Wawa Goose Seniors Club News - Goose Droppings Just a note at the end of summer: it is the first day of September as I write, with the first taste of frost on the roof across the street!

Thus we are reminded that the regular events of the fall are about to begin.

School, fall fair, skating, exercise classes of various kinds, hockey fund raisers, committee meetings for all those different

organizations which gear up as the temperature goes down will again require our attention and down to business approaches.

So too with the Wawa Goose Seniors’ Club: business gets under way almost now-now.

The Executive meets officially on September 11 and the General Meeting goes on Wednesday, September 13. As members we do

need to get ourselves out to help with the organization, so please do make that 2:00 p.m. meeting if at all possible. We do have major developments with the Back Room changes and the use of the building on the weekends to follow up.

Meetings of the various committees will also get under way in the Third week of September at the

On Saturday August 19th, 85 golfers were treated to a beautiful day on the course! With a shot gun start CHADWIC Home celebrated 10 years of golf!

This year was made extra special with the unveiling of a new trophy.

The new trophy was generously donated by Shawn and Wendy Blevins from Dynamic Roofing Inc. The trophy is a beautiful glass piece that will sit in the frontline office at the shelter, a quote engraved on the trophy says “She needed a hero, so that’s what she became” in very short form this quote represent s the many challenges and struggles we see women face on a daily basis in our community and abroad.

Dynamic Roofing has also supported our tournament by providing us with funds each year to purchase an outdoor furniture package.

Throughout the last ten years we have received so much support from the people and businesses in Wawa! Our first tournament was made possible thanks to Nick Alexopoulos from the North of 17 Restaurant; Nick covered

the cost of our green fees that first year and continued to do so many years later!

Thanks to Wesdome Gold Mine for covering the cost of our green fee’s this year!! When we are able to find support in these areas it ensures any funds raised can go towards programming and services to assist women and children fleeing abuse.

Northern Lights Ford has sponsored our tournament since 2008, each year they have provided us with a spectacular vehicle for a chance to win on a lucky shot! This year Northern Lights Ford also included a chance to win a golf getaway package on hole 3!

(WAWA, ON) - Inattentive driving is linked to more collisions on Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)patrolled roads so far this year than speeding and alcohol/drug-related collisions combined.

Since January 1, 2017, driver distraction has been reported as the primary cause in 6,360 road collisions. In contrast, speed was the primary cause in 4,700 crashes, while 1,158 of the incidents involved a driver who consumed alcohol or drugs.

How often have you heard someone say they are tired of politics, or that it is all the same and nothing ever changes? As we approach Labour Day we should remember that so many of the gains we enjoy were hard-fought for and would never have come about if people succumbed to those sentiments. While people may not consider the work undertaken by organized labour as being political, it really is. That’s because, in addition to localized workplace concerns such as bargaining on contracts, the labour movement contributes to our legislative agenda as well. Important concepts like work-place health and safety, maternity leave, and corporate responsibility are rooted in the political work led by organized labour.

In most instances, the victories of the labour movement have had an effect on all work-places.

Consider how the forty hour work week, child labour laws, and minimum wage are simply accepted norms. In their time, each of these was the product of hard work and even bitter, divisive struggles. But despite these gains that

rates have also declined in Canada over the same period of time and only 16% of our private workplaces remain unionized. While that number is slightly better than in America, we can expect the same effect on wages for non-unionized workplaces as has occurred south of the border. In addition to lower wages, more workers are getting by without pensions or benefit plans. This only places stress on our social safety net which ultimately cost us more as tax dollars are used to replace the wages, pensions, and benefits that could be the bed-rock of a stronger economy that works for more people.

That is why we must not give in to the notion that we are tired of politics.

It only serves the status quo without adding to the greater good. Instead, we can take inspiration from the work undertaken by organized labour that has made our workplaces better in so many ways and commit ourselves to similar struggles. That will make a difference for us and for future generations.

That is why it is important to celebrate our victories on Labour Day and remind ourselves that only hard work will create a better world.

The truth is that union participation is declining at the same time as income inequality is growing. There are academic studies that suggest the benefits of unionized pay structure extend well beyond union work places. Researchers at the University of Washington show that the biggest change would be for male workers without college degrees who would earn 9% more in non-unionized workplaces if union participation returned to 1979 rates. For those workers, unions have not outlived their usefulness.

As Canada celebrates 150 years, The Terry Fox Run proudly celebrates 37.

Toronto, Aug ust 31-Hundreds of thousands of people across Canada are expected to participate in the Annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 17th, a fund raising event taking place in over 700 communities nation-wide that continue to embody the indomitable spirit of Terry Fox. In a year where we have enjoyed celebrating our country's 150th birthday, it's been great to hear so

many Canadians say that participating in the Terry Fox Run in an important part of the celebration says Terry's older brother Fred Fox. Terry was just 18 when he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his right leg. He was in his first year at Simon Fraser University studying kinesiology when he felt the pain in his knee.

He had his leg amputated six inches above the knee and endured aggressive chemotherapy to eliminate remaining cancer cells.

that two thirds of cancer victims died of the disease. Instead of crushing his spirits, the sight of other patients suffering made him stronger and more compassionate.

It was from this strength and compassion that the Marathon of Hope was born.

Since Terry ran in 1980, Canadians have raised over $750 million for cancer research. This money is invested into projects with the greatest potential impact for patients. One such project is Multiple Myeloma Molecular Monitoring, underway in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal.

A team of researchers will work with more than 250 patients across Canada to advance the ability to characterize and monitor multiple myeloma in the blood and the bone marrow to better understand how current treatments work and develop new, more effective ones.

On Sunday, September 17th, hundreds of thousands of Terry Fox supporters, family and friends, will participate in a favorite Fall tradition to ensure that cancer research continues to make a difference. From coast to coast, Canadians will be celebrating the power of the human spirit.

Northern Ontario Party is Ontario Curbing Abuse of Looking For Candidates Unlawful Evictions The Northern Ontario Party will be busy over the next month with a Leadership tour across the North and several information sessions being hosted by the Riding Associations.

Also the NOP and its members will finish filling vacant executive board positions through an election process that will occur by mid- September.

During the month of September, the NOP is putting out the call for all prospects who want to entertain the opportunity to run as a party candidate in next year’s election. The party is taking on this undertaking now as we have big plans that will be occurring in the near future and we would like to have all key members in place to see these plans come to fruition .

Trevor Holliday, states this is an official NOP CALL FOR CANDIDATES. We need people who love the North, and who Will represent and are committed to ensuring they are for their constituents and Northern Ontario first and foremost.

The Ridings, the NOP are actively searching for candidates are: Kenora – Rainy River ,Kiiwetinoong, Mushkegowuk, Nickel Belt, Parry Sound – Muskoka, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay – Atikokan ,Thunder Bay – Superior North and Timmins.

Update on Missing Alberta Male Male Located

26, 2017. SAVOIE has since been in contact with police WAWA, ON - The Superior and is no longer considered East Detachment of the missing.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) had been seeking the assistance of the public in locating a male from Grand Prairie, Alberta.

Province Delivering Stronger Protections for Tenants

The province is increasing security and peace of mind for renters by placing new requirements on the circumstances in which landlords can evict tenants.

Effective September 1, 2017, when a landlord ends a tenancy so that they or a family member can use a rental unit, landlords must: •Provide one month's rent to the tenant as compensation or offer the tenant another acceptable rental unit.

•Express intent to occupy the unit for at least one year. If the landlord advertises, re-rents or demolishes/converts the unit within one year, she or he will be considered to have acted in bad faith unless they can prove otherwise, and could face a fine of up to $25,000.

The new measures will help protect tenants by discouraging landlords from unlawfully evicting them, whether for conversion of the unit into a short-term

rental or immediately rerenting it at a higher rate.

These changes build on other protections for tenants under the Fair Housing Plan such as the expansion of rent control to all private rental units, including those first occupied on or after November 1, 1991.

Making rental housing fairer and more accessible for tenants is part of Ontario's plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

•Under the changes, only individual landlords, not corporations, can end tenancies under the ‘landlord’s own use’ provision.

•It is an offence under the Residential Tenancies Act for a landlord to knowingly end a tenancy by giving notice in bad faith. A conviction for this offence can result in a fine of up to $25,000 for an individual.

•There are approximately 1.2 million private rental households in Ontario.

The Missing Student Mystery It is Tuesday, Sept. 5th, 2017 and the first day of classes at the Delray P. Schuter High School in the town of Wawaton.

There is a student population of about 75 this year, according to the enrollment list.

However, after attendance was taken on this first day, it was discovered that one student appeared to be missing. Of course this is not too unusual.

Sometimes they were on holidays with their parents, and couldn't get back on time, especially if flying. Sometimes it was having to work that day at their summer job. Sometimes it was being sick. The secretary, Mabel Simpson, has heard all the excuses over the years. But this was going to be her last year at the school, as she was turning 65 next May. This time it was a new reason that involved a mystery of a student who had disappeared, along with her parents, a week previously.

It began when she learned of this missing student, Barbara Franklin, from her homeroom teacher. As always the first thing she did was phone the parents, in this case, Ben and Susan Franklin, to see what might have happened. There was no answer. But the voice mail did offer a clue. It stated that they were on vacation, and wished everyone an enjoyable Labour Day weekend.

She thought to herself, “Well, thanks for that. I am sure burglars would be appreciative of that info too. An empty house ripe for the picking. Why won't people learn?” She shook her head in disapproval. Then she continued to get on with business.

She checked the school records, and got the name of the company that Mr. Franklin worked for. She called them, and was worried when she learned that he had not returned to work today, as he was supposed to.

Fortunately, Wawaton was a small enough town that people knew each other directly or indirectly, or were related, or through a friend of a friend.

Mabel knew Mr. Franklin's mother Hazel, through the church that they were both members of. So she called her up to see if she knew anything about where they were or when they might be back.

She was in a panic, as she had not heard from them either.

They had gone a week ago to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and were due back late on Labour Day Monday evening, she explained to Mabel.

He always called her as soon as they got back home from wherever they went. But because they were going to be getting in late, Ben had told her that he would call Tuesday morning early instead. He knew she was such a worrier. That was

why she never checked in with them. Now she was more than that. Mabel suggested that they maybe were delayed at the airport or somewhere due to the hurricane that had hit Florida on the long weekend.

Then she suggested getting the phone number of where they were staying in Orlando, and call her back. That calmed her down, as she now had a mission to focus her attention on.

After a long while, she finally did call Mabel back.

Hazel was out of breathe as she spoke. “Sorry to take so long. I knew that I had the number somewhere, but do you think that I could remember where? Anyway I have it here. I'll give them a call, and then call you back, if that's okay, Mabel.” She replied, “Sure. You do that. I have some more calls to make, and lots of other things to get done today.

Thanks a lot.” She hung up and went on with her other tasks.

Not even ten minutes later, she got a hysterical call from Hazel. “They don't have any record of them arriving at the hotel. Oh, my, what happened to them? Have they been in an accident? What if they are laying in a ditch somewhere? Have they been murdered? Where can they be?”” Mabel interrupted her. “Hazel, calm down. I presume they flew out from Torrino, right? Check with the airline, and see if they got on the plane. Once we know that, we can go on from there. Call me back.” Hazel hung up and did as she was told. This time it took nearly half an hour before she called Mabel back. This time she was annoyed.. She declared, “Well, try getting in touch with a human being with those airlines! I was on hold for a good twenty minutes. Then it took another fifteen minutes or so for the check in clerk to get back to me. She confirmed that they did not check in as scheduled. So now that we know that much, I am going to go over to their house and see if there are any clues there as to where they might be. Oh, God. I hope they are not all dead there, and have been there all week. Maybe they were injured or something, and laying on the floor, helpless to get up. I should have gone over and been checking the house myself every day. But Ben said his neighbour next door was supposed to be checking it for them. I'll kill him if I found them dead, and he never went over like he promised.” She signed before taking a deep breath and continuing. “I'll be in touch. I am taking my brother Malcolm with me for backup, just in case.”

Mabel tried to calm her down by saying, “That's good.

I was going to suggest going to their house too. So you are way ahead of me. You're getting

the hang of this sleuth stuff, I must say. Say hi to Malcolm for me. Keep me posted.” She agreed to do that, and hung up. Mabel was so busy the rest of that morning, and into the afternoon with all the administrative paperwork that needed to be completed during this first day of school opening, that she never gave her any more thought. She was taken aback when Hazel called her about three that afternoon.

“Hi, there. I just wanted to let you know what has happened since we last talked earlier today. You're not going to believe it. It's like a story out of a true crime novel. They were kidnapped in their own house.

A gang of four thugs broke in a week ago Friday night around six p.m., not realizing they were still there. This happened just ten minutes before they were ready to head out to the airport.

They were tied up and locked in the laundry room while those guys took over the rest of the house. They ate all their food, watched TV, and used the Pay On Demand a lot, played their video games, and racked up some huge bills on Ben's debit card. They also hacked into their computer, and did a lot of online shopping.

Anyway, Malcolm and I let ourselves into the house, and what did we discover but one of the bast...., uh, crooks, intently watching TV. I think it was one of those soaps. I didn't really pay attention which one it was. Anyway he had his back to us as he sat in Ben's lounge chair. We really startled him when we called out to him, asking what he was doing there.

He jumped out of the chair, and looked startled, like a child who is suddenly caught with his hand in the cookie jar, if you know what I mean. Before we could stop him, he ran towards the front door, and was out of there in a flash. Malcolm tried to catch him, but he was too fast. Well, we called the police before searching the house, just to see if they were there. Sure enough, when we went down to the basement, we called out their names to see if they were there. Then we heard the banging on the door. When we opened it, I don't who was more relieved- them or us.

Ben was standing on top of the washer, trying to pry open the window so he could get out and escape. It was Barbara who was pounding on the door.

Ben explained the situation, They were treated okay, as they brought them food once a day, and let them go to the bathroom. He said they tried to escape the one time by running up the stairs as they headed to the basement bathroom. But just as they got to the top of the stairs, one of the thugs was standing there with a butcher knife in his hand. He forced them all back downstairs and back to the laundry room.

They lost that bathroom break, so it was excruciating while they waited for the next time.

Anyway, it just happened this time Ben was not tied tightly enough, and was able to get

himself untied. He got the rest free. That is when we came in, as they were trying to escape through the window.

Ben expected that the other three must have gone out for now, but would likely be back soon, so we should get out of there before they did return.

Unfortunately just as we were at the top of the stairs to the kitchen, the three of them did come back. Well, Malcolm was not going to let those three get away, or allow all of us to become hostages. He grabbed a butcher knife that was on the counter by the sink, and told them to sit down. Ben picked up on this, and he grabbed a steak knife from the drawer.

Thankfully those three thugs realized they were outnumbered this time, five to three. I grabbed the proverbial frying pan, and Barbara wielded a broom handle. Susan got scissors out.

Thankfully they put up no resistance. We got them to sit down at the kitchen table, and we talked to them while we waited for the cops to show up.

They were very forthcoming, despite being high on drugs.

They explained about living on the streets for the past six months. They were all into drugs and alcohol, and needed money to satisfy their cravings. They made the rounds of houses and corner stores to get food, and money to bury their drugs and booze. Ben and Susan's house just happened to be their next target. They were just in their early twenties, I would say. Once they were inside the house they realized they had all the time in the world to get a taste of the 'good life', as they described it – living in a nice home, with lots of money to spend thanks to Ben's debit card; that he had carelessly left by the phone and the computer access. They described about ordering all kinds of things, using his card.

I don't know what else they did.

I gather they had lots of other homeless people that they hung out with, in over this time, partying and taking drugs, and god knows what else that goes on at parties nowadays! I can't understand why some of the neighbours didn't call the police to complain, especially their neighbour who was supposed to be keeping an eye on the house for them.

Anyway, they have been taken away now, and Ben, Susan and Barbara have gone down to the police station to make a statement before charges are laid. I have been busy cleaning up the house.

They have sure made a mess.

Dirty dishes everywhere, the beds all need to be stripped and washed. Oh my!”Mabel interrupted her. “Are you sure that you should be doing that?

Isn't it a crime scene now? You could be erasing fingerprints, or DNA samples, or whatever they might need for evidence at a future trial.” Hazel paused while she thought about that.

“Oh, gosh, maybe you are right.

They never said anything about leaving things intact. Oh, oh!

Well, anyway, the mystery is solved, so I will let you get back to work. Barbara will likely be at school tomorrow. She might need counseling, although she's a strong girl, just like her Dad. I am just thankful that those intruders didn't harm them.

I hope the news media don't find out about this, and make a huge deal of it. I think they would just like to forget about it, and get back to their normal routines.”

Mabel commented, “Good luck with that. I am sure it will likely make the six o'clock news tonight, or else by tomorrow morning's news. Likely Twitter is abuzz already.” Hazel sighed, and admitted that she was likely correct.

Sure enough, it was on tonight's news. They caught the first guy that ran away, at the bus stop, while the others were arrested at the Franklin residence, the reports said.

One thing that Hazel didn't know at the time when she was telling Mabel all about it earlier that afternoon, was that the intruders were really drug dealers that Barbara's boyfriend, Josh Wheeler used to buy his fix. He was behind in his payments, and he thought this house raid would help erase that debt. They agreed to that arrangement. He had told them that they were going to be away, but thought they would have checked it out first to make sure the house was empty before they broke in. So Josh ended up being charged as an accomplice. He had been at the house several times during that week, it was also learned.

It was also learned that the four intruders laughed during their interrogation about how gullible the Franklin family was, falling for the sob story of being these poor homeless people.

Mabel went to bed this night of September 5nd thinking how lucky the family was that it all worked out. She began to imagine what could have happened leading to a much more terrible result. Then she couldn't stop smiling as she imagined Hazel standing there with that fry pan, waving it over her head. That would give anyone pause to tangle with her.

Don't mess with those seniors, she stated, as she settled in to bed. And finally as she drifted off to sleep, her last thought was a question – “I wonder if Barbara will really be at school tomorrow? She'll be a celebrity for sure, at the very least.

Will she want that attention?

Hmm, I better follow up on that in the morning.”

Fortunately Barbara was too angry to be traumatized. She was just too pissed off after learning that Josh was the ringleader of this home invasion.

At least that is how it stands this Tuesday night. However in the morning, it is hard to say what frame of mind she will be in. Will she be able to face going to school? Or is she strong enough to shrug off this ordeal, and move on? We will know soon enough...

Wawa Is Home To Ontario’s First Female Hard Rock Miners!

“It’s bad luck for women to go underground!” This was an unspoken rule in the male dominated world of hard rock miners. Female labourers at the Algoma Ore Division disagreed and as a result initiated a human rights challenge. It was not until Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act came into law in 1979 and the sexually discriminatory language of Ontario’s Mining Act was removed, that women could finally work side by side with their male counterparts in the miles of underground workings at Algoma Ore’s MacLeod Mine.

In January of 1980, Florence Orr, Mildred Christiansen and Irene Mitchell made history by becoming the first female hard rock miners to work underground in Ontario. They loved it. The work was challenging, and their male coworkers were

incredibly supportive. None of them were treated any differently.

Within a week of the women starting their new positions in the mine, the workforce experienced a mining fatality. Florence recalls that the death of their coworker ”really shook everyone up, but it didn’t chase us back to the surface.”

Florence continued underground for 10 years. Mildred was the mine’s number one blaster for over 20 years.

Mildred and Irene worked underground until the mine was shut down in 1998 and both transferred to the parent company Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Although their work underground was short lived, their legacy continues and Wawa will always be able to say that we were home to Ontario’s first female hard rock miners.
