Bumps, Babies And Beyond Expo - Something For Everyone!

On Saturday, September 8th, at the Wawa Community Center from 10-3pm, over 45 exhibitors will be set up to greet attendees at the first annual Bumps, Babies and BEYOND expo! Touted as the biggest exposition to hit the north shore, this FREE event has something for everyone - from young to well seasoned.

Everyone is invited to come SHOP. LEARN. PLAY. The expo will showcase the finest local businesses and service providers that cater to families and individuals from Wawa and the surrounding areas.

Exhibitors ranging from storefront and home-based business, to handmade vendors, clubs and community service agencies will be in attendance.

Stores and vendors from SSM and abroad will be making the trip to Wawa to diversify the wares, making this event a huge one-stop-shop.

For Children of all ages there will be activities such as face painting, a dress-up

photo booth and an activity center. We are also very excited to announce that thanks to our sponsors Northside Toyota, Once Upon A Child and Family Dentistry on Bay, the event will also host a large bouncy playland for younger children and a large bouncy obstacle course for older children.

As shown WAWA TS on the map, the reference route generally parallels Hydro One’s existing East-West Tie transmission corridor with the exception of a new section of corridor creating a bypass near Dorion and a section through Pukaskwa National Park where existing infrastructure would be modified. Preliminary alternative route sections have been identified around Pukaskwa National Park and along the existing transmission corridor through the Township of Dorion. The targeted in-service date is the end of 2021.

Project Purpose The Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) Updated Assessment of the Need for the East-West Tie Expansion, 2017 states that a new transmission line “…continues to be the recommended alternative to maintaining a reliable and cost-effective supply of electricity in Northwestern Ontario for the long term.”

The Planning Process The preparation of a ToR is the first step in the EA process. The ToR sets out the work plan Hydro One will follow to address the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. If approved by the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the ToR will provide the framework for the second step of the process, the preparation of the EA. Important elements of the EA will be to evaluate route alternatives, assess potential effects and determine measures to avoid or mitigate these effects.

Review of the Terms of Reference Indigenous communities, government agencies, members of the public and other interested persons are encouraged to actively participate in the review of the ToR. The ToR will be available for a 30-day review and comment period from September 7, 2018 until October 7, 2018. Labour Day is upon us marking the end of school vacations and the inevitable turn towards autumn. While it is easy to focus on the day as a holiday, it is also important to remember that it celebrates numerous campaigns that helped shape our modern workplaces in many significant ways.

Those are marked by Labour Day Parades and festivities held in many communities over the long weekend. The celebrations remind us of the history of Labour Day when workers fought for better wages and working conditions and how those struggles continue to this day. When we celebrate this we are remembering important victories like the 5-day work week, health and safety measures and rights, and fair wages while recognizing there are always new challenges that arise for the movement and perennial issues that remain unresolved.

The recent difficulties negotiating a renewed NAFTA and the negative effects of subsequent trade wars are good examples of how issues can arise unexpectedly. While steel and aluminum Ptariffs set AN the problem in motion, the dispute has spread to other

sectors and threatens jobs on both sides of the border. If left unresolved, it could further interrupt supply chains and spread to other sectors.

This is testing Canada’s ability to help maintain these vital sectors while new markets are sought to ensure any layoffs are only temporary.

In addition to new challenges there are some that have been more difficult to address and remain important to labour such as pay equity. This is a perennial issue that is unfair and only holds Canada back from a more vibrant economy.

Despite significant workplace gains, women are still underpaid as a whole. While it may be tempting to think this is more of a problem for other countries, Canadian women only earn an average of 72 cents for every dollar earned by men.

Unions are also champions of social issues and use their collective voices to support campaigns on this front.

This year the Canadian Labour Congress has publicly called for an extension to the public inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, full public Pharmacare, and for Canada to offer sanctuary for

refugees that are being failed by the American system.

Despite the labour movement’s significant contributions to society, it constantly has to defend itself against politicians that are opposed to collective rights. In recent years many American states have adopted ‘right to work legislation’ that weakens unions and make it far more difficult for workers to organize. So far Canada has been spared this development, but the threat of moving towards this type of regime is always present since some of the trends we witness in the United States make their way to Canada.

Without unions who knows how far we would have advanced. They have played a leading role in improving our standard of living and working conditions for all workers and continue to do so to this day.

That is why it is important that we set aside a day to celebrate this legacy as well as the work being done to address the changing nature of our modern workforce.

With the help of a determined cop, she uncovers the ad's twisted purpose...a discovery that turns her paranoia into full-blown panic. For now Zoe is sure that someone close to her has set her up as the next target.

And now that man on the train—the one smiling at Zoe from across the car—could be more than just a friendly stranger. He could be someone who has deliberately chosen her and is ready to make his next move…

and he never went over like he promised.” She sighed before taking a deep breath and continuing. “I'll be in touch. I am taking my brother Malcolm with me for backup, just in case.”

Mabel tried to calm her down by saying, “That's good.

I was going to suggest going to their house too. So you are way ahead of me. You're getting the hang of this sleuth stuff, I must say. Say hi to Malcolm for me. Keep me posted.” She agreed to do that, and hung up. Mabel was so busy the rest of that morning, and into the afternoon with all the administrative paperwork that needed to be completed during this first day of school opening, that she never gave her any more thought. She was taken aback when Hazel called her about three that afternoon.

“Hi, there. I just wanted to let you know what has happened since we last talked earlier today. You're not going to believe it. It's like a story out of a true crime novel. They were kidnapped in their own house. A gang of four thugs broke in a week ago Friday night around six p.m., not realizing they were still there.

This happened just ten minutes before they were ready to head out to the airport.

They were tied up and locked in the laundry room while those guys took over the rest of the house. They ate all their food, watched TV, and used the Pay On Demand a lot, played their video games, and racked up some huge bills on Ben's debit card. They also hacked into their computer, and did a lot of online shopping.

Anyway, Malcolm and I let ourselves into the house, and what did we discover but one of the bast...., uh, crooks, intently watching TV. I think it was one of those soaps. I didn't really pay attention which one it was. Anyway he had his back to us as he sat in Ben's lounge chair. We really startled him when we called out to him, asking what he was doing there. He jumped out of the chair, and looked startled, like a child who is suddenly caught with his hand in the cookie jar, if you know what I mean. Before we could stop him, he ran towards the front door, and was out of there in a flash. Malcolm tried to catch him, but he was too fast. Well, we called the police before searching the house, just to see if they were there. Sure enough, when we went down to the basement, we called out their names to see if they were there. Then we heard the banging on the door. When we opened it, I don't who was more relieved- them or us. Ben was standing on top of the washer, trying to pry open the window so he could get out and escape. It was Barbara who was pounding on the door.

Ben explained the situation, They were treated okay, as they brought them food once a day, and let them go to the bathroom. He said they tried to escape the one time by running

The Missing Student Mystery It is Tuesday, Sept. 4th, 2018 and the first day of classes at the Delray P. Schuter High School in the town of Wawaton. There is a student population of about 75 this year, according to the enrollment list. However, after attendance was taken on this first day, it was discovered that one student appeared to be missing. Of course this is not too unusual. Sometimes they were on holidays with their parents, and couldn't get back on time, especially if flying.

Sometimes it was having to work that day at their summer job. Sometimes it was being sick. The secretary, Mabel Simpson, has heard all the excuses over the years she has been at this school. But this was going to be her last year at the school, as she was turning 65 next May. This time it was a new reason that involved a mystery of a student who had disappeared, along with her parents, a week previously.

It began when she learned of this missing student, Barbara Franklin, from her homeroom teacher. As always the first thing she did was phone the parents, in this case, Ben and Susan Franklin, to see what might have happened. There was no answer. But the voice mail did offer a clue. It stated that they were on vacation, and wished everyone an enjoyable Labour Day weekend.

She thought to herself, “Well, thanks for that. I am sure burglars would be appreciative of that info too. An empty house ripe for the picking. Why won't people learn?” She shook her head in disapproval. Then she continued to get on with business.

She checked the school records, and got the name of the company that Mr. Franklin worked for. She called them, and was worried when she learned that he had not returned to work today, as he was supposed to.

Fortunately, Wawaton was a small enough town that people knew each other directly or indirectly, or were related, or through a friend of a friend.

Mabel knew Mr. Franklin's mother Hazel, through the church that they were both members of as well as they both went to the same exercise class every Monday and Wednesday evenings. So she called her up to see if she knew anything about where they were or when they might be back. She was in a panic, as she had not heard from them either. They had gone a week ago to New York to watch the U.S. Open tennis tournament, as the whole family enjoyed tennis. Nearly every weekend at home they were playing it with friends. They even had a court in their backyard.

They were due back late on Labour Day Monday evening,

she explained to Mabel. He always called her as soon as they got back home from wherever they went. But because they were going to be getting in late, Ben had told her that he would call Tuesday morning early instead. He knew she was such a worrier. That was why she never checked in with them. Mabel suggested that they maybe were delayed at the airport due to mechanical difficulties or any number of reasons.. She reminded Hazel that it was a regular occurrence anymore. Then she suggested getting the phone number of where they were staying in New York, and call her back.

That calmed her down, as she now had a mission to focus her attention on. After a long while, she finally did call Mabel back. Hazel was out of breathe as she spoke. “Sorry to take so long. I knew that I had the number somewhere, but do you think that I could remember where? Anyway I have it here. I'll give them a call, and then call you back, if that's okay, Mabel.”

She replied, “Sure. You do that. I have some more calls to make, and lots of other things to get done today. Thanks a lot.” She hung up and went on with her other tasks.

Not even ten minutes later, she got a hysterical call from Hazel. “They don't have any record of them arriving at the hotel. Oh, my, what happened to them? Have they been in an accident? What if they are laying in a ditch somewhere between the airport and home?

Have they been murdered?

Where can they be?” Mabel interrupted her. “Hazel, calm down. I presume they flew out from Torrino, right? Check with the airline, and see if they got on the plane. Once we know that, we can go on from there. Call me back.”

She hung up and did as she was told. This time it took a lot longer before she called Mabel back. This time she was annoyed.. She declared, “Well, try getting in touch with a human being with those airlines! I was on hold for a good twenty minutes. Then it took another fifteen minutes or so for the check in clerk to get back to me. She confirmed that they did not check in as scheduled. So now that we know that much, I am going to go over to their house and see if there are any clues there as to where they might be.

Oh, God. I hope they are not all dead there, and have been there all week. Maybe they were injured or something, and laying on the floor, helpless to get up. Maybe carbon monoxide poisoning? I should have gone over and been checking the house myself every day.

But Ben said his neighbour next door was supposed to be checking it for them. I'll kill him if I find them dead,

up the stairs as they headed to the basement bathroom. But just as they got to the top of the stairs, one of the thugs was standing there with a butcher knife in his hand. He forced them all back downstairs and back to the laundry room.

They lost that bathroom break, so it was excruciating while they waited for the next time.

Anyway, it just happened this time Ben was not tied tightly enough, and was able to get himself untied. He got the rest free. That is when we came in, as they were trying to escape through the window.

Ben expected that the other three must have gone out for now, but would likely be back soon, so we should get out of there before they did return.

Unfortunately just as we were at the top of the stairs to the kitchen, the three of them did come back. Well, Malcolm was not going to let those three get away, or allow all of us to become hostages. He grabbed the butcher knife that was on the counter by the sink, and told them to sit down.

Ben picked up on this, and he grabbed a steak knife from the drawer. Thankfully those three thugs realized they were outnumbered this time, five to three. I grabbed the proverbial frying pan, and Barbara wielded a broom handle. Susan got scissors out.

Thankfully they put up no resistance. We got them to sit down at the kitchen table, and we talked to them while we waited for the cops to show up.

They were very forthcoming, despite being high on drugs.

They explained about living on the streets for the past six months. They were all into drugs and alcohol, and needed money to satisfy their cravings. They made the rounds of houses and corner stores to get food, and money to buy their drugs and booze. Ben and Susan's house just happened to be their next target. They were just in their early twenties, I would say. Once they were inside the house they realized they had all the time in the world to get a taste of the 'good life', as they described it – living in a nice home, with lots of money to spend thanks to Ben's debit card; that he had carelessly left by the phone and the computer access. They described about ordering all kinds of things, using his card.

I don't know what else they did. I gather they had lots of other homeless people that they hung out with, in over this time, partying and taking drugs, and god knows what else that goes on at parties nowadays! I can't understand why some of the neighbours didn't call the police to complain, especially their neighbour who was supposed to be keeping an eye on the house for them. Wait til I talk to him. I am going to give him a piece of my mind!

Anyway, they have been taken away now, and Ben, Susan and Barbara have gone down to the police station to make a statement before charges are laid. I have been busy cleaning up the house. They

have sure made a mess. Dirty dishes everywhere, the beds all need to be stripped and washed. Oh my!”

Mabel interrupted her. “Are you sure that you should be doing that? Isn't it a crime scene now? You could be erasing fingerprints, or DNA samples, or whatever they might need for evidence at a future trial.” Hazel paused while she thought about that. “Oh, gosh, maybe you are right. They never said anything about leaving things intact. Oh, oh!

Hope I haven't wrecked things.

Guess I will leave the rest of the cleanup for later. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Well, anyway, the mystery is solved, so I will let you get back to work. Barbara will likely be at school tomorrow.

She might need counseling, although she's a strong girl, just like her Dad. I am just thankful that those intruders didn't harm them. I hope the news media don't find out about this, and make a huge deal of it. I think they would just like to forget about it, and get back to their normal routines.”

Mabel commented, “Good luck with that. I am sure it will likely make the six o'clock news tonight, or else by tomorrow morning's news on TV. Likely Twitter and Facebook are abuzz already.” Hazel sighed, and admitted that she was likely correct.

Sure enough, it was on tonight's the TV news channels. They caught the first guy that ran away, at the bus stop, while the others were arrested at the Franklin residence, the reports said.

One thing that Hazel didn't know at the time when she was telling Mabel all about it earlier that afternoon, was that the intruders were really drug dealers that Barbara's boyfriend, Josh Wheeler used to buy his fix. He was behind in his payments, and he thought this house raid would help erase that debt. They agreed to that arrangement. He had told them that they were going to be away, but thought they would have checked it out first to make sure the house was empty before they broke in. So Josh ended up being charged as an accomplice. He had been at the house several times during that week, it was also learned. So he had a good chance to get the layout of the house and where the TV, computers, etc. were located.

It was also learned that the four intruders laughed during their interrogation about how gullible the Franklin family was, falling for the sob story of being these poor homeless people.

Mabel went to bed that night thinking how lucky the family was that it all worked out.

She began to imagine what could have happened leading to a much more terrible result.

Then she couldn't stop smiling as she imagined Hazel standing there with that fry pan, waving it over her head. That would give anyone pause to tangle with her. Don't mess with those seniors, she stated out load to no one, as she

Story Time Continued..... settled in to bed. And finally as she drifted off to sleep, her last thought was a question – “I wonder if Barbara will really be at school tomorrow? She'll be a celebrity for sure. Will she want that attention? Must line up the school therapist just in case. Hmm, I better follow up on that in the morning.”

Fortunately Barbara was too angry to be traumatized.

She was just too pissed off after learning that Josh was the ringleader of this home invasion. At least that is how it stands this Tuesday night.

However in the morning, it is hard to say what frame of mind she will be in. Will she be able to face going to school? Or is she strong enough to shrug off this ordeal, and move on? We will know soon enough...

It is now Wednesday and Barbara came striding into school that morning. She was immediately surrounded by her friends and other students who happened to be in the hall at the time of her grand entrance.

They all talked at once, trying to find out what happened and how was she. Mabel just happened to be coming out of the office, and spotted the crowd at the other end of the hall. She worked her way down towards Barbara and the crowd. As she got closer, she heard Barbara playing the sob story of how traumatic her imprisonment was for her, and whipping up sympathy from them. Mabel nodded inwardly to herself, thinking how conniving this girl was turning out to be.

She remembered how nice she was in Grade nine. She also realized Barbara would not be needing any counseling. She

had survived the ordeal just fine. She was going to milk it as far and as long as it proved helpful to her.

Although the initial mystery of the missing student had been solved, it became another mystery to Mabel whether she was just putting on a front, or was she really not handling the situation very well. Time would tell, she knew.

And she was right. Indeed that Tuesday night at home was traumatic for the whole family.

For Barbara the thought of Josh and the others being in their house, and likely checking out her bedroom terrified her and she refused to even go into it. As she told her mother, what if they found and read her diary, as she had left it at home in her usual hiding place in the bottom drawer of the dresser.

There was no way her mother could ease her mind. So her mother made up the spare bedroom for her.

When Susan told Ben, he shook his head in despair, and wondered what to do. For everyone, it will take time to see what develops with Barbara after this home invasion. And we should be wondering about them too. Will Susan be comfortable going back into the laundry room where they were held captive? Will Ben take out his anger in some kind of violent fashion? It will be up to him to resolve the financial damage the intruders had racked up, with all the false charges on his debit card. All these things will be showing up eventually.. How will they all cope?

Never leave garbage behind. If you must leave before garbage day, or if you do not have curbside collection, take your garbage with you when you go. Take it to an approved waste disposal site.

Fill bird feeders only through the winter months.

Never feed bears (or other wildlife) or try to approach them.

Put garbage in containers that have tight-fitting lids, and only put it out on garbage day, not the night before.

Store garbage in a bear-resistant container, secure shed or garage. Do not store garbage in plywood boxes, old freezers or vehicles.

Do not stockpile garbage. Take it to an approved waste disposal site regularly.

Keep meat scraps in the freezer until garbage day.

Remove grease and food residue from barbecue grills, including the grease trap, after each use.

Do not put meat, fish or sweet food (including fruit) in your composter.

Pick all ripe fruit off trees, and remove vegetables and fallen fruit from the ground.

Encourage your neighbours to practise Bear Wise habits.

If you rent your cottage, tell your tenants the importance of being Bear Wise, and make these tips available.

You are responsible for your own personal safety. Take precautions when you are outdoors.

Article By Jenelle McAuley, RD With summer coming to an end and school starting, so is the afterschool routine. With this comes dinner time, some parents most dreaded time of the day. If the dinner table has become a battle ground it’s time to throw in the towel and try a new approach-one that may shock your children. Let them eat what they want in whatever quantity they want.

As parents, you control the “what” they eat, they control the “how much”. No longer will you force, bargain, or bribe them to eat what is on their plate. When there is no longer pressure, there will no longer be rebellion. It may take some time for your child

to trust that you will not go back on your word, but once they realize this new eating routine is here to stay, they learn they are in control, which is ultimately what the rebellion was all about-gaining control.

Prepare balanced meals that have food items you know they like-but remember you are not a short order cook, especially if you have more than one picky eater in the house. Educate children in the importance of eating so they can run and play; also educate them on listening to their body.

Encourage them to stop eating when they are full and to ask for a snack when they are hungry. Teach them to trust their

body. Some days they will eat more than other, they may also stop eating foods they previously liked. Let them experiment on their own. This is their way of building confidents and control, support them.

Change the language from “good”, “bad” , or “junk” food. There is no food that is no longer forbidden or limited.

At first, you child may over indulge; however once they again learn you are sticking to your word, the monotony will wear off. Because the food is always available, they will not feel the need to overeat or sneak foods that were previously limited. Adopting this philosophy of eating may be

stressful on a parent when they see their child eat more dessert than their meal, stay the course. Also, do not look at meals in isolation, consider everything you child has eaten over the week; they will get all the nutrition they need.

Finally remember the age old saying, monkey see monkey do. Children are like sponges that soak up everything around them, particularly the behaviours of their parents. Modeling behaviours that include eating a variety of foods, stopping when full, and not focusing on weight or body image will help your child grow to have a healthy relationship with food and their body.

These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5].
