Adam's Most Canadian Experience Article by Karin Grundt Adam came from Germany last fall as an exchange student for six months. He was billeted in the Barrie area and through school befriended my grandsons Kevan and Darek. They seemed to have the same interests, mainly outdoor activities, and anything motorized. A ski hill was in close proximity and after school and on weekends they love snowboarding, skiing, and when the bay near their home was frozen, skidooing as his favoured activity. The first time he operated a skidoo on clear ice, he was nervous, and thought it was scary, seeing the plants and rocks underneath.

Adam found school in Canada easy - being more advanced in Germany, but in those winter months he became an avid outdoors lover. When he left in March, he had never experienced what Canadian summers had to offer. Texting back and forth with my grandsons, and finally the loaded question, "Can I come back in the summer, if our parents allow it?". A resounding 'yes' was the answer from both sides, and Adam prepared to come back. He packed everything into that short time, a boy of

16 could possibly wish for.

There were open air concerts, four-wheeling, dirt biking in a gravel pit, and then there would be a few days up north in Omi's Camp, which is a yearly highlight for my grandsons, and they wanted to share it with Adam.

He was not impressed with the nine hour long trip up here, which he endured mostly by sleeping -- but once he dipped his toes into the lake with endless swimming, saunaing, waterskiing and seadooing, he was thrilled. The boys canoed to a beaver dam, so solid they could walk on it. The beaver had incorporated a white plastic pail into his dam's construction -- how ingenious! The loons displayed their song and dance right in front of the dock , and while they were trying to catch fish, wolves could be heard howling in the distance.

During a hike to an abandoned mine, they startled two sandhill cranes, who took flight with their enormous wings. Adam thought it was awesome to see these big birds so close. Unfortunately or (fortunately) they didn't see a bear or moose closeup, only their droppings -- but I served a moose roast that a friend had given me. It was rated

'very good' by Adam.

Sleeping in bunk beds, using an outhouse, and no electricity was another experience for a city boy, and it all added up to an adventure most boys only dream about.

Good byes are always sad when the boys leave -and so was this one with Adam.

Legion News It is September and we are back at it like they say and our first membership meeting is Thursday, September 14th at 7:00 p.m. so we see you ALL there so we can plan all the events and fundraisers to keep our doors open and serve our veterans and the community.

September is a major month to remember the battles our veterans who were involved with the 1944 battles like the Operation Market Garden and the battle of Arnhem. Our Engineers had to help the British para’s to get back over the Rhine after the fiasco of One bridge to far.

The Battle for the Schelde were they had to fight in the Flooded polders to their waist in the water. The our forgotten Regiment had to move from Italy to Nijmegen to spend the winter there at the Waal bridge at the front line to get ready for the spring 1945 Operations to liberate the rest of Holland.

Our ladies Auxiliary is starting with their Luncheon on September 28th from 11:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. Being served is BBQ chicken or roast beef on a bun, served with turkey vegetable soup or bean salad with Coffee or Tea for only $10.00.

Our new membership cards are at the office so be early bird and get your new card for 2018 NOW. At the entry exam for medical school, there were about 60 aspirant doctors. So the professor said there was only 1 question which would be important for their future.

He wrote on the blackboard the following: PSEIN and said, “Change those letters into a part of the body which is very important when erect and write this down.”

So then he said, “Those who wrote down SPINE will be doctors and the rest will be on FACEBOOK.” To all our Comrades sick at home, in the hospital or nursing homes you are in our thoughts and prayers and we wish you well.

Wawa Baptist Church To Hold Church Services In Wawa Many of you have seen or heard that the Wawa Baptist Church building is up for sale out in the Mission. There has been lots of speculation as to what is happening to the Wawa Baptist Church and its congregation.

At long last, it is confirmed that Wawa Baptist Church will move temporarily into Wawa to the Seniors’ Drop-in Centre, a.k.a. the,” at “Wawa Goose Seniors’ Club 63 Broadway Avenue, Wawa.

Although the move of the church into Wawa has been years in the making, Wawa Baptist will start holding services in town as they await the anticipated sale of the church building.

The Wawa Baptist Church congregation and leadership are very excited to announce their Grand Opening to be held Sunday, September 24, 2017. The Wawa Baptist Church invites residents of Wawa and surrounding area

to come and celebrate with them the move to temporary quarters in the Wawa Seniors’ Drop-in Centre on Sunday, September 24.

Each Sunday, prayer time begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by a church service at 10:00 a.m. that includes worship songs, and preaching of a Scripture-based sermon. A nursery plus Sunday school for children between the ages of 5 and 12 is available.

Beverages and desserts will be provided after the service on Sunday, September 24.

To celebrate Wawa Baptist Church’s Grand Opening of their new, in-town location.

Dress is casual, and all are welcome to attend on Sunday mornings for prayer time at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday service at 10:00 a.m.

News From The Park

In preparation to return to Queen’s Park on Monday, Andrea Horwath and all the members of the NDP caucus met for several days to identify and discuss the issues and events that arose over the summer. Some of the issues we all are aware of through news media. However, even more important were the discussions that we had about what each of my colleagues and I learned knocking on doors, during our travels and attending events over the course of the summer.

Once again I was reminded just how large the riding of Algoma-Manitoulin is. It took the whole summer, but I was able to spend some time in all quadrants of the riding during the recess. Whether I met people at a music concert, festival, pow wow, grand opening, or even at one of the public meetings I held, I heard loud and clear what the people of this region face day in and day out.

Andrea Horwath shared with us that she undertook extensive travels to all parts of the province. She held public meetings, arranged personal home visits and attended a host of special events. While on the road, she met with families who are struggling with flat wages, increasing costs and unmanageable hydro bills. She visited communities that have been hardhit by local school closures and hospital cuts. She shared with us many of the heart breaking personal stories she heard about the state of seniors care in this province.

In Thunder Bay, for example, Andrea learned that there are over 800 people on such a waiting list. Locally, in Sault Ste. Marie – Algoma alone, I read a report that there are 706 people on such a waiting list.

Andrea heard from frustrated adult children of seniors who cannot find appropriate longterm care for their parents and the added stress this puts on both the seniors and their own families; all of which results in deteriorating health for the seniors out of despair and guilt.

New Democrats have been calling for a broad-based public inquiry that looks into the systemic problems in long-term care in Ontario.

Families deserve to know how underfunding, understaffing, and the lack of any minimum standards of care are impacting quality of care. All of us at the meeting agreed that nobody’s parent or grandparent should be left alone in bed for 18 hours at a time. No senior should go without breakfast or the help they need to get to the bathroom on time. Deep cuts by the Liberals and the previous Conservative government have only made the crisis worse.

Andrea told us how she listened to families who have suffered agonizingly long nights in ER hallways with their loved ones because hospitals are not getting the funding they need to keep beds open and to have adequate front line health care workers. In her 2017 budget, Kathleen Wynne underfunded hospitals by at least $300 million, exacerbating the problem of overcrowded hospitals where patients are coming to think of long waits and hallway medicine as part of the norm.

Kathleen Wynne has disappointed Ontarians with her cuts to schools and hospitals and her sell-off of Hydro One. As for Patrick Brown - he won't even tell Ontarians what his plans are, but after years of standing with Conservatives who cut the way that Stephen Harper, Mike Harris and Tim Hudak did, we can expect his priorities to be conservative cuts and conservative privatization. With Brown offering only more cuts, only New Democrats have a plan to improve public services and put people at the heart of government.

In recent months New Democrats have released plans to create a drug program that covers everyone, a plan to return Hydro One to public hands so Ontario has more control over costs again, and a plan to make workinglife better for people, including more stability, more vacation days and paid sick days.

New Democrats believe that government can be about delivering for families. It can deliver the services that make life better for people.

Life doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time to make Ontario ‘work’ again.

Selling Public Assets Has No Long Term Benefit The more time Canadians have to unpack the Liberal commitment to invest in public infrastructure, the more it becomes obvious the plan is largely about turning tax dollars and public assets over to the private sector. This forprofit investment model was never fleshed out during the election, most likely because it never would have received much in the way of public support. With the creation of an infrastructure bank to dole out tax dollars to private investors, the plan to support profitable projects was laid bare and now Canadians are learning that the government intends to sell off public assets.

In some ways this is old news, but there`s a new wrinkle that has gone under-reported over the summer. Many will recall the discussion about the sale of public assets was a feature of this year’s budget debate.

We learned that the government hired the consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers to advise them on how the privatization of Canadian owned airports might proceed. This summer a government website (Buyandsell.gc.ca.) revealed that the Liberals are studying the sale of up to $8.3 billion worth of Parks Canada infrastructure. The divestment proposal includes roads, bridges, and dams that are critical to our national parks.

If sold, this important infrastructure will generate cash for private investors at the expense of future generations and potentially limit access to our public parks.

Canadians love our National Parks and the government knows that. They were an important component of the mandate letter given to the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change. That document focused on how the network of parks needs to be protected and better serve Canadians of all backgrounds.

In addition to that, the government made park access free for this year as a part of our Canada150 celebrations. But at the same time

as record numbers of people were visiting our parks, the government was studying the sale of critical infrastructure that will decrease access to park land and increase costs to Canadians going forward.

Neither of those outcomes matches the intent of the mandate letter the Prime Minister wrote to the Minister.

New Democrats are concerned that the promise to preserve and protect our National Parks has been abandoned. Instead of listening to those familiar with these pristine spaces who are calling for better upkeep of park infrastructure, the government is taking Parks Canada down a road which is both reckless and irresponsible. In addition to that, we are concerned about the government reaching out to private industry before any consultations with Canadians have occurred and that there is no indication that public consultations will be part of the process at all.

Without consultations, the sale of Parks Canada assets could take on the appearance of the government doing favours for their friends. There are multiple stakeholders who should be at the table before we enter into any negotiations that could bring about significant changes to our National Parks. Community stakeholders, environmentalists, local First Nations, and Canadians who use the parks must be consulted in a meaningful way so that the government understands the full impact that could occur from privatizing these assets. There is more at stake than a one-time influx of cash and Canadians deserve to have their concerns heard before it is too late to address them.

5 Tips For Return To School Success For Parents

By Dr. Henry J. Svec As your children gets ready to return to school, Elementary or High School age, likely things are ready to go. School supplies, special clothes or gym equipment are ready for that first day. But what can you do as a parent to make this year a roaring success? Here is my list of 5 must do's for you when it comes to teachers or schools: 1. Visit with the classroom teacher as soon as possible.

Just 5 minutes to introduce yourself and indicate how you support what he/she is doing and want to know how you can help at home. Share your email and contact information. Don't wait for parentteacher night, do this as soon as you can. Even before school starts is best.

2. Find out the expectations for homework. Is it new work or things not completed during the day?

Homework should be work that is a review for the next day or projects that are in the future. With 6-8 hours of school time, there is no excuse for needing more time at home to finish things. If this starts to happen, get to the school and find out why work isn't getting done there.

Young children should have 30 minutes homework, older children 45-60 minutes per night. You are getting them ready for high school and college or university. Work is good.

3. Ask for an "enrichment

file" for your child, especially in elementary school.

Children need to work on what they are interested in and excited about. The file is simply that, with a task or goal set for a project to be completed at a specified time. If your child is in grade 4 and interested in fish this week, the weekly enrichment file may have instructions on doing a one page report on fish that live in a local river.

Use of internet research or a call to the local conservation authority may be the method to collect that information. The product could be an actual report of one page, a verbal presentation to the class or short video.

On Monday after completion, the enrichment file has a new task. Whenever your child is finished their work or are bored, they are allowed to work on their project. A great tool to help your child love school.

4. Find out the level of exercise per day for your child. Children need at least 20 minutes of cardio exercise twice a day to increase focus, concentration and performance. If you can do 20 minutes before school that is an amazing tool we often recommend for ADHD. One session in the early afternoon is

also needed for all children, not just those diagnosed with ADHD. If ok, and if you have one, allow your child to wear a wrist HR monitor for a couple of days to ensure they are getting enough exercise.

Cardio bursts are best if your child is cleared to them.

5. Don't ever let your child know if you are going to the school to advocate on their behalf. If you have to do this, also tell the school that your child should not know that you were advocating. Often with a child diagnosed with a disability you will need to advocate and that is part of your job. Teaching your child to self-advocate is the key, but you don't want them to think you will always fight their battles or that they can get away with certain behaviours because you will always help them out. Advocating with a disability or against injustice is something they will need to learn.

Updated Curriculum, New Report Cards Coming To Ontario Schools

Province Modernizing School System to Unleash Full Potential of Every Student Article from the Office of the Premier Our schools are at the foundation of a fair and competitive Ontario. Today, our province's publicly funded education system ranks among the best in the world, preparing our students for academic and future success. To build on this progress and make our schools even better at unleashing every student's full potential, Ontario is taking immediate steps to give students and parents better information about a child's progress and launching an ambitious multi-year initiative to modernize curriculums and assessment tools from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Premier Kathleen Wynne and Mitzie Hunter, Minister of Education, were at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute to announce the opening of public consultations for this new initiative and detail the new report cards, which will be introduced in schools for the 2018-19 academic year.

Ontario's updated school curriculum will be developed through the public consultations with the goal of improving student achievement in core skills such as math and increasing emphasis on transferable life skills that can help students of all ages meet the changing demands of today and tomorrow. Communication, problemsolving, critical thinking, creativity and global citizenship are skills that will help Ontario students thrive as they grow up in a changing, interconnected world. Beginning next school year, new report cards will better track a young person's development of these essential and transferable life skills.

The Fall Fair Mystery Yesterday, Saturday, September 17, 2016 was the annual Fall Fair here in the village of Cornish. It is sponsored by the Agricultural Society again this year. Many of the locals have always planted a vegetable garden in their back yards. They enjoy the gardening experience, nurturing it to produce its' rewards, and finally reaping their harvest each fall. I know they eagerly look forward to competing against each other at the fair. There is always lots of competition in all the categories, which includes largest, oddest shaped, and most perfect looking vegetables, the best pesticide-free herb garden, floral & vegetable arrangements, jams, pickles & relishes, and pastries & pies.

Over the last 15 years, the competition in the largest vegetable category, which is what I am most interested in, has always come down to two gardeners. Basil Carraway moved to Cornish, 16 years ago. His first entry in the fair did not garnish him any awards, but he did get compliments on a good effort. A few other entrants offered him some advice, based on their experience of the soil type in this area, watering techniques, etc. He eagerly took their advice, and the next year he got third place in part due to his zucchinis, as well as with his pickled beets. His floral bouquet of fall flowers complimented his table display very well. Then ten years ago, he won first place for his vegetables. Every year since he has either been first or second.

His main rival has been Lewis Appleton, a spry eighty year old man, as is Basil. He was one of the first gardeners to offer advice to him when he first entered the contest back those 15 years ago. Prior to that Lewis was the recognized as 'king of the fall fair', who had no competition to seriously challenge his entries.

He certainly had a 'green thumb', as all his vegetables were enormous, and blemish free. He also had the artistic touch to place his display in an appealing configuration that helped him keep winning over the years.

His wife, Rosemary, was the champion all the time when it came to the pies, and jams and pickles categories. Her forte was in the taste part of the competition, whereas her husband was in the visual part.

The judges always had a challenge on their hands when it came time to determine the winners.

This year it was going to be no exception, everyone expected.

---- It was Friday evening when the tables were being set up, and the contestants had two hours between seven and nine to get their display ready. The public was also allowed in to watch them set up, and ask questions on the display or just general gardening. The judging always took place around ten on Saturday morning. Then on Saturday

afternoon the produce and food were auctioned off to the highest bidders. All the money raised from that went towards scholarships for students who wanted to pursue their education in the fields of either agriculture or environmental studies.

Everyone who came to the fair on the Friday night could see that it was going to be a battle between Basil and Lewis again this year – that is until a stranger pulled up in his beatup old half-ton truck. As he unloaded his vegetables, folks noticed that the squash was pretty big, and appeared to have no blemishes either. His other vegetables looked pretty good too, they commented.

There were 10 entrants altogether this year. The tables were all lined up in a row along one wall of the hockey rink part of the arena. That was where all the activities take place. Other displays included the petting zoo, the arts & crafts sale, the fish pond, the booths where the local organizations were displaying information, or selling tickets to raise money for their sports activities, etc., the food court, and the kids activity centre. Outside were the carnival games and rides, the car show, and a baseball tournament.

Basil had table #1, Lewis had #2. Us others had 3 to 9, and 10 was this stranger. Each table had to show their name, their address, with a list of their vegetables, and a brief summary of their growing techniques.

The stranger's name was Mario Broccollio. It said he lived in the downtown core in an apartment over the restaurant called 'Thyme To Eat Bistro'.

After everyone had their own display set up, we always liked to check out the competition. Lewis asked Mario where his garden was set up, as he didn't think there would be a place there at the restaurant.

He explained that he had a plot over at the Community Garden beside the Seniors' Retirement complex at the east end of town.

Lewis smiled, as he saw a way to knock out one competitor anyway. “Oh, I am sorry, but your garden has to be at your place of residence. You will have to take down your display, I'm afraid, Mr. Broccollio.”

He objected of course. “Oh, I don't know of any rule that says that to be the case. Nobody mentioned it when I signed up, anyway. No, I will leave it up here, thanks just the same.” We saw that Lewis was getting angry now. “We'll see about that. I will get the judges over here and find out for sure.” He turned away in a huff, and went looking for the head judge. That just happened to be his wife's brother, Gord McBean. He was helping get the food tables set up for the judging of the jams, pickles and pies, at the other end of the arena.

He tapped him on the shoulder and said, “Gord, we got a problem with one of our entries over here. Come with me.” He grabbed him by the arm and

dragged him back to his section.

He explained the situation, and demanded that Mario be disqualified.

Gord looked flustered.

“Lewis, there is no rule about that at all. Maybe we should stipulate that for next year, but for this year, Mr. Broccollio is fine to enter. Good luck, sir.” He turned and quickly headed back to his other work before Lewis could say anything.

But we all heard the threat -- “We'll see about this!”, Lewis yelled at the departing McBean.

Basil and us other contestants who were setting up, watched in dismay at this outburst of poor sportsmanship. We recognized it for what it really was – a man determined to win at all costs.

I for one expected that meant that he would be bribing the judges to pick his display. I for one suspected that could be why he won so many times over the years, although I had no proof of that.

We had encountered this behavior with Lewis in other years, but never to this extreme.

This was not how it was supposed to be. But Mario didn't say anything to Lewis. He just turned his back to him and continued on finishing up his display, and headed out of the arena. That was about nine o'clock. The rest of us left about the same time.

Lewis pretended to be still setting up his display, all the while casting a sideways glance at Mario's table. After he was sure no one was looking, Lewis nonchalantly moved over to his table. He pretended to accidentally bump into the table. Some of the rounder vegetables rolled onto the ground, as well as the squash. He picked them up, and made a fuss of re-arranging them. He commented out loud, even though there was no one around to see what he did, “How clumsy of me.” After he was done, it looked really sloppy, and not nearly as decoratively displayed as when Mario had left it.

His prize squash had a gouge on the side that was quite noticeable. He then moved away and left the arena.

However, there was one person who had witnessed this disgraceful act from afar. This person was not happy at what had happened there, but smiled as a plan developed to teach Lewis a lesson. This person was also the one responsible for locking up the arena for the night, to ensure that the displays would be safe while the carnival took place outside, and for overnight too.

And I suppose you are thinking that it would be one of the staff of the arena that was responsible for this job on this particular night. Or maybe even McBean, the head judge of the event. Normally that would be a good guess too. But tonight, it just happened to be someone who had been delegated the job from another person of the Society who couldn't make it to the arena that night.

On Saturday morning about eight Basil was the first of us ten contestants to come in to check his display one more time before the judging began. He came over to his table, and looked it over. He was satisfied with his display. He looked around at the others, and was surprised to see that Lewis's display was gone entirely. All that was left

was his name and #2 sign. He thought that was odd. Then Mario came in and went to his display. He was stunned at how it had changed. Obviously someone had re-arranged it, and made it a lot more appealing and organized than he had left it on Friday night. He went down to ask Basil if he knew who had touched his entry. He said that he had just got here himself, and hadn't seen anyone. They moved along back to Mario's table, and were admiring it when Lewis came strolling in. He had a smirk on his face as he passed the other two. But when he got near his table, he stopped dead in his tracks. He couldn't believe his eyes. His display was gone!

He uttered, “What the....”. He moved right over to the table to try and comprehend what he was – or not – seeing. Then he turned to Basil and Mario and stormed over to confront them.

“All right you little weasels.

Which one of you did it? What did you do with my exhibit?

Where is it? Put it back immediately or I will report you to the judges.” His fists were clenched, and he was turning red in the face. Basil backed right away and scurried out of the arena, hoping to find someone to come back with him and break up this confrontation that he knew was going to happen. That left Mario and Lewis alone.

Lewis threw the first punch. It hit Mario's left cheek. He was a much younger man, and stronger than Lewis. It just bounced off him. He tried to push Lewis away. That only riled him even more, and he charged him again. This time Mario shuffled sideways, and Lewis missed him altogether. Instead he fell right into Mario's table and knocked it over. Lewis got up, recovered his balance, and lunged at him again. This time Mario tried to subdue Lewis, and they struggled. Finally Mario had had enough. He got Lewis pinned to the ground, and he hit him in the temple, in order to stun him, and stop him from struggling. It worked.

Unfortunately for Mario, that was when a cop and Basil arrived. They pulled him off Lewis. The cop told him that he was going to have to charge him with aggravated assault and battery, for one thing. He was taken away to jail. Lewis was taken to the hospital for observation.

There was utter confusion in the arena. The entire judging ended up being canceled. The perpetrator of this mess was distraught. What started out to be just a plan to teach him a lesson turned into this unintentional turn of events. How quickly our actions can have unexpected consequences, isn't it!

Now that that part of the arena had been cleaned up, and everyone had taken their vegetables and other goodies out, it was roped off. That left the food court and the rest of the booths the only part still open. There were not too many that came in though. Nobody wanted to see the empty part of the arena, knowing what had happened there. But they did have the auction of the food and produce, even though no prize winners were designated. They set up a table outside by the front entrance of the arena, and held it there. It did put a real damper

on the rest of the day for the outdoor carnival events. They did go ahead with the planned outdoor concert and fireworks that night. By then the shock of the morning's events had faded, but not the gossip and chatter. -----Rosemary went to the hospital to visit her husband. The doctor on call told her that he was being admitted for observation, but would be discharged on Sunday.

He told her to go in and see him.

When she came into the room, she was shocked to see his battered and bruised face. He had one black eye that looked really ugly, she thought.

She approached the bed, and asked him how he was feeling.

He replied that he was pretty sore, but otherwise fine. He went on. “I would have cleaned his clock, only he hit me first. I'm going to lay charges of course, once I get out of here.”

“No, you are not! He has already been charged and is in jail right now, thanks to you.

And you are going to demand that those charges be dropped!”

She stated it emphatically. She was surprised at her boldness.

Normally she was the meek and mild wife who said little, and went along with her husband's wishes.

“But he stole my display with all my prized vegetables, and he reset his own display up this morning before anyone else got there. That's against the rules, too, you know. It was not that nice last night when I left. I took care of that.” He stopped short, when he realized what he had just admitted to.

But he was even more startled when Rosemary said, “I know. I saw what you did. I was heading to the side door to lock up. You didn't see me, but I sure saw you!

Tampering with his lovely display, just so you could knock him out of the running for the judging today is against the rules too Shame on you. So I decided to teach you a lesson. I took your stuff home with me last night.

It was easy for me to remove it after you and everyone else had gone. But don't worry. They are in a garbage bag back home in our basement. I never expected you to react this way, and this certainly was not the outcome that I had planned for, in the least. I'm sorry.” She stopped, and sighed. She looked at him.

She wasn't sure what she saw in his face, for the first time since they had been married 41 years ago. She suspected that he must be stunned at her audacity, and standing up to him. It sure shut him up from saying anything.

That was a first, she mused. So they sat there together in silence for a long time....

So, did anybody expect that it was Rosemary who unleashed this chain of events? I must admit that I was sure Mario really had done it, as did most folks in town. How quickly we are to judge, aren't we... Tom Ato, entrant #8.. (I just pray next year's fall fair won't be as contentious. I also hope Mario will not let this dreadful incident stop him from participating next year.

His displays this year would sure have given Basil and Lewis a run for their money. Hopefully everybody has learned a lesson.)

Youth & Elders Gathering – CARL EDWARD DAY October 2, 1943 – September 8, 2017 Mr. Carl Edward Day, age 73 years, a resident of Manitouwadge, Ontario passed away peacefully in St. Joseph's Hospice on Friday, September 8, 2017 with his family by his side.

Carl was born in Galt (Cambridge), Ontario on October 2, 1943. He owned and operated a motel in Wawa for over 20 years. Carl enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing.

He was a master of everything, particularly wood carving and keeping up to date with the latest gadgets and technology. He also enjoyed travelling, with Carl and Lois spending many winters in Victoria, British Columbia.

Carl was a true family man and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren was his greatest passion.

Carl is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois (nee MacDonald); daughter Katherine (Curtis) of Thunder Bay and grandchildren Justin and Meagan; daughter Susan (Brian) of Victoria, British Columbia and grandchildren Dakota and Jessie; daughter Connie (Richard) of Wawa, Ontario and grandchildren Darian and Paige as well as two sisters, Sandra (Frank) Hall of Cambridge, Ontario and Bev (Tom) Hogg of Manitouwadge, Ontario. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Edith Day. A private family service will be held in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, Thunder Bay. Interment will take place in Cambridge, Ontario at a later date. Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Carl to the M.S. Society would be greatly appreciated.

The Gathering was held August 9th to the 11th this year and was a huge success, with very minor glitches along the way. Overall registrations were in excess of 300 people attending, more than half being members and their families and extended families, another third from other First Nations, with the balance of attendees from local and regional areas; and most participated on an average of 3 days per person. Traditional teachings, healings and ceremonies as well as games, activities and entertainment were conducted throughout the week. We commend all who were involved and participated for their hard work, cooperation and for bringing a sense of community and harmony.

We hope you enjoyed your stay with us as much as we enjoyed your presence. I would like to thank everyone who helped out in making this Gathering a very successful one.

Forest Fires

When water bombers and helicopters full of young fire rangers are a common sight in our Northern Algoma skies, we know that another forest fire season is upon us.

Lightning related forest fires have always been Mother Nature’s way of spring cleaning and making room for new growth and the regeneration of Algoma’s vast forests. It wasn’t until humans entered the scene that lightning was replaced by this new two-legged fire-starter.

Early residents of the east shore of Lake Superior anticipated the benefits of fire habits for the bountiful blueberry patches and renewed grazing areas for edible game. Native families sometimes used fire as a method of clearing the land to encourage future food harvesting. It is recorded that one such burn got out of control and swept much of Northern Ontario in the mid-1800’s from Temiskaming near the Quebec border to the banks of the Michipicoten River.

Early explorers to Lake Superior noted the vast stretches of barren rock and coastline from numerous fires over the years. Voyageurs apparently had a terrible habit of not completely dousing their evening campfires before launching their canoes at 4 a.m. for another long day of paddling to the next trading post. A stiff onshore wind at mid-day easily carried embers into the surrounding driftwood and ignited the coastal forests. During Sir Sanford Fleming’s 1877 expedition through Northern Algoma to map out a potential route for the Canadian Pacific Railway along the Superior shoreline, he noted that the timber resources were “mostly burnt” and “a great deal of the country has been burnt over.”

As mining and logging camps began to set down roots in the remote forests of the region, forest fires were dreaded and precautions were necessary. For increased protection, a tree-less border was often cut around each community or building to provide a fuel-free barrier for any encroaching flames and searing winds. In her memoirs of life at the Magpie Mine near Wawa and Dubreuilville, Florence Clark remembers her close call with a fire during the

summer of 1914. “July had been very dry, the bush was tinder.

Perhaps it was lightening that started the blaze, perhaps a camp-fire not extinguished, or the heel of a pipe…We heard of fire to the west at noon, but could see nothing. Then the breeze increased, and the heated air swept forward, and the little devil became a towering demon. In 1921, the Helen Mine was not so lucky when a hungry forest fire swept across the grassy plains of the Magpie River Valley. The few residents of Wawa City fought back the licking flames but could not save the Catholic Church or outlying log cabins. Early resident Alex Ross recalled in a Sault Star article from July 4, 1935 that the fire destroyed every building for the 400+ employees at the abandoned Helen Mine.

From three miles away, the top of the Helen Mountain resembled a fiery volcano, spouting smoke and flames high into the skies. Vast 100 year old jack pine stands around Wawa are a remnant of this legendary fire.

Although forest fire suppression has come a long way over the past 100 years, many Wawa residents and regular visitors recall the fire of 1946, the Hawk Fire of 1963 and the Dubreuilville Fire in 1995. While the flames threatened cottages and communities, Fire Rangers walked into local restaurants and hotels and approached patrons to lend their muscles and brawn to help the evacuees and overworked fire crews.

While west coasters fear the next big earth quake and our southern neighbors are on the lookout for funnel clouds and hurricanes, the site of thick, black clouds of smoke in nearby hills are what keeps us Northerners awake at night.
