Legion Hosts Music Night Iris Place Fundraiser Article & photos by Barb Fisher I never tire of listening to our talented home-grown musicians when making their sweet music together. Our Legion hosted a great evening of music and community mingling last Saturday night in a fundraising event to support Iris Place and all the great work they do for our community.

Iris Place, located at the intersection of Broadway and Mackey St., a very welcomed drop-in centre for adult individuals with mental health and addiction issues, provides: • recreational and social activities; • peer support services; • daily hot lunches at noon; • transportation to medical appointments.

A cozy group sat back in the Legion lounge and enjoyed the oldies but goodies in the best of country tunes by the "Goodtimers". Vocalists Keith Killins on guitar and Jeannett Pike on keyboard brought back tunes never forgotten accompanied by Paul Bernath on bass and Will Smith on guitar. cased his musical talent and with his guitar performed his songs in the french language.

The entertainment was momentarily paused to present Deb Lessard, the Team Lead at Iris Place, with a basket of bath products in appreciation of all she accomplishes in running Iris Place. Door prizes were drawn throughout the evening and the lucky winners went home with some great prizes. Deb explained the programs offered at Iris Place and added that the friends that visit the centre are much appreciative of how it has changed their lives. A simple gesture can make all the difference in one's life, as in the other day someone had generously donated eggs and fresh steak and the lunch that day will never be forgotten.

Returning to the musical entertainment, our never tiring Don Charbonneau joining with Dawn and Rebecca, two of the Whiskey Jill trio, gave us all pause to reflect on what we all enjoy in living in our neck of the woods. The evening was still young and DJ Kilotile took over the music selections with requests fulfilled.

Dental Hygienist Open For Business Article by Barb Fisher, photos supplied Emma Desgagne has been working diligently to offer quality care in our dental care services and now has two clinics open and ready to serve; one here in Wawa at 96 Broadway and the other in Dubreuilville in the Medical Centre 851 Rue St. Joseph.

Originally from the Phillipines, Emma first lived in Dubreuilville when emigrating to Canada and has since made Wawa her home for many years. After graduating from Confederation College in Thunder Bay as a Registered Dental Hygienist, Emma worked with Dr. Michael Chauvin at the Wawa Dental Centre until his retirement and is very grateful for all the guidance and encouragement given by Dr. Chauvin, Dr. Mark Owen and Anne Owen. Emma has now fulfilled her ambition as a Dental Hygienist running her own business and opened up her practice first in Dubreuilville and then an additional clinic here in Wawa. Emma extends much appreciation to Shelley Casey in Dubreuilville who was instrumental in helping her to get started in her business venture where a dental clinic was all set up and waiting for an industrious individual to get it running again.

Emma has a very talented and capable assistant in her daughter Thea who has worked hard securing her own future with a diploma as a Social Service Worker from Northern College in Timmins and a diploma as a Pharmacist Technician from Soo College in the Soo. Although Emma has had her dental hygienist credentials for 32 years, she is very proud to add Self-initiation to her title since 2012. In 2007 dental hygienists have achieved independence after a 14-year campaign to remove the restrictions that tie dental hygiene to dentistry. The McGinty government working with the Ontario Dental Hygiene Association fulfilled

its 2003 election promise to improve access to preventive oral care services by allowing dental hygienists the freedom to clean teeth without a procedural "order" from a dentist, subject to regulatory college regulations and standards of practice.

Emma offers a wide range of dental health needs: • oral hygiene assessment check ups • scaling - removal of soft and hard deposits - calculus and tartar • polishing and removing stains • fluoride treatments • desensitizing root surfaces • oral hygiene instructions • diet analysis and counselling for teeth health • pit and fissure sealants • fabricating mouthguards, whitening and bleaching trays.

Maintaining good oral health requires collaboration and Emma has the mandate to confer with other health-care professionals, including dentists, physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and make referrals when appropriate.

Notes From The Bird Lady Article and Photos by Tammie Hache Manitouwadge, ON bthache@yahoo.ca I'm finally starting to see a few fall migrants; not many yet, but a few. One or two Warblers, a few Ruby Crowned Kinglet flocks. The main one I've noticed so far is the American Pipit. These are Sparrow-sized birds, grayishgreenish with a fair amount of breast striping. Their outer tail feathers are white and they bob those tails up & down.

You will see them on lawns, roadsides and on highways at this time of year. They are not be confused with Snow Buntings though, which are stockier and have more white & brown in them. I haven't seen any Snow Buntings yet but they'll be coming through any day now. Watch for them in huge flocks along the highways & roadways.

I now have 3 Blue Jays that have returned to my platform feeder for the winter. I don't know where they go in the summer but I never see them.

I sometimes hear them in summer but they don't come to the yard. Last winter, I had a high count of 10 one day but I normally see 3 or 4 daily throughout winter.

I still have a small flock of White Throated Sparrows, Song Sparrows and Dark Eyed Juncos in the yard, under the feeders & in the flowerbeds. There are still

huge flocks of Grackles and Starlings throughout the region (and sometimes my yard!). Right now, I'm not seeing much else aside from

Crows & Chickadees. I expect activity to pick up in the coming month as temperatures drop & the white stuff threatens. I'm sincerely hoping the Ruffed Grouse will return to the yard very soon for another winter. They've been spending winters visiting my yard for the past 5 or 6 years and I look so forward to it. They are my #1 draw for viewers of the webcam too.

I've been hearing reports about various species throughout the region like Horned Larks, various Hawks, White Crowned Sparrows, Fox Sparrows, etc. but have yet to see any myself.

Hopefully, they are all on their way.

École Saint-Joseph

Célébration De La Journée Des Franco-Ontariens À Wawa Wawa Celebrates Franco-Ontarian Day On September 27th, École Saint-Joseph (Wawa) celebrated Franco-Ontarian Day with a great deal of passion!

Students from Kindergarten to grade 12 proudly wore green and white clothing and participated in many activities at school. A barbecue lunch was served to students and staff as part of festivities. Students were also able to enjoy a huge piece of cake decorated with the colours of the Franco-Ontarian flag.

Franco-Ontarian day, celebrated officially since 2010, took place on September 25th.

The date marks the anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag, which was flown for the first time in Sudbury in 1975.

Students and staff from École Saint-Joseph take great pride in celebrating our flag’s 41st anniversary. While recognizing our Francophone and Catholic heritage, this activity promotes the excellence and dedication of our students and staff as they seek to widen their Francophone space and fully live their culture in the province of Ontario.

Un dîner barbecue gratuit a été offert à tous les élèves et aux membres du personnel. Les élèves ont pu, entre autre, savourer le gros gâteau représentant le drapeau franco-ontarien.

La journée provinciale des Franco-Ontariennes et des Franco-Ontariens est célébrée officiellement depuis 2010. La date retenue pour cette célébration — le 25 septembre — coïncide avec l’anniversaire du drapeau franco-ontarien, qui a flotté pour la première fois en 1975. Les élèves et le personnel de l’École SaintJoseph sont fiers de pouvoir célébrer avec entrain, le jour du 41e anniversaire de notre drapeau. Tout en célébrant notre riche héritage catholique et francophone, cette activité valorisera le dynamisme et l’engagement de nos élèves et de notre personnel, qui tiennent à élargir leur espace francophone et à vivre leur culture pleinement dans la province de l’Ontario.

Students, staff, parents and friends assembled on the school athletic field and took part in the 2016 Terry Fox Run. This fund-raising activity was organized by Mr. Mark Szekely, École Saint-Joseph teacher, and grade 11 and 12 physical education students.

With great weather, motivating Francophone music, walkers had the perfect conditions for the event and the 5 kilometre was completed with enthusiasm. Teery Fox, your dream and legacy lives on at École Saint-Joseph in Wawa.

AFS Foundation Wants You To Go Green On October 5th For Mental lllness Awareness Week!

Algoma Family Services (AFS) Foundation is inviting community organizations, businesses and individuals to show their support for those living with a mental illness on Wednesday, October 5th. As part of our #MIAW2016 campaign, we ask that you wear green – the official colour of mental illness/health – on October 5th to show your support for those experiencing mental health challenges as a

result of living with a mental illness. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about mental illness in our community and eliminate the stigma that surrounds it.

Those looking to get involved have the option of raising pledges, in addition to wearing green. Pledges raised from #MIAW2016, will help benefit the thousands of children and youth in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District

that experience mental illness.

Businesses and organizations are encouraged to get creative in their way of raising pledges.

There will be prizes awarded to the group that raises the most funds, as well as to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the campaign.

Thousands of Canadians are living with a mental illness but many do not receive the adequate services they require.

News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP

There is no shortage of news coming out of Queen’s Park in the last couple of weeks.

Watching the evening news is akin to watching a province wide convention of illusionists trying to amuse and mystify the masses. Recently it seems that every time you turn around another minister is behind a podium announcing some new program or grant that the Liberals promise will save the province. But when people look to see what is REALLY going down, it’s a “now you see it, now you don’t” situation. This sleight of hand show is all very entertaining and I plan to address it in days to come. However, this week I want to draw your attention to another matter in which I had the honour of participating.

On September 17th, I was invited by the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 5 in Chapleau to attend a ceremonial unveiling of a monument dedicated to the honour of Sergeant Charles Henry Byce.

Charles Byce was born March 8th, 1917 in Chapleau in Chapleau Ontario while his father, Henry Byce, was fighting in Europe during WWI. Charles’ mother, Louisa, a Cree from Moose Factory had married Henry who was non-indigenous.

At 23 years of age, Byce signed up in the military with the Lake Superior Regiment.

Charles went on to serve in WWII. As a result of his actions on the battlefield in January 1945 in Holland, Byce was awarded the British Military Medal. Then, just a few weeks later he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for the demonstration of his extreme bravery in Germany. This makes Charles Byce Canada’s most highly decorated Indigenous soldier of WWII. I understand that only 162 Canadians were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal during WWII and only 9 Canadians were awarded both medals as he was. It is also interesting to note that his father, Henry Byce, a hero in his own right, was one of those who also earned both medals. You can find a video of a my statement on the legislature from September 15th on You Tube at: https://goo.gl/eVCpYF It was with honour that I joined RCL Br. 5, descendants of Charles Byce, the Ontario Native Education Counselling Association, and several other contributing groups in a ceremony to unveil a monument to acknowledge this man’s outstanding contribu-

tion and honour his memory.

I want to encourage everyone to consider attending a Remembrance Day ceremony in your community on this November 11th.

In other news, in the Legislature this week I rose to make a statement on the matter of nuisance black bears in Northern Ontario. My office has noted an increase in the number of calls and letters received from constituents complaining that their property is being damaged, doors are being ripped off and even reports of bears climbing on the roofs of homes.

Parents report they are afraid to let their children walk down lanes and roads to go to school or to school bus stops. Seniors experiencing even slightly limited mobility express fear to go for walks in backyards or parks for fear of getting trapped between a mother and her cubs.

Northerners are tired of receiving obvious advice such as keeping BBQs clean and garbage inaccessible when they call MNRF for help. Without out other viable alternatives at their disposal, people are being forced to adopt a strategy of “shoot-shovel and shut-up” is the result of this ineffective approach by the Liberal government. Will CRA Get It Right This Time?

The Canada Revenue Agency is stating that it won’t be cutting any deals for individuals named in the Panama Papers leaks, which is a welcome change. One only has to think back to the KPMG scheme that broke last winter to get a sense of how wealthy individuals were given the kid-glove treatment and offered a second chance.

Compare that to the experience of most Canadians who are routinely named by the CRA and the differences are stark.

In case you aren’t aware, the Panama Papers are an enormous amount of leaked documents that detail financial and private information for over 200,000 offshore entities that originated from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. The information, leaked to a German journalist, was available in a searchable database and embarrassed a number of prominent people, including then British Prime Minister, David Cameron and even forced Iceland’s Prime Minister to resign. The person who leaked the papers hoped to highlight how Fonseca’s shell companies may have been used for illegal purposes, including fraud, kleptocracy (government by those who seek chiefly status and personal gain at the expense of the governed), tax evasion, and evading international sanctions.

Compared to the Panama Papers, the KPMG scandal was small. In that case the company sought out wealthy Canadians with the promise of no tax being applied to their investments. When the news broke, the CRA quickly offered amnesty to individuals named in the scandal. The sad thing is that this amounts to standard operating procedure for CRA making impos-

sible to know the identity of well-to-do Canadians or corporations who have settled with the agency for schemes like KPMG. The CRA claims to be protecting their privacy. But, again, ordinary Canadians are regularly named and shamed on the agency’s website.

With the Panama Papers, the agency has the chance to turn the corner and apply consistent treatment for tax cheats no matter how much they’re worth, but will they do it? According to the Minister of National Revenue, they will. She states that CRA will work to “identify and curb tax schemes and to bring those who choose to participate in such tactics to justice.” To show they are doing their job the CRA recently announced that they are auditing more than 750 individuals suspected of hiding assets offshore and conducting 20 criminal investigations for the same reason. They won’t speak specifically about the Panama Papers beyond saying there are audits and criminal investigation being undertaken.

The government has allocated money to hire new auditors, but it is unknown if those will even replace the ones the Conservatives let go.

Even then, the department works at a snail’s pace. To give an example, it took six years to investigate 106 accounts from the 2007 Liechtenstein tax scandal. In the end they collected $8 million in taxes owed. Also, if it weren’t for voluntary admissions, the agency wouldn’t be able to boast that it is collecting more hidden money than ever. Perhaps those admissions have more to do with embarrassing leaks than any fear of the tax man when CRA has been anything but fearsome for a long time - if you’ve got a lot to hide that is.

The Crime Scene ___________________ la scène du crime

Traffic Stop Lands BC Man Criminal Charges (WAWA, ON) – On Thursday September 29, 2016 at approximately 7:30 am officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were on general patrols Highway 17, Alanan Township when they stopped a motor vehicle for a Highway Traffic Act infraction. Further investigation revealed that the motor vehicle in question had been reported stolen from the Winnipeg Manitoba area.

As a result Robert NORTON (41) of Abbotsford British Columbia was arrested and charged with the following offences; • Adult- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 in Canada contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada, • Adult Breach of Recognizance contrary to section 811 of the C.C.C. The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa Ontario on November 7, 2016.

OPP Arrest Male For Theft At R.I.D.E Check (WAWA, ON) – On Wednesday September 28, 2016 at approximately 8:30 p.m. officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Detachments were advised of a theft of gas from a local Wawa gas station.

Further investigation revealed that the male driver was also responsible for a theft of gas in the Bruce Mines area. A description of the motor vehicle in question and the male driver was broadcast for police information.

At approximately 9:30 pm the motor vehicle was observed approaching a R.I.D.E Program set up in White River Ontario.

As a result Gregory CARLTON (45) of Hatchet Lake Nova Scotia was arrested and charged with the following offences; • Adult- Possession of Property Obtained by

Crime Over $5,000 in Canada contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada, • Adult- Theft Under $5,000 contrary to section 334(b) of the CCC, • Adult- Driving While DisqualifiedCourt Order contrary to section 259(4) of the CCC. The accused was held for a bail hearing in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario on Thursday September 29, 2016.

White River Man Charged With Theft (WHITE RIVER, ON) – On Wednesday September 28, 2016 at approximately 3:50 pm officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East White River Detachment responded to a White River address regarding a stolen motor vehicle complaint. Police were given a description of both the motor vehicle in question and the male person responsible for the theft.

Police made an immediate patrol of the area and were able to locate the motor vehicle travelling south bound on Highway 631 in the White River Township.

As a result Carl LANDRY (19) of White River Ontario was arrested and charged with the following offence; • Adult Theft Over $5,000 of a motor vehicle contrary to section 334(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa Ontario on November 7, 2016.

Break And Enter To Several Seasonal Residences Have You Secured Your Cottage?

(GOULAIS TOWNSHIP, ON) – On September 30, 2016 Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated four break and enters to cottages and outbuildings located in the 1000 – 1200 block of Haviland Shores Drive and one in the 1200 block of Marlette Drive.

These break-in’s occurred between September 28 – 30, 2016. Cottages were entered by kicking in doors or breaking windows. Once inside suspects caused damage to the interior furniture. An Emerson 42 inch TV and a black and decker cordless drill were stolen from one cottage.

Cottages and summer homes are most vulnerable to thieves and subject to damage or vandalism in the off-season especially if no one living at it or checking it regularly in the fall, winter or spring.

If you own a cottage or other rural seasonal property OPP advise the following: • Secure your windows and doors.

• Designate a year-round

contact or key-holder for: alarms, thefts, weather damage or animal problems.

• Close window curtains or blinds.

• Leave no valuables at the cottage (electronics, personal items, tools) unless you’re prepared to lose them. Lock up sporting goods that you decide must stay year-round (fishing rods & equipment, water skis, toys).

• Record the serial numbers of anything of value left behind. Marking your valuables with a drivers’ license # can help deter a thief or aid in property recovery.

• If you are leaving vehicles, make sure they’re winterized, secure and disabled – for snow machines remove track and hide keys; ensure boats are covered and locked; outboard motors locked and slightly disassembled; ATVs disabled – leave nothing on trailers unless it is locked or disabled.

• Remove all food, and anything that may attract animals. Pack up and take home all alcohol.

• Don’t leave firearms or weapons at the cottage.

Peaceful Conclusion To Weapons Call Charges Laid (TARBUTT TWP, ON) – On September 29, 2016 at 2:40 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint regarding a male with a weapon in the Smith Road area of Tarbutt Township.

Police attended the area and one male was taken into custody. As a result, Mathew SPRAGUE, 24 years of age from Tarbutt Township, Ontario was charged with: • Utter Threat, contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code, • Possess Weapon for

Dangerous Purpose, contrary to Section 88 of the Criminal Code, • Unauthorized Possession, contrary to Section 91(1) of the Criminal Code, and • Careless Use of a Firearm, contrary to Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Court on September 30, 2016 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Crime of the Week Mac’s Convenience Store Robbery Crime Stoppers and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in a robbery.

On the 22nd of September 2016 between 3 and 4 a.m. an unidentified female entered two Mac’s Convenience Stores located at 187 Gore Street and 12 Second Line West.

The suspect had a pocket knife in her hand and robbed the Gore Street store and later attempted to rob the Second Line store.

The suspect was described as being 5’2” to 5’5” average build wearing a dark hoodie with white pyjama bottoms.

The incident was caught on video surveillance and even though the female suspect covered her face she wore a distinct hoodie which had a logo of flames up the front that read “Mustang” with the Ford Company logo below it.

Pocket Or Purse?

It took a lot of years but I've finally figured out the difference between men and women.

It's not X versus Y chromosomes, or voluptuous bazooms versus hairy pecs.

Forget bigger biceps, smaller Adam's apples or the ability to pee standing up.

The difference between men and women is....

Pockets.

Men got 'em; women didn't.

Simple as that.

You never hear anthropologists or sociologists talk about it, but pockets represent an evolutionary cartwheel right up there with roller derby and unisex haircuts.

Odd fact: up until about 600 years ago, nobody had pockets. Right up until medieval times everybody – both men and women – carried their junk around in pieces of cloth which they secured with a drawstring and threw over their shoulders or tucked in their belts. Along about the time da Vinci was trying to get Mona Lisa's smile just right, some innovator got the bright idea of tucking his bag of valuables into his codpiece, which was a flap of cloth at the front of mens' trousers which covered the er, groinal area.

As unlikely – and uncomfortable -- as it sounds, the codpiece stash took off, fashion-wise. Everything a medieval man-about-town held dear – money, keys, rings, spectacles, snuff boxes – went into the codpiece for safekeeping, thus initiating a few centuries's worth of lame jokes about 'family jewels'.

Pockets began to appear in the late 1500's. The first ones were mere slits in a side seam of mens' trousers, but that didn't work too well, even with tight-fitting pantaloons, what with cash and other sundries cascading down the pantleg. Finally some genius came up with the idea of sewing a pouch right into the trousers. Bingo. The pocket was born.

But only for men. Womens' fashion didn't pick up on codpieces or their evolutionary manifestation, the pocket.

Ladies were condemned to lug around handbags instead.

Why? Vanity played a role.

Lack of pockets gave womens' garb a more 'streamlined' sillhouette which is admittedly, easier on the eye.

Whereas men don't mind looking like a walking bag of walnuts.

The trend continues.

Think of the Trump/Clinton 'debates' (I use the word loosely). Hillary looked svelte and cool in her pant suit, but if you looked closely – no pockets. Whereas I'm pretty sure Trump's suit jacket alone featured at least five pockets -- two outside, two inside and a vest pocket over the area where his heart should have been.

Down through the years there have been sporadic attempts to encourage men to carry their stuff in bags instead of pockets. Theoretically, it makes a lot of sense. Guys have got a lot to haul around these days – ball point pens, a pocket knife, money, ID, credit cards, medication, a Starbucks frequent flyer card -- not to mention tablets, the ubiquitous cell phone and the charger.

But somehow mankind has resisted and the man-purse (or 'murse') never really took off. Personally, I think men are too woolly-headed to manage a handbag. Women have been packing purses for a few centuries now but we'd be new to the game of handbag management and men tend to be absent-minded and easily distracted. We'd always be leaving the bag behind in taxis or bar rooms.

Me? I've got two manpurses, one leather, the other canvas. They both reside at the back of my closet.

Permanently. Turns out that when the chips are down and there's stuff to be toted, I'm a pocket, not a purse guy.

When you think of it, where would we be without the pocket? It gave us a great, if diminutive, hockey player – Henri Richard, AKA The Pocket Rocket.

Also pocket watches, pocket squares, pocket books – why, the humble pocket can even improve your love life.

If you don't believe me, ask Rodney Dangerfield. He's the guy who said, “If it wasn't for pickpockets I'd have no sex life at all.”

Legion News October is here and now we will really be getting ready for the Poppy Campaign at the end of this month.

Our Membership meeting will be on October 13th. We will see you all there to have your name put on the volunteer list for poppy distribution.

Last Saturday there was music and more music! It a fundraiser and benefit for Iris Place so they can continue to provide regular services for their clients.

The ladies darters had their competition last Wednesday.

On a nice summer evening this fellow decided to take a ride in his new Mercedes. He was really speeding when he noticed the lights of a police car behind him.

He figured the cop car could not catch him so he floored the gas. But so did the police officer. So he stopped and the police officer approached him and said, "Sir I have had a busy day and I do not need anymore paper work. So give me a excuse I have never heard before and I will buy that!!"

So the fellow said "Officer, last week my wife left me for a Police officer and I was afraid you were giving her back to me."

The officer said, "Have a nice evening and slow down!!"

A Thanksgiving Turkey Mystery

Farmer Oliver Cranberry was looking forward to Thanksgiving this October of 1886. It had been a bountiful year for his crops and livestock. The weather had co-operated wonderfully for him and the entire area around the small village of Thanksall, which at that time was about ten miles north of Kingston in Eastern Ontario. It has since disappeared as a village, and is now part of Kingston.

But back then it was a thriving village, with a post office, general store, granary, three churches, a one room school, a millinery for ladies hats and dresses, a blacksmith shop, a bank, and a municipal office for the police department, council chambers, the library and the fire department. On the outskirts was a barn where activities took place, such as livestock auctions, carnivals, horse racing, yard & bake sales, and the highlight of the year – the fall fair, held annually on the second Saturday of September. Behind the barn was a baseball field and a horseshoe pit.

Oliver had a banner competition at the fair this year. He had won first prize in the categories of corn, oats, and most importantly for him, the heaviest turkey in the poultry category. He also placed second in the chicken division, and third in the hog category. He had also entered the heifer division of the cattle category, but his cow, Cinnamon, came in dead last. It was a pretty good try for a first time farmer, he thought to himself, after taking over the farm from his parents, who had both passed away with pneumonia during the winter of 1885.

His vegetable garden at the farm for the family's consumption had produced bumper crops of various vegetables. His field of hay and wheat did well, giving him lots to keep Cinnamon and their two horses, Whip and Cream, fed over the winter. His McIntosh apple tree had also been loaded this year. The berries had all been plentiful too.

So his wife, Rosemary, had been busy pickling, canning, and making jams this summer and fall.

They had lots to be thankful for this year, he told her. She agreed, although she also had to admit that she was tired with the steady business of preparing food for the winter. But their cold cellar would be full for sure this year.

Quite a contrast from when they moved in this past January. It had been pretty sparse, so it was a welcome change this fall to have such an abundance. Oliver had tried to persuade her to enter her jams in the fall fair, but she refused, declaring they were not good enough to put in a competition, and only meant for their own use for over the winter. She did admit that she would consider it though for next year. He didn't push it. He knew it would be no use trying to persuade her otherwise.

He had mixed feelings about killing his prize winning turkey, Gobble-Gobble, for their Thanksgiving meal, but that had been the plan all along, keeping him fattened up, and gaining weight until he was nice and plump for cooking.

He decided to see Farmer Cornelius Pumpkinpie, who

raised turkeys for the entire area.

It was his mainstay. His turkeys were prized birds, and he had orders from far and wide.

He went over to his farm on Thursday afternoon to get some tips on how to kill 'G-G' quickly and humanely. Cornelius was in his barn, feeding his 'crop'.

When Oliver approached him, he quickly found out he was in a 'foul' mood. He quickly dispensed with the small talk, and got to the point of his visit. “Cornelius, I know you are busy with this Thanksgiving weekend coming up, but I need your help on how to kill and prepare our turkey for Sunday's dinner. Can you give me some suggestions?”

He snorted, and curtly said, “Oh you kids, why do you always wait til the last moment to come up with these idiotic questions?

You are as bad as the village folk who want to know what I feed them, how long it takes to get them ready for slaughter, and on and on. Honestly. For those village dwellers, I just tell them what they don't know won't hurt them.

Just cook it and eat it. Then they want to know the best stuffing to make, and should they put the dressing inside the bird, or prepare it separately. As if I care. I usually send them in to my wife for that. I just raise and sell the birds. Then there are you green farmers – this is your first year tackling a turkey, right?”

He paused momentarily to wait for Oliver's response. He looked down to the ground, shrugged his shoulders, and admitted that it was his first time. Then Cornelius went on. “You just put his head on the chopping block, and lop it off. Then pluck him and string him up to drain. You have done that already haven't you? You need to cure it for at least 72 hours. Oh, no, right. You just said you came to find out what to do, so I take it you haven't even killed it yet. Oh boy!” He shook his head in frustration and disgust at his cluelessness. Oliver was intimidated by this interrogation.

After a brief pause, he went on.

“Okay, here's what I'll do. Give me fifteen minutes, and I will have a bird ready for you. I still have a few that are ready to go. You in turn will bring me back your bird tomorrow morning. Is that okay with you?” Oliver immediately agreed to that. Then he asked the weight of the bird, so he could get a bird of equal weight to give him today. Oliver blushed as he didn't have a clue how heavy Gobble-Gobble weighed. He had never done that. At the fall fair he had been weighed by the judge at 23 pounds. He wasn't sure how much more weight he had gained since then. He hoped that he sounded like he knew when he told him 25 pounds.

Cornelius raised his eyebrows but said nothing. He simply turned away from Oliver and went looking for a bird to give him.

He came back shortly and handed it to him. He merely said, “There you are. Good luck with it. See you tomorrow with your bird. You can pay me then.”

Then he went back to feeding his other turkeys. Oliver called out, “Thank you. See you tomorrow”.

When he brought the turkey into the kitchen, where Rosemary was preparing supper, she was delighted to see that their turkey

was all ready to cook on Sunday.

She had not been looking forward to plucking it, gutting it, and all that gory stuff. She liked this better. She would just have to wash it, butter it up, stuff it, and pop it into the wood stove.

He added, “I have to take Gobble-Gobble over to Cornelius tomorrow morning in exchange.

He wasn't very happy with me, asking such dumb questions. I gather some other of us farmers and villagers were asking the same things, and he wasn't pleased that so many have waited to the last minute to get their turkeys.”

She commented to him, “Well, I am just glad we don't have to kill him ourselves. I have grown fond of him. I don't know if I would have had the heart to watch you butcher him. What about you?”

He said, “Yes, I must admit that I was a bit squeamish about having to do it too. I have become fond of him as well. Even though he has gotten quite aggressive, he has this character. I don't know...” She quickly added, “I know, me too. Maybe we could just keep him for a pet over the winter, and kill him off for next years' Easter dinner. Then we could get a new one next spring instead.” He frowned, and agreed that would be a good idea, except for the fact that he had already promised Cornelius to bring him over tomorrow. The conversation ended there, as supper was ready.

The Friday morning started out as a nice sunny warm October day, with some ground mist over the fields. Their rooster, Harvest, woke them up at the usual six a.m. Oliver got up and dressed, and headed out to the barn to feed the animals. Rosemary also got up and went to the kitchen to stoke the wood stove for the day, and began making breakfast.

He had only gone a few feet from the house when he sensed that something was wrong. It was too quiet. Normally GobbleGobble would be making a racket, and getting all the others upset and yakking away in their native tongue, ie., cow mooing, chicken clucking, horses neighing, etc.

He rushed over to the barn, and opened the doors, and headed towards the penned cage where Gobble-Gobble stayed at night.

He couldn't believe his eyes, but sure enough, the door to the cage was ajar, and his turkey was not inside. At first, Oliver thought that maybe he had undone the latch himself and got out. He began to search the barn, but soon it became obvious that he was not in there. So he headed outside and began searching the yard and field. He used his turkey caller that always brought him back, wherever he was. Even when he was in the field searching for grain, he had never gone further astray. He just seemed to know his boundaries, and like an imaginary fence, he stayed within those parameters. But today there was no sign of him anywhere.

Finally he headed back to the farmhouse to ask Rosemary if she knew where he was. She was at the stove, flipping pancakes when he came in. He told her about Gobble-Gobble being missing. She assured him that she didn't know his whereabouts. She wondered, “What are we going to do? You have to take him over to Cornelius's farm this morning.” He snapped back at her, “Yes, I know. You don't need to remind me. I don't know what I am going to tell him. Maybe we can barter some of our jams and relishes to make up the differ-

ence.” She retorted, “And leave ourselves short for the winter?

After all our hard work, I am not going to give it away. No, you'll have to find some other way.”

She paused as she put a batch of pancakes on the kitchen table.

“Here, start eating. Let's think about this while we eat.” Despite his anxiety about the situation, his stomach won out. They sat down and began talking and coming up with ideas as they ate.

They agreed that she would continue to search their property, with the possibility that he had just wandered off momentarily, and would return shortly. Oliver just had to put in another worry for her to mull over. “What if he heard or smelled a wild turkey in the woods, and broke out to pursue it?” She gasped, and uttered, “Oh, no, don't even suggest that.”

He agreed that he would go to the neighbours to ask them if they had seen him, or at least be on the lookout for him. After finishing breakfast, Rosemary just piled the dishes in the sink, and immediately headed out to call for him. Oliver headed out too over to the neighbours.

His neighbour to the west, Mace Pye, was a miserable man.

All he said was that if he saw him, he would make a great turkey dinner, and that he would not need to have his wife cook up theirs. Jack gritted his teeth to avoid saying anything derogatory, or smashing his fist into his face.

Then he went to his neighbours to the east. They were a couple, Barry and Ginger Peppers, with two small children, a 5-year old boy named Basil, and a 3-year old girl named Sage. When Basil heard that Gobble-Gobble was missing, he jumped up and down, and grinned mischievously. “I set him free. He gone now.” Oliver asked him where Gobble-Gobble was, but his parents intervened.

That was meant as a joke, but as soon as he said it, he realized he went too far. They had been trying to have a child for over a year, and had not been successful yet.

“Sorry, that was a mistake. I just got carried away. I am just worried sick about this. I sure hope he is okay, if only for a while, wherever he is.”

He hitched up the horses to the wagon, and reluctantly headed over to his farm. He got there about eleven, and there were other farmers already there to pick up their turkeys. Oliver hung around until there was no one else around.

He asked Oliver, “Did you not get my note? I stuck it on your front door very late last night. Your lights were all out, so I presumed you had gone to bed already. I had a customer come yesterday evening looking for a live bird. He wanted one to keep on his farm until Christmas.

Yours fit the description of what he wanted. He was from over Turnipville way. He was visiting his mother in town yesterday, and was heading out first thing this morning. He really wanted to take a bird with him. So I took the liberty of taking your bird last night. He didn't utter a sound as I transferred him from your cage to mine. I guess he was pretty sleepy. I'm glad he didn't, as I did not want to wake you. Obviously you didn't find the note this morning when you got up. I stuck it on the front door.

I'm sorry about this. All your worry for nothing. I certainly do appreciate your concern for my business, and making a fair deal. It is nice to know that we can do business with each other, with just a verbal agreement and a handshake. Here, take one of my new chicks. That will get you started on a new bird.”

Oliver protested weakly, but did accept the chick with delight.

“Thanks a lot. This is very kind of you. I was just sick about losing Gobble-Gobble, and not being able to fulfill our bargain.

Cornelius just waved his hands in front of him. “Nothing. We'll just call it square, what with the concern I caused you over Gobble-Gobble. Just do as good a job with Corny as you did with Gobble-Gobble, and you'll win at the fall fair again next year.” Then he shook his head and chuckled to himself. “Oh you young farmers. When will you ever learn to not get attached to your livestock. They are a food source – that's all. Well, good luck with your new addition. Thanks for your honesty too. In fact, why don't you come over for supper on Monday for leftovers. I would invite you to come on Sunday, but you have your own turkey dinner to prepare, as do we. I have my family coming in for the day. It's our turn to make the meal. We alternate every year. It really is an appropriate time of the year to give thanks. Those Pilgrims all those years ago got it right, didn't they.”

Oliver said to him, “They sure did. Well, anyway, that would be great. Monday it is. Thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving.” He headed out, with his new chick in hand. So what started out as a bad day turned out to be a great one, and the Thanksgiving weekend turned into a wonderful time. The mystery of their missing turkey became a topic of conversation every Thanksgiving after that. Oliver and Rosemary were eventually able to tell their children and even further down the road, us grandchildren about how a turkey named GobbleGobble became a turning point in their lives. ... Life Changes

Our fall season is now descending upon us. I love these seasonal changes. On my early morning walk I watched a large leaf float to the ground.

That leaf had just released its hold on Life. No struggles, no big to-do about nothing. And many other leaves on this early morning were also releasing their hold on Life and fluttering to the walkway and creating a delightful shuffle under foot. It reminded me of my Life and the current changes happening to me. Now I know Life is always changing. How I felt five minutes ago has changed.

Life simply moves on, that is

how it is supposed to be.

It was about four years ago, I experienced a tremendous yearning for ‘something’, but I didn’t know what. After much soul searching I knew I desperately wanted to be closer to my family. I’d lost a dear friend, others were moving away, and I no longer felt a need to contribute to my beloved community. I had begun the painful transitional approach to leaving Wawa. Any great change – planned or unplanned requires a need to reexamine change in Life dynamics. In this case it has been a monumental change affecting every aspect of my Life – i) family dynamics changed; ii) my friendships,

an intense Pros and Cons list of five different communities, I submitted an application to the Central Elgin Municipality for a unit in the Kettle Creek Villa in Port Stanley. That was fifteen months ago, and there has been no movement whatsoever within that facility. And so, while in London for medical consultations, I was subjected to two days of intense apartment searching (smile, please!). And we were to find a wonderful one bedroom newly renovated unit in the Oxford Park Towers complex, near Cherry Hill Mall and a large senior development. I am very comfortable with that decision and am so excited about beginning the next phase of my Life. Will keep you posted.

In the meantime, it is a further purging of years and years of accumulation of ‘stuff’. I have been doing so for the past year, and now it’s down to seri-

ous business. The fascinating aspect of this is the incredible memories that surface. I give thanks for those memories and tuck them away within my ‘golden’ psyche.

In closing and the wonderful colorful leaf releasing its hold on Life and fluttering to the ground. The Leaf knows it will reappear in the next phase of its Life. So it is with me releasing my hold on the first 79 years of my Life.

There have been numerous other monumental changes over the years, changes where I would be led kicking and screaming into a new reality.

I’ve matured, thankfully, dear God, Father of everything. I’m so much more accepting of what is, and try not to concern myself with what will be, knowing that with the Grace of God, the Best is yet to be. I AM so very grateful! ‘til next time…this is Joan

Nine Years And Counting! much notice.

Then things became a little more problematic as we announced our 74th or 82nd anniversaries. People would flash us the most peculiar looks until we explained our reckoning in months. I suggested a couple of times that we leave off accounting the time of our marriage in months after we passed fifty but Debra was having fun with it all and refused to count our time together in years. “After all”, she told me, “Everybody else counts it that way”.

And so, we are celebrating our 108th monthaversary this week, in years that’s nine.

It’s not that there’s a huge difference in our ages. Not like an eighty year old marrying a teenager or anything that extreme. But seventeen plus years is enough of a difference to remark the kind of age difference that could be a possible problem as I inevitably move into old age a little

sooner than she does.

I teased Debra a little when we first wed that about the best life expectancy for myself that I could promise would be about fifteen years. The fun part of all that is that I now get to tease her each year as our anniversaries come up, “Look at that. Just six more years until your sentence is up!”

Anyway, asking Debra to marry me was one of the best decisions I ever made. And one of the most surprising too. She said yes! I can hardly wait to see what happens when we get to our 180th monthaversary.

In Sault Ste. Marie there will be a Build A Bear workshop at the Station Mall.

We will have a circus with seals, horses, elephants, aerobatics, magic tricks, zonkeys (zebra and donkey), hippos, bears, and kangaroos. The circus will come to Wawa April 26th, 2017.

Yesterday was our wedding anniversary. Debra’s and mine I mean. It’s been nine years since our big day though I have to admit that it’s not always easy to keep track of them, not just because of the possibility that my brain no longer has the razor sharp edge it once had, but because we noted the difference in our ages when we undertook the adventure.

Hence, we decided to count our early anniversaries in months so they would pile up a little more quickly. You know … a couple our age at the time might draw a few odd glances when the time came to announce our second or third anniversary. So we decided to count them in months. I suppose we really should have called them “monthaversaries” or something like that, but we didn’t, and the anniversaries piled up comfortably as we drifted through our 12th, 16th, 23rd, etc. without anyone taking

Article by Irene Armstrong October 2016 - Through generous gifts and the efforts of our supporters and volunteers, the Lady Dunn Health Centre (LDHC) Foundation was able to provide $66,721.00 last fiscal for a Telemetry Unit at Lady Dunn Health Centre.

The equipment will benefit patients admitted with heart attacks, angina, arrhythmias and other cardiac-related conditions.

Since 2009 the LDHC Foundation has disbursed more than $250,000 to help the hospital purchase the following medical equipment; Telemetry Unit ($66, 721.00) equipped with two wireless monitoring devices; Hematology Analyzer ($60,000) specialized laboratory equipment; Blood Pressure Monitor ($6,000) to compliment the Cardiac Rehabilitation Service; Bathing System consisting of Tub ($27,000) and Chair ($12,000) housed at the Long Term Care Unit; Emergency room purchases include a Cardiac Defibrillator ($23,000), a Transport Ventilator ($21,630) and a Glidescope ($21,700) to treat both adult and pediatric patients; Vascular Probe ($10,170) to compliment the

portable ultrasound; and a replacement Medication Cart ($4,700) for Long Term Care.

With your generous support the new equipment is available to the medical staff to take care of your family and friends right here at home.

The priority for this year’s fundraising is to equip LDHC with a Digitizer Radiography valued at $154,000. The upgrade will replace the aging radiography system allowing the hospital to continue to provide excellent care in radiography with advanced technology.

Going forward and to build on the last 7 years of success the LDHC Foundation will soon reintroduce a new look with updated donor boards and a fresh new logo. As a result of this planning, the LDHC Foundation has postponed the annual Donor Recognition “Come and Go Social” until further notice.
