Council News Chief Kevin Sabourin and Mayor Ron Rody

Deputy Chief John Spekking and Mayor Ron Rody Article & photos by Barb Fisher   The gallery was filled with our impressive Fire Department volunteers, in full uniform and looking very professional in showing their support for two of their own - Chief Kevin Sabourin and Deputy Chief John Spekking. Mayor Rody presented both with Exemplary Service Medals for their 20 years of dedicated service in keeping our town and residents safe.   A representative from the town's auditor KPMG presented a report of the Municipality's 2015 Financial Statements and summarized stating an acceptable level in our financial health. This report is public information and can be accessed at the Municipal Offices.   Years of research confirms that child care educators promote the well-being of children and respond to the needs of parents, families and the broader community by supporting quality of life so that citizens can fully participate in and contribute to the economic and social life of their community. Many studies show that

trained and knowledgeable Early Childhood Educators and child care staff are the key to quality child care, and that good wages and working conditions are associated with higher job satisfaction and morale, lower staff turnover which leads to high quality education and care. In recognition of the education, dedication and commitment of child care workers to children, their families and quality of life of the community, Council proclaimed Wednesday, Octoer 26 as the 16th Annual "Child Care Worker & Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day".   A new Policy for the Proceedings of Council and Committees is in progress whereby the Regular Council meeting is reduced from two meetings per month to one meeting to be held on the 1st Tuesday of each month, and the time changed from 7:00 to 6:00 p.m. Notice of this change will be posted at the Municipal Offices and local media will be advised.   According to Policy AD-003 approving out-ofprovince travel, two requests have been received and

Council approved the travel of the Director of Community Services and Tourism to attend two "Snowmobile USA Shows": Milwaukee, WI on Oct. 13-16, and Novi, MI on Nov. 3-7, 2016.   The Children's Aid Societies of Ontario are participating in the Purple Ribbon Campaign to create awareness of child abuse and neglect. Everyone is encouraged to learn about preventing child abuse and neglect, be a good parent, volunteer/ foster/adopt, and invest in children and youth, and to wear a purple ribbon in solidarity. Council proclaimed the month of October 2016 to be Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month, and urges everyone to join with the Children's Aid Society of Algoma in ensuring the protection and well-being of all children.   The list of accounts for the month of August in a total amount of $1,191,130.88 was approved for payment by Council.   On May 20, 2014 Council passed a Resolution regarding the Clearance for Preliminary East West Tie Transmission Line Survey (Project) for Upper Canada Transmission Inc. operating as Nextbridge Infrastructure LP, collected by its agent, CanACRE Ltd. This original agreement has expired and Nextbridge has requested an extension. Council approved the extension and authorized Mayor and Clerk to sign the Clearance for Preliminary East West Tie Transmission Line Survey (Project) for Upper Canada Transmission Inc. operating as Nextbridge Infrastructure LP, collected by its agent, CanACRE Ltd.   The Municipality has agreed to conduct a feasibility study for a Community Hub that would include municipal, court and policing services for which sufficient funds were provided in the 2016 Operating Budget. Request for Proposals for this purpose was issued and two responses were received and evaluated. Council accepted the staff recommendation and awarded the feasibility study to Kresin Engineering in the amount of $17,500 plus HST. Continued on page 2....

Music Night At The Library Article & photo by Barb Fisher   This is the second music night held this summer at our Public Library, and what a great evening it was. Don Charbonneau and friends, daughter Dawn, and Rebecca Coughlin gently floated their beautiful music up close and personal to an eager group, some coming specifically to take in the musical evening and some pleasantly surprised with the background melodies as they selected their reading material. Don played many tunes from his cd collection and reminisced on our northern pastimes in some old favourites, fishing, canoeing and travelling the ACR. He brought tears to our eyes in his musical portrayal of a Dad with Alzheimer's, "Out

AN

My Window" and a tribute to Terry Fox in his lyrical story "Running, Running and I'm Free". Dawn, very talented in her own right, accompanied with the guitar, melodica and backup vocals. Rebecca provided the violin accompaniment which perfectly completed the down-home comfy feeling of the evening.   Check out the full range of what our Library has to offer year round. There is always something going on: numerous clubs offered during the long winter days and nights, computer and iPad access, friendly and helpful librarians who love to stop and chat, and the membership is free for all Wawa residents. Hope that you will join us for the next music night.
