Terry Fox Run - 37 Years & Still Running Article and photos by Barb Fisher Thirty-seven years ago Terry Fox challenged every Canadian to take up his cause and every year since by joining the quest, pledging and raising funds for innovative cancer research has changed thousands of lives in making our world a better place.

Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope is one of the most identifiable and cherished events in Canadian history and remains an enduring symbol of courage, selflessness and hope. Anyone can get cancer.

Everyone can help cure it.

The participants gathered last Sunday at the Community Centre to register their pledges and give memorial tribute to our beloved Lori Johnson, whose candle of hope was burning brightly to remind us of the quest of the day. The enthusiastic crowd's spirit was not dampened by the wet weather which only brought to mind that Terry did not let inclement weather deter him from his goal. And as a bonus, wet t-shirts could be used by the more leisurely paced runners as proof of their efforts.

The campaign attracted 50 registered participants with anyone else invited to join in, which included every school, club, organization; virtually

everyone in town who has experienced a loved one battling cancer sometime in their life. The 5km route circling town invited runners, walkers and bikers to enjoy mingling, catching up on friendships with refreshments and healthy snacks provided back at the Community Centre.

All town schools held their own pledge collecting regime and took part in mini runs about town during school hours before the weekend, and many community groups donned matching t-shirts demonstrating collective solidarity in their goal. The Wawa Travellers Peewee Hockey team had the ante upped with their managers offering a prize to the top three

finishers in their running team. Winning t-shirts were won by Madrix Bouchard, Joe Huff and Quinn Laing.

Congratulations.

Co-ordinator Nadine Cartledge, representing the Terry Fox Foundation thanked everyone taking part and showed much appreciation for the more than $3,000.00 pledged this year.

When added to the previous years' total, the tally totals more than $77,000.00 raised by our community members since the Run's inception in 1980; an impressive accomplishment to be proud of indeed. Nadine thanked the many volunteers who served in registration, route directions, attending water sta-

Wawa Baptist Church has a new website and email just in time for their move from the Mission to the Seniors’ Dropin Centre, a.k.a. the “Wawa Goose Seniors’ Club” at 63 Broadway Avenue in Wawa.

The new website is located at wawabaptistchurch.com and their Facebook page, and new email are posted on the Contact page of the website.

The first service in town was held Sunday, September 17, at 10:00 a.m. Next Sunday, September 24, Wawa Baptist Church will hold its Grand Opening, with desserts and beverages to be served following the service, in celebration of the move to Wawa.

What else is new at Wawa

Legion News We had our first meeting and things look not too bad.

The executive are working on a few ideas for fund raising and our ladies auxiliary is having their first luncheon on September 28th. If we can find some fish for fish fry in October, we will announce the date later. Already our trusted Dick Watson is working on a Christmas dinner dance with entertainment.

I watched a program about a chap in Holland who looks after the trees and he showed a few pictures of a tree where a Canadian soldier carved: “Canada, I was here May 8 1945” Once again the KEEP THEM ROLLING people who restored and keep in shape Army jeeps and other rolling material from USA and Canadian forces. They drove them in the “race to the bridge” tour with hundreds of vehicles from which I noticed many Canadian and the streets of Oosterbeek and Arnhem were lined with thousands of people especially those who carried veterans.

They never forget the Bridge to far and it was nice to see the many youngsters giving high fives to the occupants as they drove by. And the war cemetery was buried under the flowers laid by children.

Johnnie asked his Mom, “Please can I read in bed till I fall asleep?” His Mom said, “OK then, but make sure NOT 1 minute more!”

To all our Comrades sick at home, in the hospital or nursing homes you are sin our thoughts and prayers and we wish you well.

Article by Barb Fisher The meeting began with a presentation by Marnie Lafleur representing the Wawa Figure Skating Club.

She was pleased to announce that Wawa's application has been selected to host this year's Ice Skating Competition orgainized by Skate Ontario on November 4th here in Wawa. This competition, the first to be held in Wawa for 17 years, is open to ages 4 to 15 and there will be 15 local competitors. The organizers are hoping to keep admission fees to a minimum and will be offering strategies appealing to community involvement. Marnie requested that Council approve the donation of 100 Goose Pins as giveaway mementos. The event will be an exciting addition to our fall line-up of events not to be missed.

Congratulations were extended to our CAO Chris Wray for completing 20 years of Service with the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario. Councillor Sandra Weitzel attended the AMO conference and was proud to report that Wawa is readily recognized by the AMO community, in part because of Chris Wray's sound reputation. Sandra was impressed with the good ideas put forward at the AMO conference and will be bringing forward some initiatives for Council to explore.

Council approved for payment the list of accounts for August in a total amount of $3,061,910.95.

Wawa's aging infrastructure will be reconstructed on Toronto Avenue including road and sewer laterals from Klondike Street to Magpie Road. In this area weekly sewer blockages and line freeze-ups require regular maintenance from the Water and Sewer staff and it is recommended that an application under the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) be submitted to fund this reconstruction project. Council supported an application to the OCIF for funding for this undertaking, and further, the Municipality commits to fund up to $211,000.00 in installments - $6,000.00 in year 2017, $180,000.00 in year 2018, and $25,000.00 in year 2019 towards the total project costs of $2,100,000.00.

Bylaws given three readings and passed: - 3059-17 - to authorize the Municipality to enter into an Agreement with Labbe Media Incorporated for the lease of the 96 Broadway Avenue, Upper Floor, for a radio station.

Before you read any further in this column, I ask you to consider the question, “What is the purpose of government?” Take a moment to consider why we have government and what is it that it is there to do?

In broad terms, a government is put in place to organize and maintain basic public security, order, justice, freedom and the general welfare of its citizens. Government is there to keep us safe and help us prosper in every way.

Recently during our NDP caucus retreat during the quieter moments of the evenings, my friends and I reflected on our individual reason or purpose in running for Provincial office; what was our overall objective. Without exception, all of us agreed it was our personal desire to make a difference to the lives of Ontarians.

We want to make this a better place to live and raise our children and grandchildren.

That being said, we then contemplated how successful the current Wynne Liberals have been in achieving this goal. Are Ontarians better off because of policies and decisions made by successive Liberal and Conservative governments?

Consider the state of Ontario’s health care system. The Ontario Hospital Association has recently started ringing alarm bells about a worsening capacity crisis in Ontario’s hospitals.

The Wynne Liberals have shortchanged hospitals by over $300 million this year alone. As a result, over- capacity ERs and hallway medicine have become the norm in too many of our hospitals and communities. The OHA is worried about what is going

to happen this winter. Does this sound like a government that is committed to keeping us healthy?

The Liberals have finally agreed that our labour laws, which haven’t seen any improvement in over 14 years, need to be updated. Let’s face it, the entire makeup of our workplace and economy has totally changed. Today most people don’t have the same job for years like their parents used to. Thousands of Ontarians have two or even three part time jobs or are hired as contract workers.

Temporary employment is extremely common today.

Unfortunately there are many shady companies who purposely contract out risky work to temp agencies - because our laws are written so that if a temporary employee gets hurt on the job, the company isn't held fully responsible.

Why is Kathleen Wynne willing to let families who are already struggling just to get by risk their lives in dangerous workplaces? Does this sound like caring leadership?

The NDP has been calling for improvements to protect temp workers - including equal pay for equal work, and reduced barriers to permanent employment for workers employed through temporary job agencies. The NDP put forward amendments to the Wynne Liberals' labour bill which included changes that would have helped temp workers immediately, but those amendments were denied by both the Liberals and the Conservatives. They both refused to support our proposed improvements.

We have just begun a new fall session in Queen’s Park.

New Democrats have always been, and always will be, committed to improving the lives of Ontarians. The NDP is looking ahead to the new session determined to focus our efforts on what matters to families: prescription drug coverage for everyone regardless of age, better health care, addressing the seniors’ care crisis, making the workplace safe and equitable for everyone, and lowering costs on essentials like hydro.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath recently she stated, “New Democrats believe that government can be about delivering for families. It can deliver the services that make life better for people. But Kathleen Wynne has let people down. She's been showing people that she's in it for herself and her party.

NDP MPPs have returned to Queen's Park committed to do all we can to make life better everyone. Kathleen Wynne has disappointed Ontarians with her cuts to schools and hospitals and her sell-off of

Hydro One. And with Patrick Brown and his Conservatives offering only more cuts, only New Democrats have a plan to improve public services and put people at the heart of government.

Blueberry Fall Festival Draws Huge Crowd

Article & photos by Barb Fisher With remaining parking spots in short supply I entered the curling area of the Community Centre and joined the throng of eager folk taking in the many varied kiosks and exhibits showcasing once again what a talented group of people are right here in our and surrounding community. I visited every booth to marvel at all the gifts and services on display and chatted with the crafters displaying their wonderful handiwork. There was an unlimited variety of knitted and crocheted apparel, scarves, mitts, baby sweaters, recycled clothing, kids' novelties, cosmetics and skin products, fingernail care and designs, customized jewelry, sewn housewares, novelty teatowels, soy candles containing a jewelled surprise in each, sewn mittens fashioned from recycled sweat-

ers, uniquely flavoured tea, bath fragrances and soaps, personalized wall hangings and mugs, fashionable leggins, beautifully hand loomed blankets, and our own author Raymond MacDonnell's array of Maggie-Doodle children's books. Many vendors showcased their versatility and added baked goods, preserves and sweet treats to their wares to entice the most hesitant shopper. I was drawn again to Jeanette Pike's display of strawberry jam preserves made solely from wild strawberries and I could sense the satisfaction in her description of her berry picking regime. It takes her three hours to pick four cups of cleaned berries, all done in the bush while enjoying every minute in our wonderful wilderness paradise.

A variety of other displays of interest included: Type 2 diabetes risk warnings offered

by the Lady Dunn Health Centre with The North Algoma Diabetes Education Program, Infinity Wellness personal training and lifestyle coaching, Terry Fox run teeshirts to show solidarity in the annual run happening the following day, Lady Dunn Health Foundation selling tickets in support of their latest fund drive, and Wawa Family Health Team with programs aimed at seniors to "Stay on Your Feet".

The Wawa Green Project gave great information at their Energy Booth with the Municipality and EDC collaborating with Algoma Power Inc, Algoma Energy Solutions and Buywise Consulting.

EDC reps reminded us all about heat and water saving strategies and offered a free draw for a composter. Algoma Energy Solutions gave information on solar, wind and green energy alternatives that can be employed residentially and commercially.

The Buywise Consulting rep gave info on the Home Reno Rebate plan which enables cash back for home improvements that lower energy bills, increase the value of one's home and provides more comfort all year round.

No fall fair would be complete without the fresh vegetable displays. Desbarats Produce from the Soo area displayed a wide variety for sale of almost any vegetable you would want, all grown organically and with no chemicals

added. Again I stand in awe of George Karasek who proudly displayed his larger than life vegetables all grown in his own backyard on Broadway Ave. Even though every participant was a winner, in the Veggie Braggin' Rights contest, George placed first with his huge potato, red cabbage and green cabbage weighing in at a whopping 13 lbs. In the most unusually shaped veggie, John Morrison's potato placed first, and the basket of plenty award went to Maria Huard. In the blueberry dessert contest Rebecca Goodmurphy took first with her Blueberry Bombs, and Brycen Roy came in second with his deliciously tasting muffins. The Mustangs girls hockey team again this year challenged an opposing group to beat them in the Pie Eating Contest. This year volunteers from the audience stepped up to the challenge, but by press time I can't seem to get a concensus on the winner. At the Fall Festival everyone is a winner!

There was plenty going on to occupy the kids. Superior Children's Centre Best Start Hub's Robin and Pauline had indoor games and an art and crafts corner set up with face painting by Pauline who never seems to run out of unique designs to camouflage the most spirited of our youngsters. Spilling out on the rear field, Victim Services had the bar-b-que fired up and sold out offering hot dogs to the spectators, and kids lined up to take a chance at laser tag, the climbing wall and a new experience for me to report on, the waxed hand casting process. Children got

a chance to stick their hand into molten wax, but not so hot to cause any danger, and then after the applications were complete, the hand cast slipped off to be painted as the child desired. Wow, another novel idea to keep our children abreast of the marvels of our future.

As always a great family exposition such as this Fall Festival cannot be successful without much hard hitting from behind the scenes.

Thanks goes out to organizer Nancy Donald, Assistant Chair of Wawa Special Events in conjunction with the Township, and the myriad of volunteers who helped congeal the plan to fruition. Well done everyone.

The TIFF Mystery TIFF – The Toronto International Film Festival 2017. New movies have been playing for the last ten days.

There have been several new films being previewed this year.

That is down from other years but more stars are showing up on the red carpet and around the city - wining, dining, shopping, and who knows what else.

One of the more obscure and not well advertised films was titled “The Mystery of the Shadow”. It was based on the murder-mystery genre from the forties. Think Sunset Boulevard, or Double Indemnity as examples. A lot of the movie was shot at the famous Casa Loma castle in Toronto. It was filmed in black & white, to give that mood of the time that was being depicted.

The director, Alf Hitchcockly, was an unknown Canadian with the Hollywood set. He had made a couple of documentaries previously, that had made the rounds of the arts scene in Toronto and Montreal. But this was his debut as a movie director. The actors and actresses were all Canadian as well, and all in their debuts on screen.

It revolved around a rich family who lived in Casa Loma back in the forties. Sir Quilbert Hathaway, was a rich tycoon originally from Liverpool, England, who made his millions in the automobile parts manufacturing business. His wife, Sally, was a Canadianborn socialite from Toronto.

Quilbert's brother, Brinton, was the playboy of the family, and was always frittering away his trust fund, and continually hitting up Quilbert for a loan from it which their father had set up years earlier, before his untimely death in 1919, just after World War I. Quilbert, being the older son, was trustee of the fund, and held the purse strings. Naturally, Brinton resented this, having to go cap in hand to get money out of his trust. Quilbert always gave him a hard time, but in the end he doled out the funds as requested, except for the latest request. Of course, the money was spent on gambling, and 'wine, women and song'. Mafia boss, Vincenso Collegiamoni was rumoured to have had a contract out for Brinton, because he was not paying off his debts at his casino. Naturally, Brinton does get murdered, and Collegiamoni is charged with the crime. It appeared to be a mob hit as Brinton was gunned down at a small Italian restaurant in downtown Toronto owned by Collegianoni.

The Crown Attorney had been looking for a reason to get a real charge against him, one that would be sure to stick this time, because the mobs' lawyers were always able to get previous charges dismissed. This time his lawyer claimed the hit was meant for his client, not Brinton.

The C.A., Gordon Redd, was sure he had an iron-clad case this time, despite the lawyer's claim.

He had witnesses who had seen him and Brinton together in a local park. They recounted how they had a loud argument, concluding with Vincenso standing

up, and yelling out a threat that he had better pay up his debts by the end of the week or there would be dire consequences.

Finally, there were other witnesses who had seen the two of them together on the following Saturday night at this local Italian restaurant. Brinton was overheard pleading for an extension of time to get the money that he owed as his brother was not going to give him the money, so he had find an alternative source. Despite his pleas, Collegiamoni told him that the two of them were going to go to the casino, and see about working out a 'payment schedule'.

The witnesses all knew that meant a beating or other means of 'gentle persuasion'. They were seen heading together out the back door to the parking lot where Collegiamoni's Ferrari was parked. Brinton was seen struggling to get away, begging for his life. Shortly after they left the restaurant, shots rang out. One of the cooks from the kitchen ran out to see what had happened. He saw Collegiamoni bent over Brinton, who was laying on the ground. When he pointed the gun at him, the cook ran back into the restaurant, and immediately called the police.

He denied shooting Brinton, of course. He claimed he was hit on the head and knocked out, and had just recovered as he was leaning over him. He claimed to be just looking to see what condition he was in. Of course the CA saw it differently, and was sure he had enough to nail him this time. He was positive that the jury would see it that way too at the trial, once he carefully laid out the case to them. And he was successful. The jury bought it. So Redd got his conviction.

The only problem with this case was that this time he really was innocent. That is revealed in the last sequence in the movie.

It was a flashback to the crime scene out in the dark parking lot from that night, showing what really happened. It began by showing the Ferrari and a black nondescript sedan parked next to it. Then it panned over to the two men coming out the door of the restaurant, before switching back to showing a shadowy figure in a black trench coat and black fedora, casting a shadow over the eyes, making it impossible to see who it really was, getting out of the other car, and dropping down behind the trunk of the Ferrari. Next shot was of the figure hitting Collegiamoni in the back of the head with a pistol, knocking him out and seeing him fall to the ground, and then aiming it at Brinton, shooting him dead as he was about to get in the passenger side door of the Ferrari. Then it is a view of the figure placing the pistol in Collegiamoni's left hand, and then running back to the sedan, and getting in. Finally it is a shot looking in the front window, as the fedora is being taken off, and the head is shaking the long dark hair away from the face. It suddenly revealed who this shadowy figure really was – Sally Hathaway, Quilbert's wife!

Her car pulls away out of the parking lot, and up the street.

The camera is still on her, as she gives a monologue about that he deserved what he got, with the audience not sure who she was referring to until she reveals that she was having an affair with Redd, the Crown Attorney, and Brinton had found out. She declared that she had solved two problems. That had shut up Brinton, and secondly this case of Collegiamoni's frame up for murder would help Redd's career a lot, and make him indebted to her forever.

An evil smile crossed her face before cutting to the last scene of the back of the sedan speeding up the street and disappearing from view. Then it flashes 'THE END', and lastly the credits.

Because it was one of the lesser movies being shown at TIFF, the opening was scheduled for the second Wednesday of the festival. Hitchcockly, wanted as much publicity as he could get to boost the chances of his movie getting picked up by a distributor. So he forked out a pile of money to rent out Casa Loma to have the opening night gala there, where so much of the film had been made. He put the word out everywhere for the movie studio heads and independent company executives, TV entertainment show reporters, and anyone else he could think of, inviting them to come back after the showing, hoping to draw in some A-stars and reporters and even the pushy paparazzi. He got all his stars, except for Gary Granter to agree to come back for the event after the movie was shown. They all decided that to make it more realistic, it would be better for him not to attend this event, since he had been killed off in the movie. They had even agreed to dress in their forties costumes that they had worn in the movie, and would all come into the room and discuss the movie and the story line, and the guilt of each character, as they all had their faults. Hitchcockly got a band in to play music from the forties. He hired a catering company to lay out the food and booze, and got the grand ballroom decorated in the forties decor.

Everything was going perfectly too, on that night. Lots of those folks he wanted to show up actually did. Everyone began mingling, sipping on the wine and nibblers that the waiters brought around. He was glad to hear some of them talking about his movie among themselves, as he wandered around the room, incognito.

Eventually the whispers began, wondering where the cast were that had been advertised as being there. Hitchcockly held off until he was aware that some of the guests were on the verge of leaving.

He signaled them to make their grand entrance. The band struck up a Glenn Miller tune.

They came in through the library doorway, adjacent to the ballroom. They slowly sauntered down the room and stopped at the huge fireplace at the far end of the ballroom. That got everyone's attention. They posed for photos. Then just as they were set to head back to the library to

begin the taping of the interview part of the deal which would be shown for the next day on the morning shows, it happened.

Out of the crowd one of the waiters stepped out, and ran towards the actors, pointing a pistol. He fired one shot right at Joanne. It hit her in the left shoulder. She dropped to the ground in pain and shock, as the waiter shouted out, “That will teach you for being unfaithful to your devoted husband, Quilbert, and framing that poor mob guy. Justice will be done.

You shall pay for your evil ways.”

But before he could fire a second round into her crumpled body, Hitchcockly and a couple other men nearby wrestled him to the ground, and yanked the gun from his hand. A struggle ensued, but they were finally able to subdue him. Chaos broke out among the guests as they tried to escape the room. Except for he paparazzi, who had a field day, snapping photos of the scene.

A couple of the TV cameramen who were there from their stations, also got some great video of the whole scene. Hitchcockly looked around, thanking his lucky stars. What better publicity could I have ever gotten than this, he admitted.

He said to the other two men who were holding down the waiter, “Let's lock him up in the study for now, until the police get here.” They dragged him into the room, and hogtied him with a lamp electrical cord, which was the only thing they could find in a hurry. Then Hitchcockly said to the two of them, “Thanks a lot. Go on back and have some more wine on me. I'm so sorry for this turn of events. Don't let it dampen your spirits.” The two declined his offer, and said they were getting out of there right now. He apologized once more as they headed out the door.

Once the door had been closed, he turned to the waiter.

“Well, that was a perfect job.

I don't know who hired you, but well done. Loved your little declaration. I will try to get you into my next picture. You are a great actor. Loved the line about justice being done. I should get back out there and see how Joanne is. She did a great job too, pretending to have been shot. Those blanks still must have hurt. You were a bit closer than you should have been. I will come back and untie you in a minute. I just need to see what's happening out there.”

He headed towards the door, then froze, as this man all tied up uttered a chilling remark.

“What blanks? That was a real pistol. I meant every word I said. Quilbert is such a great man. He doesn't deserve such a conniving wife as Sally. I'm glad Brinton was killed. I didn't like him anyway. I also know that mob boss who was framed for murder will appreciate what I have done for him. I will talk to him tomorrow when I go to his casino. Thank goodness he is out on bail, awaiting his appeal.

I will have helped him win it, with what I did here tonight.”

Hitchcockly stared into his face, and realized what a crazed individual he had here. This guy really believed this was real. He was really delusional. He hesitantly asked him, “You weren't hired by anyone, were you? You really think this is all real, don't you?”

He just shook his head, and muttered, “Of course this is real.

But now that I have killed Sally, I have completed my job. Both

that CA and the mob boss will thank me personally for rescuing them from her guiles.” He smiled, and seemed to turn inwards into himself.

Hitchcockly stood there momentarily, staring at this madman, digesting what he had just ranted on about. Then he remembered again that Joanne had been shot. He rushed out of the room to find out how she was.

He was relieved to see her sitting in a chair near the fireplace. Someone had padded her shoulder with some white cloth napkins, now soaked in a red stain from the blood. She was holding onto her shoulder with her right hand, obviously in pain and shock. But she was alive.

“Thank God!” he whispered to himself. He hurried over to her, and asked how she was feeling.

She said she was okay – just waiting for the ambulance to take her to the hospital. Then she added with a wry smile, “Well, this was a bit more publicity than you had expected, wasn't it! You just never know where these crazies will show up. That catering company should check out who it hires a bit more closely, eh what!” She tried to chuckle, but the pain stopped her. He agreed with her. He didn't want to upset her any further by correcting her that this guy was not hired by the caterers, but acted on his own and that he just dressed up as a waiter to get inside, and then be able to blend in, before attacking her. Just then the police and ambulance attendants arrived. They rushed her off to the hospital.

Once he saw her off safely, after telling her he would follow her there to see she got settled in okay, he went back to the study to meet with the two police officers who had come to take this assailant away. As he entered the room, he watched them wandering around the room, as if looking for something – or someone, he immediately realized.

“He's over there on the couch,” he pointed out to them. But he stared in horror as he noticed that he was not there. “What the... where is he?” he asked. The one officer asked the same question of Hitchcockly. They then all looked over to the window, and saw that it was open. They all rushed over and looked out.

The lamp and chord were laying below the sill. They realized that he had got himself untied, and must have escaped out that way.

But they never found him that night, or any other time either.

He just vanished into thin air, it appeared. They never recovered the fired pistol either, which would have been so helpful in getting a DNA sample for coming up with a name of the shooter. In the confusion someone must have picked it up? Here we go again – another mystery to be solved.....

Meanwhile, offers started pouring in for Hitchcockly and his stars for upcoming movies that were in the works. They were all still in shock and disbelief of how this whole experience had changed their lives and most importantly, their careers.

That was their public statements anyway. Privately, they were delighted how it had all worked out, especially that gun man who tried to kill Joanne. It's funny, they thought, how it is not the plan, but the umplanned that can make the difference between success and failure!

Please note a change in the repair schedule at the Harry McCluskie Municipal Marina. Due to favorable circumstances, the repairs to slips 1 through 3 have been completed faster than anticipated. As such, the Municipality has opened these slips effective immediately.

There will also be further repairs to a concrete base on slip 2 as well as the water and power hookups on slips 1 and 2. These repairs will be completed intermittently over the month of September, with all repairs to slips 1 and 2 completed by October 1st.

Michipicoten Chronicles

Alexander Young Jackson As the autumn sun begins to entice the dazzling colours across the local landscape, we can understand why so many artists, including the world famous Group of Seven, visited our corner of the province. Over the years, one of Wawa’s many part-time residents includes the most prolific member of the Group of Seven, Alexander Young Jackson.

Born in Montreal in 1882 A.Y. Jackson took to painting at a young age. During his formative years, his passion led him to the streets of Chicago and the battlefields of Europe during World War I. His true attraction however was to the remote wilderness regions of Canada.

A.Y. Jackson was a founding member of the famous Group of Seven who left an incredible legacy on the Canadian art scene. Jackson joined J.E.H. MacDonald, Lawren Harris and Frank Johnston during a boxcar trip on the Algoma Central Railway in 1919. Their paintings immortalized the beauty and rugged nature of northern Algoma and eastern Lake Superior.

Not surprisingly A.Y. was an avid outdoor enthusiast and loved to explore, hike and search out the best location for his next sketch or drawing. A.Y. was so taken with the Algoma region that he purchased cottage property with

the Ross family on the shores of Michipicoten Bay near Sandy Beach. From 1955 to 1966 he made regular visits to his remote cabin and explored the rugged shoreline by boat from Gargantua to Pukaskwa.

He created well over 100 small sketches and paintings throughout the Wawa area including Michipicoten Harbour, Wawa Lake, Michipicoten River, Sandy Beach and Michipicoten River Village. Many of these lesser known paintings are only now beginning to reappear in private collections and art auctions.

Jackson moved to the Ottawa region in 1955. In 1967 he experienced a devastating stroke that put an end to his painting career.

His later years were spent as an artist-in-residence at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinberg, Ontario where he is buried. A.Y. Jackson died in 1974 at the age of 91.

For those who visit Sandy Beach, you can view a commemorative Group of Seven display, complete with a painter’s chair and easel. This interpretive panel recognizes the importance of the Group of Seven and identifies the beach as a regular backdrop for A.Y. Jackson’s creative inspirations during his time in Wawa.
