Article and Photo By Barb Fisher The Women in Business seminar is held annually sponsored by the Wawa Economic Development Corporation, Millworks Centre, Paro Services and Superior East.

Each year the seminar attracts more and more women who are spreading their horizons and taking an active part in exploring their business ingenue. This year the theme "Tea Party with a Twist" gave the ladies another excuse to mingle, learn and network over dinner, information sharing and activities designed for women to mingle, greet and explore the personal experiences of their fellow entrepreneurs. Maury O'Neill congratulated Mitch Hatfield in the audience who has been successful in filling a seat on our town council; the only female within the council group. Unrehearsed but eager, Mitch took the podium and spoke briefly promising to help everyone in Wawa to progress and feel comfortable in the newly elected council's leadership.

Katherine MacRae representing PARO Services in Women's Enterprise Initiatives gave great information on individual strategies for a woman "growing her business" and outlined their loan application process. Their Peer Lending Circles consist of small groups of up to seven women who

provide networking, peer support, and mentoring to assist women, businesses and communities. Members learn the loan application process for seed start-up and growth, access financial literacy and business development training, adapt to changes in the market place, adopt new technologies and tools, and connect to the greater economy. She tweaked everyone's interest in reiterating the loan availability - up to $150,000 for start-up businesses and flex loans up to $10,000. have supported a cause that directly affects all our oncology patients in Wawa and surrounding areas, parking at the Sault Area Hospital, it costs $6 a visit, and when clients have to go for many different tests and treatments, this cost can add up. With money raised from Cupcakes for a Cure 2018 we have been able to purchase 80 more tokens this year!

Lastly this year, we are pleased to put some of the donations raised to the Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation towards the purchase of new diagnostic equipment. Imaging plays a major role in the diagnosis, treatment and follow up or many types of cancers and having new more sensitive equipment will benefit all.

Over the past four years, I

am very proud of what we as a team have accomplished from the cakers, to the decorators, to the customers and to the supporters we have been able to come together as a community and raise money for many great causes!

This year I would like to thank the Lady Dunn Health Centre for providing our ingredients, the Wawa Family Health Team for providing supplies, Jennifer and Dorris for baking the cupcakes, Judy, Ann and Huguette for your talented decorating skills and our awesome community for your generous donations! This year we ran out of cupcakes after only 1 hour of sales, so we are planning on even a bigger event next year!

Wawa Community Food Bank wishes to thank the many individuals, businesses or groups who have supported our efforts to supplement food essentials for people in need through this fall.

Our community members find many ways to be of assistance through the donation of Valu Mart gift cards, gently used clothing or footwear, pet food, financial contributions and, of course, non- perishable food items. Our appreciation goes to Sue Kirby, Tex Luoma, Ministry of Natural Resources Firefighters, Cathy Pellegrini, Carol Anne Robinson, and Wagging Tails Kennel. We also recognise those who contribute to the designated food bank cart at Valu Mart and to the donation bin inside the doors of 96 Broadway Ave. We would also like to thank The Bargain Shop, manager Nick Veldt and staff and people in the community who donated goods and filled multiple shopping carts with everything from canned fruit, meat and vegetables to cereal and cookies. This came at an opportune time when our shelf stocks were diminished.

Thank you as well to the Bumps, Babies and Beyond Expo, organised by Laura Mitchell, for thinking of us through the generous donation of a cheque, the collection of food items and the proceeds from a door prize jar.

An extra special thank you goes to Austin Fellinger for ensuring that the results of his participation in “Tins and Toonies – Hockey Players Fighting Hunger” came to his home town of Wawa. It is wonderful to see young people supporting local charitable causes.

Once again we acknowledge Ron Ingram of Desbarats Farmers Market for his provision of fresh fruit and vegeta-

bles. These healthy food choices make a welcome difference in the diet of our clients.

Naturally Superior Adventures has been a longtime supporter of our food bank. We gratefully receive the canned goods and funds provided by patrons of the dinners and entertainment initiated by David Wells, Judy Page and staff.

Food Bank volunteers and clients are very appreciative of the efforts of Ford’s We Scare Hunger campaign, which, through the month of October, collects a pick up full of nonperishables. We look forward to the delivery date in early November.

Our biggest community event and fundraiser, Feed The Need, will be held at the Community Centre on Sunday, November 25, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. For a canned food or financial donation, everyone will receive a hot dog from the Lakeview Hotel, hot or cold beverage from John’s Valu Mart or Tim Horton’s, and a cookie from SUBWAY. A ballot for a door prize from Canadian Tire, Styles by Iris Luke, Reiki and Meditation

by Tina Smith, Wawa RV Resort and Campground, and Wagging Tails Kennel will be provided as well as a number of drinks coupons from Macs.

Local musicians will entertain through the afternoon and MNR mascots will be present.

Thank you to all who have attended this family friendly event in the past. If you are wondering what to bring, we suggest any of soup, pasta sauce, pasta, vegetables, brown beans or canned meat, tuna or salmon. Another option might be a new pair of socks for men or women. All donations are gratefully received. We anticipate a great turn out to help us get through the winter ahead.

BFF: Breast Friends Forever! Harte Gold Opens Ontario’s First Article By Crystal Davey, Nurse Practitioner, Former Regional Aboriginal Cancer Lead When First Nations, Inuit, and Metis women are diagnosed with breast cancer, it will likely be at an advanced stage due to late detection.

Cancer found at this stage may have spread to other body parts – which is why it is so important to screen for breast cancer early before there are any symptoms.

Typical risk factors for breast cancer are: being a woman, getting older, family history of breast cancer, personal history of breast cancer, and having dense breast tissue.

Women between the ages of 50 to 74 should have a mammogram every two years. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that is used to screen for breast cancer. During a mammogram, both breasts are compressed between two firm surfaces to spread out the breast tissue to take the X-ray picture. You may experience mild discomfort during a mammogram, but this test is important and could save your life. Mammograms can find lumps that you can’t feel.

You can get a mammogram through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP).

There is no cost for this test and for Indigenous people who have to travel, the costs may be covered by Non-Insured Health Benefits. A referral from a health care provider is not needed for this program.

In celebration of our board’s 20th anniversary, we are profiling on social media, all throughout the month of October, 20 outstanding graduates from our high schools.

I am including below the profiles of two graduates from École secondaire Saint-Joseph in Wawa as I thought you may like to share their success stories on your news platforms.

Jean-François Meloche, École secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa), 2008 Jean-François Meloche was a pioneer student at École secondaire Saint-Joseph, one of the school’s first graduates. After completing his secondary school education he attended Collège Boréal, where he studied 2D/3D animation. In spite of his positive experience at Collège Boréal, his childhood dream of becoming a pilot never left him, and steered him toward studies in the field of aviation in Thunder Bay. After completing his program there, Jean-François returned to

Sudbury and a pilot instructor’s course then left for Cornwall where he took classes in multiengine aircraft. Since the completion of his studies he has worked as a flight instructor in Nova Scotia, as well as in Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury. Thanks to his French-language education, JeanFrançois can train student pilots in both languages.

Victoria Hall, École secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa), 2008 Victoria Hall, who was among the first graduates of the École secondaire catholique SaintJoseph in Wawa, enrolled at Ottawa University, where she received a B.Sc. with a major in nutrition sciences. Subsequent to successful placements at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the Ottawa Hospital and Health Canada, Victoria received

her designation as a Registered Nutritionist. This daughter of the North wanted to return to her region and accepted a public health position at the Porcupine Health Unit.

As a public health nutritionist, Victoria is a specialist in prenatal, early childhood and breastfeeding nutrition, as well as food insecurity and health equity. Her passion for cooking and commitment to her community extends to volunteer activities with variety of endeavours such as community gardens, cooking programs and fundraising for local groups.

Victoria often goes back to Wawa to visit her former teachers, who continue to mentor her—especially at Christmas Dinner.

BFF: Breast Friends Forever!

By Crystal Davey, Nurse Practitioner, Former Regional Aboriginal Cancer Lead When First Nations, Inuit, and Metis women are diagnosed with breast cancer, it will likely be at an advanced stage due to late detection. Cancer found at this stage may have spread to other body parts – which is why it is so important to screen for breast cancer early before there are any symptoms.

Typical risk factors for breast cancer are: being a woman, getting older, family history of breast cancer, personal history of breast cancer, and having dense breast tissue.

Women between the ages of 50 to 74 should have a mammogram every two years. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that is used to screen for breast cancer. During a mammogram, both breasts are compressed between two firm surfaces to spread out the breast tissue to take the X-ray picture. You may experience mild discomfort during a mammogram, but this test is important and could save your life. Mammograms can find lumps that you can’t feel.

You can get a mammogram through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP).

There is no cost for this test and for Indigenous people who have to travel, the costs may be covered by Non-Insured Health Benefits. A referral from a health care provider is not needed for this program. Hughes Raises Transportation Concerns At Minister’s Consultation Meeting Ottawa – Transportation links that service northern and rural communities cannot be treated as an afterthought by the government according to Algoma-ManitoulinKapuskasing, MP carol Hughes.

Hughes raised these concerns at a consultation meeting with the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport as she pointed out that the department’s focus on transportation has been geared towards urban centres at the expense of more isolated communities.

“The government has plans for transportation in urban settings, but some of the most pressing needs are actually in smaller communities, “said Hughes. “Many of these places are no longer serviced by buses or trains and the trend to reduced or lost service isn’t showing any sign of reversing.”

Hughes mentioned the plight of individuals, businesses, and even those providing or accessing health care services in rural and northern settings to illustrate how a lack of investment and leadership coupled with lost services from buses and trains is creating a patchwork that shuts out many parts of Canada.

“Businesses and medical service providers that relied on buses to transport goods and lab samples have lost that option,”

said Hughes. “Lost services also unfairly impact seniors, Indigenous communities, and those who don’t have access to a vehicle.”

Hughes raised issues and impacts that stem from the cessation of Greyhound service to many communities. Other topics of discussion included Pilot shortage and Marine Pilotage.

“The shortfalls in many parts of Canada underline the need for a comprehensive National Transportation Strategy,” said Hughes. “That would include passenger train service such as the Bear Train that the Missanabie Cree First Nation and the Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains and are working toward that would return passenger services between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst.

Hughes reminded Transport Canada officials of their mandate to serve the public interest through promotion of a safe and secure, efficient and environmentally responsible transportation system in Canada. She also advised the government that they have a role to play in ensuring rural and northern transportation options are viable.

“They need to remember they have a responsibility to all Canadians,” said Hughes. “Right now that doesn’t seem to be their focus.”

A Halloween Story

I enjoy Halloween, even more now as an adult than as a kid. As always, this year I decorated my house inside and outside with the usual symbols. Inside included a skeleton, a ghost, a pumpkin, and candles. To set the mood, I had a small lamp on top of the china hutch with an orange glow. That would greet the trick or treaters.

My bowl of candies potato chips and pop was on the dining room table, with a couple of candles beside it. Mood again, you know.

In the front porch entrance, I had a 'flying' black bat, a screaming clown, a back wreath made of skeleton heads, another smaller skeleton, and finally my lit pumpkin to greet the kids. The porch was lit up with a nice yellow light to add to the eerie mood. Outside I had two hanging ghouls, a pumpkin, & 2 large hanging skeletons – one seated in a chair and the other tied to my birch tree in the front yard.

The centre piece was an imitation cemetery grave site, complete with a picket fence with skeleton faces, and a sign of old wood that I found in the bush, advising which way to the cemetery, and which way to the treats. I have this lit up with a yellow-coloured floodlight, in order to accentuate the grave as well as the decorated front window. I thought it looked spooky enough for Halloween. I found out it was.

I bought lots of goodies for the 'treats', just to avoid any 'tricks', so I was ready. And what the kids didn't get, all the more for me afterwards, right!

I dressed up in a costume of Count Dracula, complete with cape and false fangs, streaked with blood. I hoped it would have the effect of scaring both the little and teenager kids.

They started coming about 6:30 p.m. It worked for some of the more timid youngsters. As soon as I would open the door, they would scream and run back to their parents who were standing out on the street. I would laugh and wave to them. The parents were not amused as they comforted their child as they headed up the street.

Other kids were not fazed at all, and stood their ground with their pillow or plastic pumpkin pail outstretched, calling out and waiting for their 'treat'. I was a bit disappointed at their reaction, but I knew that was all part of what I could expect as the night wore on.

The slightly older kids came when it was still a bit light outside, despite it being cloudy, with a slight drizzle coming down – just what you would expect to set the mood for the occasion. That was about 7:00 pm when they starting showing up. The first one came into the porch by himself.

I guess he was about 10 years old. He was dressed as a pirate.

I complimented him on his great costume, but asked him where his parrot was that always sat on their right shoulder. He just shrugged and said his trick or treat mantra as I turned sideways and grabbed a fistful of candy out of the bowl on my dining room table. When I turned back to hand him his candy, he was shaking and he had big bulging eyes. I could hardly get his 'treat' put in his plastic pumpkin pail before he turned around and ran down the driveway, and up the street. I thought that was odd.

As I closed the door I remember thinking that it must be getting awfully cold out, as there certainly was a cold draft swirling around the porch.

I went back to the living room and sat down and watched TV while I waited for the next kids to come.

It was dark by the time the next ones knocked on the door. When I opened the front door, they called out the obligatory 'trick or treat' greeting. They were 2 girls about 12 years old, I guessed. One was dressed as Dorothy from the movie 'Wizard of Oz', and the other was the wicked witch. Dorothy was cute in her blond curly wig, frilly dress, and bright red shoes. She even had Toto, obviously her own dog, to complete the look. The wicked witch came with a broom, pointed hat, and black jacket, pants and shoes. She had her face made up with a wart on her nose. Again I commented on their costumes, and asked if they were sisters.

They nodded yes. I turned away from them for just a second to get the candy for Dorothy. Then just as I turned around, I heard this high-pitched scream coming from the 2 girls, and a guttural growl from the dog, as they made a mad dash across my lawn and down the street. I heard them call out to a group of kids coming towards my place: “Get out of here. That house is creepy! It's haunted!”

I was puzzled by what they said as I poked my head out of the porch. Again there was that cold air swirling around. I left the porch door opened, and went inside, closing the front door behind me while I waited for that group to get here.

They arrived shortly. They were teenagers, about 16 to 18, years old, I guessed. They were not too imaginative in their costumes – just out for the candy. The first two to block the doorway were guys.

One was dressed in baggy jeans, with chains hanging from his pockets. I asked him what his costume was about. He just shrugged and mumbled something about being a rapper – at least I think that's what he said. I just said a blunt oh, as I handed out a pop. The second one was a little more imaginative. He was supposed to be an axe murderer. He had an axe in one hand, and his pillowcase in the other one. He had what I presume was ketchup on his face, on his jacket, on the axe handle and left hand.

He had dark circles under his eyes, to make him look like a mad man.

I presumed he borrowed the makeup from his mother or girl friend.

Very effective. Full marks for him.

As I handed him his 'treats', I saw them turn their heads to look at each other, and with bulging eyes they swallowed real hard as they moved out of the way, in order to make room for the others.

The next two were girls. One was dressed in a really short skirt, with fishnet stockings and high heels. She was obviously going for the hooker look. The second girl had a short white skirt and bib. She was carrying a duster, so I presume she was trying to imitate a French Maid. Very provocative, I commented. She curtsied and said thank you in a sexy voice. I gave them each a fistful of candies, and a tin of pop too. Gotta be friends or sisters, to come up with similar costumes., I surmised.

Then the 'hooker'-costumed girl said to me - “Boy, your friend behind you there is really dressed up well, right down to that putrid smell of rotting flesh. Does he have a bag of garbage tucked under his shirt?” I turned around to look behind me to see who she was referring to, but I saw no one. But I did notice that putrid smell that she had mentioned. “I must remember to take out my garbage tonight when I take down my displays,” I commented to myself. I felt a chill go up and down my spine as I turned back to face her.

I said to her, “I don't know what you mean. I am here all by myself.” She replied in a tone of disbelief. “Sure you are. I saw him. He just vanished into the dark kitchen as you turned around.

Don't know how you did it, but a good 'trick' on us”.

Then a fifth teen barged in between the two girls. He raised his arms to his head and thrust them out towards me. Then he began to jerk himself closer to me. I realized he was imitating the Zombie shuffle. His costume and facial makeup was very convincing. The others backed away to let him do his thing. But just as he reached inside the porch he dropped his hands, and with a terrified look in his face, he screamed, dropped his plastic bag of candy and pop that he had already collected. He turned and ran right into the rest of them who were standing in a huddle out on the driveway. They all screamed, and stumbled over themselves as they tried to get untangled.

“What do you think you're doing”, “Watch it!”, “Get off me”, etc were comments uttered in the confusion. Once they got up, the Zombie declared, “Holy Crap, there was a real Zombie coming right towards me with blazing red eyes, and an axe in his forehead and those arms stretched out towards me, and his boney hands... brrr. I could feel those claws around my neck, and I felt like I was being choked. I'm freezing now. Let's get out of here!”, he declared as they all began to run away. His bag of 'treats' still lay on the floor of my porch. I called after him to come back and pick it up, but they just hurried up the street into the dark.

I began picking up his loot. I was shaken too, and scared at their carryon. It was just another trick these kids were playing on me, I thought, mostly to calm myself.

I continued with these thoughts, uttering to myself that kids were getting so creative these days – not just content to get 'treats'. They were doing the 'tricks' too. I noticed that the porch was even colder now than before, and that putrid rotten smell seemed even stronger now too, as I closed the door.

I felt uneasy as I sat back down in my lounge chair in the living room. I had this funny feeling that I was being watched from behind, and eyes were burrowing right into the back of my head. I tried to block that sensation by trying to concentrate on what was on TV. I had on the movie 'Halloween'.

But my nerves were too frayed to keep it on. I quickly moved on. One channel had the movie ” Nightmare on Elm Street” , so I quickly passed that one by. I finally settling on 'The Big Bang Theory'.

I needed the laughs right now. It was 9 p.m.

I was pretty sure there would be no more kids, so I got up at 9:30 to start shutting off the lights, and getting ready to go outside to take down the reminders of the night.

First, I turned out the dining room and porch lights. I began taking down the inside decorations. I

went out to the kitchen to put away the 'treats'. Then I began to walk towards the front door to go outside. I could see the light of the kitchen reflecting in the window of the front door. I was just about to reach for my jacket on the coat rack on the wall in the foyer, when I froze in horror. There in the archway between the dining room and kitchen stood a real live zombie, complete with those red blazing eyes, bloody mouth, axe in the forehead, and tattered clothes, just like that kid described earlier that night. Suddenly it began waddling towards me, arms stretched out with the clawed hands, like in that Freddie Kreuger movie.. I panicked, fumbling to open the front door, and ran onto the lawn, right into a thick fog that had developed from the earlier drizzle.

I hid behind the big birch tree in the front of my yard, and turned towards the porch to see if he was still coming – or was I just imagining it? The imagination can sure run away with you on such a night!

But it was no figment of my imagination. He came shuffling out through the door and stood on my porch stoop. He was just six feet away, and I prayed he didn't look my way. He stopped, looked around, and then to my relief, headed to his left, towards my front window. I quickly moved to the other side of the tree, and peeked out hesitantly. I watched in disbelief at the sight that I was seeing. He just faded away into the fog, right into the ground that I had fenced off to resemble a grave.

I stared at the spot for the longest time, waiting to see if it would rise back out of its' grave. But I eventually got cold and wet, and I forced myself to move. I took down my flying ghouls, turned off the floodlight, and finally moved over to take down the skeleton- painted picket fence that made the grave site. I quickly pulled them apart, while looking all around me to see if anything popped up. I put them away in the garage, and dashed back inside with the other decorations. I looked over my shoulder as I quickly shut and locked the doors.

Thankfully there were no more occurrences. The cold air and rotten smell had gone too. I was safe for this year now I hoped. I took off my wet costume and hung it up in the bathroom. However, I could not get up enough nerve to sit back in my lounge chair, so I turned off the TV in the living room, and went to bed, instead turning on the TV there. I came across the Movie Channel featuring a marathon of Dracula movies. I began to relax, laughing at the attempt to be scary, but was just corny. I soon got bored with it. I started to feel drowsy after ten minutes or so.

But still it took me a long time to get to sleep last night, I assure you – especially knowing who or what was possibly laying right outside my bedroom window.

Then in the middle of the night, I woke with a start as I heard the floorboards creak and someone whispering my name. The voice seemed to be coming from the window. I nearly had a heart attack as my blind suddenly flapped up, revealing the shadow of a figure staring at me.

I was paralyzed in fear. As my eyes adjusted to the light, I realized it looked like that Zombie I had seen disappear into my makeshift grave. I must have awakened the dead by putting up that fence and creepy sign that said Freddie Kruger lay there. I vowed that I wouldn't be doing that next year, for sure!

that because slowly the window steamed up. Then eerily I watched as his finger began to etch a message . When he was finished, it blared out a very ominous message: LEAVE THIS PLACE! It stayed there for several seconds before it evaporated and the figure faded away, seemingly right through the wall. I felt the cold again, and that putrid smell wafted through the room, before suddenly disappearing too. Everything returned to normal. I left the blind up, as I was not going anywhere near that appearance. I was freaked out by all of this. My brain was going a mile a minute trying to comprehend it all. I rationalized that I was just having a nightmare.

That would be perfectly understandable, considering what happened last night. So to calm myself down I turned on the radio on my bed stand, and pulled the covers over my head. I did not want to see or hear anything else. It was a sleepless rest of the night. I stirred about 6:00 a.m. I had to go to the bathroom desperately. I just could not wait a moment later, although I was terrified to look out, dreading what I might see.

But my bladder won out. Once I had relieved myself I dashed back to bed. I stayed there until nearly 8:00 am. By then it was getting light. It was still drizzling, just perfect for my mood. In the afternoon of that November 1, 2017 the rain and drizzle stopped, but it is a dull day. It still leaves me with a dread of what might happen at my house on Halloween night next year, especially after what happened last night. I stepped outside when I saw my neighbour across the street out cleaning up a pumpkin that had been smashed in his driveway. Kids! I looked at my lawn to make sure I had everything cleaned up from last night, or had any eggs or pumpkins smashed like he did. I stopped dead in my tracks, as I stared at the brown dead grass exactly where I had made that grave site. I shook my head and forced myself to move across the street. During our conversation I was telling him about my night. He has lived here for 40 years or more. He told me that there had been a murder at the house on Halloween night about 35 years ago. A single guy by the name of Freddie Kruger had been murdered and buried in the front yard, co-incidentally just under the front window, by his brother.

The police eventually solved the case by getting his brother Donnie to confess and tell them where Freddie's body was. When they dug up the body, the first thing they saw was a hatchet buried in the forehead. They remarked on the gruesome sight of seeing Freddie's bulging open eyes filled with sand.

His mouth was wide open too and also filled with sand. It haunted them for the rest of their lives, my neighbour declared. Now that image is engraved in my mind too.

What a nightmare! Yes, it was a Halloween to remember.

Well it is now Halloween night of 2018, and I have put up my grave site again, along with the other decorations that I have been using for years. Last year was just a fluke, I am sure. There won't be any ghouls, goblins, ghosts or anything scary, will there????? Am I tempting fate? I will soon find out, as the first of the kids are coming now.....

Speaking of which, Happy Halloween, folks. Beware of the little ghosts and goblins out tonight. Hand out those 'treats'.

No 'tricks', please. Have a safe and fun night, everyone!

The Rotary Club of Wawa wishes to thank the Wawa Goose Club for providing the venue for the END POLIO NOW bake sale held on the afternoon of October 24th.

The club also waived their portion of the proceeds, for which we are very grateful. Together we raised approximately $600.00.

October 24th was Rotary International’s End Polio Now Day, world wide. All clubs in the world, over 35,000 in 200 countries jointly made an effort to raise funds specifically for Polio Eradication.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pledged two dollars for every dollar raised In Canada, and our Federal Government also donates one dollar for each dollar raised, so every dollar donated becomes

four. This means that the $600 raised by the Rotary Club of Wawa will become $2400.00.

For an entire country to be declared Polio free, it must have no polio cases for three consecutive years. Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan are still to be declared polio-free. The good news is that Nigeria has already gone two years without any cases of polio being detected. Hopefully, this time next year it will also be off the list.

We must still immunize every child three times per year in Afghanistan and Pakistan. These two countries have large populations living in remote areas under non-democratic rules, along with many other challenges that make it difficult to achieve the neces-

sary immunization.

Once polio is eradicated, it cannot return. It is like Small pox, in that once it is gone it cannot return.

We must think like a marathon runner. We are in the last mile of this marathon, we are tired, sore, and there is yet another hill to climb. So we take a deep breath, focus, draw on all of our strength and we know that we will succeed.

This is END POLIO month.

There are donation boxes on the counters of many businesses around town. We ask you to be generous and help us with this last hurdle. We will be picking them up at the end of October.

News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP Recently while making the most of a rare opportunity to be back home for a weekend, I had a chance to catch up with a young acquaintance I’ve known for quite some time. As a result of the numerous casual chats that have had with this young adult, I have really come to respect her innate intelligence, sensibility and contagious positive outlook on life. Recently she told me she was in the market to purchase her first car. I was expecting her to tell me she wanted to get some sporty zoom-zoom vehicle to bomb around in with her friends and family. I was somewhat surprised (although I should not have been knowing her) to hear her say that her primary focus was on reliability and stability on the road.

On my drive back to Toronto last weekend our conversation came to mind again. It occurred to me that actually, reliability and stability is what most of us seek in our lives, be it a car, a home, a partner, a parent, a business, our employment and, of course, our government.

We all need that sense of confidence so that we know we can count on certain things in our lives.

Later in the week, Andrea Horwath was invited to speak at the Ontario Economic Summit in Niagara-onthe Lake. She pointed out that stability is what Ontario business leaders favour. In order for them to have any real chance for growth and longevity they need to be able to make reasonable forecasts and projections so that they can keep costs down and prices reasonable for optimum long term profitability. They need to know they can count on certain things being stable. But Andrea pointed out that such is not what Ontario business leaders are seeing with Doug Ford’s Conservative government.

What they are seeing instead is a government that has no qualms in ripping up hundreds of legally signed contracts with businesses, taking away their legal recourse to challenge the government, and cancelling university expansion investments without warning.

Andrea said, “Businesses, investors, and workers deserve to know

what to expect in the next quarter, the next year, and the next five years. No surprises. No secrets.”

Doug Ford’s way of doing things is having a chilling effect on businesses that want to expand or invest in our great province. The businesses have long said that stability and predictability is what they want from all levels of government, of all political stripes. I personally agree with the business community when they say they are growing increasingly concerned that that’s not what we’re getting from the Ford government.

We need a government that will make it easy for people to invest in Ontario by presenting a roadmap for growth and then see it through. As a northerner I know that includes delivering broadband in communities like ours here in Algoma-Manitoulin so that we can be connected with the rest of the province. It also means maintaining our infrastructure and making sure people can afford to use it.

And it means investing in our most valuable resources such as our students and our labourers so they can access the services they need to build a great life here, the opportunity they need to build a great career here, close to home.

A prime example of this is the surprise attack on the green energy industry with the cancelation of the GreenON program. This misguided decision leaves companies scrambling to adjust or even to survive. It’s the same for companies that manufacture or sell energy efficient windows as well as contractors who do such installations.

These businesses anticipated stability and growth in this sector, making plans and training and hiring workers to take advantage of the business opportunity.

Education, like the business world, counts on reliability and stability. Just days ago both educators and private sector partners were surprised by Doug Ford’s move to scrap three university extension campuses underway at York University’s in Markham, Wilfrid Laurier University’s in Milton, and the Brampton campus of Ryerson

University. These schools and communities were confident and anticipated increased investment, more university-educated workers and more economic activity. So much for their business plans.

Scrapping these campuses now is outright shameful and will undercut the futures of thousands of students. It is not only a waste of the time and money already invested but a waste of the valuable opportunity we have to expand Ontario's capacity for research, innovation and excellence in a number of fields. Doug Ford's decision to rip opportunity away from thousands of students is callous, and is a major blow to job creation and economic activity in for all Ontarians. Students need more opportunities to build their best lives here in Ontario, not less. If this can happen so easily in the GTA, what chance do we have here in the North?

Doug Ford has been announcing to anyone who will listen that under his leadership that, “Ontario is open for business. But you know, I don’t care how big or bright the “Open” sign is on Ontario’s door. If the business world has no confidence in our reliability and stability, that sign is not going to be swinging from incoming traffic wanting to set up shop here.

Remember – library membership is FREE to residents of the Municipality of Wawa and contracting communities. We can also issue a non-resident a library card for a fee of $10.00 per month or $95.00 per year. This is a great option for a family member or friend that may be visiting.
