Rotary Club Of Wawa Inbound Student Has Arrived!

The Rotary Club of Wawa is very happy to announce that Gregoire Mazal from France arrived in Wawa on August 26, 2017 to start his year at École St. Joseph here in Wawa. Gregoire is classified as an ‘inbound’ student and he joins hundreds of high school students who come into Canada and the United States for approximately one year – learning the language and the culture and sharing theirs with their new found friends and ‘families’. Wawa is not unfamiliar with hosting exchange students as we have been doing so for many decades, beginning in 1978.

Over the years we have hosted many students and our many of our young people have travelled to distant, foreign lands.

Gregoire has been enjoying his first few weeks with his host family, learning to fish and hunt, and also having attended a conference held for ‘inbounds’ in Michigan.

Gregoire will be staying with his current host family until after the Christmas break at which time he will move in with his 2nd host family for three months. He will then move in with his third and final host family for another

three (3) months and then the year will be over. I am sure that Gregoire is anticipating a great year here in Wawa and if you happen to see him on the street give him an enthusiastic ‘hello’ and a big ‘welcome’!

It takes some effort to become an exchange student beginning with an application, followed up by an interview with local Rotary members, and another by Rotary International, and medical and dental appointments.

Students must be considered ‘good’ students with an awareness of world news and issues. They must be confi-

dent in their ability to leave home and go somewhere completely foreign to them for a full year, and they must be mature enough to exercise good judgement and obey rules set by Rotary and by the various host families.

The Wawa Rotary Club is now looking for interested young people who may wish to go to another country in 2018. There are posters up at the high schools, and we encourage anyone between the ages of 15 and 18 to call Bev Boyd at (705) 852-1221 or speak to their principal or guidance counsellor if they think this program might be

for them. The application deadline is September 30, so there isn’t time to waste if you are at all interested.

Costco Supports Students In Need Through The Donation Of Back Packs CSCNO On September 21, Costco Wholesale donated 420 back packs to the Conseil scolaire catholique du NouvelOntario (CSCNO) that will be distributed to its 27 elementary schools in the coming days to support students in need. After dropping off

most of the bags at the school board office, Costco representatives made their way to École St-Joseph (Sudbury) to conduct the first school delivery of back packs where they got to see the impact of their donation. The CSCNO schools in the following

communities will benefit from this support: Greater Sudbury, Warren, St-Charles, Noëlville, Espanola, Spanish, Elliot Lake, Blind River, Sault Ste. Marie, Wawa, Chapleau, Dubreuilville and Hornepayne.

Representatives from Ontario’s 21 universities will be in Wawa at Michipicoten HS on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., for the University Information Program (UIP).

This free event offers high school students from the surrounding area, and their parents, the opportunity to speak in-person with multiple university representatives. Any high school students in the area are welcome to attend, regardless of which school board their school belongs to.

The UIP offers students who are considering an Ontario university the opportunity to learn more about

admission requirements, scholarships, residence, the application process, campus life and much more. The event is designed to assist graduating high school students in making an informed decision before they apply to university in January 2018.

The event also aims to help younger students with high school course selections in order to guide them toward future university programs.

Students and their parents will have the opportunity to learn more about Ontario’s 21 universities in either a fairor presentation-style format, where they can visit each Ontario university represen-

tative individually.

Students who are interested in attending are encouraged to confirm the UIP schedule in their area with their guidance office.

The UIP is hosted exclusively by Ontario universities.

Each university participates in joint visits to high schools across the province each fall.

Each UIP event is organized by the University Information Program Working Group with oversite from the Standing Committee on Student Recruitment, and the Ontario University Registrars’ Association.

Ministry of Education As the new school year gets underway, Ontario is making it easier for children and families to access quality beforeand after-school care.

Indira Naidoo-Harris, Minister Responsible for Early Years and Child Care, was at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Toronto today to announce that more than 80 per cent of schools across Ontario are now offering before- and after-school programs for 4-12 year olds.

As of September 1, 2017, Ontario now requires school boards to provide beforeand after-school programs for children up to age 12, in all publicly funded elementary schools serving students up to Grade 6, where there is sufficient demand. These programs provide additional opportunities for play-based programming, and are a critical support for parents who rely on before- and afterschool care to accommodate

their work schedules.

Making licensed child care more affordable and more accessible for families is part of Ontario's plan to create jobs, grow the economy and help people in their everyday lives.

Quick Facts • Before- and after-school programs for 4-12 year olds may be directly operated by a school board, delivered by a licensed child care centre, or, for after-school programs serving 6-12 year olds, an authorized recreational and skill-building program.

• Ontario will help 100,000 more children aged 0-4 access affordable, quality, and responsive licensed child care in schools, homes, and communities over the next five years.

As part of the expansion plan, the province announced $1.6 billion in new funding to build

45,000 new child care spaces in schools and other community spaces across Ontario over the next five years.

On June 6, 2017, Ontario released its Renewed Early Years and Child Care Policy Framework and Expansion Plan, which outlines a vision for a high-quality, inclusive and affordable early years and child care system.

Since 2012-13, the number of licensed child care spaces in Ontario has grown to 406,395 – an increase of 38 per cent.

Time For An Indigenous Housing Strategy This October, Statistics Canada will release data from the 2016 long-form census that will give us a snapshot of Canada’s housing needs. It is well understood that housing is a challenge across the country with affordability leading the list of obstacles that many Canadians face.

For Indigenous people the struggle can be even more daunting which is why New Democrats are pressing the government to do something about it. The timing is deliberate as it has been ten years since the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted.

The NDP call to action also echoes recommendations made by the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA).

It was only last March that an 11 year plan for housing, which included commitments to northern and off-reserve Indigenous populations, was spelled out in the Federal Budget. Advocates are saying that the dollar amounts are insufficient and only account for a fraction of the housing money that will be rolled out over the next 11 years. New Democrats are telling the government that promises are not enough and that they urgently need to put words into action to ensure that Indigenous Peoples’ rights to housing are respected.

A big reason the government funding needs to be increased relates to the fact that Indigenous populations are the fastest growing segments of the Canadian population, and almost half of them live off reserve. Add to that the fact that urban Indigenous people are 8 times more likely to be homeless than the rest of the population and it’s easy to understand the need to create a specific Indigenous housing strategy.

The budget could have

gone a long way to addressing that need because the challenges have more to do with dollar amounts than sentiment, but it didn’t go far enough. Instead, only 225 million dollars over 11 years, or about $20 million a year will be available to tackle offreserve Indigenous housing shortfalls. First Nations communities will divvy up another 300 million dollars over that same period of time, but in both instances the money is far from what is needed to meet demand.

The CHRA has an Indigenous housing caucus that recognizes the large number of Indigenous led and Indigenous serving organizations who are members of the organization. Executive Director, Jeff Morrison says that CHRA is hoping to develop a more effective and self-sufficient Indigenous Housing sector, in real partnership with Indigenous communities and the organizations that represent them. They see this as an important step in establishing a true Nation-to-Nation relationship.

It is worth noting that the government has committed to releasing a national housing strategy later this fall. We should also remember that the Prime Minister campaigned on a promise to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Despite that promise, Canada has yet to adopt it.

The declaration includes an article which recognizes the right to housing and affirms that States must take effective measures to ensure the sustained improvement of housing issues. New Democrats are urging the government to use the national housing strategy to do a better job of meeting the goals of that article.

News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP

Senior’s Golf September 18th

Pretty well anyone who knows me at all would not be the least surprised to learn that one of the things I love most about my job as MPP is getting to meet many truly fascinating individuals.

From these incredible opportunities, I can honestly say that I have learned so much from people and about people. And I can assure you that Algoma-Manitoulin has no shortage of both wise and smart residents.

Early in my career as an MPP I had the fortune of meeting an elderly woman that I was assisting with an issue. For a while our discussion headed in the direction of what people expect from their government and political leaders. She said to me she felt that political leaders of every stripe say they care about everyone who they are elected to represent. Politicians are always quick to point out this policy and that program and several initiatives that are going to solve all of our woes. She said her friends often say to her that they just don’t know who to vote for at election time.

But this wise older woman said her response is usually this: “If you want to know someone’s mind, listen to their words.

If you want to know their heart, watch their actions.”

Consider for a moment some of the some of the bravest workers in our society – our first responders. These people show up for duty no matter what. They face some pretty horrific situations in their commitment to help others. These workers have to deal firsthand with the very worst impacts of violence and trauma. They endure violent situations and are exposed to the cumulative effect of years of being exposed to primary and secondary trauma. As a result they sometimes experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some of them end up having to re-live these traumatic events, over and over again. And when they reach out for help themselves they are forced to prove their PTSD is work-related through a long, cumbersome and expensive WSIB appeals process.

For years the Liberals have been encouraged to address this issue by including such workers in Bill 163. Kathleen Wynne keeps telling us how her party cares for us all. First responders spend their working lives taking care of us. It is long past time that we start to take care of them in return.

NDP MPP Taras Natyshak recently introduced a private member’s bill that would see nurses, probation and parole officers, and extended police service employees be provided with presumptive PTSD cov-

erage for WSIB benefits. New Democrats care for those who care for us.

You may or may not have heard of the term “code zero” in reference to health care. A code zero is when there is one – or even zero – ambulances available to be dispatched when someone in trouble calls 9-1-1. Recently NDP leader Andrea Horwath reported that as of Sep. 1, there had been 79 code zero events in her riding of Hamilton alone.

Ontarians deserve to know that when they call 9-1-1 in an emergency, help will be there.

These code zeros are lifethreatening events that occur sometimes two or three times per week, and the coroner is now investigating whether they may have already contributed to a tragic death of some individuals. Andrea went on further to say paramedics and local emergency service staff have told her that code zeros are attributed largely to increased hospital wait times, forcing ambulances to wait to off-load their patient. And why are hospital wait times increasing? It is because of the Wynne Liberals funding freezes as well as Patrick Brown's Conservative predecessor who closed 28 hospitals, cut 6,000 nurses and eliminated 7,000 hospital beds. Is this the action of a caring government?

Across this province, people living with addiction and mental health issues are struggling to access the care and resources they need. People requiring urgent care are left languishing on waiting lists or are simply being left to fend for themselves where no programs exist at all. This is especially true here in Northern Ontario. In the first week that the Legislature resumed sitting, the NDP put forth a bill that would create a ministry specifically devoted to mental health and addictions.

Despite the fact that every single Liberal MPP who was present voted against making improvements for mental health and addictions, the bill passed a critical vote in the legislature. By voting against this important legislation, Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals are showing Ontarians exactly where their priorities lie.

“If you want to know someone’s mind, listen to their words. If you want to know their heart, watch their actions.”

They won’t consider themselves victims. They are survivors.

They faced the blazing headlines and helped lead the investigation that caught the man who changed their lives forever.

And now that Eddie Como, the College Hill rapist, has been murdered, shot down outside a packed courthouse moments before his trial was about to

begin, all three women are openly ecstatic that he’s dead.

They are also the prime suspects in his murder.

Ontario Cracking Down On Careless And Distracted Driving With Tough New Penalties

Province Taking Action To Keep Pedestrians, Cyclists And Drivers Safe Ministry of Transportation Ontario plans to crack down on careless and distracted driving with tough new rules and penalties that would help improve road safety and keep the most vulnerable road users - including pedestrians and cyclists - safe.

Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Eleanor McMahon, were in Toronto today to announce the tough new road-safety measures. They were joined

by Han Dong, MPP for Trinity-Spadina.

The province plans to introduce new legislation this fall that, if passed, would help protect pedestrians and cyclists and reduce the number of people killed or injured by impaired, distracted and dangerous drivers. The proposed measures include: • A new offence for careless driving causing death or bodily harm with penalties that include fines, licence suspension and imprisonment • Tougher penalties for dis-

tracted driving, such as using a cellphone while operating a vehicle, including higher fines, more demerit points, and license suspensions • Increased penalties for drivers who fail to yield for pedestrians and escalating fines for drivers who are convicted of multiple pedestrian-related offences within a fiveyear window • Expanding the use of rear flashing blue lights for enforcement and emergency vehicles.

• In addition, the province is consulting on the use of cameras on school buses that capture the offence of illegally passing a school bus, so that this evidence can be admitted into court without a witness.

For 16 years in a row, Ontario's roads have been ranked either first or second safest in North America, but more can still be done.

These strong measures add to recently-announced tough

new penalties for those who drive under the influence of drugs, including cannabis.

Keeping Ontario's roads safe is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

Quick Facts On average, one person is killed on Ontario’s roads every 17 hours. In 2014, pedestrians and cyclists made up approximately 25 per cent of Ontario’s road fatalities.

While drunk driving remains in the top-five killers on Ontario’s roads, the province’s most recent roadside survey found that drivers who tested positive for drugs were more than twice the number who tested positive for alcohol.

The proposed legislation builds on existing measures Ontario has introduced to improve road safety including tougher impaired, distracted and street racing laws.

Hunting season is upon us and the Superior East Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind all hunters that safety need to be their first priority when heading out into the outdoors this fall.

Some safety rules hunters are asked to keep in mind during hunting season: Hunting Safety Rules: • All hunters must wear solid hunter orange clothing (a minimum of 400 square inches or 2,580 square centimetres above the waist) and a hunter orange head cover during gun seasons for deer, moose and elk. Outside the gun seasons for deer, moose and elk these requirements also apply to bear hunters who are not hunting from a tree stand.

• Handle firearms with care and attention at all times.

• Hunters must never shoot unless they are absolutely sure of their target and what lies beyond it.

• It is illegal to shoot from a vehicle or carry a loaded firearm in or on a vehicle.

• It is illegal to discharge a firearm from or across the travelled portion of a right of way for public vehicular traffic. In many parts of Ontario it is also illegal to have a loaded firearm, or discharge a firearm, in any part of the

right of way.

Never drink alcohol and hunt.

• If you hunt from a tree stand always wear a safety harness and use a rope to raise and lower your firearm.

General Safety: • Tell someone where you will be hunting and when you will be returning.

• Know the weather conditions in your hunting area and dress accordingly.

• In an emergency, stay calm and stay put.

• Avoid hypothermia. Know how to treat it if it strikes.

• Keep rested, hydrated and well nourished.

• Carry a survival kit and a small first aid kit with you at all times.

• Know how to build a fire in all weather conditions and carry the supplies to start one.

• Carry a map and compass or GPS unit and know how to use them.

OPP Seek Public Assistance In Solving A Break And Enter (WAWA, ON) - On Tuesday September 19, 2017 at approximately 9:00 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Chapleau) Detachment responded to a Break and Enter incident to a Sultan Ontario residence.

The incident took place between August 14, 2017 and September 16, 2017. During the incident the persons responsible took a Savage .22 calibre rifle with ammunition, 5 Buck knives, and a range finder.

At the scene investigation revealed that a male had assaulted a female As a result a 45 years old Wawa Ontario male was arrested and charged with the following offences: • Adult Assault - Spousal contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada, • Adult Obstruct Peace Officer contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada, • Adult Causing a Disturbance contrary to section 175(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was held into custody pending a bail hearing in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario on Monday September 18, 2017.

Sault Ste. Marie Man Charged With Stunt

Driving (WAWA, ON) - On Monday September 18, 2017, at approximately 5:35 a.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were on general patrols Mission road Wawa when they observed a northbound motor vehicle travelling at 122km/h in a posted 50km/h zone.

As a result a 30 years old Sault Ste. Marie Ontario male was charged with the following offence: • Adult Race a motor vehicle - Excessive Speed contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The defendant was issued a part III summons with a court date in Wawa Ontario for November 15, 2017.

OPP Charge Wawa Man With Assault (WAWA, ON) - On Monday September 18, 2017, at approximately 2:30 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment responded to a Wawa address regarding an assault complaint.

Investigation revealed that an

altercation had taken place between a male and a female.

As a result a 34 years old Wawa, Ontario male was arrested and charged with the following offence: • Adult Assault- Spousal contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa Ontario on November 6, 2017.

Theft Of Gas Results In Multiple Charges For A Quebec Woman (WAWA, ON) - On Saturday September 16, 2017, at approximately 8:20 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment received a report of a theft of gas from a Chapleau gas station. Police were given a description of both the motor vehicle and the female driver. The motor vehicle was later observed approximately 20 kilometres from Wawa on Highway 101 where it was stopped.

Investigation revealed that the motor vehicle was stolen from Quebec.

The Art Heist Mystery Laura Harris became the newly appointed Curator at the Canadian Art Gallery in Ottawa in July, 2010. She had previously been Assistant Curator at the Thomson Art Gallery in Bracebridge. She left under questionable circumstances.

The Gallery claimed it was on account of choosing poor displays that did not meet attendance and monetary expectations. She claimed it was due to 'creative differences'. But the Board was impressed with her resume, and with her conduct during the interview. They hired her on the spot.

The Gallery had an excellent collection of the old Masters, including Monet, VanGogh, Rembrandt, and daVinci, that were on permanent display.

They had one room dedicated to the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson,who drowned in Algonquin Park.

Her first task in the job was to bring in a collection of both well known and lesser known Canadian artists of the last 10 years, as part of the anniversary celebrations the Board wanted to have. This project needed to be ready for the Thanksgiving weekend in October. She presented her plans for each of the three rooms available. She concluded with the idea of joining the Group of Seven* that they already had, with Arthur Robert Tyler (who signs his paintings as A.R.T. ), a landscape artist from Northern Ontario with a style that reminded her especially of A.Y. Jackson.

She told them about going to a showing in Sault Ste. Marie, just a few weeks before she was hired here. She showed some photos that she had taken while there.

The Board saw the likeness too, and approved her plan and to have him highlighted in the Group of Seven room..

The assistant curator, Alexandre Casson, told her about his connections with the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, that had an extensive collection of their paintings. He agreed to make arrangements for them to bring a selection of some of the Group's original paintings that they did not have on display currently. She thanked him for the help, while she took on the task of getting Tyler signed up for this exhibit.

She eagerly began her quest to track down Tyler. It was a challenge, as she had no information on him at all, not even a phone number, e-mail, Twitter, or Facebook address. She started by calling the Soo gallery. They got her a phone number, and an address. Apparently he had no use for computers. “I will have to change that,” she commented to herself. She subsequently found out that he lived in a cabin way out in the 'wilderness', only accessible by the Algoma Central Railway, then hiking to a remote lake, and canoeing five miles up the lake to his cabin.

The phone number was his sister's, Anita Rosalyn Tucker. She lived in Wawa. When she talked to her, she explained that he

would be out there until after Thanksgiving. He liked to be out there at this fall season to capture the colours and mood. If she really wanted to talk to him, her best bet would be to hire a float plane to get her there, his sister recommended.

Of course, Laura was a city slicker, and was not keen on going up north into the bush, but knew it was the only way she could meet him and encourage him to put on a show at her gallery, and to meet the deadline.

So with the help of Arthur's sister, and the folks at the art gallery in the Soo, the arrangements were made to get her there. The plane took off from Ranger Lake near the Soo on a warm sunny day, typical of late September. As they approached the Agawa Canyon she began to really appreciate the works of the Group of Seven, and Arthur's passion and wonderful painting technique that matched theirs so closely. They landed on the lake at the cabin just before noon. The pilot taxied to shore, and then helped her out of the plane and onto firm ground. She almost slipped on the rocks, thanks to her city shoes, but recovered in a not too elegant pose. She noticed the pilot trying to stifle a smile.

She was embarrassed and mad at first, but once she got her footing and started up the slight incline to the cabin, she smiled back at him, and shrugged her shoulders. She knocked on the door of the cabin. When she got no response, she hesitantly tested the door to see if it was locked.

It wasn't, and she opened it fully, poking her head in and calling his name. The pilot followed her in.

They looked around the rustic cabin. She gasped as she spied a pile of paintings leaning against the wall by the picture window that overlooked a spectacular view of the lake. His easel was against the wall on the other side of the picture window. She was on the verge of looking through them when the pilot, Frank Johnson, reminded her that maybe he would not want anyone seeing them yet, especially a totally uninvited stranger. She dismissed his comment, insisting that she was just taking a quick peek. She uttered several wows as she went through them. Then she put them back. She turned her attention to the kitchen table, where he had laid out several tubes of oil paint, brushes, and some rags. She took it all in, cooing away at everything. She got out her camera and took some photos of it. It is so much a painter's abode, she kept saying to him.

Once she had her fill, he asked her what she wanted him to do.

He told her that he could wait here for awhile, but would have to head back by 3:00 p.m. That would mean having to leave her there overnight with no supplies, and come back the next day, weather permitting, of course.

She took one more look around the cabin, and immediately told him that he could go now, and to come back the next day. She

assured him that she would be okay. She added, as much to reassure herself, that she would need this time to get to know him, and sell him on getting a show ready for her art gallery. He wasn't comfortable with this idea, but she was the paying customer, so it was her call. He shrugged his shoulders, and agreed to that arrangement. She went down to the plane and saw him off, waving as he taxied up the lake, and took off. He circled, and waved to her as he disappeared over the tree tops behind the cabin. She heard the engines of the plane for several minutes. It got fainter and fainter, and finally no sound at all. That was when she realized how quiet it was out here.

She understood how he could find this place such a great place to paint, and just live. She stood there for several minutes before heading back to the cabin. She settled in at the kitchen table, and dug out the contract she hoped he would sign before she had to leave, and read it over, to make sure it was all legal. Once she was satisfied it was airtight, she got up and went to the propane fridge and opened it up to see what she could find to eat. She didn't find much that appealed to her, except for a bottled water. She then went to the cupboards and found some crackers and peanut butter to nibble on. Shortly after her 'lunch', she became sleepy, and so went over to the small settee and curled up, throwing an afghan that was laying on the back of it, over her. Before long she dropped off to sleep.

She was awoken to the thumping of feet on the steps by the door. She was just flinging the afghan off her shoulders when he opened the door and came in.

He stopped short when he saw her. He immediately asked the obvious: “Who are you? What are you doing here? Where did you come from?” She was a bit startled at the hostility in his voice, as he threw out these questions. She plucked up her nerve, and got up and went over to him, holding her right hand and arm out, planning to shake his. He backed up, closing the door behind him.

When it became obvious that he was not going to accept her hand, she dropped it beside her, and spoke up instead.

“Hi, Arthur. I am Laura Harris from the Canadian Art Gallery in Ottawa. I wanted to talk to you about preparing an exhibition of your gorgeous paintings at our place. Since we did not have other way to contact you, I got a float plane to fly me in.

I got here about noon, but you were out, of course. I sent the plane away. He is to pick me up tomorrow. I hope you don't mind my intrusion into your life, but I didn't know what else to do. I am anxious to expose your work to a broad audience that our Art Gallery can offer. Your work is so intense and evocative.

It reminds me of how similar to the Group of Seven your style is. I want everyone to see the comparison for themselves. Oh, my. I have rattled on too much. I guess I have given you too much to digest all at once. I tend to do that when I am excited.”

She paused to catch her breath, and let him say something.

Once he digested what she just said, he shrugged and replied: “I see. Thank you for the compliment. I admit that I am influ-

enced by them, but I do put my own technique into my painting.

I'm sorry, Laura. You caught me off guard. Come on. Let's go over to the table, and give me a chance to fully digest what you have just said.”

They sat at the table, and began talking. She was surprised how easy it was to talk to him. He wasn't one of those moody temperamental painters that she had to deal with in her line of work.

He was just a normal guy, with typical male interests. He wasn't afraid to show off his paintings either. He eagerly showed her each one that he had piled by the window, and she had already peeked at. He described the location, time of day, and anything else he thought important in the explanation of each painting. She was captivated by this eagerness.

He later made supper, as she sipped on a mug of homemade wine. She didn't care by then that there was no fancy wine glass to sip her wine. After supper, she was surprised when he got out his guitar from the bedroom, and sang a variety of songs to her. Some were his own compositions, he told her. Eventually she joined him in belting out songs that they both knew. Well, one thing lead to another, and it turned into a cozy time of food, wine, and song – and a night of passion!

By the next day when the plane returned, he had packed up and flew out with her. He had his portfolio wrapped up in a blanket and secured with tie downs.

They got back to Ottawa two days later. He moved in with her.

She prepared for the exhibit.

The gala was planned for the Friday night, and the grand opening on Saturday evening. It all went well.

There was a fantastic turnout for the weekend. Rave reviews appeared in the major art magazines all over the world. Laura was so relieved that it had all worked out. The Board also expressed delight on her success.

A particular art dealer from China was also impressed with Tyler's work. He made arrangements to have the paintings 'transferred' to his collection, housed in his Shanghai palace.

On the Sunday after the gala on Friday night there was a break in at the art gallery. Tyler's collection was taken down off the walls, and transferred to a waiting cube van at the back door.

They were quickly loaded in, and in a matter of minutes, it was gone with the paintings.

The theft was discovered on Monday morning when Laura got to work. For a change, she came in early that morning. For some strange reason, she just had this urge on Sunday night while in bed with Arthur that she needed to get there urgently. She couldn't believe her eyes when she saw the bare walls where his beautiful paintings had hung last Friday night. She panicked, and ran to her office. She punched up the surveillance camera tapes.

To no surprise, they showed nothing except black paint being sprayed at the lenses. With her hands shaking, she reluctantly called the Board chair, Ferris Varley, and then the police.

Before long, there was quite the commotion in the gallery as clues were looked for and interviews of staff conducted.

stormed into Laura's office, and demanded that the Detective, Frank Carmichaelson, who was busy interviewing her, charge her with the theft. In his bluster, he blathered. “I am sure she arranged this. Once these paintings are recovered, the price for them will skyrocket. Her new boyfriend, this Arthur Tyler, would make a fortune with any future sales he makes. I bet they collaborated on this together.”

Carmichaelson made a note about the Gallery also gaining a financial benefit if and when the paintings would be recovered and returned here.

He thanked him for the information, and told him it would be part of the investigation. MacDonald nodded, and turned and walked away. Laura was dumbfounded at this outrageous accusation, and felt like crying. But she controlled herself and went back to answering his questions.

It's amazing how such accusations can take on a life of their own. It wasn't long before everyone in the arts community was talking of her guilt, without any proof. Even Arthur appeared to believe them. He moved out and disappeared from Ottawa.

Everyone assumed he retreated to his cabin in the woods up in Northern Ontario.

But that was not the case. He turned up on the docks of Vancouver about a week after the theft, along with the port authorities, as a container was on the verge of being loaded onto a freighter bound for Shanghai.

Upon inspection, Tyler's paintings were discovered. It turned out that he had cleverly implanted a microchip in each painting deep inside the paint down by his initials, with a tracking device that was connected with his GPS system.( A little more tech savvy that Laura realized, eh!) He was able to turn it on, and follow the path of his paintings. This was unbeknownst to anyone at the gallery.

That same day a man by the name of Andy Lismertin was arrested for being an accomplice in the theft after his fingerprints on an aerosol can of black paint were found in a garbage bin out at the back of the gallery. The fingerprint ID system brought up his name. After some intense interrogation by the police, he confessed and gave up the names of the rest of the gang, as well as the ringleader, the blustery Mr. Jonathan H. E. MacDonald.

He was arrested that evening for being an accomplice in the theft.

He soon confessed and gave up the name of the dealer in China that had paid him to get those paintings.

Two days after that, Tyler miraculously re-appeared at the gallery, and strode into Laura's office as she was packing up her belongings, after being fired the previous day. Three days after that she was re-instated as Curator, and the same day she was married to A.R.T. The following week, the paintings were back hanging in the gallery.... (*Group of Seven members were: Lawren Harris, J. E. H. MacDonald, Frederick Varley, A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Frank Johnston (who left in 1921 and replaced by A.J. Casson), and Franklin Carmichael. Another well known painter of this era was Tom Thomson, but he was not a member of this group. J.W.)

NOTICE MARINA REPAIR UPDATE

Please note a change in the repair schedule at the Harry McCluskie Municipal Marina. Due to favorable circumstances, the repairs to slips 1 through 3 have been completed faster than anticipated. As such, the Municipality has opened these slips effective immediately.

There will also be further repairs to a concrete base on slip 2 as well as the water and power hookups on slips 1 and 2. These repairs will be completed intermittently over the month of September, with all repairs to slips 1 and 2 completed by October 1st.

The Wawa Green Project enjoyed a successful weekend at the Annual Blueberry Fall Festival. Our table was situated in the “Energy Hub” which included Algoma Power Inc., Algoma Energy Solutions and Buywise Consulting. The Green Project was joined by Kieran O’Neill of Buywise Consulting, who booked 5 energy audits over the weekend. Kieran helps to audit how energy efficient your home is and can give you up to $5000 in rebates off of high energy upgrades.

Visitors to the Green Project table were pleased with the opportunity to get free toilet tank banks to save water, a chance to win an energy savings gift basket, a chance to win a composter, and free yard waste bags.

The yard bags were surprisingly popular, since the program began, we’ve given away 675 bags to help divert yard waste from our landfill and instead turn it into compost!

The Green Project also demonstrated the Heat Gun and many patrons were looking forward to their opportunity to rent it to learn where heat may be escaping their homes.

Now for the moment that everyone who entered our draws are waiting for. From the 93 total draw entries that we received, the winner of the energy savings gift basket is Maryanne Mitrikas, while the winner of the composter is Emma Desgagne!

Congratulations to both of you, the Green Project knows that you will put your winnings to good use.
