done a great job. I let them know that I would be back for the November meeting.

I then handed over the meeting to Evelyn. She thanked me for coming, and then reminded me and the others of the following weeks' meetings, and locations.

Then we broke off for the desserts and coffee that she had prepared.

As I expected, they were delicious. The meeting finally broke up about ten.....

I am printing Wilma's story here ---- It is titled 'Who Really Killed Moira' --- “Moira Monaghan met her husband Mel on a blind date back when they were both in college.

Her friend and classmate, Jessica Bell, had set it up for her. She had a boy friend, Sammy. Mel was a friend of his. That first date did not go well. He was handsome enough, she had to admit, but his demeanor was offputting to her. She felt he was too sure of himself, and he came on to her a bit too strongly for her liking.

The group of four stayed for a few drinks and listened to the first set of the country band. Then they called it a night. They took the bus back to their dorm and went their separate ways.

She ran into Mel the next day after classes at Tim Horton's. She spotted him first sitting at a table by himself. She tried to avoid him, but he saw her, and waved her over. She reluctantly sat down, and leered at him in an obvious look of dislike. He apologized for coming on so strong the previous night. He admitted that he was not really like that, but did when confronted with an uncomfortable situation – like a blind date. They both chuckled at the thought of it. The ice was broken, and from then on they became closer. They both graduated from college in the same year, and got married in the fall of 2000.

The first seven years of marriage went well. But that infamous 'seven year itch' set in for Mel. He began having an affair with a colleague at work. They both worked at one of the local TV stations in Toronto in the newsroom. Moira worked as the receptionist at a doctor's office.

Ironically – and conveniently – their office was just two blocks away from the TV station. So it had always been easy commuting to and from work. They both worked the same day shift, so took the subway to work, and ate lunch at a Subway, which was half way between the two businesses.

They always took the subway home too. However, suddenly one day in February of 2007, he told Moira that he had to work late on a developing story. She never thought anything about it as she headed home alone. But then it started to happen more often.

Next it was lunches that he didn't eat with her. Then it became evenings when he wouldn't come home until near eleven – just

in time to go to bed. Finally it became times when he was gone overnight. It was always the same excuse of work at the TV station.

As you can expect, Moira became suspicious that something was going on. Things became tense between them. She finally took action one Thursday night in late May after finding a phone number on a slip of paper she found by the phone. He had obviously forgotten to pick it up.

She dialed the number, and was not too surprised when a woman's voice on the voice mail recording identified herself as Margo Turner.

With a bit of digging she was able to find out her address. It was surprisingly close to where they lived, which lead her to believe that he was able to walk over to see her. Very handy!

She decided to head over herself, just to check it out. It turned out to be an apartment building. She went into the lobby, and scanned the list of occupants.

She found the apartment number which also acted as the buzz entry code. She left and headed back home. She was satisfied that she had done enough for that night.

She wasn't ready for a confrontation just yet. She wanted evidence of him coming out or going into the building, or even better, being able to get a photo of the two of them together.

The next time came on a Thursday night in early June, when he headed out. He claimed that he was going to Mac's to get his Lotto 649 tickets. She followed him. This was about seven at night. As expected, he did indeed go to her apartment.

She stood across the street staring at the building. Unexpectedly she began to tear up and started sobbing uncontrollably. After a while, she stopped, wiped her eyes, took a deep breath, and headed across the street to the building. She went in, and looked around the lobby. She saw what she wanted, but it was inside the locked doors.

While she was debating which apartment number to buzz, so she could gain entry – and she knew she wasn't ready to buzz Margo's number – she got a break. One of the tenants came down off the elevator and came out, opening the door for her. Moira quickly slipped in and pretended to press the elevator button. She nonchalantly scanned the lobby for cameras. She was relieved to see that there were none. She hesitated by the up button beside the elevator. Was she ready to go up to the apartment and just listen at the door for any activity that might be going on inside, she asked herself. She admitted that she was not. But she was ready to see them together. So she initiated her plan. She went over to the fire alarm, and activated it. She quickly dashed out of the building and ran across the street.

She waited to see them come out of the building together. It was a large building, and lots of tenants came rushing out. Then she spotted them. Mel was holding her arm. Confirmation! She was both sad and glad at the same time. At least she knew her hunch was correct. Now she knew what she needed to do, confident that it was based on fact, and not just suspicion.

She slipped away and returned home. She began working on her next plan while she waited for him to return home to her.

She completed it just before he came in. She ran over to him and kissed him passionately. He was surprised at this display of affection. He was also startled at his

own feelings being aroused. They ended up in the bedroom to finish things off.

That weekend they actually spent together. On Saturday they did grocery shopping, going out for supper, and seeing a movie.

On Sunday they spent inside. He watched football on TV, while she curled up in her chair, reading an Agatha Christie mystery, 'Murder on the Orient Express'.

About four that afternoon she put her plan in place. She called Margo and to her relief actually got her on the phone. She quickly hung up now that she knew that she was home. She told Mel that she needed to go to the corner store to get some milk. As she expected, he only half listened to her, as he was so absorbed in the game. She slipped out and headed to Margo's apartment.

Like before, she waited outside until a tenant came out. Then she slipped in, and headed up to her third floor apartment. She took a deep breath, as she worked up the nerve to knock on the door and confront her. After a few seconds and several deep breaths, Moira reached out with a shaky hand to press the buzzer. Margo was startled to see who it was, as she opened the door. Moira forced her way inside, and closed the door. She introduced herself, and before Margo could say or do anything, she pulled out Mel's pistol from her purse, aimed and fired one shot. It hit Margo in the heart, killing her instantly. She fell to the floor. Red blood stains immediately began to seep out onto the beige carpet in the foyer.

Moira ignored that, and stepped over her and went to the phone.

She called Mel, putting her hand over the receiver to muffle the voice. She urged him to come over immediately. There was a developing story that they needed to cover. She added that she would tell him all about it once he got there. Moira knew that he would fall for that line. Sure enough he said that he would be right over. As soon as she hung up, she got the remote for the TV and turned up the volume, in case anyone in the other apartments had heard the first gun shot. She wanted the impression that any noises like that were from the program, and not for real.

Then while she waited for him to get there, she dragged Margo's body to the bedroom, laying her on her back, so the blood stained blouse she had on would be visible when Mel entered the room. She knew the trail of blood would make him panic, and let his guard down. She went back out to the living room window to watch for him to arrive. Once she saw him coming up the street, she positioned herself behind the door of the bedroom. What a surprise I have in store for you, Mel dear, she whispered to herself, as she waited for him to come in.

Shortly she heard the click of the apartment door being unlocked. She heard him call for Margo. She held her breath waiting for the moment he came into the bedroom. As expected, he rushed in without looking around, and headed straight for the bed, where he saw her laying in blood. While he was leaning over her, Moira stepped out from behind the door, and called out to him. In shock, he turned to see her standing there at the foot of the bed, with his pistol pointed straight at him. She simply said, “I know about the two of you, and I cannot stand the humiliation and hurt any longer, and I need to take action to resolve this issue. That

is to kill both of you.”

Before he could say or do anything she fired a shot into the side of his head. He dropped onto the bed, falling on top of Margo. He also died instantly. She sighed in satisfaction that her plan was falling into place so well, staring and smiling insanely at her 'handiwork'. After a few moments, she seemed to come out of her reverie, and began moving around the bedroom. First she struggled with his body, moving him so he lay on top of Margo. Then she draped his left arm over the bed, and placed the pistol on the floor. She moved his bloodied head just over the edge of the bed, to make it look like a suicide. She stood back in the doorway and surveyed the bed. She nodded and muttered that it looked like he killed Margo, and then shot himself, falling onto the bed over her, and dropping the pistol as he fell onto her. Perfect, she declared out loud.

Finally she pulled out the note she had written earlier, and read it out loud: “To whoever reads this note: 'I can no longer live with the shame that I have put my wife, Moira, through. I must end the affair with Margo, and put Moira out of her misery. Killing them is the only way that I know to make it right. So I killed Moira earlier this afternoon, and dumped her body in a place that nobody will find. She will never have to be embarrassed to be out in public again, knowing the shame of being cheated on. Margo and I need to have the ultimate punishment for our sins. So I have killed her with my pistol. I have committed suicide, as I can not bear the pain that I have put these two loves of my life through. God forgive me!” It was completed with a good impression of his signature. After being satisfied that it sounded legitimate, she placed it on the nightstand.

She took one last look at the scene, and then checked the rest of the apartment, doing the obligatory wiping of fingerprints off everything she had touched. Her last task was to call 911 to report gun shots at this building. She left the apartment door ajar, in case any of the neighbours might come in before the police arrived.

She hoped that someone would do just that. It would be a perfect reinforcement of the appearance of a murder/suicide.

In the final act of her plan, she vanished into thin air.....

The investigation concluded that this had indeed been a murder/suicide. Moira's body was never recovered, as the note had predicted. However, a few weeks later, some new evidence came out that questioned that assumption. Credit card transactions were reported to the police that were dated after her declared death. Then her health card had been used at a walk in clinic for a prescription for Percocet. Finally a friend of hers had reported seeing her in the Scarborough Mall about the same time, but was too far away to catch up to her, and she disappeared from view. It was determined that the sighting at the mall was inconclusive. After the most recent investigation, it was concluded that someone must have found her dead body, and her wallet must have been there in her purse, and the thief took it and began using the cards and ID's. That is a reasonable conclusion, right?”

The answer to the question of 'Who Really Killed Moira', of course, was Moira herself.

I received this brief blog from ‘TUT’s the Universe’ a few weeks ago. I thought it would be interesting to explore his suggestions given my ongoing downsizing efforts to prepare for moving. I guess you could say the purging could be identified with the not-so-great stuff.

It’s a couple days after writing the above, and I’m feeling pretty darn good. I believe

I’ve got a good idea of how I’m doing this ‘packing’ thing - one day at a time, just a little bit of the not-so-great stuff each day, and once a week I have help with the heavy stuff, and come moving day, well, we’ll see!

It’s interesting to me that I began purging ‘stuff ’ about two years ago when I felt very strongly that a huge change was in store for me. I finally settled on being close to my family – Port Stanley, and now London. So the heavy decision making has been done, I think, although everything is subject to change, seemingly without notice.

Over the past fifteen months,

since my application to Kettle Creek Villa, it’s been a waiting game with no movement within that complex. And so, change is in the works.

With help from family I’ve settled on a one bedroom in London. Only God knows whether this change is ‘etched in stone’. Until then I will follow the dictates of my heart.

Hmmmm! Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Just wish I knew what all the ins and outs of this move will be. How will this move happen? Where do I fit within that paradigm? I remember those days when I could plan a move, and follow through with ease. Not so now, because there are many other moving parts (human).

I know who is transferring my belongings from one location to another. I know I have to find a couple of strong backs and legs (three flights of stairs here) on this end, so I know that will happen. But what

Nuclear Waste In Northern Ontario Nine Communities In Site Selection Process

Open The Door To Leaving Children Home Alone National School Safety Week (October 17 - 23, 2016) Every year once school starts, working parents are put in a tricky spot. It can be difficult to strike a balance between work hours and school hours, and this difficulty often manifests itself in the form of a couple of hours where the parent can't be with their child before and/or after school.

Many parents choose to enroll their children in before- or after-school programs, arrange for their children to be watched by family or friends, or are fortunate enough to have flexible work hours that allow them to be available once school lets out for the day.

Many other parents, though, explore the possibility of leaving their children home alone or with siblings, trusting them to stay safe, take care of themselves and lock up the house when they leave.

During this year's National School Safety Week, the Canada Safety Council wants to remind parents of a few safety aspects to consider before making the decision to leave their children home alone.

Firstly, make sure your child is prepared for the added responsibility. The Canada Safety Council recommends that no child below the age of 10 be left home alone, and additional consideration should be given to the child's temperament, maturity health as well as any legislation that may be in effect in your province.

A child should not be left home because it's the easy option or because it costs less than an after-school program.

It's far more important to ensure that children are well equipped to look after their own wellbeing.

That begins from a mental standpoint. Ask the child if they feel as though they'll be able to handle the responsibility. Take care to address any concerns or fears they may have, and ensure that you take the necessary amount of time for the child to fully understand the responsibilities being assigned to them.

For a child being left home alone before school, these responsibilities could include: • Fixing themselves breakfast • Packing their lunch for the day • Ensuring they are out of the house in time to catch the school bus,

if applicable; and • Locking the doors before leaving for school A child who has a few hours after school may have responsibilities including: • Locking the door behind them after arriving home • Calling a parent or guardian to let them know they have arrived home safely • Doing homework in an unsupervised environment; and • Doing chores, if applicable Children should also be taught how to handle emergency situations, including what to do in case of injury, natural disaster or power outages. The child should always have access to a first aid kit containing different-sized bandages, sterile gauze pads, tweezers, peroxide and a digital thermometer.

Other advice for parents to consider: • Set firm rules for the child, with clear do's and don'ts. This can include restrictions on TV or Internet time, what to eat as a snack, as well as general restrictions on what they are to do with their time.

• Keep in touch with your child - be sure that you're available at all times by phone in case of emergency.

• Make sure your home is safe and secure, with as few injury risks as possible.

• Limit the amount of time your child is home alone to a couple of hours, at most. If it's going to be any longer, hire a babysitter or find a before- or after-school program that can handle the extended hours.

Peter Homenuck, PhD, RPP Senior Consultant and Patrick Dolcetti, NWMO Regional Communications Manager Article & photos by Lynn Cregheur On September 29th, the Manitouwadge Nuclear Waste Community Liaison Committee held their monthly meeting at the Manitouwadge Council Chambers; about 20 people attended. The Committee’s roles is to help ensure residents’ concerns are addressed, and provide input for information sessions to meet local needs.

This is in order to involve the entire community in learning about the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and Canada’s plan for safely managing Canada`s used nuclear fuel over the long term.

Manitouwadge is one of nine communities/areas currently involved in the site selection process. The others include: White River, Hornepayne, Ignace, Elliot Lake, and Blind River. There are also three communities in Southwestern Ontario. They include: South Bruce, Central Huron, and Huron-Kinloss.

According to the NWMO, the earliest a site is likely to be built and operational is 2040.

Although for planning purposes, the NWMO would like to be down to one community and area of study by the year 2023.

An update on NWMO engagement activities over the last few months was presented by John Fraser, NWMO Relationship Manager.

This was followed by a presentation on what a possible Centre of Expertise might involve. The presentation was given by DPRA consultant, Peter Homenuck, who is working with the NWMO. According to information on the NWMO website: www.nwmo.ca: “A Centre of Expertise will be established at, or near, the site. Its initial purpose is to support the multi-year testing and assessment of the site with a focus on safety and community well-being.

The centre will be home to a technical and social research program, and a technology demonstration program, involving scientists and experts from a wide variety of disciplines. An engineering test facility will develop materials and equipment to be used in the repository. The

centre will also house demonstration equipment that displays the entire packaging and container placement process. In later phases of the project, it will become a hub for knowledge-sharing across Canada and internationally.

The design and use of the centre will be developed collaboratively with those living in the area. It could, for example, be a focal point for the community to learn about the project. It could also become a destination that welcomes visitors from the region and beyond. Should the First Nation and Métis communities in the area desire, it could feature a learning area focused on how Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge is being applied to the project.

Opportunities to work with the community to sustain and enhance the natural environment will also be explored."

After the presentation from Peter Homenuck, the Indigenous leaders, Chief Wayne Sabourin from Pic Mobert and Chief Duncan Michano from Biigtigong Nishnaabeg, formerly Pic River First Nation each made a statement to the committee about the reasons they are against this project. They said that the nuclear waste in the ground will poison the earth. They said they were ready to do everything they can in order to bring the project to a stop. They mentioned that they would be ready to be arrested and go to jail in order to protect nature. Chief Sabourin told the commit-

tee and people in attendance that if their interest is was to help their local economies, this is not the best solution.

Chief Michano told the audience about his concerns of the mess that their children and grandchildren will have to endure if ever there were problems with the underground nuclear waste storage. They also said they had made similar remarks at the monthly nuclear waste community committee meetings in Hornepayne and White River held during the same week.

Interviewed following the meeting, Patrick Dolcetti, NWMO Regional Communications Manager, said that “the NWMO is always available to meet and begin collaborating together on engagement with anyone.

For this project to work in any potential siting area, it will require regional partnerships and that obviously will include Aboriginal and Metis organizations and communities. We respect all points of view and comments.” Dolcetti added, "the NWMO are not here to convince people that this project is right for any one particular area.” Dolcetti says: “We encourage all those who are interested to come, engage, and learn together.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of misunderstandings around this important national infrastructure project.

With that in mind, certainly the long time lines before any potential site would be selected, can be seen as a positive factor. As it gives all potentially interested and impacted parties the advantage of time to collaborate before any potential decisions would be required.”
