The Fashion Show - In Support Of Alzheimer Society's Group Minds In Motion Article by Barb Fisher, Photos supplied by Tracy Toffner This is the second year that our Wawa Family Health Team (WFHT) has partnered with the Alzheimer Society Sault Ste Marie Algoma District and Wawa Fitness, Dance and Yoga to present a fashion show statement classically presented by Centre Stage Fashions to promote awareness and fundraise in support of the Minds in Motion (MIM) program offered here in our community.

With our aging population age-friendly communities such as ours are creating physical and social environments that support independent and active living for people facing dementia. Minds in Motion is a program which combines physical activity and mental stimulation for people with early to mid-stage signs of Alzheimer's disease or other dementias and their care partners. The Minds in Motion program has been up and running for some months now and is proving to be a very successful endeavour in helping families cope in the aging process. Combining physical activity and mental stimulation, Minds in Motion

unfolds to laughter and chatter with new friendships forming and stories being shared. The program includes gentle and easy to follow physical activities and fun social activities focused on building personal skills. The program improves balance, mobility, flexibility, alertness, and increases confidence and comfort with one's own circumstance with mutual support from others facing similar experiences. For the care partners, it's an opportunity to focus on their own health and have fun with their partner while learning from other care givers. Pilot studies have found that participants' endurance improved by 20% and strength by 15% reporting decreased social isolation and an increase in informal networks of support. 85% of participants want to continue the program beyond the initial 8 week introduction. 90% of staff, volunteers and students identified an increase in their knowledge related to older adults afflicted with dementia. Patients and care partners and in some circumstances, individuals may also register with their care partners as many wonderful volunteers are gaining experience in the field. Chris

Rask, one of Wawa's resident fitness instructors has received specialized training to run the program which is offered free of charge once a week on Tuesday from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. for 10 weeks at regular intervals throughout the year at the Lady Dunn Health Centre (LDHC). The program runs at least three times per year, fall, winter and spring. The program's first session was held last fall with only four participants and a facilitator. This year, the team is happy to announce that the current fall session has 24 participants, two facilitators and four volunteers. Christy Reid, First Link Coordinator of the Alzheimer Society in Wawa is offering a 7-part education series to the Minds in Motion Care Partners and volunteers. This education series will give valuable information as well as an informal social support network.

The series will begin Tuesday, October 17th at the LDHC. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or would like to attend the series, contact Christy Reid or Jolene Binda.

And now back to the runway where everyone has had a chance to mingle, peruse the clothing available for purchase, sample the decadent

appetizers, and a last minute stop at the bar in preparation to be amazed. The fashions were brought to the runway by the reknown Canadian designer Joseph Ribkoff who has stood out in the fashion industry for over 60 years

selling in 64 international markets. The show featured separates in classic lines and shades that can be dressed up or down for all seasons.

Porn: Fuelling the Sex Trade

Article by Beverly Boyd As I get older and I think back to the 60’s when sex was finally coming ‘out of the closet’ and women were beginning to feel empowered about their own sexuality I am astonished about how naïve we were. Yes, the understanding that sex was something that could be enjoyed by men and women and that we should celebrate it rather than hide it shamefully away was an important change in our society. I don’t think we understood that the whole power dynamics would come into play so strongly and have such a negative effect upon women and girls and young males.

Bringing sexual behaviour out in the open, brought with

it an acceptance of a behaviour that began to be classified as normal – the use of pornography. Over the last half century pornography has changed from magazines wrapped in brown paper at the local stores filled with images of partially clothed women in seductive poses to what we have today – an internet filled with images not only of women, but of young, very young girls and boys, in situations where violence and degradation are dominant.

These aren’t simple, titillating, pictures, but horrific images. They are easily accessible by anyone with a computer or smart phone – including young people.

And contrary to what we

might tell ourselves as we view these images – this isn’t just ‘acting’, this isn’t people making a living – this is an industry that preys on vulnerable people and makes billions of dollars every year by selling the lives of those being depicted. The porn industry also created a false reality of what intimacy could be or should be – no longer two people loving one another but one of personal, instant physical gratification even at the expense of full, healthy relationships. Because our society has normalized pornography we have become desensitized and require more graphic, taboo, boundary-less’ images to fulfill our fantasies.

phy ‘fuel the sex trade’? As individuals view these airbrushed, images they often build a desire to live out these fantasies. Their partners, or others, may not be willing to participate in many of the more degrading actions and so . . . the next best thing is to go and buy someone who will participate. Once there is a demand there is always someone who is willing to supply the product. And the seller doesn’t care if the product is willing. The products are human trafficking victims.

Human sex trafficking is the industry that is connected to pornography. It is likely that every time you watch pornography you may be witnessing the rape or sexual assault / exploitation of a young girl or boy. Human trafficking is a scourge on our society that we must end!

Wawa and Area Victim Services will be hosting an event designed to bring awareness to the effects of pornography on people and the link between pornography and human sex trafficking. A main feature of the event will be the showing of Over 18: A Documentary about Pornography.

The video is described as a cleareyed examination of modern pornography and its effects on kids, teens, parents and porn stars. This is an event for adults, parents, teachers, anyone over the age of 16.

Those age 14 or 15 may attend if accompanied by a parent or guardian. It will be held on October 18th at 7:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion here in Wawa. Refreshments will be provided. I hope to see you there!

AVIS DE LA COMMISSION DE L’ÉNERGIE DE L’ONTARIO Upper Canada Transmission, Inc. et Hydro One Networks Inc. ont déposé des requêtes auprès de la Commission de l’énergie de l’Ontario en vue de, respectivement, construire une ligne de transport à haute tension et de mettre les installations connexes à niveau.

Upper Canada Transmission, Inc. demande à la Commission de l’énergie de l’Ontario (CEO) l’autorisation d’élargir le réseau de transport d’électricité dans la région située entre Wawa et Thunder Bay. Cela implique la construction d’une ligne de transmission aérienne d’électricité de 230 kilovolts sur les 450 kilomètres reliant le PT de Wawa avec celui de Lakehead (le Projet de raccordement électrique est-ouest). Hydro One Networks Inc. demande à la CEO l’autorisation de moderniser les installations connexes.

Les requérants demandent également à la CEO d’approuver les contrats types qu’ils offrent aux propriétaires fonciers permettant aux requérants d’utiliser leurs terres pour la construction des installations et l’acheminement des lignes proposées. En outre, Upper Canada Transmission, Inc. demande à la CEO d’établir un compte de report pour la comptabilisation des travaux de construction en cours.

En 2013, la CEO a nommé Upper Canada Transmission, Inc. comme émetteur d’électricité responsable des travaux d’aménagement pour le Projet de raccordement électrique estouest. Suite à cela, le ministre de l’Énergie a informé la CEO que le lieutenant-gouverneur en conseil avait, le 4 mars 2016, rendu une ordonnance déclarant que le Projet de raccordement électrique est-ouest était nécessaire et qu’il était prioritaire (désigné projet prioritaire). Il est important de remarquer que la désignation actuelle de projet prioritaire modifie l’examen par la CEO d’une requête de construire une ligne de transport à haute tension.

En particulier, la Commission est tenue d’accepter que la construction de cette ligne est nécessaire lorsqu’elle se penche sur les trois enjeux ci dessus.

L’audience de la CEO ne représente pas le seul processus d’approbation en ce qui concerne la construction de cette ligne de transport. Le ministère de l’Environnement et de l’Action en matière de changement climatique (MEACC) est tenu d’approuver l’évaluation environnementale déposée par Upper Canada Transmission, Inc. auprès du MEACC. L’examen de la CEO ne portera que sur les trois enjeux susmentionnés et il n’abordera pas les autres enjeux comme, par exemple, les répercussions sur l’environnement, la santé, l’esthétisme et la valeur des propriétés.

La CEO est un organisme public indépendant et impartial. Elle rend des décisions qui servent l’intérêt public. Son but est de promouvoir un secteur d’énergie viable et rentable financièrement qui vous offre des services énergétiques fiables à un coût raisonnable.

SOYEZ RENSEIGNÉ ET DONNEZ VOTRE OPINION Vous avez le droit de recevoir des renseignements concernant ces requêtes et de participer au processus.

• Vous pouvez dès maintenant consulter ces requêtes ainsi que des informations complémentaires ayant trait à celles-ci sur le site de la CEO • Vous pouvez présenter une lettre de commentaires qui sera examinée durant l’audience • Vous pouvez demander à la CEO la permission de participer activement à l’audience (à titre d’intervenant). Academic Strike Begins Monday, October 16, 2017 At Confederation College

THUNDER BAY, ON, October 15, 2017 – Please be advised that the OPSEU CAAT Academic Union has confirmed that a strike will begin on Monday, October 16, 2017 across Ontario Colleges, including Confederation College.

Classes for all academic programming at Confederation have been cancelled for the duration of the strike. Many college services will remain available.

Confederation College will ensure that our students have the opportunity to complete their year. It is important to note that no student at an Ontario college has ever lost their year due to a strike.

As always, safety will continue to be of the utmost concern for Confederation College. The public is asked to be patient

and respectful if crossing picket lines, and to refer to the Picket Line Protocol for more information. The union has confirmed that the public should expect picket lines at each of the four entrances to the Thunder Bay campus, as well as a picket line at the entrance to the Aviation Centre of Excellence. At this time, there are no planned picket lines for our regional campuses.

The following summarizes what the public can expect now and through the duration of the strike for Confederation College: • All academic delivery has ceased at Confederation College. This includes Workforce Development/ Contract Training, Continuing and Distance Education, Co-op and

The SUCCI Wellness Centre – Minowaadiziiwin, Health Centre, Children and Family Centre and Follett Bookstore will remain open for the duration of the strike.

ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD NOTICE Upper Canada Transmission, Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board to build a high-voltage transmission line and Hydro One Networks Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board to upgrade associated station facilities.

Upper Canada Transmission, Inc. is asking the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) for permission to expand the electricity transmission network in the area between Wawa and Thunder Bay. This involves the construction of approximately 450 kilometres of 230 kilovolt electricity overhead transmission line connecting Wawa TS with Lakehead TS (the East-West Tie Line Project).

Hydro One Networks Inc. is asking the OEB for permission to upgrade the associated station facilities.

Library Update New Books New on the seven day of fiction shelf this week: "The Last Tudor" by Philippa Gregory, "Without Fear or Favor" by Robert K. Tanenbaum, "The Lying Game" by Ruth Ware, and "Seeing Red" by Sandra Brown.

After School Programs We will be starting our after school programs on October 3rd. Flyers for the list of clubs will be dropped off at the schools this week. Hope to see everyone at the Library for the after school programs!

Drop Box We are now operating with our new drop box in place. You may deposit your returns only in the drop box when the library is closed.

Used Battery Collection & Computer Cartridge Recycling We are a collection site for single use batteries, computer cartridges and toners. You can drop them off at the circulation desk at the Wawa Public Library.

The library is closed Sundays, Mondays and all holidays. We are open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.; Friday 11:30 a.m – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday from noon until 2:00 p.m.

Bold tunes introduced the models, all Wawa's own, comfortable in their curves strutting their stuff amid the cheers, whistles and high-fives from the boisterous crowd. This year the runway welcomed a smattering of testosterone as Dave, Mike and Adam joined the ladies in including some men's fashion apparel and they did a great job.

After expenses, all profits from the ticket sales will go to fund the Minds in Motion program. $20.00 of every ticket price went towards a clothing purchase from the great one of a kind fashion selection provided by Centre Stage Fashions.

A Message From MPP Michael Mantha About The Ontario Junior Citizenship Awards Dear Friends.

Since I first was elected as MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin in 2011 I have never ceased to be amazed at the number of outstanding generous and gifted citizens that we have in this riding who make incredible contributions as leaders and helpers in our communities. In particular I always note the incredible contribution that the youth in our communities bring to the table. It has been my great pleasure to meet so many of these young individuals.

Unfortunately it is only a small number of these special people who are actually recognized for the difference their contributions make to our communities.

The Halloween Mystery at Ghostly Manor I know it is a bit early for Halloween stories, but this is a story my father always told me at this time of year. I am telling it now on the anniversary of his mysterious death last year on October 18/16. The doctor told us it appeared that he died of fright.

I have heard of this before, but I can't believe it, especially with my father. He was the strongest, healthiest man I knew. My mother found him in the basement in the middle of the night, clutching a makeshift cross. He was cowering under the stairs, screaming for the ghost of his late father to leave him alone. His mother bent over to touch him, with the idea of braking this trance he seemed to be in. She gently touched him on the arm, and she recounted the look of terror on his face as he tensed up and called out: “Father, no - get away from me. Leave this house so we can live in peace.”

She told me that his eyes bulged out, and he collapsed onto the floor. Now I know that I have not seen any ghosts myself, but I have felt a presence in certain areas of this old family homestead, and at various times. I have never mentioned this to my mother. Well, anyway, here is the story he used to tell me on Halloween night after I had collected my loot of candies, and was getting ready for bed. It was a couple of days before Halloween. Frank Enstein, his wife Bella and their ten-year old daughter Roxanne, were going to be confronted with a mystery, or more like a scary ghost story, that turned out to be a precursor to the events on Halloween night, October 31, 1893. They lived in a spooky, run-down three-story red brick mansion, with a rusty iron gate and fence surrounding it. It sat conspicuously at the top of the only hill in the area at the edge of the village of Sleepyhallow.

Elm Street, the main street, ended at their location in a cul-de-sac.

The oldtimers reminded everyone that asked, that this house was once the finest house in the village. It was constructed by Roger Wolfman, a founding father, back in the 1860's. He was a tycoon who made his fortune in the railway business. The road ended up there for obvious reasons.

Whenever the Wolfmans' held a gala event at their mansion, called Ghostley Manor, in honour of his mother, Agatha Ghostley, the gate was always open, for the carriages to swing up to the front entrance, drop off the guests, and then pull off to the side while they waited for the guests to leave after the party was over. That made it easy for the carriages to exit the property afterwards, and head back to their own houses in the village or beyond. Every Halloween there was always a masquerade ball held there. All the guests had to come in a costume reflecting the Halloween theme. Masks were mandatory. Other than that, it was up to the guest to show up in whatever costume they could imagine. Children from the village were allowed to come too, between 5 and 6 p.m. They were to come in costume, and were fed cookies and milk in the back porch, before leaving with a treat of homemade caramel apples, and a bag of popcorn. That left

time for them to get home, and the parents, where applicable, to get ready for the evening ball. It was always a great evening that everyone looked forward to every year. That is until 1866. That was the night that Wolfman, his wife Sofia, and their young daughter Matilda were all found murdered in the wine cellar down in the basement. It was a real mystery of its' time. Everyone had gathered in the ballroom, dancing the night away. Usually at eleven at night, the Wolfmans' would invite everyone into the music room for wine and cheese, or coffee. On the table would be a huge Halloween themed cake like a carved pumpkin. There was always a small bag of homemade fudge and candies imported from England especially for the occasion, on the same table. Everyone was invited to take one home with them as they left.This year, though, Alfred the butler had waited for the word from Mr. Wolfman to bring up the chilled wine and begin to pour it into the glasses. When he still hadn't appeared by eleven, he made a 'management' decision to go down to the wine cellar himself, and begin bringing the cases of wine up. He was sure that Mr. Wolfman must have just lost track of time. But when he got to the door of the cellar, he was puzzled that the door was open ajar. He immediately thought that Mr. Wolfman was down here himself, looking for the wine. He called out to him, and rushed into the room. The flickering light from the candles mounted on the wall made him stop 'dead' in his tracks as he saw the horrific sight in front of him. He gasped, staring at them, transfixed in horror. The three of them had had their throats slashed, and were all laying in a pool of blood on the dirt floor. One of the kitchen staff came down to help just then.

Her scream jolted him out of his trance. He turned to her, and ushered her out of the cellar.

The police were sent for, and the festive mood turned into shock as all the guests learned of the grizzly murders that had happened right under their feet, in the midst of a delightful party.

Everyone was held for questioning. Eventually they were all allowed to go, and the house was closed up. The servants all moved out to other jobs.The gate was locked, and was never occupied again for several years. The family was buried in the family plot out behind the mansion. The murders were never solved. After about two years, the legal process had worked its' way through the court system. A new family moved in about a week before Halloween, 1869. They stayed there only until Halloween night. They later claimed that it was about ten when they started hearing strange noises, and doors slamming shut and or opening up. They felt a cold air swirling around the ballroom and music room. Then at eleven they heard screaming noises coming from the cellar. The man went downstairs to investigate. He was surprised when he was greeted with three people standing at the doorway to the wine cellar. They appeared to be covered in wine stains, which showed up very dis-

tinctly on their white garments.

He asked them who they were, and if they were okay. He fainted as they rushed past him, and flew up the stairs to the kitchen doorway. He reported afterwards of being so cold, but put it down to the cold emanating from the wine cellar. After quickly recovering, he dashed upstairs to join the others.

His wife and daughter were cowering under the kitchen table.

They told him of seeing the same images rushing past them and heading for the music room. They were totally unnerved. When the disturbances and screaming started up again at midnight, they had had enough, and quickly left the house in the middle of the night.

They never returned. Over the years, several other occupants tried to live there, but were also soon scared off. Finally no one would live there, and it became notorious as being haunted. That is until the Ensteins'. They moved into the rundown house in April of 1893. But those rumours didn't seem to bother them. They made no effort to fix up the house either.

They were always being tormented anytime they went to town, for being so weird looking, dressing funny, and talking in a hard to understand accent. They just went about their business. They never ventured out of their house that much. What they did up there nobody from the village was sure.

Actually, he was a scientist who was doing experiments on the molecular structure of the human brain. He was connected with a distinguished university in Vienna, Austria. They had agreed to pay his expenses in order to allow him complete privacy at this residence, and to give him the chance to fasttrack his studies. They wanted his results by the end of December.

His wife was his assistant, and tutor to Roxanne. They never noticed any indication of the house being haunted until the last couple of days before Halloween.

It began first with the discovery of a tin box in one of the drawers of the old writing desk in the study

by Bella on the afternoon of October 29th. She had wanted to do some dusting and other cleaning before making some fudge and candies to put in paper bags for the kids. She wasn't sure if any kids would come, but she wanted to be prepared. This was the only day that she was free from helping Frank, and not having to go over lessons with Roxanne. Ever since moving in, cleaning had not been a priority, and certainly this old desk that came with the house, held no interest to her. But this day, she decided to open the drawers and see what was in them.

Tucked way in the back of this one side drawer was an intriguing box.

It had a macabre painting on the lid of the box of a house that looked similar to this one, enveloped in flames. She looked closer at it, and noticed a small signature in the right hand corner. She found a magnifying glass, and brought it into a size large enough to read it. In black ink was the name Dracula Enstein.

She dropped the tin box onto the desk top, as she was startled at the name. She was going to call Frank, but decided to open the box first, just to see what was inside. Then she would bring it to him, she decided. Inside the box was a note scratched out in red ink. It read: 'To Whomever Reads This Letter – If you find that I have been murdered, just know that it was my business partner, Edgar Allan Enstein who plotted to do it. If it

does happen, I put a curse on all his family, and if any one of them puts foot in this house, I will see that they die by the same method as I. Furthermore, I will ensure this house goes up in flames, casting them to eternal damnation in hell. This will occur on October 31st. Be Forewarned.' It was signed

by Roger Wolfman, and dated October 31, 1866. Bella was disturbed with what she had read.

Then her mind went racing, as she reviewed their family tree. She remembered that Frank's grandfather was named Edgar. He had a brother named Dracula. It came flooding back to her. She remembered Frank discussing them several times, especially when he was trying to cajole Roxann to do her homework. Yes, Edgar did work for a railway line as an executive, or maybe it was a partner. Dracula was a painter. She gasped as she realized it was him that painted this tin box. She became frightened, and ran to get Frank, who was just finishing some notes on his latest test that he conducted in his lab that he had built next to the wine cellar. After he had read the note, he shook his head. “Imagine that.” Bella continued with concern. “You aren't concerned at all, are you? But what if it is true? It's even worse than in the note. He had no way of knowing that his wife and daughter would also be murdered as well as himself, as he wrote it that day. What if all three come back to kill us, and burn this house down on Halloween night?

I think we better leave today. Let's not take any chances. Please, Frank.” He tried to calm her down.

Eventually he succeeded, and they decided to stay. That night she woke up just before midnight. She heard the distinct footsteps of three people walking down the hallway and stopping outside their bedroom. Then she heard a metal on metal rubbing noise, as if someone was sharpening a knife.

Finally she heard a man's deep voice utter these chilling words: “We are coming for you. You released the curse when you opened that tin box, and your fate is now sealed.” She froze in terror.

She shook Frank to waken him, just in time to hear the rattling of the doorknob. But as he woke up, it stopped. The house became eerily quiet. He asked her, “What is it? I don't hear anything.” She said in a shaky voice, “I heard it.

They threatened to kill us. They were trying to get in just as you awoke. Frank, I'm scared. We gotta leave this house immediately.” He tried to calm her down.

“Now, Bella, I think you were likely just having a nightmare. You know how you get those after eating those cucumber sandwiches in the evening. I'm sure that was all it was. C'mon, cuddle down next to me, and go back to sleep. It'll be all right.” She gave in, although she knew it was no nightmare. It really happened. But her exhaustion hit her hard, and she felt safe in his arms. She soon drifted off to sleep. Frank lay awake, pondering what she claimed. As so often happens, things seemed a lot better in the morning. They both got back into their routines, although he noticed that Bella was a lot more nervous and distracted. Roxann seemed unaffected. October 30th was just a normal day. Even Halloween night started out quiet at the Manor. As Bella expected, nobody showed up for candy.

Meanwhile, about eleven a couple of teenagers from the village were sneaking up to the Manor to check it out, and play a trick on them.

They had just jumped the rusted fence when they heard bloodcurdling screams coming from the house. That scared them off.

Then shortly after midnight, the lone police officer in the village was on patrol, and he noticed smoke billowing up from the hill.

It began to drift toward town, thanks to the prevailing wind blowing that night. He rushed over to the fire chief's house.

Before long, the small group of firefighters were on their way up the hill to the Manor. By then it was engulfed in flames. Because they had to shuttle water up and down the hill, it soon became evident that they were not going to be able to save it. On the morning of November 1st, they were finally able to get close enough to the pile of rubble that was left. There was still some smoldering beams and furniture throwing up smoke. The police chief gingerly moved around until he stopped short. He realized he had come to the wine cellar. He thought he saw a hand poking up through a couple of beams. He slowly made his way closer. He was able to kick one of the beams out of his way. He was shocked with what he found.

Laying beside the wine cabinet were the three bodies of the Ensteins'. As he leaned in closer, he gasped, and nearly threw up.

All three of them had their necks slashed. He was amazed that the bodies had not been burnt beyond recognition, considering the intensity of the flames as the house burned to the ground. Very strange, he commented. For some reason, his mind flashed back to the Wolfman murders back in 1866. He was a young officer in those days. That had been his first case that he had been involved in.

The Einsteins' were in the identical positions as the Wolfman family. Ironic too, that both families consisted of a man, a woman, and a girl. Suddenly a glint of light in his face brought him back from his thoughts to the reality of the situation at hand. He noticed that it was coming from an object in Mrs. Einstein's left hand. He bent over, and pried it open. He saw that it was just a small tin box. He commented, “Humph. I wonder why she is clutching that.” Before he could pursue that thought, a couple of officers came up behind him, asking if he had found anything. He replied no, as he pocketed the tin box. He needed more time to sort this out, as the evidence he saw was beyond a rational explanation. Later that day he was found dead amid the ashes of the Manor, next to the remains of the wine cellar, with his throat slashed. It was a shock to everyone, and threw the investigation into turmoil. In fact, these cases were never solved, and it still remains a mystery to this day, as to what really happened that Halloween night of 1893, and the following day. The Manor is long gone. A double-lane highway now goes over it. And it's bizarre that many people have reported a cold air sucking into their vehicles as they pass through this small area.

There is also a whiff of smoke too, and a faint screaming sound.

Everybody claims it is just vehicle exhaust from all the other traffic going by them, and the whistle of the wind in windows is just because they were not rolled up tightly. But maybe it is something more horrific or eerie, to say the least, don't you think?

Glenn Gould Was Here…

This past week, the Town of Wawa hosted a group of Japanese journalists who were participating in a media tour sponsored by Algoma Kinniwabi Travel Association.

Their focus? All things Glenn Gould and his fascination with Wawa!

Glenn Gould is the iconic Canadian and internationally renowned piano virtuoso who revolutionized the way the world listens to the classics.

Born in Toronto in 1932, Gould had perfect pitch at age 3, and appeared with the Toronto Symphony at 14 to rave reviews.

Over the next decade and a half, acclaim for his amazing genius spread world-wide. He continued to transform the world of classical music by embracing the recording studio medium.

He also produced dozens of film and television programs for CBC. Equally famous for his eccentricities (the heavy overcoat, scarves, fingerless gloves and cap, his hypochondria and aversion to live performance), Gould's diversions led him North to Algoma. This internationally renowned Canadian pianist, documentarian and composer made regular road trips to Wawa in the late 1960’s and 70’s. His spontaneous northern expeditions normally included confinement to a favourite room at the Wawa Motor Inn where he spent many hours masterminding his best work.

In a CBC documentary produced in 1968, Glenn is filmed enjoying some of his favourite Wawa sites at Michipicoten Harbour, Sandy Beach, Scenic High Falls and Silver Falls.

He states that Wawa “is an extraordinary place. I’ve been coming here for 4 or 5 years now to sort out some thoughts and try to get some writing done. Something very strange happened to me the first time I was up here. I was away for about 2 weeks…away from Toronto, and away from cities, and away from city living and city thinking and I did I think the best writing of my entire life at that time and I decided that it was the sort of therapy I needed and I’ve been coming back for more of the same ever

To commemorate Wawa’s connection with Mr. Gould, the Municipality sponsored two Heritage Doors painted by Heather Sinnott, both of which are located at Scenic High Falls. Heather also painted two Heritage Chairs focused on Gould’s musical talent and engagement with nature and the sense of sound. The Tourist Information Centre also displays a beautiful portrait painted by local artist Adam Robert Martin, which was commissioned by Soul of Superior Tours with permission from the Glenn Gould Estate, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Gould’s birth and 30th anniversary of his death in 2012.

Gould’s music literally struck a chord with millions around the world. His incredible talent, curious personality and depth of skill and character continues to mesmerize fans and followers even 35 years after his death. There continues to be massive interest in Mr. Gould in Japan. The Japanese media tour in Wawa last week will be publishing photographs and articles about their time in Wawa.

Circulation will reach Japan, Paris, and Toronto and will no doubt continue to spread the word about the unique beauty and character of our community which fascinated Glenn Gould.

Wawa Mustangs

Practices are well underway for the Wawa Mustangs 201718 hockey season. This season marks the fourth for the all girl O.W.H.A Bantam hockey team. Eleven players have returned,along with a new additional player to the roster.

Two players from last seasons roster have graduated to the AA Wildcats all girl hockey program in Sault Ste Marie.

Best of luck to Brooke and Ella. The Mustangs hit the ice three times a week with practices on Tuesdays,Thursdays and Fridays from 4:00-pm to 5:00pm. As always, family and friends are welcome to come out and support their favourite hockey team! GO MUSTANGS!!

Hockey Player Of The Week - Ty Gendron

Article by Barb Fisher, photo supplied Eight year old Ty Gendron takes the spotlight this week as he rises through the minor hockey program to future stardom. Ty plays in the centre position and wears #13 on his Novice team shirt. He attends school at Ecole St. Joseph and

beside his school time lessons, learning respect for his mentors and team members on and off ice are valuable lessons that will follow him in all of life's endeavours. Ty's favourite team in the NHL is the Pittsburgh Penguins and follows Sidney Crosby's lead in skill development and dedication to the game. Besides scoring goals, Ty loves the game and sharing fun with his teammates. Life doesn't get any better than this.

Our Novice, Atom, Peewee and Bantam Travellers are all participating in the North Eastern Ontario Hockey Association which includes teams from the communities of Kapuskasing, Hearst, Chapleau, Porcupine, Timmins, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane and Wawa.

Being part of this league allows our community to enjoy 12 Home Games in every division and has each team travelling the district to participate in 12 Away Games throughout the season.

Wawa's Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre

is the place to be this weekend for great hockey action when Wawa Travellers take to the ice for their home openers.

Action begins with both of our Novice and Atom teams hosting double-header games this Saturday, October 21st against the Kapuskasing Ice Hawks.

Novice action begins at 1:00 p.m. and the second game at 3:30 p.m. The Atoms hit the ice at 2 p.m. and again at 4:30 p.m.

On Sunday, October 22nd the action continues as our Peewee and Bantam Travellers take on the HLK Hearst teams. Peewee games are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and the Bantams faceoff at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The Wawa Minor Hockey Association Family is very excited to be able to provide this fantastic level of hockey to our fans in Wawa. Be sure to support our hard working hockey kids this coming weekend, October 21st and 22nd, and be prepared to be amazed. And bonus, no admission fee!
